Search

Some Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) host outflows which have the potential to alter the host galaxy's evolution (AGN feedback). These outflows have been linked to enhanced radio emission. Here we investigate the connection between low-frequency radio emission using the International LOFAR Telescope and [O III] $\lambda$5007 ionised gas outflows using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) Deep Fields, we select 198 AGN with optical spectra, 115 of which are detected at 144 MHz, and investigate their low-frequency radio emission properties. The majority of our sample do not show a radio excess when considering radio luminosity - SFR relationship, and are therefore not driven by powerful jets. We extract the [O III] $\lambda$5007 kinematics and remove AGN luminosity dependencies by matching the radio detected and non-detected AGN in $L_{\mathrm{6\mu m}}$ and redshift. Using both spectral fitting and $W_{80}$ measurements, we find radio detected AGN have a higher outflow rate (67.2$\pm$3.4 percent) than the radio non-detected AGN (44.6$\pm$2.7 percent), indicating a connection between ionised outflows and the presence of radio emission. For spectra where there are two components of the [O III] emission line present, we normalise all spectra by the narrow component and find that the average broad component in radio detected AGN is enhanced compared to the radio non-detected AGN. This could be a sign of higher gas content, which is suggestive of a spatial relationship between [O III] outflows and radio emission in the form of either low-powered jets or shocks from AGN winds., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 15 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

We present a study of the effects of ultraviolet (UV) emission from active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the atmospheric composition of planets and potential impact on life. It is expected that all supermassive black holes, which reside at galactic centers, have gone through periods of high AGN activity in order to reach their current masses. We examine potential damaging effects on lifeforms on planets with different atmosphere types and receiving different levels of AGN flux, using data on the sensitivity of various species' cells to UV radiation to determine when radiation becomes ``dangerous''. We also consider potential chemical changes to planetary atmospheres as a result of UV radiation from AGN, using the PALEO photochemical model. We find the presence of sufficient initial oxygen (surface mixing ratio $\geq 10^{-3} \rm\, mol/mol$) in the planet's atmosphere allows a thicker ozone layer to form in response to AGN radiation, which reduces the level of dangerous UV radiation incident on the planetary surface from what it was in absence of an AGN. We estimate the fraction of solar systems in galaxies that would be affected by AGN UV radiation, and find that the impact is most pronounced in compact galaxies such as ``red nugget relics'', as compared to typical present-day ellipticals and spirals (using M87 and the Milky Way as examples). An unresolved question in studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is whether their different classes probe different evolutionary stages of black hole--host galaxy interaction. We present the projected two-point cross-correlation function between a sample of Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI)-matched AGN selected from Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) optical + Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer ($WISE$) mid-IR photometry, and DESI-designated luminous red galaxies, for $z\in 0.5-1.0$. The total overlap area is 43.4 deg$^2$, including $\sim27,000$ spectroscopic LRGs in our redshift range. We visually classified 1,991 matched HSC-DESI objects in our redshift range, spectroscopically confirming that 1,517 ($76\%$) of them are AGN. Of these 1,517 objects, $73\%$ are broad-line AGN, $27\%$ are obscured AGN. We infer that the parent HSC+$WISE$ AGN catalog has a number density of at least $\sim 240$ deg$^{-2}$, confirming it is one of the most complete optical/infrared AGN catalog to date. We investigate the AGN clustering as a function of the spectroscopic classification and infer the halo mass for each sample. The inferred average mass of the halos $\langle M_h\rangle$ that host unobscured broad-line AGN ($M_h \approx 10^{13.4}h^{-1}M_\odot$) is $\sim 5.5\times$ larger than the halos that host obscured AGN ($M_h \approx 10^{12.6}\, h^{-1}M_\odot$), at $2.8\sigma$ significance, in the same sense as our prior work based on photometric redshifts. This suggests that we may relax our concerns about systematic shifts in the inferred redshift distribution producing this halo mass difference. While we do not yet find statistically significant spectroscopic evidence that unobscured AGN reside in more massive halos than their obscured counterparts, further analyses are necessary to distinguish if more complex evolutionary histories are needed to model these AGN populations., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, submitted to ApJ

The MOOSE (Monitoring Observations of SMC X-1 Excursions) program uses the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer Mission (NICER) to monitor the high mass X-ray binary SMC X-1 during its superorbital period excursions. Here we perform X-ray spectral analyses of 26 NICER observations of SMC X-1, taken at the tail-end of the excursion between 2021-04-01 and 2022-01-05. We use a single spectral model to fit spectra observed in high, intermediate and low states, using a combination of a partial covering fraction model, a black-body disc, and a power-law component. We find that the partial covering fraction varies significantly with the superorbital state during superorbital excursion. Our findings suggest that the low/high state in SMC X-1 is caused by a very high obscuration of the accretion disk., Comment: 10 pages 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS

