We introduce new high-resolution galaxy simulations accelerated by a surrogate model that reduces the computation cost by approximately 75 percent. Massive stars with a Zero Age Main Sequence mass of about 8 solar masses and above explode as core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), which play a critical role in galaxy formation. The energy released by CCSNe is essential for regulating star formation and driving feedback processes in the interstellar medium (ISM). However, the short integration timesteps required for SNe feedback present significant bottlenecks in star-by-star galaxy simulations that aim to capture individual stellar dynamics and the inhomogeneous shell expansion of SNe within the turbulent ISM. Our new framework combines direct numerical simulations and surrogate modeling, including machine learning and Gibbs sampling. The star formation history and the time evolution of outflow rates in the galaxy match those obtained from resolved direct numerical simulations. We investigate SN 2014C using three-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling, focusing on its early interaction with dense circumstellar medium (CSM). Our objective is to uncover the pre-supernova (SN) CSM structure and constrain the progenitor star's mass-loss history prior to core collapse. Our comprehensive model traces the evolution from the progenitor star through the SN event and into the SN remnant (SNR) phase. We simulate the remnant's expansion over approximately 15 years, incorporating a CSM derived from the progenitor star's outflows through dedicated hydrodynamic simulations. Analysis reveals that the remnant interacted with a dense toroidal nebula extending from $4.3\times 10^{16}\,$cm to $1.5\times 10^{17}$ cm in the equatorial plane, with a thickness of approximately $1.2\times 10^{17}$ cm. The nebula's density peaks at approximately $3\times 10^6\,$cm$^{-3}$ at the inner boundary, gradually decreasing as $\approx r^{-2}$ at greater distances. This nebula formed due to intense mass-loss from the progenitor star between approximately 5000 and 1000 years before collapse. During this period, the maximum mass-loss rate reached about $8\times 10^{-4}\,M_{\odot}\,$yr$^{-1}$, ejecting $\approx 2.5\,M_{\odot}$ of stellar material into the CSM. Our model accurately reproduces Chandra and NuSTAR spectra, including the Fe K line, throughout the remnant's evolution. Notably, the Fe line is self-consistently reproduced, originating from shocked ejecta, with $\approx 0.05\,M_{\odot}$ of pure-Fe ejecta shocked during the remnant-nebula interaction. We study the formation of stars with varying amounts of heavy elements synthesized by the rapid neutron-capture process ($r$-process) based on our detailed cosmological zoom-in simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy with an $N$-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics code, ASURA. Most stars with no overabundance in $r$-process elements, as well as the strongly $r$-process enhanced $r$-II stars ([Eu/Fe] $>+0.7$), are formed in dwarf galaxies accreted by the Milky Way within the 6 Gyr after the Big Bang. In contrast, over half of the moderately enhanced $r$-I stars ($+0.3 <$ [Eu/Fe] $\leq +0.7$) are formed in the main in-situ disk after 6 Gyr. Our results suggest that the fraction of $r$-I and $r$-II stars formed in disrupted dwarf galaxies is larger the higher their [Eu/Fe] is. Accordingly, the most strongly enhanced $r$-III stars ([Eu/Fe] $> +2.0$) are formed in accreted components. These results suggest that non-$r$-process-enhanced stars and $r$-II stars are mainly formed in low-mass dwarf galaxies that hosted either none or a single neutron star merger, while the $r$-I stars tend to form in the well-mixed in-situ disk. We compare our findings with high-resolution spectroscopic observations of $r$-process-enhanced metal-poor stars in the halo and dwarf galaxies, including those collected by the R-Process Alliance. Quantum entanglement between the spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom in condensed matter systems can emerge due to an interplay between spin-orbit and vibronic interactions. Heavy transition metal ions decorated on a face-centered cubic lattice, for example in $5d^1$ double perovskites, are particularly suited to support these quantum entangled states, but direct evidence has not yet been presented. In this work, we report additional peaks in the low-energy spectra of a $5d^1$ double perovskite, Ba$_2$CaReO$_6$, which cannot be explained by adopting a purely classical description of lattice vibrations. Instead, our theoretical analysis demonstrates that these spectroscopic signatures are characteristic of orbital-lattice entangled states in Ba$_2$CaReO$_6$. Exotic quantum phases, arising from a complex interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, are of immense interest to a wide research community. A well-known example of such an entangled behavior is the Jahn-Teller effect, where the lifting of orbital degeneracy proceeds through lattice distortions, often accompanied by