Abstract Identification of active sites in catalytic materials is important and helps establish approaches to the precise design of catalysts for achieving high reactivity. Generally, active sites of conventional heterogeneous catalysts can be single atom, nanoparticle or a metal/oxide interface. Herein, we report that metal/oxide reverse interfaces can also be active sites which are created from the coordinated migration of metal and oxide atoms. As an example, a Pd1/CeO2 single-atom catalyst prepared via atom trapping, which is otherwise inactive at 30 °C, is able to completely oxidize formaldehyde after steam treatment. The enhanced reactivity is due to the formation of a Ce2O3-Pd nanoparticle domain interface, which is generated by the migration of both Ce and Pd atoms on the atom-trapped Pd1/CeO2 catalyst during steam treatment. We show that the generation of metal oxide-metal interfaces can be achieved in other heterogeneous catalysts due to the coordinated mobility of metal and oxide atoms, demonstrating the formation of a new active interface when using metal single-atom material as catalyst precursor.

BackgroundThe Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the corresponding mitigation measures have had a discernible impact on drug utilization among outpatients. However, limited research exists on the prescription trends in the elderly population during the pandemic period in Viet Nam.ObjectivesThis study aims to analyze the effects of COVID-19 on outpatient drug utilization patterns at a national geriatric hospital in Ho Chi Minh City before and after the early onset of the pandemic.MethodsData was collected from the prescriptions and administration claims, encompassing the period from January 2016 to December 2022. The dataset was divided into two periods: Period 1: January 2016 to December 2020 and Period 2: January 2021 to December 2022. The drug utilization was measured using DDD/1000P (defined daily doses-DDD per 1000 prescriptions) on a monthly basis. The analysis employed interrupted time series using Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) to detect changes in drug use levels and rates.ResultsA total of 1,060,507 and 644,944 outpatient prescriptions from Thong Nhat Hospital were included in Period 1 and Period 2, respectively. The median age of the patients were 58 in Period 1 and 67 years old in Period 2. The most common comorbidities were dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. In terms of medication utilization, cardiovascular drugs were the most frequently prescribed, followed by drugs active on the digestive and hormonal systems. The study observed significant surges in the number of prescriptions and the average number of drugs per prescription. However, there were no significant changes in the overall consumption of all drugs. Among the drug groups related to the cardiovascular system, three subgroups experienced a sudden and significant increase: cardiac therapy, beta-blocking agents, and antihypertensives, with increasing consumption levels of 1,177.73 [CI 95%: 79.29; 2,276.16], 73.32 [CI 95%: 28.18; 118.46], and 36.70 [CI 95%: 6.74; 66.66] DDD/1000P, respectively. On the other hand, there was a significant monthly decrease of -31.36 [CI 95%: -57.02; -5.70] DDD/1000P in the consumption of anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic products. Interestingly, there was a significant increase of 74.62 [CI 95%: -0.36; 149.60] DDD/1000P in the use of antigout preparations.ConclusionCOVID-19 resulted in a sudden, non-significant increase in overall drug consumption levels among outpatients. Notably, our findings highlight significant increases in the utilization of three drug groups related to the cardiovascular system, specifically cardiac therapy, beta-blocking agents, and antihypertensives. Intriguingly, there was a statistically significant increase in the consumption of antigout preparations, despite a decline in the monthly consumption rate of non-steroidal anti-flammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Further studies in the following years are necessary to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on outpatient drug utilization patterns.