High-velocity outflows are ubiquitous in compact, massive (M$_* \sim$ 10$^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$), z $\sim$ 0.5 galaxies with extreme star formation surface densities ($\Sigma_{SFR} \sim$ 2000 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$). We have previously detected and characterized these outflows using MgII absorption lines. To probe their full extent, we present Keck/KCWI integral field spectroscopy of the [OII] and MgII emission nebulae surrounding all of the 12 galaxies in this study. We find that [OII] is more effective than MgII in tracing low surface brightness, extended emission in these galaxies. The [OII] nebulae are spatially extended beyond the stars, with radial extent R$_{90}$ between 10 and 40 kpc. The nebulae exhibit non-gravitational motions, indicating galactic outflows with maximum blueshifted velocities ranging from -335 to -1920 km s$^{-1}$. The outflow kinematics correlate with the bursty star formation histories of these galaxies. Galaxies with the most recent bursts of star formation (within the last $<$ 3 Myr) exhibit the highest central velocity dispersions ($\sigma >$ 400 km s$^{-1}$), while the oldest bursts have the lowest-velocity outflows. Many galaxies exhibit both high-velocity cores and more extended, slower-moving gas indicative of multiple outflow episodes. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are the signposts of black hole growth, and likely play an important role in galaxy evolution. An outstanding question is whether AGN of different spectral types indicate different evolutionary stages in the coevolution of black holes and galaxies. We present the angular correlation function between an AGN sample selected from the Hyper Suprime Camera Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) optical + Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-IR photometry, and a luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample from HSC-SSP. We investigate AGN clustering strength as a function of their luminosity and spectral features across three independent HSC fields totaling $\sim600\,{\rm deg^{2}}$, for $z\in0.6-1.2$ and AGN with $L_{6\mu m}>3\times10^{44}{\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}}$. There are $\sim28,500$ AGN and $\sim1.5$ million LRGs in our primary analysis. We determine the inferred average halo mass for the full AGN sample ($M_h \approx 10^{12.9}h^{-1}M_\odot$), and note that it does not evolve significantly as a function of redshift (over this narrow range) or luminosity. We find that, on average, unobscured AGN ($M_h \approx10^{13.3}h^{-1}M_\odot$) occupy $\sim4.5\times$ more massive halos than obscured AGN ($M_h \approx10^{12.6}h^{-1}M_\odot$), at $5\sigma$ statistical significance using 1-D uncertainties, and at $3\sigma$ using the full covariance matrix, suggesting a physical difference between unobscured and obscured AGN, beyond the line-of-sight viewing angle. Furthermore, we find evidence for a halo mass dependence on reddening level within the Type I AGN population, which could support the existence of a previously claimed dust-obscured phase in AGN-host galaxy coevolution. Supermassive Black Holes (BHs) are known to efficiently grow through gas accretion, but even sustained and intense mass build-up through this mechanism struggles to explain the assembly of the most massive BHs observed in the local Universe. Using the Chandra Deep-Wide Field Survey (CDFWS) in the Bo\"otes field, we measure BH--galaxy assembly in massive galaxies ($M_\star\gtrsim10^{10}\rm M_\odot$) through the AGN fraction and specific Black Hole accretion rate (sBHAR) distribution as a function of redshift and stellar mass. We determine stellar masses and star formation rates for a parent sample of optically selected galaxies as well as those with X-ray detections indicating the presence of an AGN through Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting. We derive a redshift-dependent mass completeness limit and extract X-ray information for every galaxy as to provide a comprehensive picture of the AGN population in massive galaxies. While X-ray AGN samples are dominated by moderately massive host galaxies of $M_{\star} \geqslant 10^{10}\rm M_{\odot}$, we do not find a strong stellar mass dependence in AGN fraction (to limits in sBHAR), indicating a bias towards massive galaxies in the observed samples. We derive BH-galaxy growth tracks over time, which reveal that while most BH mass has been accumulated since $z=4$ for lower mass BHs, the assembly of the most massive BHs is more complex, with little to no relative mass gain since $z=4$, implying that rapid and intense growth episodes prior to $z=4$ were necessary to form these massive BHs., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Coupling between relativistic jets launched by accreting supermassive black holes and the surrounding gaseous media is a vital ingredient in galaxy evolution models. To constrain the environments in which this feedback takes place over cosmic time, we study the host halo properties of luminous low-frequency radio galaxies ($L_{150 \ \mathrm{MHz}} \gtrsim$ 25.25 W/Hz) selected with the International LOFAR Telescope out to $z \sim 2$ through tomographic clustering and cosmic microwave background lensing measurements. We find that these systems occupy halos characteristic of galaxy groups ($M_h = 10^{13} - 10^{14} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$), evolving at a rate consistent with the mean growth rate of halos over the past $\sim$10 Gyr. The coevolution of the clustering and the luminosity function reveals that the duty cycle of these systems is of order $\sim 10\%$ but has been mildly increasing since $z\sim 2$, while the duty cycle of quasars has been declining. We estimate the characteristic kinetic heating power injected by powerful jets per halo as a function of mass, and compare to the same quantity injected by quasar winds. We find that powerful jet heating dominates over quasar winds in halos $M_h \gtrsim 10^{13} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$ at $z < 2$. These results conform to the paradigm of galaxy evolution in which mechanical jet power feedback is the dominant heating mechanism of the gas content of groups and clusters., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Spectropolarimetry is a powerful tool to investigate the central regions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as polarization signatures are key to probing magnetic field structure, evolution, and the physics of particle acceleration in jets. Optical linear polarization of blazars is typically greater than a few percent, indicating the emission is dominated by nonthermal synchrotron radiation, while polarization less than a few percent is common for other type 1 AGNs. We present a spectropolarimetric study of PKS 0637-75 and PKS 1510-089 to determine how the head-on orientation of a jet and dominant emission processes influence polarimetric variations in the broad lines and continuum. Observations were obtained biweekly from the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope. Variability in the continuum polarization is detected for both PKS 0637-75 and PKS 1510-089, with a total average level of 2.5% +/- 0.1% and 7.5% +/- 0.1%, respectively. There is no clear polarization in the broad Balmer emission lines and weak polarization in Mg II as the average level across all observations is 0.2% +/- 0.1% for Hbeta, 0.2% +/- 0.3% for Hgamma, and 0.6% +/- 0.2% for Mg II. We find that polarization measurements confirm the conclusions drawn from spectral energy distribution modeling of the disk-jet contributions to the emission as optical polarization and time variability for PKS 0637-75 are shown to be dominated by accretion disk emission while those of PKS 1510-089 are due to both disk and jet emission, with greater jet contribution during flaring states., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. JWST is revolutionizing our view of the early Universe by pushing the boundaries of detectable galaxies and black holes in redshift (upward) and mass (downward). The Little Red Dots (LRDs), detected by several surveys at $z > 4$, present a significant interpretational challenge, as their Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) can mimic both AGN and stellar population templates. This study analyzes 19 LRDs from the JADES survey, utilizing NIRCam and MIRI photometry. By performing SED fitting across a vast parameter space, we explore a broad range of AGN fractions, defined as the ratio of the monochromatic luminosities (AGN, galaxy, and dust) over a specified wavelength range, 0.4 - 0.7 $\mu m$ rest-frame. We find that 17 of the 19 LRDs investigated are consistent with having significant AGN contributions, with best-fitting AGN fractions ranging between 20% and 70%, while one galaxy shows a low AGN contribution (2%) and another appears to be purely star-forming. Moreover, assuming these LRDs do indeed host AGN, we can place limits on their black hole masses using the inferred AGN bolometric luminosities and adopting the Eddington limit. We find that, independent of the specific AGN fraction adopted, the LRDs' black holes are significantly overmassive relative to their host galaxies -- by $\sim 1$ dex, and up to $\sim 4$ dex in the most extreme cases -- compared to the local $M_{\bullet} - M_{\star}$ relation. The presence of overmassive black holes in the high-$z$ Universe may provide the strongest evidence yet of heavy black hole seeding occurring during the cosmic dark ages., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal. 13 pages, 6 figures

The discovery of Little Red Dots (LRDs) -- a population of compact, high-redshift, dust-reddened galaxies -- is one of the most surprising results from JWST. However, the nature of LRDs is still debated: does the near-infrared emission originate from accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs), or intense star formation? In this work, we utilize ultra-deep Chandra observations and study LRDs residing behind the lensing galaxy cluster, Abell~2744. We probe the X-ray emission from individual galaxies but find that they remain undetected and provide SMBH mass upper limits of $\lesssim(1.5-16)\times10^{6}~\rm{M_{\odot}}$ assuming Eddington limited accretion. To increase the signal-to-noise ratios, we conduct a stacking analysis of the full sample with a total lensed exposure time of $\approx87$~Ms. We also bin the galaxies based on their stellar mass, lensing magnification, and detected broad-line H$\alpha$ emission. For the LRDs exhibiting broad-line H$\alpha$ emission, there is a hint of a stacked signal ($\sim2.6\sigma$), corresponding to a SMBH mass of $\sim3.2\times10^{6}~\rm{M_{\odot}}$. Assuming unobscured, Eddington-limited accretion, this BH mass is at least 1.5 orders of magnitude lower than that inferred from virial mass estimates using JWST spectra. Given galaxy-dominated stellar mass estimates, our results imply that LRDs do not host over-massive SMBHs and/or accrete at a few percent of their Eddington limit. However, alternative stellar mass estimates may still support that LRDs host over-massive BHs. The significant discrepancy between the JWST and Chandra data hints that the scaling relations used to infer the SMBH mass from the H$\alpha$ line and virial relations may not be applicable for high-redshift LRDs., Comment: Accepted by ApJL; DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/ad5669

