If localized knowledge spillovers are present in the university setting, higher rates of both start-up and/or survival would be observed in areas that are geographically proximate to the university. Using a detailed industry data set for Texas for 1999:3-2005:2, we analyze start-up and exit rates for high-tech firms. Based on a Poisson quasi-maximum likelihood estimation, we find evidence that the level of R&D and proximity of a research institution positively affects the likelihood of technology start-ups. However; using both the Cox proportional hazards model and Kaplan-Meier approach, our results suggest that geographic proximity to knowledge centers does not reduce hazard rates. An intensive investigation of China's high-tech sector led by a noted Hong Kongbased geographer examines the patterns of cooperation between firms and local governments (so-called 'state-firm strategic resonance') as an alternative to knowledge spillover in an effort to explain why certain firms are more likely to innovate than others within an economic cluster. As a case study, they select the integrated circuit design industry (a key in the development of more efficient computing and thus a critical element of the digital revolution) in Shanghai, one of the most advanced metropolitan regions in China. A systematic analysis of firm-level data obtained inter alia from the authors' 2008 survey and interviews revealed a significant pattern of variation in innovation that could not be explained by inter-firm interactions in the process of industrial clustering. The authors argue that the uneven pattern of technological innovation is contingent on a state-built institutional and market environment designed to stimulate firms' innovative activities, and demonstrate how firms respond to that environment in a Chinese metropolis. Among the many factors that encourage return patronage of incumbent technologies, one that has received scholarly attention in other contexts is switching costs. The existing literature, however, has yet to provide a detailed explication of the underlying processes involved to link switching costs and technology patronage. Furthermore, no examination has been conducted of the degree to which the factor plays a role in the success or failure of corporate technology advancement strategies designed to encourage technology patronage. In this context, we propose a systematic framework to explore the nature of the links between technology advancement strategies and consumer technology patronage via switching costs. Based on consumer survey data from South Korea. we find empirical support for the link between technology advancement strategies and consumers' technology commitment and patronage. Specifically, switching costs are found to be positively associated with technology commitment and patronage. Further, compatibility strategy is associated with the costs involved in switching away from incumbent technology because of an abundant or varied supply of complementary goods. The results also show that preannouncement is a key communication strategy to achieve favorable expectations and to retain the commitment and patronage of current technology users. However, the network perspective does not specify the role of networks in the emergence and early growth of a venture. We have distinguished three entrepreneurial processes in new venture development, i.e. discovery of opportunities, securing resources, and obtaining legitimacy, which are of importance for survival and performance. This paper examines how these processes are influenced by strong and/or weak ties and whether the degree of innovation (incremental versus radical) acts as a contingency factor in the way network ties support entrepreneurial processes. In this explorative study three cases on high technology firms in The Netherlands provide empirical material enabling us to develop a number of propositions on the network effect, in particular the mix of strong and weak ties, on the three entrepreneurial processes. The author examines the development of Israel's high technology industry, analyzes some of its current problems, and assesses its potential.

The article explores how the innovative performance of small high-tech firms relates to their external networking activities, and whether geographical proximity in their network relations matters. Data from a small sample of electronics firms and software developers in South East England are used to construct indicators of innovativeness, which are correlated with variables capturing intensity of external interactions and proximity benefits. The regional science base is found to have played a key role in nurturing new high-tech ventures, but science parks had not contributed to this. Interaction with parties with complementary capabilities such as suppliers and service providers is also associated with high innovative performance. However, the findings do not support the current policy fashion of encouraging regional networks revolving around firms in similar business activities and close customer relations. A study was conducted to analyze statistical differences in implementing design and innovation strategies between winners of the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement and a group of high-technology companies. Some of the issues examined in the study include the way in which technological success is conceptualized and the usefulness of awards as a benchmark for innovative companies. Results indicated little differences between the award winners and the comparative group.

The emergence of technology-based businesses from academic institutions in Bulgaria and Hungary was investigated. An interview survey of 102 technology-based firms, commonly called academic spin-offs, provided information on how this type of public sector entrepreneurship is formed and the mechanisms by which the sector develops. This study focuses on the link between research and development (R&D) expenditures and two firm technology measures: technological cycle time and technological strength. The subsequent focus is on the two firm technology measures and firm performance while controlling for firm size and productivity. An empirical test on 49 firms across several industries revealed that the first link was quite weak, possibly caused by the inclusion of much engineering on ongoing operations being included in R&D. However, the overall model results were quite strong, showing that 45% of the variation in firm performance, measured by operating profits, was explained by the comprehensive three-stage model.
