Abstract Background My Dispense is a virtual pharmacy simulation developed for students to train and practice dispensing skills in a safe environment that causes no harm to patients. This study was aimed to investigate learners’ perspectives on the effectiveness of MyDispense and its suitability to integrate into the clinical pharmacy module in Viet Nam. Methods A mixed method approach was undertaken. Fourth- and fifth-year pharmacy students at University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city and community pharmacists were invited to complete a survey questionnaire and to participate in semi-structured interviews. Results A total of 92/99 participants agreed to take part, of which 75% of participants were students and 65.2% were female. About three-quarters of the participants agreed or strongly agreed that MyDispense improved their dispensing skills, such as patient counselling (70.6%) and collecting patient infomation (85.9%). The majority of the participants (84.8%) considered that MyDispense was suitable to integrate into the clinical pharmacy module. Qualitative analysis from the interviews highlighted the advantages of MyDispense, comprising high interactivity with users, safe environment for practicing medication dispensing, and diversity of common marketed medications. In addition, certain barriers of this programme were also reported, including the complicated process, inconsistent quality of product images, and mixed English-Vietnamese languages. Conclusions From learner’s perspectives, MyDispense was an effective tool to enhance dispensing skills and was suitable to integrated into the clinical pharmacy module in Viet Nam.

Recent advances have identified peripheral cytokines as a potential tool to predict disease outcomes and inform therapeutic decisions. Hence, in this study, we aim to build a predictive model for HCC based on serum levels of different cytokines.Patients and Methods: We used immunoassay to quantify the concentrations of IL-27, MIP-1β, Perforin, sCD137, sFas, and TNF-α in the serum of 38 HCC patients and 15 healthy controls. Logistic regression was then used to construct classification models detecting HCC based on these cytokines. A nomogram of the best-performing model was generated to visualize HCC prediction.Results: sFas and MIP-1β were found to be significantly higher in HCC patients compared to controls. Predictive models based on cytokine levels combining sFas, sCD137, and IL-27 performed the best in distinguishing HCC patients from healthy controls. This model has a bias-corrected area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) of 0.948, a sensitivity of 92.11%, a specificity of 93.33%, and an accuracy of 0.925.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that serum cytokines have the potential to be utilized in HCC screening to improve detection rates.Keywords: hepatocellular carcinoma, cytokines, serum, biomarkers

Implications Statement: This research investigates the potential of electroplating sludge (ESs) as a sustainable and effective photocatalyst for the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in wastewater. The study demonstrates that ESs, containing photoactive metal oxides, can effectively degrade CIP under ultraviolet light irradiation. This research suggests that ESs offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to wastewater treatment, promoting a circular economy. The findings contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for a cleaner and safer environment.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly lethal cancer. Paclitaxel (PTX), typically administered intravenously (IV) as chemotherapy, shows promise for triggering immunogenic cell death (ICD) and may serve as a potential immunotherapy. This study introduces an oral PTX delivery method using an enteric-coated gelatin capsule containing capric acid oil and an effervescent agent, optionally with decylamine-conjugated β-glucans (DA-βGlus). Upon dissolving in the small intestine, the capsule undergoes an effervescence reaction that produces emulsified oil droplets (ODs) by bile salts, forming either Bared/ODs/PTX or DA-βGlus/ODs/PTX, with the latter featuring surface-attached DA-βGlus. The study evaluates the oral absorption, pharmacokinetics, and therapeutic efficacy of these formulations, comparing them to IV administration. IV PTX causes rapid spikes in plasma concentration, quick metabolism, and elimination, which can be unsafe. In contrast, the oral delivery system maintains consistent drug levels in the bloodstream for longer periods, improving overall effectiveness. Bared/ODs/PTX follows conventional fat absorption pathways, limiting tumor targeting. On the other hand, DA-βGlus/ODs/PTX uses DA-βGlus to enhance specificity for tumors through endogenous macrophage-mediated transport, effectively acting as "cellular tumor-seeking vehicles". This study aims to evaluate impaired insulin tolerance among Vietnamese diabetes with or without dyslipidemia. Diabetes mellitus (DM) remains the serious global health and social burden that has increased over the past few decades. It progresses silently to vascular injury and disability of injured vascular-perfused tissues/organs. Insulin intolerance and dyslipidemia exacerbate and accelerate the implications of DM. Thus, early detection and more evidence of early insulin intolerance and dyslipidemia is needed for proactive management. This cross-sectional descriptive study recruited 100 healthy control (HC) and 297 DM patients in Military Hospital 103 from 2021 to 2023. Patients with DM were subgrouped into lipid metabolism disorder (LMD, n = 98) and non-LMD (NLMD, n = 99). The biochemists' serum levels were measured automatically and the accuracy of the test result was strictly controlled. Insulin tolerance indices (HOMA2-IR, HOMA2-%S and HOMA2-%B) were compared between HC, DM with or without dyslipidemia as well as correlated with lipid ingredients (total Cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C and HDL-C). Among DM patients, HOMA2-IR was significantly high and HOMA2-%S and HOMA2-%B were significantly low. HOMA2-IR was higher and HOMA2-%S and HOMA2-%B were lower in DM with LMD than in DM without LMD. In addition, HOMA2-IR was positively correlated with serum cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-C concentration, and negatively correlated to HDL-C concentration. In contrast, HOMA2-%S and HOMA2-%B was negatively correlated with serum cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-C, and positively correlated with HDL-C. We studied a community cluster of 25 mpox cases in Vietnam caused by emerging monkeypox virus sublineage C.1 and imported into Vietnam through 2 independent events; 1 major cluster carried a novel APOBEC3-like mutation. Three patients died; all had advanced HIV co-infection. Viral evolution and its potential consequences should be closely monitored.

