Room temperature cavity quantum electrodynamics with molecular materials in optical cavities offers exciting prospects for controlling electronic, nuclear and photonic degrees of freedom for applications in physics, chemistry and materials science. However, achieving strong coupling with molecular ensembles typically requires high molecular densities and substantial electromagnetic field confinement. These conditions usually involve a significant degree of molecular disorder and a highly structured photonic density of states. It remains unclear to what extent these additional complexities modify the usual physical picture of strong coupling developed for atoms and inorganic semiconductors. Using a microscopic quantum description of molecular ensembles in realistic multimode optical resonators, we show that the emergence of a vacuum Rabi splitting in linear spectroscopy is a necessary but not sufficient metric of coherent admixing between light and matter. In low finesse multi-mode situations we find that molecular dipoles can be partially hybridised with photonic dissipation channels associated with off-resonant cavity modes. Optical nonlinearities are fundamental in several types of optical information processing protocols. However, the high laser intensities needed for implementing phase nonlinearities using conventional optical materials represent a challenge for nonlinear optics in the few-photon regime. We introduce an infrared cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) approach for imprinting nonlinear phase shifts on individual THz pulses in reflection setups, conditional on the input power. Power-dependent phase shifts on the order of $ 0.1\, \pi$ can be achieved with femtosecond pulses of only a few $\mu$W input power. The proposed scheme involves a small number of intersubband quantum well transition dipoles evanescently coupled to the near field of an infrared resonator. The field evolution is nonlinear due to the dynamical transfer of spectral anharmonicity from material dipoles to the infrared vacuum, through an effective dipolar chirping mechanism that transiently detunes the quantum well transitions from the vacuum field, leading to photon blockade. We develop analytical theory that describes the dependence of the imprinted nonlinear phase shift on relevant physical parameters. For a pair of quantum well dipoles, the phase control scheme is shown to be robust with respect to inhomogeneities in the dipole transition frequencies and relaxation rates. Numerical results based on the Lindblad quantum master equation validate the theory in the regime where the material dipoles are populated up to the second excitation manifold. In contrast with conventional QED schemes for phase control that require strong light-matter interaction, the proposed phase nonlinearity works best in weak coupling, increasing the prospects for its experimental realization using current nanophotonic technology., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

The transmission of strong laser light in nonlinear optical materials can generate output photons sources that carry quantum entanglement in multiple degrees of freedom, making this process a fundamentally important tool in optical quantum technology. However, the availability of efficient optical crystals for entangled light generation is severely limited in terms of diversity, thus reducing the prospects for the implementation of next-generation protocols in quantum sensing, communication and computing. To overcome this, we developed and implemented a multi-scale first-principles modeling technique for the computational discovery of novel nonlinear optical devices based on metal-organic framework (MOF) materials that can efficiently generate entangled light via spontaneous parametric down-conversion(SPDC). Using collinear degenerate type-I SPDC as a case study, we computationally screen a database of 114,373 synthesized MOF materials to establish correlations between the structure and chemical composition of MOFs with the brightness and coherence properties of entangled photon pairs. We identify a subset of 49 non-centrosymmetric mono-ligand MOF crystals with high chemical and optical stability that produce entangled photon pairs with intrinsic $G^{(2)}$ correlation times $\tau_c\sim 10-30$ fs and pair generation rates in the range $10^4-10^{8}$ s$^{-1}$mW$^{-1}$mm$^{-1}$ at 1064 nm. Conditions for optimal type-I phase matching are given for each MOF and relationships between pair brightness, crystal band gap and optical birefringence are discussed. Correlations between the optical properties of crystals and their constituent molecular ligands are also given. Stationary coherence in small conducting arrays has been shown to influence the transport efficiency of electronic nanodevices. Model schemes that capture the interplay between electron delocalization and system-reservoir interactions on the device performance are therefore important for designing next-generation nanojunctions powered by quantum coherence. We use a Lindblad open quantum system approach to obtain the current-voltage characteristics of small-size networks of interacting conducting