Abstract

We present the design of the mechanical structure of the miniBeBe detector, a subsystem of the Multi-Purpose Detector, soon to enter into operation at the Nuclotron based Ion Collider fAcility of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The miniBeBe detector was designed and is currently being developed by the MexNICA Collaboration to contribute to the level-zero trigger of the Time of Flight. The mechanical structure meets the requirements of minimizing the material budget and be free of ferromagnetic materials, without compromising its robustness. The design also allows easy module replacement for maintenance and overall removal at the end of the first stage of the experiment, without affecting the rest of the subsystems, to leave room for the installation of the Inner Tracking System. In addition, a Finite Element Method analysis of the mechanical components under load was performed. Based on this analysis, it was determined that the design meets the space constraints within the Multi-Purpose Detector, as well as a deformation of less than 1 mm with overall stress of less than 2 MPa, such that no material used in the design is at risk of mechanical failure during operation. A cooling system heat transfer analysis was performed showing that the detector Silicon Photo-Multipliers can be kept within a temperature range of 19$^{\circ}$C to 23$^{\circ}$C, which is adequate for their optimal performance., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

The hallmark of topological crystalline insulators is the emergence of a robust electronic state in a bandgap localized at the boundary of the material. However, end, edge, and surface states can also have a non-topological origin. Unfortunately, topological invariants such as the winding number and Zak-phase are often not directly experimentally accessible for solids. In addition to topological invariants, the position of the Wannier centers provide a fingerprint for the topological character of a material. Here, we demonstrate a method to experimentally determine the location of Wannier centers in artificial lattices made of Cs/InAs(111)A by integrating the density of states. We determine the locations of the Wannier centers for various 1D chains, topological and trivial, and corroborate our findings with tight-binding simulations.

Abstract

The galaxy SDSS1335+0728, which had exhibited no prior optical variations during the preceding two decades, began showing significant nuclear variability in the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) alert stream from December 2019 (as ZTF19acnskyy). Its behaviour suggests that SDSS1335+0728 hosts a $\sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$ black hole (BH) that is currently in the process of `turning on'. We present a multi-wavelength photometric analysis and spectroscopic follow-up performed with the aim of better understanding the origin of the nuclear variations detected in SDSS1335+0728. We used archival photometry and spectroscopic data to study the state of SDSS1335+0728 prior to December 2019, and new observations from Swift, SOAR/Goodman, VLT/X-shooter, and Keck/LRIS taken after its turn-on to characterise its current state. We find that: (a) since 2021, the UV flux is four times brighter than the flux reported by GALEX in 2004; (b) since June 2022, the mid-infrared flux has risen more than two times, and the W1-W2 WISE colour has become redder; (c) since February 2024, the source has begun showing X-ray emission; (d) the narrow emission line ratios are now consistent with a more energetic ionising continuum; (e) broad emission lines are not detected; and (f) the [OIII] line increased its flux $\sim 3.6$ years after the first ZTF alert, which implies a relatively compact narrow-line-emitting region. We conclude that the variations observed in SDSS1335+0728 could be either explained by an AGN that is just turning on or by an exotic tidal disruption event (TDE). If the former is true, SDSS1335+0728 is one of the strongest cases of an AGN observed in the process of activating. If the latter, it would correspond to the longest and faintest TDE ever observed (or another class of still unknown nuclear transient). Abstract

The spectral properties of a non-Hermitian quasi-1D lattice in two of the possible dimerization configurations are investigated. Specifically, it focuses on a non-Hermitian diamond chain that presents a zero-energy flat band. The flat band originates from wave interference and results in eigenstates with a finite contribution only on two sites of the unit cell. To achieve the non-Hermitian characteristics, the system under study presents non-reciprocal hopping terms in the chain. This leads to the accumulation of eigenstates on the boundary of the system, known as the non-Hermitian skin effect. Despite this accumulation of eigenstates, for one of the two considered configurations, it is possible to characterize the presence of non-trivial edge states at zero energy by a real-space topological invariant known as the biorthogonal polarization. This work shows that this invariant, evaluated using the destructive interference method, characterizes the non-trivial phase of the non-Hermitian diamond chain. For the second non-Hermitian configuration, there is a finite quantum metric associated with the flat band. Additionally, the system presents the skin effect despite the system having a purely real or imaginary spectrum. The two non-Hermitian diamond chains can be mapped into two models of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains, either non-Hermitian, and Hermitian, both in the presence of a flat band. She attended our emergency clinic for an urgent care due to post COVID-19 vertigo and anxiety. Her problem began with severe, short-lived attacks of objective-circular type vertigo, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The symptoms occurred when she assumed a lying position, turn right and sat or stood upright.Interventions: The patient received medical prescription for hypothyroidism, vertigo and anxiety symptoms. Oral route feeding was started and was well tolerated.Outcomes: The patient showed good evolution with the treatment. 11. Tunable Dirac points in a two-dimensional non-symmorphic wallpaper group lattice