Objectives: In this study, the impacts of various processing parameters on the quality and consumer satisfaction of dragon fruit beverages were investigated in order to establish an informative framework for the manufacturing of commercial dragon fruit beverages, focusing on health benefits and safety for consumers, and sensory appeal of the products., Methods: This study employed various analytical methods to quantify some important phytochemical compounds in dragon fruit juice such as total and reducing sugars, vitamin C, betacyanins, anthocyanins, polyphenol, and so forth. This study also employed the Box-Behnken response surface experimental design to optimize various processing parameters for quality and consumer satisfaction, which include enzymatic pectin hydrolysis parameters and formulation for dragon fruit energy drink., Results: The results from this study indicated a causal relationship between geological origin and some important characteristics of dragon fruit juice, emphasizing the need to track the source of fruits to ensure consistent quality of juice products. Background: Type 2 diabetes, a lifestyle-related disease demanding daily self-management, is a significant health concern. In this context, the use of telemedicine as a management tool is a relatively new and promising approach. This study aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge by identifying the effectiveness of telemedicine in managing type 2 diabetes through a systematic review approach., Methods: Four databases were searched including PubMed, Virtual Health Library, Global Health Library, and Google Scholar on 27 July 2022. Additionally, a manual search was performed to identify any relevant articles that may have been missed. The quality of the included articles was rigorously assessed using the Study Quality Assessment Tools of the National Institute of Health., Results: We analyzed data from 134 articles. All 134 studies were published between 2002 and 2022, including 103 controlled intervention trials, 13 cohort studies, 7 before-after (pre-post) studies with no control group, 1 initial trial, 1 case study, 1 pilot study, and 8 two-arm studies that did not report the study design. Accordingly, most studies show positive changes in glycemic index in every group using telemedicine. Overall, although the BMI and weight indices in the studies improved at the end of the course, the improvement values were considered insignificant., Conclusion: Telemedicine may be a valuable solution for blood sugar management in patients with type 2 diabetes. Pathological tissues release a variety of factors, including extracellular vesicles (EVs) shed by activated or apoptotic cells. EVs trapped within the native pathological valves may act as key mediators of valve thrombosis. Telepharmacy is receiving significant attention as an innovative approach. The objective of this study is to assess the needs and evaluate the impact of telepharmacy applications in drug consultations at Thu Duc City Hospital. We used a cross-sectional research design and conducted a survey with the participation of leaders of the Faculty of Pharmacy, clinical pharmacists, dispensing pharmacists, and patients or their caregivers who receive medication at the Pharmacy of Thu Duc Hospital. We deployed a telepharmacy application for consulting on drug use and surveyed the satisfaction of patients/family members with the telepharmacy model. 60.3% of survey subjects expressed a desire to receive drug use consultations through telepharmacy if the hospital were to offer this service. One hundred percent of the pharmacists at the pharmacy and the hospital's leadership believe that telepharmacy can address patient consultation needs and improve the current physical facilities in the dispensing area. Over 90% of telepharmacy users reported being satisfied or very satisfied with the service. Telepharmacy has garnered the attention of patients, their caregivers, and the medical staff at the Outpatient Pharmacy of Thu Duc Hospital. The majority of users are satisfied with the drug use consultation service provided by telepharmacy. Objective: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignancies and ranks third in terms of cancer-related mortality. This study aims to identify the hub genes and potential mechanisms in GC using a bioinformatics approach., Methods: Microarray data GSE54129, GSE79973, GSE55696 were extracted from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was identified using Benjamini-Hochberg method in the limma package. GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses of the DEGs were conducted. Furthermore, protein-protein interaction network was constructed the STRING platform, and the hub genes were discovered using Maximal Clique Centrality method via cytoHubba. The predictive significance of hub genes was evaluated through GSE15459 dataset., Results: A total of 73 genes was identified as DEGs in GC. Volcano plots and heatmaps of DEGs were visualized. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that the genes were mostly enriched in response to xenobiotic stimulus, digestion, cellular hormone metabolic process, extracellular matrix structural constituent, calcium-dependent cysteine-type endopeptidase activity, aromatase activity, apical part of cell, basal part of cell, and apical plasma membrane. Regarding KEGG pathway-enrichment, the genes were mainly involved in Drug metabolism-cytochrome P450, Retinol metabolism, Chemical carcinogenesis-DNA adducts, Gastric acid secretion, and Metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450. By combining the results of Cytohubba, the top five intersecting genes identified were SPP1, INHBA, MMP7, THBS2 and FAP. Kapplan-Meier analysis results showed that these 5 hub genes were highly related to the overall survival of patients., Conclusion: SPP1, INHBA, MMP7, THBS2, and FAP were identified as prospective biomarkers and therapeutic targets for GC that might be utilized for prognostic evaluation and scheme selection.

