We incorporate Se into the 3D halide perovskite framework using the zwitterionic ligand: SeCYS (+NH3(CH2)2Se−), which occupies both the X− and A+ sites in the prototypical ABX3 perovskite. The new organoselenide‐halide perovskites: (SeCYS)PbX2 (X = Cl, Br) expand upon the recently discovered organosulfide‐halide perovskites. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis reveal the average structures of the organoselenide‐halide perovskites, whereas the local lead coordination environments and their distributions were probed through solid‐state 77Se and 207Pb NMR, complemented by theoretical simulations. Density functional theory calculations illustrate that the band structures of (SeCYS)PbX2 largely resemble those of their S analogs, with similar band dispersion patterns, yet with a considerable bandgap decrease. Optical absorbance measurements indeed show bandgaps of 2.07 and 1.86 eV for (SeCYS)PbX2 with X = Cl and Br, respectively. We further demonstrate routes to alloying the halides (Cl, Br) and chalcogenides (S, Se) continuously tuning the bandgap from 1.86 to 2.31 eV—straddling the ideal range for tandem solar cells or visible‐light photocatalysis. The comprehensive description of the average and local structures, and how they can fine‐tune the bandgap and potential trap states, respectively, establishes the foundation for understanding this new perovskite family, which combines solid‐state and organo‐main‐group chemistry.

Copper oxides are promising photocathode materials for solar hydrogen production due to their narrow optical band gap energy allowing broad visible light absorption. However, they suffer from severe photocorrosion upon illumination, mainly due to copper reduction. Nanostructuring has been proven to enhance the photoresponse of CuO photocathodes; however, there is a lack of precise structural control on the nanoscale upon sol-gel synthesis and calcination for achieving optically transparent CuO thin film photoabsorbers. In this study, nanoporous and nanocrystalline CuO networks were prepared by a soft-templating and dip-coating method utilizing poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (Pluronic® F-127) as a structure-directing agent, resulting for the first-time in uniformly structured, crack-free, and optically transparent CuO thin films. The photoelectrochemical properties of the nanoporous CuO frameworks were investigated as a function of the calcination temperature and film thickness, revealing important information about the photocurrent, photostability, and photovoltage. Based on surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPV), the films are p-type and generate up to 60 mV photovoltage at 2.0 eV (0.050 mW cm-2) irradiation for the film annealed at 750 °C. For these high annealing temperatures, the nanocrystalline domains in the thin film structure are more developed, resulting in improved electronic quality. In aqueous electrolytes with or without methyl viologen (as a fast electron acceptor), CuO films show cathodic photocurrents of up to -2.4 mA cm-2 at 0.32 V vs. RHE (air mass (AM) 1.5). However, the photocurrents were found to be entirely due to photocorrosion of the films and decay to near zero over the course of 20 min under AM 1.5 illumination. These fundamental results on the structural and morphological development upon calcination provide a direction and show the necessity for further (surface) treatment of sol-gel derived CuO photocathodes for photoelectrochemical applications. The study demonstrates how to control the size of nanopores starting from mesopore formation at 400 °C to the evolution of macroporous frameworks at 750 °C.

The Genotype List (GL) String grammar for reporting HLA and Killer-cell Immunoglobulin-like Receptor (KIR) genotypes in a text string was described in 2013. Since this initial description, GL Strings have been used to describe HLA and KIR genotypes for more than 40 million subjects, allowing these data to be recorded, stored and transmitted in an easily parsed, text-based format. After a decade of working with HLA and KIR data in GL String format, with advances in HLA and KIR genotyping technologies that have fostered the generation of full-gene sequence data, the need for an extension of the GL String system has become clear. Here, we introduce the new GL String delimiter ?, which addresses the need to describe ambiguity in assigning a gene sequence to gene paralogs. GL Strings that do not include a ? delimiter continue to be interpreted as originally described. This extension represents version 1.1 of the GL String grammar.

