Search

The nature of the pseudogap and its relationship with superconductivity are one of the central issues of cuprate superconductors. Recently, a possible scenario has been proposed that the pseudogap state is a distinct phase characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking called “nematicity” based on transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements, where the symmetry breaking was observed below the pseudogap temperature T∗. Here, we report a temperature-dependent ARPES study of nematicity in slightly overdoped Bi1.7Pb0.5Sr1.9CaCu2O8+δ triggered by a uniaxial strain applied along one of the Cu–O bond directions. While the nematicity was enhanced in the pseudogap state as in the previous studies, it was suppressed in the superconducting state. These results indicate that the pseudogap state is characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking and that the nematicity may compete with superconductivity. Relationship between the nematicity and charge-density waves, both of which are observed in the pseudogap state, is discussed.

Electron systems with strong geometrical frustration have flat bands, and their unusual band dispersion is expected to induce a wide variety of physical properties. However, for such properties to emerge, the Fermi level must be pinned within the flat band. In this study, we performed first-principles calculations on the pyrochlore oxide Pb2Sb2O7 and theoretically clarified that the self-doping mechanism induces pinning of the Fermi level in the flat band in this system. Therefore, a very high density of states is realized at the Fermi level, and the ferromagnetic state becomes the ground state by a flat-band mechanism, even though the system does not contain any magnetic elements. This compound has the potential to become a new platform to project the properties of flat-band systems in the real world.

Recent studies in heavily hole-doped iron-based superconductor RbFe$_2$As$_2$ have suggested the emergence of novel electronic nematicity directed along the Fe-As direction, 45$^\circ$ rotated from the usual nematicity ubiquitously found in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and related materials. This motivates us to study the physical properties of Ba$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, details of which remain largely unexplored. Here we report on the normal-state charge transport in Ba$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ superconductors by using high-quality single crystals in the range of Rb concentration $0.14\le x \le 1.00$. From the systematic measurements of the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity $\rho(T)$, we find a signature of a deviation from the Fermi liquid behavior around the optimal composition, which does not seem related to the antiferromagnetic quantum criticality but has a potential link to hidden nematic quantum criticality. In addition, electron correlations derived from the coefficient of $T^2$ resistivity show a marked increase with Rb content near the heavily hole-doped end, consistent with the putative Mott physics near the $3d^5$ electron configuration in iron-based superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Enriching the material variation often contributes to the progress of materials science. We have discovered for the first time antiperovskite arsenide SrPd$_{3}$As and revealed a hidden structural and superconducting phase in Sr(Pd$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{3}$As. The Pd-rich samples (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.2) had the same non-centrosymmetric (NCS) tetragonal structure (a space group of $I41md$) as SrPd$_{3}$P. For the samples with 0.3 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7, a centrosymmetric (CS) tetragonal structure ($P4/nmm$) identical to that of SrPt$_{3}$P was found to appear, accompanied by superconductivity at a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) up to 3.7 K. In the samples synthesized with Pt-rich nominal compositions (0.8 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.0), Sr$_{2}$(Pd,Pt)$_{8-y}$As$_{1+y}$ with an intergrowth structure (CS-orthorhombic with Cmcm) was crystallized. The phase diagram obtained for Sr(Pd,Pt)$_{3}$As was analogous to that of (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P in that superconductivity ($T_\mathrm{c}$ $\geq$ 2 K) occurred in the CS phases induced by substitutions to the NCS phases. We investigated four single crystals of K-doped BaFe$$_2$$ 2 As$$_2$$ 2 (Ba-122), Ba$$_{1-x}$$ 1 - x K$$_x$$ x Fe$$_2$$ 2 As$$_2$$ 2 with $$x =$$ x = 0.29, 0.36, 0.40, and 0.51, using infrared spectroscopy. We explored a wide variety of doping levels, from under- to overdoped. We obtained the superfluid plasma frequencies ($$\Omega _{\textrm{sp}}$$ Ω sp ) and corresponding London penetration depths ($$\uplambda _{\textrm{L}}$$ λ L ) from the measured optical conductivity spectra. We also extracted the electron-boson spectral density (EBSD) functions using a two-parallel charge transport channel approach in the superconducting (SC) state. From the extracted EBSD functions, the maximum SC transition temperatures ($$T_c^{\textrm{Max}}$$ T c Max ) were determined using a generalized McMillan formula and the SC coherence lengths ($$\xi _{\textrm{SC}}$$ ξ SC ) were calculated using the timescales encoded in the EBSD functions and reported Fermi velocities. We identified some similarities and differences in the doping-dependent SC quantities between the K-doped Ba-122 and the hole-doped cuprates. We expect that the various SC quantities obtained across the wide doping range will provide helpful information for establishing the microscopic pairing mechanism in Fe-pnictide superconductors.