We present a catalog of hard X-ray serendipitous sources detected in the first 80 months of observations by the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). The NuSTAR serendipitous survey 80-month (NSS80) catalog has an unprecedented $\sim$ 62 Ms of effective exposure time over 894 unique fields (a factor of three increase over the 40-month catalog), with an areal coverage of $\sim $36 deg$^2$, larger than all NuSTAR extragalactic surveys. NSS80 provides 1274 hard X-ray sources in the $3-24$ keV band (822 new detections compared to the previous 40-month catalog). Approximately 76% of the NuSTAR sources have lower-energy ($<10$ keV) X-ray counterparts from Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift-XRT. We have undertaken an extensive campaign of ground-based spectroscopic follow-up to obtain new source redshifts and classifications for 427 sources. Combining these with existing archival spectroscopy provides redshifts for 550 NSS80 sources, of which 547 are classified. The sample is primarily composed of active galactic nuclei (AGN), detected over a large range in redshift ($z$ = 0.012-3.43), but also includes 58 spectroscopically confirmed Galactic sources. In addition, five AGN/galaxy pairs, one dual AGN system, one BL Lac candidate, and a hotspot of 4C 74.26 (radio quasar) have been identified. The median rest-frame $10-40$ keV luminosity and redshift of the NSS80 are $\langle{L_\mathrm{10-40 keV}}\rangle$ = 1.2 $\times$ 10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $\langle z \rangle = 0.56$. We investigate the optical properties and construct composite optical spectra to search for subtle signatures not present in the individual spectra, finding an excess of redder BL AGN compared to optical quasar surveys predominantly due to the presence of the host-galaxy and, at least in part, due to dust obscuration., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ:S. 57 pages, 32 figures

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman), NASA's next flagship observatory, has significant mission time to be spent on surveys for general astrophysics in addition to its three core community surveys. We considered what types of observations outside the core surveys would most benefit from early definition, given 700 hours of mission time in the first two years of Roman's operation. We recommend that a survey of the Galactic plane be defined early, based on the broad range of stakeholders for such a survey, the added scientific value of a first pass to obtain a baseline for proper motions complementary to Gaia's, and the significant potential synergies with ground-based surveys, notably the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) on Rubin. We adopt a Bayesian X-ray spectral approach to investigate the accretion properties of unobscured ($20<\log(N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}<22$) and obscured ($22< \log(N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}<24$) active galactic nuclei (AGN) to shed light on the orientation vs evolution scenarios for the origin of the obscuring material. For a sample of 3882 X-ray-selected AGN from the {\it Chandra} COSMOS Legacy, AEGIS and CDFS extragalactic surveys, we constrain their stellar masses, $M_\star$, intrinsic X-ray luminosities, $L_{\rm X}$, obscuring column densities, $N_{\rm H}$, and specific accretion rates $\lambda\propto L_{\rm X}/M_\star$. By combining these observables within a Bayesian non-parametric approach, we infer, for the first time, the specific accretion rate distribution (SARD) of obscured and unobscured AGN to $z\approx3$, i.e. the probability of a galaxy with mass $M_\star$ at redshift $z$ hosting an AGN with column density $N_{\rm H}$ and specific accretion rate $\lambda$. Our findings indicate that (1) both obscured and unobscured SARDs share similar shapes, shifting towards higher accretion rates with redshift, (2) unobscured SARDs exhibit a systematic offset towards higher $\lambda$ compared to obscured SARD for all redshift intervals, (3) the obscured AGN fraction declines sharply at $\log\lambda_{\rm break} \sim-2$ for $z <0.5$, but shifts to higher $\lambda$ values with increasing redshift, (4) the incidence of AGN within the theoretically unstable blow-out region of the $\lambda-N_{\rm H}$ plane increases with redshift. These observations provide compelling evidence for AGN "downsizing" and radiation-regulated nuclear-scale obscuration with an increasing host galaxy contribution towards higher redshifts., Comment: Published at MNRAS

Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) are believed to be the missing link between the supermassive black holes (BHs) found at the centers of massive galaxies and BHs formed through stellar core collapse. One of the proposed mechanisms for their formation is a collisional runaway process in high-density young star clusters, where an unusually massive object forms through repeated stellar collisions and mergers, eventually collapsing to form an IMBH. This seed IMBH could then grow further through binary mergers with other stellar-mass BHs. Here we investigate the gravitational-wave (GW) signals produced during these later IMBH--BH mergers. We use a state-of-the-art semi-analytic approach to study the stellar dynamics and to characterize the rates and properties of IMBH--BH mergers. We also study the prospects for detection of these mergers by current and future GW observatories, both space-based (LISA) and ground-based (LIGO Voyager, Einstein Telescope, and Cosmic Explorer). We find that most of the merger signals could be detected, with some of them being multi-band sources. A fundamental goal of modern-day astrophysics is to understand the connection between supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and galaxy evolution. Merging galaxies offer one of the most dramatic channels for galaxy evolution known, capable of driving inflows of gas into galactic nuclei, potentially fueling both star formation and central SMBH activity. Dual active galactic nuclei (dual AGNs) in late-stage mergers with nuclear pair separations $<10$ kpc are thus ideal candidates to study SMBH growth along the merger sequence since they coincide with the most transformative period for galaxies. However, dual AGNs can be extremely difficult to confirm and study. Hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) studies offer a relatively contamination-free tool for probing the dense obscuring environments predicted to surround the majority of dual AGN in late-stage mergers. To date, only a handful of the brightest and closest systems have been studied at these energies due to the demanding instrumental requirements involved. We demonstrate the unique capabilities of HEX-P to spatially resolve the soft and - for the first time - hard X-ray counterparts of closely-separated ($\sim2''-5''$) dual AGNs in the local Universe. By incorporating state-of-the-art physical torus models, we reproduce realistic broadband X-ray spectra expected for deeply embedded accreting SMBHs. Hard X-ray spatially resolved observations of dual AGNs - accessible only to HEX-P - will hence transform our understanding of dual AGN in the nearby Universe., Comment: Under review for Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

