During this thesis, we experimentally reproduced centimeter-scale earthquakes under stress conditions close to reality. The experiments allowed us to explore two main themes: (i) the origin of high-frequency radiation during the dynamic rupture and (ii) foreshocks during the nucleation of dynamic rupture. Our results show that the high-frequency radiation is concomitant with the propagation of the rupture front and that two parameters induce an increase of the high-frequency radiation: normal stress and rupture velocity. Microstructural analyzes of rock samples suggest that coseismic damage or gouge particles production also contribute to highfrequency radiation. The study of foreshocks (i.e., acoustic precursors) shows that nucleation process is almost fully aseismic. This very low coupling could explain the few observations of foreshocks at the scale of crustal faults. The temporal analysis of acoustic emissions suggests that their dynamics is mainly controlled by slip acceleration during nucleation phase. Microtopographic and microstructural analyses of the rock samples show that the coupling is directly related to the roughness of the fault plane. An increase in normal stress conditions favors the occurrence of plastic deformation processes or partial melting during the seismic rupture, which reduces the roughness and therefore the coupling.; Au cours de cette thèse, nous avons reproduit expérimentalement des séismes à l’échelle centimétrique dans des conditions de pression proches de la réalité. Les expériences réalisées nous ont permis d’explorer deux grandes thématiques : (i) l’origine du rayonnement haute-fréquence pendant la rupture dynamique et (ii) les signaux précurseurs pendant la phase de nucléation de la rupture dynamique. Nos résultats montrent que le rayonnement haute-fréquence est concomitant à la propagation du front de rupture et que deux paramètres induisent une augmentation du rayonnement haute-fréquence : l’état de contrainte initial et la vitesse de rupture. Les analyses microstructurales des échantillons de roches suggèrent que la production d’endommagement cosismique ou de particules de gouge contribue au rayonnement haute fréquence. L’étude des signaux précurseurs (i.e., précurseurs acoustiques) montre que la nucléation est un processus en très large majorité asismique. Ce très faible couplage pourrait expliquer le peu d’observations de séismes précurseurs à l’échelle des failles crustales. L’analyse temporelle des émissions acoustiques suggère que leur dynamique est principalement contrôlée par l’accélération du glissement pendant la phase de nucléation. La microtopographie et la microstructure des échantillons de roches montrent que le couplage est directement relié à la rugosité du plan de faille. Une augmentation des conditions de pression favorise l’occurrence de processus de déformation plastique ou de fusion partielle au cours de la rupture sismique, ce qui diminue la rugosité et donc le couplage.

Вивчено вплив мікрохвильового оброблення на термохімічні перетворення органічної маси вугілля з використанням скануючого електронного мікроскопу. 1The paper presents diagrams of the organic mass structure of coal macromolecules. Investigations were carried out on the microwave treatment of Z grade coal. A mathematical model of microwave radiation effect on the structure of the macromolecule of lowmetamorphosed coal was constructed. The effect of microwave treatment on thermochemical transformations of the coal organic mass using a scanning electron microscope was studied.

