Abstract

Computational creativity seeks to understand computational mechanisms that can be characterized as creative. The creation of new concepts is a central challenge for any creative system. In this paper, we outline different approaches to computational concept creation and then review conceptual representations relevant to concept creation, and therefore to computational creativity. The conceptual representations are organized in accordance with two important perspectives on the distinctions between them. One distinction is between symbolic, spatial and connectionist representations. The other is between descriptive and procedural representations. Additionally, conceptual representations used in particular creative domains, i.e. language, music, image and emotion, are reviewed separately. For every representation reviewed, we cover the inference it affords, the computational means of building it, and its application in concept creation.

Abstract

Although theoretical models of the structure of narrative arising from systematic analysis of corpora are available for domains such as Russian folk tales, there are no such sources for the plot lines of musical theatre. The present paper reports an effort of knowledge elicitation for features that characterise the narrative structure of plot in the particular domain of musical theatre. The following aspects are covered: identification of a valid vocabulary of abstract units to use in annotating musical theatre plots, development of a procedure for annotation - including a spread-sheet format for annotators to use, and a corresponding set of instructions to guide them through the process - selection of a corpus of musical theatre pieces that would constitute the corpus to be annotated, the annotation process itself and the results of post-processing the annotated corpus in search for insights on the narrative structure of musical theatre plots.

Abstract

Interactive storytelling systems have become very popular as they engage users in the creation of narrative. A fundamental challenge for such systems is that the users feel unconstrained in their exploration of the environment and yet retain for the author some control of what the user does. Traditional solutions address this challenge by hardening the authoring task, since much effort has to be devoted to create the story and the necessary mechanisms to provide the user with enough freedom that, at the same time, keeps the story consistent. We propose a solution based on dynamic narration that combines a set of authored materials associated with particular points in the environment and the exploratory movements of the user, and includes statements of varying emphasis to guide the user towards the desired elements. This allows the system to generate a narration in real time while giving the user the possibility to decide what to do. The solution has been field tested and results are reported on three different aspects: the freedom of the user in terms of combinations in which the authored material is traversed; the divergence of user explorations from author's intentions; and user response to guidance statements of differing emphasis. Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to motivate and describe a system that simplifies numerical expression in texts, along with an evaluation study in which experts in numeracy and literacy assessed the outputs of this system. We have worked with a collection of newspaper articles with a significant number of numerical expressions. The results are discussed in comparison to conclusions obtained from a prior empirical survey.
