Introduction: Suicide loss survivors can provide information not otherwise available about the circumstances preceding a suicide. In this study, we analyzed interview data from suicide loss survivors collected as part of a psychological autopsy study of U.S. Army soldiers., Methods: Next-of-kin (NOK) (n = 61) and Army supervisors (SUP) (n = 107) of suicide decedents (n = 135) who had died in the last 2-3 months answered open-ended questions about suicide risk factors, ideas for improving suicide prevention, and the impact of the suicide. Responses were coded using conventional content analysis methods to identify common themes., Results: Many NOK (30%) and SUP (50%) did not observe any signs of risk preceding the soldier's suicide. The most common idea regarding suicide prevention from SUP was that the suicide was inevitable, whereas NOK were more likely to emphasize the importance of increasing mental health treatment and reducing stigma. Both NOK and SUP reported negative effects of the suicide, but SUP reported some positive effects (e.g., increased unit connectedness)., Conclusions: Results underscore the challenges of using informants to identify soldiers at high risk of suicide, given many respondents did not observe any warning signs. Findings also highlight attitudinal barriers present in the military that, if targeted, may increase soldiers' help-seeking and willingness to disclose their risk., (© 2024 American Association of Suicidology.)

Theoretical and empirical research lead to conflicting perspectives on whether youth from low-income backgrounds are likely to have access to lives of purpose. To explore this issue, this study used data collected during the 2016-2017 academic year from a sample of Southern California youth. Findings suggest (a) youth from low-income communities are as likely as youth from middle-income communities to report leading lives of purpose; (b) purpose among low-income youth is associated with many of the same indicators of positive development as it is among middle-income youth; and (c) youth from low-income backgrounds encounter personal hardships that, in the presence of familial support and other developmental assets, can inspire purpose. Regulator of G-protein signaling protein (RGS)-2 is a modulator of anxiety and dysregulation of oxidative stress is implicated in anxiety. Also, RGS2 expression is reported to be induced by oxidative stress. Thus, if oxidative stress induces RGS2 expression and lack of RGS2 causes anxiety, then mechanisms that link RGS2 and oxidative stress potentially critical to anxiety must be revealed. Our study is the first to suggest role of RGS2 in regulation of enzymes involved in antioxidant defense namely glyoxalase-1 and glutathione reductase-1 via activation of p38 MAPK and PKC pathways in an Sp-1 dependent manner., (Published by Elsevier B.V.)

G-protein coupled receptor kinase 3 (GRK3) mediates desensitization of alpha(2)-adrenergic (alpha(2)-AR) and CRF(1) receptors. CRF(1) receptors, alpha(2)-AR and GRK3, are localized to the primary source of noradrenergic inputs to higher brain centers critical in both the response to stress and the development of depression, namely, locus coeruleus (LC). This study utilizing CATH.a cells (derived from the LC), demonstrates for the first time, that the stress hormone, CRF selectively up-regulates GRK3 expression via an ERK1/2-mediated mechanism accompanied by the activation of Sp-1 and Ap-2 transcription factors. This observation has important implications for the regulation of stress signaling in the brain.
