This workshop will explore strategies for teaching visualization literacy - from sketching to creating visualizations using computational tools. Led by instructors from the humanities, visual analytics, design, and computer science, sessions will discuss different methodologies and challenges of teaching visualization to audiences with varied technical and disciplinary expertise and goals.

Data visualization is becoming an important asset for a data-literate, informed, and critical society. Despite the variety of existing resources to teach theories and practical skills in this domain, little is known about 1) how learning processes in the context of visualization unfold and 2) best practices for engaging and teaching data visualization to diverse audiences and in different contexts. This Dagstuhl Seminar invited practitioners, researchers, and teachers from the areas of visualization, design, education and cognitive psychology to explore these questions from multiple perspectives. Through a range of practical activities, talks, and discussions, we have begun characterizing and classifying teaching methodologies. We have redacted a pedagogical manifesto, and started formalizing the concept of improvisation with visualization in the context of teaching and learning. We have also interrogated creativity as an important aspect of visualization teaching and learning and explored links between data physicalization and visualization teaching activities. International audience; The articles in this special section focus on data physicalization. The practice of representing data in physical form has existed for thousands of years, yet it has only become an area of investigation and exploration for scientists, designers, and artists much more recently.3 Advances in areas such as digital fabrication, actuated tangible interfaces, and shape-changing displays have spurred an emerging area of research now called Data Physicalization.1 This Special Issue of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications presents four articles spanning a wide breadth of current data physicalization research, from theory to practice.

International audience; This workshop focuses on 'data-visualization activities', especially methods and challenges for teaching and engaging with data visual-ization concepts, knowledge, and practices. For example, sketching aids designers to consider alternative ideas; manipulating tokens help students conceptualize quantities for data visualization; user interviews and discussions help developers understand requirements. Workshops, classes, or collaborations with domain experts, often include hands-on data visualization activities that involve analog or digital tools and materials and more or less well defined protocols. Recent years have seen the emergence of such data visualization activities in different contexts, including education, visualization design, activism, self-reflection, and interdisciplinary collaboration. However, the broad range of contexts and target audiences that Data-Vis activities have been applied to makes it difficult to collect and identify commonalities and build knowledge in a systematic way. Thus, the goals of this workshop are i) start building an understanding and to synthesize protocols and materials used to lead data vis activities, ii) to bring together researchers, practitioners, and educators from within and outside of the visualization community, iii) brainstorm, design, experience, and try novel activities, and to iv) discuss issues around goals, methods, audiences, materials, and evaluation for teaching data visualization.