Background: Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5) human infections are a global concern, with many A(H5) human cases detected in Vietnam, including a case in October 2022. Using avian influenza virus surveillance from March 2017-September 2022, we described the percent of pooled samples that were positive for avian influenza A, A(H5), A(H5N1), A(H5N6), and A(H5N8) viruses in live bird markets (LBMs) in Vietnam., Methods: Monthly at each LBM, 30 poultry oropharyngeal swab specimens and five environmental samples were collected. Samples were pooled in groups of five and tested for influenza A, A(H5), A(H5N1), A(H5N6), and A(H5N8) viruses by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Trends in the percent of pooled samples that were positive for avian influenza were summarized by LBM characteristics and time and compared with the number of passively detected avian influenza outbreaks using Spearman's rank correlation., Results: A total of 25,774 pooled samples were collected through active surveillance at 167 LBMs in 24 provinces; 36.9% of pooled samples were positive for influenza A, 3.6% A(H5), 1.9% A(H5N1), 1.1% A(H5N6), and 0.2% A(H5N8). Influenza A(H5) viruses were identified January-December and at least once in 91.7% of sampled provinces. In 246 A(H5) outbreaks in poultry; 20.3% were influenza A(H5N1), 60.2% A(H5N6), and 19.5% A(H5N8); outbreaks did not correlate with active surveillance., Conclusions: In Vietnam, influenza A(H5) viruses were detected by active surveillance in LBMs year-round and in most provinces sampled. In addition to outbreak reporting, active surveillance for A(H5) viruses in settings with high potential for animal-to-human spillover can provide situational awareness., (© 2023 The Authors. In this work, five cerium(IV) complexes were synthesized, three of which were structural isomorphs from the same pyrasal ligand with the solid-state result identified by structural analysis dependent on the initial pH of the reaction solution and the temperature at which the reaction is performed. The ligands explored here are pyrasal ligands, which are Schiff-base ligands formed by the condensation of 2,3-diaminopyrazine and a salicylaldehyde derivative. Pyrasal ligands have weaker binding than other salophen-type ligands due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the nitrogen atoms contained within the pyrazine ring. The weaker binding leaves the ligand more susceptible to the changes in pH and temperature that alternate the chelating environment from 8- to 10-coordinate. This electron-withdrawing effect of the pyrazine backbone also deactivates the second amine after the first condensation addition of salicylaldehyde. Without a metal to template the complex formation reaction, even with extended reaction times and the addition of a large excess of ligand, the result is the addition of only one salicylaldehyde.

