Poly-victimization is often reported by formerly incarcerated women and leads to physical and mental health problems that interfere with daily functioning, sustained employment, and housing stability. Although reentry programs exist, few focus on the physical and emotional impact of multiple traumas. Passport to Freedom (P2F), a woman-centered, trauma-informed reentry program, was developed to support formerly incarcerated women. The pilot intervention, performed in 2017, focused on the connections between trauma and health, coping with symptoms, and managing one's own health. To examine the effectiveness and feasibility of the intervention, we performed the current mixed methods study with two phases: (1) focus groups, and (2) sessions combining mindfulness and health promotion activities with follow-up evaluations. Participants (N = 24) showed decreased symptoms of depression and concerns of everyday stressors after the intervention. Of participants, 84% (n = 16) reported practicing mindfulness and 63% (n = 8) stated that mindfulness exercises helped with daily stress management. The delivery of emergency care is an effective strategy to reduce the global burden of disease. Emergency care cross cuts traditional disease-focused disciplines to manage a wide range of the acute illnesses and injuries that contribute substantially to death and disability, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While the universal health coverage (UHC) movement is gaining support, and human rights and health systems are integral to UCH, few concrete discussions on the human right to emergency care have been taken place to date. Furthermore, no rights-based approach to developing emergency care systems has been proposed. In this article, we explore key components of the right to health (that is, availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of health facilities, goods and services) as they relate to emergency care systems. We propose the use of a rights-based framework for the fulfilment of core obligations of the right to health and the progressive realization of emergency care in all countries. Les soins d'urgence recoupent les disciplines traditionnelles centrees sur les maladies pour prendre en charge de nombreuses blessures et affections aigues qui contribuent sensiblement aux deces et aux handicaps, en particulier dans les pays a revenu faible et intermediate. Hot mixed asphalt (HMA) is a mixture of particles (coarse and fine aggregates) and interstitial fluid (asphalt binder) designed to compact and harden for long-lasting roads. In this study, we implement a two-scale approach to capture the compaction behaviour of hot asphalt mixtures using both a granular-slurry rheology (GSR) at a smaller scale and a discrete element method (DEM) simulation at the scale of a compactor. We show that this modelling effort captures the compaction of HMA with different binder viscosities modified by adding graphene nano-platelets (GNP). This research has the capacity to shed light on how the properties of mixture components can influence compaction efficiency and effectiveness.

This paper describes a school-based asthma education program for rural elementary school nurses. The program was designed to teach school nurses in 7 rural counties in Maryland how to implement and to reinforce asthma management behaviors in children with asthma and their caregivers. Rural nurses who participated in this program increased their mean asthma knowledge scores more than nurses who did not take the program. The program also increased self-efficacy among intervention school nurses, but the difference in self-efficacy between intervention and control nurses was not statistically significant at follow-up. No effects on documentation or communication behaviors were noted. Only 25% of the nurses reported an interest in implementing future asthma educational programs for children with asthma. This study indicates the importance of understanding the unique characteristics of rural school nurses, the resources they need, and the barriers and challenges they face in their practice. Segregation is common in granular flows consisting of mixtures of particles differing in size or density. In gravity-driven flows, both gradients in total pressure (induced by gravity) and gradients in velocity fluctuation fields (often associated with shear rate gradients) work together to govern the evolution of segregation. Since the local shear rate and velocity fluctuations are dependent on the local concentration of the components, understanding the co-evolution of segregation and flow is critical for understanding and predicting flows where there can be a variety of particle sizes and densities, such as in nature and industry. Kinetic theory has proven to be a robust framework for predicting this simultaneous evolution but has a limit in its applicability to dense systems where collisions are highly correlated. In this paper, we introduce a model that captures the coevolution of these evolving dynamics for high density gravity driven granular mixtures. For the segregation dynamics we use a recently developed mixture theory (Fan & Hill 2011, New J. Phys; Hill & Tan 2014, J. Fluid Mech.) which captures the combined effects of gravity and fluctuation fields on segregation evolution in high density granular flows. For the mixture flow dynamics, we use a recently proposed viscous-elastic-plastic constitutive model, which can describe the multi-state behaviors of granular materials, i.e. the granular solid, granular liquid and granular gas mechanical states (Fei et al. 2016, Powder Technol.). The platform we use for implementing this model is a modified Material Point Method (MPM), and we use discrete element method simulations of gravity-driven flow in an inclined channel to demonstrate that this new MPM model can predict the final segregation distribution as well as flow velocity profile well. We then discuss ongoing work where we are using this platform to test the effectiveness of particular segregation models under different boundary conditions.

The author, principal at North Point High School of Science, Technology and Industry in Charles County, Maryland, describes how the school merges traditional academic classes with cutting-edge career and technical education courses to prepare students for the real world. Realizing that its traditional "vo-tech" model was undersubscribed and ineffective, the Charles County School District redesigned its program in the early 2000s, seeking advice from representatives of career fields and universities. This process led the district to build a new school that incorporated traditional classroom space with specialized areas for hands-on work and training in science and technology. The school developed 17 science and technical programs, or "career majors," each with its own sequence of courses--both technical education courses and academic classes offering related content. Half of North Point High School's 2,000 students participate in this science and technology program, beginning in 9th grade and continuing through all four years. Many students in the program receive college credit for courses while still in high school or graduate with a recognized certification in their career or choice.