ordering of spins and metal-insulator transitions. Static distortions, including cooperative behavior, have been associated with colossal magneto-resistance, multiferroicity, high-$T_\mathrm{C}$ superconductivity and other correlated phenomena. Realizations of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, on the other hand, are scarce since the preservation of vibronic symmetries requires subtle tuning of the local environment. Here we demonstrate that a highly-symmetrical 5d$^1$ double perovskite Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$, comprising of a 3D array of isolated ReO$_6$ octahedra, fulfils these requirements, resulting in a unique case of a dynamic Jahn-Teller system with strong spin-orbit coupling. Thermodynamic and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments undoubtedly show that the Jahn-Teller instability leads to a ground-state doublet, invoking a paradigm shift for this family of compounds. The restoration of vibronic degrees of freedom arises from a quantum-mechanical zero-point motion, as revealed by detailed quantum chemistry calculations. The dynamic state of ReO$_6$ octahedra persists down to the lowest temperatures, where a multipolar order sets in, allowing for investigations of the interplay between a dynamic JT effect and strongly correlated electron behavior.

We construct a semi-analytical model that describes the convective core mass evolution of massive stars experiencing mass loss during the main-sequence stage. We first conduct a suite of 1D stellar evolution calculations to build insight into how convective core masses behave under idealized mass loss. Based on these simulations, we find several universal relations between global properties of the star that hold regardless of the mass loss history. By combining these relations, we construct a semi-analytic framework that can predict the convective core mass evolution for arbitrary mass loss histories and hence the helium core mass at the end of the main sequence. In previous papers I and II under the same title, we proposed a practical method called Efficient stairway up to the Sky, and apply it to some typical finite groups $G$, with Schur multiplier $M(G)$ containing prime number 3, to construct explicitly their representation groups $R(G)$, and then, to construct a complete set of representatives of linear IRs of $R(G)$, which gives naturally, through sectional restrictions, a complete set of representatives of spin IRs of $G$. In the present paper, we are concerned mainly with group $G=G_{39}$ of order 27 in a list of Tahara's paper, with $M(G)={\mathbb Z}_3\times {\mathbb Z}_3$. In this case, to arrive up to the Sky, we have two steps of one-step efficient central extensions. By the 1st step, we obtain a covering group of order 81, and by the 2nd step we arrive to $R(G)$ of order 243. At the 1st step, to construct explicitly a complete set of representatives of IRs of the group, we apply Mackey's induced representations, and at the 2nd step, with a help of this result, we apply so-called classical method for semidirect product groups given by Hirai and arrive to a complete list of IRs of $R(G)$. In the previous paper, we proposed a practical method of constructing explicitly representation groups $R(G)$ for finite groups $G$, and apply it to certain typical finite groups $G$ with Schur multiplier $M(G)$ containing prime number 3. In this paper, we construct a complete list of irreducible projective (or spin) representations of $G$ and compute their characters (called spin characters). It is a continuation of our study of spin representations in the cases where $M(G)$ contains prime number 2 to the cases where other prime $p$ appears, firstly $p=3$. Recent neutron star surface observations corroborate a long-standing theory that neutron stars may be accelerated over extended periods after their birth. We analyze how these prolonged rocket-like accelerations, combined with rapid birth kicks, impact binary orbits. We find that even a small contribution of rocket kicks combined with instantaneous natal kicks can allow binaries to reach period--eccentricity combinations unattainable in standard binary evolution models. We propose these kick + rocket combinations as a new channel to form wide low-eccentricity neutron star binaries such as Gaia NS1, as well as inducing stellar mergers months to years after a supernova to cause peculiar high-energy transients., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, published in ApJL