Among the slope hazards caused by rainfall, not all of them occur directly during storm washout, and the wetting–drying cycles’ effect on the rainfall–evaporation process is an important cause of shallow slope instability. In this study, taking the slope of the open-pit coal mine dumps in Cam Pha, in the Quang Ninh region of Vietnam, as the research object, we carry out experiments on the physical properties of the rock body under different wetting–drying cycles, as well as numerical analyses. The results show that the wetting–drying cycles significantly affect the physical and mechanical parameters and permeability of the rock body. In the process of the wetting–drying cycle, a transient saturated zone occurs on the surface of the slope, and the range of the unsaturated zone inside the slope body decreases with the increase in the number of wetting–drying cycles. Moreover, the infiltration line keeps moving downward, but the rate of downward movement is slowed down by the decrease in the gradient of matrix suction affected by rainfall. Under the influence of the wetting–drying cycles, the slope displacement, plastic zone, and maximum shear strain increment range gradually approach the slope surface with the wetting–drying cycles, and the displacement peak gradually increases. A dump is a site for the centralized discharge of mining waste, formed by the crushing and stockpiling of the original rock formation. Bang Nau is the name of the dump considered in this study. After multiple rainfall events, the slope stability under five wetting–drying cycles decreases from 1.721 to 1.055, and the landslide mode changes from a whole landslide to a single-step shallow landslide, with a certain landslide risk. It is necessary to strengthen the slope stability as the landslide risk is very high, and it is necessary to strengthen the monitoring and inspection of the slope.

Free-space laser communication (lasercom), a great application of using free-space optics (FSO) for satellite communication, has been gaining significant attraction. However, despite of great potential of lasercom, its performance is limited by the adverse effects of atmospheric turbulence and cloud attenuation, which directly affect the quality and availability of lasercom links. The paper, therefore, concentrates on evaluating the cloud attenuation in the FSO downlinks between satellite and ground stations in tropical regions. The meteorological ERA-Interim database provided by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) from 2015 to 2020 is used to get the cloud database in several areas in tropical regions. This study proposed a novel probability density function of cloud attenuation, which is validated by using a well-known curve-fitting method. Moreover, we derive a closed-form of satellite-based FSO link availability by applying the site diversity technique to improve the system performance. Numerical results, which demonstrate the urgency of the paper, reveal that the impact of clouds on tropical regions is more severe than in temperate regions.

In this study, the focus was on isolating and characterizing the fungal strain Beauveria bassiana from muscardine-infected silkworms (Bombyx mori L.). The fungal strain isolated from the muscardine-infected silkworm, designated as GA, closely resembled Beauveria bassiana isolate SBI-Bb04 based on morphological analysis and comparison of the 18S rRNA nucleotide sequence with sequences in the NCBI database. Beauveria bassiana GA demonstrates the ability to grow on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) medium. Optimal conditions for its growth were determined to be a pH range of 6-7 and a temperature range of 20-25°C. The composition of SDA, containing glucose and peptone sources, was found to be ideal for both growth and sporulation of this fungal strain. Furthermore, Beauveria bassiana GA exhibits the capacity to synthesize various extracellular enzymes, including chitinase, protease, cellulase, and amylase. These enzymatic activities contribute to its pathogenicity and suggest its potential as a biocontrol agent against insect pests.

Air pollution is a growing environmental problem worldwide. Compelling epidemiological evidence shows that people spend more than 80% of their time indoors, and extensive studies have shown that indoor air pollution has an equal or greater impact on health when compared. with the surrounding environment. This article determines that the level of indoor fine dust pollution with PM2.5 and PM10 is quite high and changes over the seasons. Winter has the highest concentration, specifically PM2.5 accounting for 54g/m3, PM10 accounting for 97g/m3. The model for treating indoor dust with negative ions initially showed positive results with an efficiency of 70-84.8% at a device height of 75cm. This is the basis for further detailed research on fine dust treatment with negative ions.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria have immense potential to be used as an environmentally friendly replacement for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, through the production of various plant growth-promoting substances. The objectives of this study were the isolation, characterization, and identification of indole acetic acid-producing bacteria from the rhizospheric soil of paddy rice. Out of all screened isolates, isolate 1.4 was the highest IAA producer with 29.76 µg/mL. The culture medium conditions to obtain the highest IAA production were optimized as follows: the culture temperature was 30°C, the incubation time was three days, and the pH was 7.0. The 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate 1.4 has been genetically identified as Bacillus altitudinis, and it can potentially be used as an efficient biofertilizer.

