It will focus on the conditions for occuring of this kind of isomers, their decay properties and systematics in their properties as far as experimental data are available.

3. Evaporation Residue Production in Complete and Incomplete Fusion Reactions of Ne-20 with Au-197 and Ho-165 at E = 14.9 x AMeV

Abstract

Velocity distributions of heavy residues (A_Res > A_Tar), produced in irradiations of Au-197 and Ho-165 with Ne-20 at bombarding energies of E = 208 MeV, have been measured at the velocity filter SHIP. While for the products from Ne-20 + Ho-165 just a mean value of v/v_CN = 0.91+-0.01 was obtained, individual residues, attributed to isotopes of astatine and polonium with mass numbers ranging from A=195 to A=203 could be identified by means of alpha - spectroscopy in the bombardments Au-197. A linear increase of the mean velocity from v/v_CN = 0.85 to v/v_CN = 0.93 with decreasing residue mass was observed. This effect was attributed to an increasing contribution of pre-equilibrium particle emission to the production of heavy residues. A quantititative estimation resulted in a 90 % contribution of pre-equilibrium processes to the production of astatine isotopes, and a 50 % contribution to the polonium isotopes.

4. Some Aspects on Identification, Decay Properties and Nuclear Structure of the Heaviest Nuclei

Abstract

Synthesis of new elements at the upper border of the charts of nuclei and investigation of their decay properties and nuclear structure has been one of the main research topics in low energy nuclear physics since more than five decades. Main items are the quest for the heaviest nuclei that can exist and the verification of the theoretical predicted spherical proton and neutron shells at Z = 114, 120 or 126 and N = 172 or 184. The scope of the present paper is to illustrate some technical and physical aspects in investigation of the heaviest nuclei ('superheavy nuclei') and to critical discuss some selected results, which from a strict scientific point of view are not completely clear so far, making partly also suggestions for alternatively interpretations. A complete review of the whole field of superheavy element research, however, is out of the scope of this paper.

The isotopes 255,256,258Rf were produced in the fusion-evaporation reactions 50Ti + 207,208Pb and 50Ti + 209Bi at GSI Darmstadt, using the velocity filter SHIP. Total kinetic energies of fragments from spontaneous fission for these isotopes were evaluated with a correction to pulse-height defect.

Abstract

Superheavy elements owe their stability due to a subtle balance between the disruptive Coulomb force and the attractive nuclear forces. Thus they represent an ideal laboratory to study basic interactions. The essential tools are detailed investigations of radioactive decay properties and nuclear structure of superheavy nuclei. The results of those studies will deliver valuable input to improve theoretical models. To fulfill this demand conclusive data of high quality are necessary, which is presently not so easy to meet due to small production cross sections and technical limitations (beam intensities, detection probabilities). Possibilities and problems concerning extraction of decay properties and nuclear structure information on the basis of a low number of observed decay events will be discussed for three illustrative examples, 257Rf, 257Lr, and 288Fl.

14. Nuclear Structure of the Heaviest Elements – Investigated at SHIP-GSI

Abstract

The quest for the heaviest nuclei that can exist is a basic topic in natural science as their stability is characterized by a delicate interplay of short range nuclear forces acting between the nucleons (protons and neutrons) and long-range Coulomb forces acting solely between charged particles, i.e. the protons. As the stability of a nucleus is strongly correlated to its structure, understanding the nuclear structure of heaviest nuclei is presently a main challenge of experimental and theoretical investigations concerning the field of Superheavy Elements. At the velocity filter SHIP at GSI Darmstadt an extensive program on nuclear structure investigations has been started about a decade ago. The project covered both as well systematic investigations of single particle levels in odd-mass isotopes populated by α-decay as investigation of two- or fourquasi-particle states forming K isomers and was supplemented by direct mass measurements at SHIPTRAP and investigation of spontaneous fission properties. Recent experimental studies allowed to extend the systematics of low lying levels in N = 151 and N = 153 up to 255Rf and 259Sg, investigation of possible relations between nuclear structure and fission properties of odd-mass nuclei and investigation of shell strengths at N = 152 and towards N = 162.

Abstract

Online gas-solid adsorption studies with single-atom quantities of Hg, Tl, and Pb, the lighter homologs of the superheavy elements (SHE) copernicium (Cn, Z=112), nihonium (Nh, Z=113), and flerovium (Fl, Z=114), were carried out using short-lived radioisotopes. The interaction with Au and SiO2 surfaces was studied and the overall chemical yield was determined. Suitable radioisotopes were produced in fusion-evaporation reactions, isolated in the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA, and flushed rapidly to an adjacent setup of two gas chromatography detector arrays covered with SiO2 (first array) and Au (second array). While Tl and Pb adsorbed on the SiO2 surface, Hg interacts only weakly and reached the Au-covered array. Our results contribute to elucidating the influence of relativistic effects on chemical properties of the heaviest elements by providing experimental data on these lighter homologs. Abstract