We performed a systematic study of the crystal structure, physical properties, and electronic structure of PbFCl-type intermetallic APX(A=Zr, Hf, X=S and Se) superconductor. We successfully synthesized single-phase polycrystalline samples for the Se substitution range of 0.4≤x≤0.8 in Zr(P2-xSex) using high pressure technique. On the other hand, S substitution range in Zr(P2-xSx) was narrow of 0.4≤x≤0.6, the S substitution range in Hf(P2-xSx) was narrow of x≈0.55, and the Se substitution range in Hf(P2-xSex) was also very narrow of x≈0.4. Zr(P2-xSex) exhibits a dome-like superconducting phase diagram for the substitution amount x. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is achieved at approximately x≈0.75 at which point the Tcis 6.3 K for Zr(P1.25Se0.75), 5.5 K for Hf(P1.30Se0.70), 5.0 K for Zr(P1.325S0.675), and 4.6 K for Hf(P1.50S0.50), respectively. Tcfor Zr(P1.25Se0.75) is increased from 6.3 K to 7.6 K by partially substituting a non-magnetic rare earth Sc atom for Zr. Single crystals of Zr(P1.25Se0.75) and partially substituted by Sc atom for Zr site of the ZrP2-xSexwere also grain grown using high pressure technique. Plate-like single crystal with approximate edge sizes of up to 500 × 300 × 20 μm3for (Zr0.50Sc0.50)PSe nominal composition was obtained. Tc= 8.36 K was reached and the Hc1//c-axis(0) and Hc1⊥c-axis(0) roughly determined are 0.0045 T and 0.0038 T, respectively. Assuming the type-II superconductivity in dirty limit, the Hc2//c-axis(0) value of 1.33 T was also obtained. In this presentation, the crystal growth and physical properties of this APX(A=Zr, Hf, X=S and Se) superconductor has reported.

We investigated the defect structures of polycrystalline CaKFe4As4 (CaK1144) superconductors by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The STEM studies revealed the presence of a one-layer CaFe2As2 (∼1 nm size) defect along the ab-plane, as observed in single crystalline CaK1144. Step-like CaFe2As2 defects are also observed. These nanoscale defects generate fine-sized stacking faults, a lattice mismatch, and stress field defects in the matrix of CaK1144 owing to the different sizes. Correlation of the defects in polycrystalline and single crystalline samples suggests that the defects type and their density depend on the synthesis conditions. A self-field critical current density (Jc) of 15.2 kA cm−2 was obtained at 5 K, and the curves were sustained above 30 K with a considerable Jc value of 1.4 kA cm−2. We investigated the relationship between the observed intrinsic defects and the behavior of the field dependence of Jc. The intrinsically intergrown planar defects, even in polycrystalline samples, are expected to be advantageous for various high-field applications of bulk CaK1144 superconductors.

Copper oxide high-TC superconductors possess a number of exotic orders that coexist with or are proximal to superconductivity. Quantum fluctuations associated with these orders may account for the unusual characteristics of the normal state, and possibly affect the superconductivity1–4. Yet, spectroscopic evidence for such quantum fluctuations remains elusive. Here, we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal spectroscopic evidence of fluctuations associated with a charge order5–14 in nearly optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. In the superconducting state, while the quasielastic charge order signal decreases with temperature, the interplay between charge order fluctuations and bond-stretching phonons in the form of a Fano-like interference increases, an observation that is incompatible with expectations for competing orders. Invoking general principles, we argue that this behaviour reflects the properties of a dissipative system near an order–disorder quantum critical point, where the dissipation varies with the opening of the pseudogap and superconducting gap at low temperatures, leading to the proliferation of quantum critical fluctuations, which melt charge order. X-ray scattering experiments show that the quantum fluctuations associated with charge order take a form that is incompatible with the idea of competition between charge order and superconductivity.