Modern communication and navigation systems are increasingly relying on atomic clocks. As timing precision requirements increase, demands for lower SWaP (size, weight, and power) clocks rise. However, it has been challenging to break through the general trade-off trend between the clock stability performance and SWaP. Here we demonstrate micro mercury trapped ion clock (M2TIC) prototypes integrated with novel micro-fabricated technologies to simultaneously achieve high performance and low SWaP. The M2TIC prototypes could reach the [Formula: see text]-stability level in 1 day with a SWaP of 1.1 L, 1.2 kg, and under 6 W of power. This stability level is comparable to the widely used rack-mount Microchip 5071A cesium frequency standard. These standalone prototypes survived regular commercial shipping across the North American continent to a government laboratory, where their performance was independently tested. Background: To analyze the clinical and radiological effects of type 2 diabetes mellitus on the prognosis of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture after percutaneous vertebroplasty, and explore the prognostic value of osteoporotic fracture classification., Methods: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture patients who received vertebroplasty from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2021 were divided into type 2 diabetes mellitus group and control group in this retrospective cohort study. Visual analogue scale, Oswestry Disability Index, bone cement leakage, new compression fracture, anterior, middle, and posterior portion heights of vertebral body and local Cobb angle on X-ray before surgery, 2 days after surgery, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery were recorded, and the osteoporotic fracture classification was performed. P < 0.05 was set as statistical significance., Results: A total of 261 vertebral bodies were included, containing 68 in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group and 193 in the control group. There were no differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. At 6 months after vertebroplasty, the local Cobb angle of the type 2 diabetes mellitus group was 8.29 ± 4.90° greater than that of the control group 6.05 ± 5.18° (P = 0.002). At 12 months, compared with pre-operation, the anterior portion height recovered 8.13 ± 12.90%, which was less than 12.51 ± 14.92% of the control group (P = 0.032), and 19.07 ± 16.47% of the middle portion height recovery was less than the control group's 24.63 ± 17.67% (P = 0.024). Compared with the control group, osteoporotic fracture 2 vertebral bodies of the type 2 diabetes mellitus group at 12 months postoperatively in middle portion height (14.82 ± 14.71% vs 24.78 ± 18.16%, P = 0.023) and local Cobb angle (5.65 ± 4.06° vs 3.26 ± 4.86°, P = 0.043) restored significantly worse. Besides, osteoporotic fracture 3 with type 2 diabetes mellitus restored worse in anterior portion height (5.40 ± 11.02% vs 13.57 ± 12.79%, P = 0.008), middle portion height (11.22 ± 15.53% vs 17.84 ± 12.36%, P = 0.041) and local Cobb angle (10.85 ± 3.79 vs 7.97 ± 3.83°, P = 0.002) at 12 months postoperatively. There was no difference in radiological outcomes of osteoporotic fracture 4 between the two groups., Conclusions: The degree of fractured vertebral compression, the recovery of the height and angle obtained immediately after surgery and the clinical symptoms in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were not different from those in the control. However, vertebral body morphology of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients was worse since the sixth month after surgery. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease relating to steady hyperglycemia resulting from the impairment of the endocrine and non-endocrine systems. Many new drugs having varied targets were discovered to treat this disease, especially type 2 diabetes. Among those, α-glucosidase inhibitors showed their effects by preventing the digestion of carbohydrates through their inhibition against α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Recently, chalcones have attracted considerable attention as they have a simple structure, are easily synthesized as well as have a variety of derivatives. Some reports suggested that chalcone and its derivates could inhibit α-amylase and α-glucosidase. This narrative review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the inhibition of chalcone and its derivatives against α-amylase and α-glucosidase that were reviewed and reported in published scientific articles. Twenty-eight articles were reviewed after screening 207 articles found in four databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, VHL (Virtual Health Library), and GHL (Global Health Library). This review presented the inhibitory effects of varied chalcones, including chalcones with a basic structural framework, azachalcones, bis-chalcones, chalcone oximes, coumarin-chalcones, cyclohexane chalcones, dihydrochalcones, and flavanone-coupled chalcones. Many of these chalcones had significant inhibition against α-amylase as well as α-glucosidase that were comparable to or even stronger than standard inhibitors. Introduction: Mucus in the female reproductive tract acts as a barrier that traps and eliminates pathogens and foreign particles via steric and adhesive interactions. During pregnancy, mucus protects the uterine environment from ascension of pathogens and bacteria from the vagina into the uterus, a potential contributor to intrauterine inflammation and preterm birth. As recent work has demonstrated the benefit of vaginal drug delivery in treating women's health indications, we sought to define the barrier properties of human cervicovaginal mucus (CVM) during pregnancy to inform the design of vaginally delivered therapeutics during pregnancy., Methods: CVM samples were self-collected by pregnant participants over the course of pregnancy, and barrier properties were quantified using multiple particle tracking. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to analyze the composition of the vaginal microbiome., Results: Participant demographics differed between term delivery and preterm delivery cohorts, with Black or African American participants being significantly more likely to delivery prematurely. We observed that vaginal microbiota is most predictive of CVM barrier properties and of timing of parturition. A limiting factor in using blood-based liquid biopsies for cancer detection is the volume of extracted blood required to capture a measurable number of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). To overcome this limitation, we developed a technology named the dCas9 capture system to capture ctDNA from unaltered flowing plasma, removing the need to extract the plasma from the body. This technology has provided the first opportunity to investigate whether microfluidic flow cell design can affect the capture of ctDNA in unaltered plasma. With inspiration from microfluidic mixer flow cells designed to capture circulating tumor cells and exosomes, we constructed four microfluidic mixer flow cells. Next, we investigated the effects of these flow cell designs and the flow rate on the rate of captured spiked-in BRAF T1799A (BRAF Mut ) ctDNA in unaltered flowing plasma using surface-immobilized dCas9. Once the optimal mass transfer rate of ctDNA, identified by the optimal ctDNA capture rate, was determined, we investigated whether the design of the microfluidic device, flow rate, flow time, and the number of spiked-in mutant DNA copies affected the rate of capture by the dCas9 capture system. We found that size modifications to the flow channel had no effect on the flow rate required to achieve the optimal capture rate of ctDNA. However, decreasing the size of the capture chamber decreased the flow rate required to achieve the optimal capture rate. Finally, we showed that, at the optimal capture rate, different microfluidic designs using different flow rates could capture DNA copies at a similar rate over time. In this study, the optimal capture rate of ctDNA in unaltered plasma was identified by adjusting the flow rate in each of the passive microfluidic mixer flow cells. However, further validation and optimization of the dCas9 capture system are required before it is ready to be used clinically.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that requires iron for growth and virulence, yet this nutrient is sequestered by the innate immune system during infection. When iron is limiting, P. aeruginosa expresses the PrrF1 and PrrF2 small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs), which post-transcriptionally repress expression of non-essential iron-containing proteins thus sparing this nutrient for more critical processes. The genes for the PrrF1 and PrrF2 sRNAs are arranged in tandem on the chromosome, allowing for the transcription of a longer heme-responsive sRNA, termed PrrH. While the functions of PrrF1 and PrrF2 have been studied extensively, the role of PrrH in P. aeruginosa physiology and virulence is not well understood. In this study, we performed transcriptomic and proteomic studies to identify the PrrH regulon. In shaking cultures, the pyochelin synthesis proteins were increased in two distinct prrH mutants compared to wild type, while the mRNAs for these proteins were not affected by prrH mutation. We identified complementarity between the PrrH sRNA and sequence upstream of the pchE mRNA, suggesting potential for PrrH to directly regulate expression of genes for pyochelin synthesis. We further showed that pchE mRNA levels were increased in the prrH mutants when grown in static but not shaking conditions. Moreover, we discovered controlling for the presence of light was critical for examining the impact of PrrH on pchE expression. As such, our study reports on the first likely target of the PrrH sRNA and highlights key environmental variables that will allow for future characterization of PrrH function.

