This biennial Review summarizes much of Particle Physics. Using data from previous editions, plus 1726 new measurements from 512 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We also summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as Higgs bosons, heavy neutrinos, and supersymmetric particles. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as the Standard Model, particle detectors, probability, and statistics. Among the 119 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised including those on neutrino mixing, CP violation in K, D, and B mesons, Vcb, the new exotic Θ(1540) particle, extra-dimensions, grand unified theories, cosmic background radiation, dark matter, cosmological parameters, and big bang cosmology. We have developed a new model system for studying spindle elongation in vitro using the pennate, marine diatom Cylindrotheca fusiformis. C. fusiformis can be grown in bulk to high densities while in log phase growth and synchronized by a simple light/dark regime. Isolated spindles can be attained in quantities sufficient for biochemical analysis and spindle tubulin is approximately 5% of the total protein present. The spindle isolation procedure results in a 10-fold enrichment of diatom tubulin and a calculated 40-fold increase in spindle protein. Isolated spindles or spindles in permeabilized cells can elongate in vitro by the same mechanism and with the same pharmacological sensitivities as described for other anaphase B models (Cande and McDonald, 1986; Masuda et al., 1990). Using this model, in vitro spindle elongation rate profiles were developed for a battery of nucleotide triphosphates and ATP analogs. The relative rates of spindle elongation produced by various nucleotide triphosphates parallel relative rates seen for kinesin-based motility in microtubule gliding assays. Likewise ATP analogs that allow discrimination between myosin-, dynein-, and kinesin-mediated motility produce relative spindle elongation rates characteristic of kinesin motility. Also, isolated spindle fractions are enriched for a kinesin related protein as identified by a peptide antibody against a conserved region of the kinesin superfamily. These data suggest that kinesin-like motility contributes to spindle elongation during anaphase B of mitosis.

Background: Most extra-articular metacarpal fractures can be managed nonoperatively. While the conventional wisdom is that the metacarpophalangeal joint should be immobilized in a position of flexion, alternative methods for cast immobilization have been described. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate three methods of closed treatment; specifically, we investigated whether the position of immobilization of the metacarpophalangeal joint or the absence of a range of motion of the interphalangeal joints affected the short-term outcome or fracture alignment.Methods: Between November 2000 and April 2004, extra-articular metacarpal fractures were immobilized for five weeks in one of three ways: with the metacarpophalangeal joints in flexion and full interphalangeal joint motion permitted (Group 1); with the metacarpophalangeal joints in extension and full interphalangeal joint motion permitted (Group 2); and with the metacarpophalangeal joints in flexion, the interphalangeal joints in extension, and no interphalangeal joint motion permitted (Group 3). Radiographs and the range of motion were evaluated at five weeks after application of the cast, and the range of motion and grip strength were assessed at nine weeks.Results: Two hundred and sixty-three patients met the inclusion criteria. At five weeks, there was no difference among the treatment methods with regard to the range of motion or the maintenance of fracture reduction. At nine weeks, there was no significant difference with regard to the range of motion or grip strength.Conclusions: When immobilization was discontinued by five weeks, the position of the metacarpophalangeal joints and the absence or presence of interphalangeal joint motion during the immobilization had little effect on motion, grip strength, or fracture alignment. This finding contradicts the conventional teaching that the metacarpophalangeal joint must be immobilized in flexion to prevent long-term loss of joint extension. Osmotic stresses during cryoprotectant loading induce changes in cellular volume, leading to membrane damage or even cell death. Appropriate model-guided mitigation of these osmotic gradients during cryoprotectant loading is currently lacking, but would be highly beneficial in reducing viability loss during the loading process. To address this need, we reformulate the two-parameter formalism described by Jacobs and Stewart for cryoprotectant loading under the constraint of constant cell volume. We then derive simple, concise, analytic solutions to these equations, showing the transient extracellular permeating and nonpermeating cryoprotectant concentrations required to load a cell at constant volume, thus eliminating osmotic stresses during cryoprotectant loading. Additionally, we show analytic approximations of both ramp (linear) as well as step-wise loading and how one can use the hydraulic conductivity L p , membrane permeability P s , cell volume V o , and osmotically inactive fraction to derive cryoprotectant loading protocols that minimize osmotic stress. We also present timescales for water and cryoprotectant transport which can be used to estimate loading times as well as L p and P s . We discuss how previous optimized loading strategies are inherently sensitive to parameter uncertainties and biological variability, increasing the likelihood of exceeding critical osmotic limits. By contrast, the proposed protocol provides a larger buffer against deviations, offering a safer and more robust solution to CPA loading. We propose a new data representation method based on Quantum Cognition Machine Learning and apply it to manifold learning, specifically to the estimation of intrinsic dimension of data sets. The idea is to learn a representation of each data point as a quantum state, encoding both local properties of the point as well as its relation with the entire data. Inspired by ideas from quantum geometry, we then construct from the quantum states a point cloud equipped with a quantum metric. The metric exhibits a spectral gap whose location corresponds to the intrinsic dimension of the data. The proposed estimator is based on the detection of this spectral gap. When tested on synthetic manifold benchmarks, our estimates are shown to be robust with respect to the introduction of point-wise Gaussian noise. This is in contrast to current state-of-the-art estimators, which tend to attribute artificial "shadow dimensions" to noise artifacts, leading to overestimates. This is a significant advantage when dealing with real data sets, which are inevitably affected by unknown levels of noise. We show the applicability and robustness of our method on real data, by testing it on the ISOMAP face database, MNIST, and the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Dataset., Competing Interests: Declarations. Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) may enable high particle collection efficiency with minimal pressure drop in HVAC systems. However, studies of pathogen collection and inactivation in ESPs at medium to higher flow rates are limited. Here, a single-stage, wire-plate ESP operated at flow rates of 51 and 85 m 3 h -1 was used to study the removal of virus-laden aerosol particles for three different airborne viruses: (1) bovine coronavirus (BCoV), (2) influenza A virus (IAV), and (3) porcine reproductive and respiratory virus (PRRSV). Size-resolved measurements of collection efficiency were obtained using Andersen cascade impactors (ACI) sampling upstream and downstream of the ESP. All measurements were analyzed based on three distinctive but complementary methods: (1) fluorimetry to assess physical collection, (2) RT-qPCR to assess viral RNA concentrations and (3) virus titration to assess virus viability. In general, log reductions by virus titration were highest followed by those from RT-qPCR, and last fluorimetry, suggesting that a portion of virus may be potentially inactivated in flight in the ESP. An effective migration (deposition) velocity ranging from 3.10 to 10.05 cm s -1 was also determined using the spatially resolved measurements of virus collection on the ESP plates.

