We study the weak equivalence principle in the context of modified dispersion relations, a prevalent approach to quantum gravity phenomenology. We find that generic modified dispersion relations violate the weak equivalence principle. The acceleration in general depends on the mass of the test body, unless the Hamiltonian is either two-homogeneous in the test particles' 4-momenta or the corresponding Lagrangian differs from the homogeneous case by a total derivative only. The key ingredient of this calculation is a $3+1$ decomposition of the parametrization invariant relativistic test particle action derived from the dispersion relation. Additionally, we apply a perturbative expansion in the test particle's spatial velocity and the inverse speed of light. To quantify our result, we provide a general formula for the E\"otv\'os factor of modified dispersion relations. As a specific example, we study the $\kappa$-Poincar\'e dispersion relation. Comparing the ensuing non-vanishing E\"otv\'os factor to recent data from the MICROSCOPE experiment, we obtain a bound of $\kappa^{-1}\geq10^{15}{\rm GeV}/c^2.$., Comment: 18 pages

We study transformations of the dynamical fields - a metric, a flat affine connection and a scalar field - in scalar-teleparallel gravity theories. The theories we study belong either to the general teleparallel setting, where no further condition besides vanishing curvature is imposed on the affine connection, or the symmetric or metric teleparallel gravity, where one also imposes vanishing torsion or nonmetricity, respectively. For each of these three settings, we find a general class of scalar-teleparallel action functionals which retain their form under the aforementioned field transformations. This is achieved by generalizing the constraint of vanishing torsion or nonmetricity to non-vanishing, but algebraically constrained torsion or nonmetricity. We find a number of invariant quantities which characterize these theories independently of the choice of field variables, and relate these invariants to analogues of the conformal frames known from scalar-curvature gravity. Using these invariants, we are able to identify a number of physically relevant subclasses of scalar-teleparallel theories. We propose a general class of scalar-teleparallel theories, which are based on a scalar field which is coupled to a flat connection with torsion and nonmetricity, and study its post-Newtonian limit using the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism. We find that among this class there are theories whose post-Newtonian limit fully agrees with general relativity; for others only the parameters $\beta$ and $\gamma$ deviate from their general relativity values $\beta = \gamma = 1$, while all other parameters remain the same, thus preserving total momentum conservation, local Lorentz invariance and local position invariance; finally, we also find theories whose post-Newtonian limit is pathological. Our main result is a full classification of the proposed theories into these different cases. In this work, we study spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in 1-parameter New General Relativity (NGR), a specific theory in teleparallel gravity which is constructed from the three possible quadratic scalars obtained from torsion with arbitrary coefficients satisfying the requirements for the absence of ghosts. In this class of modified theories of gravity, the observable effects of gravity result from the torsion rather than the curvature of the spacetime. Unlike in GR, where the fundamental quantity is the metric from which the Levi-Civita connection is derived, in teleparallel theories of gravity the fundamental variable is the tetrad, from which one constructs the metric and the teleparallel connection. We consider the most general tetrad for spherical symmetry and we derive the corresponding field equations. Under adequate assumptions, we find three different branches of vacuum solutions and discuss their associated phenomenology. In particular, we analyze the photon sphere, the classical tests of GR such as the light deflection, the Shapiro delay, and the perihelion shift, and also the Komar mass, while providing a detailed comparison with their Schwarzschild spacetime counterparts. Finally, we analyze how the observational imprints from accretion disks and shadows are affected in comparison with their GR counterparts, and conclude that the free parameters of the model might induce additional attractive or repulsive effects to the propagation of photons, depending on their values., Comment: 17 pages, several figures, journal version

We study linear cosmological perturbations in the most general teleparallel gravity setting, where gravity is mediated by the torsion and nonmetricity of a flat connection alongside the metric. For a general linear perturbation of this geometry around a homogeneous and isotropic background geometry, we derive the irreducible decomposition of the perturbation variables, as well as their behavior under gauge transformations, i.e., infinitesimal diffeomorphisms generated by a vector field. In addition, we also study these properties for the most general set of matter variables and gravitational field equations. We then make use of these result to construct gauge-invariant perturbation variables, using a general approach based on gauge conditions. We further calculate these quantities also in the metric and symmetric teleparallel geometries, where