sites subject to radiative and non-radiative interactions with the environment, for experimentally-relevant case studies. Lindblad theory is shown to reproduce recent measurements of negative conductance in single-molecule junctions using a biased two-site model driven by thermal fluctuations. For array sites with conducting ground and excited orbitals in the presence of radiative incoherent pumping, we show that Coulomb interactions that otherwise suppress charge transport can be overcome to produce light-induced currents. We also show that in nanojunctions having asymmetric transfer rates between the array and electrical contacts, an incoherent driving field can induce photocurrents at zero bias voltage whose direction depend on the type or orbital delocalization established between sites. Understanding the physical processes that determine the relaxation $T_{1}$ and dephasing $T_2$ times of molecular spin qubits is critical for envisioned applications in quantum metrology and information processing. Recent spin-echo $T_1$ measurements of solid-state molecular spin qubits have stimulated the development of quantum mechanical models for predicting intrinsic spin qubit timescales using first-principles electronic structure methods. We develop an alternative semi-empirical approach to construct Redfield quantum master equations for molecular spin qubits using a stochastic Haken-Strobl model for a central spin with a fluctuating gyromagnetic tensor due to spin-lattice interaction and a fluctuating local magnetic field due to interactions with other lattice spins. Using a vanadium-based spin qubit as a case study, we compute qubit population and decoherence timescales as a function of temperature and magnetic field using a bath spectral density parametrized with a small number of $T_{1}$ measurements. The theory quantitatively agrees with experimental data over a range of conditions beyond those used to parametrize the model, demonstrating the generalization potential of the method. The ability of the model to describe the temperature dependence of the ratio $T_2/T_1$ is discussed and possible applications for designing novel molecule-based quantum magnetometers are suggested., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Molecular strong coupling offers exciting prospects in physics, chemistry and materials science. Whilst attention has been focused on developing realistic models for the molecular systems, the important role played by the entire photonic mode structure of the optical cavities has been less explored. We show that the effectiveness of molecular strong coupling may be critically dependent on cavity finesse. Specifically we only see emission associated with a dispersive lower polariton for cavities with sufficient finesse. By developing an analytical model of cavity photoluminescence in a multimode structure we clarify the role of finite-finesse in polariton formation, and show that lowering the finesse reduces the extent of the mixing of light and matter in polariton states. We suggest that the detailed nature of the photonic modes supported by a cavity will be as important in developing a coherent framework for molecular strong coupling as the inclusion of realistic molecular models.

Porous materials are widely used for applications in gas storage and separation. The diffusive properties of a variety of gases in porous media can be modeled using molecular dynamics simulations that can be computationally demanding depending on the pore geometry, complexity and amount of gas adsorbed. We explore a dimensionality reduction approach for estimating the self-diffusion coefficient of gases in simple pores using Langevin dynamics, such that the three-dimensional (3D) atomistic interactions that determine the diffusion properties of realistic systems can be reduced to an effective one-dimensional (1D) diffusion problem along the pore axis. We demonstrate the approach by modeling the transport of nitrogen molecules in single-walled carbon nanotubes of different radii, showing that 1D Langevin models can be parametrized with a few single-particle 3D atomistic simulations. The reduced 1D model predicts accurate diffusion coefficients over a broad range of temperatures and gas densities. Modeling the non-equilibrium dissipative dynamics of strongly interacting quantized degrees of freedom is a fundamental problem in several branches of physics and chemistry. We implement a quantum state trajectory scheme for solving Lindblad quantum master equations that describe coherent and dissipative processes for a set of strongly-coupled quantized oscillators. The scheme involves a sequence of stochastic quantum jumps with transition probabilities determined the system state and the system-reservoir dynamics. Between consecutive jumps, the wavefunction is propagated in coordinate space using the multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. We compare this hybrid propagation methodology with exact Liouville space solutions for physical systems of interest in cavity quantum electrodynamics, demonstrating accurate results for experimentally relevant observables using a tractable number of quantum