Quantum non-Gaussian states of light have fundamental properties that are essential for a multitude of applications in quantum technology. However, many of these features are difficult to detect using standard criteria due to optical losses and detector inefficiency. As the statistics of light are unknown, the loss correction on the data is unreliable, despite the fact that the losses can be precisely measured. To address this issue, we employ a loss-mitigated verification technique utilising quantum non-Gaussian witnesses, which incorporate the known optical losses and detector inefficiency into their derivation. Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites emerged as a versatile platform for light-emitting and photovol-taic applications due to their unique structural design and chemical flexibility. Their properties depend heavily on both the choice of the inorganic lead halide framework and the surrounding organic layers. Recently, the introduction of chiral cations into 2D perovskites has attracted major interest due to their potential for introducing chirality and tuning the chiro-optical response. Importantly, the optical properties in these materials are dominated by tightly bound excitons that also serve as primary carriers for the energy transport. The mobility of photoinjected excitons is thus important from the perspectives of fundamental material properties and optoelectronic applications, yet remains an open question. Here, we demonstrate exciton propagation in a 2D chiral perovskite methylbenzylammonium lead iodide (MBA2PbI4) using transient photoluminescence microscopy and reveal density-dependent transport over more than 100 nanometers at room temperature with diffusion coeffi-cients as high as 2 cm2/s. We observe two distinct regimes of initially rapid diffusive propagation and subsequent localiza-tion. Moreover, perovskites with enantiomer pure cations are found to exhibit faster exciton diffusion compared to the race-mic mixture, correlated with the impact of the material composition on disorder. Altogether, the observations of efficient exciton diffusion at room temperature highlight the potential of 2D chiral perovskites to merge chiro-optical properties with strong light-matter interaction and efficient energy transport.

Impedance spectroscopy is vital for material characterization and assessing electrochemical device performance. It provides real-time analysis of dynamic processes such as electrode kinetics, electrons, holes or ion transport, and interfacial or defect driven phenomena. However, the technique is sensitive to experimental conditions, introducing potential variability in results. The intricate interplay of transient effects within the realm of spectral impedance analyses introduces a layer of complexity that may impede straightforward interpretations. This demands a nuanced approach for refining analytical methodologies and ensuring the fidelity of impedance characterization once the dynamic contributions of transient ingredients cannot be disentangled from the underlying steady-state characteristics. While inherent systematic errors impose a practical limit (accuracy floor) on achievable measurement accuracy, this paper offers qualitative and quantitative insights into how specific procedures affect this limit. According to the principles of quantum mechanics the Hamiltonian describing a closed system's energies must be Hermitian. This leads to an avoided crossing on resonance, as coupling between states causes the energy levels to repel. This concept lies at the heart of exciton-polariton physics, where coherent exciton-photon interaction causes polariton branches to repel in momentum dispersion. However, non-Hermitian physics predicts an opposite effect: level attraction, which occurs when significant energy dissipation is present in the system. Here, we show a manifestation of dissipative coupling in a high-quality AlGaAs-based polariton microcavity, where two polariton branches attract, resulting in an anomalous, inverted dispersion of the lower branch in momentum dispersion. We observe the evolution of the level attraction with exciton-photon detuning, leading to changes in anomalous dispersion shape within a single sample. The dissipative coupling is explained by the interaction with an indirect exciton, acting as a highly dissipative channel in our system, and the observed dispersions are well captured within a phenomenological model. Our results present a new mechanism of dissipative coupling in light-matter systems and offer a tunable and well-controlled AlGaAs-based platform for engineering the non-Hermitian and negative mass effects in polariton systems.

We present an experimental study on optical properties and dynamics of direct and spatially and momentum indirect excitons in AlGaAs/AlAs quantum wells near the crossover between $\varGamma$- and $X$-valley confined electron states. The time-integrated photoluminescence experiment at $T=$4.8 K revealed three simultaneously observed optical transitions resulting from (a) a direct exciton recombination, involving an electron and a hole states both located in the $\varGamma$-valley in the quantum well layer, and (b) two spatially and momentum indirect excitons, comprising of the confined electron states in the $X$-valley in the AlAs barrier with different effective masses and quantum well holes in the $\varGamma$-valley. The measured spatial extent, density dependence and temperature dependence of the structure photoluminescence revealed characteristics necessary to pinpoint the states' nature and provided their characterization crucial in future device design. Temporal dynamics observed in the time-resolved photoluminescence measurement showed the complexity of the capture and recombination dynamics, largely affected by nonradiative processes, what is additionally critical in the system's use. This solid state platform hosting both direct and indirect excitons in a highly tunable monolithic system can benefit and underline the operation principles of novel electronic and photonic devices.