Since the discovery of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB), astronomers have strived to understand the accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) contributing to its peak in the 10-40 keV band. Existing soft X-ray telescopes could study this population up to only 10 keV, and, while NuSTAR (focusing on 3--24 keV) made great progress, it also left significant uncertainties in characterizing the hard X-ray population, crucial for calibrating current population synthesis models. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of simulations of two extragalactic surveys (deep and wide) with the High-Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P), each observed for 2 Ms. Applying established source detection techniques, we show that HEX-P surveys will reach a flux of $\sim$10$^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 10-40 keV band, an order of magnitude fainter than current NuSTAR surveys. With the large sample of new hard X-ray detected sources ($\sim2000$), we showcase HEX-P's ability to resolve more than 80% of the CXB up to 40 keV into individual sources. The expected precision of HEX-P's resolved background measurement will allow us to distinguish between population synthesis models of SMBH growth. HEX-P leverages accurate broadband (0.5-40 keV) spectral analysis and the combination of soft and hard X-ray colors to provide obscuration constraints even for the fainter sources, with the overall objective of measuring the Compton-thick fraction. With unprecedented sensitivity in the 10--40 keV band, HEX-P will explore the hard X-ray emission from AGN to flux limits never reached before, thus expanding the parameter space for serendipitous discoveries. A new class of extragalactic astronomical sources discovered in 2021, named Odd Radio Circles (ORCs, Norris et al. 2021), are large rings of faint, diffuse radio continuum emission spanning ~1 arcminute on the sky. Galaxies at the centers of several ORCs have photometric redshifts of z~0.3-0.6, implying physical scales of several 100 kiloparsecs in diameter for the radio emission, the origin of which is unknown. Here we report spectroscopic data on an ORC including strong [OII] emission tracing ionized gas in the central galaxy of ORC4 at z=0.4512. The physical extent of the [OII] emission is ~40 kpc in diameter, larger than expected for a typical early-type galaxy (Pandya et al, 2017) but an order of magnitude smaller than the large-scale radio continuum emission. We detect a ~200 km/s velocity gradient across the [OII] nebula, as well as a high velocity dispersion of ~180 km/s. The [OII] equivalent width (EW, ~50 Ang) is extremely high for a quiescent galaxy. The morphology, kinematics, and strength of the [OII] emission are consistent with the infall of shock ionized gas near the galaxy, following a larger-scale, outward moving shock driven by a galactic wind. In the standard quasar model, the accretion disk obscuration is due to the canonical dusty torus. Here, we argue that a substantial part of the quasar obscuration can come from the interstellar medium (ISM) when the quasars are embedded in compact starbursts. We use an obscuration-unbiased sample of 578 infrared (IR) quasars at $z\approx 1-3$ and archival ALMA submillimeter host galaxy sizes to investigate the ISM contribution to the quasar obscuration. We calculate SFR and ISM column densities for the IR quasars and a control sample of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) not hosting quasar activity and show that: (1) the quasar obscured fraction is constant up to $\rm SFR\approx 300 \: M_{\odot} \: yr^{-1}$, and then increases towards higher SFR, suggesting that the ISM obscuration plays a significant role in starburst host galaxies, and (2) at $\rm SFR\gtrsim 300 \: M_{\odot} \: yr^{-1}$, the SMGs and IR quasars have similarly compact submillimeter sizes ($R_{\rm e}\approx 0.5-3\rm \: kpc$) and, consequently, the ISM can heavily obscure the quasar, even reaching Compton-thick ($N_{\rm H}>10^{24} \rm \: cm^{-2}$) levels in extreme cases. Based on our results, we infer that $\approx 10-30\%$ of the IR quasars with $\rm SFR\gtrsim 300 \: M_{\odot} \: yr^{-1}$ are obscured solely by the ISM., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present Fabry-P\'erot (FP) imaging and longslit spectroscopy of the nearby Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068 using the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS) on the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) to observe the impact of the central Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) on the ionized gas in the galaxy on kiloparsec scales. With SALT RSS FP we are able to observe the H$\alpha$+[N II] emission line complex over a $\sim$2.6 arcmin$^2$ field of view. Combined with the longslit observation, we demonstrate the efficacy of FP spectroscopy for studying nearby Type II Seyfert galaxies and investigate the kiloparsec-scale ionized gas in NGC 1068. We confirm the results of previous work from the TYPHOON/Progressive Integral Step Method (PrISM) survey that the kiloparsec-scale ionized features in NGC 1068 are driven by AGN photoionization. We analyze the spatial variation of the AGN intensity to put forward an explanation for the shape and structure of the kiloparsec-scale ionization features. Using a toy model, we suggest the ionization features may be understood as a light-echo from a burst of enhanced AGN activity $\sim$2000 years in the past., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. By characterizing the contribution of stray light to large datasets from the NuSTAR X-ray observatory collected over 2012--2017, we report a measurement of the cosmic X-ray background in the 3--20 keV energy range. These data represent $\sim20\%$ sky coverage while avoiding Galactic Ridge X-ray emission and are less weighted by deep, survey fields than previous measurements with NuSTAR. Images in narrow energy bands are stacked in detector space and spatially fit with a model representing the stray light and uniform pattern expected from the cosmic X-ray background and the instrumental background, respectively. We establish baseline flux values from Earth-occulted data and validate the fitting method on stray light observations of the Crab, which further serve to calibrate the resulting spectra. We present independent spectra of the cosmic X-ray background with the FPMA and FPMB detector arrays, which are in excellent agreement with the canonical characterization by HEAO 1 and are $10\%$ lower than most subsequent measurements; $F_{\rm{3-20~keV}}^{FPMA} = 2.63 \times 10^{-11}~\rm{erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}~deg^{-2}}$ and $F_{\rm{3-20~keV}}^{FPMB} = 2.58 \times 10^{-11}~\rm{erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}~deg^{-2}}$. We perform X-ray spectral analyses to derive characteristics (e.g., column density, X-ray luminosity) of $\approx$10,200 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS), which was designed to investigate the growth of supermassive black holes across a wide dynamic range of cosmic environments. Using physical torus models (e.g., Borus02) and a Bayesian approach, we uncover 22 representative Compton-thick (CT; $N_{\rm H} \;>\; 1.5\times10^{24}\; \rm cm^{-2}$) AGN candidates with good signal-to-noise ratios as well as a large sample of 136 heavily obscured AGNs. We also find an increasing CT fraction (\fct ) from low ($z<0.75$) to high ($z>0.75$) redshift. Our CT candidates tend to show hard X-ray spectral shapes and dust extinction in their SED fits, which may shed light on the connection between AGN obscuration and host-galaxy evolution., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new estimates on the fraction of heavily X-ray obscured, Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) out to a redshift of $z \leq$ 0.8. From a sample of 540 AGNs selected by mid-IR (MIR) properties in observed X-ray survey fields, we forward model the observed-to-intrinsic X-ray luminosity ratio ($R_{L_{\text{X}}}$) with a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation to estimate the total fraction of CT AGNs ($f_{\text{CT}}$), many of which are missed in typical X-ray observations. We create model $N_{\text{H}}$ distributions and convert these to $R_{L_{\text{X}}}$ using a set of X-ray spectral models. We probe the posterior distribution of our models to infer the population of X-ray non-detected sources. From our simulation we estimate a CT fraction of $f_{\text{CT}}$ = $\text{0.555}^{+\text{0.037}}_{-\text{0.032}}$. We perform an X-ray stacking analysis for sources in Chandra X-ray Observatory fields and find that the expected soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (2-7 keV) observed fluxes drawn from our model to be within 0.48 and 0.12 dex of our stacked fluxes, respectively. Our results suggests at least 50% of all MIR-selected AGNs, possibly more, are Compton-thick ($N_{\text{H}} \gtrsim$ 10$^{\text{24}}$ cm$^{-\text{2}}$), which is in excellent agreement with other recent work using independent methods. This work indicates that the total number of AGNs is higher than can be identified using X-ray observations alone, highlighting the importance of a multiwavelength approach. A high $f_{\text{CT}}$ also has implications for black hole (BH) accretion physics and supports models of BH and galaxy co-evolution that include periods of heavy obscuration., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, plus appendix figures. We present results on the properties of extreme gas outflows in massive ($\rm M_* \sim$10$^{11} \ \rm M_{\odot}$), compact, starburst ($\rm SFR \sim$$200 \, \rm M_{\odot} \ yr^{-1}$) galaxies at z = $0.4-0.7$ with very high star formation surface densities ($\rm \Sigma_{SFR} \sim$$2000 \,\rm M_{\odot} \ yr^{-1} \ kpc^{-2}$). Using optical Keck/HIRES spectroscopy of 14 HizEA starburst galaxies we identify outflows with maximum velocities of $820 - 2860$ \kmps. High-resolution spectroscopy allows us to measure precise column densities and covering fractions as a function of outflow velocity and characterize the kinematics and structure of the cool gas outflow phase (T $\sim$10$^4$ K). We find substantial variation in the absorption profiles, which likely reflects the complex morphology of inhomogeneously-distributed, clumpy gas and the intricacy of the turbulent mixing layers between the cold and hot outflow phases. There is not a straightforward correlation between the bursts in the galaxies' star formation histories and their wind absorption line profiles, as might naively be expected for starburst-driven winds. The lack of strong \mgii \ absorption at the systemic velocity is likely an orientation effect, where the observations are down the axis of a blowout. We infer high mass outflow rates of $\rm \sim$50 $-$ 2200 $\rm M_{\odot} \, yr^{-1}$, assuming a fiducial outflow size of 5 kpc, and mass loading factors of $\eta\sim$5 for most of the sample. %with $\eta\sim$20 for two galaxies. The Makani galaxy hosts the poster child of a galactic wind on scales of the circumgalactic medium. It consists of a two-episode wind in which the slow, outer wind originated 400 Myr ago (Episode I; R_I = 20-50 kpc) and the fast, inner wind is 7 Myr old (Episode II; R_II = 0-20 kpc). While this wind contains ionized, neutral, and molecular gas, the physical state and mass of the most extended phase--the warm, ionized gas--is unknown. Here we present Keck optical spectra of the Makani outflow. These allow us to detect hydrogen lines out to r = 30-40 kpc and thus constrain the mass, momentum, and energy in the wind. Many collisionally-excited lines are detected throughout the wind, and their line ratios are consistent with 200-400 km/s shocks that power the ionized gas, with v_shock = $\sigma$_wind. Combining shock models, density-sensitive line ratios, and mass and velocity measurements, we estimate that the ionized mass and outflow rate in the Episode II wind could be as high as that of the molecular gas: M_II(HII) ~ M_II(H_2) = (1-2)x10^9 Msun and dM/dt_II(HII) ~ dM/dt_II(H_2) = 170-250 Msun/yr. The outer wind has slowed, so that dM/dt_I(HII) ~ 10 Msun/yr, but it contains more ionized gas: M_I(HII) = 5x10^9 Msun. The momentum and energy in the recent Episode II wind imply a momentum-driven flow (p ``boost" ~ 7) driven by the hot ejecta and radiation pressure from the Eddington-limited, compact starburst. Much of the energy and momentum in the older Episode I wind may reside in a hotter phase, or lie further into the CGM., Comment: ApJ, in press