In this study, total phosphorus (P) and P released forms were measured in core sediments from the areas affected by human settlement and shrimp farming activities and the core zone of the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, a coastal district in south Vietnam. Furthermore, ecological risk assessment and parameters controlling P release from sediments were investigated, including pH, major elements (Al-Ca-Mg-Fe), and fine fraction. The average total amount of P in the sediments varied from 287 to 669 mg/kg, with significantly lower values being observed in the mangrove biosphere reserve area. According to the results of the correlation analysis, organic matter was the primary source of P in the sediments, but the majority of the P released was inorganic. Positive correlations were found between Fe and non-apatite inorganic P (NAIP) and apatite P (AP), as well as intercorrelations between P fractions (r = 0.40-0.79, p < 0.05), suggesting that Fe might be the controlling factor of P release in the investigated sediments. The rank orders of concentrations of P forms were significantly different between the areas. The range of P forms was AP (35-248 mg/kg) > NAIP (63-201 mg/kg) > LP (labile P) (4-25 mg/kg) in the human settlement and aquaculture areas and NAIP (84-99 mg/kg) > AP (20-38 mg/kg) > LP (7-12 mg/kg) in the mangrove biosphere reserve area. Risk assessment based on the total concentration of P and the availability of P from a single extraction suggested a relatively low risk of P from sediment as an internal load in the studied areas., (© 2022. We investigated changes in some laboratory indices and the liver histology of chronic hepatitis patients who were exposed to dioxin. In 2014, we collected liver biopsy samples for histopathological examination from 33 chronic hepatitis patients living around the Da Nang Airbase, which is a dioxin-contaminated area due to the herbicide spraying in Vietnam. Dioxin exposure was measured by its levels in the blood. METAVIR classification was used to clarify the liver fibrosis stage. Laboratory tests included ten biochemical and six hematological indices that were measured in the blood. A regression linear model and binary logistic regression were used for data analysis. The observed alterations in the liver at the histological level mainly comprised hydropic degenerative hepatocytes, lymphocytes and polynuclear leukocytes surrounding the liver cells and granular and lipoic degeneration. In addition, increased TCDD levels were associated with increasing aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase, protein and total bilirubin levels and liver fibrosis stage. Similarly, increased TEQ-PCDD/Fs levels were associated with higher levels of AST and protein and liver fibrosis stage. In conclusion, dioxin exposure altered the liver histology and increased some biochemical marker indices and the liver fibrosis stage of chronic hepatitis patients living in dioxin-contaminated areas in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Background: Distant metastasis is a significant factor influencing chondrosarcoma (CHS) patients' treatment and prognosis. We aimed to establish a consistent and effective nomogram to better predict distant metastases of CHS individuals., Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database was used to obtain the demographics and clinicopathological characteristics of CHS patients from 2010 to 2018. Independent risk factors were identified via univariate and multivariate logistic regressive analysis. A nomogram that predicts metastasis risk was established based on the training cohort, and its accuracy was validated through the validation cohort. The performance of this predictive model was assessed by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and Harrell's concordance index (C-index). Finally, decision curve analysis (DCA) was conducted to test its clinical reliability., Results: Data of 1,066 patients were extracted, of these, 66 cases (6.19%) were with distant metastasis at initial diagnosis. The following features were shown to be linked to an increased risk of metastasis: high-grade tumor, T3 stage, and large tumor size; whereas unmarried and use of surgery were independent protective factors. Marital status, tumor grade, T stage, use of cancer-directed surgery and tumor size were incorporated to develop the novel nomogram. The ROC curves showed the effectiveness of the nomogram with the high area under the curves, the C-indices were 0.931 and 0.951 in the internal and external validation, respectively. This study aims to understand the spatial distribution of coral reefs in the central region of Viet Nam. We classified live coral cover in Son Tra Peninsula (ST) and Cu Lao Cham Island (CLC) in the South-Central Coast Region of Viet Nam using the Maximum Likelihood Classifier on 3 m Planetscope imagery. Confusion matrices and the accuracy of the classifier were assessed using field data (1,543 and 1,560 photographs in ST and CLC, respectively). The results showed that the reef's width ranged from 30 to 300 m across the study site, and we were able to detect live coral cover across a depth gradient of 2 to 6 m below the sea surface. The overall accuracies of the classifier (the Kappa coefficient) were 76.78% (0.76) and 78.08% (0.78) for ST and CLC, respectively. We found that 60.25% of coral reefs in ST were unhealthy and the live coral cover was less than 50%, while 25.75% and 11.46% of those in CLC were in good and excellent conditions, respectively. This study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing Planetscope imagery to monitor shallow coral reefs of small islands at a high spatial resolution of 3 m. This study sought to assess the cost-effectiveness of population-based tobacco control interventions, which included health promotion and education, smoke-free models, cessation programs, warning on package, marketing bans, and raising tax. Standardized activity-based costing ingredient approach was applied with the provider perspective to calculate interventions cost from 2013 to 2017. The potential health impacts of the aforementioned interventions were calculated through a Microsoft Excel-based modeling adapted from Higashi et al and Ngalesoni et al. All six population-based tobacco control interventions were highly cost-effective with ranges from 1405 VND (Vietnamese Dong) to 135 560 VND per DALY (disability-adjusted life year) averted. It was identified that raising cigarette taxes and applying health warnings on tobacco packages are the most favorable, cost-effective interventions. The results from this study provide a robust message that calls for increased attention and efforts in developing an appropriate policy agenda, which jointly integrates both political and community-based interventions, to maximize intervention impact on tobacco use.

Screening for perinatal depression is a clinical approach to identifying women in need of mental health diagnoses, referral, and treatment. Many states mandate screening for perinatal depression, but it remains unclear whether screening leads to increased access to treatment and better health outcomes. The aim of this qualitative study was to identify how women from diverse backgrounds perceive the quality of perinatal depression screening and whether the perceived quality affected their decisions about mental health care. During 2019 a sample of twenty-nine participants who had been screened for perinatal depression completed semistructured in-depth interviews in which they were asked for their impressions of the screening process. Common themes were that the screening was ineffective because providers didn't explain the purpose or uses of the screening tool, didn't tell patients anything about the results, and failed to provide any follow-up relating to patient depression scores. The results suggest the need for health care facilities to engage patients in a dialogue about screening results and for health care delivery systems to refine the screening process. These findings offer a foundation to design more comprehensive, patient-centered screening protocols that might result in improved mental health outcomes.

