This paper investigates the global structures of periodic orbits that appear in Rayleigh–Bénard convection, which is modelled by a two-dimensional perturbed Hamiltonian model, by focusing upon resonance, symmetry and bifurcation of the periodic orbits. First, we show the global structures of periodic orbits in the extended phase space by numerically detecting the associated periodic points on the Poincaré section. Then, we illustrate how resonant periodic orbits appear and specifically clarify that there exist some symmetric properties of such resonant periodic orbits which are projected on the phase space; namely, the period m and the winding number n become odd when an m-periodic orbit is symmetric with respect to the horizontal and vertical centre lines of a cell. Furthermore, the global structures of bifurcations of periodic orbits are depicted when the amplitude ɛ of the perturbation is varied, since in experiments the amplitude of the oscillation of the convection gradually increases when the Rayleigh number is raised.

In this paper, we make experimental observations of the perturbed Rayleigh-Benard convection to detect the Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs), which correspond to the invariant manifolds of time-dependent systems and also to investigate the associated fluid transports by numerically integrating the two-dimensional velocity field obtained by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). We show the chaotic fluid transports that appear in the system, though some particles are transported almost periodically with time period T or 3T, where T = 17.3 s is the period of the perturbation. We finally propose a novel perturbed Hamiltonian system that enables to recover qualitatively global behaviors observed in experimental results and we also explore the periodic fluid transport that appear in the system.

Motivated by compartmental analysis in engineering and biophysical systems, we present a variational framework for the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of systems involving both distributed and discrete (finite dimensional) subsystems by specifically using the ideas of interconnected systems. We focus on the process of non-isothermal diffusion and show how the resulting form of the entropy equation naturally yields phenomenological expressions for the diffusion and entropy fluxes between two compartments, which results in generalized forms of Robin type interface conditions.

This paper numerically investigates unsteady behavior of cloud cavitation, in particular, to elucidate the induced shock wave emission. To do this, we consider a submerged water-jet injection into still water through a nozzle and make some numerical analysis of two-dimensional multiphase flows by Navier-Stokes equations. In our previous study [7], we have shown that twin vortices symmetrically appear in the injected water, which plays an essential role in performing the unsteady behavior of a cloud of bubbles. In this paper, we further illustrate the elementary process of the emission of the shock waves. First, we set up the mixture model of liquid and gas in Lagrangian description by the SPH method, together with the details on the treatment of boundary conditions. Second, we show the velocity fields of the multiphase flow to illustrate the inception, growth as well as the collapse of the cloud. In particular, we explain the mechanism of the collapse of the cloud in view of the motion of the twin vortices. Further, we investigate the pressure fields of the multiphase flow in order to demonstrate how the shock wave is emitted associated with the collapse of the cloud. Finally, we show that a small shock wave may be released prior to the main shock wave emission.

It is well known that Rayleigh-Benard convection with perturbations yields Lagrangian chaotic transport, and the mechanism of inducing chaotic transport has been numerically clarified by lobe dynamics [2]. On the other hand, the mechanism of such Lagrangian transport has not been enough studied by experiments. In our previous work [16], we made an experimental study to investigate the Lagrangian transport appeared in the two-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection by giving oscillation on the velocity fields and showed that there exist Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs) which correspond to invariant manifolds of non-autonomous systems. We also showed that the LCSs entangle with each other around cell boundaries. In this paper, we further explore the global invariant structures of the perturbed Rayleigh-Benard convection by clarifying the details on the LCSs and explain how the fluid transport obeys lobe dynamics. Finally, we propose a novel Hamiltonian model for the two-dimensional perturbed Rayleigh-Benard convection that enables to elucidate the global structures detected by experiments.

It is known that some fluid particles may be transported chaotically in Lagrangian description although the velocity field seems to be stable in Eulerian description. A typical example can be found in the system of two-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection with perturbed velocity fields, which has been investigated as a low dimensional mechanical model of fluid phenomena associated with natural convection in order to clarify the mechanism of fluid transport (see, for instance, [2]). In this study, we make an experimental study on the global structures of chaotic mixing appeared in the two-dimensional perturbed Rayleigh-Benard convection by analyzing Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs), which correspond to the invariant manifolds of time-dependent mechanical systems. We develop an apparatus to measure the velocity field by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and then show the LCSs which can be numerically detected from the experimental data by computing Finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) fields. Finally, we show the global structures of chaotic mixing appeared in the perturbed Rayleigh-Benard convection as well as the steady convection by experiments. In particular, we clarify how the LCSs are entangled with each other around the cell boundaries to carry out chaotic Lagrangian transports.