We performed numerical simulations of the common envelope (CE) interaction between two intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and their low-mass companions. For the first time, formation and growth of dust in the envelope is calculated explicitly. We find that the first dust grains appear as early as $\sim$1-3 yrs after the onset of the CE, and are smaller than grains formed later. As the simulations progress, a high-opacity dusty shell forms, resulting in the CE photosphere being up to an order of magnitude larger than it would be without the inclusion of dust. At the end of the simulations, the total dust yield is $0.0082~M_{\odot}$ ($0.022~M_{\odot}$) for a CE with a $1.7~M_{\odot}$ ($3.7~M_{\odot}$) AGB star. Schur multiplier $M(G)$ of a finite group $G$ has been studied heavily. To proceed further to the study of projective (or spin) representations of $G$ and their characters (called spin characters), it is necessary to construct explicitly a representation group $R(G)$ of $G$, a certain central extension of $G$ by $M(G)$, since projective representations of $G$ correspond bijectively to linear representations of $R(G)$. We propose here a practical method to construct $R(G)$ by repetition of one-step efficient central extensions according to a certain choice of a series of elements of $M(G)$. This method is also helpful for constructing linear representations of $R(G)$ and accordingly for calculating spin characters. Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) are those between 100 and 10$^5$ solar masses ($M_{\odot}$); their formation process is debated. One possible origin is the growth of less massive black holes (BHs) via mergers with stars and compact objects within globular clusters (GCs). However, previous simulations have indicated that this process only produces IMBHs $<500 M_{\odot}$ because the gravitational wave recoil ejects them when they merge with other BHs. We perform star-by-star simulations of GC formation, finding that high-density star formation in a GC's parent giant molecular cloud can produce sufficient mergers of massive stars to overcome that mass threshold. Transverse thermoelectric conversion holds significant potential in addressing complex challenges faced by classical Seebeck/Peltier modules. A promising transverse thermoelectric phenomenon is the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) originating from nontrivial band structures in magnetic topological materials. However, the currently reported performance for ANE in topological materials, e.g., Co$_2$MnGa, remains insufficient for practical thermoelectric applications. Here, we unveil a new availability for ANE by integrating magnetic topological materials into artificially tilted multilayers (ATMLs), known to exhibit the structure-induced transverse thermoelectric conversion due to the off-diagonal Seebeck effect. Our experiments reveal that the transverse thermoelectric performance in Co$_2$MnGa-based ATMLs is improved through the hybrid action of ANE and the off-diagonal Seebeck effect, with the modulation of performance dependent on magnetization being significantly greater than the performance achievable with ANE alone. This unconventional synergy underscores the importance of hybrid transverse thermoelectric conversion and paves a way for advancing thermoelectric applications using magnetic materials., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, 1 table

General ridge estimators are typical linear estimators in a general linear model. The class of them include some shrinkage estimators in addition to classical linear unbiased estimators such as the ordinary least squares estimator and the weighted least squares estimator. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions under which two general ridge estimators coincide. In particular, two noteworthy conditions are added to those from previous studies. The first condition is given as a seemingly column space relationship to the covariance matrix of the error term, and the second one is based on the biases of general ridge estimators. The L\'evy walk, a type of random walk characterized by linear step lengths that follow a power-law distribution, is observed in the migratory behaviors of various organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Notably, L\'evy walks with power exponents close to two, also known as Cauchy walks, are frequently observed, though their underlying causes remain elusive. This study proposes a walk model in which agents move toward a destination in multi-dimensional space and their movement strategy is parameterized by the extent to which they pursue the shortest path to the destination. This parameter is taken to represent the attractiveness of the destination to the agents. Our findings reveal that if the destination is very attractive, agents intensively search the area around it using Brownian walks, whereas if the destination is unattractive, they explore a distant region away from the point using L\'evy walks with power exponents less than two. In the case where agents are unable to determine whether the destination is attractive or unattractive, Cauchy walks emerge. The Cauchy walker searches the region with a probability inversely proportional to the distance from the destination. This suggests that it preferentially searches the area close to the destination, while concurrently having the potential to extend the search area much further. Our model, which can change the search method and search area depending on the attractiveness of the destination, has the potential to be utilized for exploring the parameter space of optimization problems.