Bosonic condensation and lasing of exciton-polaritons in microcavities is a fascinating solid-state phenomenon. It provides a versatile platform to study out-of-equilibrium many-body physics and has recently appeared at the forefront of quantum technologies. Here, we study the photon statistics via the second-order temporal correlation function of polariton lasing emerging from an optical microcavity integrated with an atomically thin MoSe2 crystal. Furthermore, we investigate the macroscopic polariton phase transition for varying excitation powers and temperatures. The lower-polariton exhibits photon bunching below the threshold, implying a dominant thermal distribution of the emission, while above the threshold, the second-order correlation transits towards unity, which evidences the formation of a coherent state. One-dimensional models with topological non-trivial band structures are a simple and effective way to study novel and exciting concepts in topological photonics. In this work we are studying the propagation of light-matter quasi-particles, so called exciton-polaritons, in waveguide arrays. Specifically, we are investigating topological states at the interface between dimer chains, characterized by a non-zero winding number. In order to exercise precise control over the polariton propagation, we study non-resonant laser excitation as well as resonant excitation in transmission geometry. The results highlight a new platform for the study of quantum fluids of light and non-linear optical propagation effects in coupled semiconductor waveguides.

With a seminal work of Raghu and Haldane in 2008, concepts of topology have been successfully introduced in a wide range of optical systems, emulating specific lattice Hamiltonians. Certainly, one of the most promising routes to an application of topological photonics in an actual device are topological lasers, where efficient and highly coherent lasing from a topologically non-trivial mode is achieved. While some attempts have been made to excite such structures electrically, the majority of published fundamental experiments use a form of laser excitation. In this paper, we use a lattice of vertical resonator polariton micropillars to form an exponentially localized topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger defect. Upon electrical excitation of the p-i-n doped structure, the system unequivocally shows polariton lasing from the topological defect using a carefully placed gold contact. Despite the presence of doping and electrical contacts, the polariton band structure clearly preserves its topological properties. At high excitation power the Mott density is exceeded leading to highly efficient lasing in the weak coupling regime. We report on the coexistence of both normal and topological insulating phases in InAs/GaSb bilayer quantum well induced by the built-in electric field tuned optically and electrically. The emergence of topological and normal insulating phases is assessed based on the evolution of the charge carrier densities, the resistivity dependence of the gap via in-plane magnetic fields and the thermal activation of carriers. For the Hall bar device tuned optically, we observe the fingerprints associated with the presence of only the topological insulating phase. For another Hall bar processed identically but with an additional top gate, the coexistence of normal and topological insulating phases is found by electrical tuning. Our finding paves the way for utilizing a new electro-optical tuning scheme to manipulate InAs/GaSb bilayer quantum wells to obtain trivial-topological insulating interfaces in the bulk rather than at the physical edge of the device.

In this work, we explore the potential of spin-based integrated devices using polariton waveguides that form codirectional couplers. For suitable coupler parameters, a transfer of condensates between the arms of the coupler, occurs leading to the observation of Josephson-like oscillations. The ability to tune the periodicity of these oscillations opens the way to the design of polaritonic circuits in which the directionality of the signal towards the output terminals can be controlled. We also investigate the response of the devices to linearly polarized excitation, delving into the dynamics of linear polarization at the output terminals of long couplers, providing valuable insights into the potential applications of spin-based polariton devices, including polariton switches and logic gates with efficient operation. Our results are supported by numerical simulations based on generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the dynamics of coherent polaritons in spatially non-uniform system. Artificial one- and two-dimensional lattices have emerged as a powerful platform for the emulation of lattice Hamiltonians, the fundamental study of collective many-body effects, and phenomena arising from non-trivial topology. Exciton-polaritons, bosonic part-light and part-matter quasiparticles, combine pronounced nonlinearities with the possibility of on-chip implementation. In this context, organic semiconductors embedded in microcavities have proven to be versatile candidates to study nonlinear many-body physics and bosonic condensation, and in contrast to most inorganic systems, they allow the use at ambient conditions since they host ultra-stable Frenkel excitons. We implement a well-controlled, high-quality optical lattice that accommodates light-matter quasiparticles. The realized polariton graphene presents with excellent cavity quality factors, showing distinct signatures of Dirac cone and flatband dispersions as well as polariton lasing at room temperature. This is realized by filling coupled dielectric microcavities with the fluorescent protein mCherry. We demonstrate the emergence of a coherent polariton condensate at ambient conditions, taking advantage of coupling conditions as precise and controllable as in state-of-the-art inorganic semiconductor-based systems, without the limitations of e.g. lattice matching in epitaxial growth. Two-photon interference is an indispensable resource in quantum photonics, but it is not straightforward to achieve. The cascaded generation of photon pairs contains intrinsic temporal correlations that negatively affect the ability of such sources to perform two-photon interference, thus hindering applications. We report on how such correlation interplays with decoherence and temporal postselection, and under which conditions temporal postselection could improve two-photon interference visibility. Our study identifies crucial parameters and points the way to a source with optimal performance.