Obscuration in quasars may arise from steep viewing angles along the dusty torus, or instead may represent a distinct phase of supermassive black hole growth. We test these scenarios by probing the host dark matter halo environments of $\sim 1.4$ million WISE-selected obscured and unobscured quasars at $\langle z \rangle = 1.4$ using angular clustering measurements as well as cross-correlation measurements of quasar positions with the gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We interpret these signals within a halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework to conclude that obscured systems reside in more massive effective halos ($ \sim 10^{12.9} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$) than their unobscured counterparts ($ \sim 10^{12.6} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$), though we do not detect a difference in the satellite fraction. We find excellent agreement between the clustering and lensing analyses and show that this implies the observed difference is robust to uncertainties in the obscured quasar redshift distribution, highlighting the power of combining angular clustering and weak lensing measurements. This finding appears in tension with models that ascribe obscuration exclusively to orientation of the dusty torus along the line-of-sight, and instead may be consistent with the notion that some obscured quasars are attenuated by galaxy-scale or circumnuclear material during an evolutionary phase., Comment: Accepted to The Astrophysical Journal

SMC X-1 is a high-mass X-ray binary showing superorbital modulation with an unstable period. Previous monitoring shows three excursion events in 1996--1998, 2005--2007, and 2014--2016. The superorbital period drifts from >60 days to <40 days and then evolves back during an excursion. Here we report a new excursion event of SMC X-1 in 2020--2021, indicating that the superorbital modulation has an unpredictable, chaotic nature. We trace the spin-period evolution and find that the spin-up rate accelerated one year before the onset of this new excursion, which suggests a possible inside-out process connecting the spin-up acceleration and the superorbital excursion. This results in a deviation of the spin period residual, similar to the behaviour of the first excursion in 1996--1998. In further analysis of the pulse profile evolution, we find that the pulsed fraction shows a long-term evolution and may be connected to the superorbital excursion. These discoveries deepen the mystery of SMC X-1 because they cannot be solely interpreted by the warped disc model. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are accreting supermassive black holes co-evolving with their host galaxies through a complex interplay of feeding and feedback. In this chapter, we first discuss AGN fuelling in galaxies, both in interacting and isolated systems, focusing on the role that instabilities have on the angular momentum budget of the gas. We then review observations and models of feedback through AGN-driven winds from nuclear, sub-pc scales out to galactic and circumgalactic medium scales. We constrain the intrinsic Eddington ratio (\lamEdd ) distribution function for local AGN in bins of low and high obscuration (log NH <= 22 and 22 < log NH < 25), using the Swift-BAT 70-month/BASS DR2 survey. We interpret the fraction of obscured AGN in terms of circum-nuclear geometry and temporal evolution. Specifically, at low Eddington ratios (log lamEdd < -2), obscured AGN outnumber unobscured ones by a factor of ~4, reflecting the covering factor of the circum-nuclear material (0.8, or a torus opening angle of ~ 34 degrees). At high Eddington ratios (\log lamEdd > -1), the trend is reversed, with < 30% of AGN having log NH > 22, which we suggest is mainly due to the small fraction of time spent in a highly obscured state. Considering the Eddington ratio distribution function of narrow-line and broad-line AGN from our prior work, we see a qualitatively similar picture. To disentangle temporal and geometric effects at high lamEdd, we explore plausible clearing scenarios such that the time-weighted covering factors agree with the observed population ratio. We find that the low fraction of obscured AGN at high lamEdd is primarily due to the fact that the covering factor drops very rapidly, with more than half the time is spent with < 10% covering factor. We also find that nearly all obscured AGN at high-lamEdd exhibit some broad-lines. We suggest that this is because the height of the depleted torus falls below the height of the broad-line region, making the latter visible from all lines of sight., Comment: Accepted by ApJL