The chemical abundances of Milky Way's satellites reflect their star formation histories (SFHs), yet, due to the difficulty of determining the ages of old stars, the SFHs of most satellites are poorly measured. Ongoing and upcoming surveys will obtain around ten times more medium-resolution spectra for stars in satellites than are currently available. To correctly extract SFHs from large samples of chemical abundances, the relationship between chemical abundances and SFHs needs to be clarified. Here, we perform a high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy with detailed models of star formation, supernova feedback, and metal diffusion. We quantify SFHs, metallicity distribution functions, and the $\alpha$-element (Mg, Ca, and Si) abundances in satellites of the host galaxy. We find that star formation in most simulated satellites is quenched before infalling to their host. Star formation episodes in simulated satellites are separated by a few hundred Myr owing to supernova feedback; each star formation event produces groups of stars with similar [$\alpha$/Fe] and [Fe/H]. We then perform a mock observation of the upcoming Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) observations. We find that Subaru PFS will be able to detect distinct groups of stars in [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] space, produced by episodic star formation. This result means that episodic SFHs can be estimated from the chemical abundances of $\gtrsim$ 1,000 stars determined with medium-resolution spectroscopy., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The pyrochlore oxide Pb2Re2O7-{\delta} (PRO) is a candidate spin-orbit-coupled metal (SOCM) that exhibits a structural phase transition with inversion symmetry breaking. In this study, we report the results of detailed X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on single crystals of PRO to clarify the crystal structure below the phase transition temperature at Ts = 300 K. In the XRD patterns, a clear peak splitting is observed below Ts, indicating a cubic to tetragonal transition. Based on the group-subgroup relationship and the observed reflection conditions, the space group of the low-temperature phase is proposed to be I4122, which agrees with optical second harmonic generation measurements. This space group is the same as that of the lowest temperature structure of the analogous SOCM Cd2Re2O7 (CRO), which is realized by the emergence of odd-parity multipole order. Wolf-Rayet stars in close binary systems can be tidally spun up by their companions, potentially leaving behind fast-spinning highly-magnetized neutron stars, known as ``magnetars", after core collapse. These newborn magnetars can transfer rotational energy into heating and accelerating the ejecta, producing hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe). In this {\em{Letter}}, we propose that the magnetar wind of the newborn magnetar could significantly evaporate its companion star, typically a main-sequence or helium star, if the binary system is not disrupted by the {abrupt mass loss and} SN kick. The subsequent heating and acceleration of the evaporated star material along with the SN ejecta by the magnetar wind can produce a post-peak bump in the SLSN lightcurve. Our model can reproduce the primary peaks and post-peak bumps of four example observed multiband SLSN lightcurves, revealing that the mass of the evaporated material could be $\sim0.4-0.6\,M_\odot$ if the material is hydrogen-rich. {We propose that the magnetar could induce strongly enhanced evaporation from its companion star near the pericenter if the orbit of the post-SN binary is highly eccentric, ultimately generating multiple post-peak bumps in the SLSN lightcurves. This ``magnetar-star binary engine" model may offer a possible explanation for the evolution of polarization, along with the origin and velocity broadening of late-time hydrogen or helium broad spectral features observed in some bumpy SLSNe.} The diversity in the lightcurves and spectra of SLSNe may be attributed to the wide variety of companion stars and post-SN binary systems., Comment: Accepted by ApJL, 14 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Cross-lingual continual pre-training of large language models (LLMs) initially trained on English corpus allows us to leverage the vast amount of English language resources and reduce the pre-training cost. In this study, we constructed Swallow, an LLM with enhanced Japanese capability, by extending the vocabulary of Llama 2 to include Japanese characters and conducting continual pre-training on a large Japanese web corpus. Experimental results confirmed that the performance on Japanese tasks drastically improved through continual pre-training, and the performance monotonically increased with the amount of training data up to 100B tokens. Consequently, Swallow achieved superior performance compared to other LLMs that were trained from scratch in English and Japanese. An analysis of the effects of continual pre-training revealed that it was particularly effective for Japanese question answering tasks. Furthermore, to elucidate effective methodologies for cross-lingual continual pre-training from English to Japanese, we investigated the impact of vocabulary expansion and the effectiveness of incorporating parallel corpora. The results showed that the efficiency gained through vocabulary expansion had no negative impact on performance, except for the summarization task, and that the combined use of parallel corpora enhanced translation ability.