Using state-of-the-art γ-ray spectroscopic techniques, the first rotational band of a superheavy element, extending up to a spin of 20 ¯h, was discovered in the nucleus 256Rf. To perform such an experiment at the limits of the present instrumentation, several developments were needed. The most important of these developments was of an intense isotopically enriched 50Ti beam using the MIVOC method. The experimental set-up and subsequent analysis allowed the 256Rf ground-state band to be revealed. The rotational properties of the band are discussed and compared with neighboring transfermium nuclei through the study of their moments of inertia. These data suggest that there is no evidence of a significant deformed shell gap at Z = 104. peerReviewed

Abstract

By using the technique of correlating implanted evaporation residues and their subsequent fission decay, β-delayed fission (βDF) of 186Bi has been identified for the first time and βDF of 188Bi has been unambiguously confirmed. The experiments were performed at the velocity filter SHIP (GSI, Darmstadt). The βDF probabilities for both nuclides were qualitatively estimated, and, in particular indications for a large value in the case of 186Bi are regarded. peerReviewed

Abstract

The rotational band structure of the Z ¼ 104 nucleus 256Rf has been observed up to a tentative spin of 20@ using state-of-the-art -ray spectroscopic techniques. This represents the first such measurement in a superheavy nucleus whose stability is entirely derived from the shell-correction energy. The observed rotational properties are compared to those of neighboring nuclei and it is shown that the kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia are sensitive to the underlying single-particle shell structure and the specific location of high-j orbitals. The moments of inertia therefore provide a sensitive test of shell structure and pairing in superheavy nuclei which is essential to ensure the validity of contemporary nuclear models in this mass region. The data obtained show that there is no deformed shell gap at Z ¼ 104, which is predicted in a number of current self-consistent mean-field models. peerReviewed

Abstract

Fission fragment mass distributions were measured in heavy-ion induced fissions using 238U target nucleus. The measured mass distributions changed drastically with incident energy. The results are explained by a change of the ratio between fusion and qasifission with nuclear orientation. A calculation based on a fluctuation dissipation model reproduced the mass distributions and their incident energy dependence. Fusion probability was determined in the analysis, and the values were consistent with those determined from the evaporation residue cross sections.

Abstract

Online gas-solid adsorption studies with single-atom quantities of Hg, Tl, and Pb, the lighter homologs of the superheavy elements (SHE) copernicium (Cn, Z=112), nihonium (Nh, Z=113), and flerovium (Fl, Z=114), were carried out using short-lived radioisotopes. The interaction with Au and SiO2surfaces was studied and the overall chemical yield was determined. Suitable radioisotopes were produced in fusion-evaporation reactions, isolated in the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA, and flushed rapidly to an adjacent setup of two gas chromatography detector arrays covered with SiO2(first array) and Au (second array). While Tl and Pb adsorbed on the SiO2surface, Hg interacts only weakly and reached the Au-covered array. Our results contribute to elucidating the influence of relativistic effects on chemical properties of the heaviest elements by providing experimental data on these lighter homologs.

Abstract

Online gas-solid adsorption studies with single atom quantities of Hg, Tl, and Pb on SiO$_{2}$ and Au surfaces were carried out using short-lived radioisotopes with half-lives in the range of 4-49 s. This is a model study to measure adsorption enthalpies of superheavy elements Cn, Nh, and Fl. The short-lived isotopes were produced and separated by the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI. The products were stopped in He gas, and flushed into gas chromatography columns made of Si detectors whose surfaces were covered by SiO$_{2}$ or Au. The short-lived Tl and Pb were successfully measured by the Si detectors with the SiO$_{2}$ surface at room temperature. On the other hand, the Hg did not adsorb on the SiO$_{2}$ surface, but adsorbed on the Au surface. The results demonstrated that the adsorption properties of short-lived Hg, Tl, and Pb could be studied with this setup, and that this method is applicable to the experiment for Cn, Nh, and Fl., 半減期4$\sim$49秒の短寿命同位体を用いて、水銀(Hg), タリウム(Tl), 鉛(Pb)の単一原子レベルでのSiO$_{2}$及びAu表面への固体吸着挙動をオンライン気相実験により調べた。超重元素Cn, Nh, Flの吸着エンタルピー測定のためのモデル実験として実施した。短寿命同位体はドイツ重イオン研究所の反跳核分離装置TASCAを用いて生成・分離した。生成核はヘリウムガス中に捕集された後、SiO$_{2}$あるいはAuで表面を覆われたSi検出器で作製されたガスクロマトグラフィーカラムへと導入した。短寿命Tl及びPb同位体は室温においてSiO$_{2}$表面に吸着し、Si検出器で測定することに成功した。一方、HgはSiO$_{2}$表面には吸着せず、Au表面に吸着した。この結果より、本実験のセットアップを用いることで短寿命Hg, Tl, Pb同位体の吸着特性を調べることができると証明され、この手法がCn, Nh, Flの実験にも適用できることが確認された。
