After primordial inflation, the universe may have experienced a prolonged reheating epoch, potentially leading to a phase of matter domination supported by the oscillating inflaton field. During such an epoch, perturbations in the inflaton virialize upon reentering the cosmological horizon, forming inflaton structures. If the primordial overdensities are sufficiently large, these structures collapse to form primordial black holes (PBHs). To occur at a significant rate, this process requires an enhanced primordial power spectrum (PPS) at small scales. The enhancement of the PPS, as well as the formation and tidal interaction of the primordial structures, will in turn source a stochastic gravitational wave background(SGWB) that could be detected by current and/or future gravitational wave detectors. In this paper, we study the SGWB arising from these different sources during slow-reheating, focusing on a PPS that satisfies the requirements necessary for the formation of PBHs with a mass of $M_{\rm PBH}\simeq 10^{21}$ and that constitute the entirety of dark matter in the universe., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. Conceptualizing a porous media as a network of conductors sets a compromise between the oversimplifying conceptualization of the media as a bundle of capillary tubes and the computationally expensive and unobtainable detailed description of the media's geometry needed for direct numerical simulations. These models are abundantly being used to evaluate single and multiphase flow characteristics. The different flow characteristics are valuable in evaluating phenomena that may or may not be relevant for different applications. Here, we evaluate how different information about the pore space affects the ability of the network model to evaluate different flow characteristics.

Diluted pore networks or networks that are obtained directly from image analysis are commonly used to evaluate flow through complex porous media. These networks are often subjected to singular points and regions, that is, isolated sub-networks that are not connecting the inlet and outlet. These regions impair the invertibility of the modified Laplacian matrix and affect the accuracy and robustness of pore network models. Searching and eliminating these singularities is commonly done by preconditioning or searching algorithms like breadth-first search or depth-first search. Here, we propose using singular value decomposition (SVD) to simultaneously solve for single-phase flow and locate isolated regions. We demonstrate the performance of the method for networks obtained from images of a partially saturated medium, and for diluted networks close to the percolation threshold.

Media classification and the construction of pore network models from binary images of porous media hinges on accurately characterizing the pore space. We present an efficient method for (i) locating critical points, that is, pore body and throat centers, and (ii) partitioning of the pore space using information on the curvature of the distance map (DM) of the binary image. Specifically, we use the local maxima and minima of the determinant map of the Hessian matrix of the DM to locate the center of pore bodies and throats. The locating step provides structural information on the pore system, such as pore body and throat size distributions and the mean coordination number. The partitioning step is based on the eigenvalues of the Hessian, rather than the DM, to characterize the pore space using either watershed or medial axis transforms. This strategy eliminates the common problem of saddle-induced over-partitioning shared by all traditional marker-based watershed methods and represents an efficient method to determine the skeleton of the pore space without the need for morphological reconstruction.

We present constraints on the Dark Scattering model through cosmic shear measurements from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), using an accelerated pipeline with novel emulators produced with $\tt{CosmoPower}$. Our main emulator, for the Dark Scattering non-linear matter power spectrum, is trained on predictions from the halo model reaction framework, previously validated against simulations. Additionally, we include the effects of baryonic feedback from $\tt{HMcode2016}$, whose contribution is also emulated. We analyse the complete set of statistics of KiDS-1000, namely Band Powers, COSEBIs and Correlation Functions, for Dark Scattering in two distinct cases. In the first case, taking into account only KiDS cosmic shear data, we constrain the amplitude of the dark energy - dark matter interaction to be $\vert A_{\rm ds} \vert \lesssim 20$ $\rm b/GeV$ at 68% C.L. Furthermore, we add information from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from Planck, along with baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) from 6dFGS, SDSS and BOSS, approximating a combined weak lensing + CMB + BAO analysis. From this combination, we constrain $A_{\rm ds} = 10.6^{+4.5}_{-7.3}$ $\rm b/GeV$ at 68% C.L. We confirm that with this estimated value of $A_{\rm ds}$ the interacting model considered in this work offers a promising alternative to solve the $S_8$ tension., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, and 1 appendix. In this paper we review the possible mechanisms for the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) during a slow-reheating period {in which the energy transfer of the inflaton field to standard model particles becomes effective at slow temperatures}, offering a comprehensive examination of the theoretical