We present a measurement of the intrinsic space density of intermediate redshift ($z\sim0.5$), massive ($M_{*} \sim 10^{11} \ \text{M}_{\odot}$), compact ($R_{e} \sim 100$ pc) starburst ($\Sigma_{SFR} \sim 1000 \ \text{M}_{\odot} \ \text{yr}^{-1} \text{kpc}^{-1}$) galaxies with tidal features indicative of them having undergone recent major mergers. A subset of them host kiloparsec scale, $>1000 \ \text{km}\ \text{s}^{-1}$ outflows and have little indication of AGN activity, suggesting that extreme star formation can be a primary driver of large-scale feedback. The aim for this paper is to calculate their space density so we can place them in a better cosmological context. We do this by empirically modeling the stellar populations of massive, compact starburst galaxies. We determine the average timescale for which galaxies that have recently undergone an extreme nuclear starburst would be targeted and included in our spectroscopically selected sample. We find that massive, compact starburst galaxies targeted by our criteria would be selectable for $\sim 148 ^{+27}_{-24}$ Myr and have an intrinsic space density $n_{\text{CS}} \sim (1.1^{+0.5}_{-0.3}) \times 10^{-6} \ \ \text{Mpc}^{-3}$. This space density is broadly consistent with our $z\sim0.5$ compact starbursts being the most extremely compact and star forming low redshift analogs of the compact star forming galaxies in the early Universe as well as them being the progenitors to a fraction of intermediate redshift post starburst and compact quiescent galaxies., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the dwarf Seyfert-2 galaxy J$144013+024744$, a candidate obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) thought to be powered by an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH, $M_\bullet \approx 10^{4-6} M_\odot$) of mass $M_{\bullet} \sim 10^{5.2}M_\odot$. To study its X-ray properties, we targeted J$144013+024744$ with NuSTAR for $\approx 100$ ks. The X-ray spectrum was fitted with absorbed power law, Pexmon and a physical model (RXTorus). A Bayesian X-ray analysis was performed to estimate the posteriors. The phenomenological and the physical models suggest the AGN to be heavily obscured by a column density of $N_{\rm H} = (3.4-7.0)\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. In particular, the RXTorus model with a sub-solar metallicity suggests the obscuring column to be almost Compton-thick. We compared the $2-10$ keV intrinsic X-ray luminosity with the inferred X-ray luminosities based on empirical scaling relations for unobscured AGNs using $L_{\rm [OIV](25.89\mu {\rm m})}$, $L_{[{\rm OIII}](5007 {\rm angstrom})}$, and $L_{6\rm \mu m}$ and found that the high-excitation $[{\rm OIV}]$ line provides a better estimate of the intrinsic $2-10$ keV X-ray luminosity ($L_{2-10}^{\rm int} \sim 10^{41.41}{\rm erg s}^{-1}$). Our results suggest that J$144013+024744$ is the first type-2 dwarf galaxy that shows X-ray spectroscopic evidence for obscuration. The column density that we estimated is among the highest measured to date for IMBH-powered AGNs, implying that a typical AGN torus geometry might extend to the low-mass end. High-accuracy black hole (BH) masses require excellent spatial resolution that is only achievable for galaxies within ~100 Mpc using present-day technology. At larger distances, BH masses are often estimated with single-epoch scaling relations for active galactic nuclei. This method requires only luminosity and the velocity dispersion of the broad line region (BLR) to calculate a virial product, and an additional virial factor, $f$, to determine BH mass. The accuracy of these single-epoch masses, however, is unknown, and there are few empirical constraints on the variance of $f$ between objects. We attempt to calibrate single-epoch BH masses using spectropolarimetric measurements of nine megamaser galaxies from which we measure the velocity distribution of the BLR. We do not find strong evidence for a correlation between the virial products used for single-epoch masses and dynamical mass, neither for the megamaser sample alone or when combined with dynamical masses from reverberation mapping modeling. Furthermore, we find evidence that the virial parameter $f$ varies between objects, but we do not find strong evidence for a correlation with other observable parameters such as luminosity or broad line width. Although we cannot definitively rule out the existence of any correlation between dynamical mass and virial product, we find tension between allowed $f$ values for masers and those widely used in the literature. We present a new statistical method for constructing background subtracted measurements from event list data gathered by X-ray and gamma ray observatories. This method was initially developed specifically to construct images that account for the high background fraction and low overall count rates observed in survey data from the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope aboard the Spektrum R\"{o}ntgen Gamma (SRG) mission, although the mathematical underpinnings are valid for data taken with other imaging missions and analysis applications. This method fully accounts for the expected Poisson fluctuations in both the sky photon and non X-ray background count rates in a manner that does not result in unphysical negative counts. We derive the formulae for arbitrary confidence intervals for the source counts and show that our new measurement converges exactly to the standard background subtraction calculation in the high signal limit. Utilizing these results, we discuss several variants of images designed to optimize different science goals for both pointed and slewing telescopes. Using realistic simulated data of a galaxy cluster as observed by ART-XC we show that our method provides a more significant and robust detection of the cluster emission as compared to a standard background subtraction. We also demonstrate its advantages using real observations of a point source from the ART-XC telescope. We present an analysis of 10 ks snapshot Chandra observations of 12 shocked post-starburst galaxies, which provide a window into the unresolved question of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in post-starburst galaxies and its role in the transition of galaxies from actively star forming to quiescence. While 7/12 galaxies have statistically significant detections (with 2 more marginal detections), the brightest only obtained 10 photons. Given the wide variety of hardness ratios in this sample, we chose to pursue a forward modeling approach to constrain the intrinsic luminosity and obscuration of these galaxies rather than stacking. We constrain intrinsic luminosity of obscured power-laws based on the total number of counts and spectral shape, itself mostly set by the obscuration, with hardness ratios consistent with the data. We also tested thermal models. While all the galaxies have power-law models consistent with their observations, a third of the galaxies are better fit as an obscured power-law and another third are better fit as thermal emission. If these post-starburst galaxies, early in their transition, contain AGN, then these are mostly confined to a lower obscuration ($n_H \leq10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) and lower luminosity ($L_{2-10~ \rm keV}\leq10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$). Two galaxies, however, are clearly best fit as significantly obscured AGN. At least half of this sample show evidence of at least low luminosity AGN activity, though none could radiatively drive out the remaining molecular gas reservoirs. SMC X-1 has exhibited three super-orbital period excursions since the onset of X-ray monitoring beginning with RXTE's launch in 1995. NICER has recently probed a fourth observed excursion beginning in 2021 with our program Monitoring Observations of SMC X-1's Excursions (MOOSE). These sensitive new MOOSE data probe different super-orbital periods and phases within them. Spectral fits to the high-state continuum during April 2021 to January 2022 show that the intrinsic spectral shapes are characterised by a soft (kT~0.19 keV) disc component and a hard (Gamma~0.7) power-law tail. When the 2021-2022 NICER observations, taken during an excursion, are compared to 2016 XMM-Newton observations (outside of an excursion), we find little evidence for intrinsic spectral variability across the high-states, but find evidence for a >3 sigma change in the absorption, although we caution that there may be calibration differences between the two instruments. Thus, over different lengths of super-orbital periods, we see little evidence for intrinsic spectral changes in the high-state. We present a $z = 0.94$ quasar, SDSS J004846.45-004611.9, discovered in the SDSS-III BOSS survey. A visual analysis of this spectrum reveals highly broadened and blueshifted narrow emission lines, in particular [Ne~V]$\lambda3426$ and [O~III]$\lambda5007$, with outflow velocities of 4000 km s$^{-1}$, along with unusually large [Ne V]$\lambda3426$/[Ne III]$\lambda3869$ ratios. The gas shows higher ionization at higher outflow velocities, indicating a connection between the powerful outflow and the unusual strength of the high ionization lines. The SED and the $i - \text{W3}$ color of the source reveal that it is likely a "core" Extremely Red Quasar (core ERQ); a candidate population of young AGN that are violently "blowing out" gas and dust from their centers. The dominance of host galaxy light in its spectrum and its fortuitous position in the SDSS S82 region allows us to measure its star formation history and investigate for variability for the first time in an ERQ. Our analysis indicates that SDSS J004846.45-004611.9 underwent a short-lived starburst phase 400 Myr ago and was subsequently quenched, possibly indicating a time-lag between star formation quenching and the onset of AGN activity. We also find that the strong extinction can be uniquely attributed to the AGN and does not persist in the host galaxy, contradicting a scenario where the source has recently transitioned from being a dusty sub-mm galaxy. In our relatively shallow photometric data, the source does not appear to be variable at $0.24-2.4~\mu$m in the restframe, most likely due to the dominant contribution of host galaxy starlight at these wavelengths., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The observed optical colors of quasars are generally interpreted in one of two frameworks: unified models which attribute color to random orientation of the accretion disk along the line-of-sight, and evolutionary models which invoke connections between quasar systems and their environments. We test these schema by probing the dark matter halo environments of optically-selected quasars as a function of $g-i$ optical color by measuring the two-point correlation functions of $\sim$ 0.34 million eBOSS quasars as well as the gravitational deflection of cosmic microwave background photons around $\sim$ 0.66 million XDQSO photometric quasar candidates. We do not detect a trend of halo bias with optical color through either analysis, finding that optically-selected quasars at $0.8 < z < 2.2$ occupy halos of characteristic mass $M_{h}\sim 3\times 10^{12} \ h^{-1} M_{\odot}$ regardless of their color. This result implies that a quasar's large-scale halo environment is not strongly connected to its observed optical color. We also confirm findings of fundamental differences in the radio properties of red and blue quasars by stacking 1.4 GHz FIRST images at their positions, suggesting the observed differences cannot be attributed to orientation. Instead, the differences between red and blue quasars likely arise on nuclear-galactic scales, perhaps owing to reddening by a nuclear dusty wind. Finally, we show that optically-selected quasars' halo environments are also independent of their $r-W2$ optical-infrared colors, while previous work has suggested that mid-infrared-selected obscured quasars occupy more massive halos. We determine the low-redshift X-ray luminosity function (XLF), active black hole mass function (BHMF), and Eddington-ratio distribution function (ERDF) for both unobscured (Type 1) and obscured (Type 2) active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the unprecedented spectroscopic completeness of the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) data release 2. In addition to a straightforward 1/Vmax approach, we also compute the intrinsic distributions, accounting for sample truncation by employing a forward modeling approach to recover the observed BHMF and ERDF. As previous BHMFs and ERDFs have been robustly determined only for samples of bright, broad-line (Type 1) AGNs and/or quasars, ours is the first directly observationally constrained BHMF and ERDF of Type 2 AGN. We find that after accounting for all observational biases, the intrinsic ERDF of Type 2 AGN is significantly skewed towards lower Eddington ratios than the intrinsic ERDF of Type 1 AGN. This result supports the radiation-regulated unification scenario, in which radiation pressure dictates the geometry of the dusty obscuring structure around an AGN. Calculating the ERDFs in two separate mass bins, we verify that the derived shape is consistent, validating the assumption that the ERDF (shape) is mass independent. We report the local AGN duty cycle as a function of mass and Eddington ratio, by comparing the BASS active BHMF with the local mass function for all SMBH. We present results on the nature of extreme ejective feedback episodes and the physical conditions of a population of massive ($\rm M_* \sim 10^{11} M_{\odot}$), compact starburst galaxies at z = 0.4-0.7. We use data from Keck/NIRSPEC, SDSS, Gemini/GMOS, MMT, and Magellan/MagE to measure rest-frame optical and near-IR spectra of 14 starburst galaxies with extremely high star formation rate surface densities (mean $\rm \Sigma_{SFR} \sim 3000 \,M_{\odot} yr^{-1} kpc^{-2}$) and powerful galactic outflows (maximum speeds v$_{98} \sim$ 1000-3000 km s$^{-1}$). Our unique data set includes an ensemble of both emission [OII]$\lambda\lambda$3726,3729, H$\beta$, [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007, H$\alpha$, [NII]$\lambda\lambda$6548,6583, and [SII]$\lambda\lambda$6716,6731) and absorption MgII$\lambda\lambda$2796,2803, and FeII$\lambda$2586) lines that allow us to investigate the kinematics of the cool gas phase (T$\sim$10$^4$ K) in the outflows. Employing a suite of line ratio diagnostic diagrams, we find that the central starbursts are characterized by high electron densities (median n$_e \sim$ 530 cm$^{-3}$), and high metallicity (solar or super-solar). We show that the outflows are most likely driven by stellar feedback emerging from the extreme central starburst, rather than by an AGN. We also present multiple intriguing observational signatures suggesting that these galaxies may have substantial Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage, including weak [SII] nebular emission lines. Our results imply that these galaxies may be captured in a short-lived phase of extreme star formation and feedback where much of their gas is violently blown out by powerful outflows that open up channels for LyC photons to escape.