The kinematic fractal source model presented in this study is able to simulate broad-band accelerograms with spectral amplitudes proportional to a fraction of the directivity coefficient Cd in the far-field approximation. This approach is based on a composite source description, where subevents are generated using a fractal distribution of sizes, and, by summation, produces k-square space distribution of the slip. Each elementary source is described as a crack-type slip model growing circularly from a nucleation point when the rupture front reaches it. In order to better control the directivity effect, the location of the nucleation point for an elementary source is assumed to be scale-dependent. For the larger sources, the nucleation point is located near the intercept of the crack with the rupture front, whereas for smaller sources, it is randomly chosen within the crack. For simplicity, a constant rupture velocity is assumed. Each subevent is set up with scale-dependent rise-time, assuming a boxcar source-time function, hence filtering out its own high frequency radiation. The resulting mean slip-velocity functions are very similar to the ones derived from dynamic rupture modelling. Ground motion synthetics are computed by convolving the slip-velocity functions with the Green's functions. It is demonstrated that, in the far-field approximation, accelerogram spectra follow the ω2 model with amplitudes controlled by the frequency-dependent directivity effects. In particular, spectral amplitudes at high-frequencies are proportional to a fraction of Cd. These results were verified for few earthquake magnitudes. In addition, a validation exercise was made in the near-fault region by modelling the complete wavefield of strong ground motion at a few receivers and for several rupture scenarios. The synthetic strong-motion parameters are compared to the ones predicted by empirical attenuation relationships. It is shown that calculated standard deviations are in good agreement with the empirical ones, as well as the ground-motion parameter amplitudes predicted as a function of distance for whole interval of source distance considered in modelling. Minor differences were found in peak ground-accelerations computed at large distance from the fault, a problem related to the simplified response of the medium. © 2011 The Authors. For any earthquake, the slipping fault and the source of high-frequency seismic waves, by and large, coincide. On a more local scale, however, the areas of high seismic slip rate and of increased high-frequency radiation output (seismic luminosity) need not match. To study in some detail how slip rate and seismic luminosity are interrelated, a systematic study is performed that uses 251 records of teleseismic P waves from 23 intermediate-depth earthquakes of magnitude 6.8 and above. From a broadband trace we extract two time histories: (1) displacement and (2) 0.5–2.5 Hz band-passed and squared velocity, or ``HF power'', and calculate correlation coefficient, ρ between the two. To reduce the bias related to formation of P coda, a special procedure is applied to data. We estimated the average value ρ = 0.52 (range of event averages 0.35 to 0.65) for the correlation coefficient between the radiated time histories for displacement and ``HF power'', which is considerably below the ``ideal'' value of unity. We argue that the same or even lower value characterizes the degree of slip rate - seismic luminosity correlation at the fault. Two factors may contribute to the revealed decorrelation: (1) random fluctuations of observed HF power (inevitable for a signal with a limited bandwidth), and (2) the genuine mismatch of slip rate and mean luminosity. We show that these factors, acting separately, would result in the ρ values equal to, correspondingly, 0.72 and 0.80. We also show that genuine decorrelation is statistically significant. We conclude that the observed values of ρ indicate genuine differences between the distributions of the slip rate and the seismic luminosity over the fault area. These results provide important constraints both for the accurate wide-band simulation of strong ground motion and for theoretical dynamic source models.