nonmetricity or torsion is imposed to vanish. To illustrate our results, we derive the energy-momentum-hypermomentum conservation equations for both the cosmological background and the linear perturbations. There has been growing interest in $f(Q)$ gravity, which has led to significant advancements in the field. However, it is important to note that most studies in this area were based on the coincident gauge, thus overlooking the impact of the connection degrees of freedom. In this work, we pay special attention to the connection when studying perturbations in general teleparallel, metric teleparallel, and symmetric teleparallel theories of gravity. We do not just examine perturbations in the metric, but also in the affine connection. To illustrate this, we investigate cosmological perturbations in $f(G)$, $f(T)$, and $f(Q)$ gravity with and without matter in form of an additional scalar field for spatially flat and curved FLRW geometries. Our perturbative analysis reveals that for general $f(Q)$ backgrounds, there are up to seven degrees of freedom, depending on the background connection. This is in perfect agreement with the upper bound on degrees of freedom established for the first time in $\href{https://doi.org/10.1002/prop.202300185}{Fortschr. Phys. 2023, 2300185}$. In $f(G)$ and $f(T)$ gravity theories, only two tensor modes propagate in the gravity sector on generic curved cosmological backgrounds, indicating strong coupling problems. In the context of $f(Q)$ cosmology, we find that for a particular background connection, where all seven modes propagate, there is at least one ghost degree of freedom. For all other choices of the connection the ghost can be avoided at the cost of strong coupling problem, where only four degrees of freedom propagate. Hence, all of the cosmologies within the teleparallel families of theories in form of $f(G)$, $f(T)$, and $f(Q)$ suffer either from strong coupling or from ghost instabilities. We study the dynamics of a collisionless kinetic gas in the most general static, spherically symmetric dispersion relation. For a static, spherically symmetric kinetic gas, we derive the most general solution to these dynamics, and find that any solution is given by a one-particle distribution function which depends on three variables. For two particular solutions, describing a shell of monoenergetic orbiting particles and a purely radial inflow, we calculate the particle density as a function of the radial coordinate. As a particular example, we study a $\kappa$-Poincar\'e modification of the Schwarzschild metric dispersion relation and derive its influence on the particle density. We study metric teleparallel geometries, which can either be defined through a Lorentzian metric and flat, metric-compatible affine connection, or a tetrad and a flat spin connection, which are invariant under the transitive action of a four-dimensional Lie group on their spatial equal-time hypersurfaces. There are three such group actions, and their corresponding spatial hypersurfaces belong to the Bianchi types II, III and IX, respectively. For each of these three symmetry groups, we determine the most general teleparallel geometry, and find that it is parametrized by six functions of time, one of which can be eliminated by the choice of the time coordinate. We write down the teleparallel equivalent to Hassan-Rosen bigravity, which is written using a torsionful but curvature-free connection. The theories only differ by a boundary term. The equivalence was proven, both by using perturbation theory and Hamiltonian analysis. It is further shown how one can construct novel bigravity theories within the teleparallel framework. Some of those are analyzed through perturbation theory, and it is found that all of the considered novel bigravity theories suffer from pathologies. In particular, it is found that a construction with two copies of new general relativity leads to ghostly degrees of freedom which are not present in the single tetrad teleparallel corresponding theory. We demonstrate how the teleparallel framework allows to easily create theories with derivative interaction. However, it is shown through perturbation theory that the simplest model is not viable. Furthermore, we demonstrate some steps in the Hamiltonian analysis of teleparallel bigravity with two copies of new general relativity and some toy models. We derive the most general homogeneous and isotropic teleparallel geometries, defined by a metric and a flat, affine connection. We find that there are five branches of connection solutions, which are connected via several limits, and can further be restricted to the torsion-free and metric-compatible cases. We apply our results to several classes of general teleparallel gravity theories and derive their cosmological dynamics for all five branches. In this work we study diffeomorphism-invariant metric-affine theories of gravity from the point of view of self-interacting field theories on top of Minkowski spacetime (or other background). We revise how standard metric theories couple to their own energy-momentum tensor, and discuss the generalization of these ideas when torsion and nonmetricity are also present. We review the computation of the corresponding currents through the Hilbert and canonical (Noether) prescriptions, emphasizing the potential ambiguities arising from both. We also provide the extension of this consistent self-coupling procedure to the vielbein formalism, so that fermions