Spatial discretisation of geometrically complex computational domains often entails unstructured meshes of general topology for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Mesh skewness is then typically encountered causing severe deterioration of the formal order of accuracy of the discretisation, or boundedness of the solution, or both. Particularly methods inherently relying on the accurate and bounded transport of sharp fields suffer from all types of mesh-induced skewness errors, namely both non-orthogonality and non-conjunctionality errors. This work is devoted to a boundedness-preserving strategy to correct for skewness errors arising from discretisation of advection and diffusion terms within the context of interfacial heat and mass transfer based on the Volume-of-Fluid methodology. The implementation has been accomplished using a second-order finite volume method with support for unstructured meshes of general topology. We examine and advance suitable corrections for the finite volume discretisation of a consistent single-field model, where both accurate and bounded transport due to diffusion and advection is crucial. In order to ensure consistency of both the volume fraction and the species concentration transport, i.e. to avoid artificial heat or species transfer, corrections are studied for both cases. The cross interfacial jump and adjacent sharp gradients of species concentration render the correction for skewness-induced diffusion and advection errors additionally demanding and has not so far been addressed in the literature.

9. The entrepreneurial engineer : an investigation into the relationship between humanitarian engineering and entrepreneurship

‘Humanitarian Engineering’ (engineering to support society) is an initiative that has seen considerable growth in recent years within Australasia and North America and more recently within the UK. It is however still in a nascent phase, and is without a clear global definition. Entrepreneurship on the other hand is well established, understood and has been researched globally for several decades, although still presents conflicting views of what it means to be entrepreneurial. Entrepreneurship does not, on the surface, appear to share obvious connections with humanitarian engineering, however, when considering the researched characteristics of entrepreneurial individuals such as creativity, perseverance and risk taking and characteristics shown by humanitarian engineers, similarities can be seen. The purpose of this research is to develop a clear definition for the term ‘Humanitarian Engineering’ and to investigate rigorously the relationship between entrepreneurial characteristics and the characteristics of those studying humanitarian engineering; both qualitative and quantitative data will be used. Qualitative data are gathered from individuals engaged in humanitarian engineering and provides insight into the definition of humanitarian engineering in a UK context. The primary quantitative research method is an updated version of Gasse and Tremblay’s (2006) Entrepreneurial Characteristic Inventory that measures the 11 recognised entrepreneurial characteristics. This allowed the author to compare and contrast these characteristics as demonstrated by students studying general engineering, humanitarian engineering and enterprise. The quantitative results show that seven of the 11 entrepreneurial characteristics measured are significantly higher in humanitarian engineering students compared with the general engineering students. Nine of the eleven characteristics measured are significantly higher in enterprise students compared with the humanitarian engineering students. Entrepreneurial characteristics are important within engineering, due to the economic impact and association with competencies listed within UK-SPEC to meet Chartered Engineer status but engineers are often the least engaged with entrepreneurial support packages in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This research shows that engagement in humanitarian engineering activities by graduates can act as an indicator for employers of engineers, during the recruitment process, to the existence of these desired entrepreneurial competencies. Further impact of this research is the potential targeting of students within HEIs for enterprise support mechanisms to increase venture start-ups and enhance the relationship between engineering faculties and the enterprise agenda.