Background: Healthy eating and physical activity are effective non-pharmacological approaches to boost immune function and contain the pandemic. We aimed to explore the associations and interactions between physical activity and healthy eating behavior with COVID-19-like symptoms (Slike-CV19S)., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 3947 outpatients, from 14 February to 2 March 2020, at nine health facilities in Vietnam. Data collection included sociodemographic characteristics, healthy eating behavior (using the healthy eating score (HES) questionnaire), physical activity (using the short form international physical activity questionnaire), and Slike-CV19S. The associations and interactions were tested using logistic regression models., Results: Frequent intake of fruits (OR = 0.84; p = 0.016), vegetables (OR = 0.72; p = 0.036), and fish (OR = 0.43; p < 0.001) were associated with a lower Slike-CV19S likelihood, as compared with infrequent intake. Patients with higher HES levels (OR = 0.84; p = 0.033 for medium HES; OR = 0.77; p = 0.006 for high HES) or being physically active (OR = 0.69; p < 0.001) had a lower Slike-CV19S likelihood, as compared to those with low HES or physical inactivity, respectively. Patients with medium HES who were physically active (OR = 0.69; p = 0.005), or with high HES and physically active (OR = 0.58; p < 0.001), had a lower Slike-CV19S likelihood, as compared to those with low HES and physical inactivity., Conclusions: Healthy eating behavior and physical activity showed single and combinative impacts on protecting people from Slike-CV19S. Strategic approaches are encouraged to improve healthy behaviors, which may further contribute to containing the pandemic.

Background: Evidence regarding the outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in low-and-middle incomes countries remains limited., Objectives: To report the outcomes post PCI at discharge, 30 days and 12 months in Vietnam and identify the key factors associated with adverse outcomes at 12 months., Methods: We used data from a single centre prospective cohort in Vietnam. Data regarding demographics, clinical presentation, procedural information, and outcomes of patients were collected and analysed. Primary outcomes were mortality and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events., Results: In total, 926 patients were included. Poor outcomes were relatively low in those undergoing PCI. Predictors of mortality and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events at 12 months post-PCI included being older than 75, being male, having acute myocardial infarction, left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 40%, prior cerebral vascular disease and having an unsuccessful PCI., Conclusions: Adverse outcomes of patients undergoing PCI in Vietnam are relatively low in comparison with those reported in other countries across the Asia Pacific region. Introduction: Acute spontaneous subdural hematoma (ASSDH) due to ruptured arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is exceptional. There were only four reported cases. In this paper, we present a successful multimodality treatment of the ASSDH secondary to ruptured AVM., Case Presentation: A 21-year-old healthy man with no history of trauma presented to our hospital with complaints of severe headache for 12 hours before admission. On examination, he was alert and oriented. He had no intracranial hypertension, meningismus, and neurological deficits. Computed tomography illustrated a right acute subdural hematoma 8mm in thickness with a 5mm midline shift and a right frontal intraparenchymal hemorrhage 40 × 25mm in size. Digital subtraction angiography showed a 2 × 3 cm right frontal AVM, Spetzler-Martin grade I. The feeding arteries were cortical branches of the right anterior cerebral artery, and drain veins were cortical veins. He received emergency preoperative embolization followed by hematoma evacuation and total excision of the malformation. His headache was relieved and disappeared after a week. No postoperative neurological deficits were reported., Clinical Discussion: Elective surgical resection of AVM after 4-6 weeks was preferred in patients with no risk factors of rebleeding. Emergent surgery was only indicated for significant mass effect or acute hydrocephalus. Preoperative embolization is helpful for the presence of intra-nidal or peri-nidal aneurysm, AVM with high grades, reducing intraoperative blood loss and occlusion of deep vessels., Conclusion: ASSDH due to ruptured AVM is rare and easy to omit in clinical settings. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a fast, simple, noninvasive method that provides accurate results in the early diagnosis of peripheral artery disease. Microalbuminuria is considered a predictor of renal and cardiovascular complications in patients with diabetes. This study was conducted to determine the correlation between ABI and microalbuminuria with certain risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes., Subjects and Research Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 62 inpatients with type 2 diabetes. All patients were measured for ABI as well as microalbuminuria, HbA1c, glucose and lipidemia in the blood., Results: The study results showed that in patients with dyslipidemia, the risk of having microalbuminuria (+) increased 5.7 times and ABI ≤0.90 increased 8.6 times ( P = 0.004 and 0.021, respectively). Fasting blood glucose >7.2 mmol/L had 5.7 times higher microalbuminuria (+) risk and 8.6 times higher ABI ≤0.90 ( P = 0.004 and 0.021, respectively). Patients with HbA1c ≥7% were 2.9 times more likely to have microalbuminuria (+) and ABI ≤0.90 ( P = 0.043 and 0.048, respectively)., Conclusions: Peripheral vascular disease risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and waist circumference and the effectiveness of fasting blood glucose and HbA1c control increased the risk of high microalbuminuria and ABI in patients with type 2 diabetes., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2021 The Author(s). Background: Little is known about rates of access site (transradial (TRI) or transfemoral (TFI)) preference for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and in-hospital costs of patients undergoing these procedures in lower-and middle-countries. Here, we report on access site use, in-hospital costs and outcomes of patients undergoing PCI in Vietnam., Methods: Information from 868 patients were included in the cohort of 1022 patients recruited into the first PCI registry in Vietnam. The total hospital costs and in-hospital outcomes of patients undergoing TRI and TFI were compared. Hospital costs were obtained from the hospital admission system, and major adverse cardiac events, major bleeding events and length of stay were identified through review of medical records., Findings: TRI was the dominant access site for interventionists (694/868 patients). The TFI group reported more lesions of the left main artery, more previous coronary artery bypass grafts and previous PCI in comparison with the TRI group (all p < 0.05). The TRI group was associated with a lower overall cost of admission (the adjusted difference was -1526.3 USD, 95% confident interval CI (-1996.2; -1056.3), shorter length of hospital stay (-2 days, CI (-2.8; -1.2)) and lower rates of major bleeding post-procedure. In this paper, we consider a two-user downlink full-duplex (FD) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) relay system where the FD relay uses an energy harvesting (EH) technique to assist the communication between the base station and far user over flat, independent and non-identically Rayleigh fading channels. Importantly, since the relay operates in FD mode, we take into account the effect of the interference caused by relay on the near user. Considering this EH-FD-NOMA relay system, we derive the exact mathematical expressions of the outage probabilities and ergodic capacities of near and far users. Monte-Carlo simulations verify the accuracy of our analytical method. Numerical results provided in this paper allow system designers to clearly see not only the impacts of the power distribution factor and the self-interference cancellation capacity of the relay but also the influence of the strength of inter-user interference at the near user on the outage performances and ergodic capacities of both users.

