2. 'I Build My Casa from Rocks!': Translanguaging in Shared Reading for Multilingual Learners

Abstract

The number of children learning English entering U.S. schools continues to rise, yet the majority of classroom teachers remain English-dominant. Many teachers feel under-prepared to work with the growing number of multilingual students. However, they can draw on a familiar curricular structure, shared reading, to build on children's cultural and linguistic strengths to support developing literacy. Research on shared reading indicated this instructional method positively impacts overall reading achievement. By applying sheltering techniques to shared reading we provide the supports needed for multilingual students. Leveraging tranlansguaging pedagogies during shared reading has the potential to further the impact on overall literacy development. In this article, specific instructional approaches that meet the needs of young multilinguals are shared. We provide greater access to shared reading by combining translanguaging pedagogy with four main sheltering techniques: scaffolding, guarded vocabulary, hands-on materials and cooperative learning. With greater access to shared classroom literacy experiences, multilingual children can achieve greater academic and linguistic success.

Abstract

Computational chemistry techniques are used along with spectroscopy to characterize acetaminophen synthesized in an undergraduate chemistry laboratory experiment. The inclusion of electronic structure calculations to provide infrared and Raman spectra in the synthesis and characterization of acetaminophen connects over-the-counter medications with which students are familiar to the experience of producing and characterizing a compound, and the growing role of computational chemistry in the chemical enterprise. The visualization of molecular motions associate with the absorption frequencies enhanced the understanding of the spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract

Simple Summary: Fruit flies are major pests that cause extensive damage to fruits and vegetables worldwide. Understanding how these insects respond to heat treatment is crucial for developing effective methods to control them. In this study, we investigated how the Queensland fruit fly and the Mediterranean fruit fly react at a molecular level when exposed to heat. We found that each species responds differently, activating different genes to cope with the stress. By identifying the specific genes involved, we can design targeted heat treatments that are more effective for each species. This tailored approach can improve the efficiency of pest control, reduce the need for harmful chemicals, and minimise damage to the environment. Our findings offer valuable insights for developing better strategies to manage fruit fly populations, ensuring healthier crops and reducing economic losses for farmers. This research highlights the importance of understanding species-specific responses to stress and provides a foundation for future studies aimed at optimising pest management techniques. Invasive Tephritid fruit flies rank among the most destructive agricultural and horticultural pests worldwide. Heat treatment is commonly employed as a post-harvest method to exterminate fruit flies in fruits or vegetables. These pest species exhibit distinct tolerance to heat treatments, suggesting that the molecular pathways affected by heat may differ among species. In this study, the Queensland fruit fly (Qfly), Bactrocera tryoni, was utilised as a model investigate its molecular response to heat stress through heat bioassays. RNA samples from flies before and after heat treatment were extracted and sequenced to identify genes with significant changes in expression. These findings were compared to another serious Tephritid fruit fly species, the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), Ceratitis capitata, under similar heat treatment conditions. The analysis reveals only three common genes: heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), HSP68, and 14-3-3 zeta protein. However, despite these shared genes, their expression patterns differ between Qfly and Medfly. This suggests that these genes might play different roles in the heat responses of each species and could be regulated differently. This study presents the first evidence of differing molecular responses to heat between Qfly and Medfly, potentially linked to their varied origins, habitats, and genetic backgrounds. These findings offer new insights into Tephritid fruit fly responses to heat at the molecular level, which may help refine post-harvest strategies to control these pests in the future. Abstract

Leptin (OB protein) is an important signal in the regulation of energy balance. Leptin levels correlate with adiposity, but also decrease acutely with caloric restriction and increase with refeeding. The brain is an established critical site of leptin function, yet little is known about leptin concentrations in the central nervous system relative to plasma levels, psychiatric diagnoses, and other endocrine parameters. Therefore, using a novel ultrasensitive leptin assay, we explored relationships of human plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leptin levels to body mass index, smoking, posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis, and levels of dopamine, monoamine metabolites, beta-lipotropin, glucocorticoid, and thyroid and cytokine hormones. A strong linear relation between CSF and plasma leptin levels in the am (r = 0.63; P < 0.002) and afternoon (r = 0.90; P < 0.0001) was revealed. CSF and plasma leptin concentrations decreased during a 12- to 20-h period of fasting. A strong association was found between plasma leptin and CSF dopamine levels (r = 0.74; P < 0.01) as well as between CSF leptin levels and urinary free cortisol (r = 0.73; P < 0.01). Both of these parameters covaried with leptin independently of adiposity, as estimated by body mass index. Implications for leptin transport, regulation, and its potential role in therapeutic strategies for obesity and diabetes are discussed.