Purcell-enhanced quantum dot single-photon emission in the telecom C-band from InAs quantum dots inside circular Bragg grating cavities is shown. The InAs quantum dots are grown by means of molecular beam epitaxy on an InP substrate and are embedded into a quaternary $\mathrm{In}_{0.53}\mathrm{Al}_{0.23}\mathrm{Ga}_{0.24}\mathrm{As}$ membrane structure. In a post-growth flip-chip process with subsequent substrate removal and electron beam-lithography, circular Bragg grating ("bullseye") resonators are defined. Micro-photoluminescence studies of the devices at cryogenic temperatures of T = 5 K reveal individual quantum dot emission lines into a pronounced cavity mode. Time-correlated single-photon counting measurements under above-band gap excitation yield Purcell-enhanced excitonic decay times of $\tau = (180 \pm 3)$ ps corresponding to a Purcell factor of $F_P = (6.7 \pm 0.6)$. Pronounced photon antibunching with a background limited $g^{(2)}(0) = (0.057 \pm 0.004)$ is observed, which demonstrates that the light originated mostly from one single quantum dot., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Solid-state quantum emitters embedded in circular Bragg resonators are attractive due to their ability to emit quantum states of light with high brightness and low multi-photon probability. As for any emitter-microcavity system, fabrication imperfections limit the spatial and spectral overlap of the emitter with the cavity mode, thus limiting their coupling strength. Here, we show that an initial spectral mismatch can be corrected after device fabrication by repeated wet chemical etching steps. We demonstrate ~16 nm wavelength tuning for optical modes in AlGaAs resonators on oxide, leading to a 4-fold Purcell enhancement of the emission of single embedded GaAs quantum dots. Numerical calculations reproduce the observations and suggest that the achievable performance of the resonator is only marginally affected in the explored tuning range. We expect the method to be applicable also to circular Bragg resonators based on other material platforms, thus increasing the device yield of cavity-enhanced solid-state quantum emitters.

Entangled photon pairs are an important resource for quantum cryptography schemes that go beyond point-to-point communication. Semiconductor Bragg-reflection waveguides are a promising photon-pair source due to mature fabrication, integrability, large transparency window in the telecom wavelength range, integration capabilities for electro-optical devices as well as a high second-order nonlinear coefficient. To increase performance we improved the fabrication of Bragg-reflection waveguides by employing fixed-beam-moving-stage optical lithography, low pressure and low chlorine concentration etching, and resist reflow. The reduction in sidewall roughness yields a low optical loss coefficient for telecom wavelength light of alpha_reflow = 0.08(6)mm^(-1). Owing to the decreased losses, we achieved a photon pair production rate of 8800(300)(mW*s*mm)^(-1) which is 15-fold higher than in previous samples.

Mass-deployable implementations for quantum communication require compact, reliable, and low-cost hardware solutions for photon generation, control and analysis. We present a fiber-pigtailed hybrid photonic circuit comprising nonlinear waveguides for photon-pair generation and a polymer interposer reaching 68dB of pump suppression and photon separation with >25dB polarization extinction ratio. The optical stability of the hybrid assembly enhances the quality of the entanglement, and the efficient background suppression and photon routing further reduce accidental coincidences. We thus achieve a 96(-8,+3)% concurrence and a 96(-5,+2)% fidelity to a Bell state. The generated telecom-wavelength, time-bin entangled photon pairs are ideally suited for distributing Bell pairs over fiber networks with low dispersion.

We present polarized |S|=0.99$\pm$0.01, and unpolarized |S|=0.03$\pm$0.01 emission from a single emitter embedded in a single, cylindrically symmetric device design. We show that the polarization stems from a position offset of the single emitter with respect to the cavity center, which breaks the cylindrical symmetry, and a position-dependent coupling to the frequency degenerate eigenmodes of the resonator structure. The experimental results are interpreted by using numerical simulations and by experimental mapping of the polarization-resolved far-field emission patterns. Concurrent natural time scales related to relaxation, recombination, trapping, and drifting processes rule the semiconductor heterostructures' response to external drives when charge carrier fluxes are induced. This paper highlights the role of stoichiometry not only for the quantitative tuning of the electron-hole dynamics but also for significant qualitative contrasts of time-resolved optical responses during the operation of resonant tunneling devices. Therefore, similar device architectures and different compositions have been compared to elucidate the correlation among structural parameters, radiative recombination processes, and electron-hole pair and minority carrier relaxation mechanisms. When these ingredients intermix with the electronic structure in Sb-based tunneling devices, it is proven possible to assess various time scales according to the intensity of the current flux, contrary to what has been observed in As-based tunneling devices with similar design and transport characteristics. These time scales are strongly affected not only by the filling process in the $\Gamma$ and L states in Sb-based double-barrier quantum wells but also by the small separation between these states, compared to similar heterostructures based on As., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to the Physical Review Applied journal

Many precision applications in the mid-infrared spectral range have strong constraints based on quantum effects that are expressed in particular noise characteristics. They limit, e.g., sensitivity and resolution of mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopic systems as well as the bit-error rate in optical free-space communication. Interband cascade lasers (ICLs) are a class of mid-infrared laser exploiting interband transitions in type-II band alignment geometry. They are currently gaining significant importance for mid-infrared applications from <3 {\mu}m to >6 {\mu}m wavelength, enabled by novel types of high-performance ICLs such as ring-cavity devices. Their noise-behavior is an important feature that still needs to be thoroughly analyzed, including its potential reduction with respect to the shot noise limit. In this work, we provide a comprehensive characterization of {\lambda} = 3.8 {\mu}m-emitting, continuous-wave ring-ICLs operating at room temperature. It is based on an in-depth study of their main physical intensity noise features, such as their bias-dependent intensity noise power spectral density (INPSD) and relative intensity noise (RIN). We obtain shot-noise-limited statistics for Fourier frequencies above 100 kHz. This is an important result for precision applications, e.g. interferometry or advanced spectroscopy, which benefit from exploiting the advantage of using such a shot-noise limited source, enhancing the setup sensitivity. Moreover, it is an important feature for novel quantum optics schemes including testing specific light states below the shot noise level, such as squeezed states.

