O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar a madeira de paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex. Ducke) quanto aos seus aspectos dendrométricos, e avaliar o rendimento em laminação de madeira nas idades de cinco, seis e sete anos. O estudo foi conduzido em plantios comerciais localizados no município de Paragominas, PA. Para isso, 180 árvores-amostra em espaçamento 4 x 4 m foram derrubadas e cubadas rigorosamente. Num segundo momento as toras foram divididas em toretes e os toretes foram laminados. Dessa forma foi possível visualizar as perdas no processo, verificar o rendimento médio em laminação de madeira para a espécie e avaliar possíveis influências das variáveis idade e classe de diâmetro. Em relação aos aspectos dendrométricos, foram abordadas as variáveis diâmetro, altura e fator de forma, para verificar se o crescimento da espécie pode se comparar a de outras, como no caso do eucalipto. Também foram testados modelos de volume total para estimar tanto o volume das árvores quanto o volume das lâminas de paricá. Além disso, foram testados modelos hipsométricos para estimar a altura total das árvores da espécie. Em relação às características dendrométricas, os resultados obtidos, nesta situação, mostraram que o paricá tem potencial para ser utilizado comercialmente na região estudada. A espécie teve um bom crescimento tanto em diâmetro quanto em altura, apresentando fator de forma médio superior a de espécies tradicionais como no caso do eucalipto. Quanto às equações de volume total, no geral, o modelo V=β_0 D^(β_1 ) H^(β_2 ) ε mostrou-se mais preciso tanto para estimar o volume das árvores quanto para estimar o volume das lâminas. Para os modelos hipsométricos, foi observado que em cada idade houve um modelo que fosse mais preciso para estimar a altura total das árvores de paricá. Para as idades de cinco, seis e sete anos foram respectivamente: H=e^((β_0+β_1⁄D) ) ε, H=e^((β_0+β_1⁄D^2 ) ) e H-1,3=D^2/(β_0+β_1⁄D 〖+β〗_2⁄D^2 +β_3⁄I)+ε. Quanto ao rendimento em laminação, o paricá apresentou uma média de 50,31%, compatível com espécies de outros gêneros, obtendo menores perdas para árvores com maiores diâmetros. Em relação à idade, o paricá apresentou rendimentos em laminação superiores para as maiores idades provavelmente pelo fato das árvores apresentarem maiores diâmetros. Quanto à comparação estatística dos rendimentos na laminação de madeira de paricá, verificou-se que somente entre as idades de 5 e 7 anos houve diferença estatística pelo teste t. Verificou-se também uma influência do diâmetro no rendimento da laminação, sendo que o aumento de diâmetro promoveu o aumento de rendimento. Em relação aos modelos de volume avaliados para estimar a produção de lâminas, estes tiveram desempenhos semelhantes nas diferentes idades em termos de precisão, com ligeira vantagem para o modelo de Schumacher e Hall.

33. Effect of Nancy Reagan's mastectomy on choice of surgery for breast cancer by US women.

Abstract

Context: While the actions of popular figures are believed to influence the behavior of the general public, including health care decisions, little research has examined such an effect.Objective: To determine whether a temporal association exists between use of breast-conserving surgery (BCS) for treatment of breast cancer and Nancy Reagan's mastectomy in October 1987.Design/setting: Population-based observational cohort study.Patients: Two sources of data: (1) 82 230 women aged 30 years and older who were included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results tumor registry because of a diagnosis of local or regional breast cancer from 1983 to 1990; and (2) 80057 female Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 to 79 years who received inpatient surgery for local or regional breast cancer in 1987 or 1988.Main Outcome Measure: Percentage of use of BCS vs mastectomy over time.Results: Compared with women undergoing surgery for breast cancer in the third quarter of 1987 (just prior to Mrs Reagan's mastectomy), women were 25% less likely to undergo BCS in the fourth quarter of 1987 (odds ratio [OR], 0.75; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66-0.85) and in the first quarter of 1988 (OR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.67-0.86). In subsequent quarters, the rate returned to the baseline. In multivariate analyses, the decline was significant among white but not nonwhite women. It was most prominent among women aged 50 to 79 years in the central and southern regions of the country, and most sustained among women living in areas with lower levels of income and education.Conclusions: Celebrity role models can influence decisions about medical care. Abstract

