15. Effect of extended outdoor exposure on surface quality and mechanical properties of Malaysian hardwood species.

Abstract

Tropical hardwoods, often used as outdoor wood products, are frequently exposed to the hot and humid conditions in Malaysia. This has led to many studies attempting to develop suitable coatings and establishing maintenance cycles so that product service life can be extended. The objective of this study was to evaluate the surface quality and mechanical properties of both uncoated and coated three Malaysian hardwood species, namely dark red meranti (Shorea spp.), keruing (Dipterocarpus spp.) and keranji (Dialium spp.) after exposure to outdoor condition at different time spans. Surface quality of uncoated and coated with exterior transparent alkyd finished of the samples was evaluated visually as well as employing a profilometer-type equipment. Bending characteristics of outdoor exposed samples were also tested. The results showed that the surface of all coated samples degraded after 48 months of exposure. In addition, after 48 months of outdoor exposure, the modulus of rupture (MOR) values for dark red meranti, keruing and keranji decreased by more than 15% while the modulus of elasticity (MOE) values decreased by approximately 20% for both uncoated and coated samples. Generally, refinishing and maintenance should be performed within 2 years, and the cost of the maintenance should be calculated to ensure that the condition of the wood remains suitable for use as a building material in Malaysia's climate conditions. Abstract

Soy protein is known for its eco-friendly, sustainable, and biodegradable qualities that are likely used as raw material in producing bioadhesive. However, soy protein-based adhesive are lacking in terms of adhesive strength and water-resistance compared to commercial formaldehyde-based adhesives such as phenol and urea-formaldehyde resin. Therefore, continuous research has been done to improve adhesive performance. This can be done via physical or modification methods, including the usage of cross-linking agents, structural modification, enzymatic modification, and the addition of additives. This review will cover these modification methods that give significant enhancement to the water-resistance and adhesive strength of soy protein-based adhesives. Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the impregnation process of pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) on roughness parameters of the surface processed on a frame sawing. The samples were dried and impregnated using a commercial procedure by a local company. The touch method with the use of measuring stylus (pin) was employed to determine of surface roughness of the samples considering parameters, namely, arithmetical mean roughness value (Ra), total height of the roughness profile (Rt), maximum height of roughness profile (Rz) and root-mean-square roughness (Rq). All measured values of the analysed surface roughness parameters were normalised by the raw density of wood in order to eliminate the effect of differences in wood density and moisture content of the tested samples of impregnated and non-impregnated pine. Generally, no effect of feed per tooth was observed for the analysed values of fz1 = 0.11 mm and fz2 = 0.22 mm on the surface roughness parameters. Only for the parameter Rq of impregnated wood was a significant effect of feed per tooth observed. The effect of the pine wood impregnation process on all analysed surface roughness parameters was observed for both analysed feeds per tooth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The objective of this work was to search for an optimal wavelength selection for near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for quality measurement of Nam-Dokmai mangoes. In this study, NIR spectroscopy has been applied to grading management systems for commercial mangoes export. Near infrared spectra were collected using a near infrared instrument incorporating a wavelength region of 860-1760 nm. Genetic algorithm (GA) and successive projections algorithms (SPA) was employed for selecting the spectra wavelengths. The selected wavelengths were also used to generate the prediction models via partial least square (PLS) regression. The optimal pretreatment was obtained from the second derivative. The model of full wavelengths rendered effective the best performance with r2 of 0.66-0.74, RMSEP of 0.72-0.80 °Brix and RPD equal to 1.8-2.0. The SPA-PLS resulted in values of r2, RMSEP and RPD were 0.43-0.70, 0.77-1.01°Brix and 1.4-1.9, respectively. Meanwhile, the result of GA-PLS performed efficiency with r2, RMSEP and RPD were 0.52-0.72, 0.74-0.96°Brix and 1.5-1.9, respectively. The outcome, the GA-PLS model (50 variables) is suitable for use in the measuring soluble solids content (SSC) in mangoes. This model could be used as screening purpose. It also was not different significantly when compared to the best model. Hence, authors suggested that the prediction model by GA-PLS with 50 variables can be effectively used for evaluating SSC in mangoes.

Abstract

The large amount of coconut residue produced by coconut producers and manufacturers has harmed the environment. Coconut waste was converted into coconut residue flour (CRF), which was used as a reinforcing material for biodegradable packaging development in order to decrease waste problems and increase the value of the circular economy. The effects of CRF content, ranging from 0 to 25 wt%, on the properties of foam-type composites made from cassava starch containing 10 wt% spent coffee grounds (SCG) were investigated. Flexural strength was raised to 2.53 MPa by adding CRF at 25 wt%. A thicker outer layer and denser foam structure were observed when the proportion of CRF in the samples was increased. The density of all samples was found to be 0.34-0.41 g/cm3, which was in the same range as other starch-based foam composites. The water resistance of the samples was marginally enhanced by adding more CRF. The water absorption index (WAI) and water solubility index (WSI) of the samples were in the ranges of 5.10-8.95% and 2.16-5.05%, respectively. The soil burial test at 30 days showed that the weight loss of the samples increased from 74.88 to 100% with increasing CRF due to the high susceptibility of CRF to microbial spoilage. Based on the findings of this study, CRF could be a promising and environmentally friendly reinforcing material for biodegradable foam composites that could be used to replace expanded polystyrene in dry food packaging.