trajectories. We show the potential for solving the dissipative dynamics of finite size arrays of strongly interacting quantized oscillators with high excitation densities, a scenario that is challenging for conventional density matrix propagators due to the large dimensionality of the underlying Hilbert space., Comment: Simplified Fig. 6. Identifying chemical compounds is essential in several areas of science and engineering. Laser-based techniques are promising for autonomous compound detection because the optical response of materials encodes enough electronic and vibrational information for remote chemical identification. This has been exploited using the fingerprint region of infrared absorption spectra, which involves a dense set of absorption peaks that are unique to individual molecules, thus facilitating chemical identification. However, optical identification using visible light has not been realized. Using decades of experimental refractive index data in the scientific literature of pure organic compounds and polymers over a broad range of frequencies from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared, we develop a machine learning classifier that can accurately identify organic species based on a single-wavelength dispersive measurement in the visible spectral region, away from absorption resonances. Controlling the quantum field statistics of confined light is a long-standing goal in integrated photonics. We show that by coupling molecular vibrations with a confined mid-infrared cavity vacuum, the photocount and quadrature field statistics of the cavity field can be reversibly manipulated over sub-picosecond timescales. The mechanism involves changing the cavity resonance frequency through a modulation of the dielectric response of the cavity materials using femtosecond UV pulses. For a single anharmonic molecular vibration in an infrared cavity under ultrastrong coupling conditions, the pulsed modulation of the cavity frequency can adiabatically produce mid-infrared light that is simultaneously sub-Poissonian and quadrature squeezed, depending on the dipolar behavior of the vibrational mode. For a vibration-cavity system in strong coupling, non-adiabatic polariton excitations can be produced after the frequency modulation pulse is over, when the system is initially prepared in the lower polariton state. We propose design principles for the generation of mid-infrared quantum light by analyzing the dependence of the cavity field statistics on the shape of the electric dipole function of the molecule, the cavity detuning at the modulation peak and the anharmonicity of the Morse potential. Feasible experimental implementations of the modulation scheme are suggested. Nanoscale infrared (IR) resonators with sub-diffraction limited mode volumes and open geometries have emerged as new platforms for implementing cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) at room temperature. The use of infrared (IR) nano-antennas and tip nanoprobes to study strong light-matter coupling of molecular vibrations with the vacuum field can be exploited for IR quantum control with nanometer and femtosecond resolution. In order to accelerate the development of molecule-based quantum nano-photonic devices in the mid-IR, we develop a generally applicable semi-empirical quantum optics approach to describe light-matter interaction in systems driven by mid-IR femtosecond laser pulses. The theory is shown to reproduce recent experiments on the acceleration of the vibrational relaxation rate in infrared nanostructures, and also provide physical insights for the implementation of coherent phase rotations of the near-field using broadband nanotips. We then apply the quantum framework to develop general tip-design rules for the experimental manipulation of vibrational strong coupling and Fano interference effects in open infrared resonators. We finally propose the possibility of transferring the natural anharmonicity of molecular vibrational levels to the resonator near-field in the weak coupling regime, to implement intensity-dependent phase shifts of the coupled system response with strong pulses. Our semi-empirical quantum theory is equivalent to first-principles techniques based on Maxwell's equations, but its lower computational cost suggests its use a rapid design tool for the development of strongly-coupled infrared nanophotonic hardware for applications ranging from quantum control of materials to quantum information processing., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We study ultracold long-range collisions of heteronuclear alkali-metal dimers with a reservoir gas of alkali-metal Rydberg atoms in a two-photon laser excitation scheme. In a low density regime where molecules remain outside the Rydberg orbits of the reservoir atoms, we show that the two-photon photoassociation (PA) of the atom-molecule pair into a long-range bound trimer state is efficient over a broad range of atomic Rydberg channels. As a case study, we obtain the PA lineshapes for the formation of trimers composed of KRb molecules in the rovibrational ground state and excited Rb atoms in the asymptotic Rydberg levels $n^{2}S_j$ and $n^{2}D_j$, for $n=20-80$. We predict atom-molecule binding energies in the range $10-10^3$ kHz for the first vibrational state below threshold. The average trimer formation rate is order $10^8\, {\rm s}^{-1}$ at 1.0 $\mu$K, and depends weakly on the principal quantum number $n$. Our results set the foundations for a broader understanding of exotic long range collisions of dilute molecules in ultracold atomic Rydberg reservoirs., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We propose to use molecular picocavity ensembles as macroscopic coherent nonlinear optical devices enabled by nanoscale strong coupling. For a generic picocavity model that includes molecular and photonic disorder, we derive theoretical performance bounds for coherent cross-phase modulation signals using weak classical fields of different frequencies. We show that strong coupling of the picocavity {\it vacua} with a specific vibronic sideband in the molecular emission spectrum results in a significant variation of the effective refractive index of the metamaterial relative to a molecule-free scenario, due to a vacuum-induced Autler-Townes effect. For a realistic molecular disorder model, we demonstrate that cross-phase modulation of optical fields as weak as 10 kW/cm$^2$ is feasible using dilute ensembles of molecular picocavities at room temperature, provided that the confined vacuum is not resonantly driven by the external probe field}. We develop a fully quantum mechanical methodology to describe the static properties and the dynamics of a single anharmonic vibrational mode interacting with a quantized infrared cavity field in the strong and ultrastrong coupling regimes. By comparing multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) simulations for a Morse oscillator in a cavity, with an equivalent formulation of the problem in Hilbert space, we describe for the first time the essential role of permanent dipole moments in the femtosecond dynamics of vibrational polariton wavepackets. We show that depending on the shape of the electric dipole function $d_e(q)$ along the vibrational mode coordinate $q$, molecules can be classified into three general families. For molecules that are polar and have a positive slope of the dipole function at equilibrium, we show that an initial diabatic light-matter product state without vibrational or cavity excitations can evolve into a polariton wavepacket with a large number of intracavity photons, for interaction strengths at the onset of ultrastrong coupling. This build up of intracavity photon amplitude is accompanied by an effective $lengthening$ of the vibrational mode of nearly $10\%$, comparable with a laser-induced vibrational excitation in free space. In contrast, molecules that are also polar at equilibrium but have a negative slope of the dipole function, experience an effective mode $shortening$ under equivalent coupling conditions. Our model predictions are numerically validated using realistic $ab$-$initio$ potentials and dipole functions for HF and CO$_2$ molecules in their ground electronic states. We finally propose a non-adiabatic state preparation scheme to generate vibrational polaritons using nanoscale infrared antennas and UV-vis photochemistry or electron tunneling, to enable the far-field detection of spontaneously generated infrared quantum light., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 57 refs

We study the van der Waals interaction between Rydberg alkali-metal atoms with fine structure ($n^2L_j$; $L\leq 2$) and heteronuclear alkali-metal dimers in the ground rovibrational state ($X^1\Sigma^+$; $v=0$, $J=0$). We compute the associated $C_6$ dispersion coefficients of atom-molecule pairs involving $^{133}$Cs and $^{85}$Rb atoms interacting with KRb, LiCs, LiRb, and RbCs molecules. The obtained dispersion coefficients can be accurately fitted to a state-dependent polynomial $O(n^7)$ over the range of principal quantum numbers $40\leq n\leq 150$. For all atom-molecule pairs considered, Rydberg states $n^2S_j$ and $n^2P_j$ result in attractive $1/R^6$ potentials. In contrast, $n^2D_j$ states can give rise to repulsive potentials for specific atom-molecule pairs. The interaction energy at the LeRoy distance approximately scales as $n^{-5}$ for $n>40$. For intermediate values of $n\lesssim40$, both repulsive and attractive interaction energies in the order of $ 10-100 \,\mu$K can be achieved with specific atomic and molecular species. This is a tutorial-style introduction to the field of molecular polaritons. We describe the basic physical principles and consequences of strong light-matter coupling common to molecular ensembles embedded in UV-visible or infrared cavities. Using a microscopic quantum electrodynamics formulation, we discuss the competition between the collective cooperative dipolar response of a molecular ensemble and local dynamical processes that molecules typically undergo, including chemical reactions. We highlight some of the observable consequences of this competition between local and collective effects in linear transmission spectroscopy, including the formal equivalence between quantum mechanical theory and the classical transfer matrix method, under specific conditions of molecular density and indistinguishability. We also overview recent experimental and theoretical developments on strong and ultrastrong coupling with electronic and vibrational transitions, with a special focus on cavity-modified chemistry and infrared spectroscopy under vibrational strong coupling. We finally suggest several opportunities for further studies that may lead to novel applications in chemical and electromagnetic sensing, energy conversion, optoelectronics, quantum control and quantum technology., Comment: 4 figures, 222 Refs