International audience; A variational formulation for nonequilibrium thermodynamics was recently proposed in \cite{GBYo2017a,GBYo2017b} for both discrete and continuum systems. This formulation extends the Hamilton principle of classical mechanics to include irreversible processes. In this paper, we show that this variational formulation yields a constructive and systematic way to derive from a unified perspective several bracket formulations for nonequilibrium thermodynamics proposed earlier in the literature, such as the single generator bracket and the double generator bracket. In the case of a linear relation between the thermodynamic fluxes and the thermodynamic forces, the metriplectic or GENERIC bracket is recovered. We also show how the processes of reduction by symmetry can be applied to these brackets. In the reduced setting, we also consider the case in which the coadjoint orbits are preserved and explain the link with double bracket dissipation. A similar development has been presented for continuum systems in \cite{ElGB2019} and applied to multicomponent fluids.

International audience; Dirac structures are geometric objects that generalize Poisson structures and presymplectic structures on manifolds. They naturally appear in the formulation of constrained mechanical systems and play an essential role in structuring a dynamical system through the energy flow between its subsystems and elements. In this paper, we show that the evolution equations for open thermodynamic systems, i.e., systems exchanging heat and matter with the exterior, admit an intrinsic formulation in terms of Dirac structures. We focus on simple systems, in which the thermodynamic state is described by a single entropy variable. A main difficulty compared to the case of closed systems lies in the explicit time dependence of the constraint associated to the entropy production. We overcome this issue by working with the geometric setting of time-dependent nonholonomic mechanics. We define three type of Dirac dynamical systems for the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of open systems, based either on the generalized energy, the Lagrangian, or the Hamiltonian. The variational formulations associated to the Dirac systems formulations are also presented.

Cavitation generates a portion of cavities called a cavitation cloud, which performs a collective unsteady motion of repeating the process of growth and collapse. In particular, it is considered that a high-pressure shock wave propagates associated with the collapse. In order to understand such unsteady behaviors of the cavitation cloud, much effort has been made for the numerical analysis of internal flows of the cavitation cloud. However, it is not clear how such a cavitation cloud can be identified as a physical entity nor how its unsteady collective motion can be elucidated in the context of the multiphase fluid flow. In this study, we make a two-dimensional numerical analysis of the multiphase flow of the submerged bubbly water jet injecting into still water through a nozzle. To model the bubbly water jet, we employ the mixture model of liquids and gases, and we utilize the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method for the numerical analysis of the unsteady flows in Lagrangian description. Finally, in order to clarify the unsteady behaviors of the cloud cavitation, we show how the cavitation cloud can be generated in the context of velocity fields in the multiphase flow and in particular, we clarify how twin vortices induced by the water jet play an essential role in the expansion and shrinkage of the cloud.

In this paper, we develop variational integrators for the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of simple closed systems. These integrators are obtained by a discretization of the Lagrangian variational formulation of nonequilibrium thermodynamics developed in \cite{GBYo2016a}, and thus extend the variational integrators of Lagrangian mechanics, to include irreversible processes. In the continuous setting, we derive the structure preserving property of the flow of such systems. This property is an extension of the symplectic property of the flow of the Euler-Lagrange equations. In the discrete setting, we show that the discrete flow solution of our numerical scheme verifies a discrete version of this property. We also present the regularity conditions which ensure the existence of the discrete flow. We finally illustrate our discrete variational schemes with the implementation of an example of a simple and closed system., Comment: 33 pages, 25 figures

A general variational formulation of the dissipative two-phase flows based on the extremization of the entropy production is developed. The entropy generation rate is written outside phase equilibrium by introducing interfacial contributions due to surface tension as well as heat and mass transfer between the two phases. Prigogine's theorem of minimum entropy production is used to estimate the steady state void fraction of the two-phase flow. The corresponding flow representation is investigated out of phase equilibrium for an annular flow, experiencing friction, surface tension effects, and interphase heat and mass transfer, within a diabatic channel. It is demonstrated that the present formulation generalises previous theories by capturing the effect of mass and heat fluxes variations, and that the widely accepted expression from Zivi represents a particular case obtained under certain simplifying assumptions. Finally, a first validation of the developed formulation of two-phase void fraction is presented for different flow conditions, heat flux from the external environment, and thermophysical properties of the refrigerant with reference to data obtained from a dedicated experimental apparatus adopting a capacitance sensor and from previous literature.

