10. International Analysis of Sources and Human Health Risk Associated with Trace Metal Contaminants in Residential Indoor Dust

Abstract

People spend increasing amounts of time at home, yet the indoor home environment remains understudied in terms of potential exposure to toxic trace metals. We evaluated trace metal (and metalloid) concentrations (As, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and health risks in indoor dust from homes from 35 countries, along with a suite of potentially contributory residential characteristics. The objective was to determine trace metal source inputs and home environment conditions associated with increasing exposure risk across a range of international communities. For all countries, enrichments compared to global crustal values were Zn > Pb > Cu > As > Cr > Ni; with the greatest health risk from Cr, followed by As > Pb > Mn > Cu > Ni > Zn. Three main indoor dust sources were identified, with a Pb–Zn–As factor related to legacy Pb sources, a Zn–Cu factor reflecting building materials, and a Mn factor indicative of natural soil sources. Increasing home age was associated with greater Pb and As concentrations (5.0 and 0.48 mg/kg per year of home age, respectively), as were peeling paint and garden access. Therefore, these factors form important considerations for the development of evidence-based management strategies to reduce potential risks posed by indoor house dust. Recent findings indicate neurocognitive effects from low concentrations of metal exposures; hence, an understanding of the home exposome is vital. © 2021 The Authors. Abstract

In the phase 3 ANDROMEDA trial, patients treated with daratumumab, bortezomib, cyclophosphamide, and dexamethasone (D-VCd) had significantly higher rates of organ and hematologic response compared with patients who received VCd alone. Here, we present patient-reported outcomes (PROs) from the ANDROMEDA trial. PROs were assessed through cycle 6 using three standardized questionnaires. Treatment effect through cycle 6 was measured by a repeated-measures, mixed-effects model. The magnitude of changes in PROs versus baseline was generally low, but between-group differences favored the D-VCd group. Results were generally consistent irrespective of hematologic, cardiac, or renal responses. More patients in the D-VCd group experienced meaningful improvements in PROs; median time to improvement was more rapid in the D-VCd group versus the VCd group. After cycle 6, patients in the D-VCd group received daratumumab monotherapy and their PRO assessments continued, with improvements in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) reported through cycle 19. PROs of subgroups with renal and cardiac involvement were consistent with those of the intent-to-treat population. These results demonstrate that the previously reported clinical benefits of D-VCd were achieved without decrement to patients' HRQoL and provide support of D-VCd in patients with AL amyloidosis. © 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

33. Positron–electron autocorrelation function study of E-center in silicon.

Abstract

Two-dimensional angular correlation of annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) spectra have been taken for 10[sup 19] cm[sup -3] phosphorus-doped Si in the as-grown state after having been subjected to 1.8 MeV electron fluences of 1×10[sup 18] and 2×10[sup 18] cm[sup -2]. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy confirms, in accordance with previous works, that positrons are saturation trapping into (V[sub Si]:P) pair defect (E-center) monovacancy sites in the electron irradiated samples. In the as-grown case, the positron–electron autocorrelation functions along the [111] and [1-10] directions, obtained through Fourier transformation of the 2D-ACAR data, reveal zero-crossings that deviate only slightly from the lattice points, in a manner consistent with positron–electron correlation effects. Conversely, in the spectra of the irradiated samples, the zero-crossing points are observed to move outward further by between 0.15 and 0.50 Å. This displacement is associated with positron annihilation with electrons in localized orbitals at the defect site. An attempt is made to extract just the component of the defect’s positron–electron autocorrelation function that relates to the localized defect orbitals. In doing this features are found that correspond to the expected atomic positions at the vacancy defect site suggesting that this real-space function may provide a convenient means for obtaining a mapping of localized orbitals. The observed approximate separability of positron and electron wave-function autocorrelates leads to an estimate of 0.22 eV for the positron binding energy to the E-center. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Homologous dicarboxylic acids (C2–C12), ketocarboxylic acids (ωC2–ωC9, pyruvic acid) and dicarbonyls (glyoxal and methylglyoxal) have been studied in the urban aerosol samples (PM2.5) collected from the Hong Kong roadside atmosphere during winter and summer of 2003 using a capillary GC and GC-MS method. The concentrations of total dicarboxylic acids, ketocarboxylic acids, and α-dicarbonyls were higher in winter than in summer (except for some species like phthalic acid, Ph). Oxalic (C2) acid was found as the most abundant species in summer, followed by Ph. Oxalic (C2) acid was also found as the most abundant species in winter, but followed by malonic (C3) acid. The C2 diacid comprised 28–66% of the total diacid concentrations. The diacids with higher carbon numbers were less abundant, although C9 diacid was relatively abundant (2%). Glyoxylic acid (ωC2) and methylglyoxal were found as the most abundant ketocarboxylic acid and dicarbonyl in both seasons, respectively. The concentrations of the total diacids, total ketoacids and total dicarbonyls ranged from 224 to 1381 ng m−3, 10 to 89 ng m−3 and 5 to 21 ng m−3, respectively. Their relative abundances in PM2.5 mass were 1.18%, 0.06% and 0.02%, respectively. High concentrations of toluene (winter: 33.8 μg m−3; summer: 41.3 μg m−3) and naphthalenes (winter: 1.2 μg m−3; summer: 1.9 μg m−3) observed were one possible source for the abundant phthalic and also methylmaleic acids detected.