We take advantage of the polariton bistability in semiconductor microcavities to estimate the interaction strength between lower exciton-polariton and dark exciton states. We combine the quasiresonant excitation of polaritons and the nominally forbidden two-photon excitation (TPE) of dark excitons in a GaAs microcavity. To this end, we use an ultranarrow linewidth cw laser for the TPE process that allows us to determine the energy of dark excitons with high spectral resolution. Our results evidence a sharp drop in the polariton transmission intensity and width of the hysteresis cycle when the TPE process is resonant with the dark exciton energy, highly compromising the bistability of the polariton condensate. This behavior demonstrates the existence of a small symmetry breaking such as that produced by an effective in-plane magnetic field, allowing us to directly excite the dark reservoir. We numerically reproduce the collapse of the hysteresis cycle with the increasing dark exciton population, treating the evolution of a polariton condensate in a one-mode approximation, coupled to the exciton reservoir via polariton-exciton scattering processes., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Creating single photons in the telecommunication wavelength range from semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) and interfacing them with spins of electrons or holes has been of high interest in recent years, with research mainly focusing on indium based QDs. However, there is not much data on the optical and spin properties of galliumantimonide (GaSb) QDs, despite it being a physically rich system with an indirect to direct bandgap crossover in the telecom wavelength range. Here, we investigate the (quantum-) optical properties of GaSb quantum dots, which are fabricated by filling droplet-etched nanoholes in an aluminum-galliumantimonide (AlGaSb) matrix. We observe photoluminescence (PL) features from isolated and highly symmetric QDs that exhibit narrow linewidth in the telecom S-band and show an excitonic fine structure splitting of $\Delta E=(12.0\pm0.5)\mu eV$. Moreover, we perform time-resolved measurements of the decay characteristics of an exciton and measure the second-order photon autocorrelation function of the charge complex to $g^{(2)}(0)=0.16\pm0.02$, revealing clear antibunching and thus proving the capability of this material platform to generate non-classical light.

Tuning GaAs-based quantum emitters to telecom wavelengths makes it possible to use the existing mature technology for applications in, e.g., long-haul ultra-secure communication in the fiber networks. A promising method re-developed recently is to use a metamorphic InGaAs buffer that redshifts the emission by reducing strain. However, the impact of such a buffer causes also a simultaneous modification of other quantum dot properties. Knowledge of these effects is crucial for actual implementations of QD-based non-classical light sources for quantum communication schemes. Here, we thoroughly study single GaAs-based quantum dots grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on specially designed, digital-alloy InGaAs metamorphic buffers. With a set of structures varying in the buffer indium content and providing quantum dot emission through the telecom spectral range up to 1.6 $\mu$m, we analyze the impact of the buffer and its composition on QD structural and optical properties. We identify the mechanisms of quantum dot emission shift with varying buffer composition. We also look into the charge trapping processes and compare excitonic properties for different growth conditions with single-dot emission successfully shifted to both, the second and the third telecom windows., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

We revisit and extend the standard bosonic interpretation of interlayer excitons in the moir\'e potential of twisted heterostructures of transition-metal dichalcogenides. In our experiments, we probe a high quality MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ van der Waals bilayer heterostructure via density-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy and reveal strongly developed, unconventional spectral shifts of the emergent moir\'e exciton resonances. The observation of saturating blueshifts of successive exciton resonances allow us to explain their physics in terms of a model utilizing fermionic saturable absorbers. This approach is strongly inspired by established quantum-dot models, which underlines the close analogy of interlayer excitons trapped in pockets of the moir\'e potential, and quantum emitters with discrete eigenstates.

We report lasing of moir\'e trapped interlayer excitons (IXs) by integrating a pristine hBN-encapsulated MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayer into a high-$Q$ ($>10^4$) nanophotonic cavity. We control the cavity-IX detuning using a magnetic field and measure their dipolar coupling strength to be $78 \pm 4\ \mathrm{\mu eV}$, fully consistent with the 82 $\mathrm{\mu eV}$ predicted by theory. The emission from the cavity mode shows clear threshold-like behavior as the transition is tuned into resonance with the cavity. We observe a superlinear power dependence accompanied by a narrowing of the linewidth as the distinct features of lasing. The onset and prominence of these threshold-like behaviors are pronounced at resonance while weak off-resonance. Our results show that a lasing transition can be induced in interacting moir\'e IXs with macroscopic coherence extending over the length scale of the cavity mode. Such systems raise interesting perspectives for low-power switching and synaptic nanophotonic devices using two-dimensional materials.

Excitons in quantum dots are excellent sources of polarization-entangled photon pairs, but a quantitative understanding of their interaction with the nuclear spin bath is still missing. Here we investigate the role of hyperfine energy shifts using experimentally accessible parameters and derive an upper limit to the achievable entanglement fidelity. Our results are consistent with all available literature, indicate that spin-noise is often the dominant process limiting the entanglement in InGaAs quantum dots, and suggest routes to alleviate its effect.