We present a variational formulation for nonequilibrium thermodynamics which extends the Hamilton principle of mechanics to include irreversible processes. The variational formulation is based on the introduction of the concept of thermodynamic displacement. This concept makes possible the definition of a nonlinear nonholonomic constraint given by the expression of the entropy production associated to the irreversible processes involved, to which is naturally associated a variational constraint to be used in the variational formulation. We consider both discrete (i.e., finite dimensional) and continuum systems and illustrate the variational formulation with the example of the piston problem and the heat conducting viscous fluid.

In this paper, it is shown that the evolution equations for nonequilibrium thermodynamics admit an intrinsic formulation in terms of Dirac structures, both on the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian settings. The Dirac structures are constructed on the Pontryagin bundle P = TQ ⊕ T ⁎ Q , where Q = Q × ℝ is the thermodynamic configuration manifold. In particular, it is illustrated how one can develop Dirac structures that include nonlinear nonholonomic constraints originated from the entropy production in each irreversible process. Lastly, we also present the induced Dirac structure on N = T ⁎ Q × ℝ together with the associated Lagrange-Dirac and Hamilton-Dirac dynamical formulations in analogy with nonholonomic mechanics.

In this paper, we show a low energy Earth–Moon transfer in the context of the Sun–Earth–Moon–spacecraft 4-body system. We consider the 4-body system as the coupled system of the Sun–Earth–spacecraft 3-body system perturbed by the Moon (which we call the Moon-perturbed system) and the Earth–Moon–spacecraft 3-body system perturbed by the Sun (which we call the Sun-perturbed system). In both perturbed systems, analogs of the stable and unstable manifolds are computed numerically by using the notion of Lagrangian coherent structures, wherein the stable and unstable manifolds play the role of separating orbits into transit and non-transit orbits. We obtain a family of non-transit orbits departing from a low Earth orbit in the Moon-perturbed system, and a family of transit orbits arriving into a low lunar orbit in the Sun-perturbed system. Finally, we show that we can construct a low energy transfer from the Earth to the Moon by choosing appropriate trajectories from both families and patching these trajectories with a maneuver.

In this paper, we survey our recent results on the variational formulation of nonequilibrium thermodynamics for the finite dimensional case of discrete systems as well as for the infinite dimensional case of continuum systems. Starting with the fundamental variational principle of classical mechanics, namely, Hamilton's principle, we show, with the help of thermodynamic systems with gradually increasing level complexity, how to systematically extend it to include irreversible processes. In the finite dimensional cases, we treat systems experiencing the irreversible processes of mechanical friction, heat and mass transfer, both in the adiabatically closed and in the open cases. On the continuum side, we illustrate our theory with the example of multicomponent Navier-Stokes-Fourier systems., 7 figures

International audience; Part I of this paper introduced a Lagrangian variational formulation for nonequilibrium thermodynamics of discrete systems. This variational formulation extends Hamilton's principle to allow the inclusion of irreversible processes in the dynamics. The irreversibility is encoded into a nonlinear nonholonomic constraint given by the expression of entropy production associated to all the irreversible processes involved. In Part II, we develop this formulation for the case of continuum systems by extending the setting of Part I to infinite dimensional nonholonomic Lagrangian systems. The variational formulation is naturally expressed in the material representation, while its spatial version is obtained via a nonholonomic Lagrangian reduction by symmetry. The theory is illustrated with the examples of a viscous heat conducting fluid and its multicomponent extension including chemical reactions and mass transfer.

The two-phase flow void fraction is a critical parameter for characterising the pressure drop as well as heat and mass transfer capability of the working fluid within thermal systems, the accurate estimation of which drives heat exchanger design and control optimisation. A semitheoretical expression for the void fraction of two-phase flows, also applicable to small-sized channels, is obtained from an analytical study based on the principle of minimum entropy production and the introduction of empirical coefficients to be fitted to experimental data available in the open literature. These coefficients embody the importance of the simplified physical terms of this formulation while recovering the accuracy loss owing to nonlinear phenomena, heat and mass transfer, and three-dimensional effects. By accounting for surface tension, this model generalises previous theories and describes the influence of smaller-sized channels in terms of the stable void fraction. This mathematical framework can be used to summarise data covering different refrigerants, channel diameters, and operating conditions.