foundations and conditions required for each of formation channel. In particular, we focus on post-inflationary scenarios where there are no self-resonances and the reheating epoch can be described {by the inflaton evolving in} a quadratic-like potential. In the hydrodynamical interpretation of this field during the slow-reheating epoch, the gravitational collapse of primordial fluctuations is subject to conditions on their sphericity, limits on their spin, as well as a maximum velocity dispersion. We show how to account for all conditions and show that PBHs form with different masses depending on the collapse mechanism. Finally we show, through an example, how PBH production serves to probe both the physics after primordial inflation, as well as the primordial powerspectrum at the smallest scales., Comment: 8 figures. We study a generalization of the the Starobinsky model adding a term of the form $R^{2p}$ to the Einstien-Hilbert action. We take the power $p$ as a parameter of the model and explore the constraints from CMB plus BAO data through a Bayesian analysis, thus exploring a range of values for the exponent parameter. We incorporate a reheating phase to the model through the background matter content (equation of state) and the duration of this period (number of $e$-foldings of reheating). We find that incorporating information from reheating imposes constraints on cosmological quantities, more stringent than the case of no reheating when tested with the Planck+BAO data. The inferred value of the exponent parameter is statistically consistent with $p=1$, favoring the original Starobinsky potential. Moreover, we report tighter constraints on $p$ and the number of $e$-folds in comparison with previous works. The obtained values for other inflationary observational parameters, such as the scalar spectral index $n_s$ and the scalar amplitude of perturbations $A_s$, are consistent with prior measurements. Finally we present the alternative use of consistency relations in order to simplify the parameter space and test the generalized Starobinsky potential even more efficiently., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

The study of reheating in inflationary models is crucial for understanding the early universe and gaining insights into inflationary dynamics and parameters. The reheating temperature $T_{re}$ and the duration of the reheating phase, quantified by the number of $e$-folds $N_{re}$, have significant implications for particle production, thermalization, and the primordial power spectrum. The duration of reheating affects particle abundance, including dark matter, and shapes the primordial power spectrum and cosmic microwave background anisotropies. By combining cosmological observations and theoretical considerations, we can constrain both $T_{re}$ and $N_{re}$, which in turn constrain the spectral index $n_s$, tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, and inflation model parameters. Utilizing consistency relations among observables, such as $n_s$ and $r$, provides additional constraints on inflationary models and determines bounds for other observables like the running of the scalar spectral index. These bounds are valuable for assessing the viability of models and can serve to specify priors in Bayesian analyses of specific models. As an example of how to proceed, we study in detail a particular case of a generalized $\alpha$-attractor model that accurately reproduces observed quantities. We study how the bounds on the abundance of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) and the constraints to the power spectrum (PS) are modified if a non-standard evolution phase takes place between the end of inflation and the Standard Big Bang (SBB). The constraints on PBH abundance and PS are computed using the new, freely available, PBHBeta library, which accounts for the effects of non-standard expansion and specific criteria for PBH formation. As working examples, we consider three different scenarios: a pure matter-dominated (MD) phase, a scalar field-dominated (SFD) universe, and a stiff fluid-dominated (SD) scenario. While the background expansion is the same for the MD and SFD scenarios, the PBH formation criteria lead to different constraints to the PS. Additionally, the duration of the non-standard expansion phase alters the bounds, with longer MD periods resulting in weaker constraints on the PS, and longer SD scenarios leading to an enhanced abundance due to the dust-like redshifting of PBHs. This paper focuses on the Starobinsky model of inflation. We derive solutions for various cosmological observables, such as the scalar spectral index $n_s$, the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and their runnings, as well as the number of $e$-folds of inflation, reheating, and radiation with minimal assumptions. We establish an equation that connects inflation and reheating, which can be solved for the spectral index $n_s$. Using consistency relations of the model, we determine the other observables, the number of $e$-folds during inflation $N_k$, and the number of $e$-folds during reheating $N_{re}$. The impact of reheating on inflation is explored by constraining the equation of state parameter $\omega_{re}$ at the end of reheating. We find remarkable agreement between the Starobinsky model and current measurements of the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations and the present bounds on the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, 1 table. Chemically peculiar Ap and Bp stars host strong large-scale magnetic fields in the