Most of chaos-based cryptosystems utilize stationary dynamics of chaos for the permutation and diffusion, and many of those are successfully attacked. In this paper, novel models of the image permutation and diffusion are proposed, in which chaotic map is perturbed at bit level on state variables, on control parameters or on both. Amounts of perturbation are initially the coordinate of pixels in the permutation, the value of ciphered word in the diffusion, and then a value extracted from state variables in every iteration. Under the persistent perturbation, dynamics of chaotic map is nonstationary and dependent on the image content. The simulation results and analyses demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models by means of the good statistical properties of transformed image obtained after just only a single round.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic affects people's health and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), especially in those who have suspected COVID-19 symptoms (S-COVID-19-S). We examined the effect of modifications of health literacy (HL) on depression and HRQoL. A cross-sectional study was conducted from 14 February to 2 March 2020. 3947 participants were recruited from outpatient departments of nine hospitals and health centers across Vietnam. The interviews were conducted using printed questionnaires including participants' characteristics, clinical parameters, health behaviors, HL, depression, and HRQoL. People with S-COVID-19-S had a higher depression likelihood (OR, 2.88; p < 0.001), lower HRQoL-score (B, -7.92; p < 0.001). In comparison to people without S-COVID-19-S and low HL, those with S-COVID-19-S and low HL had 9.70 times higher depression likelihood ( p < 0.001), 20.62 lower HRQoL-score ( p < 0.001), for the people without S-COVID-19-S, 1 score increment of HL resulted in 5% lower depression likelihood ( p < 0.001) and 0.45 higher HRQoL-score ( p < 0.001), while for those people with S-COVID-19-S, 1 score increment of HL resulted in a 4% lower depression likelihood ( p = 0.004) and 0.43 higher HRQoL-score ( p < 0.001). People with S-COVID-19-S had a higher depression likelihood and lower HRQoL than those without. HL shows a protective effect on depression and HRQoL during the epidemic.

The success of fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) in treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection has led to growing excitement about the potential of using transplanted human material as a therapy for a wide range of diseases and conditions related to microbial dysbiosis. We anticipate that the next frontier of microbiota transplantation will be vaginal microbiota transplant (VMT). The composition of the vaginal microbiota has broad impact on sexual and reproductive health. The vaginal microbiota in the "optimal" state are one of the simplest communities, dominated by one of only a few species of Lactobacillus. Diversity in the microbiota and the concomitant depletion of lactobacilli, a condition referred to as bacterial vaginosis (BV), is associated with a wide range of deleterious effects, including increased risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections and increased likelihood of having a preterm birth. However, we have very few treatment options available, and none of them curative or restorative, for "resetting" the vaginal microbiota to a more protective state. In order to test the hypothesis that VMT may be a more effective treatment option, we must first determine how to screen donors to find those with minimal risk of pathogen transmission and "optimal" vaginal microbiota for transplant. Here, we describe a universal donor screening approach that was implemented in a small pilot study of 20 women. We further characterized key physicochemical properties of donor cervicovaginal secretions (CVS) and the corresponding composition of the vaginal microbiota to delineate criteria for inclusion/exclusion. We anticipate that the framework described here will help accelerate clinical studies of VMT.

In this paper, we firstly study the security enhancement of three steganographic methods by using a proposed chaotic system. The first method, namely the Enhanced Edge Adaptive Image Steganography Based on LSB Matching Revisited (EEALSBMR), is present in the spatial domain. The two other methods, the Enhanced Discrete Cosine Transform (EDCT) and Enhanced Discrete Wavelet transform (EDWT), are present in the frequency domain. The chaotic system is extremely robust and consists of a strong chaotic generator and a 2-D Cat map. Its main role is to secure the content of a message in case a message is detected. Secondly, three blind steganalysis methods, based on multi-resolution wavelet decomposition, are used to detect whether an embedded message is hidden in the tested image (stego image) or not (cover image). The steganalysis approach is based on the hypothesis that message-embedding schemes leave statistical evidence or structure in images that can be exploited for detection. The simulation results show that the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and the Fisher Linear Discriminant (FLD) cannot distinguish between cover and stego images if the message size is smaller than 20% in the EEALSBMR steganographic method and if the message size is smaller than 15% in the EDCT steganographic method. However, SVM and FLD can distinguish between cover and stego images with reasonable accuracy in the EDWT steganographic method, irrespective of the message size.

