This article discusses the concept of transnationalism and its relevance to Australian society and culture. It highlights the importance of understanding movement and change across various spheres of activity in a multicultural society like Australia. The article focuses on the representation of transnational Australian identity in life writing, particularly in refugee writing, travel writing, and migrant writing. It also explores the value of collective biography and the role of webcomics and graphic novels in exposing the violences of Australia's border spaces. Additionally, the article examines the relationship between language and culture in memoirs by Australian journalists with non-Anglo migrant backgrounds. Finally, it discusses the craft of writing about trauma and the ethical considerations involved in publishing and promoting memoirs. In this paper I focus on the penultimate installment of the oeuvre of the much-celebrated Franco-Senegalese writer Fatou Diome, whose largely autobiographical work has garnered a wide following and a lucrative contract with the Flammarion publishing house. I propose that Diome's 2010 novel Celles qui attendent strongly contributes to a discourse surrounding the roles of males and females in an African economy increasingly dominated by migration. Diome started as a writer who portrayed the empowered role of the female migrant, who is able to accumulate financial capital in Europe and send it back to Africa in order for males to slowly hoard goods and start businesses. Her more recent work, however, has been marked by a shift to reflect a portrait of Senegalese society and migration that is backed by sociological studies: men take on the role of migrants, tempted by 'marchands d'illusions' 'merchants of illusions,' but are also determined to get away from social pressures in order to accumulate their own set of experiences in the world, at a distance from the expectations of a traditional African society. Women, on the other hand, are left in extreme proximity to the problems of everyday life on a cash-starved continent, as they have to go about the business of surviving and raising children, engaging in many forms of hoarding that have to do with accumulating finance, memories and myths. This article examines the adaptation from book to film of a recent Senegalese tale of clandestine migration by boat. Abasse Ndione’s Mbëkë mi (2008) foregrounds the motivations for migration for Senegalese youth and provokes readers’ sympathy for its migrating characters. It uses a heteroglossic lexicon which is nevertheless anchored in the French language on which the author must rely in order to publish his message. Moussa Touré’s film La Pirogue, by contrast, although sponsored by agents promoting francophonie, includes French and African languages in equal measure. Collaborations between African immigrants in Italy and Italian writers led to the production of several socio-literary works in the early 1990s. The Italian contributors appear to have acted as linguistic experts who allowed (often Francophone) Africans to place representations of their lives and those of other immigrants in Italy into Italian discourse. The fruits of these collaborations are thus, to some extent, translations of oral stories. The collaboration between Saidou Moussa Ba and Alessandro Micheletti, which led to the novel/educational manual La promessa di Hamadi, is examined in order to tease out the process and consequences of such intercultural collaborative translation.