Background/purpose: Acemannan is an osteoinductive material. This study's objective was to compare the outcomes of bone defect healing using 3-dimensional images after apical surgery with or without adding acemannan sponges. Materials and methods: Twenty-two anterior teeth from 9 males and 13 females requiring apical surgery were included in this randomized controlled trial. Post-surgery, the bone defects were randomly divided into three groups: blood clot control, 5-, or 10-mg acemannan sponge groups. CBCT scans were taken immediately (baseline), 3-, 6-, and 12-month post-surgery. Sagittal serial sections (1 mm thick slices parallel to the long axis of the tooth) of the defect image were created. The defect boundary was located and the total bone defect volume (BDV) was calculated from the sum of the volume of the serial defect sections. The bone healing was assessed by the percentage of total bone defect volume reduction (%ΔBDV). The paired t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the differences within each group and between groups, respectively. Results: The baseline mean BDV of the control, 5-, and 10-mg acemannan groups were not significantly different (p > 0.05). After treatment, the mean BDV for each group was reduced in a time-dependent manner. Complications associated with insulin treatment for hyperkalemia are serious and common. We hypothesize that, in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD), giving 5 units instead of 10 units of i.v. regular insulin may reduce the risk of causing hypoglycemia when treating hyperkalemia. Methods: A retrospective quality improvement study on hyperkalemia management (K+ ≥ 6 mEq/l) from June 2013 through December 2013 was conducted at an urban emergency department center. Electronic medical records were reviewed, and data were extracted on presentation, management of hyperkalemia, incidence and timing of hypoglycemia, and whether treatment was ordered as a protocol through computerized physician order entry (CPOE). We evaluated whether an educational effort to encourage the use of a protocol through CPOE that suggests the use of 5 units might be beneficial for CKD/ESRD patients. A second audit of hyperkalemia management from July 2015 through January 2016 was conducted to assess the effects of intervention on hypoglycemia incidence. Results: Treatments ordered using a protocol for hyperkalemia increased following the educational intervention (58 of 78 patients [74%] vs. 62 of 99 patients [62%]), and the number of CKD/ESRD patients prescribed 5 units of insulin as per protocol increased (30 of 32 patients [93%] vs. 32 of 43 [75%], P = .03). Associated with this, the incidence of hypoglycemia associated with insulin treatment was lower (7 of 63 patients [11%] vs. 22 of 76 patients [28%], P = .03), and there were no cases of severe hypoglycemia compared to the 3 cases before the intervention. Conclusion: Education on the use of a protocol for hyperkalemia resulted in a reduction in the number of patients with severe hypoglycemia associated with insulin treatment.

This work aimed to study the effect of a microfibrillated cellulose additive on strength, elastic modulus, heat release, and shrinkage of mortar and concrete. The dosage of the additive varies from 0.4 to 4.5% by weight of the cement. The change in strength with an increase in the dosage of the additive occurred in a wave-like manner. The uneven character of the change in the results also took place in the determination of heat release and shrinkage. In general, heat release and shrinkage decreased at increasing additive dosage. The additive showed the greatest decrease in the heat release of concrete at a content of 2%. The heat release of concrete practically differed little from the exotherm of the standard at an additive content of 1 and 1.5%. The addition of microfibrillated cellulose additive in small (0.5%) and large (1.5%) amounts reduced shrinkage compared to the reference, and at an intermediate content (1%), the shrinkage was higher than in the reference specimens. In this case, the water evaporation rate from concrete increased with an increase in the additive. With an increase in the additive dosage, the modulus of elasticity decreases. Thus, the microfibrillated cellulose additive provides concrete with lower values of the modulus of elasticity, heat release, and shrinkage, and the additive is recommended for use in concretes with increased crack resistance during the hardening period. The recommended additive content is 0.5% by weight of cement. At the specified dosage, it is possible to provide the class of concrete in terms of compressive strength C35/45.

