A major obstacle to understanding high-Tc cuprates is that superconductivity precludes observing normal-state properties at low temperatures. One prime example is the normal-state spin susceptibility: although its decrease upon cooling far above Tc typifies pseudogap behavior, its behavior at low temperatures is generally unknown. Here, our measurements in high magnetic fields expose the spin susceptibility of YBa2Cu3Oy down to low temperatures. Even though superconductivity is suppressed by the field, we uncover two thermally-activated contributions alongside a residual susceptibility at T=0 due to gapless excitations. We relate these two distinct gaps to short-range charge-density waves and to the formation of spin singlets similar to those found in certain quantum spin systems. These phenomena thus collectively contribute to the pseudogap in the spin susceptibility at low temperature, supplementing short-lived antiferromagnetism known to initiate pseudogap behavior at high temperatures. We therefore propose that the pseudogap should be regarded as a composite property.

We present nuclear magnetic (NMR) and qudrupole (NQR) resonance and magnetization data in the normal state of the topological crystalline superconductor LaNiGa$_2$. We find no evidence of magnetic fluctuations or enhanced paramagnetism. These results suggest that the time-reversal symmetry breaking previously reported in the superconducting state of this material is not driven by strong electron correlations., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We have performed $^{115}$In-NMR spectroscopy for Ni$_{2}$InSbO$_6$ with corundum-related crystal structure to reveal magnetic structures that develop in high magnetic fields. At low fields Ni$_{2}$InSbO$_6$ shows a helical magnetic order with a long wavelength because of its chiral and polar crystal structure. The field-induced magnetic state was not investigated by microscopic experiment because an extremely high magnetic field is required to modify the antiferromagnetically coupled helical structure. From the analysis of our $^{115}$In-NMR spectra obtained at high magnetic fields, we confirm that the canted antiferromagnetic structure appears in fields applied in the $[110]$ direction and the propagation vector of magnetic helix is rotated toward the field direction for fields in the $[001]$ direction. The mechanism of unconventional superconductivity, such as high-temperature-cuprate, Fe-based, and heavy-fermion superconductors, has been studied as a central issue in condensed-matter physics. Spin fluctuations, instead of phonons, are considered to be responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs, and many efforts have been made to confirm this mechanism experimentally. Although a qualitative consensus seems to have been obtained, experimental confirmation has not yet been achieved. This is owing to a lack of the quantitative comparison between theory and experiments. Here, we show a semi-quantitative comparison between the superconducting-transition temperature ($T_{\rm SC}$) and spin fluctuations derived from the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment on the ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe, in which the FM fluctuations and superconductivity are tunable by external fields. The enhancement and abrupt suppression of $T_{\rm SC}$ by applied fields, as well as the pressure variation of $T_{\rm SC}$ around the FM criticality are well understood by the change in the FM fluctuations on the basis of the single-band spin-triplet theoretical formalism. The present comparisons strongly support the theoretical formalism of spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, particularly in UCoGe., Comment: 10 pages, 8 pages. To be published in Phys. Rev. B

In order to identify the mechanism responsible for the formation of charge-density waves (CDW) in cuprate superconductors, it is important to understand which aspects of the CDW's microscopic structure are generic and which are material-dependent. Here, we show that, at the local scale probed by NMR, long-range CDW order in YBa2Cu3Oy is unidirectional with a commensurate period of three unit cells (lambda = 3b), implying that the incommensurability found in X-ray scattering is ensured by phase slips (discommensurations). Furthermore, NMR spectra reveal a predominant oxygen character of the CDW with an out-of-phase relationship between certain lattice sites but no specific signature of a secondary CDW with lambda = 6b associated with a putative pair-density wave. These results shed light on universal aspects of the cuprate CDW. In particular, its spatial profile appears to generically result from the interplay between an incommensurate tendency at long length scales, possibly related to properties of the Fermi surface, and local commensuration effects, due to electron-electron interactions or lock-in to the lattice., Comment: Original submission (revised version available upon request)