In this study, we succeeded in synthesizing new antiperovskite phosphides MPd3P (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) and discovered the appearance of a superconducting phase (0.17 ≤ x ≤ 0.55) in a solid solution (Ca1-xSrx)Pd3P. Three perovskite-related crystal structures were identified in (Ca1-xSrx)Pd3P, and a phase diagram was built on the basis of experimental results. The first phase transition from centrosymmetric (Pnma) to noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic (Aba2) occurred in CaPd3P near room temperature. The phase transition temperature decreased as Ca2+ was replaced with a larger-sized isovalent Sr2+. Bulk superconductivity at a critical temperature (Tc) of approximately 3.5 K was observed in a range of x = 0.17-0.55; this was associated with the centrosymmetric orthorhombic phase. Thereafter, a noncentrosymmetric tetragonal phase (I41md) remained stable for 0.6 ≤ x ≤ 1.0, and superconductivity was significantly suppressed as samples with x = 0.75 and 1.0 showed Tc values as low as 0.32 K and 57 mK, respectively. For further substitution with a larger-sized isovalent Ba2+, namely, (Sr1-yBay)Pd3P, the tetragonal phase continued throughout the composition range. BaPd3P no longer showed superconductivity down to 20 mK. Since the inversion symmetry of structure and superconductivity can be precisely controlled in (Ca1-xSrx)Pd3P, this material may offer a unique opportunity to study the relationship between inversion symmetry and superconductivity.

Charge density waves (CDWs) are ubiquitous in under-doped cuprate superconductors. As a modulation of the valence electron density, CDWs in hole-doped cuprates possess both Cu-3d and O-2p orbital character owing to the strong hybridization of these orbitals near the Fermi level. Here, we investigate under-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.4}$La$_{0.6}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and find that a short-range CDW exists at both Cu and O sublattices in the copper-oxide (CuO2) planes with a comparable periodicity and correlation length. Furthermore, we uncover bond-stretching and bond-buckling phonon anomalies concomitant to the CDWs. Comparing to slightly over-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.8}$La$_{0.2}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$, where neither CDWs nor phonon anomalies appear, we highlight that a sharp intensity anomaly is induced in the proximity of the CDW wavevector (QCDW) for the bond-buckling phonon, in concert with the diffused intensity enhancement of the bond-stretching phonon at wavevectors much greater than QCDW. One of the most significant issues for superconductivity is clarifying the momentum-dependent superconducting gap Δ(\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\boldsymbol{k}}$$\end{document}k), which is closely related to the pairing mechanism. To elucidate the gap structure, it is essential to investigate Δ(\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\boldsymbol{k}}$$\end{document}k) in as many different physical quantities as possible and to crosscheck the results obtained in different methods with each other. In this paper, we report a combinatorial investigation of the superfluid density and the flux-flow resistivity of iron-pnictide superconductors; LiFeAs and BaFe2(As1−xPx)2 (x = 0.3, 0.45). We evaluated Δ(\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\boldsymbol{k}}$$\end{document}k) by fitting these two-independent quantities with a two-band model simultaneously. The obtained Δ(\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\boldsymbol{k}}$$\end{document}k) are consistent with the results observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning-tunneling spectroscopy (STS) studies. We believe our approach is a powerful method for investigating Δ(\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\boldsymbol{k}}$$\end{document}k) because it does not require a sample with clean surface unlike ARPES and STS experiments, or a rotational magnetic-field system for direct measurements of the angular dependence of thermodynamic quantities.

Spin-orbit coupling emerging out of a material's global inversion symmetry breaking has been long known to act as a pair breaking mechanism to the superconducting order parameter. However, when spin-orbit coupling emerges from local inversion symmetry breaking, an unexpected coexistence with superconductivity might occur. Although lattice driven local symmetry breaking is intrinsic to a variety of unconventional superconductors, little is known about its close connection to spin-orbit coupling, and how the combination of the two can impact electronic properties and the microscopic classification of the order parameter. By using high-resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we reveal the presence of a universal momentum-dependent spin texture throughout the hole-doped side of the cuprate phase diagram for the Bi-based family, which becomes negligible on the electron-doped side. We attribute this spin asymmetry to local inversion symmetry breaking induced by local distortions of the CuO octahedra, revealing an interplay between spin-orbit coupling and lattice symmetry. The implication of this connection in steering the ground state properties of cuprate superconductors is discussed, together with the intriguing possibility that it might provide the long missing link to explain the complexity and asymmetry of the cuprate phase diagram.