can be included in the matter sector. In addition, we clarify some subtle issues regarding previous discussions on the self-coupling problem for metric theories, both General Relativity and its higher derivative generalizations. In general relativity, the only dynamical field describing the gravitational interaction of matter, is the metric. It induces the causal structure of spacetime, governs the motion of physical bodies through its Levi-Civita connection, and mediates gravity via the curvature of this connection. While numerous modified theories of gravity retain these principles, it is also possible to introduce another affine connection as a fundamental field, and consider its properties - curvature, torsion, nonmetricity - as the mediators of gravity. In the most general case, this gives rise to the class of metric-affine gravity theories, while restricting to metric-compatible connections, for which nonmetricity vanishes, comprises the class of Poincar\'e gauge theories. We study tensor perturbations around the most general cosmologically symmetric backgrounds in a class of teleparallel gravity theories known as New General Relativity. These theories comprise a one-parameter class, which is fully consistent with observations at the post-Newtonian level, and which contains the teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity as a special case. We find that for a particular class of cosmological background geometries these theories exhibit gravitational wave birefringence and dispersion, i.e., the dispersion relation for gravitational waves depends on their polarization and wave number. The strength of this effect is directly related to the spatial curvature of the cosmological background and the parameter describing the deviation of the theory from General Relativity. The study of cosmological perturbation theory in $f(T)$ gravity is a topic of great interest in teleparallel gravity since this is one of the simplest generalizations of the theory that modifies the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity. In this work, we explore the possibility of a non-flat FLRW background solution and perform perturbations for positively as well as negatively curved spatial geometries, together with a comparison to the flat case. We determine the generalized behaviour of the perturbative modes for this non-flat FLRW setting for arbitrary $f(T)$ models, when the most general homogeneous and isotropic background tetrads are used. In this work we continue the systematic study of observable effects emerging from modified dispersion relations. We study the motion of test particles subject to a general first order modification of the general relativistic dispersion relation as well as subject to the $\kappa$-Poincar\'e dispersion relation in spherical symmetry. We derive the corrections to the photon sphere, the black hole shadow, the Shapiro delay and the light deflection and identify the additional dependence of these observables on the photons' four momentum, which leads to measurable effects that can be compared to experimental data. Local Lorentz transformations play an important role in teleparallel gravity theories, in which a tetrad is conventionally employed as a fundamental field variable describing the gravitational field. It is commonly understood that modifications of general relativity in the teleparallel framework break a certain notion of local Lorentz invariance, which is present in the pure tetrad formulation of such theories, while another notion present in the covariant formulation is preserved. We present an extension to the gauge-invariant formulation of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, which allows its application to symmetric teleparallel gravity theories. In its original formulation, the gauge-invariant PPN formalism makes use of a gauge-invariant perturbative expansion of tensor fields; however, one of the fundamental gravitational field variables in symmetric teleparallel gravity theories is a flat, torsion-free connection, hence not a tensor field. In this article we calculate the post-Newtonian limit of a general class of scalar-nonmetricity theories of gravity. The action is assumed to be a free function of the nonmetricity scalar, the kinetic term of the scalar field, two derivative couplings and the scalar field itself. We use the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism to solve the arising field equations for the case of a massless scalar field in order to compare several subclasses of this theory to solar system observations. In particular, we find several classes of theories which are indistinguishable from general relativity on the post-Newtonian level and therefore, should be studied further. Symmetric teleparallel gravity theories, in which the gravitational interaction is attributed to the nonmetricity of a flat, symmetric, but not metric-compatible affine connection, have been a topic of growing interest in recent studies. Numerous works study the cosmology of symmetric teleparallel gravity assuming a flat Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker metric, while working in the so-called "coincident gauge", further assuming that the connection coefficients vanish. However, little attention has been paid to the fact that both of these assumptions rely on the freedom to choose a particular coordinate system in order to simplify the metric or the connection, and that they may, in general, not be achieved