range of $200$~G up to $30$~kG, which are often considered to be the origin of fossil magnetic fields. We assess the evolution of such fossil fields during the star formation process and the pre-main sequence evolution of intermediate stars, considering fully convective models, models including a transition to a radiative protostar and models with a radiative core. We also examine the implications of the interaction between the fossil field and the core dynamo. We employ analytic and semi-analytic calculations combined with current observational constraints. For fully convective models, we show that magnetic field decay via convection can be expected to be very efficient for realistic parameters of turbulent resistivities. Based on the observed magnetic field strength - density relation, as well as the expected amount of flux loss due to ambipolar diffusion, it appears unlikely that convection could be suppressed via strong enough magnetic fields. On the other hand, a transition from a convective to a radiative core could very naturally explain the survival of a significant amount of flux, along with the presence of a critical mass. We show that in some cases, the interaction of a fossil field with a core dynamo may further lead to changes in the surface magnetic field structure. In the future, it will be important to understand in more detail how the accretion rate evolves as a function of time during the formation of intermediate-mass protostars, including its impact on the protostellar structure. We present numerical solutions to Einstein's equations describing large spherical cosmic voids constituted by two components; dark matter and baryons, with a non-vanishing initial relative velocity, in an asymptotically homogeneous background compatible with the $\Lambda$CDM concordance model. We compute numerically the evolution of such configurations in the dark matter frame, with a hypothetical homogeneous distribution of baryons, but respecting the values dictated by the concordance model for the average baryon-to-dark matter density ratio. We reproduce the well known formation of overdensities at the edge of the void, and recover the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi solutions in the comoving limit of our simulations. We compute the average growth factor of matter fluctuations, and find that it departs significantly from the linear perturbative prescription even in the comoving case, where the non-linearity of inhomogeneities has an impact., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 2 appendices

If, after primordial inflation, the universe undergoes a relatively long reheating period, it could present a phase of matter domination supported by the oscillating inflaton field. During this epoch, small perturbations from the inflaton that reenter the cosmological horizon could virialize to form \textit{inflaton} structures. If the primordial overdensities are large enough, their associated inflaton structures could collapse to form primordial black holes (PBHs) [L.E.Padilla, J.C.Hidalgo and K.A.Malik, Phys.Rev.D, vol.106, p.023519, Jul 2022; hereinafter P1]. We perform a Bayesian study of a generalization of the basic $\alpha$-attractor T model given by the potential $V(\phi)=V_0\left[1-\text{sech}^{p}\left(\phi/\sqrt{6\alpha}M_{pl}\right)\right]$ where $\phi$ is the inflaton field and the parameter $\alpha$ corresponds to the inverse curvature of the scalar manifold in the conformal or superconformal realizations of the attractor models. Such generalization is characterized by the power $p$ which includes the basic or base model for $p=2$. Once the priors for the parameters of the $\alpha$-attractor potential are set by numerical exploration, we perform the corresponding statistical analysis for the cases $p=1\, , 2\, , 3\, ,4$, and derive posteriors. Considering the original $\alpha$-attractor potential as the base model, we calculate the evidence for our generalization, and conclude that the $p=4$ model is preferred by the CMB data. We also present constraints for the parameter $\alpha$. We present a flexible scalable open-source computational framework, named SECUReFoam, based on the finite-volume library OpenFOAM(R), for flow and transport problems in highly heterogeneous geological media and other porous materials. The framework combines geostatistical pre- and post-processing tools with specialised Partial Differential Equations solvers. Random fields, for permeability and other physical properties, are generated by means of continuous or thresholded Gaussian random fields with various covariance/variogram functions. The generation process is based on an explicit spectral Fourier decomposition of the field which, although more computationally intensive than Fast Fourier Transform methods, allows a more flexible choice of statistical parameters and can be used for general geometries and grids. Flow and transport equations are solved for single-phase and variable density problems, with and without the Boussinesq approximation, and for a wide range of density, viscosity, and dispersion models, including dual-continuum (dual permeability or dual porosity) formulations. The mathematical models are here presented in details and the numerical strategies to deal with heterogeneities, equation coupling, and boundary conditions are discussed and benchmarked for the heterogeneous Henry and Horton-Rodgers-Lapwood problems, and other test cases. We show that our framework is capable of dealing with large permeability variances, viscous instabilities, and large-scale three-dimensional transport problems.