We propose a cavity QED approach to describe light-matter interaction between an individual anharmonic molecular vibration and an infrared cavity field. Starting from a generic Morse oscillator with quantized nuclear motion, we derive a multi-level quantum Rabi model to study vibrational polaritons beyond the rotating-wave approximation. We analyze the spectrum of vibrational polaritons in detail and compare with available experiments. For high excitation energies, the spectrum exhibits a dense manifold of true and avoided level crossings as the light-matter coupling strength and cavity frequency are tuned. These crossings are governed by a pseudo parity selection rule imposed by the cavity field. We also analyze polariton eigenstates in nuclear coordinate space. We show that the bond length of a vibrational polariton at a given energy is never greater than the bond length of a bare Morse oscillator with the same energy. This type of bond hardening of vibrational polaritons occurs at the expense of the creation of virtual infrared cavity photons, and may have implications in chemical reactivity., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures + SM

It has become increasingly common for high-school students to see media reports on the importance of quantum mechanics in the development of next-generation industries such as drug development and secure communication, but few of them have been exposed to fundamental quantum mechanical concepts in a meaningful classroom activity. In order to bridge this gap, we design and test a low-cost 20-minute demonstration of the Bell test, which is used in several entanglement-based quantum key distribution protocols. The demonstration introduces ideas such as the quantum state, quantum measurement, spin quantization, cryptography, and entanglement; all without using concepts beyond the 9th grade of the Chilean high-school curriculum. The demonstration can serve to promote early exposure of the future adopters and developers of quantum technology with its conceptual building blocks, and also to educate the general public about the importance of quantum mechanics in modern industry, Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. We propose a cavity QED scheme to enable cross-phase modulation between two arbitrarily weak classical fields in the optical domain, using organic molecular photoswitches as a disordered intracavity nonlinear medium. We show that a long-lived vibrational Raman coherence between the $cis$ and $trans$ isomer states of the photoswitch can be exploited to establish the phenomenon of vacuum-induced transparency (VIT) in high-quality microcavities. We exploit this result to derive an expression for the cross-phase modulation signal and demonstrate that it is possible to surpass the detection limit imposed by absorption losses, even in the presence of strong natural energetic and orientational disorder in the medium. In this paper we obtain exact asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole solutions and asymptotically Lifshitz black hole solutions with dynamical exponents $z=0$ and $z=4$ of four-dimensional conformal gravity coupled with a self-interacting conformally invariant scalar field. Then, we compute their thermodynamical quantities, such as the mass, the Wald entropy and the Hawking temperature. The mass expression is obtained by using the generalized off-shell Noether potential formulation. It is found that the anti-de Sitter black holes as well as the Lifshitz black holes with $z=0$ have zero mass and zero entropy, although they have non-zero temperature. A similar behavior has been observed in previous works, where the integration constant is not associated with a conserved charge, and it can be interpreted as a kind of gravitational hair. On the other hand, the Lifshitz black holes with dynamical exponent $z=4$ have non-zero conserved charges, and the first law of black hole thermodynamics holds. Also, we analyze the horizon thermodynamics for the Lifshitz black holes with $z=4$, and we show that the first law of black hole thermodynamics arises from the field equations evaluated on the horizon. Furthermore, we study the propagation of a conformally coupled scalar field on these backgrounds and we find the quasinormal modes analytically in several cases. We find that for anti-de Sitter black holes and Lifshitz black holes with $z=4$, there is a continuous spectrum of frequencies for Dirichlet boundary condition; however, we show that discrete sets of well defined quasinormal frequencies can be obtained by considering Neumann boundary conditions.

