Heuberger 2003 analyzed monolingual English (learners’) dictionaries with regard to anthropocentrism, an ideology that regards nature primarily from the viewpoint of its usefulness to human beings. Focusing on reference works published in the mid-1990s, that article identified strong anthropocentric biases concerning animals within definitions. 20 years later, the present article revisits the learners’ dictionaries examined in said study and investigates whether the treatment of animals has become more objective in the current editions. The article focuses on shift in the English Lexicography by the use of Corpora, electronic collections of authentic language data and tools. Topics discussed include functions of a dictionary making tool The Sketch Engine created by Adam Kilgarriff and Pavel Rychly which provides concordances in the KWIC format, English learner dictionary COBUILD5 which offer users direct access to corpus and online reference tool The LEAD (Louvain English for Academic Purposes Dictionary) for researchers.

The digitised version of Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary (EDO, 1896-1905) promises to be a lexicographic milestone for English dialect terms and phrases of the 18th and 19th centuries. in a research project in the English Department at the University of innsbruck, the c.5000 pages of the dictionary have been transferred into machine-readable text and parsed. Our aim is to produce an online version of the dictionary for research on the history of spoken and dialectal Late Modern English. The paper denzonstrates the complexity of the entries in the EDD and focuses on the questions of dialect attribution and of the definition of words and phrases as two cases in point.