Summary:. Hibernoma is considered as a rare soft tissue benign tumor originating from brown fat. Few cases have been described so far in the literature; hibernoma was first described by Merkel in 1906, but it was named by Gery in 1914. We present the case of 33-year-old woman who presented with a palpable lump over superior aspect of her thigh associated with pain. Magnetic resonance imaging examination reported a “dumbbell”-shaped soft tissue tumor involving the right side of the pelvis and adductor compartment passing through the obturator foramen into the adductor compartment infiltrating the hip joint. Clinical and imaging features initially suggested liposarcoma, but ultrasound-guided biopsy and final surgical resection yielded the diagnosis of hibernoma. This rare soft tissue tumor can imitate malignancy, but magnetic resonance imaging and possibly guided biopsy are essential for preoperative planning as surgical resection remains the best management pathway.

Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is a significant source of lower extremity pain and morbidity in the athletic population. Although endoscopic techniques have been introduced, open fasciotomy remains the mainstay of surgical treatment because of the paucity of evidence in support of an endoscopic approach. The literature on surgical management of CECS is mixed, and overall success rates are modest at best. Optimizing surgical technique, including prevention of neurovascular injury and wound complications, can make a significant impact on the clinical outcome. Here we present our surgical technique, including pearls and pitfalls, for open 4-compartment fasciotomy for treatment of chronic exertional compartment syndrome.

Hydrothermally stable carbon overlayers can protect mesoporous oxides (SiO2 and Al2O3) from hydrolysis during aqueous-phase catalysis. Overlayers made at 800 °C by pyrolysis of 2,3-naphthalenediol deposited out of acetone solution were analyzed by solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Power absorption due to sample conductivity was prevented by diluting the sample in nonconductive and background-free tricalcium phosphate. While pyrolysis on SiO2 produced a predominantly aromatic carbon film, at least 15% of nonaromatic carbon (sp3-hybridized C as well as C=O) was observed on γ-Al2O3. These species were not derived from residual solvent, according to spectra of the same material treated at 400 °C. The sp3-hybridized C exhibited weak couplings to hydrogen, short spin-lattice relaxation times, and unusually large shift anisotropies, which are characteristics of tetrahedral carbon with high concentrations of unpaired electrons. Moderate heat treatment at 400 °C on SiO2 and Al2O3 resulted in yellow-brown and nearly black samples, respectively, but the darker color on Al2O3 did not correspond to more extensive carbonization. Aromatic carbon bonded to hydrogen remained predominant and the peaks of naphthalenediol were still recognizable; however, some of the chemical shifts differed by up to 5 ppm, indicating significant differences in local structure. On SiO2, additional sharp peaks were detected and attributed to 1/3 of the 2,3-naphthalene molecules undergoing fast, nearly isotropic motions.

Drones have found extensive utility in both public and personal places. Consequently, the accurate detection and tracking of drones have emerged as pivotal endeavors in terms of ensuring their optimal performance. This research paper introduces a novel application for discerning the movements of humans and drones from cloud points through the utilization of frequency-modulated continuous wave radar. The dynamic density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (Dynamic-DBSCAN) algorithm was employed to classify cloud points into separate groups corresponding to the number of objects within the tracking area. Compared to the original DBSCAN algorithm, this method increased accuracy by about 16.8%, achieving an accuracy of up to 93.99%. Subsequently, a trio of deep learning algorithms--long short-term memory, deep neural network, and residual network (ResNet)--were harnessed to ascertain the categorization of each group as either human or drone. According to the results, ResNet achieved the best accuracy rate of 97.72%. Overall, this study underscores the efficacy of the proposed method in accurately and efficiently distinguishing between human and drone entities for effective monitoring and management.