Infection control measures to prevent viral and bacterial infection spread are critical to maintaining a healthy environment. Pathogens such as viruses and pyogenic bacteria can cause infectious complications. Viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 are known to spread through the aerosol route and on fomite surfaces, lasting for a prolonged time in the environment. Developing technologies to mitigate the spread of pathogens through airborne routes and on surfaces is critical, especially for patients at high risk for infectious complications. Multifunctional coatings with a broad capacity to bind pathogens that result in inactivation can disrupt infectious spread through aerosol and inanimate surface spread. This study uses C-POLAR, a proprietary cationic, polyamine, organic polymer with a charged, dielectric property coated onto air filtration material and textiles. Using both SARS-CoV-2 live viral particles and bovine coronavirus models, C-POLAR-treated material shows a dramatic 2-log reduction in circulating viral inoculum. This reduction is consistent in a static room model, indicating simple airflow through a static C-POLAR hanging can capture significant airborne particles. Finally, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are applied to C-POLAR textiles using a viability indicator to demonstrate eradication on fomite surfaces. These data suggest that a cationic polymer surface can capture and eradicate human pathogens, potentially interrupting the infectious spread for a more resilient environment., Importance: Infection control is critical for maintaining a healthy home, work, and hospital environment. We test a cationic polymer capable of capturing and eradicating viral and bacterial pathogens by applying the polymer to the air filtration material and textiles. Coagulational growth in an aerosol is a multistep process; first particles collide, and then they coalesce with one another. Coalescence kinetics have been investigated in numerous prior studies, largely through atomistic simulations of nanoclusters (102-104 atoms). However, with a few exceptions, they have either assumed the process is completely isothermal or is a constant energy process. During coalescence, there is the formation of new bonds, decreasing potential energy, and correspondingly increasing internal kinetic (thermal) energy. Internal kinetic energy evolution is dependent not only on coalescence kinetics but also on heat transfer to the surrounding gas. Here, we develop and test a model of internal kinetic energy evolution in collisionally formed nanoclusters in the presence of a background gas. We find that internal kinetic energy dynamics hinge upon a power law relationship describing latent-to-sensible heat release as well as a modified thermal accommodation coefficient. The model is tested against atomistic models of 1.5-3.0 nm embedded-atom gold nanocluster sintering in argon and helium environments. The model results are in excellent agreement with the simulation results for all tested conditions. Results show that nanocluster effective temperatures can increase by hundreds of Kelvin due to coalescence, but that the rise and re-equilibration of the internal kinetic energy is strongly dependent on the background gas environment. Interestingly, internal kinetic energy change kinetics are also found to be distinct from surface area change kinetics, suggesting that modeling coalescence heat release solely due to surface area change is inaccurate., (© 2024 Author(s). Discriminating between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for applications including disease diagnosis and environmental monitoring, is often complicated by the presence of interfering compounds such as oxygen. Graphene sensors are effective at detecting VOCs; however, they are also known to be highly sensitive to oxygen. Therefore, the combined effects of each of these gases on graphene sensors must be understood. In this work, we use graphene variable capacitor (varactor) sensors to examine the cross-selectivity of oxygen at 3 concentrations and 3 VOCs (ethanol, methanol, and methyl ethyl ketone) at 5 concentrations each. The sensor responses exhibit distinct shapes dependent on the relative concentrations in mixtures of oxygen and VOCs. Because the entire response shape is therefore informative for distinguishing between each gas mixture, a classification algorithm that utilizes entire sequences of data is needed. Accordingly, a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is used to classify the mixtures and VOC concentrations. The model achieves 100% accurate classification of the VOC type, even in the presence of varying levels of oxygen. When the VOC type and VOC concentration are classified, we show that the sensors can provide VOC concentration resolution within approximately 200 ppm. Throughout this work, we also demonstrate that an effective gas mixture classification can be achieved, even while the sensors exhibit varied drift patterns typical of graphene sensors. This is made possible due to the data analysis and machine learning methods employed.

We propose a method for determining the time and, therefore, temperature-dependent relative nucleation and growth rates during crystallization. We do so by linking the partial differential equation governing the time dynamics of the crystal size distribution to kinetic (Avrami) parameters describing heat release. This approach is tested in silico by nucleating and growing diffusion limited aggregates with time-varying morphology and growth rates unhindered by impingement. The associated heat release is analyzed, showing that nucleation and growth rates could be extracted with high fidelity.

