In this paper we study Lorentz-Violation(LV) effects on the thermodynamics properties of a real scalar field theory due to the presence of a constant background tensor field. In particular, we analyse and compute explicitly the deviations of the internal energy, pressure, and entropy of the system at thermal equilibrium due to the LV contributions. For the free massless scalar field we obtain exact results, whereas for the massive case we perform approximated calculations. Finally, we consider the self interacting $\phi^4$ theory, and perform perturbative expansions in the coupling constant for obtaining relevant thermodynamics quantities., Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure

We develop an alternative derivation of the renormalized expression for the one-loop soliton quantum mass corrections in (1+1)-dimensional scalar field theories. We regularize implicitly such quantity by subtracting and adding its corresponding tadpole graph contribution and use the renormalization prescription that such added term vanishes with adequate counterterms. As a result, we get a finite unambiguous formula for the soliton quantum mass corrections up to one-loop order, which turns to be independent of the chosen regularization scheme., Comment: 9 pages. We consider a complete study of the influence of the cavity size on the spontaneous decay of an atom excited state, roughly approximated by a harmonic oscillator. We confine the oscillator-field system in a spherical cavity of radius $R$, perfectly reflective, and work in the formalism of dressed coordinates and states, which allows to perform non-perturbative calculations for the probability of the atom to decay spontaneously from the first excited state to the ground state. In free space, $R\to\infty$, we obtain known exact results an for sufficiently small $R$ we have developed a power expansion calculation in this parameter. Furthermore, for arbitrary cavity size radius, we developed numerical computations and showed complete agreement with the exact one for $R\to\infty$ and the power expansion results for small cavities, in this way showing the robustness of our results. We have found that in general the spontaneous decay of an excited state of the atom increases with the cavity size radius and vice versa. For sufficiently small cavities the atom practically does not suffers spontaneous decay, whereas for large cavities the spontaneous decay approaches the free-space $R\to\infty$ value. On the other hand, for some particular values of the cavity radius, in which the cavity is in resonance with the natural frequency of the atom, the spontaneous decay transition probability is increased compared to the free-space case. Finally, we showed how the probability spontaneous decay go from an oscillatory time behaviour, for finite cavity radius, to an almost exponential decay, for free space., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We consider one loop quantum corrections to soliton mass for the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric extension of the (1+1)-dimensional scalar field theory with the potential $U(\phi) = \phi^2 \cos^2\left(\ln \phi^2\right)$. First, we compute the one loop quantum soliton mass correction of the bosonic sector. To do that, we regularize implicitly such quantity by subtracting and adding its corresponding tadpole graph contribution, and use the renormalization prescription that the added term vanishes with the corresponding counterterms. As a result we get a finite unambiguous formula for the soliton quantum mass corrections up to one loop order. Afterwards, the computation for the supersymmetric case is extended straightforwardly and we obtain for the one loop quantum correction of the SUSY kink mass the expected value previously derived for the SUSY sine-Gordon and $\phi^4$ models. However, we also have found that for a particular value of the parameters, contrary to what was expected, the introduction of supersymmetry in this model worsens ultraviolet divergences rather than improving them., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures; Major modifications included to match version published in JHEP

