Abstract

The current study is a sequel study to explore and to examine Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beauv) as a healthy food. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potency of Foxtail Millet grown under sub optimum condition and possibility of improving its genetic variation by inducing mutation for promoting its development in marginal lands. This paper provides information the tolerance of Setaria to sub optimum water conditions. Setaria seeds genotype of Gambir Manis were treated with Gamma ray with different levels i.e. 0 Gy, 25 Gy, 75 Gy, and 100 Gy and planted in a greenhouse condition. Prior to flowering phase, the plants were subjected to water shortage by reducing watering intervals i.e., every day, once every 2 days, 4 days and 6 days. Randomized Block Design was used in the experiment with four replications. Nutritional quality, crop growth and production were evaluated. The results suggested that nutritional quality of foxtail millet as food is considerably high and healthy. Radiation treatment of 25 Gy, 50 Gy and 75 Gy performed the best plant growth. Reduction in watering intervals up to 6 days did not significantly affect the plant growth. Combination of 25 Gy and watering every 2 day showed an optimum growth and production. It can be concluded that Foxtail millet can be promoted as a healthy and tolerant crop to water shortage. Abstract

Not only attractive as a model plant, foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv] is a nutritious cereal. S.italica is tolerant to dry land but is less adaptive to shaded environments. Expanding this cereal's planting area through an intercropping system is part of its conservation as underutilized cereal in Indonesia. Buru Kuning is one of the superior foxtail millet accessions from Maluku. The study aimed to improve Buru Kuning accession productivity in shade conditions through radiation. This study was arranged in a Nested Design. The main plot was the different levels of shading (full light, 55% shade, and 75% shade). The subplot was the dose of Gamma Rays (wildtype of Buru Kuning, 25 Gy, 50 Gy, 100 Gy, and 200 Gy). The results showed that shade conditions decreased plant growth and production compared to full light. The results revealed that dosage 25 Gy radiation effectively improves Buru Kuning accession tolerance to shade without loos its prominent characters. Mutant 25 Gy adapted better than wildtype to 55% reduced light intensity recommended for developing in the intercropping system cultivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: Mercury pollution is caused by artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) operations along the Cikaniki River (West Java, Indonesia). The atmosphere is one of the primary media through which mercury can disperse. In this study, atmospheric mercury levels are estimated using the native epiphytic fern Asplenium nidus complex (A. nidus) as a biomonitor; these estimates shed light on the atmospheric dispersion of mercury released during mining. Samples were collected from 8 sites along the Cikaniki Basin during September–November, 2008 and September–November, 2009. The A. nidus fronds that were attached to tree trunks 1–3m above the ground were collected and measured for total mercury concentration using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS) after acid-digestion. The atmospheric mercury was collected using porous gold collectors, and the concentrations were determined using double-amalgam CVAAS. The highest atmospheric mercury concentration, 1.8×103 ±1.6×103 ngm−3, was observed at the mining hot spot, and the lowest concentration of mercury, 5.6±2.0ngm−3, was observed at the remote site from the Cikaniki River in 2009. The mercury concentrations in A. nidus were higher at the mining village (5.4×103 ±1.6×103 ngg−1) than at the remote site (70±30ngg−1). The distribution of mercury in A. nidus was similar to that in the atmosphere; a significant correlation was observed between the mercury concentrations in the air and in A. nidus (r =0.895, P <0.001, n =14). The mercury levels in the atmosphere can be estimated from the mercury concentration in A. nidus using a regression equation: log (Hg A.nidu /ngg−1)=0.740 log (HgAir/ngm−3) − 1.324. Abstract

The 21st century is a century of knowledge where information is widely dispersed and technology evolves. In order for students to succeed in life and work, students need to master some skills, knowledge and skills. Based on the observations on the biochemical learning in IKIP Budi Utomo shows that the students are still passive during the learning process, so the generic skills of science students are less honed. Teachers need to use learning models that can stimulate science generic skills of students, one of which is Search, Solve, Create and Share (SSCS) model. SSCS model can be combined using video media. The purpose of this study is to explain the empowerment of students' science generic skill using the SSCS learning model. The research design used was quasi experiment with Pretest-Postest Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The independent variable is the learning model. The dependent variable is the science generic skill. Instrumen of this research is science generic skill's observation sheet. Hypothesis test using Kruskal Wallis with significance level 0,05 (P <0,05). The results showed that students' science generic skill can be empowered using the SSCS learning model. Abstract

The Vertical Axis Hydrokinetic Turbine -- Straight Blade Cascaded (VAHT-SBC) is a type of energy generation technology developed to meet the increasing demand for renewable energy. Previous studies have been carried out to enhance the efficiency of the turbine through several aspects. To deploy a turbine on site, a study on its power generation and conversion is needed. In this research, the VAHT-SBC was integrated with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) by a pulley and belt transmission system. This study was conducted by experimental and numerical analysis. The CFD simulation result showed that the highest torque of the turbine was found at 0° and 360°, with an average value of 23.923 Nm and with current velocity at 0.92 m/s. The experimental data showed that the voltage and frequency were proportional to the generator rotational speed and inversely correlated with the load given to the integration system. In the inverter, the voltage and frequency values were stable at 230 V and 56 Hz respectively. The VAHT-SBC prototype was able to produce a maximum power of 50 W on site, with a current velocity of 0.82 and 0.92 m/s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: The distribution of mercury in the soil, sediment and river water around the artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) area along the Cikaniki River, West Java, Indonesia, was investigated. The total mercury concentration (T-Hg) in the forest soil ranged from 0.11 to 7.0mgkg−1, and the highest value was observed at the ASGM village. In the vertical T-Hg profile around the villages, the highest value was observed at the soil surface, and the concentration decreased with depth. This result suggested that the mercury released by mining activity was dispersed through the atmosphere and deposited on the surface. The total organic carbon content (TOC) showed a similar vertical profile as the T-Hg, and a linear relationship was found between T-Hg and TOC. Mercury deposited on the surface can be absorbed by organic matter. The slope of the line was larger near the ASGM village, implying a higher rate of deposition of mercury. The T-Hg in the sediment ranged from 10 to 70mgkg−1, decreasing gradually toward the lower reaches of the river. Mining waste can be transported with the river flow and deposited along the river. The distribution of the mining waste can be determined using the mineralogical composition measured by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