Transmission of infectious agents via aerosols is an ever-present concern in animal agriculture production settings, as the aerosol route to disease transmission can lead to difficult-to-control and costly diseases, such as porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus and influenza A virus. It is increasingly necessary to implement control technologies to mitigate aerosol-based disease transmission. Here, we review currently utilized and prospective future aerosol control technologies to collect and potentially inactivate pathogens in aerosols, with an emphasis on technologies that can be incorporated into mechanically driven (forced air) ventilation systems to prevent aerosol-based disease spread from facility to facility. Broadly, we find that control technologies can be grouped into three categories: (1) currently implemented technologies; (2) scaled technologies used in industrial and medical settings; and (3) emerging technologies. Category (1) solely consists of fibrous filter media, which have been demonstrated to reduce the spread of PRRSV between swine production facilities. We review the mechanisms by which filters function and are rated (minimum efficiency reporting values). Category (2) consists of electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), used industrially to collect aerosol particles in higher flow rate systems, and ultraviolet C (UV-C) systems, used in medical settings to inactivate pathogens. Finally, category (3) consists of a variety of technologies, including ionization-based systems, microwaves, and those generating reactive oxygen species, often with the goal of pathogen inactivation in aerosols. As such technologies are typically first tested through varied means at the laboratory scale, we additionally review control technology testing techniques at various stages of development, from laboratory studies to field demonstration, and in doing so, suggest uniform testing and report standards are needed. Testing standards should consider the cost-benefit of implementing the technologies applicable to the livestock species of interest. The advancement of hybrid mass spectrometric tools as an indirect probe of molecular structure and dynamics relies heavily upon a clear understanding between gas-phase ion reactivity and ion structural characteristics. This work provides new insights into gas-phase ion-neutral reactions of the model peptides (i.e., angiotensin II and bradykinin) on a per-residue basis by integrating hydrogen/deuterium exchange, ion mobility, tandem mass spectrometry, selective vapor binding, and molecular dynamics simulations. By comparing fragmentation patterns with simulated probabilities of vapor uptake, a clear link between gas-phase hydrogen/deuterium exchange and the probabilities of localized vapor association is established. The observed molecular dynamics trends related to the sites and duration of vapor binding track closely with experimental observation. Additionally, the influence of additional charges and structural characteristics on exchange kinetics and ion-neutral cluster formation is examined. These data provide a foundation for the analysis of solvation dynamics of larger, native-like conformations of proteins in the gas phase.

Toward greater separation techniques for ions, a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) has been coupled with field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) to take advantage of two mobility-related but different methods of separation. The filtering effect of the DMA allows ions to be selected individually based on low-field mobility and studied in FAIMS at variable electric field, yielding mobility separations in two dimensions. Because spectra fully describe ion mobility at variable field strength, results are then compared with a two-temperature theory-predicted mobility up to the fourth-order approximation. The comparison yields excellent results up to at least 100 Td, beyond which the theory deviates from experiments. This is attributed to two effects, the enlargement of the structure due to ion heating and the inelasticity of the collisions with the nitrogen bath gas. The corrected mobility can then be used to predict the dispersion plot through a newly developed implicit equation that circumvents the possible issues related to the more elaborate Buryakov equation. Our results simultaneously show that the DMA-FAIMS coupling yields complete information on ion mobility versus the field-strength to gas-density ratio and works toward predicting such spectra from ion structures and gas properties.

Background: Diagnosis of de Quervain's tenosynovitis is made clinically. Finkelstein's and Eichoff's tests are commonly utilized examination maneuvers. Their specificity has been questioned due to a propensity to provoke pain in asymptomatic patients. Using the principle of synergism, the novel radial synergy test takes advantage of isometric contraction of the first dorsal compartment with resisted abduction of the small finger., Methods: Electromyography was performed on 3 authors and the first dorsal compartment sampled during the maneuver. Sensitivity evaluation was performed via retrospective chart review for patients diagnosed with de Quervain's from 2013 to 2018. Inclusion criteria were documented radial synergy test, Eichoff's test, and ≥90% pain relief after lidocaine/corticosteroid injection. We enrolled 222 patients with 254 affected extremities. Specificity evaluation was performed via a prospective cohort of volunteers undergoing radial synergy and Eichoff's tests. Inclusion criterion was lack of preexisting wrist pain. Score > 0 on Visual Analog Scale was considered positive. We enrolled 48 volunteers with 93 tested extremities., Results: Electromyography revealed positive recruitment of the first dorsal compartment. Sensitivity of the radial synergy test was inferior to Eichoff's test (97% vs 91%, relative risk [RR] = 0.93 [95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.89-0.97], P < .01). Specificity of the radial synergy test was superior to Eichoff's test (99% vs 74%, RR = 1.33 [95% CI = 1.18-1.51], P < .001)., Conclusions: We describe and evaluate the radial synergy test, a novel examination maneuver to aid the diagnosis of de Quervain's. This serves as an adjunct for future diagnostic evaluations with its high specificity., Level of Evidence: Level II, diagnostic study.

Coagulation is a key factor governing the size distribution of nanoclusters during the high temperature synthesis of metal oxide nanomaterials. Population balance models are strongly influenced by the coagulation rate coefficient utilized. Although simplified coagulation models are often invoked, the coagulation process, particularly for nanoscale particles, is complex, affected by the coagulating nanocluster sizes, the surrounding temperature, and potential interactions. Toward developing improved models of nanocluster and nanoparticle growth, we have developed a neural network (NN) model to describe titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanocluster coagulation rate coefficients, trained with molecular dynamics (MD) trajectory calculations. Specifically, we first calculated TiO 2 nanocluster coagulation probabilities via MD trajectory calculations varying the nanocluster diameters from 0.6 to 3.0 nm, initial relative velocity from 20 to 700 m s -1 , and impact parameter from 0.0 to 8.0 nm. Calculations consider dipole-dipole interactions, dispersion interactions, and short-range repulsive interactions. We trained a NN model to predict whether a given set of nanocluster diameters, impact parameter, and initial velocity would lead to the outcome of coagulation. The accuracy between the predicted outcomes from the NN model and the MD trajectory calculation results is >95%. We subsequently utilized both the NN model and MD trajectory calculations to examine coagulation rate coefficients at 300 and 1000 K. The NN model predictions are largely within the range 0.65-1.54 of MD predictions, and importantly NN predictions capture the local minimum coagulation rate coefficients observed in MD trajectory calculations. The NN model can be directly implemented in population balances of TiO 2 formation.

The rates and mechanisms of chemical reactions that occur at a phase boundary often differ considerably from chemical behavior in bulk solution, but remain difficult to quantify. Ion-neutral interactions are one such class of chemical reactions whose behavior during the nascent stages of solvation differs from bulk solution while occupying critical roles in aerosol formation, atmospheric chemistry, and gas-phase ion separations. Through a gas-phase ion separation technique utilizing a counter-current flow of deuterated vapor, we quantify the degree of hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX) and ion-neutral clustering on a series of model chemical systems ( i.e. amino acids). By simultaneously quantifying the degree of vapor association and HDX, the effects of cluster formation on reaction kinetics are realized. These results imply that cluster formation cannot be ignored when modeling complex nucleation processes and biopolymer structural dynamics.