Open Japanese large language models (LLMs) have been trained on the Japanese portions of corpora such as CC-100, mC4, and OSCAR. However, these corpora were not created for the quality of Japanese texts. This study builds a large Japanese web corpus by extracting and refining text from the Common Crawl archive (21 snapshots of approximately 63.4 billion pages crawled between 2020 and 2023). This corpus consists of approximately 312.1 billion characters (approximately 173 million pages), which is the largest of all available training corpora for Japanese LLMs, surpassing CC-100 (approximately 25.8 billion characters), mC4 (approximately 239.7 billion characters) and OSCAR 23.10 (approximately 74 billion characters). To confirm the quality of the corpus, we performed continual pre-training on Llama 2 7B, 13B, 70B, Mistral 7B v0.1, and Mixtral 8x7B Instruct as base LLMs and gained consistent (6.6-8.1 points) improvements on Japanese benchmark datasets. We also demonstrate that the improvement on Llama 2 13B brought from the presented corpus was the largest among those from other existing corpora., Comment: 17 pages

The first stars might have been fast rotators. This would have important consequences for their radiative, mechanical and chemical feedback. We discuss the impact of fast initial rotation on the evolution of massive Population III models and on their nitrogen and oxygen stellar yields. We explore the evolution of Population III stars with initial masses in the range of 9Msol < Mini < 120Msol starting with an initial rotation on the Zero Age Main Sequence equal to 70% of the critical one. We find that with the physics of rotation considered here, our rapidly-rotating Population III stellar models do not follow a homogeneous evolution. They lose very little mass in case mechanical winds are switched on when the surface rotation becomes equal or larger than the critical velocity. Impact on the ionising flux appears modest when compared to moderately-rotating models. Fast rotation favours, in models with initial masses above ~20Msol, the appearance of a very extended intermediate convective zone around the H-burning shell during the core He-burning phase. This shell has important consequences on the sizes of the He- and CO-cores and thus impacts the final fate of stars. Moreover, it has a strong impact on nucleosynthesis boosting the production of primary 14N. Fast initial rotation impacts significantly the chemical feedback of Population III stars. In this paper, we study asymptotic behaviors of continuous-time and discrete-time gradient flows of a ``lower-unbounded" convex function $f$ on a Hadamard manifold $M$, particularly, their convergence properties to the boundary $M^{\infty}$ at infinity of $M$. We establish a duality theorem that the infimum of the gradient-norm $\|\nabla f(x)\|$ of $f$ over $M$ is equal to the supremum of the negative of the recession function $f^{\infty}$ of $f$ over the boundary $M^{\infty}$, provided the infimum is positive. Further, the infimum and the supremum are obtained by the limits of the gradient flows of $f$, Our results feature convex-optimization ingredients of the moment-weight inequality for reductive group actions by Georgoulas, Robbin, and Salamon,and are applied to noncommutative optimization by B\"urgisser et al. FOCS 2019. We show that the gradient descent of the Kempf-Ness function for an unstable orbit converges to a 1-parameter subgroup in the Hilbert-Mumford criterion, and the associated moment-map sequence converges to the mimimum-norm point of the moment polytope. We show further refinements for operator scaling -- the left-right action on a matrix tuple $A= (A_1,A_2,\ldots,A_N)$. We characterize the gradient-flow limit of operator scaling via a vector-space generalization of the classical Dulmage-Mendelsohn decomposition of a bipartite graph. Also, for a special case of $N = 2$, we reveal that this limit determines the Kronecker canonical form of matrix pencils $s A_1+A_2$.