In conventional superconductors, the phase transition into a zero-resistance and perfectly diamagnetic state is accompanied by a jump in the specific heat and the opening of a spectral gap(1). In the high-transition-temperature (high-T-c) cuprates, although the transport, magnetic and thermodynamic signatures of T-c have been known since the 1980s(2), the spectroscopic singularity associated with the transition remains unknown. Here we resolve this long-standing puzzle with a high-precision angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on overdoped (Bi,Pb)(2)Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (Bi2212). We first probe the momentum-resolved electronic specific heat via spectroscopy and reproduce the specific heat peak at T-c, completing the missing link for a holistic description of superconductivity. Then, by studying the full momentum, energy and temperature evolution of the spectra, we reveal that this thermodynamic anomaly arises from the singular growth of in-gap spectral intensity across T-c. Furthermore, we observe that the temperature evolution of in-gap intensity is highly anisotropic in the momentum space, and the gap itself obeys both the d-wave functional form and particle-hole symmetry. These findings support the scenario that the superconducting transition is driven by phase fluctuations. They also serve as an anchor point for understanding the Fermi arc and pseudogap phenomena in underdoped cuprates.

We performed an optical spectroscopy study on single crystals of Pr$_{0.85}$LaCe$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ (PLCCO) to revisit the electron-hole asymmetry, which has been understood as a fundamental property of cuprates. Four differently annealed samples - as-grown, reduced, optimally oxygenated, and over-oxygenated samples - were prepared, which have superconducting transition temperatures, $T_c$ = 0, 15, 24, and 18 K, respectively. We observed that low-energy quasiparticle spectral weights of all the PLCCO samples are significantly small in comparison with those of other electron-doped cuprate families. Instead, they are rather close to those of hole-doped counterpart La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). Accordingly, estimated effective carrier numbers per Cu atom ($N_{\mathrm{eff}}$/Cu) of superconducting samples are also considerably small, despite their relatively high critical temperatures. Complementary photoemission study reveals that the low-energy quasiparticle spectral weight of PLCCO is much smaller than that of Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ (NCCO), consistent with the optical results. Our observations demonstrate that PLCCO provides the electron-hole symmetry in quasiparticle spectral weight, and highlight the importance of Cu3$d$-O2$p$ hybridization to understand the low-energy spectral weight transfer in doped cuprates., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Two contradictory phase diagrams have dominated the literature of high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. Does the pseudogap line cross the superconducting $T_c$-dome or not? To answer, we have revisited the experimental magnetic susceptibility and knight shift of four different compounds, La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_2$O$_8$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$, and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$, as a function of temperature and doping. The susceptibility can be described by the same function for all materials, having a magnetic and an electronic contributions. The former is the 2D antiferromagnetic (AF) square lattice response, with a characteristic temperature of magnetic correlations $T_{max}$. The latter is the `Pauli' term, revealing the gap opening in the electronic density of states at the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. From precise fits of the data, we find that $T_{max}(p)$ decreases linearly as a function of doping ($p$) over a wide range, but saturates abruptly in the overdoped regime. Concomitantly, $T^*(p)$ is {\it linear and tangent} to the dome, either crossing or approaching $T_{max}(p)$ at the top of the dome, indicating a qualitative change of behavior from underdoped to overdoped regimes. Contrary to the idea that the pseudogap terminates just above optimal doping, our analysis suggests that the gap exists throughout the phase diagram. It is consistent with a pseudogap due to hole pairs, or `pairons', above $T_c$. We conclude that $T_{max}$, reflecting the AF magnetic correlations, has often been misinterpreted as the pseudogap temperature $T^*$., Comment: Solid State Communications (in press, February 2022)

Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) have a variety of functions due to their rich material variations, and thus,innovative methods for their synthesis are desired for practical applications. We have discovered that Na has a catalytic property that dramatically accelerates the formation of GICs. We demonstrate that LiC6n (n = 1, 2), KC8, KC12n (n = 2, 3, 4), and NaCx are synthesized simply by mixing alkali metals and graphite powder with Na at room temperature (~25 {\deg}C), and AEC6 (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba) are synthesized by heating Na-added reagents at 250 {\deg}C only for a few hours. The NaCx, formed by the mixing of C and Na, is understood to act as a reaction intermediate for a catalyst, thereby accelerating the formation of GICs by lowering the activation energy of intercalation. The Na-catalyzed method, which enables the rapid and mass synthesis of homogeneous GIC samples in a significantly simpler manner than conventional methods, is anticipated to stimulate research and development for GIC applications., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We report the effects of low-temperature postannealing on the structural and superconducting properties of the recently discovered Ca-free double-layered cuprate, Sr$_2$SrCu$_2$O$_{4+y}$F$_{2-y}$. Although the as-synthesized sample prepared under high pressure has a tetragonal structure with a rock-salt-type blocking layer (the so-called $T$-phase), we found that the symmetry of the structure lowered to that of an orthorhombic system when annealed with CuF$_2$. The structural refinements reveal that such a topochemical reaction leads not only to the removal of excess O$^{2-}$ from the apical site but also to the intercalation of extra F$^-$ into the interstitial site. The orthorhombic phase exhibits bulk superconductivity at a critical temperature of 107 K, which is significantly higher than that of the $T$-phase ($\sim$50 K). Meanwhile, the $T$-phase turns into another structure possessing a fluorite-type blocking layer without apical fluorine (known as the $T^\prime$-phase) by annealing without CuF$_2$. Density functional theory calculations show that the $T^\prime$-phase is more stable than the $T$-phase. This is the first report on the formation of a $T^\prime$-type double-layered cuprate. An unidentified quantum fluid designated the pseudogap (PG) phase is produced by electron-density depletion in the CuO2 antiferromagnetic insulator. Current theories suggest that the PG phase may be a pair density wave (PDW) state characterized by a spatially modulating density of electron pairs. By studying strongly underdoped Bi2Sr2CaDyCu2O8 at hole-density ~0.08 in the superconductive phase, we detect the 8a0-periodic \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\Delta }_{{{{{{\rm{P}}}}}}}({{{{{\boldsymbol{r}}}}}})$$\end{document}ΔP(r) modulations signifying a PDW coexisting with superconductivity. Then, by visualizing the temperature dependence of this electronic structure from the superconducting into the pseudogap phase, we find the evolution of the scattering interference signature \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\Lambda ({{{{{\boldsymbol{q}}}}}})$$\end{document}Λ(q) that is predicted specifically for the temperature dependence of an 8a0-periodic PDW. These observations are consistent with theory for the transition from a PDW state coexisting with d-wave superconductivity to a pure PDW state in the Bi2Sr2CaDyCu2O8 pseudogap phase., The pseudogap phase in cuprate superconductors is predicted to be a pair density wave state (PDW) but experimental evidence has been lacking. Here, the authors detect the temperature evolution of energy gap modulations and scattering interference signature suggesting the Bi2Sr2CaDyCu2O8 pseudogap phase contains a PDW.

Magnetic superconductors are specific materials exhibiting two antagonistic phenomena, superconductivity and magnetism, whose mutual interaction induces various emergent phenomena, such as the reentrant superconducting transition associated with the suppression of superconductivity around the magnetic transition temperature (Tm), highlighting the impact of magnetism on superconductivity. In this study, we report the experimental observation of the ferromagnetic order induced by superconducting vortices in the high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) magnetic superconductor EuRbFe4As4. Although the ground state of the Eu2+ moments in EuRbFe4As4 is helimagnetism below Tm, neutron diffraction and magnetization experiments show a ferromagnetic hysteresis of the Eu2+ spin alignment. We demonstrate that the direction of the Eu2+ moments is dominated by the distribution of pinned vortices based on the critical state model. Electronic nematicity, a correlated state that spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry, is observed in several layered quantum materials. In contrast to their liquid-crystal counterparts, the nematic director cannot usually point in an arbitrary direction (XY nematics), but is locked by the crystal to discrete directions (Ising nematics), resulting in strongly anisotropic fluctuations above the transition. Here, we report on the observation of nearly isotropic XY-nematic fluctuations, via elastoresistance measurements, in hole-doped Ba1-x Rb x Fe2As2 iron-based superconductors. While for [Formula: see text], the nematic director points along the in-plane diagonals of the tetragonal lattice, for [Formula: see text], it points along the horizontal and vertical axes. Remarkably, for intermediate doping, the susceptibilities of these two symmetry-irreducible nematic channels display comparable Curie-Weiss behavior, thus revealing a nearly XY-nematic state. This opens a route to assess this elusive electronic quantum liquid-crystalline state.

Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ over a wide range of doping levels, we present a universal form for the non-Fermi liquid electronic interactions in the nodal direction in the exotic normal state phase. It is described by a continuously varying power law exponent versus energy and temperature (hence named a Power Law Liquid or PLL), which with doping varies smoothly from a quadratic Fermi Liquid in the overdoped regime, to a linear Marginal Fermi Liquid at optimal doping, to a non-quasiparticle non-Fermi Liquid in the underdoped regime. The coupling strength is essentially constant across all regimes and is consistent with Planckian dissipation. Using the extracted PLL parameters we reproduce the experimental optics and resistivity over a wide range of doping and normal-state temperature values, including the T* pseudogap temperature scale observed in the resistivity curves. This breaks the direct link to the pseudogapping of antinodal spectral weight observed at similar temperature scales and gives an alternative direction for searches of the microscopic mechanism., The normal state of hole-doped, high-temperature superconductors is a currently-unexplained "strange metal" with exotic electronic behaviour. Here, the authors show that a doping-dependent power law ansatz for the electronic scattering phenomenologically captures ARPES, transport and optics observations.

Improvement of the critical current density (Jc) of superconducting wires/tapes is one of the key issues in the field of superconductivity applications. Here we report the fabrication of a silver-sheathed Ba1−xNaxFe2As2 (BaNa-122) superconducting tape by using a powder-in-tube technique and its superconducting properties, in particular transport Jc, as well as the tape-core texture. The optimally-doped BaNa-122 tape with Na concentration x = 0.4 exhibits the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of 33.7 K and high transport Jc of 4 × 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K in a magnetic field of 4 T. Patterns of x-ray diffraction for the superconducting core show that the degree of c-axis orientation is significantly enhanced through the tape fabrication process. The tendency of c-axis orientation is advantageous for achieving higher Jc, suggesting the high potential of BaNa-122 for superconducting wire/tape applications.

Essentials of the scientific discovery process have remained largely unchanged for centuries: systematic human observation of natural phenomena is used to form hypotheses that, when validated through experimentation, are generalized into established scientific theory. Today, however, we face major challenges because automated instrumentation and large-scale data acquisition are generating data sets of such volume and complexity as to defy human analysis. Radically different scientific approaches are needed, with machine learning (ML) showing great promise, not least for materials science research. Hence, given recent advances in ML analysis of synthetic data representing electronic quantum matter (EQM), the next challenge is for ML to engage equivalently with experimental data. For example, atomic-scale visualization of EQM yields arrays of complex electronic structure images, that frequently elude effective analyses. Here we report development and training of an array of artificial neural networks (ANN) designed to recognize different types of hypothesized order hidden in EQM image-arrays. These ANNs are used to analyze an experimentally-derived EQM image archive from carrier-doped cuprate Mott insulators. Throughout these noisy and complex data, the ANNs discover the existence of a lattice-commensurate, four-unit-cell periodic, translational-symmetry-breaking EQM state. Further, the ANNs find these phenomena to be unidirectional, revealing a coincident nematic EQM state. Alkali metal dosing (AMD) has been widely used as a way to control doping without chemical substitution. This technique, in combination with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), often provides an opportunity to observe unexpected phenomena. However, the amount of transferred charge and the corresponding change in the electronic structure vary significantly depending on the material. Here, we report study on the correlation between the sample work function and alkali metal induced electronic structure change for three iron-based superconductors: FeSe, Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and NaFeAs which share a similar Fermi surface topology. Electronic structure change upon monolayer of alkali metal dosing and the sample work function were measured by ARPES. Our results show that the degree of electronic structure change is proportional to the difference between the work function of the sample and Mulliken's absolute electronegativity of the dosed alkali metal. This finding provides a possible way to estimate the AMD induced electronic structure change., 4 pages