Rapid detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is growing in importance in many sectors. Noninvasive medical diagnoses may be based upon particular combinations of VOCs in human breath; detecting VOCs emitted from environmental hazards such as fungal growth could prevent illness; and waste could be reduced through monitoring of gases produced during food storage. Electronic noses have been applied to such problems, however, a common limitation is in improving selectivity. Graphene is an adaptable material that can be functionalized with many chemical receptors. Here, we use this versatility to demonstrate selective and rapid detection of multiple VOCs at varying concentrations with graphene-based variable capacitor (varactor) arrays. Each array contains 108 sensors functionalized with 36 chemical receptors for cross-selectivity. Multiplexer data acquisition from 108 sensors is accomplished in tens of seconds. While this rapid measurement reduces the signal magnitude, classification using supervised machine learning (Bootstrap Aggregated Random Forest) shows excellent results of 98% accuracy between 5 analytes (ethanol, hexanal, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, and octane) at 4 concentrations each. With the addition of 1-octene, an analyte highly similar in structure to octane, an accuracy of 89% is achieved. These results demonstrate the important role of the choice of analysis method, particularly in the presence of noisy data. This is an important step toward fully utilizing graphene-based sensor arrays for rapid gas sensing applications from environmental monitoring to disease detection in human breath.

Silica nanomaterials have been studied based on their potential applications in a variety of fields, including biomedicine and agriculture. A number of different molecules have been condensed onto silica nanoparticles' surfaces to present the surface chemistry needed for a given application. Among those molecules, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APS) is one of the most commonly applied silanes used for nanoparticle surface functionalization to achieve charge reversal as well as to enable cargo loading. However, the colloidal stability of APS-functionalized silica nanoparticles has not been thoroughly studied, which can be problematic when the high reactivity of amine groups is considered. In this study, four different types of silica nanoparticles with varied location of added APS have been prepared via a reverse micro emulsion process, and their colloidal stability and dissolution behavior have been investigated. Systematic characterization has been accomplished using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), silicomolybdic acid (SMA) spectrophotometric assay, nitrogen adsorption-desorption surface area measurement, and aerosol ion mobility-mass spectrometry to track the nanoparticles' physical and chemical changes during dissolution. We find that when APS is on the interior of the silica nanoparticle, it facilitates dissolution, but when APS is condensed both on the interior and exterior, only the exterior siloxane bonds experience catalytic hydrolysis, and the interior dissolution is dramatically suppressed. The observation and analyses that silica nanoparticles show different hydrolysis behaviors dependent on the location of the functional group will be important in future design of silica nanoparticles for specific biomedical and agricultural applications.

Measurement of the gas-phase ion mobility of proteins provides a means to quantitatively assess the relative sizes of charged proteins. However, protein ion mobility measurements are typically singular values. Here, we apply tandem mobility analysis to low charge state protein ions (+1 and +2 ions) introduced into the gas phase by nanodroplet nebulization. We first determine protein ion mobilities in dry air and subsequently examine shifts in mobilities brought about by the clustering of vapor molecules. Tandem mobility analysis yields mobility-vapor concentration curves for each protein ion, expanding the information obtained from mobility analysis. This experimental procedure and analysis is extended to bovine serum albumin, transferrin, immunoglobulin G, and apoferritin with water, 1-butanol, and nonane. All protein ions appear to adsorb vapor molecules, with mobility "diameter" shifts of up to 6-7% at conditions just below vapor saturation. We parametrize results using κ-Köhler theory, where the term κ quantifies the extent of uptake beyond Köhler model expectations. For 1-butanol and nonane, κ decreases with increasing protein ion size, while it increases with increasing protein ion size for water. For the systems probed, the extent of mobility shift for the organic vapors is unaffected by the nebulized solution pH, while shifts with water are sensitive to pH.

