6. Drinking Bordeaux in the 'new' Hong Kong : exploring changing identities through alcohol consumption

Abstract

Hong Kong has seen a significant increase in wine consumption since the withdrawal of wine tax in February 2008, and the Special Administrative Region (SAR) has now become Asia’s wine-trading hub. However, while alcohol consumption is a recognised academic subject in the fields of anthropology, geography and cultural studies, current research offers limited information on Hong Kong’s wine industry, the reasons behind the popularisation of wine, or how consumers drink wine. This thesis investigates the ways in which people of different ethnic and social backgrounds residing in Hong Kong consume alcohol. It is argued that some Hong Kong citizens consume alcohol in various ways to construct a postcolonial identity. This finding was uncovered through the exploration of the development of Hong Kong’s wine industry; the way that people practise wine consumption; how alcohol is consumed at home, work and in leisure spaces; how liquid modern identity is constructed in drinking spaces through experiential consumption. This thesis argues that Hong Kong citizens are currently experiencing a phase of uncertain social and cultural changes following the 1997 handover. They find themselves in a transitory moment as they are moving away from the old Hong Kong, which was ruled by the British government, to the new Hong Kong, which is slowly being transformed by the Beijing government. Wine consumption has increased in popularity because it enables Hong Kong’s citizens to display cultural capital while simultaneously distancing themselves from mainland Chinese society. This research was carried out using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, including statistical analysis, ethnography, elite interviews and focus groups to develop frameworks to investigate and theorise Hong Kong’s culture and society through alcohol consumption. The methodological frameworks, theoretical debates and empirical findings contribute to wider knowledge in Asian studies, drinking cultures and geographies of consumption.

7. From micro- to nano-segregation: policy-led vertical urbanism in Hong Kong.

Abstract

While Hong Kong is an extremely wealthy city, where one in seven residents is a millionaire, the city also has one of the most unaffordable housing markets in the world. This policy review examines how the development of various housing policies since the 1950s have contributed to segregation and housing inequality. After exploring various aspects of Hong Kong's housing market, we introduce a typology of segregation, the study of which would allow a deeper understanding of the current housing situation. Building on the existing studies of micro-segregation and our recent observation, we further introduce the concept of nano-segregation. Micro- and nano-segregations take place in Hong Kong both horizontally and vertically. They manifest the severe socio-spatial inequalities that result from the aspirations expressed in the policies, and from the benefits to individuals who have gained from the changes. 17. Illegal luxuritecture: How the super-rich in Hong Kong land grab and unlawfully expand their luxury living spaces

Abstract

This article introduces the concept of ‘illegal luxuritecture’ – illegal luxury architecture – to capture the way a minority of super-rich expand their living environments without planning permissions, sometimes through land grabs of government land. Typically, illegal housing is associated with the urban poor, but it is argued that through elite capture, unauthorised building works (UBWs) have also been utilised by the super-rich. This article focusses on Hong Kong where a number of illegal luxuritectural structures came to light after September 2023 when the most severe rainstorm since records began in the 19th century caused the collapse of unauthorised building works. Illegal luxuritectural construction involves illegally altering building foundations and sometimes flood protection walls, causing destabilisation of soil and creating landslides. Although failure to comply with Building (Planning) Regulations and the Buildings Ordinance is a criminal offence which can result in fines or imprisonment, findings suggest that a minority of the elite class tends to ignore these regulations. This is because, the fines for unauthorised building works are relatively small in relation to the high value of the property or the rental income generated, and prison sentences are almost never imposed. This article contributes to the current academic discussions on the super-rich in general and the housing of the global super-rich in particular.

18. Inside the world of middle-class Hong Kong transnational property investors: '5980 miles to my second home'.

Abstract

Academic and popular debates around the movement of financial capital tied to the residential housing market in global cities such as London, tend to focus on the super-rich, wealth management and pension funds. While such debates acknowledge that these large scale capital flows influence socioeconomic structures of the destination cities, relatively little is known about how middle-class money flows across national and city boundaries, and between key intermediaries. This article aims to address these empirical and conceptual lacunae by examining the practices of middle-class Hong Kong investors, many of whom have been investing in properties worldwide since the early 1990s. Using ethnographic research and interviews carried out in Hong Kong and the UK, this article sheds light on the investment activity of two groups of middle-class investors: the wealthy middle-class and the aspiring middle-class. The article shows how a wealthy city-state like Hong Kong, with a laissez-faire economy and established international real estate sector, has enabled the outflow of capital to the global housing market.
