Abstract

Animal welfare is an essential part of the sustainability of animal production. While low-input farming, such as organic animal production, is often considered animal-friendly, several ways to enhance animal welfare in low-input animal production exist. However, currently there is little information on how farmers and other supply chain actors view different innovations and tools which may influence animal welfare in low-input outdoor and organic production systems. The aim of this study was to examine farmers’ and experts’ reactions to new approaches to pig and poultry production, with special attention to their animal welfare-related measures. The reactions were tested formally in by using a quantitative survey instrument in nine European countries (Finland, UK, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Romania). In the survey, respondents’ views on production practices and novel measures were asked. These included aspects such as applicability and advantages and disadvantages of various measures such as avoiding mutilations, using dual-purpose or local breeds, or in-ovo sexing. The data included altogether 218 responses from nine countries. Differences between countries were tested and groups of respondents were identified. The results suggest that supply side stakeholders foresee the welfare benefits and some disadvantages of welfare improving measures proposed to them. However, they also indicate that several measures were considered inapplicable despite their benefits. Inadequate financial provisions to adopt a measure was considered as one of the most important reasons for inapplicability of a measure. This may imply either high costs of implementing measures of low market incentives or perceived low demand for animal-friendly products. Other barriers for adopting welfare-friendly measures included farm-specific factors such as limitations imposed by housing. The respondents indicated a high relative preference for feeding, breeding, shelter from predators and the use of vaccines and anti-parasitic treatments to the provision of enrichments and nesting material to pigs, and to mutilations. Farmers agreed that environmental enrichments are important welfare-improving levers and preferred their use in low-input pig and poultry production. Animal breeding-related measures in pig production were perceived quite favorably by supply side stakeholders. Despite their welfare benefits, farmers in some countries had quite high preference towards maintaining castration and tail docking in pig and beak trimming in broiler production as part of their production method.

Description of the subject. This short note documents the use of hydrolyzable tannins as silage additives to reduce proteolysis thanks to a laboratory-scale ensiling method.Objectives. Abstract

Session 45 - Théâtre 14; Diet digestibility and intake are animal traits difficult to measure in practice. Thus, several indirect methods including faecal visible/near infrared (VIS/NIR) spectroscopy, have been developed for predicting these traits. The development of this technology requires great number of samples, which are not always obtained in standardized conditions among experiments. Consequently, the lack of standardization could be associated to a loss of precision of VIS/NIR models. In order to test this hypothesis, we used 88 VIS/NIR spectra of faeces sampled on cattle beef and dairy cows from 3 different experiments (De la Torre et al., 2019; Herremans et al., 2019; Fanchone et al., 2013). Experiments included measurements of the individual organic matter digestibility (OMD) and daily dry matter intake (DI) of animals. Two calibration strategies were compared for predicting these measurements: (1) specific experiment calibration and (2) a global calibration procedure. Models were assessed by standard error of cross-validation (SECV) and coefficient of determination of cross-validation (R2CV). The SECV was separated into bias and SECV corrected by bias SECV(C). Bias and SECV(C) for both calibration strategies were compared using the procedure of Fearn (1996). Data sets gave value ranges of 0.60-0.78 for OMD and 53-181 g/kg body weight (BW)0.75 for DI. For OMD, the SECV and R2CV were 0.02 and 0.86 for both specific experiment calibration and global calibration procedure. For DI, the SECV and R2CV were 6.90 g/kg BW0.75 and 0.96 respectively, for the specific experiment calibration and 7.62 g/kg BW0.75 and 0.95, respectively, for the global calibration procedure. For both, OMD and DI, no significant differences between calibration strategies were found for bias and SECV(C). From the results of this preliminary study, we conclude that mixing data from experiments conducted in very different conditions does not degrade the precision of the obtained VIS/NIRS models to predict OMD and DI in cattle.

12. Silage additives to reduce protein degradation during ensiling and evaluation of in vitro ruminal nitrogen degradability.

Abstract

Despite the high degradability of their proteins, grass and legume silages represent an important option to reach more sustainable livestock systems. To improve the nitrogen use efficiency of these crops, this study assessed the potential of several additives (chestnut tannins, oak tannins, zeolite, erythritol by‐product solution and wood molasses) to reduce proteolysis in the silo and in vitro nitrogen degradability. Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and red clover (Trifolium pratense) were ensiled in varying proportions in laboratory‐scale silos made of vacuum‐packed plastic bags. Dry‐matter content, chemical composition, pH, ammonia and volatile fatty acids content were analysed after 34 days of ensiling. Ruminal nitrogen degradability was assessed in vitro (Aufrère & Cartailler,). We observed that the proportion of ammonia in silage was reduced by the addition of oak tannin (−12%) and zeolite (−16%). The addition of zeolite lowered in vitro organic matter digestibility. Rapidly degradable nitrogen (1‐hr degradability) was reduced in vitro by both tannins (−6.8% for chestnut and −6.6% for oak) and zeolite (−5.8%), but total degradable nitrogen (24‐hr degradability) was only reduced by oak (−6.5%) and chestnut tannins (−7.3%). It suggests that tannins protected proteins from plant and bacterial enzymes by forming a complex that better resists silage fermentations and in vitro protease action. The reduction effects on proteolysis in the silo and on in vitro ruminal nitrogen degradability are limited individually but could be cumulative. Erythritol by‐product solution and wood molasses had no effect on silo or in vitro proteolysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