High-temperature superconducting cuprates exhibit an intriguing phenomenology for the low-energy elementary excitations. In particular, an unconventional temperature dependence of the coherent spectral weight (CSW) has been observed in the superconducting phase by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), both at the antinode where the d-wave paring gap is maximum, as well as along the gapless nodal direction. Here, we combine equilibrium and time-resolved ARPES to track the temperature dependent meltdown of the nodal CSW in Bi-based cuprates with unprecedented sensitivity. We find the nodal suppression of CSW upon increasing temperature to be ubiquitous across single- and double-layer Bi cuprates, and uncorrelated to superconducting and pseudogap onset temperatures. We quantitatively model both the lineshape of the nodal spectral features and the anomalous suppression of CSW within the Fermi-Liquid framework, establishing the key role played by the normal state electrodynamics in the description of nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; Supplementary Materials available upon request

Superconductors comprising 5d transition metals of Ir and Pt have been widely explored because they have the potential of unique superconductivity caused by the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI). We successfully synthesized BaIr2, the last Laves phase remaining unsynthesized in the MgCu2-type AM2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; M = Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt). BaIr2 was crystallized at 925 C under a pressure of 3.3 GPa via a solid-state reaction between Ba and Ir powders; it was found to have the longest a-lattice constant of 8.038(1) A among AM2. BaIr2 exhibited bulk superconductivity at a transition temperature (Tc) of 2.7 K. BaIr2 was found to have a type-II superconductor with an upper critical field of 67.7 kOe, which was above the Pauli paramagnetic limit (50 kOe). The electron-phonon coupling constant and normalized specific heat jump were measured to be 0.63 and 1.2, respectively, indicating that BaIr2 is a weak-coupling superconductor. The electronic-structure calculations for BaIr2 revealed that the Ir-5d states are dominant at the Fermi energy (EF) and the density of states at the EF is strongly affected by SOI as in the case of CaIr2 and SrIr2., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The enhancement of a critical current density (J c) of REBa2Cu3O7-δ (REBCO/YBCO, where RE=rare earth elements and Y) bulk superconductors can be achieved via dispersing normal-conductive RE2BaCuO5 (Y211) particles and other defects which are of nano-metric size in the superconducting matrix. Recently, we demonstrated the integration of high-energy ultrasonic irradiation for fabricating high quality YBCO superconductors which effectively improved J c and trapped fields. In the present work, we investigated the effect of 30 mol.% of Y211 particle produced via high-energy ultrasonication irradiation on the growth and superconducting properties of top-seeded melt grown bulk YBCO single grains. Ultrasonic power of 450 W was employed for 30 minutes to create the sharp-edged, individual and nano-meter sized Y211 phase particles. Systematic isothermal experiments were conducted at various temperatures from 1005 °C − 980 °C. The growth of YBCO grain from a single crystalline NdBCO seed was initiated at 1000 °C and as the isothermal temperature decreased the growth area increased due to the improved peritectic reaction. The field dependence of J c was improved when the under-cooling isothermal temperature decreased. The present method is reliable, cost-effective, and free from any chemical contamination.

We report on top-seeded melt growth of GdBa2Cu3O7-δ (GdBCO) bulks added by sharp edged Gd2BaCuO5 nanoparticles (Gd211U) refined by ultrasonication. GdBCO bulks mixed with 30 mol.% of Gd211U were examined to be grown isothermally at different temperatures in a range of 1015 °C−1035 °C using a top-seeded melt growth technique. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that all samples become superconducting and especially samples grown at 1020°C and 1025°C have a maximum superconducting transition temperature (T c) of 94.5 K. The critical current density (J c) obtained from magnetic hysteresis loops for magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis is up to 65100 A/cm2 (the self-field at 77 K) for a sample grown at 1025 °C, while J c of a GdBCO bulk with conventional Gd211 particles grown at 1025 °C for comparison is 29000 A/cm2 (the self-field at 77 K).