Introduction: Startle habituation and prepulse inhibition (PPI) are distinct measures of different sensory information processes, yet both result in the attenuation of the startle reflex. Identifying startle habituation and PPI neural mechanisms in humans has mostly evolved from acoustic-focused rodent models. Human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have used tactile startle paradigms to avoid the confounding effects of gradient-related acoustic noise on auditory paradigms and blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) measures. This study aimed to examine the neurofunctional basis of acoustic startle habituation and PPI in humans with silent fMRI. Methods: Using silent fMRI and simultaneous electromyography (EMG) to measure startle, the neural correlates of acoustic short-term startle habituation and PPI [stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) of 60 ms and 120 ms] were investigated in 42 healthy adults (28 females). To derive stronger inferences about brain-behaviour correlations at the group-level, models included EMGassessed measures of startle habituation (regression slope) or PPI (percentage) as a covariate. A linear temporal modulator was modelled at the individual-level to characterise functional changes in neural activity during startle habituation. Results: Over time, participants showed a decrease in startle response (habituation), accompanied by decreasing thalamic, striatal, insula, and brainstem activity. Startle habituation was associated with the linear temporal modulation of BOLD response amplitude in several regions, with thalamus, insula, and parietal lobe activity decreasing over time, and frontal lobe, dorsal striatum, and posterior cingulate activity increasing over time. The paradigm yielded a small amount of PPI (9–13%). No significant neural activity for PPI was detected. Discussion: Startle habituation was associated with the thalamus, putamen, insula, and brainstem, and with linear BOLD response modulation in thalamic, striatal, insula, parietal, frontal, and posterior cingulate regions. These findings provide insight into the mediation and functional basis of the acoustic primary startle circuit. Instead, whilst reduced compared to conventional MRI, scanner noise may have disrupted prepulse detection and processing, resulting in low PPI and impacting our ability to map its neural signatures. Our findings encourage optimisation of the MRI environment for acoustic PPI-based investigations in humans. Combining EMG and functional neuroimaging methods shows promise for mapping short-term startle habituation in healthy and clinical populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This thesis draws upon evidence from over twenty archives in the UK and US. It uses the context of Liverpool, arguably the ‘second city of empire’ because of its extensive social, economic, and political networks overseas, to enhance knowledge of British imperialism during the American Revolutionary era (1763-1783).Part One analyses the ‘gentlemanly capitalist’ paradigm of P.J. Cain and A.G. Hopkins. In brief, this theory argues that the landed elite and financial-commercial services, concentrated upon the City of London, held sway over British imperial policy-making. This was chiefly because these interests were regarded as being ‘gentlemanly’, or socially acceptable, to the landed elite. In contrast, northern manufacturers were less influential in the imperial decision-making process. By working longer hours and being associated with labour unrest, industrialists were not perceived as being sufficiently gentlemanly by the ruling order. My dissertation tests this theory within the context of the late-eighteenth century. This is an original contribution to knowledge because most, although not all, studies of Cain and Hopkins focus upon later periods. Hanoverian Liverpool is an ideal test case because the town had a mixed economy. It contained a manufacturing base, served a wider industrial hinterland, and, because Liverpool was linked to the Atlantic empire, spawned a mercantile service sector community with interests in commerce and finance. This thesis generally supports Cain and Hopkins, but with some modifications. One of these is to view the late-eighteenth century as a period of emerging gentlemanly capitalism, referred to here as ‘proto-gentlemanly capitalism’. The fact that Liverpool merchants and the local landed elite were not yet fully socially integrated, is one of several reasons why the town lacked success in influencing imperial policy-making between 1763 and 1783.Warfare was synonymous with the Hanoverian empire. Therefore, Part Two expands our knowledge of the empire at home, or how the American War (1775-1783) impacted upon Liverpool economically, socially, and culturally. Previous histories of the economic impact of this conflict upon Liverpool concentrated upon overseas trade, and therefore stressed its negative consequences. However, this thesis looks at both overseas trade and domestic business. It paints a more nuanced picture, and, by using Liverpool as a case study, shows that the impact of warfare upon the UK economy produced mixed results. Finally, this thesis considers the socio-cultural impact of the war upon Liverpool. In the process, it demonstrates that military conflict affected both the northern and southern regions of Britain during the eighteenth century. Militarisation of the local community prompted discussions regarding the boundaries of national and local government. The War of Independence split opinion, thereby revealing divergent trends within British imperial ideology. Finally, on balance, the American War cultivated a ‘British’ national identity in the town (although there were still other identities present).