Scalable quantum photonic technologies require low-loss integration of many identical single-photon sources with photonic circuitry on a chip. Relatively complex quantum photonic circuits have already been demonstrated; however, sources used so far relied on parametric-down-conversion. Hence, the efficiency and scalability are intrinsically limited by the probabilistic nature of the sources. Quantum emitter-based single-photon sources are free of this limitation, but frequency matching of multiple emitters within a single circuit remains a challenge. In this work, we demonstrate a key component in this regard in the form of a fully monolithic GaAs circuit combing two frequency-matched quantum dot single-photon sources interconnected with a low-loss on-chip beamsplitter connected via single-mode ridge waveguides. This device enabled us to perform a two-photon interference experiment on-chip with visibility reaching 66%, limited by the coherence of the emitters. Our device could be further scaled up, providing a clear path to increase the complexity of quantum circuits toward fully scalable integrated quantum technologies.

A quantum-light source that delivers photons with a high brightness and a high degree of entanglement is fundamental for the development of efficient entanglement-based quantum-key distribution systems. Among all possible candidates, epitaxial quantum dots are currently emerging as one of the brightest sources of highly entangled photons. However, the optimization of both brightness and entanglement currently requires different technologies that are difficult to combine in a scalable manner. In this work, we overcome this challenge by developing a novel device consisting of a quantum dot embedded in a circular Bragg resonator, in turn, integrated onto a micromachined piezoelectric actuator. The resonator engineers the light-matter interaction to empower extraction efficiencies up to 0.69(4). Simultaneously, the actuator manipulates strain fields that tune the quantum dot for the generation of entangled photons with corrected fidelities to a maximally entangled state up to 0.96(1). This hybrid technology has the potential to overcome the limitations of the key rates that plague QD-based entangled sources for entanglement-based quantum key distribution and entanglement-based quantum networks.

Two-photon resonant excitation of the biexciton-exciton cascade in a quantum dot generates highly polarization-entangled photon pairs in a near-deterministic way. However, the ultimate level of achievable entanglement is still debated. Here, we observe the impact of the laser-induced AC-Stark effect on the quantum dot emission spectra and on entanglement. For increasing pulse-duration/lifetime ratios and pump powers, decreasing values of concurrence are recorded. Linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is of particular interest for memory, electronics, and sensing applications, especially when it does not saturate over a wide range of magnetic fields. One of its principal origins is local mobility or density inhomogeneities, often structural, which in the Parish-Littlewood theory leads to an unsaturating LMR proportional to mobility. Structural disorder, however, also tends to limit the mobility and hence the overall LMR amplitude. An alternative route to achieve large LMR is via non-structural inhomogeneities which do not affect the zero field mobility, like magnetic domains. Here, linear positive magnetoresistance caused by magnetic texture is reported in \ch{LaTiO3}/\ch{SrTiO3} heterostructures. The LMR amplitude reaches up to 6500\% at 9T. This colossal value is understood by the unusual combination of a very high thin film mobility, up to 40 000 cm$^2$/V.s, and a very large coverage of low-mobility regions. These regions correlate with a striped magnetic structure, compatible with a spiral magnetic texture in the \ch{LaTiO3} film, revealed by low temperature Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. These results provide a novel route for the engineering of large-LMR devices.

The quest for the realization of effective quantum state discrimination strategies is of great interest for quantum information technology, as well as for fundamental studies. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new and more efficient methods to implement discrimination protocols for quantum states. Among the others, single photon implementations are more advisable, because of their inherent security advantage in quantum communication scenarios. In this work, we present the experimental realization of a protocol employing a time-multiplexing strategy to optimally discriminate among eight non-orthogonal states, encoded in the four-dimensional Hilbert space spanning both the polarization degree of freedom and photon energy. The experiment, built on a custom-designed bulk optics analyser setup and single photons generated by a nearly deterministic solid-state source, represents a benchmarking example of minimum error discrimination with actual quantum states, requiring only linear optics and two photodetectors to be realized. Our work paves the way for more complex applications and delivers a novel approach towards high-dimensional quantum encoding and decoding operations.

We present an optical study of various device designs for electrically contactable circular Bragg grating cavities in labyrinth geometries. To create an electrical connection between the central disk and the surrounding membrane, which are separated through air gaps, we introduce connections between the adjacent rings. We propose to rotate these connections, creating a labyrinth like structure, to disable waveguiding and keep the mode confinement. To investigate how different arrangement and size of the connections affect the optical properties and to find the optimal design, six different layouts with either 3-fold or 4-fold symmetry and one with 2-fold symmetry are investigated experimentally and by numerical simulations. Reflectivity measurements and simulations show that rotating the connections improves the mode confinement, far-field pattern and Purcell factor compared to layouts with connections arranged in straight lines. We compare results between different layouts for different connection widths and perform polarization resolved measurements to investigate whether the connections create asymmetries in the photonic confinement that would impede the performance of the device.