Study Objective: To determine the relative importance of adiposity and fat distribution to cardiovascular risk profile.Design: A cross-sectional study.Setting: Clinical research center funded by the National Institutes of Health.Patients: Convenience sample of 33 healthy premenopausal women with a wide range of body weight who did not have diabetes mellitus, hirsutism and virilism, gynecologic disorder, cardiac disease, or hypertension. Women participating in exercise or dietary programs or taking medication were excluded. All subjects completed the study.Interventions: Total body fat mass was determined by hydrostatic weighting, and fat distribution was assessed by subscapular skinfold thickness, subscapular-to-triceps skinfold ratio, the waist-to-hip ratio, and computed tomography. Cardiovascular risk was assessed by the serum insulin response during oral glucose stimulation; levels of triglycerides and total cholesterol; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to total cholesterol concentrations; and systolic and diastolic blood pressures.Measurements and Main Results: The anthropometric parameters chosen were significantly associated with the cardiovascular risk profile (P less than 0.001). Visceral fat distribution assessed by computed tomography accounted for a significantly greater degree of variance in the cardiovascular risk factors than the total body fat mass (P less than 0.05). The cumulative insulin response was the primary metabolic variable relating the anthropometric indices to cardiovascular risk.Conclusions: Intra-abdominal fat deposition constitutes a greater cardiovascular risk than obesity alone. Summary: Several markers of growth and biochemical development in the rat were studied after administration of prostacyclin (PGI2) and 16, 16-dimethyl prostaglandin E2(16, 16DM PGE2). Intermittent administration of PGI2for 3 days to 10- and 19-day-old animals, with subsequent sacrifice at 14 and 23 days, resulted in significant dose related decreases in growth at 23 days. Total sucrase and maltase (glucoamylase) activities were elevated compared to controls at 14 days. Total activities of these enzymes were decreased in postweaned 23-day-old animals, but specific activities per mg intestinal protein were not significantly different. 16,16DM PGE2administered continuously between day 10–16 of life caused alterations in growth as well as increases in sucrase and maltase (glucoamylase) activities. Exogenously administered prostaglandins, therefore, are associated with altered growth and markers of biochemical development in the rat.

39. Alcohol consumption and ischemic heart disease mortality: are time-series correlations meaningful?

Abstract

Recently, time-series correlations of aggregated data have been used to demonstrate the length of latency periods for environmental factors, such as economic conditions and alcohol consumption, in influencing heart disease mortality. Latency periods were specified by lagging mortality rates relative to the economic indicators or rates of alcohol consumption until the highest correlations were achieved. The tendency has been to interpret these correlations without regard to whether the latency periods described are biologically plausible. The authors have identified four models which represent all the possible outcomes of correlational studies of time-series data. Using United States and Canadian mortality rates in relationship to alcohol consumption, they have demonstrated the application of each of these models. For three of the four models, the time-series (lag) correlations are uniform regardless of the number of years mortality is lagged relative to alcohol consumption, and this uniformity does not permit a latency period to be identified. Only the lag correlations between two nonlinear variables show variations over time, depending on the degree of correspondence between the increasing and decreasing line segments of the two curves. Correlations ranging from high positive to high negative are possible, and several peak correlations (positive and negative) can occur. However, the biologic interpretation of multiple peaks with the same or different signs is problematic. The authors conclude that time-series correlations of aggregated data are not useful for the study of latency periods, and that analysis of time-series correlations for this purpose can be at best ambiguous, and at worst, completely misleading.