At times prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the universe could show a primordial structure formation period if dominated by a fast oscillating inflaton field during reheating. In this context, we have postulated a new mechanism of primordial black hole formation [L. E. Padilla, J. C. Hidalgo, and K. A. Malik, Phys. Rev. D, vol. 106, p. 023519, Jul 2022], that draws the analogy between an extended reheating era and the scalar field dark matter model, stipulating the gravitational collapse of inflaton halos and inflaton stars. In this paper we look at the requirements for the realization of this new mechanism. We show that a generic primordial power spectrum with a peak at small scales is most suitable for the production of a considerable number of PBHs. When such requirement is met, and if reheating lasts long enough, large populations of PBHs with $M_{\rm PBH}\sim 1~\mathrm{gram}$ may be produced. We find in particular, that the mass fraction of PBHs is orders of magnitude larger than that obtained when PBHs form via direct collapse in a universe dominated by radiation or pressure-less dust. Looking at observable implications of our findings, we explore the possibility that the PBHs component may dominate the energy density of the universe at some point after the end of reheating., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. We study the merger history of primordial black holes (PBHs) in a scenario where they represent the dominant dark matter component of a typical dwarf galaxies' core. We investigate the possibility of a sequence of collisions resulting in a hierarchical merger of black holes and look at the final mass spectrum in such {\it clusters}, which initially present a monochromatic (single-mass) PBH population. Our study shows that the merging process results in the transfer of about $40\%$ of the total mass of the core to the merger products regardless of the initial mass of PBHs, with about $5\%$ of energy radiated out in the form of gravitational waves. Gravitational entropy is an elusive concept. Various theoretical proposals have been presented, initially based on Penrose's Weyl Curvature Hypothesis, and variations of it. A more recent proposal by Clifton, Ellis, and Tavakol (CET) considered a novel approach by defining such entropy from a Gibbs equation constructed from an effective stress-energy tensor that emerges from the 'square root' algebraic decomposition of the Bel-Robinson tensor, the simplest divergence-less tensor related to the Weyl tensor. Since, so far all gravitational entropy proposals have been applied to highly restrictive and symmetric spacetimes, we probe in this paper the CET proposal for a class of much less idealized spactimes (the Szekeres class I models) capable of describing the joint evolution of arrays of arbitrary number of structures: overdensities and voids, all placed on selected spatial locations in an asymptotic $\Lambda$CDM backgound. By using suitable covariant variables and their fluctuations, we find the necessary and sufficient conditions for a positive CET entropy production to be a negative sign of the product of the density and Hubble expansion fluctuations. To examine the viability of this theoretical result we examine numerically the CET entropy production for two elongated over dense regions surrounding a central spheroidal void, all evolving jointly from initial linear perturbations at the last scattering era into present day Mpc-size CDM structures. We show that CET entropy production is positive for all times after last scattering at the precise spatial locations where structure growth occurs and where the exact density growing mode is dominant. The present paper provides the least idealized (and most physically robust) probe of a gravitational entropy proposal in the context of structure formation.

Understanding nonlinear structure formation is crucial for fully exploring the data generated by stage IV surveys, requiring accurate modelling of the power spectrum. This is challenging for deviations from $\Lambda$CDM, but we must ensure that alternatives are well tested, to avoid false detections. We present an extension of the halo model reaction framework for interacting dark energy. We modify the halo model including the additional force present in the Dark Scattering model and implement it into ReACT. The reaction is combined with a pseudo spectrum from EuclidEmulator2 and compared to N-body simulations. Using standard mass function and concentration-mass relation, we find predictions to be 1 % accurate at $z=0$ up to $k=0.8~h/{\rm Mpc}$ for the largest interaction strength tested ($\xi=50$ b/GeV), improving to $2~h/{\rm Mpc}$ at $z=1$. For smaller interaction strength ($10$ b/GeV), we find 1 % agreement at $z=1$ up to scales above $3.5~h/{\rm Mpc}$, being close to $1~h/{\rm Mpc}$ at $z=0$. Finally, we improve our predictions with the inclusion of baryonic feedback and massive neutrinos and study degeneracies between the effects of these contributions and those of the interaction. Limiting the scales to where our modelling is 1 % accurate, we find a degeneracy between the interaction and feedback, but not with massive neutrinos. We expect the degeneracy with feedback to be resolvable by including smaller scales. The Reheating process at the end of inflation is often modeled by an oscillating scalar field which shows a background dust-like behaviour, prompting the analysis of gravitational collapse and black hole formation in this era to be approached by the spherical collapse of standard structure formation. In the scalar field dark matter structure formation process virialized halos halt the direct collapse, resulting in halos with condensed central cores at the de Broglie scale of the dominant scalar field. We show that a similar process can take place during reheating, leading to the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs). We study the formation of PBHs through the gravitational further collapse of structures virialized during reheating, looking at the collapse of either the whole structure, or that of the central core within these configurations. We compute the threshold