An unavailable semi-analytical non-local 3D solution for functionally graded nanoshells with constant radii of curvature is presented. The small length scale effect is included in Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory. The constitutive and equilibrium equations are written in terms of curvilinear orthogonal coordinates systems which are only valid for spherical and cylindrical shells, and rectangular plates. The stresses and displacements are assumed in terms of the Navier method which is applicable for simply supported structures. The derivatives in terms of thickness are approximated by the differential quadrature method (DQM). The thickness domain is discretized by the Chebyshev–Gauss–Lobatto grid distribution. Lagrange interpolation polynomials are considered as the basis function for DQM. The correct free surface boundary condition for out-of-plane stresses is considered. Several problems of isotropic and functionally graded shells subjected to different types of loads are analyzed. The results are compared with other three-dimensional solutions and higher-order theories. It is important to emphasize that the radii of curvature are crucial at nanoscale, so it should be considered in the design of nanodevices.

This paper describes the architecture of a weather routing system consisting of two key elements: onboard monitoring and route optimiser sub-systems. The former is responsible for collecting various onboard measurements, such as current ship position or ship motion variables. These data, when gathered and processed, are then used for fine-tuning a ship model. The model, together with weather forecasts, is utilised by a multi-objective route optimiser to estimate forecasted ship responses during the voyage. The route optimiser has been developed in a client-server architecture to reallocate all necessary high-tech resources to the server side and keep the client software as simple and light as possible. The system also includes a module responsible for optimising transmission costs, to reduce onboard transmission during the voyage. The entire solution has been deployed onboard the demonstrator ship ‘Monte da Guia’ and tested during its operations at sea.

This paper presents different non-polynomial hybrid models in the framework of Carrera's Unified Formulation for the bending of a magneto-electric shell with variable radii of curvature. The shell's middle surface is graphed by a parametric surface. Differential Geometry is employed for evaluating the Lamé Parameters and Radius of Curvature. The mechanical displacements are modeled in the context of an equivalent single layer by sinusoidal, hyperbolic, and tangential models. The electrical and magnetic scalar potential functions are written by a polynomial thickness function in the framework of Layerwise theory. The shell panels are subjected to mechanical, electrical, and magnetic loads. The governing equations are obtained by the Principle of Virtual Displacement. The correspondent partial differential equations are discretized by Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto grid distribution and solved by the so-called Differential Quadrature Method. The classical Lagrange polynomial is employed as the basis function for the method. The stresses, electrical displacement, and magnetic induction are recovered by the three-dimensional (3D) equilibrium equations. A comparative analysis with 3D solutions provided in the literature is performed for a square plate and a doubly curved shallow shell panel and remarkable results are obtained. So, the validated models are further used to study shells with variable radii of curvature; specifically, for helicoid, ellipsoid, and catenoid panels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract There are very few precise and reliable solutions available in the existing literature for functionally graded plates with fully clamped ends under mechanical loads, indicating a significant research gap in this area. In this article, an analytical solution for clamped functionally graded plates subjected to mechanical load is introduced. The shear deformation theory, governing equations, and boundary conditions are derived based on the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) strategy, and the solution is obtained by using the boundary-discontinuous Fourier method. The mechanical properties of the plates are assumed to vary according to an exponential law and a power-law distribution along the thickness direction in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The results presented in this article cover a large spectrum of plate thicknesses, ranging from thick to thin, and encompass various values of the functionally graded parameter. Accurate results of shear deformation theories with various order of expansion are achieved. Finally, a gap in the literature is covered and benchmarks solution are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