Many X-ray bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) are predicted to follow an extended stage of obscured black hole growth. In support of this picture we examine the X-ray undetected AGNs in the COSMOS field and compare their host galaxies with X-ray bright AGNs. We examine galaxies with M_\ast>10^{9.5}M_\odot for the presence of AGNs at redshifts $z=0.5-3$. We select AGNs in the infrared using \textit{Spitzer} and \textit{Herschel} detections and use color selection techniques to select AGNs within strongly star forming hosts. We stack \textit{Chandra} X-ray data of galaxies with an IR detection but lacking an X-ray detection to obtain soft and hard fluxes, allowing us to measure the energetics of these AGNs. We find a clear correlation between X-ray luminosity and IR AGN luminosity in the stacked galaxies. We also find that X-ray undetected AGNs all lie on the main sequence -- the tight correlation between SFR and $M_\ast$ that holds for the majority of galaxies, regardless of mass or redshift. This work demonstrates that there is a higher population of obscured AGNs than previously thought.

In active galactic nuclei (AGN), fluorescent Fe K$\alpha$ (iron) line emission is generally interpreted as originating from obscuring material around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) on the scale of a few parsecs (pc). However, recent Chandra studies indicate the existence of iron line emission extending to kpc scales in the host galaxy. The connection between iron line emission and large-scale material can be spatially resolved directly only in nearby galaxies, but could be inferred in more distant AGNs by a connection between line emission and star-forming gas and dust that is more extended than the pc-scale torus. Here we present the results from a stacking analysis and X-ray spectral fitting performed on sources in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) 7 Ms observations. From the deep stacked spectra, we select sources with stellar mass $\log(M_*/M_\odot)>10$ at $0.5

We present multi-band Hubble Space Telescope imaging that spans rest-frame near-ultraviolet through near-infrared wavelengths (0.3-1.1 $\mu$m) for 12 compact starburst galaxies at z=0.4-0.8. These massive galaxies (M_stellar ~ 10^11 M_Sun) are driving very fast outflows ($v_{max}$=1000-3000 km/s), and their light profiles are dominated by an extremely compact starburst component (half-light radius ~ 100 pc). Our goal is to constrain the physical mechanisms responsible for launching these fast outflows by measuring the physical conditions within the central kiloparsec. Based on our stellar population analysis, the central component typically contributes $\approx$25% of the total stellar mass and the central escape velocities $v_{esc,central}\approx900$ km/s are a factor of two smaller than the observed outflow velocities. This requires physical mechanisms that can accelerate gas to speeds significantly beyond the central escape velocities, and it makes clear that these fast outflows are capable of traveling into the circumgalactic medium, and potentially beyond. We find central stellar densities comparable to theoretical estimates of the Eddington limit, and we estimate $\Sigma_1$ surface densities within the central kpc comparable to those of compact massive galaxies at $0.5