In indoor environments with limited ventilation, recirculating portable air filtration (PAF) units may reduce COVID-19 infection risk via not only the direct aerosol route (i.e., inhalation) but also via an indirect aerosol route (i.e., contact with the surface where aerosol particles deposited). We systematically investigated the impact of PAF units in a mock classroom, as a supplement to background ventilation, on localized and whole-room surface deposition and particle concentration. Fluorescently tagged particles with a volumetric mean diameter near 2 μm were continuously introduced into the classroom environment via a breathing simulator with a prescribed inhalation-exhalation waveform. Deposition velocities were inferred on >50 horizontal and vertical surfaces throughout the classroom, while aerosol concentrations were spatially monitored via optical particle spectrometry. Results revealed a particle decay rate consistent with expectations based upon the reported clean air delivery rates of the PAF units. Additionally, the PAF units reduced peak concentrations by a factor of around 2.5 compared to the highest concentrations observed and led to a statistically significant reduction in deposition velocities for horizontal surfaces >2.5 m from the aerosol source. Older individuals with chronic health conditions are at highest risk of adverse clinical outcomes from COVID-19, but there is widespread belief that risk to younger, relatively lower-risk individuals is negligible. We assessed the rate and predictors of life-threatening complications among relatively lower-risk adults hospitalized with COVID-19. Of 3766 adults hospitalized with COVID-19 to three hospitals in New York City from March to May 2020, 963 were relatively lower-risk based on absence of preexisting health conditions. Multivariable logistic regression models examined in-hospital development of life-threatening complications (major medical events, intubation, or death). Covariates included age, sex, race/ethnicity, hypertension, weight, insurance type, and area-level sociodemographic factors (poverty, crowdedness, and limited English proficiency). In individuals ≥55 years old (n = 522), 33.3% experienced a life-threatening complication, 17.4% were intubated, and 22.6% died. Among those <55 years (n = 441), 15.0% experienced a life-threatening complication, 11.1% were intubated, and 5.9% died. In multivariable analyses among those ≥55 years, age (OR 1.03 [95%CI 1.01-1.06]), male sex (OR 1.72 [95%CI 1.14-2.64]), being publicly insured (versus commercial insurance: Medicare, OR 2.02 [95%CI 1.22-3.38], Medicaid, OR 1.87 [95%CI 1.10-3.20]) and living in areas with relatively high limited English proficiency (highest versus lowest quartile: OR 3.50 [95%CI 1.74-7.13]) predicted life-threatening complications. In those <55 years, no sociodemographic factors significantly predicted life-threatening complications. A substantial proportion of relatively lower-risk patients hospitalized with COVID-19 experienced life-threatening complications and more than 1 in 20 died. Background: The BinaxNOW coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) Ag Card test (Abbott Diagnostics Scarborough, Inc.) is a lateral flow immunochromatographic point-of-care test for the qualitative detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleocapsid protein antigen. It provides results from nasal swabs in 15 minutes. Our purpose was to determine its sensitivity and specificity for a COVID-19 diagnosis., Methods: Eligible patients had symptoms of COVID-19 or suspected exposure. After consent, 2 nasal swabs were collected; 1 was tested using the Abbott RealTime SARS-CoV-2 (ie, the gold standard polymerase chain reaction test) and the second run on the BinaxNOW point of care platform by emergency department staff., Results: From July 20 to October 28, 2020, 767 patients were enrolled, of which 735 had evaluable samples. Their mean (SD) age was 46.8 (16.6) years, and 422 (57.4%) were women. A total of 623 (84.8%) patients had COVID-19 symptoms, most commonly shortness of breath ( n  = 404; 55.0%), cough ( n  = 314; 42.7%), and fever ( n  = 253; 34.4%). Although 460 (62.6%) had symptoms ≤7 days, the mean (SD) time since symptom onset was 8.1 (14.0) days. Positive tests occurred in 173 (23.5%) and 141 (19.2%) with the gold standard versus BinaxNOW test, respectively. Those with symptoms >2 weeks had a positive test rate roughly half of those with earlier presentations. In patients with symptoms ≤7 days, the sensitivity, specificity, and negative and positive predictive values for the BinaxNOW test were 84.6%, 98.5%, 94.9%, and 95.2%, respectively., Conclusions: The BinaxNOW point-of-care test has good sensitivity and excellent specificity for the detection of COVID-19. This paper describes the extension of the classic Avrami equation to nonisothermal systems with arbitrary temperature-time history and arbitrary initial distributions of transformed phase. We start by showing that through examination of phase change in Fourier space, we can decouple the nucleation rate, growth rate, and transformed fraction, leading to the derivation of a nonlinear differential equation relating these three properties. We then consider a population balance partial differential equation (PDE) on the phase size distribution and solve it analytically. Then, by relating this PDE solution to the transformed fraction of phase, we are able to derive initial conditions to the differential equation relating nucleation rate, growth rate, and transformed fraction.