Context: Following the social cognitive career theory of Lent, Brown, and Hackett (1994), the current study examines the effect of role models' professions and practical internship experiences on the choice of professional environment independent of professional interests. Embedded in the Swiss context with its strong vocational training system, the paper outlines to what extent the desired professional environment is realized in the chosen apprenticeship two years later and how this realization can be predicted. The theoretical model proposes that students form direct professional experiences during their first internship(s). If those experiences are positive, students choose an apprenticeship in the same professional environment. Students have indirect (vicarious) professional experiences through their role models. If those experiences are positive, students choose an apprenticeship in the role model's professional environment. The study examined whether, independent of professional interests, direct experiences in internships and indirect experiences through role models' professions predict the realization of a desired professional environment in an apprenticeship. Method: The longitudinal sample consists of N = 348 seventh- and ninth-grade students from four German-speaking Swiss cantons. Professional interests and environments were measured using standardized questionnaires. The professional environments of the desired professions, the chosen apprenticeships, the role model's professions, and the internship's professions were coded using Holland's (1997) interest types: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional (RIASEC). Results: In 53% of the cases, students chose an apprenticeship in the professional environment they desired. In 53% of the cases, the chosen professional environment corresponded with the professional environment of the student's two most important role models. In 39% of the cases, those role models were their parents. By means of logistic regression analyses, we can show that role models' professional environments and the professional environment of the first internship influenced the realization of the desired professional environment at the end of lower secondary school, independent of the effect of the individuals' interests. Conclusions: Results show that direct professional experiences in internships and indirect experiences of role models influence the realization of the desired professional environment, independent of professional interests. In a contextual approach, career counselling should include the role model's profession and how it corresponds with the client's interests and professional desires. Moreover, role models, especially parents, have a responsibility to reflect on how their goals influence students' career choice processes.

Many educational systems are characterized by segregation between a general and vocational educational track. When adolescents must decide on their postcompulsory education at the end of lower secondary school, the different programs are typically embedded in one of these two main tracks. Prior career choice theories postulate that vocational interests, as structured by the six-dimensional RIASEC model of Holland (1997), play a crucial role in educational and vocational transition processes. However, regarding the question of general versus vocational education, previous studies have mainly focused on the effects of social background. Therefore, this paper examines the impact of vocational interests on the choice of Baccalaureate School (BAC, general track), Vocational Education and Training (VET, vocational track) or the Federal Vocational Baccalaureate (FVB), a hybrid qualification that links elements of both tracks. The sample consists of N = 609 students at the end of lower secondary school in Switzerland. The results of multinomial logistic regression analyses show that all six dimensions of Holland's interest model are significant predictors for the three postcompulsory tracks, even when controlling for school variables (e.g., grades) and variables of social background. While the "realistic" and "social" dimensions are positively interrelated with the choice of VET, the "artistic," "investigative" and "enterprising" dimensions predict the choice of BAC. The "conventional" dimension is the only one positively linked to the choice of FVB. The results are discussed with special attention to segregation between more practical and more theoretical types of interests.

The dual factual and ethical dimension of learning in geography calls for consideration of how pupils in schools handle this complexity and how teachers might promote the development of ethical decision-making skills in the geography classroom. Proceeding from, and taking a new theoretical approach to, intuitive ethics, this article demonstrates the particular utility of the "trading game" as a learning setting for promoting ethical decision-making in the geography classroom. The researcher analysed the group discussions that took place subsequently to the use of the game via the documentary method, and, in line with reconstructive qualitative research practices, developed a typology that illuminated the decision-making logics driving pupils' gameplay and their engagement with the dual complexity of factual and ethical learning in geography lessons. The findings point to implications for didactic and methodological practice with regard to the type-specific promotion and development of ethical decision-making in the geography classroom.