31. Exploring RTI Reading Intervention for Hispanic English Learning Kindergarten Students in Central Alabama: A Mixed Methods Study

Abstract

This study addressed issues in implementing RTI Tier II reading intervention in kindergarten classrooms which contained Hispanic students learning English. In addition, the scope of reading progress of Hispanic students learning English was explored. The purpose of this research was to examine the frequency in providing RTI reading interventions and how they were implemented in kindergarten with Hispanic children who are learning English. This study employed an explanatory sequential (Quan ? QUAL) mixed methods design (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011). To address the purpose of the study, the overarching mixed methods question was: What is the frequency of RTI Tier II reading interventions for Hispanic kindergarten English learners and how are they implemented? Other quantitative questions included: What is the frequency of RTI Tier II reading interventions for Hispanic kindergarten English learners? * What indicators do teachers use to determine if a student needs RTI Tier II reading interventions? * What are the factors in planning and delivering RTI Tier II reading interventions? • What indicators are used to determine progress made by a student receiving RTI Tier II reading interventions? The central qualitative question was: How are RTI Tier II reading interventions for Hispanic kindergarten English learners implemented in the classroom setting? Sub-questions included: * What role do teachers' beliefs about the reading ability of Hispanic kindergarten English learners play in identifying students and delivering RTI Tier II reading interventions? * What criteria are used to identify a student for RTI Tier II reading interventions? * How do teachers plan and deliver RTI Tier II reading interventions in the classroom setting? * What criteria are used to document and establish progress of a student receiving the RTI Tier II reading interventions? * What is the scope of progress of students receiving RTI Tier II reading interventions? The first phase of the study included a quantitative survey for all kindergarten teachers in a school district in central Alabama. The second, qualitative phase, included an in-depth multiple case study analysis of four kindergarten teachers. In addition, assessment results of 12 Hispanic ELL focus students were analyzed. Finally, cross-case analysis was conducted on the teacher case studies and focus students. This study shed light on the instructional practices involving RTI Tier II reading interventions for Hispanic ELLs in kindergarten. In postwar Bosnia-Herzegovina, segregation along ethno-nationalistic lines and divergent pedagogies within the education system have presented challenges to social cohesion and the long-term stability of a society that is still struggling to rebuild, reconcile, and regain trust (Jancic, 2008). This article examines the current state of the education system within (a) leadership, (b) primary and secondary schooling (i.e., segregation, language of instruction, textbooks, and curriculum), (c) school-community relations (parent-teacher associations and international organizations), and (d) higher education. Within each of the four aspects, the article explores the challenges and possibilities for social cohesion presented within schools and through education at the larger societal level in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Abstract

The Australian Autism Educational Needs Analysis (ASD–ENA) highlighted the need for teachers to enhance their knowledge and understanding of autism. Researchers in the Autism CRC education program have developed a significant evidence base with the potential to inform and change teacher practice in order to improve student learning outcomes. However, knowledge translation is a complex business and changing the practice of teachers can be problematic. To meet this challenge, and ensure the direction and resources directly align with the needs of users, an online learning portal was co-designed and constructed to engage educators. This online learning portal would subsequently disseminate professional learning resources for educators, parents, and young people on the autism spectrum while supporting implementation of these in such a way that optimised school practices. This chapter reflects upon the identification of a set of national core themes in professional learning for teachers engaging with diverse learners and students on the autism spectrum. User experience and user research have been central throughout all stages of resource development and realised through wide consultation with all state-based and national stakeholders including teachers, clinical staff, principals, guidance officers, therapists, and policy makers. This process has been guided by core values of inclusion and authenticity, striving to authentically reflect the experiences and perspectives of young people on the autism spectrum. The portal intends to facilitate teacher understanding and adoption of evidence-based practices, the success of which will ultimately be realised through improved student outcomes.

Abstract

Wastewater monitoring (WM) of SARS-CoV-2 from sewers was applied throughout the world early in the COVID-19 pandemic. Sharing of protocols and experiences in WM of SARS-CoV-2 by national and international researchers and practitioners has been vital to ensuring the sensitivity and specificity of the methods. WM has been a valuable adjunct to human clinical testing, and when positive results occur in sewage, community testing has been increased. WM findings allow public health officials to track and respond to the impacts of loosening lockdown restrictions, demonstrating when return to normal social activities might occur without a resurgence of rapid community transmission, and they are particularly useful in areas with low human case numbers and/or low clinical testing rates. New research is required to address several practical knowledge gaps, for example, sampling protocols, prediction of case prevalence from viral numbers by modelling, and determination of detection limits. Communication to the Australian public of WM of SARS-CoV-2 has been via interactive, visual dashboards. Once SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations are introduced, WM could help track the underlying circulation of the virus in the population, the spread of known variants and its future evolution.

Abstract

One's expectancies for reinforcement from eating or from thinness are thought to represent summaries of one's eating-related learning history and to thus influence the development of binge-eating and purging behavior. In a 3-year longitudinal study, the authors tested this hypothesis and the hypothesis that binge eating also influences subsequent expectancy development. The authors used trajectory analysis to identify groups of middle school girls who followed different trajectories of binge eating, purging, eating expectancies, and thinness expectancies. Initial eating and thinness reinforcement expectancies identified girls whose binge eating and purging increased during middle school, and expectancies differentiated girls who began these problem behaviors from girls who did not. Initial binge-eating scores differentiated among eating expectancy developmental trajectories. The onset of most behaviors can be understood in terms of learned expectancies for reinforcement from these behaviors. The same model can be applied to the risk for eating disorders.