Long-term quantum coherence constitutes one of the main challenges when engineering quantum devices. However, easily accessible means to quantify complex decoherence mechanisms are not readily available, nor are sufficiently stable systems. We harness novel phase-space methods - expressed through non-Gaussian convolutions of highly singular Glauber-Sudarshan quasiprobabilities - to dynamically monitor quantum coherence in polariton condensates with significantly enhanced coherence times. Via intensity- and time-resolved reconstructions of such phase-space functions from homodyne detection data, we probe the systems's resourcefulness for quantum information processing up to the nanosecond regime. Our experimental findings are confirmed through numerical simulations for which we develop an approach that renders established algorithms compatible with our methodology. In contrast to commonly applied phase-space functions, our distributions can be directly sampled from measured data, including uncertainties, and yield a simple operational measure of quantum coherence via the distribution's variance in phase. Optical spectroscopy of ultimately thin materials has significantly enhanced our understanding of collective excitations in low-dimensional semiconductors. This is particularly reflected by the rich physics of excitons in atomically thin crystals which uniquely arises from the interplay of strong Coulomb correlation, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and lattice geometry. Here we extend the field by reporting the observation of room temperature excitons in a material of non-trivial global topology. We study the fundamental optical excitation spectrum of a single layer of bismuth atoms epitaxially grown on a SiC substrate (hereafter bismuthene or Bi/SiC) which has been established as a large-gap, two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator. Strongly developed optical resonances are observed to emerge around the direct gap at the K and K' points of the Brillouin zone, indicating the formation of bound excitons with considerable oscillator strength. These experimental findings are corroborated, concerning both the character of the excitonic resonances as well as their energy scale, by ab-initio \emph{GW} and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations, confirming strong Coulomb interaction effects in these optical excitations. Our observations provide the first evidence of excitons in a 2D QSH insulator at room temperature, with excitonic and topological physics deriving from the very same electronic structure.

The rotational response of quantum condensed fluids is strikingly distinct from rotating classical fluids, especially notable for the excitation and ordering of quantized vortex ensembles. Although widely studied in conservative systems, the dynamics of rotating open-dissipative superfluids such as exciton-polariton condensates remain largely unexplored, as it requires high-frequency rotation whilst avoiding resonantly driving the condensate. We create a rotating polariton condensate at GHz frequencies by off-resonantly pumping with a rotating optical stirrer composed of the time-dependent interference of two frequency-offset, structured laser modes. Acquisition of angular momentum exceeding the critical $1\hbar$/particle is directly measured, accompanied by the deterministic nucleation and capture of quantized vortices with a handedness controlled by the pump rotation direction. We present GaSb-based interband cascade lasers emitting at a center wavelength of 6.12 $\mu$m at 20$^\circ$C in continuous-wave operation up to a maximum operating temperature of 40$^\circ$C. Pulsed measurements based on broad area devices show improved performance by applying the recently published approach of adjusting the GaInSb layer thickness in the active region to reduce the valence intersubband absorption. The W-quantum well design adjustment and the optimization of the electron injector, to rebalance the electron and hole concentrations in the active quantum wells, improved the device performance, yielding room temperature current densities as low as 0.5 kA/cm$^2$ for broad area devices under pulsed operation. As a direct result of this improvement the long wavelength limit for GaSb-based ICLs in continuous wave operation could be extended. For an epi-side down mounted 23 $\mu$m wide and 2 mm long device with 9 active stages and high-reflectivity back facet the threshold power is below 1 W and the optical output power is over 25 mW at 20$^\circ$C in continuous-wave mode. Such low-threshold and low-power consumption interband cascade lasers are especially attractive for mobile and compact sensing systems.

The quantification of the entanglement present in a physical system is of para\-mount importance for fundamental research and many cutting-edge applications. Currently, achieving this goal requires either a priori knowledge on the system or very demanding experimental procedures such as full state tomography or collective measurements. Here, we demonstrate that by employing neural networks we can quantify the degree of entanglement without needing to know the full description of the quantum state. Our method allows for direct quantification of the quantum correlations using an incomplete set of local measurements. Despite using undersampled measurements, we achieve a quantification error of up to an order of magnitude lower than the state-of-the-art quantum tomography. Furthermore, we achieve this result employing networks trained using exclusively simulated data. Finally, we derive a method based on a convolutional network input that can accept data from various measurement scenarios and perform, to some extent, independently of the measurement device., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Engineering the properties of quantum materials via strong light-matter coupling is a compelling research direction with a multiplicity of modern applications. Those range from modifying charge transport in organic molecules, steering particle correlation and interactions, and even controlling chemical reactions. Here, we study the modification of the material properties via strong coupling and demonstrate an effective inversion of the excitonic band-ordering in a monolayer of WSe2 with spin-forbidden, optically dark ground state. In our experiments, we harness the strong light-matter coupling between cavity photon and the high energy, spin-allowed bright exciton, and thus creating two bright polaritonic modes in the optical bandgap with the lower polariton mode pushed below the WSe2 dark state. We demonstrate that in this regime the commonly observed luminescence quenching stemming from the fast relaxation to the dark ground state is prevented, which results in the brightening of this intrinsically dark material. We probe this effective brightening by temperature-dependent photoluminescence, and we find an excellent agreement with a theoretical model accounting for the inversion of the band ordering and phonon-assisted polariton relaxation.