Projektissa kehitettiin sahatavaran, viilun ja lastun kuivausmenetelmiä kiinnittämällä huomiota laatuun, kapasiteetin käytön tehostamiseen, tarvittavaan loppukosteuteen sekä asiakaspalvelun ja kuivauksen kannattavuuteen. Sahatavaran kuivausta seuraavien jäähdytys- ja tasaannutusolosuhteiden vaikutusta sahatavaran laatuun, kuntoon ja käytettävyyteen tutkittiin laboratorio- ja tehdasolosuhteissa. Sahatavaran laatuluokkien I-III arvonalennus oli 11,5 % (dimensio 75 x 150), jos kuorma otettiin laboratoriokuivaamosta suoraan pakkaseen. Vastaava arvonalennusprosentti oli 3,1 %, kun kuorma tasaannutettiin hallitusti. Käytännön kokeet eivät kuitenkaan vahvistaneet näitä tuloksia. Lämpöpumpusta tutkittiin paitsi perinteistä lämpöpumppua myös kemiallista ns. Adiac-prosessia. Teoreettisesti ja käytännön mittausten mukaan voidaan lämpöpumpun käytöllä säästää energiaa lähes 50 %. Viilun kuivureista tutkittiin simulointimallien avulla kuivauskaasun nopeuden, kuivurin segmentoinnin, vasta- ja myötävirtaperiaatteiden käyttöä sekä viilun esilämmityksen vaikutusta kuivurin energiatalouteen ja kapasiteettiin. Kuivauskaasun optimaaliseksi suutinnopeudeksi saatiin noin 20 m/s. Järjestämällä kuivurin loppupäähän lievemmät kuivausolosuhteet saadaan energiankulutusta pienennettyä samoin kuin käyttämällä puhdasta vastavirtaperiaatetta kuivauksessa. Viilunkuivurin poistoilma voidaan erilaisin järjestelyin käyttää viilun esilämmityksessä. Edullisimmassa tapauksessa energiankulutus vähenee noin 8 % ja kapasiteetti kasvaa lähes 10 %. Lämmöntalteenottolaitoksen tuotto pienenee kuitenkin samalla. Viilun kontaktikuivausta tutkittiin laboratorio-olosuhteissa. Tutkittavia muuttujia olivat viilun alkuja loppukosteus, puristinlämpötila ja -paine sekä valun paksuus. Optimaalinen puristuslämpötila on esim. 180 °C ja puristuspaine 0,2 MPa. Energiansäästömahdollisuus on 30-0 %. Viilujen syöttö kuivauskoneeseen ja manttelilevyjen likaantuminen ovat ongelmia puristinkuivureiden kannalta. Puun kemiallista kuivausta tutkittiin sekä teoreettisesti että laboratorio-olosuhteissa. Puun laatu kuivauksen jälkeen oli hyvä. Prosessissa voitanne säästää energiaa 30-40 % konventionaaliseen kuivaukseen verrattuna. Lastujen kuivauskokeita tehtiin sekä laboratorio-olosuhteissa että teollisuusmittakaavassa. Selvitettiin lastun esikuivaimen pienoismallin suorituskykyä ja taloudellisuutta. Tutkittiin lastunkuivurin poistokaasun hyödyntämistä ja säätöjärjestelmien kehittämistä. Poistokaasua hyödyntävän esikuivurin avulla voitaisiin kuivauskapasiteettia nostaa 10-15 % ja energiaa säästää ainakin vastaavassa määrin.

We monitor dynamic rupture propagation during laboratory stick-slip experiments performed on saw-cut Westerly granite under upper crustal conditions (10-90 MPa). Spectral analysis of high-frequency acoustic waveforms provided evidence that energy radiation is enhanced with stress conditions and rupture velocity. Using acoustic recordings band-pass filtered to 400-800 kHz (7-14 mm wavelength) and high-pass filtered above 800 kHz, we back projected high-frequency energy generated during rupture propagation. Our results show that the high-frequency radiation originates behind the rupture front during propagation and propagates at a speed close to that obtained by our rupture velocity inversion. From scaling arguments, we suggest that the origin of high-frequency radiation lies in the fast dynamic stress-drop in the breakdown zone together with off-fault coseismic damage propagating behind the rupture tip. The application of the back-projection method at the laboratory scale provides new ways to locally investigate physical mechanisms that control high-frequency radiation., Plain Language Summary Over geological time scales, partially or fully locked tectonic plates accumulate stress and strain. The stress and the strain build up on discontinuities that we call "faults." Natural faults exist either inside a tectonic plate or at the boundary between two distinct tectonic plates. When the stress accumulated on a fault exceeds the strength of the fault, the accumulated stress and strain, which can be interpreted in term of accumulated energy, are suddenly released. This natural phenomenon is called an "earthquake." During an earthquake, part of the energy is released in the form of seismic waves. Those seismic waves are responsible for the ground shaking. High-frequency waves usually cause most of the damage. To better understand the physical parameters that influence the generation of high-frequency waves, we experimentally reproduced microearthquakes and used them as a proxy to study real earthquakes. Our results showed that the higher the pressure acting on the fault when an earthquake is generated, the higher the amount of high-frequency radiations. Moreover, our observations underlined that, during an earthquake, high-frequency waves are released in specific areas on the fault. Thus, these results might be of relevance to improve seismic hazard assessment.