Background: As researchers race to understand the nature of COVID-19 transmission, healthcare institutions must treat COVID-19 patients while also safeguarding the health of staff and other patients. One aspect of this process involves mitigating aerosol transmission of the SARS-CoV2 virus. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides general guidance on airborne contaminant removal, but directly measuring aerosol clearance in clinical rooms provides empirical evidence to guide clinical procedure., Aim: We present a risk-assessment approach to empirically measuring and certifying the aerosol clearance time (ACT) in operating and procedure rooms to improve hospital efficiency while also mitigating the risk of nosocomial infection., Methods: Rooms were clustered based on physical and procedural parameters. Sample rooms from each cluster were randomly selected and tested by challenging the room with aerosol and monitoring aerosolized particle concentration until 99.9% clearance was achieved. Data quality was analysed and aerosol clearance times for each cluster were determined., Findings: Of the 521 operating and procedure rooms considered, 449 (86%) were issued a decrease in clearance time relative to CDC guidance, 32 (6%) had their clearance times increased, and 40 (8%) remained at guidance. The average clearance time change of all rooms assessed was a net reduction of 27.8%., Conclusion: The process described here balances the need for high-quality, repeatable data with the burden of testing in a functioning clinical setting. Recirculating air purification technologies are employed as potential means of reducing exposure to aerosol particles and airborne viruses. Toward improved testing of recirculating air purification units, we developed and applied a medium-scale single-pass wind tunnel test to examine the size-dependent collection of particles and the collection and inactivation of viable bovine coronavirus (BCoV, a betacoronavirus), porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV, an alphacoronavirus), and influenza A virus (IAV), by a commercial air purification unit. The tested unit, the Molekule Air Mini, incorporates a MERV 16 filter as well as a photoelectrochemical oxidating layer. It was found to have a collection efficiency above 95.8% for all tested particle diameters and flow rates, with collection efficiencies above 99% for supermicrometer particles with the minimum collection efficiency for particles smaller than 100 nm. For all three tested viruses, the physical tracer-based log reduction was near 2.0 (99% removal). Conversely, the viable virus log reductions were found to be near 4.0 for IAV, 3.0 for BCoV, and 2.5 for PRCV, suggesting additional inactivation in a virus family- and genus-specific manner. Background: We conducted a secondary analysis of changes in the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ)-12 over 30 days in a randomized trial of self-care coaching versus structured usual care in patients with acute heart failure who were discharged from the emergency department., Methods: Patients in 15 emergency departments completed the KCCQ-12 at emergency department discharge and at 30 days. We compared change in KCCQ-12 scores between the intervention and usual care arms, adjusted for enrollment KCCQ-12 and demographic characteristics. We used linear regression to describe changes in KCCQ-12 summary scores and logistic regression to characterize clinically meaningful KCCQ-12 subdomain changes at 30 days., Results: There were 350 patients with both enrollment and 30-day KCCQ summary scores available; 166 allocated to usual care and 184 to the intervention arm. Median age was 64 years (interquartile range, 55-70), 37% were female participants, 63% were Black, median KCCQ-12 summary score at enrollment was 47 (interquartile range, 33-64). Self-care coaching resulted in significantly greater improvement in health status compared with structured usual care (5.4-point greater improvement, 95% CI, 1.12-9.68; P =0.01). Improvements in health status in the intervention arm were driven by improvements within the symptom frequency (adjusted odds ratio, 1.62 [95% CI, 1.01-2.59]) and quality of life (adjusted odds ratio, 2.39 [95% CI, 1.46-3.90]) subdomains., Conclusions: In this secondary analysis, patients with acute heart failure who received a tailored, self-care intervention after emergency department discharge had clinically significant improvements in health status at 30 days compared with structured usual care largely due to improvements within the symptom frequency and quality of life subdomains of the KCCQ-12. Objective: To quantify the efficacy of masking and "social distancing" on the transmission of airborne particles from a phantom aerosol source (simulating an infected individual) to a nearby target (simulating a healthy bystander) in a well-controlled setting., Methods: An aerosol was created using monodisperse polystyrene latex beads in place of infectious respiratory secretions. Detection was by aerodynamic particle spectrometry. Both reusable cloth masks and disposable paper masks were studied. Transmission was simulated indoors during a 3-minute interval to eliminate the effect of variable ventilation rate on aerosol exposure. The study commenced on September 16, 2020, and concluded on December 15, 2020., Results: Compared with a baseline of 1-foot separation with no masks employed, particle count was reduced by 84% at 3 feet of separation and 97% at 6 feet. A modest decrease in particle count was observed when only the receiver was masked. The most substantial exposure reduction occurred when the aerosol source was masked (or both parties were masked). When both the source and target were masked, particle count was reduced by more than 99.5% of baseline, regardless of separation distance or which type of mask was employed., Conclusion: These results support the principle of layered protection to mitigate transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, and other respiratory viruses and emphasize the importance of controlling the spread of aerosol at its source. The combination of masking and distancing reduced the exposure to exhaled particulates more than any individual measure. Control technologies to inactivate airborne viruses effectively are needed during the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and to guard against airborne transmitted diseases. We demonstrate that sealed UV-C flow reactors operating with fluences near 253 ± 1 nm of 13.9-49.6 mJ cm -2 efficiently inactivate coronaviruses in an aerosol. For measurements, porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV) was nebulized in a custom-built, 3.86 m wind tunnel housed in a biosafety level class II facility. The single pass log 10 reduction of active coronavirus was in excess of 2.2 at a flow rate of 2439 L min -1 (13.9 mJ cm -2 ) and in excess of 3.7 (99.98% removal efficiency) at 684 L min -1 (49.6 mJ cm -2 ). Because virus titers resulting from sampling downstream of the UV-C reactor were below the limit of detection, the true log reduction is likely even higher than measured. Comparison of virus titration results to reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR and measurement of fluorescein concentrations (doped into the nebulized aerosol) reveals that the reduction in viable PRCV is primarily due to UV-C based inactivation, as opposed to physical collection of virus. The results confirm that UV-C flow reactors can efficiently inactivate coronaviruses through incorporation into HVAC ducts or recirculating air purifiers.

Laser heating of gold nanospheres (GNS) is increasingly prevalent in biomedical applications due to tunable optical properties that determine heating efficiency. Although many geometric parameters (i.e. size, morphology) can affect optical properties of individual GNS and their heating, no specific studies of how GNS aggregation affects heating have been carried out. We posit here that aggregation, which can occur within some biological systems, will significantly impact the optical and therefore heating properties of GNS. To address this, we employed discrete dipole approximation (DDA) simulations, Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and laser calorimetry on GNS primary particles with diameters (5, 16, 30 nm) and their aggregates that contain 2 to 30 GNS particles. DDA shows that aggregation can reduce the extinction cross-section on a per particle basis by 17-28%. Experimental measurement by UV-Vis and laser calorimetry on aggregates also show up to a 25% reduction in extinction coefficient and significantly lower heating (~ 10%) compared to dispersed GNS. In addition, comparison of select aggregates shows even larger extinction cross section drops in sparse vs. dense aggregates. This work shows that GNS aggregation can change optical properties and reduce heating and provides a new framework for exploring this effect during laser heating of nanomaterial solutions.

Ion attachment and ion drag to dust particles near the edge of a nonthermal plasma sheath are of interest to better understand how particles become trapped in such sheath regions. While electron-particle collisions in plasmas and sheaths can often be described by orbital motion limited theory, quantification of ion transport about dust particles in collisional sheath regions requires a distinct modeling approach. In this work, the dimensionless ion attachment coefficients and dimensionless collection forces on negatively charged particles are calculated using ion trajectory models accounting for an external electric field in a collisional sheath, ion inertia, and finite ion mobility. By considering both ion inertia and finite ion mobility, results apply for ion transport from the fully collisional regime into a regime of intermediate collisionality. Ion collection forces are calculated in two related limits; first, the nondissipative limit, wherein the dimensionless collection force function coincides with the dimensionless attachment coefficient (anticipated in the collisionless regime), and second, a dissipative limit, wherein neutral gas collisions dissipate ion momentum, which strongly affects the resulting collection force (anticipated in the fully collisional regime). We show that ion motion about a charged particle can be parametrized by the ion Stokes number, which is the ratio of ion inertia to gas resistance to motion and dimensionless electric field strength (the external field strength normalized by the electric field at the particle surface). At intermediate Stokes numbers (10^{1}-10^{2}), ions adopt trajectories that are extremely sensitive to the initial ion-particle impact parameter. Plots of the resulting collision angle at fixed Stokes number and dimensionless field strength as a function of impact parameter contain multiple discontinuities. Nonetheless, we obtain smooth curves for the ion attachment rates and collection forces in both the nondissipative and fully dissipative limits. Increasing the ion Stokes number is found to significantly decrease the dimensionless ion attachment coefficients and ion collection forces in comparison to coefficients evaluated with expressions derived in the fully collisional limit. In all instances, including the dissipative limit, we find the ion collection force acts in the direction of ion migration. Neural network fits are utilized to parametrize the resulting attachment coefficients and ion collection forces, and we apply these fits to examine the charge levels on 1-μm radius particles in external fields in the 3×10^{2}-3×10^{3}Vm^{-1} range and pressures in the 5×10^{-1}-5×10^{1} Torr (66.7-6667 Pa) range. We find the charge level is strongly sensitive to both field strength and pressure in the plasma sheath, ranging from 6 × 10^{3} to 1.8 × 10^{4} over the conditions examined. Calculations are also used to demonstrate that the ion collection force can be sufficiently strong to trap particles not only close to the bottom electrode of a parallel-plate reactor, but also close to the top electrode, with a critical ion density required for trapping.