In this paper, new electrically charged asymptotically flat black hole solutions are numerically derived in the context of higher derivative gravity. These solutions can be interpreted as generalizations of two different classes of non-charged asymptotically flat spacetimes: Schwarzschild and non-Schwarzschild solutions. We investigate the variation of the oscillation frequency of the Mg$^{2+}$ and O$^{2-}$ ions in the magnesium oxide lattice due to the interactions of the surface with water monolayers by means of Low Energy Electron Diffraction. Our key result is a new technique to determine the adsorbate vibrations produced by the water monolayers on the surface lattice as a consequence of their change in the surface Debye temperature and its chemical shift. The latter was systematically investigated for different annealing times and for a constant external thermal perturbation in the range of 110-300 K in order to accomplish adsorption or desorption of water monolayers in the surface lattice., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We study the dynamical entanglement of two identical atoms interacting with a quantum field. As a simplified model for this physical system we consider two harmonic oscillators linearly coupled to a massless scalar field in the dressed coordinates and states approach and enclose the whole system inside a spherical cavity of radius R. Through a quantity called concurrence, the entanglement evolution for the two-atom system will be discussed, for a range of initial states composed of a superposition of atomic states. Our results reveals how the concurrence of the two atoms behaves through the time evolution, for arbitrary cavity size and for arbitrary coupling constant, weak, intermediate or strong. All our computations are exact and only the final step is numerical. These numerical solutions give us fascinating results for the concurrence, such as quasi-random fluctuations, with a resemblance of periodicity. Another interesting result we found is when the system is initially maximally entangled (disentangled), after the time t = 2R, the system becomes again strongly entangled (disentangled) particularly during the first oscillations, later this phenomenon could be wrecked depending on the initial condition. In this paper we study the ultraviolet and infrared behaviour of the self energy of a point-like charge in the vector and scalar Lee-Wick electrodynamics in a $d+1$ dimensional space time. It is shown that in the vector case, the self energy is strictly ultraviolet finite up to $d=3$ spatial dimensions, finite in the renormalized sense for any $d$ odd, infrared divergent for $d=2$ and ultraviolet divergent for $d>2$ even. On the other hand, in the scalar case, the self energy is striclty finite for $d\leq 3$, and finite, in the renormalized sense, for any $d$ odd., Comment: 5 latex pages

We investigate some peculiar aspects of the so called Lee-Wick Electrodynamics focusing on physical effects produced by the presence of sources for the vector field. The interactions between stationary charges distributions along parallel branes with arbitrary dimensions is investigated and the energy of a point charge is discussed. Some physical phenomena produced in the vicinity of a Dirac string are also investigated. We consider a particle in the harmonic approximation coupled linearly to an environment. modeled by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators. The system (particle--environment) is considered in a cavity at thermal equilibrium. We employ the recently introduced notion of renormalized coordinates to investigate the time evolution of the particle occupation number. For comparison we first present this study in bare coordinates. For a long ellapsed time, in both approaches, the occupation number of the particle becomes independent of its initial value. The value of ocupation number of the particle is the physically expected one at the given temperature. So we have a Markovian process, describing the particle thermalization with the environment. In this paper we investigate the vacuum energies of several models of quantum fields interacting with static external currents (linear couplings) concentrated along parallel branes with an arbitrary number of codimensions. We show that we can simulate the presence of static charges distributions as well as the presence of classical static dipoles in any dimension for massive and massless fields. We also show that we can produce confining potentials with massless self interacting scalar fields as well as long range anisotropic potentials., Comment: 18 latex pages

Using the formalism of {\it renormalized} coordinates and \textit{dressed} states introduced in previous publications, we perform a nonperturbative study of the time evolution of a superposition of two states, the ground state and the first excited level of a harmonic oscillator, the system being confined in a perfectly reflecting cavity of radius $R$. For $R\to\infty$, we find dissipation with dominance of the interference terms of the density matrix, in both weak- and strong-coupling regimes. For small values of $R$ all elements of the density matrix present an oscillatory behavior as times goes on and the system is not dissipative. We study the time evolution of an atom suddenly coupled to a thermal radiation field. As a simplified model of the atom-electromagnetic field system we use a system composed by a harmonic oscillator linearly coupled to a scalar field in the framework of the recently introduced dressed coordinates and dressed states. We show that the time evolution of the thermal expectation values for the occupation number operators depend exclusively on the probabilities associated with the emission and absorption of field quanta. In particular, the time evolution of the number operator associated with the atom is given in terms of the probability of remaining in the first excited state and the decay probabilities from this state by emission of field quanta of frequencies $\omega_k$. Also, it is showed that independent of the initial state of the atom, it thermalizes with the thermal radiation field in a time scale of the order of the inverse coupling constant., Comment: 12 pages, LaTex