The interaction of organic molecules and molecular aggregates with electromagnetic fields that are strongly confined inside optical cavities within nanoscale volumes, has allowed the observation of exotic quantum regimes of light-matter interaction at room temperature, for a wide variety of cavity materials and geometries. Understanding the universal features of such organic cavities represents a significant challenge for theoretical modelling, as experiments show that these systems are characterized by an intricate competition between coherent and dissipative processes involving entangled nuclear, electronic and photonic degrees of freedom. In this review, we discuss a new theoretical framework that can successfully describe organic cavities under strong light-matter coupling. The theory combines standard concepts in chemical physics and quantum optics to provide a microscopic description of vibronic organic polaritons that is fully consistent with available experiments, and yet is profoundly different from the common view of organic polaritons. We show that by introducing a new class of vibronic polariton wave functions with a photonic component that is dressed by intramolecular vibrations, the new theory can offer a consistent solution to some of the long-standing puzzles in the interpretation of organic cavity photoluminescence. Throughout this review, we confront the predictions of the model with spectroscopic observations, and describe the conditions under which the theory reduces to previous approaches. Organic microcavities can be engineered to reach exotic quantum regimes of strong and ultrastrong light-matter coupling. However, the microscopic interpretation of their spectroscopic signals can be challenging due to the competition between coherent and dissipative processes involving electrons, vibrations and cavity photons. We develop here a theoretical framework based on the Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model and a Markovian treatment of dissipation to account for previously unexplained spectroscopic features of organic microcavities consistently. We identify conditions for the formation of dark vibronic polaritons, a new class of light-matter excitations that are not visible in absorption but lead to strong photoluminescence lines. We show that photon leakage from dark vibronic polaritons can be responsible for enhancing photoluminescence at the lower polariton frequency, and also explain the apparent breakdown of reciprocity between absorption and emission in the vicinity of the bare molecular transition frequency. Organic microcavities are photonic nanostructures that strongly confine the electromagnetic field, allowing exotic quantum regimes of light-matter interaction with disordered organic semiconductors. The unambiguous interpretation of the spectra of organic microcavities has been a long-standing challenge due to several competing effects involving electrons, vibrations and cavity photons. Here we present a theoretical framework that is able to describe the main spectroscopic features of organic microcavities consistently. We introduce a class of light-matter excitations called dark vibronic polaritons, which strongly emit but only weakly absorb light in the same frequency region of the bare electronic transition. Successful comparison with experimental data demonstrates the applicability of our theory. We show that strong resonant coupling of a cavity field with an electronic transition can effectively decouple collective electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in a disordered molecular ensemble, even for molecules with high-frequency quantum vibrational modes having strong electron-vibration interactions. This type of polaron decoupling can be used to control chemical reactions. We show that an ensemble of organic dye molecules with permanent electric dipole moments embedded in a microcavity can lead to strong optical nonlinearities at the single photon level. The strong long-range electrostatic interaction between chromophores due to their permanent dipoles introduces the desired nonlinearity of the light-matter coupling in the microcavity. We obtain the absorption spectra of a weak probe field under the influence of strong exciton-photon coupling with the cavity field. Using realistic parameters, we demonstrate that a single cavity photon can significantly modify the absorptive and dispersive response of the medium to a probe photon at a different frequency. Finally, we show that the system is in the regime of cavity-induced transparency with a broad transparency window for dye dimers. Implementing a scalable quantum information processor using polar molecules in optical lattices requires precise control over the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between molecules in selected lattice