The charge reduction of multiply charged macromolecular ions via recombination with small ions in the gas phase is commonly employed to modulate the charge on macromolecules prior to mass spectrometric and mobility analyses. We employ a recently developed continuum-Molecular Dynamics (MD) calculation approach to determine the recombination rate coefficient of multiply charged (1 to 7 excess positive charged) polyethylene glycol ions (mass of 4600 Da) with smaller singly charged anions, modeled as NO 2 - ions. The continuum-MD approach accounts explicitly for the influence of the background gas on the recombination process, accounts explicitly for ion translational, vibrational, and rotational motion, and enables recombination rate coefficient calculation in nitrogen near atmospheric pressure, wherein neither low pressure nor high pressure recombination theories are strictly applicable. Continuum-MD simulations yield recombination rate coefficients near 3.9 × 10 -14 m 3 s -1 for singly charged ions, increasing to 3.0 × 10 -11 m 3 s -1 for the +7 ion. Pre-existing collision rate coefficient expressions for rigid ions are found to be within a factor of 2-5 of calculations for all charge states, but their use requires knowledge of an appropriate collision distance, which is not well-defined for flexible polymer ions. Continuum-MD-inferred rate coefficients are incorporated into a model of charge reduction, and the charge state distribution versus anion concentration determined with it is compared to charge reduction measurements made via atmospheric pressure differential mobility analysis. Good agreement is observed between simulations and experiments; although results are extremely sensitive to the recombination rate coefficients, experimental results are bound by models utilizing rates within a factor of 2 (0.5-2.0×) of the continuum-MD rates.

Rationale: Aerosol generation with modes of oxygen therapy such as high-flow nasal cannula and noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation is a concern for healthcare workers during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. The amount of aerosol generation from the respiratory tract with these various oxygen modalities is unknown. Objectives: To measure the size and number concentration of particles and droplets generated from the respiratory tract of humans exposed to various oxygen delivery modalities. Methods: Ten healthy participants with no active pulmonary disease were enrolled. Oxygen modalities tested included nonhumidified nasal cannula, face mask, heated and humidified high-flow nasal cannula, and noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation. Aerosol generation was measured with each oxygen mode while participants performed maneuvers of normal breathing, talking, deep breathing, and coughing. Testing was conducted in a negative-pressure room. Particles with a diameter between 0.37 and 20 μm were measured using an aerodynamic particle spectrometer. Measurements and Main Results: Median particle concentration ranged from 0.041 to 0.168 particles/cm 3 . Median diameter ranged from 1.01 to 1.53 μm. Cough significantly increased the number of particles measured. Measured aerosol concentration did not significantly increase with the use of either humidified high-flow nasal cannula or noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation. This was the case during normal breathing, talking, deep breathing, and coughing. Conclusions: Oxygen delivery modalities of humidified high-flow nasal cannula and noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation do not increase aerosol generation from the respiratory tract in healthy human participants with no active pulmonary disease measured in a negative-pressure room.

Background: To mitigate potential exposure of healthcare workers (HCWs) to SARS-CoV-2 via aerosol routes, we have developed a portable hood which not only creates a barrier between HCW and patient, but also utilizes negative pressure with filtration of aerosols by a high-efficiency particulate air filter., Material and Methods: The hood has iris-port openings for access to the patient, and an opening large enough for a patient's head and upper torso. The top of the hood is a high-efficiency particulate air filter connected to a blower to apply negative pressure. We determined the aerosol penetration from outside to inside in laboratory experiments., Results: The penetration of particles from within the hood to the breathing zones of HCWs outside the hood was near 10 -4 (0.01%) in the 200-400 nm size range, and near 10 -3 (0.1%) for smaller particles. Penetration values for particles in the 500 nm-5 μm range were below 10 -2 (1%). Fluorometric analysis of deposited fluorescein particles on the personal protective equipment of an HCW revealed that negative pressure reduces particle deposition both outside and inside the hood., Conclusions: We find that negative pressure hoods can be effective controls to mitigate aerosol exposure to HCWs, while simultaneously allowing access to patients., (Copyright © 2020 Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. Vapor assisted mobility shift measurements were made with atmospheric pressure drift-tube ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) to determine the thermodynamic properties of weakly bound ion-molecule clusters formed from protonated phenylalanine and neutral vapor molecules with hydroxyl functional groups. Relative binding energies and gas-phase association energies of amino acid ions clustered with small organic molecules have been established previously using high-pressure mass spectrometry. However, the issue of volatility largely prohibits the use of high-pressure mass spectrometry for the determination of gas-phase associations of amino acid ions clustered with neutral vapor molecules in many instances. In contrast, ion mobility measurements can be made at atmospheric pressure with volatile vapor additives near and above their boiling points, providing access to clustering equilibria not possible using high-vacuum techniques. In this study, we report the gas-phase association energies, enthalpies, and entropies for a protonated phenylalanine ion clustered with three neutral vapor molecules: 2-propanol, 1-butanol, and 2-pentanol based upon measurements at temperatures ranging from 120 to 180 °C. The gas-phase enthalpy and entropy changes ranged between -4 to -7 kcal/mol and -3 to 6 cal/(mol K), respectively. We found enthalpically favored ion-neutral cluster reactions for phenylalanine with entropic barriers for the formation of phenylalanine-1-butanol and phenylalanine-2-pentanol cluster ions, while phenylalanine-2-propanol cluster ion formation is both enthalpically and (weakly) entropically favorable. Under the measurement conditions examined, phenylalanine-vapor modifier cluster ion formation is clearly observed via shifts in the drift time for the three test vapor molecules. In comparison, negligible shifts in mobility are observed for protonated arginine exposed to the same vapor modifiers.