A fish swims by stimulating its muscles and causing its body to "wiggle", which in turn generates the thrust required for propulsion. The relationship between the forces generated by the fish muscles and the observed pattern of movement is governed by the mechanics of the internal structure ofthe fish, and the fluid mechanics of the surrounding water. The mathematical modell ing of how fish swim involves coupling the external "biofluiddynamics" to the body's internal solid mechanics. The best-known theory for the hydrodynamics of fish swimming is Lighthill's elongated body theory (Lighthill, 1975). In Lighthill's theory the curvature of the fish is assumed small and the effect on the fish of the vortex wake is neglected. Cheng et al. (1991) did not make these simplifications in developing their vortex lattice panel method, but the fish was assumed to be infinitely thin and its undulations of small amplitude. Lighthill's "recoil correction" is the addition of a solid-body motion to ensure that an imposed "swimming description" satisfies the conservation of momentum and angular momentum. A real fish is expected to minimize such sideways translation and rotation to avoid wasteful vortex shedding. Cheng and Blickhan (1994) found that the panel method model required a smaller recoil than did Lighthill's model. Our approach is to extend Cheng's model to large amplitude. Thus we include the effect of the wake on the fish, and the self-induced deformation of the wake itself. In studying the internal mechanics of the body we model the fish as an active bending beam. Using the equations of motion of cross-sectional slices of the body we can form a set of coupled differential equations for the bending moment distribution. At large amplitude the bending moment equations involve the tangential forces acting on the body (which may be neglected in the small amplitude version). Consequently we include the boundary layer along the fish in order to estimate the viscous drag directly. The panel method has been used successfully for the fluid mechanical calculations associated with large-amplitude fish swimming. We are able to use its results as input to calculate the bending moment distribution. The boundary layer calculations are based on a crude model; solutions to the large amplitude bending moment equations should also be considered in this light.

However, this article sheds new light by exploring the port's other whaling activities – namely, the southern whale fishery. In doing so, this short research note expands the geography of Liverpool's whaling industry and suggests that it may have had ties to the port's most notorious activity – transatlantic slavery. Um die Simulation eines lokal aufgelösten Stoffübergangs zu ermöglichen, wird das Generalised Continuous Species Transfer (GCST)-Modell entwickelt. The numerical simulation of the distillation and absorption/desorption process is made possible by coupling a transient two-phase simulation in a structured packing with a model for the simulation of the species transfer. The two-phase flow is modelled by the Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) method. To enable the simulation of a locally resolved species transfer, the Generalised Continuous Species Transfer (GCST) model is developed.

Acute toxicity caused by illicit substance use is a common reason for emergency department (ED) presentation. Knowledge of the substances involved is helpful for predicting and managing potential toxicity, but limited information is available about the accuracy of patient-reported substance exposure. This study assessed the accuracy of the history of exposure in those reporting use of a single substance by comparison with those identified by detailed toxicological analysis, focusing on synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRA). Adults (≥16 years) presenting between March 2015 and July 2021 to participating UK hospitals with toxicity after reporting use of a single illicit substance were included. Exposure details were documented from medical records and blood and/or urine samples analysed using high-resolution accurate mass liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HRAM LCMS). Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the exposure history were calculated by comparison with biological sample analysis ("gold standard"). Single substance exposure was reported for 474 (median age 33 years, IQR: 18 range 16–75, 80% males) patients. Analysis commonly identified multiple substances (Median 3, IQR 2–5). A history of exposure was documented for 121 of 151 patients where a SCRA or metabolite was detected on analysis (sensitivity 80.1%, 95% CI 72.9, 86.2%). Corresponding proportions were lower for 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 44/70, 62.9%., 95% CI 50.5%, 74.1%), heroin 41/108 (38.0% 95% CI 28.8–47.8%) and cocaine (22/56, 31.3%, 95% CI 20.9, 43.6%). Multiple undeclared substances were detected analytically in most patients reporting single substance use. Clinicians should be alert to the potential presence and toxicity of unreported substances when managing patients presenting after substance misuse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
