Abstract

For commercial grade electronic devices, stable structures are required to ensure a long device life span. When such devices contain nanomaterials like graphene, it is crucial that these materials resist industrial processes and harsh environments. For environments that contain water, graphene delamination is a notorious drawback, as water intercalation and eventually liftoff readily occur in aqueous and especially in alkaline solutions. This limitation renders graphene incompatible with key wafer-processing steps in the semiconductor industry. In this work, a covalent pyrene-based adhesion layer is synthesized in a facile, two-step procedure. Through {\pi}-{\pi} interactions, the adhesion of graphene to silicon wafers was maintained under conditions that resemble harsh processes, i.e. acidic and alkaline solutions, several organic solvents, and sonication. Moreover, they could be produced with a device measurement yield up to 99.7% and reproducible device-to-device electronic performance on 4-inch silicon wafers. Our results show that a straightforward functionalization of silicon wafers with an adhesive layer can be directly applicable in industrial-scale fabrication processes, giving access to robust graphene field effect devices that are built to last long.

Abstract

The epitaxial growth of the polar GaP(100) on the nonpolar Si(100) substrate suffers from inevitable defects at the antiphase domain boundaries, resulting from mono-atomic steps on the Si(100) surface. Stabilization of Si(100) substrate surfaces with arsenic is a promising technological step enabling the preparation of Si substrates with double atomic steps and reduced density of the APDs. In this paper, 4-50 nm thick GaP epitaxial films were grown on As-terminated Si(100) substrates with different types of doping, miscuts, and As-surface termination by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The GaP(As)/Si(100) heterostructures were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) sputtering and by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). We found residuals of arsenic atoms in the GaP lattice (0.2-0.3 at.%) and a localization of As atoms at the GaP(As)/Si(100) interface (1 at.%). Deconvolution of core level peaks revealed interface core level shifts. In As core levels, chemical shifts between 0.5-0.8 eV were measured and identified by angle-resolved XPS measurements. Similar valence band offset (VBO) values of 0.6 eV were obtained, regardless of the doping type of Si substrate, Si substrate miscut or type of As-terminated Si substrate surface. The band alignment diagram of the heterostructure was deduced.

4. Risk assessment for PFOA and kidney cancer based on a pooled analysis of two studies.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been associated with kidney cancer in human studies. METHODS: We conducted a pooled analysis of two large studies of PFOA and renal cell carcinoma (RCC, the most common type of kidney cancer); one from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) (324 cases and controls), and a second from the C8 Science Panel (103 cases and 511 controls). Serum PFOA levels were estimated a median of 8 years before diagnosis. Analyses were conducted via conditional logistic regression. Lifetime risk of kidney cancer per unit serum PFOA concentration and per unit dose were calculated. RESULTS: The 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles of serum PFOA levels were 4.8, 7.3, and 23.9 ng/ml for the pooled analysis. The preferred model for the pooled datawas a two-piece linear spline model (knot at 12.5 ng/ml serum PFOA); the log odds of RCC increased 0.1349 per 1 ng/ml increase in serum PFOA up to the knot (eg, an OR of 2.02 (1.45-2.80) from the median to the knot), and was flat thereafter. The estimated lifetime excess risk (cancer slope factor) with an exposure of 1 ng/ml was 0.0018, similar to the excess risk of 0.0026 recently reported by CalEPA based on different methods. Assuming a serum half-life of 2.3 years and a distribution volume of 170 ml/kg for PFOA, our results are equivalent to 0.0128 per ng/kg/d of PFOA intake. To limit excess lifetime kidney cancer risk to 1/1,000,000, our data suggest a limit of 0.0015 ng/L (0.0015 ppt) for PFOA in drinking water, similar to CalEPAs proposed Public Health Goal and the new US EPA Drinking Water Health Advisory. CONCLUSIONS: Our results correspond reasonably well with cancer slope factors developed by other investigators using published summary data, and suggest drinking water limits similar to new recommendations by the US EPA.

Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. Abstract

The Algorithms for Lattice Fermions package provides a general code for the finite-temperature and projective auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. The code is engineered to be able to simulate any model that can be written in terms of sums of single-body operators, of squares of single-body operators and single-body operators coupled to a bosonic field with given dynamics. The package includes five pre-defined model classes: SU(N) Kondo, SU(N) Hubbard, SU(N) t-V and SU(N) models with long range Coulomb repulsion on honeycomb, square and N-leg lattices, as well as $Z_2$ unconstrained lattice gauge theories coupled to fermionic and $Z_2$ matter. An implementation of the stochastic Maximum Entropy method is also provided. Abstract

During the formation of Si nanocrystals (Si NC) in Si$_x$C$_{1-x}$ layers via solid-phase crystallization, the unintended formation of nanocrystalline SiC reduces the minority carrier lifetime and therefore the performance of Si$_x$C$_{1-x}$ as an absorber layer in solar cells. A significant reduction in the annealing time may suppress the crystallization of the SiC matrix while maintaining the formation of Si NC. In this study, we investigated the crystallization of stoichiometric SiC and Si-rich SiC using conventional rapid thermal annealing (RTA) and nonequilibrium millisecond range flash lamp annealing (FLA). The investigated Si$_x$C$_{1-x}$ films were prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition and annealed at temperatures from 700${\deg}$C to 1100${\deg}$C for RTA and at flash energies between 34 J/cm$^2$ and 62 J/cm$^2$ for FLA. GIXRD and FTIR were conducted to investigate hydrogen effusion, Si and SiC NC growth, and SiC crystallinity. Both the Si content and the choice of the annealing process affect the crystallization behavior. It is shown that under certain conditions, FLA can be successfully utilized for the formation of Si NC in a SiC matrix, which closely resembles Si NC in a SiC matrix achieved by RTA. The samples must have excess Si, and the flash energy should not exceed 40 J/cm$^2$ and 47 J/cm$^2$ for Si$_{0.63}$C$_{0.37}$ and Si$_{0.77}$C$_{0.23}$ samples, respectively. Under these conditions, FLA succeeds in producing Si NC of a given size in less crystalline SiC than RTA does. This result is discussed in terms of nucleation and crystal growth using classical crystallization theory. For FLA and RTA samples, an opposite relationship between NC size and Si content was observed and attributed either to the dependence of H effusion on Si content or to the optical absorption properties of the materials, which also depend on the Si content.

Abstract

Proton-proton correlations were observed for the two-proton decays of the ground states of $^{19}$Mg and $^{16}$Ne. The trajectories of the respective decay products, $^{17}$Ne+p+p and $^{14}$O+p+p, were measured by using a tracking technique with microstrip detectors. These data were used to reconstruct the angular correlations of fragments projected on planes transverse to the precursor momenta. The measured three-particle correlations reflect a genuine three-body decay mechanism and allowed us to obtain spectroscopic information on the precursors with valence protons in the $sd$ shell., Comment: 5 pages 6 figures

23. The Evolution of Black Hole Mass and Spin in Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract

We argue that supermassive black hole growth in AGN occurs via sequences of randomly--oriented accretion discs with angular momentum limited by self--gravity. These stably co-- or counter--align with the black hole spin with almost equal frequency. Accretion from these discs very rapidly adjusts the hole's spin parameter to average values $\bar a \sim 0.1-0.3$ (the precise range depending slightly on the disc vertical viscosity coefficient $\alpha_2$) from any initial conditions, but with significant fluctuations ($\Delta a\sim \pm 0.2$) about these. We conclude (a) AGN black holes should on average spin moderately, with the mean value $\bar a$ decreasing slowly as the mass increases; (b) SMBH coalescences leave little long--term effect on $\bar a$; (c) SMBH coalescence products in general have modest recoil velocities, so that there is little likelihood of their being ejected from the host galaxy; (d) black holes can grow even from stellar masses to $\sim 5\times 10^9 \msun$ at high redshift $z\sim 6$; (e) jets produced in successive accretion episodes can have similar directions, but after several episodes the jet direction deviates significantly. Rare examples of massive holes with larger spin parameters could result from prograde coalescences with SMBH of similar mass, and are most likely to be found in giant ellipticals. Abstract