amplitude for the density contrast to undergo this process, for both free and self-interacting scalar fields. We present a method to implement relativistic corrections to the evolution of dark matter structures in Newtonian simulations of a LCDM universe via the initial conditions. We take the nonlinear correspondence between the Lagrangian (Newtonian) evolution of dark matter inhomogeneities and the synchronous-comoving (relativistic) matter density description, and use it to promote the relativistic constraint as the initial condition for numerical simulations of structure formation. In this case, the incorporation of Primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) contributions as initial conditions is straightforward. We implement the relativistic,fNL and gNLcontributions as initial conditions for the L-PICOLA code, and compute the power spectrum and bispectrum of the evolved matter field. We focus specifically on the case of largest values of non-Gaussianity allowed at 1-sigma by Planck observations(fNL=-4.2 and gNL=-7000). As a checkup, we show consistency with the one-loop perturbative prescription and with a fully relativistic simulation (GRAMSES) on the adequate scales. Our results confirm that both relativistic and PNG features are most prominent at very large scales and for squeezed triangulations. We compute the real space galaxy power spectrum, including the leading order effects of General Relativity and primordial non-Gaussianity from the $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ and $g_{\mathrm{NL}}$ parameters. Such contributions come from the one-loop matter power spectrum terms dominant at large scales, and from the factors of the non-linear bias parameter $b_{\mathrm{NL}}$ (akin to the Newtonian $b_{\phi}$). We assess the detectability of these contributions in Stage-IV surveys. We study the evolution of nonlinear superhorizon perturbations in a universe dominated by a complex scalar field. The analysis is performed adopting the gradient expansion approach, in the constant mean curvature slicing. We derive general solutions valid to second order in the ratio $H^{-1}/L$ for scalar field inhomogeneities of size $L$ subject to an arbitrary canonical potential. We study perturbations of a complex scalar field during reheating with no self-interaction in the regime $ \mu \gg H$, when the scalar field has a fast oscillatory behaviour (close to a pressure-less fluid). We focus on the precise determination of the instability scale and find it differs from that associated with a real scalar field. We further look at the probability that unstable fluctuations form Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) obtaining a significant production of tiny PBHs which quickly evaporate and may subsequently leave a population of Planck-mass relics. We finally impose restrictions on the duration and energy scale of the fast oscillations period by considering that such relics constitute, at most, the totality of dark matter in the Universe., Comment: 7 figures, 16 pages + 2 appendices. The galaxy number density is a key quantity to compare theoretical predictions to the observational data from current and future Large Scale Structure surveys. The precision demanded by these Stage IV surveys requires the use of second order cosmological perturbation theory. Based on the independent calculation published previously, we present the result of the comparison with the results of three other groups at leading order. Overall we find that the differences between the different approaches lie mostly on the definition of certain quantities, where the ambiguity of signs results in the addition of extra terms at second order in perturbation theory., Comment: V2: 10 pages. Advective trapping occurs when solute enters low velocity zones in heterogeneous porous media. Classical local modeling approaches combine the impact of slow advection and diffusion into a hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient and many temporally non-local approaches lump these mechanisms into a single memory function. This joint treatment makes parameterization difficult and thus prediction of large scale transport a challenge. Here we investigate the mechanisms of advective trapping and their impact on transport in media composed of a high conductivity background and isolated low permeability inclusions. Breakthrough curves show that effective transport changes from a streamtube-like behavior to genuine random trapping as the degree of disorder of the inclusion arrangement increases. We upscale this behavior using a Lagrangian view point, in which idealized solute particles transition over a fixed distance at random advection times combined with Poissonian advective trapping events. We discuss the mathematical formulation of the upscaled model in the continuous time random walk and mobile-immobile mass transfer frameworks, and derive a model for large scale solute non-Fickian dispersion. These findings give new insight into transport in highly heterogeneous media.

We present a sample of 74 Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) from the Fermi-GBM catalogue for which we compute the distance moduli and use them to constrain effective dark energy models. To overcome the circularity problem affecting GRBs as distance indicators, we calibrate the Amati relation of our sample with a cosmology-independent technique. Specifically, we use the latest observational Hubble parameter data, including associated systematics, to approximate the cosmic expansion through a Bezier parametric curve. We subsequently obtain the distance moduli of the GRBs and include the data in a suite of recent cosmological observations of the expansion history (Planck Compressed 2018, 2012 BOSS release of BAO data and Pantheon SNIa), to compute Bayesian posterior constraints for the standard cosmological model $\Lambda$CDM, as well as $\omega$CDM, and the CPL parametrization. Throughout the analysis we strive to keep under control the error propagation and limit our GRBs sample to avoid observational bias. As a result, we find no evidence in favour of the alternatives to $\Lambda$CDM model.