Exciton-polaritons have become an emerging platform for implementing non-Hermitian physics. The implementation commonly requires control of both the real and imaginary parts of the eigenmodes of the system. We present an experimental method to achieve this purpose using microcavities with sub-wavelength gratings as reflectors. The reflectivity and reflection phase of the grating can be changed by its geometric parameters and they determine the energy and linewidth of the polariton modes. We demonstrate that this method allows a wide range of possible polariton energy and linewidth, suitable for implementing non-Hermitian polariton systems with coupled modes.

We perform extended numerical studies to maximize the overall photon coupling efficiency of fiber-coupled quantum dot single-photon sources emitting in the near-infrared and telecom regime. Using the finite element method, we optimize the photon extraction and fiber-coupling efficiency of quantum dot single-photon sources based on micromesas, microlenses, circular Bragg grating cavities and micropillars. The numerical simulations which consider the entire system consisting of the quantum dot source itself, the coupling lens, and the single-mode fiber yield overall photon coupling efficiencies of up to 83%. Our work provides objectified comparability of different fiber-coupled single-photon sources and proposes optimized geometries for the realization of practical and highly efficient quantum dot single-photon sources.

We describe how a coherent optical drive that is near-resonant with the upper rungs of a three-level ladder system, in conjunction with a short pulse excitation, can be used to provide a frequency-tunable source of on-demand single photons. Using an intuitive master equation model, we identify two distinct regimes of device operation: (i) for a resonant drive, the source operates using the Autler-Townes effect, and (ii) for an off-resonant drive, the source exploits the ac Stark effect. The former regime allows for a large frequency tuning range but coherence suffers from timing jitter effects, while the latter allows for high indistinguishability and efficiency, but with a restricted tuning bandwidth due to high required drive strengths and detunings. We show how both these negative effects can be mitigated by using an optical cavity to increase the collection rate of the desired photons. We apply our general theory to semiconductor quantum dots, which have proven to be excellent single-photon sources, and find that scattering of acoustic phonons leads to excitation-induced dephasing and increased population of the higher energy level which limits the bandwidth of frequency tuning achievable while retaining high indistinguishability. Despite this, for realistic cavity and quantum dot parameters, indistinguishabilities of over $90\%$ are achievable for energy shifts of up to hundreds of $\mu$eV, and near-unity indistinguishabilities for energy shifts up to tens of $\mu$eV. Additionally, we clarify the often-overlooked differences between an idealized Hong-Ou-Mandel two-photon interference experiment and its usual implementation with an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, pointing out the subtle differences in the single-photon visibility associated with these different setups., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures

Resonance fluorescence of two-level quantum systems has emerged as a powerful tool in quantum information processing. Extension of this approach to higher-level systems provides new opportunities for quantum optics applications. Here we introduce a coherent driving scheme of a three-level ladder system utilizing Autler-Townes and ac Stark effects by resonant excitation with two laser fields. We propose theoretically and demonstrate experimentally the feasibility of this approach towards all-optical spectral tuning of quantum dot-based single-photon sources and investigate photon indistinguishability and purity levels. Our tuning technique allows for fast optical control of the quantum emitter spectrum which paves the way towards temporal and spectral shaping of the single photons, formation of topological Floquet states or generation of high-dimensional frequency-encoded quantum states of light.

The generation of photon pairs in single quantum dots is based on a process that is, in its nature, deterministic. However, an efficient extraction of these photon pairs from a high-index semiconductor host material requires engineering of the photonic environment. We report on a micropillar-based device featuring an extraction efficiency of 69.4(10)$\%$ that is achieved by harnessing a broadband operation suitable for extraction of photon pairs emitted from a single quantum dot. Opposing the approaches that rely solely on Purcell enhancement to realize the enhancement of the extraction efficiency, our solution exploits a suppression of the emission into the modes other than the cavity mode. Our technological implementation requires modest fabrication effort enabling higher device yields that can be scaled up to meet the growing needs of quantum technologies. Furthermore, the design of the device can be further optimized to allow for an extraction efficiency of 85$\%$.

Optical trapping has been proven to be an effective method of separating exciton-polariton condensates from the incoherent high-energy excitonic reservoir located at the pumping laser position. This technique has significantly improved the coherent properties of exciton-polariton condensates, when compared to a quasi-homogeneous spot excitation scheme. Here, we compare two experimental methods on a sample, where a single spot excitation experiment allowed only to observe photonic lasing in the weak coupling regime. In contrast, the ring-shaped excitation resulted in the two-threshold behavior, where an exciton-polariton condensate manifests itself at the first and photon lasing at the second threshold. Both lasing regimes are trapped in an optical potential created by the pump. We interpret the origin of this confining potential in terms of repulsive interactions of polaritons with the reservoir at the first threshold and as a result of the excessive free-carrier induced refractive index change of the microcavity at the second threshold. This observation offers a way to achieve multiple phases of photonic condensates in samples, e.g., containing novel materials as an active layer, where two-threshold behavior is impossible to achieve with a single excitation spot., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Solid-state quantum emitters with manipulable spin-qubits are promising platforms for quantum communication applications. Although such light-matter interfaces could be realized in many systems only a few allow for light emission in the telecom bands necessary for long-distance quantum networks. Here, we propose and implement a new optically active solid-state spin-qubit based on a hole confined in a single InAs/GaAs quantum dot grown on an InGaAs metamorphic buffer layer emitting photons in the C-band. We lift the hole spin-degeneracy using an external magnetic field and demonstrate hole injection, initialization, read-out and complete coherent control using picosecond optical pulses. These results showcase a new solid-state spin-qubit platform compatible with preexisting optical fibre networks.