International audience; Selbstreflexion ist ein zentrales Ziel persönlicher Informatiksysteme, und es wurde festgestellt, dass die Konstruktion von Visualisierungen aus physischen Token den Menschen hilft, über Daten nachzudenken. Bisher wurde die Physikalisierungskonstruktion jedoch nur in Laborumgebungen mit bereitgestellten Datensätzen untersucht. Unsere qualitative Studie untersucht die Konstruktion von persönlichen Physisierungen in der häuslichen Umgebung von Menschen über 2-4 Wochen. Es liefert ein Verständnis von (1) dem Prozess der Schaffung persönlicher Physisierungen, (2) den Arten von persönlichen Einsichten, die ermöglicht werden, (3) der Integration von Selbstreflexion in den Prozess der Physisierung und (4) seinen Vorteilen und Herausforderungen für die Selbstreflexion. Wir haben festgestellt, dass in der konstruktiven persönlichen Physisierung, Datenerhebung, Konstruktion und Selbstreflexion tief verwoben sind. Wir zeigen, wie Vorteile wie Reflexion durch manuelle Konstruktion, Personalisierung und Präsenz im Alltag auf ein breiteres Spektrum digitaler und physischer Systeme übertragen werden können.; Self-reflection is a central goal of personal informatics systems, and constructing visualizations from physical tokens has been found to help people reflect on data. However, so far, physical-ization construction has only been studied in lab environments with provided datasets. Our qualitative study investigates the construction of personal physicalizations in people's domestic environments over 2-4 weeks. It contributes an understanding of (1) the process of creating personal physicalizations, (2) the types of personal insights facilitated, (3) the integration of self-reflection in the physicalization process, and (4) its benefits and challenges for self-reflection. We found that in constructive personal physicalization, data collection, construction and self-reflections are deeply intertwined. This extends previous models of visualization creation and data-driven self-reflection. We outline how benefits such as reflection through manual construction , personalization, and presence in everyday life can be transferred to a wider set of digital and physical systems.; La reflexion personnelle est un objectif central des systèmes informatiques personnels, et la construction de visualisations à partir de jetons physiques a été trouvée pour aider les gens à réfléchir sur les données. Cependant, jusqu'à présent, la construction de la physique n'a été étudiée que dans des environnements de laboratoire avec des ensembles de données fournis. Notre étude qualitative porte sur la construction de physicalisations personnelles dans l'environnement domestique des gens sur une période de 2 à 4 semaines. Il permet de comprendre (1) le processus de création de physicalisations personnelles, (2) les types de perspectives personnelles facilitées, (3) l'intégration de l'autoréflexion dans le processus de physicalisation, et (4) ses avantages et ses défis pour l'autoréflexion. However, it is only in the past decade that data physicalization is being discussed as a dedicated form of research and design practice primarily concerned with the design of physical artefacts "whose geometry or material properties encode data" [10] to facilitate sensemaking and communication. For visualization, as the dominant form of data representation, established principles and tax-onomies exist to guide designers. However, an equivalent design vocabulary has yet to be established for data physicalization. The aim of this workshop is to draw together practitioners and researchers from the visualization, HCI, and design communities in order to discuss different approaches toward a design language for data physicalization. Through a series of invited talks alternating with hands-on discussions of existing physicalization examples, the workshop will start to consolidate different efforts of characterizing and evaluating the core properties or "variables" that drive data physicalization, and to define a research agenda in this area.; L'utilisation de représentations physiques pour faciliter la communication, l'analyse, l'enseignement et la recherche est aussi vieille que l'humanité. Cependant, ce n'est que depuis une dizaine d'années que la matérialisation des données est discutée comme une forme de recherche et de conception spécialisée, principalement axée sur la conception d'artefacts physiques "dont la géométrie ou les propriétés matérielles encodent les données" [10] pour faciliter la perception et la communication. Pour la visualisation, en tant que forme dominante de représentation des données, il existe des principes et des taxonomies établis pour guider les concepteurs. Cependant, un vocabulaire de conception équivalent doit encore être établi pour la matérialisation des données. L'objectif de cet atelier est de réunir des praticiens et des chercheurs des communautés de la visualisation, de l'IHM et de la conception afin de discuter des différentes approches d'un langage de conception pour la matérialisation des données. The world’s oldest universities have started digitizing their historical student/staff records. Such data collections have the potential to provide valuable insights into the early educated population’s social and cultural profile and inform research regarding the formation of academic networks. While textual, web-based search interfaces provide universal access to these collections for scholars and the general public, they can only provide narrow views on a record-by-record basis. This article presents and critically discusses a pilot study which uses an off-the-shelf visualization tool as a means to enable the interactive exploration of patterns within the Biographical Register of the University of St Andrews (1747–1897) (BRUSA). Our visualizations provide insights into the history of the University unobtainable through close reading and at the same time highlight the limitations of standard visualization tools when used in the context of diverse historical records. In this paper, we discuss collaborations that can emerge between humanities and visualization researchers. Based on four case studies we illustrate different collaborative constellations within such cross-disciplinary projects that are influenced as much by the general project goals as by the expertise, disciplinary background and individual aims of the involved researchers. We found that such collaborations can introduce productive tensions that stretch the boundaries of visualization research and the involved humanities fields, often leaving team members "adrift'' trying to make sense of findings that are the result of a mixture of different (sometimes competing) research questions, methodologies, and underlying assumptions. We discuss inherent challenges and productive synergies that these drifts can introduce. We argue that greater critical attention must be brought to the collaborative process itself in order to facilitate effective cross-disciplinary collaborations, and also enhance potential contributions and research impact for all involved disciplines. We introduce a number of guiding questions to facilitate critical awareness and reflection throughout the collaborative process, allowing for more transparency, productive communication, and equal participation within research teams. Although recent research acknowledges the potential of visualization methods in DH, the predominant terminology used to describe visualizations (prototypes, tools) narrowly focuses on their use as a means to an end and, more importantly, as an instrument in the service of humanities research. While acknowledging the broad range of possible approaches to visualization, we introduce the metaphor of the sandcastle to highlight visualization as a research process in its own right. We argue that building visualization sandcastles provides a holistic approach to interdisciplinary knowledge generation that embraces visualization as (1) a dynamic interdisciplinary process where speculation and re-interpretation advance knowledge in all disciplines involved, (2) a mediator of ideas and theories within and across disciplines and (3) an aesthetic provocation to elicit critical insights, interpretation, speculation and discussions within and beyond scholarly audiences. We illustrate our argument based on our own research of an exceptional literary collection. Postprint