We present a broad-band X-ray timing study of the variations in pulse behavior with superorbital cycle in the low-mass X-ray binary Her X-1. This source shows a 35-day superorbital modulation in X-ray flux that is likely caused by occultation by a warped, precessing accretion disk. Our data set consists of four joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of Her X-1 which sample a complete superorbital cycle. We focus our analysis on the first and fourth observations, which occur during the bright "main-on" phase, because these observations have strongly detected pulsations. We added an archival XMM-Newton observation during the "short-on" phase of the superorbital cycle since our observations at that phase are lower in signal to noise. We find that the energy-resolved pulse profiles show the same shape at similar superorbital phases and the profiles are consistent with expectations from a precessing disk. We demonstrate that a simple precessing accretion disk model is sufficient to reproduce the observed pulse profiles. The results of this model suggest that the similarities in the observed pulse profiles are due to reprocessing by a precessing disk that has returned to its original precession phase. We determine that the broad-band spectrum is well fit by an absorbed power law with a soft blackbody component, and show that the spectral continuum also exhibits dependence on the superorbital cycle. We present a study of the relationship between black hole accretion rate (BHAR) and star formation rate (SFR) in a sample of giant elliptical galaxies. These galaxies, which live at the centers of galaxy groups and clusters, have star formation and black hole activity that is primarily fueled by gas condensing out of the hot intracluster medium. For a sample of 46 galaxies spanning 5 orders of magnitude in BHAR and SFR, we find a mean ratio of log(BHAR/SFR) = -1.45 +/- 0.2, independent of the methodology used to constrain both SFR and BHAR. This ratio is significantly higher than most previously-published values for field galaxies. We investigate whether these high BHAR/SFR ratios are driven by high BHAR, low SFR, or a different accretion efficiency in radio galaxies. The data suggest that the high BHAR/SFR ratios are primarily driven by boosted black hole accretion in spheroidal galaxies compared to their disk counterparts. We propose that angular momentum of the cool gas is the primary driver in suppressing BHAR in lower mass galaxies, with massive galaxies accreting gas that has condensed out of the hot phase on nearly radial trajectories. Additionally, we demonstrate that the relationship between specific BHAR and SFR has much less scatter over 6 orders of magnitude in both parameters, due to competing dependence on morphology between the M_BH--M_* and BHAR--SFR relations. In general, active galaxies selected by typical techniques have sBHAR/sSFR ~ 10, while galactic nuclei with no clear AGN signatures have sBHAR/sSFR ~ 1, consistent with a universal M_BH--M_spheroid relation., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure. We present a large sample of infrared-luminous candidate active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that lack X-ray detections in Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR fields. We selected all optically detected SDSS sources with redshift measurements, combined additional broadband photometry from WISE, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and GALEX, and modeled the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of our sample sources. We parameterize nuclear obscuration in our SEDs with $E(B\!-\!V)_{\text{AGN}}$ and uncover thousands of powerful obscured AGNs that lack X-ray counterparts, many of which are identified as AGN candidates based on straightforward WISE photometric criteria. Using the observed luminosity correlation between restframe 2-10 keV ($L_{\text{X}}$) and restframe AGN 6 $\mu{\text{m}}$ ($L_{\text{MIR}}$), we estimate the intrinsic X-ray luminosities of our sample sources and combine these data with flux limits from X-ray catalogs to determine lower limits on nuclear obscuration. Using the ratio of intrinsic-to-observed X-ray luminosity ($R_{L_{\text{X}}}$), we find a significant fraction of sources with column densities approaching $N_{\text{H}}>$ 10$^{\text{24}}$ cm$^{-{\text{2}}}$, suggesting that multiwavelength observations are necessary to account for the population of heavily obscured AGNs. We simulate the underlying $N_{\text{H}}$ distribution for the X-ray non-detected sources in our sample through survival analysis, and confirm the presence of AGN activity via X-ray stacking. The absence of high Eddington ratio, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in local ($z\lesssim0.1$) samples of moderate luminosity AGN has generally been explained to result from radiation pressure on the dusty gas governing the level of nuclear ($\lesssim10$pc) obscuration. However, very high accretion rates are routinely reported among obscured quasars at higher luminosities, and may require a different feedback mechanism. We compile constraints on obscuration and Eddington ratio for samples of X-ray, optical, infrared, and submm selected AGN at quasar luminosities. Whereas moderate luminosity, obscured AGN in the local universe have a range of lower Eddington ratios ($f_{\rm Edd} \sim 0.001-0.1$), the most luminous ($L_{\rm bol} \gtrsim 10^{46} $erg s$^{-1}$) IR/submm-bright, obscured quasars out to $z\sim3$ commonly have very high Eddington ratios ($f_{\rm Edd} \sim 0.1-1$). This apparent lack of radiation pressure feedback in luminous obscured quasars is likely coupled with AGN timescales, such that a higher fraction of luminous obscured quasars are seen due to the short timescale for which quasars are most luminous. Previous studies measuring the clustering of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) have based their measurements on single-dish detected sources, finding evidence for strong clustering. However, ALMA has revealed that, due to the coarse angular resolution of these instruments, single-dish sources can be comprised of multiple sources. This implies that the clustering inferred from single-dish surveys may be overestimated. Here, we measure the clustering of SMGs based on the ALESS survey, an ALMA follow-up of sources previously identified in the LABOCA ECDFS Submillimeter Survey (LESS). We present a method to measure the clustering of ALMA sources that have been previously identified using single-dish telescopes, based on forward modeling both the single-dish and the ALMA observations. The cosmic history of supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth is important for understanding galaxy evolution, reionization and the physics of accretion. Recent NuSTAR, Swift-BAT and \textit{Chandra} hard X-ray surveys have provided new constraints on the space density of heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Using the new X-ray luminosity function derived from these data, we here estimate the accretion efficiency of SMBHs and their contribution to reionization. We calculate the total ionizing radiation from active galactic nuclei (AGN) as a function of redshift, based on the X radiation and distribution of obscuring column density, converted to UV wavelengths. Limiting the luminosity function to unobscured AGN only, our results agree with current UV luminosity functions of unobscured AGN. For realistic assumptions about the escape fraction, the contribution of all AGN to cosmic reionization is $\sim4$ times lower than the galaxy contribution (23% at $z\sim6$). Our results also offer an observationally constrained prescription that can be used in simulations or models of galaxy evolution. To estimate the average efficiency with which supermassive black holes convert mass to light, we compare the total radiated energy, converted from X-ray light using a bolometric correction, to the most recent local black hole mass density. The most likely value, $\eta \sim 0.3-0.34$, approaches the theoretical limit for a maximally rotating Kerr black hole, $\eta=0.42$, implying that on average growing supermassive black holes are spinning rapidly., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 13 pages, 5 figures