Quantum chemical calculations have attracted much attention as a practical application of quantum computing. Quantum computers can prepare superpositions of electronic states with various numbers of electrons on qubits. This special feature could be used to construct an efficient method for analyzing the structural variations of molecules and chemical reactions involving changes in molecular charge. The present work demonstrates a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm based on a cost function ($L_{cost}$) having the same form as the grand potential of the grand canonical ensemble of electrons. The chemical potential of the electrons ($w$) is used as an input to these VQE calculations, whereas the molecular charge is not specified in advance but rather is a physical quantity that results from the calculations. Calculations involving model systems are carried out to show the viability of this new approach. Calculations for typical electron-donating and electron-accepting molecules using this technique yielded cationic, neutral or anionic species depending on the value of $w$. Models representing the adsorption of water or ammonia on copper-based catalysts predicted that oxidation would be associated with such adsorption. The molecular structures in which such reactions occurred were found to be dependent on the catalyst model, the adsorbed molecular species, and the value of $w$. These results arise because the electronic state that gives the lowest $L_{cost}$ value depends on the value of $w$ and the molecular structure. This behaviour was successfully simulated by the present VQE calculations.

Dialogue datasets are crucial for deep learning-based task-oriented dialogue system research. While numerous English language multi-domain task-oriented dialogue datasets have been developed and contributed to significant advancements in task-oriented dialogue systems, such a dataset does not exist in Japanese, and research in this area is limited compared to that in English. In this study, towards the advancement of research and development of task-oriented dialogue systems in Japanese, we constructed JMultiWOZ, the first Japanese language large-scale multi-domain task-oriented dialogue dataset. Using JMultiWOZ, we evaluated the dialogue state tracking and response generation capabilities of the state-of-the-art methods on the existing major English benchmark dataset MultiWOZ2.2 and the latest large language model (LLM)-based methods. Our evaluation results demonstrated that JMultiWOZ provides a benchmark that is on par with MultiWOZ2.2. In addition, through evaluation experiments of interactive dialogues with the models and human participants, we identified limitations in the task completion capabilities of LLMs in Japanese., Comment: Accepted by LREC-COLING 2024

The magnetic ground state of single crystalline RuO$_2$ was investigated by the muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) experiment. The spin precession signal due to the spontaneous internal magnetic field $B_{\rm loc}$, which is expected in the magnetically ordered phase, was not observed in the temperature range 5--400~K. Muon sites were evaluated by first-principles calculations using dilute hydrogen simulating muon as pseudo-hydrogen, and $B_{\rm loc}$ was simulated for the antiferromagnetic (AFM) structures with a Ru magnetic moment $|{\bf m}_{\rm Ru}|\approx0.05\mu_\mathrm{B}$ suggested from diffraction experiments. As a result, the possibility was ruled out that muons are localized at sites where $B_{\rm loc}$ accidentally cancels. Conversely, assuming that the slow relaxation observed in $\mu$SR spectra was part of the precession signal, the upper limit for the magnitude of $|{\bf m}_{\rm Ru}|$ was estimated to be $4.8(2)\times10^{-4}\mu_{\rm B}$, which is significantly less than $0.05\mu_\mathrm{B}$. Thermal conductivity, a fundamental parameter characterizing thermal transport in solids, is typically determined by electron and phonon transport. Although other transport properties including electrical conductivity and thermoelectric conversion coefficients have material-specific values, it is known that thermal conductivity can be modulated artificially via phonon engineering techniques. Here, we demonstrate another way of artificially modulating the heat conduction in solids: magnonic thermal transport engineering. The time-domain thermoreflectance measurements using ferromagnetic metal/insulator junction systems reveal that the thermal conductivity of the ferromagnetic metals and interfacial thermal conductance vary significantly depending on the spatial distribution of nonequilibrium spin currents. Systematic measurements of the thermal transport properties with changing the boundary conditions for spin currents show that the observed thermal transport modulation stems from magnon origin. This observation unveils that magnons significantly contribute to the heat conduction even in ferromagnetic metals at room temperature, upsetting the conventional wisdom that the thermal conductivity mediated by magnons is very small in metals except at low temperatures. The magnonic thermal transport engineering offers a new principle and method for active thermal management.