Abstract

Non-symmorphic symmetries protect Dirac nodal lines and cones in lattice systems. Here, we investigate the spectral properties of a two-dimensional lattice belonging to a non-symmorphic group. Specifically, we look at the herringbone lattice, characterised by two sets of glide symmetries applied in two orthogonal directions. We describe the system using a nearest-neighbour tight-binding model containing horizontal and vertical hopping terms. We find two non-equivalent Dirac cones inside the first Brillouin zone along a high-symmetry path. We tune these Dirac cones' positions by breaking the lattice symmetries using onsite potentials. These Dirac cones can merge into a semi-Dirac cone or unfold along a high-symmetry path. Finally, we perturb the system by applying a dimerization of the hopping terms. We report a flow of Dirac cones inside the first Brillouin zone describing quasi-hyperbolic curves. Abstract

Topological Quantum Chemistry (TQC) has recently emerged as a instrumental tool to characterize the topological nature of both fermionic and bosonic band structures. TQC is based on the study of band representations and the localization of maximally localized Wannier functions. In this article, we study various two-dimensional photonic crystal structures analyzing their topological character through a combined study of TQC, their Wilson-loop spectra and the electromagnetic energy density. Our study demonstrates that the analysis of the spatial localization of the energy density complements the study of the topological properties in terms of the spectrum of the Wilson-loop operator and TQC.

Abstract

We study the non-trivial phase of the two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice, displaying both edge and corner modes. The corner localized modes of a two-dimensional flake were initially identified as a signature of a higher-order topological phase but later shown to be trivial for perturbations that were thought to protect them. Using various theoretical and simulation techniques, we confirm that it does not display higher-order topology: the corner modes are of trivial nature. Nevertheless, they might be protected. First, we show a set of perturbations within a tight-binding model that can move the corner modes away from zero energy, also repeat some perturbations that were used to show that the modes are trivial. In addition, we analyze the protection of the corner modes in more detail and find that only perturbations respecting the sublattice or generalized chiral and crystalline symmetries, and the lattice connectivity, pin the corner modes to zero energy robustly. A destructive interference model corroborates the results. Finally, we analyze a muffin-tin model for the bulk breathing kagome lattice. Using topological and symmetry markers, such as Wilson loops and Topological Quantum Chemistry, we identify the two breathing phases as adiabatically disconnected different obstructed atomic limits., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

Abstract

Low and high temperature grown InGaAs/GaAs(001) epilayers have been studied by Transmission Electron Microscopy and Double Crystal X Ray Diffraction. Our results show that low temperature growth inhibits plastic relaxation, and misfit dislocations only appearing in the subsequent thermal annealing. The final plastic relaxation degree reached in this way is lower than in high temperature growth, due to the availability of a single surface where misfit dislocations could nucleate. In addition, we have observed that composition modulation even delays plastic relaxation flow, since it introduces tension points that block the dislocation movement, causing the strain-hardening of the alloy.En este trabajo se han estudiado capas simples de InGaAs/GaAs(001) crecidas a 200ºC y 500ºC por Microscopía Electrónica de Transmisión (TEM) y Difracción de Rayos X de Doble Cristal (DCXRD). Los resultados obtenidos muestran que el crecimiento a baja temperatura inhibe el proceso de relajación plástica, apareciendo las dislocaciones de desajuste (DD) durante el ciclo térmico posterior al crecimiento. El grado de relajación plástica final alcanzado en las muestras recocidas es inferior respecto de las crecidas a alta temperatura, debido a la existencia de una sola superficie donde nuclear dichas dislocaciones. Además, se ha observado que la modulación de composición también dificulta la relajación plástica, ya que introduce puntos de tensión en el seno del material que obstaculizan el movimiento de las dislocaciones, tanto en estructuras crecidas a alta como a baja temperatura.

Abstract

Transmission Electron Microscopy study of low temperature (200º C) grown InGaAs/GaAs(001) layers showed an unexpected Lomer dislocation network in the middle of the layer, which appears as a promising one for the effective structure relaxation without a high density of threading dislocations. However, the layer remained metastable, due to a lack in the relaxation degree. To take advantage of such a network, buffers layers were grown at 200º C by ALMBE, followed by a layer grown at 400ºC or 500ºC (in a dynamic and a stepped way), in order to reach the complete relaxation of the structure. Nevertheless, the Lomer network did not appear, substituted by a 60º dislocations one, placed in the region with the growth temperature change. The reasons of this change are discussed.El estudio mediante Microscopía Electrónica de Transmisión (TEM) de capas InGaAs/GaAs(001) crecidas a 200ºC reflejó la existencia de una red de dislocaciones de Lomer en el seno de la capa, muy prometedora para la efectiva relajación de la estructura con una disminución en la densidad de dislocaciones de propagación. Sin embargo, la capa presentaba un grado de relajación deficiente, por lo que resultaba metaestable. Con el fin de aprovechar las ventajas que ofrecía dicha red de Lomer, se crecieron capas de desacoplo a 200ºC seguidas de una capa a 400º o 500ºC (en forma dinámica y escalonada) para relajar completamente la estructura. No obstante, no se consiguió reproducir la mencionada red, observándose otra constituida por dislocaciones de 60º, situada en la zona de cambio entre las dos temperaturas de crecimiento utilizadas. Las razones de este cambio se discuten en el trabajo.