In this paper, we propose a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) relaying system, where a source node communicates simultaneously with multiple users via the assistance of the best amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. The best relay is selected among N relays which are capable of harvesting the energy from radio frequency (RF) signals. We analyze the performance of the proposed NOMA relaying system in the conditions of imperfect channel state information (CSI) and Rayleigh fading by deriving the exact expressions of the outage probability (OP) and the approximate expression of the ergodic capacities of each user and the whole system. We also determine the optimal energy harvesting duration which minimizes the OP. Numerical results show that, for the same parameter settings, the performance of the proposed NOMA relaying system, especially the ergodic capacity of the whole system, outperforms that of the orthogonal-multiple-access (OMA) relaying system. Monte-Carlo simulations are used to validate the correctness of the analytical results.

Can Gio district is located in the coastal area of Ho Chi Minh City, southern Vietnam. Discharge of wastewater from Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces to the rivers of Can Gio has led to concerns about the accumulation of trace metals (As, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the coastal sediments. The main objective of this study was to assess the distribution of As, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn in surface and core sediments and to evaluate the contamination status in relation to local background values, as well as the potential release of these selected trace metals from sediments to the water environment. Sediment characteristization, including determination of fine fraction, pH, organic matter, and major elements (Al, Fe, Ca, K, Mg, and S), was carried out to investigate which parameters affect the trace metal enrichment. Fine fraction and Al contents were found to be the controlling proxies affecting the distribution of trace metals while other sediment characteristics did not show any clear influence on trace metals' distribution. Although As concentrations in the sediments were much higher compared to its reference value in other areas, the enrichment factor based on local background values suggests minor contamination of this element as well as for Cr, Cu, and Pb. Risk assessment suggested a medium to very high risk of Mn, Zn, and Ni under acidification. Of importance is also that trace metals in sediments were not easily mobilized by organic complexation based on their low extractabilities by ammonium-EDTA extraction.

S. epidermidis is a primary cause of biofilm-mediated infections in humans due to adherence to foreign bodies. A major staphylococcal biofilm accumulation molecule is polysaccharide intracellular adhesin (PIA), which is synthesized by enzymes encoded by the icaADBC operon. Expression of PIA is highly variable among clinical isolates, suggesting that PIA expression levels are selected in certain niches of the host. However, the mechanisms that govern enhanced icaADBC transcription and PIA synthesis in these isolates are not known. We hypothesized that enhanced PIA synthesis in these isolates was due to function of IcaR and/or TcaR. Thus, two S. epidermidis isolates (1457 and CSF41498) with different icaADBC transcription and PIA expression levels were studied. Constitutive expression of both icaR and tcaR demonstrated that both repressors are functional and can completely repress icaADBC transcription in both 1457 and CSF41498. However, it was found that IcaR was the primary repressor for CSF41498 and TcaR was the primary repressor for 1457. Further analysis demonstrated that icaR transcription was repressed in 1457 in comparison to CSF41498, suggesting that TcaR functions as a repressor only in the absence of IcaR. Indeed, DNase I footprinting suggests IcaR and TcaR may bind to the same site within the icaR-icaA intergenic region. Lastly, we found mutants expressing variable amounts of PIA could rapidly be selected from both 1457 and CSF41498. Collectively, we propose that strains producing enhanced PIA synthesis are selected within certain niches of the host through several genetic mechanisms that function to repress icaR transcription, thus increasing PIA synthesis. IMPORTANCE Staphylococcus epidermidis is a commensal bacterium that resides on our skin. As a commensal, it protects humans from bacterial pathogens through a variety of mechanisms. However, it is also a significant cause of biofilm infections due to its ability to bind to plastic. Polysaccharide intercellular adhesin is a significant component of biofilm, and we propose that the expression of this polysaccharide is beneficial in certain host niches, such as providing extra strength when the bacterium is colonizing the lumen of a catheter, and detrimental in others, such as colonization of the skin surface. Accurate segmentation of the iris area in input images has a significant effect on the accuracy of iris recognition and is a very important preprocessing step in the overall iris recognition process. In previous studies on iris recognition, however, the accuracy of iris segmentation was reduced when the images of captured irises were of low quality due to problems such as optical and motion blurring, thick eyelashes, and light reflected from eyeglasses. Deep learning-based iris segmentation has been proposed to improve accuracy, but its disadvantage is that it requires a long processing time. To resolve this problem, this study proposes a new method that quickly finds a rough iris box area without accurately segmenting the iris region in the input images and performs ocular recognition based on this. To address this problem of reduced accuracy, the recognition is performed using the ocular area, which is a little larger than the iris area, and a deep residual network (ResNet) is used to resolve the problem of reduced recognition rates due to misalignment between the enrolled and recognition iris images. Experiments were performed using three databases: Institute of Automation Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA)-Iris-Distance, CASIA-Iris-Lamp, and CASIA-Iris-Thousand. They confirmed that the method proposed in this study had a higher recognition accuracy than existing methods.