We report on the linear polarization of polariton condensates in a codirectional coupler that allows evanescent coupling between adjacent waveguides. We observe polarization-dependent intensity oscillations in the output terminal of the coupler that we identify as the mode beating between the linear-polarized eigenmodes.

The emergence of spatial and temporal coherence of light emitted from solid-state systems is a fundamental phenomenon, rooting in a plethora of microscopic processes. It is intrinsically aligned with the control of light-matter coupling, and canonical for laser oscillation. However, it also emerges in the superradiance of multiple, phase-locked emitters, and more recently, coherence and long-range order have been investigated in bosonic condensates of thermalized light, as well as in exciton-polaritons driven to a ground state via stimulated scattering. Here, we experimentally show that the interaction between photons in a Fabry-Perot microcavity and excitons in an atomically thin WSe$_2$ layer is sufficient such that the system enters the hybridized regime of strong light-matter coupling at ambient conditions. Via Michelson interferometry, we capture clear evidence of increased spatial and temporal coherence of the emitted light from the spatially confined system ground-state. The coherence build-up is accompanied by a threshold-like behaviour of the emitted light intensity, which is a fingerprint of a polariton laser effect. Valley-physics is manifested in the presence of an external magnetic field, which allows us to manipulate K and K' polaritons via the Valley-Zeeman-effect. Our findings are of high application relevance, as they confirm the possibility to use atomically thin crystals as simple and versatile components of coherent light-sources, and in valleytronic applications at room temperature., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We theoretically and experimentally investigate quantum features of an interacting light-matter system from a multidisciplinary perspective, unifying approaches from semiconductor physics, quantum optics, and quantum information science. To this end, we quantify the amount of quantum coherence that results from the quantum superposition of Fock states, constituting a measure of the resourcefulness of the produced state for modern quantum protocols. As an archetypal example of a hybrid light-matter interface, we study a polariton condensate and implement a numerical model to predict its properties. Our simulation is confirmed by our proof-of-concept experiment in which we measure and analyze the phase-space distributions of the emitted light. Specifically, we drive a polariton microcavity across the condensation threshold and observe the transition from an incoherent thermal state to a coherent state in the emission, thus confirming the build-up of quantum coherence in the condensate itself., Comment: 10 figures, 15 pages

Engineering non-linear hybrid light-matter states in tailored optical lattices is a central research strategy for the simulation of complex Hamiltonians. Excitons in atomically thin crystals are an ideal active medium for such purposes, since they couple strongly with light and bear the potential to harness giant non-linearities and interactions while presenting a simple sample-processing and room temperature operability. We demonstrate lattice polaritons, based on an open, high-quality optical cavity, with an imprinted photonic lattice strongly coupled to excitons in a WS$_{2}$ monolayer. We experimentally observe the emergence of the canonical band-structure of particles in a one-dimensional lattice at room temperature, and demonstrate frequency reconfigurability over a spectral window exceeding 12 meV, as well as the systematic variation of the nearest neighbour coupling, reflected by a tuneability in the bandwidth of the p-band polaritons by 7 meV. The technology presented in this work is a critical demonstration towards reconfigurable photonic emulators operated with non-linear photonic fluids, offering a simple experimental implementation and working at ambient conditions.

Bloch oscillations are a phenomenon well known from quantum mechanics where electrons in a lattice experience an oscillatory motion in the presence of an electric field gradient. Here, we report on Bloch oscillations of hybrid light-matter particles, called exciton-polaritons, being confined in an array of coupled microcavity waveguides. To this end, we carefully design the waveguides, widths and their mutual couplings such that a constant energy gradient is induced perpendicular to the direction of motion of the propagating exciton-polaritons. This technique allows us to directly observe and study Bloch oscillations in real- and momentum-space. Furthermore, we support our experimental findings by numerical simulations based on a modified Gross-Pitaevskii approach. Interacting bosonic particles in artificial lattices have proven to be a powerful tool for the investigation of exotic phases of matter as well as phenomena resulting from non-trivial topology. Exciton-polaritons, bosonic quasi-particles of light and matter, have shown to combine the on-chip benefits of optical systems with strong interactions, inherited form their matter character. Technologically significant semiconductor platforms, however, strictly require cryogenic temperatures for operability. In this paper, we demonstrate exciton-polariton lasing for topological defects emerging form the imprinted lattice structure at room temperature. We utilize a monomeric red fluorescent protein derived from DsRed of Discosoma sea anemones, hosting highly stable Frenkel excitons. Using a patterned mirror cavity, we tune the lattice potential landscape of a linear Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain to design topological defects at domain boundaries and at the edge. In spectroscopic experiments, we unequivocally demonstrate polariton lasing from these topological defects.