sites. We present here a scheme using trapped open-shell $^2\Sigma$ polar molecules that allows dipolar exchange processes between nearest and next-nearest neighbors to be controlled to construct a generalized transverse Ising spin Hamiltonian with tunable $XX$, $YY$ and $XY$ couplings in the rotating frame of the driving lasers. The scheme requires a moderately strong bias magnetic field with near-infrared light to provide local tuning of the qubit energy gap, and mid-infrared pulses to perform rotational state transfer via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. No interaction between qubits is present in the absence of the infrared driving. We analyze the fidelity of the resulting two-qubit matchgate, and demonstrate its robustness as a function of the driving parameters. While many-particle entanglement can be found in natural solids and strongly interacting atomic and molecular gases, generating highly entangled states between weakly interacting particles in a controlled and scalable way presents a significant challenge. We describe here a one-step method to generate entanglement in a dilute gas of cold polar molecules. For molecules in optical traps separated by a few micrometers, we show that maximally entangled states can be created using the strong off-resonant pulses that are routinely used in molecular alignment experiments. We show that the resulting alignment-mediated entanglement can be detected by measuring laser-induced fluorescence with single-site resolution and that signatures of this molecular entanglement also appear in the microwave absorption spectra of the molecular ensemble. We analyze the robustness of these entangled molecular states with respect to intensity fluctuations of the trapping laser and discuss possible applications of the system for quantum information processing., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

We determine the phase diagram of a polaron model with mixed breathing-mode and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger couplings and show that it has two sharp transitions, in contrast to pure models which exhibit one (for Su-Schrieffer-Heeger coupling) or no (for breathing-mode coupling) transition. Our results indicate that the physics of realistic mixed polaron models is much richer than that of simplified models. We then show that ultracold molecules trapped in optical lattices can be used to study precisely this mixed Hamiltonian, and that the relative contributions of the two couplings can be tuned with external electric fields. The parameters of current experimental set-ups place them in the region where one of the transitions occurs. We show that an ensemble of polar molecules trapped in an optical lattice can be considered as a controllable open quantum system. The coupling between collective rotational excitations and the motion of the molecules in the lattice potential can be controlled by varying the strength and orientation of an external DC electric field as well as the intensity of the trapping laser. The system can be described by a generalized Holstein Hamiltonian with tunable parameters and can be used as a quantum simulator of excitation energy transfer and polaron phenomena. We show that an ensemble of $^2\Sigma$ molecules in the rotationally ground state trapped on an optical lattice exhibits collective spin excitations that can be controlled by applying superimposed electric and magnetic fields. In particular, we show that the lowest energy excitation of the molecular ensemble at certain combinations of electric and magnetic fields leads to the formation of a magnetic Frenkel exciton. The exciton bandwidth can be tuned by varying the electric or magnetic fields. We show that the exciton states can be localized by creating vacancies in the optical lattice. The localization patterns of the magnetic exciton states are sensitive to the number and distribution of vacancies, which can be exploited for engineering many-body entangled spin states. We consider the dynamics of magnetic exciton wavepackets and show that the spin excitation transfer between molecules in an optical lattice can be accelerated or slowed down by tuning an external magnetic or electric field.

In the present work, we demonstrate the possibility of controlling by an external field the dynamics of collective excitations (excitons) of molecules on an optical lattice. We show that a suitably chosen two-species mixture of ultracold polar molecules loaded on an optical lattice forms a phononless crystal, where exciton-impurity interactions can be controlled by applying an external electric field. This can be used for the controlled creation of many-body entangled states of ultracold molecules and the time-domain quantum simulation of disorder-induced localization and delocalization of quantum particles.