We study the $\frac{\lambda}{4!}\phi^{4}$ massless scalar field theory in a four-dimensional Euclidean space, where all but one of the coordinates are unbounded. We are considering Dirichlet boundary conditions in two hyperplanes, breaking the translation invariance of the system. We show how to implement the perturbative renormalization up to two-loop level of the theory. First, analyzing the full two and four-point functions at the one-loop level, we shown that the bulk counterterms are sufficient to render the theory finite. Meanwhile, at the two-loop level, we have to introduce also surface counterterms in the bare lagrangian in order to make finite the full two and also four-point Schwinger functions., Comment: 14 pages, LaTex

In previous publications dressed coordinates and dressed states has been introduced. Specifically, a system composed by a harmonic oscillator interacting linearly with an infinity set of other oscillators has been treated. In this paper we show how to generalize such dressed coordinates and dressed states to a nonlinear version of this system. Also we clarify some misunderstandings about the concept of dressed coordinates. We consider the problem of an harmonic oscillator coupled to a scalar field in the framework of recently introduced dressed coordinates. We compute all the probabilities associated with the decay process of an excited level of the oscillator. Instead of doing direct quantum mechanical calculations we establish some sum rules from which we infer the probabilities associated to the different decay processes of the oscillator. We consider a system consisting of an atom in the dipole approximation, coupled to the electromagnetic field. Using recently introduced renormalized coordinates and dressed states, we give a non-perturbative solution to the atom radiation process. From this formalism a non-exponential decay law naturally emerges. We consider a system consisting of a particle in the harmonic approximation, having frequency $\bar{\omega}$, coupled to a scalar field inside a spherical reflecting cavity of diameter $L$. By introducing {\it dressed} coordinates we define {\it dressed} states which allow a non-perturbative unified description of the radiation process, for weak and strong coupling regimes. We perform a study of the energy distribution in a small cavity, with the initial condition that the particle is in the first excited state. In the {\it weak} coupling regime, we conclude for the quasi-stability of the excited particle. For instance, for a frequency $\bar{\omega}$ of the order $\bar{\omega}\sim 4.00\times 10^{14}/s$ (in the visible red), starting from the initial condition that the particle is in the first excited level, we find that for a cavity with diameter $L\sim 1.0\times 10^{-6}m$, the probability that the particle be at any time still in the first excited level, will be of the order of 97%. For appropriate cavity dimensions, which are of the same order of those ensuring stability for weak coupling, we ensure for strong coupling the complete decay of the particle to the ground state in a small ellapsed time. Also we consider briefly the effects of a quartic interaction up to first order in the interaction parameter $\lambda$. We obtain for a large cavity an explicit $\lambda$-dependent expression for the particle radiation process. I agree with the authors of hep-th/0211149 that the claim made in Phys.Lett. B542, 282 (2002) is incorrect and that the derivation of its main formula, although correct, contains two compensating errors. In this reply the main formula of Phys.Lett. The bare one loop soliton quantum mass corrections can be expressed in two ways: as a sum over the zero-point energies of small oscillations around the classical configuration, or equivalently as the (Euclidean) effective action per unit time. In order to regularize the bare one loop quantum corrections (expressed as the sum over the zero-point energies) we subtract and add from it the tadpole graph that appear in the expansion of the effective action per unit time. The subtraction renders the one loop quantum corrections finite. Next, we use the renormalization prescription that the added tadpole graph cancels with adequate counterterms, obtaining in this way a finite unambiguous expression for the one loop soliton quantum mass corrections. When we apply the method to the solitons of the sine-Gordon and phi^4 kink models we obtain results that agree with known results. Using the non-perturbative method of {\it dressed} states previously introduced in JPhysA, we study effects of the environment on a quantum mechanical system, in the case the environment is modeled by an ensemble of non interacting harmonic oscillators. This method allows to separate the whole system into the {\it dressed} mechanical system and the {\it dressed} environment, in terms of which an exact, non-perturbative approach is possible. When applied to the Brownian motion, we give explicit non-perturbative formulas for the classical path of the particle in the weak and strong coupling regimes. When applied to study atomic behaviours in cavities, the method accounts very precisely for experimentally observed inhibition of atomic decay in small cavities PhysLA, physics0111042.
