2. Exploring Definitions of Success in Northern Territory Indigenous Higher Education Policy

Abstract

This article critically examines definitions of policy 'success' in the context of historical Indigenous higher education policy in the Northern Territory (NT), Australia. We begin by summarising applications of the often-used but arbitrary, rarely-critiqued terms 'policy success' and 'what works'. The paper chronologically articulates what 'policy success' has looked like in the context of historical Northern Territory higher education, based on a critical analysis of policy documents. We then apply Critical Race Theory and Indigenous research theories to highlight the power processes that are attached to representation of policy issues, creation of policy goals, and ultimately definitions of 'success'. We also consider the role of ethical principles in framing conceptions about what constitutes a worthy policy goal. We suggest expansion and resourcing of formalised Indigenous governance mechanisms is needed to create more productive dialogue about Indigenous higher education policy goals and, ultimately, discussions around what 'works'.

Abstract

"In the winter of 2016, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill, Chandra Melting Tallow, Jeneen Frei Njootli, Tania Willard, Amy Kazymerchyk and Aaron Leon came together at BUSH gallery to make a film about trapping rabbits. Gabrielle, a previous resident at BUSH and a long-time collaborator of Tania’s, had proposed the project the year before, after speaking with Jeneen about her experiences hunting and trapping in Gwich’in territory. Chandra, a sound artist who heads the musical project Mourning Coup, was invited to score the film, as well as to come trapping. Amy, a curator who has made films, was asked to be the Director of Photography and Aaron, a photographer who had also previously worked with BUSH gallery, joined the group as a camera person. "Emphasizing invisible labour and Indigenous-led economies, Coney Island Baby features a collaborative film project by Jeneen Frei Njootli, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill, Chandra Melting Tallow and Tania Willard, with cinematographers Amy Kazymerchyk and Aaron Leon. Filmed during a December excursion to BUSH gallery on the territory of the Secwépemc Nation — in the interior of British Columbia — Coney Island Baby follows the artists as they learn how to snare wild rabbits. As they work towards a vital skillset often performed by women in Indigenous communities, the film questions what shared forms of sustenance can propose alternatives to capitalism. You've heard it now.” —Thomas King, in this volume Read, Listen, Tell brings together an extraordinary range of Indigenous stories from across Turtle Island (North America). From short fiction to as-told-to narratives, from illustrated stories to personal essays, these stories celebrate the strength of heritage and the liveliness of innovation. Ranging in tone from humorous to defiant to triumphant, the stories explore core concepts in Indigenous literary expression, such as the relations between land, language, and community, the variety of narrative forms, and the continuities between oral and written forms of expression. Rich in insight and bold in execution, the stories proclaim the diversity, vitality, and depth of Indigenous writing. Building on two decades of scholarly work to centre Indigenous knowledges and perspectives, the book transforms literary method while respecting and honouring Indigenous histories and peoples of these lands. 23. Composition of Essential Oil from Tagetes minutaand its Cytotoxic, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities

Abstract

The essential oil from the leaves of Tagetes minutaL., growing wild in Yemen, was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 28 compounds were identified representing 74.2% of total oil composition. Major components of the essential oil were (Z)-ocimenone (15.9%), (E)-ocimenone (34.8%), (Z)-β-ocimene (8.3%), limonene (2.3%), (Z)-tagetone (1.8%), dihydrotagetone (1.4%) and an unidentified dimethylvinylketone derivative (20.6%). The oil showed moderate cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 breast tumor cells, with an IC50of 54.7 ± 6.2 μg/mL. In the DPPH radical scavenging assay, T. minutaoil showed potent antiradical activity with an IC50value of 36 μg/mL. Antimicrobial activity was also investigated on several microorganisms, and the essential oil exhibited high activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) with an inhibition zone of 23 mm. It also exhibited remarkable antifungal activity against Candida albicanswith an inhibition zone of 26 mm.

24. Chemical Composition and Anti-Proliferative Properties of Bursera graveolensEssential Oil

Abstract

Bursera graveolensis a wild tree of commercial importance native to the Neotropics, which has been widely used in folk medicine. In the present study, the chemical composition and anti-proliferative properties of the essential oil from B. graveolenswere assayed. The chemical composition of the essential oil, determined by GC-MS, was complex and dominated by limonene (26.5%). Burseraoil inhibited the growth of MCF-7 breast tumor cells as well as amastigotes of L. amazonensis, with IC50values of 48.9 ± 4.3 and 36.7 ± 4.7 μg/mL, respectively. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the oil was 103.9 ± 7.2 μg/mL against peritoneal macrophages from BALB/c mice. These results demonstrate that the essential oil from B. graveolensis a promissory antiproliferative product.

Abstract

The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Pulicaria undulataGamal Ed Din (syn P. orientalsensu Schwartz and P. jaubertiiGamal Ed Din) was analyzed by GC-MS. Major compounds of P. undulataoil were the oxygenated monoterpenenes, carvotanacetone (91.4%) and 2,5-dimethoxy-p-cymene (2.6.%). The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was evaluated against six microorganisms, Escherichia coli Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans, using disc diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The oil showed the strongest bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureusand methicillin-resistant S. aureus, as well as Candida albicans. The essential oil showed moderate cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 breast tumor cells, with an IC50of 64.6 ±13.7 μg/mL. Bioautographic assays were used to evaluate the acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effect as well as antifungal activity of the oil against Cladosporium cucumerinum.

Abstract

Background: Oleanolic acid is a triterpenoid that has shown in vitro cytotoxic activity against human tumour cells and is known to be present in many higher plants., Materials and Methods: Oleanolic acid is known to have some biological potential including anticancer property. Oleanolic acid was isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of Syzygium aromaticum seed with an aim of dervitatising the functional group and evaluating the biological activities of the semi-synthesised compounds. Acylation of the alcohol functional group of the oleanolic acid afforded the opportunity of hydrazine reaction to give 3-acetoleanolic hydrazide. Further reaction of 3-acetoleanolic hydrazide with benzyladehyde, glacial acetic acid and methanol resulted in the synthesis of the corresponding 3-acetoxyoleanolic hydrazone., Results: The semi-synthetic oleanolic acid derivatives did not exhibit enhanced cytotoxic activity over oleanolic acid itself., Conclusion: 3-acetoxyoleanolic hydrazide has a potent anticancer activity., (Copyright© 2014 International Institute of Anticancer Research (Dr. John G.