The efficiency of photocatalytic systems is strongly depending on the charge carrier transfer from the excited semiconductor to co-catalyst particles attached on its surface. In this study, we investigated the influence of photo-induced charge transfer in photoplatinized TiO2 P25 photocatalysts by diffuse reflectance FTIR spectroscopy of CO molecules adsorbed on the Pt co-catalyst under well-defined gas phase conditions. The goals of the KIR component of the 17th International HLA and Immunogenetics Workshop (IHIW) were to encourage and educate researchers to begin analyzing KIR at allelic resolution, and to survey the nature and extent of KIR allelic diversity across human populations. To represent worldwide diversity, we analyzed 1269 individuals from ten populations, focusing on the most polymorphic KIR genes, which express receptors having three immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domains (KIR3DL1/S1, KIR3DL2 and KIR3DL3). We identified 13 novel alleles of KIR3DL1/S1, 13 of KIR3DL2 and 18 of KIR3DL3. Previously identified alleles, corresponding to 33 alleles of KIR3DL1/S1, 38 of KIR3DL2, and 43 of KIR3DL3, represented over 90% of the observed allele frequencies for these genes. In total we observed 37 KIR3DL1/S1 allotypes, 40 for KIR3DL2 and 44 for KIR3DL3. As KIR allotype diversity can affect NK cell function, this demonstrates potential for high functional diversity worldwide. Allelic variation further diversifies KIR haplotypes. We determined KIR3DL3 ∼ KIR3DL1/S1 ∼ KIR3DL2 haplotypes from five of the studied populations, and observed multiple population-specific haplotypes in each. This included 234 distinct haplotypes in European Americans, 191 in Ugandans, 35 in Papuans, 95 in Egyptians and 86 in Spanish populations. For another 35 populations, encompassing 642,105 individuals we focused on KIR3DL2 and identified another 375 novel alleles, with approximately half of them observed in more than one individual. The KIR allelic level data gathered from this project represents the most comprehensive summary of global KIR allelic diversity to date, and continued analysis will improve understanding of KIR allelic polymorphism in global populations. Further, the wealth of new data gathered in the course of this workshop component highlights the value of collaborative, community-based efforts in immunogenetics research, exemplified by the IHIW.

The integration of high-κ dielectrics on MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) is essential for the realization of MoS2 in ultrascaled nanoelectronic devices and circuits. Most studies covering this topic are based on exfoliated MoS2 flakes or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown MoS2 films, whereas other techniques, such as atomic layer deposition (ALD), are also gaining attention for the growth of MoS2 in recent years. In this work, we grow large-area MoS2 by means of plasma-enhanced (PE-)-ALD and evaluate the influence of high-κ dielectrics on the properties of ALD-based MoS2 FETs through electrical characterization combined with surface-chemical and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM) analyses. We grow HfOx, AlOx, or both by means of PE-ALD or thermal ALD on our fabricated devices and show that, in addition to the dielectric constant, three other major parameters related to the processing of the dielectrics can simultaneously affect the MoS2 FET electrical characteristics and govern its doping. These parameters are the stoichiometry of the dielectric, its carbon impurity content, and the degree to which the MoS2 surface oxidizes upon the dielectric growth. When grown at 100 °C, our HfOx films are oxygen-vacant whereas our AlOx films are oxygen-rich. In addition, carbon impurities are incorporated into the dielectrics at low deposition temperatures, being one of the likely causes of the MoS2 FET overall n-type performance in all of the studied cases. Our investigations also reveal that PE-ALD of HfOx or AlOx oxidizes the MoS2 surface, whereas thermal ALD AlOx leaves MoS2 almost intact. In this respect, if thermal ALD AlOx of proper thickness is grown between MoS2 and HfOx, it can reduce the degree to which the MoS2 surface oxidizes by HfOx and meanwhile improve the total dielectric constant, altogether leading to the most optimal electrical performance in ALD-based MoS2 FETs. Sustainable alternatives for the energy intensive synthesis of H2O2 are necessary. Molecular cobalt catalysts show potential but are typically restricted by undesired bimolecular pathways leading to the breakdown of both H2O2 and the catalyst. The confinement of cobalt porphyrins in the PCN‐224 metal‐organic framework leads to an enhanced selectivity towards H2O2 and stability of the catalyst. Consequently, oxygen can now be selectively reduced to hydrogen peroxide with a stable conversion for at least 5 h, illustrating the potential of catalysts confined in MOFs to increase the selectivity and stability of electrocatalytic conversions.