Permanent magnets are used in various products and essential for human society. If omnipresent permanent magnets could directly convert heat into electricity, they would lead to innovative energy harvesting and thermal management technologies. However, achieving such "multifunctionality" has been difficult because of the poor thermoelectric performance of conventional magnets. Here, we develop a multifunctional composite magnet that enables giant transverse thermoelectric conversion. The developed composite material, comprising alternately and obliquely stacked SmCo$_{5}$/Bi$_{0.2}$Sb$_{1.8}$Te$_{3}$ multilayers, exhibits large remanent magnetization and coercivity as well as an excellent figure of merit of 0.22 for transverse thermoelectric conversion at room temperature owing to the optimized anisotropic composite structure and extremely low interfacial electrical and thermal resistances. While having versatile transverse geometry, the thermopile module based on these composite materials generates 204 mW at a temperature difference of 152 K. The corresponding power density normalized by heat transfer area and temperature gradient is not only record-high among the transverse thermoelectric modules but also comparable to that of the longitudinal thermoelectric modules including commercial products based on the Seebeck effect. We explore the evolution of massive stars (>8 solar masses) with 1-D models and present analytical fits to the masses and binding energies of the convective portions of their envelopes. These fits are given as functions of total mass, metallicity, and surface temperature (used as a proxy for evolutionary phase). They enable the application of the two-stage common envelope formalism (Hirai & Mandel 2022) in rapid binary population synthesis frameworks. We estimate that the degree of orbital hardening following common-envelope ejection spans 6 orders of magnitude and is a very strong function of the accretor mass, and, to a lesser extent, donor evolutionary phase., Comment: Minor changes (including to fits) to match version accepted for publication in ApJ

This study presents a measurement method for determining the figure of merit for transverse thermoelectric conversion ($ z_\mathrm{T}T $) in thin film forms. Leveraging the proposed methodology, we comprehensively investigate the transverse thermoelectric coefficient ($ S_\mathrm{T} $), in-plane electrical conductivity ($ \sigma_{yy} $), and out-of-plane thermal conductivity ($ \kappa_{xx} $) in epitaxial and polycrystalline Fe/Pt metallic multilayers. The $ \kappa_{xx} $ values of multilayers with a number of stacking repetitions ($ N $) of 200 are lower than those of FePt alloy films, indicating that the multilayer structure effectively contributes to the suppression of $ \kappa_{xx} $. $ z_\mathrm{T}T $ is found to increase with increasing $ N $, which remarkably reflects the $ N $-dependent enhancement of the $ S_\mathrm{T} $ values. Notably, $ S_\mathrm{T} $ and $ \sigma_{yy} $ are significantly larger in the epitaxial multilayers than those in the polycrystalline counterparts, whereas negligible differences in $ \kappa_{xx} $ are observed between the epitaxial and polycrystalline multilayers. This discrepancy in $ \sigma_{yy} $ and $ \kappa_{xx} $ with respect to crystal growth is due to the different degree of anisotropy in electron transport between epitaxial and polycrystalline multilayers, and epitaxial growth can lead to an enhancement of $ z_\mathrm{T}T $ in the multilayers. Accreting main-sequence stars expand significantly when the mass accretion timescale is much shorter than their thermal timescales. This occurs during mass transfer from an evolved giant star onto a main-sequence companion in a binary system, and is an important phase in the formation of compact binaries including X-ray binaries, cataclysmic variables, and gravitational-wave sources. In this study, we compute 1D stellar models of main-sequence accretors with different initial masses and accretion rates. The calculations are used to derive semi-analytical approximations to the maximum expansion radius. We assume that mass transfer remains fully conservative as long as the inflated accretor fits within its Roche lobe, leading stars to behave like hamsters, stuffing excess material behind their expanding cheeks. We suggest a physically motivated prescription for the mass growth of such "hamstars", which can be used to determine mass-transfer efficiency in rapid binary population synthesis models. With this prescription, we estimate that progenitors of high-mass X-ray binaries and gravitational-wave sources may have experienced highly non-conservative mass transfer. In contrast, for low-mass accretors, the accretion timescale can exceed the thermal timescale by a larger factor without causing significant radial expansion., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures.