Abstract

The Sn-doping effects on the electrical conduction and optical properties of GaAs(631)A epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy were investigated. We found that the conduction type conversion, frequently observed in the doping of layers grown on high-index substrates, is avoided when tin-doping is implemented. The maximum free-carrier concentration (n) obtained in GaAs(631):Sn was 2 × 1019 cm−3, an order of magnitude higher than previously reported for GaAs(631):Si, and within the same order of magnitude for the growth of GaAs(100):Si. The electron mobility was suitable for many optoelectronic applications. Raman spectroscopy showed low lattice disorder in (631) oriented samples, compared with singular (100) samples. The photoluminescence characterization of the samples revealed the blueshift of the optical transitions close to E0 associated with the Moss–Burstein effect for Sn doping. Photoreflectance spectroscopy was used to study the doping properties at the critical points E1 and E1 + Δ1, where the major affectation with n was perceived in the broadening parameter Γ. 28. Analysis of the State Budget for Education of the Republic of Panama from 1990 to 2017

Abstract

The present research aims to analyze the Panamanian State Budget for Education according to the allocations approved by the government over the last 26 years. In the overall state budget, it is striking that the percentage allocated to education is far below the amount required. Education must be a priority for any state agenda if access is to be ensured to quality education that is equitable, inclusive, pertinent and comprehensive. The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommend that countries allocate 20% of overall state budgets to education. If a nation aims to develop, it must demonstrate a real and firm commitment to education by the political class and society as a whole; this commitment is embodied in the state budget designations for education.

Abstract

INTRODUCCIÓN: La enfermedad del ojo seco (EOS) es una patología ocular caracterizada por insuficiencia cuantitativa y/o cualitativa lagrimal o ineficacia en la distribución de la película lagrimal. Esto produce cambios patológicos en la superficie del ojo y síntomas característicos. Es una patología multifactorial, con una prevalencia que fluctúa entre el 10% y el 20% de la población y en el ámbito laboral se asocia al tiempo de permanencia frente a pantallas y dispositivos electrónicos. Dada la variedad de manifestaciones clínicas, subtipos de ojo seco, la disminución de la calidad de vida y, a veces, a manifestaciones oculares severas, es necesario realizar su correcto diagnóstico y oportuno tratamiento. OBJETIVO: Reportar la frecuencia de EOS y su asociación con el uso de dispositivos electrónicos. MATERIAL Y MÉTODO: Estudio observacional, transversal, analítico y prospectivo. Se incluyeron pacientes entre 20 y 50 años de edad que asistieron a una consulta de control oftalmológica en la Clínica Universitaria Reina Fabiola, en el periodo de febrero 2022 a julio 2022. Se valoraron las siguientes variables: edad, tiempo de uso de dispositivos electrónicos, signos y síntomas, cuestionario OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index), altura del menisco lagrimal, tinción con fluoresceína, tinción con verde de Lisamina, tiempo de ruptura pre corneal (TRP), test de Schirmer I (sin anestesia). Análisis estadístico: las características de la muestra de pacientes se reportaron con estadística descriptiva. Para determinar la frecuencia de EOS y la relación con el tiempo del uso de dispositivos electrónicos se realizó un test Mann Whitney. Para relacionar la frecuencia de EOS con los resultados del cuestionario OSDI se utilizó Chi cuadrado; y para correlacionar la frecuencia de EOS con las pruebas de diagnóstico se utilizó Chi cuadrado para variables cualitativas y Kruskal Wallis para variables cuantitativas. RESULTADOS: Evaluamos 100 pacientes, con una edad media de 33,38 (DE 7,93) años. El 85% (n=85) de los pacientes presentó algún signo o síntoma de EOS. El 22% (n=22) presentó EOS determinada a través de las pruebas de diagnóstico. La media diaria de uso de dispositivos electrónicos fue de 8,13 (DE 3,26) horas. No se hallaron diferencias significativas entre las horas diarias del uso de estos dispositivos con presencia o ausencia de ojo seco [8.10 (3.31) horas vs 8.23 (3.13); p>0,79]. El 60% (n=60) fue asintomático al OSDI. Se halló una relación estadísticamente significativa entre el cuestionario OSDI y la frecuencia de ojo seco (p1). CONCLUSION: El uso de dispositivos electrónicos no se asoció a EOS según lo estudiado, sin embargo, si se correlacionó a algunos de sus signos y síntomas. Para prevenir esta patología y minimizar sus impactos, se recomienda su correcto diagnóstico, tratamiento y educación de la población.