Background: The accuracy and speed by which acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is excluded are an important determinant of emergency department (ED) length of stay and resource utilization. While high-sensitivity troponin I (hsTnI) >99th percentile (upper reference level [URL]) represents a "rule-in" cutpoint, our purpose was to evaluate the ability of the Beckman Coulter hsTnI assay, using various level-of-quantification (LoQ) cutpoints, to rule out AMI within 3 hours of ED presentation in suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients., Methods: This multicenter evaluation enrolled adults with >5 minutes of ACS symptoms and an electrocardiogram obtained per standard care. Exclusions were ST-segment elevation or chronic hemodialysis. After informed consent was obtained, blood samples were collected in heparin at ED admission (baseline), ≥1 to 3, ≥3 to 6, and ≥6 to 9 hours postadmission. Samples were processed and stored at -20°C within 1 hour and were tested at three independent clinical laboratories on an immunoassay system (DxI 800, Beckman Coulter). Analytic cutpoints were the URL of 17.9 ng/L and two LoQ cutpoints, defined as the 10 and 20% coefficient of variation (5.6 and 2.3 ng/L, respectively). A criterion standard MI diagnosis was adjudicated by an independent endpoint committee, blinded to hsTnI, and using the universal definition of MI., Results: Of 1,049 patients meeting the entry criteria, and with baseline and 1- to 3-hour hsTnI results, 117 (11.2%) had an adjudicated final diagnosis of AMI. AMI patients were typically older, with more cardiovascular risk factors. Median (IQR) presentation time was 4 (1.6-16.0) hours after symptom onset, although AMI patients presented ~0.5 hour earlier than non-AMI. Enrollment and first blood draw occurred at a mean of ~1 hour after arrival. To evaluate the assay's rule-out performance, patients with any hsTnI > URL were considered high risk and were excluded. The remaining population (n = 829) was divided into four LoQ relative categories: both hsTnI < LoQ (Lo-Lo cohort); first hsTnI < LoQ and 2nd > LoQ (Lo-Hi cohort); first > LoQ and second < LoQ (Hi-Lo cohort); or both > LoQ (Hi-Hi cohort). In patients with any hsTnI result <20% CV LoQ (Groups 1-3), n = 231 (23.9% ruled out), AMI negative predictive value (NPV) was 100% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 98.9% to 100%). In patients with any hsTnI below the 10% LoQ, n = 611 (58% rule out), AMI NPV was 100% (95% CI = 99.5% to 100%). Of the Hi-Hi cohort (i.e., no hsTnI below the 10% LoQ, but both < URL), there were four AMI patients, NPV was 98.2% (95% CI = 95.4% to 99.3%), and sensitivity was 96.6., Conclusions: Patients presenting >3 hours after the onset of suspected ACS symptoms, with at least two Beckman Coulter Access hsTnI < URL and at least one of which is below either the 10 or the 20% LoQ, had a 100% NPV for AMI. Accurate calculation of the ion-ion recombination rate coefficient has been of long-standing interest as it controls the ion concentration in gas phase systems and in aerosols. We describe the development of a hybrid continuum-molecular dynamics (MD) approach to determine the ion-ion recombination rate coefficient. This approach is based on the limiting sphere method classically used for transition regime collision phenomena in aerosols. When ions are sufficiently far from one another, the ion-ion relative motion is described by diffusion equations, while within a critical distance, MD simulations are used to model ion-ion motion. MD simulations are parameterized using the Assisted Model Building with Energy Refinement force-field as well as by considering partial charges on atoms. Ion-neutral gas collisions are modeled in two mutually exclusive cubic domains composed of 10 3 gas atoms each, which remain centered on the recombining ions throughout calculations. Example calculations are reported for NH 4 + recombination with NO 2 - in He, across a pressure range from 10 kPa to 10 000 kPa. Excellent agreement is found in comparison with calculations to literature values for the 100 kPa recombination rate coefficient (1.0 × 10 -12 m 3 s -1 ) in He. We also recover the experimentally observed increase in the recombination rate coefficient with pressure at sub-atmospheric pressures, and the observed decrease in the recombination rate coefficient in the high pressure continuum limit. We additionally find that non-dimensionalized forms of rate coefficients are consistent with recently developed equations for the dimensionless charged particle-ion collision rate coefficient based on Langevin dynamics simulations.

Multidimensional techniques that combine fully or partially orthogonal characterization methods in a single setup often provide a more comprehensive description of analytes. When applied to nanoparticles, they have the potential to reveal particle properties not accessible to more conventional 1D techniques. Herein, we apply recently developed 2D characterization techniques to nanoparticles using atmospheric-pressure ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS), and we demonstrate the analytical capability of this approach using ultraporous mesostructured silica nanoparticles (UMNs). We show that IM-MS yields a 2D particle size-mass distribution function, which in turn can be used to calculate not only important 1D distributions, i.e. particle size distributions, but also nanoparticle structural property distributions not accessible by other methods, including size-dependent particle porosity and the specific pore volume distribution function. IM-MS measurement accuracy was confirmed by measurement of NIST-certified polystyrene latex particle standards. For UMNs, comparison of IM-MS results with TEM and N 2 physisorption yields quantitative agreement in particle size and qualitative agreement in average specific pore volume. IM-MS uniquely shows how within a single UMN population, porosity increases with increasing particle size, consistent with the proposed UMN growth mechanism. In total, we demonstrate the potential of IM-MS as a standard approach for the characterization of structurally complex nanoparticle populations, as it yields size-specific structural distribution functions.