Identifying a zero-range exchange of vector mesons as the driving force for the s-wave scattering of pseudo-scalar mesons off the baryon ground states, a rich spectrum of hadronic nuclei is formed. We argue that chiral symmetry and large-$N_c$ considerations determine that part of the interaction which generates the spectrum. We suggest the existence of strongly bound crypto-exotic baryons, which contain a charm-anti-charm pair. Abstract

Identifying the zero-range exchange of vector mesons as the driving force for the s-wave scattering of pseudo-scalar mesons off the baryon ground states, the spectrum of ${3/2}^-$ molecules is computed. We predict a strongly bound 15-plet of $C=-1$ states. A narrow crypto-exotic octet of charm-zero states is foreseen. In the $C=+1$ sector a sextet of narrow resonances is formed due to the interaction of D mesons with the baryon decuplet. A strongly bound triplet of double-charm states is a consequence of coupled-channel dynamics driven by the D mesons., Comment: 38 pages

Abstract

We argue that chiral symmetry and large-$N_c$ considerations determine that part of the interaction which generates the spectrum. We suggest the existence of strongly bound crypto-exotic baryons, which contain a charm-anti-charm pair. Such states are narrow since they can decay only via OZI-violating processes. A narrow nucleon resonance is found at mass 3.52 GeV. It is a coupled-channel bound state of the $(\eta_c N), (\bar D \Sigma_c)$ system, which decays dominantly into the $(\eta' N)$ channel. Furthermore two isospin singlet hyperon states at mass 3.23 GeV and 3.58 GeV are observed as a consequence of coupled-channel interactions of the $(\bar D_s \Lambda_c), (\bar D \Xi_c)$ and $(\eta_c \Lambda),(\bar D \Xi_c')$ states. Most striking is the small width of about 1 MeV of the lower state. The upper state may be significantly broader due to a strong coupling to the $(\eta' \Lambda)$ state. The spectrum of crypto-exotic charm-zero states is completed with an isospin triplet state at 3.93 GeV and an isospin doublet state at 3.80 GeV. 28. Coupled-channel study of crypto-exotic baryons with charm

Abstract

Identifying the t-channel exchange of vector mesons as the driving force for the s-wave scattering of pseudo-scalar mesons off the baryon ground states, a surprisingly rich spectrum of molecules is formed. We argue that chiral symmetry and large- N_c considerations determine that part of the interaction which generates the spectrum. All channels that are required by the existence of (u,d,s,c) quarks are considered. A bound state with exotic quantum numbers is predicted at mass 2.78 GeV. It couples strongly to the (bar D_s N),(bar D Lambda),(bar D Sigma) channels. A further charm minus-one system is predicted at mass 2.84 GeV as a result of (bar D_s Lambda), (bar D Xi) interactions. 29. Open-charm meson resonances with negative strangeness

Abstract

We study heavy-light meson resonances with quantum numbers J^P=0^+ and J^P=1^+ in terms of the non-linear chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. Adjusting the free parameters that arise at subleading order to reproduce the mass of the D(2420) resonance as well as the new states established recently by the BABAR, CLEO and BELLE collaborations we obtain refined masses for the anti-triplet and sextet states. Bound states of antikaons at the D(1867) and D(2008) mesons are predicted at 2352 MeV (J^P=0^+) and 2416 MeV (J^P=1^+). In addition we anticipate a narrow scalar state of mass 2389 MeV with (I,S)=(1/2,0), Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Measures of the same phenomenon should produce the same results; this principle is fundamental because it allows for replication—the basis of science. Unfortunately, measures of a psychological construct in one language can often measure something a bit different in another language (i.e., low “scale equivalence”). Historically, the problem was thought to stem from insufficient knowledge of best-practice translation procedures. Yet solutions based on this diagnosis and their widespread adoption have not resolved the issue. In this article, we suggest that an additional problem might be insufficient information about the measure being translated. If so, low scale equivalence is a problem that translators and cross-cultural psychologists cannot solve on their own. We explore the possibility that measure-specific translation guides be created by original scale builders for the most widely used measures of important psychological constructs. We describe why such guides are needed, when they are needed, what they might look like, their feasibility, and next steps, providing a complete example guide and test case in a supplement concerning the Primals Inventory. In this article, we seek to spark discussion on translation practices happening behind the scenes and how greater transparency can improve scale equivalence, in the spirit of open science.