We present a $^{35}$Cl NMR study for spin $S=1/2$ perfect kagome antiferromagnet Ca-kapellasite (CaCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}\cdot$0.6H$_{2}$O) with a magnetic transition at $T^{\ast}=7.2$ K. The static magnetic structure in the ground state has been determined to be a chirality-ordered $Q=0$ state, which is selected by a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The low-energy magnetic excitations in the ordered state are investigated by the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate measurement. We detect a weakly temperature dependent contribution in the magnetic fluctuations perpendicular to the kagome plane in addition to the dispersive spin-wave contribution in the kagome plane. The low-energy magnetic excitations from the coplanar spin structure are attributed to the zero mode originating from the flat band in this kagome antiferromagnet., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The valence orders at $T_a=125$ K and $T_b=105$ K in the cubic compound YbPd have been investigated by $^{105}$Pd-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Significant decrease in the density of states at the Fermi energy below $T_a$ is evident from the measurement of nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, suggesting that the instabilities of Fermi surface are associated with the transitions. Moreover we observed the unusual evolution of low-energy fluctuations toward the valence transition at $T_a$ behind its drastic first-order nature. The structural transition accompanying the valence order may occur as a result of cooperative effect of Fermi surface and valence instabilities., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The value of the upper critical field Hc2, a fundamental characteristic of the superconducting state, has been subject to strong controversy in high-Tc copper-oxides. Since the issue has been tackled almost exclusively by macroscopic techniques so far, there is a clear need for local-probe measurements. Here, we use 17O NMR to measure the spin susceptibility $\chi_{spin}$ of the CuO2 planes at low temperature in charge ordered YBa2Cu3Oy. We find that $\chi_{spin}$ increases (most likely linearly) with magnetic field H and saturates above field values ranging from 20 to 40 T. This result is consistent with Hc2 values claimed by G. Grissonnanche et al. [Nat. Commun. 5, 3280 (2014)] and with the interpretation that the charge-density-wave (CDW) reduces Hc2 in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy. Furthermore, the absence of marked deviation in $\chi_{spin}(H)$ at the onset of long-range CDW order indicates that this Hc2 reduction and the Fermi-surface reconstruction are primarily rooted in the short-range CDW order already present in zero field, not in the field-induced long-range CDWorder. Above Hc2, the relatively low values of $\chi_{spin}$ at T=2 K show that the pseudogap is a ground-state property, independent of the superconducting gap., Comment: To appear

Observing how electronic states in solids react to a local symmetry breaking provides insight into their microscopic nature. A striking example is the formation of bound states when quasiparticles are scattered off defects. This is known to occur, under specific circumstances, in some metals and superconductors but not, in general, in the charge-density-wave (CDW) state. Here, we report the unforeseen observation of bound states when a magnetic field quenches superconductivity and induces long-range CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$. Bound states indeed produce an inhomogeneous pattern of the local density of states $N(E_F)$ that leads to a skewed distribution of Knight shifts which is detected here through an asymmetric profile of $^{17}$O NMR lines. We argue that the effect arises most likely from scattering off defects in the CDW state, which provides a novel case of disorder-induced bound states in a condensed-matter system and an insightful window into charge ordering in the cuprates.

We show that 63Cu NMR spectra place strong constraints on both the nature and the concentration of oxygen defects in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy. Systematic deviation from ideal ortho-II order is revealed by the presence of inequivalent Cu sites in either full or empty chains. The results can be explained by two kinds of defects: oxygen clustering into additional chains, or fragments thereof, most likely present at all concentrations (6.4

Meeting time is defined as the time for which two orbits approach each other within distance $\epsilon$ in phase space. We show that the distribution of the meeting time is exponential in $(p_1,...,p_k)$-Bernoulli systems. In the limit of $\epsilon\to0$, the distribution converges to exp(-\alpha\tau), where $\tau$ is the meeting time normalized by the average. The exponent is shown to be $\alpha=\sum_{l=1}^{k}p_l(1-p_l)$ for the Bernoulli systems., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Effects of non-resonant photoproductions arising from two different $\pi NN$ couplings are investigated in the $\gamma N\to\pi\pi N$ reaction. We find that the pseudoscalar (PS) $\pi NN$ coupling is generally preferable to the pseudovector (PV) $\pi NN$ coupling and particularly the total cross sections are successfully described by the model with the PS $\pi NN$ coupling. In order to see the difference between the two couplings, we also show the results of invariant mass spectra and helicity-dependent cross sections in various isospin channels calculated with the PS and PV couplings., Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures, minor changes and version to be published in Phys.Rev.C

We construct the formula for the photonuclear total absorption cross section using the projection method and the unitarity relation. Our treatment is very effective when interference effects in the absorption processes on a nucleon are strong. The disappearance of the peak around the position of the $D_{13}$ resonance in the nuclear photoabsorption can be explained with the cooperative effect of the interference in two-pion production processes,the Fermi motion, the collision broadenings of $\Delta$ and $N^*$, and the pion distortion in the nuclear medium.