simultaneously. Here we construct the most general symmetric teleparallel geometry obeying the conditions of homogeneity and isotropy, without making any assumptions on the properties of the coordinates, and present our results in both the usual cosmological coordinates and in the coincident gauge. We find that in general these coordinates do not agree, and that assuming both to hold simultaneously allows only for a very restricted class of geometries. For the general case, we derive the energy-momentum-hypermomentum conservation relations and the cosmological dynamics of selected symmetric teleparallel gravity theories. Our results show that the symmetric teleparallel connection in general contributes another scalar quantity into the cosmological dynamics, which decouples only for a specific class of theories from the dynamics of the metric, and only if the most simple geometry is chosen, in which both assumed coordinate systems agree. The paper introduces a general mathematical framework for action based field theories on Finsler spacetimes. As most often fields on Finsler spacetime (e.g., the Finsler fundamental function or the resulting metric tensor) have a homogeneous dependence on the tangent directions of spacetime, we construct the appropriate configuration bundles whose sections are such homogeneous fields; on these configuration bundles, the tools of coordinate free calculus of variations can be consistently applied to obtain field equations. Moreover, we prove that general covariance of natural Finsler field Lagrangians leads to an averaged energy-momentum conservation law which, in the particular case of Lorentzian spacetimes, is equivalent to the usual, pointwise energy-momentum covariant conservation law., Comment: 48 pages, 1 figure

Teleparallel gravity has significantly increased in popularity in recent decades, bringing attention to Einstein's other theory of gravity. In this Review, we relate this form of geometry to the broader metric-affine approach to forming gravitational theories where we describe a systematic way of constructing consistent teleparallel theories that respect certain physical conditions such as local Lorentz invariance. We first use teleparallel gravity to formulate a teleparallel equivalent of general relativity which is dynamically equivalent to general relativity but which may have different behaviors for other scenarios, such as quantum gravity. After setting this foundation, we describe the plethora of modified teleparallel theories of gravity that have been proposed in the literature. In the second part of the Review, we first survey works in teleparallel astrophysics literature where we focus on the open questions in this regime of physics. We then discuss the cosmological consequences for the various formulations of teleparallel gravity. We do this at background level by exploring works using various approaches ranging from dynamical systems to Noether symmetries, and more. Naturally, we then discuss perturbation theory, firstly by giving a concise approach in which this can be applied in teleparallel gravity theories and then apply it to a number of important theories in the literature. Finally, we examine works in observational and precision cosmology across the plethora of proposal theories. This is done using some of the latest observations and is used to tackle cosmological tensions which may be alleviated in teleparallel cosmology. We also introduce a number of recent works in the application of machine learning to gravity, we do this through deep learning and Gaussian processes, together with discussions about other approaches in the literature., Comment: 391 pages, 55 figures

Gravitational waves (GWs) have opened a new window on fundamental physics in a number of important ways. The next generation of GW detectors may reveal more information about the polarization structure of GWs. Additionally, there is growing interest in theories of gravity beyond GR. One such theory which remains viable within the context of recent measurements of the speed of propagation of GWs is the teleparallel analogue of Horndeski gravity. In this work, we explore the polarization structure of this newly proposed formulation of Horndeski theory. In curvature-based gravity, Horndeski theory is almost synonymous with extensions to GR since it spans a large portion of these possible extensions. We perform this calculation by taking perturbations about a Minkowski background and consider which mode propagates. The result is that the polarization structure depends on the choice of model parameters in the teleparallel Horndeski Lagrangian with a maximum of seven propagating degrees of freedom. While the curvature-based Horndeski results follows as a particular limit within this setup, we find a much richer structure of both massive and massless cases which produce scalar--vector--tensor propagating degrees of freedom. We also find that the GW polarization that emerges from the teleparallel analogue of Horndeski gravity results in analogous massive and massless modes which take on at most four polarizations in the massless sector and two scalar ones in the massive sector. In none of the cases do we find vector polarizations.

General Relativity and the $\Lambda$CDM framework are currently the standard lore and constitute the concordance paradigm. Nevertheless, long-standing open theoretical issues, as well as possible new observational ones arising from the explosive development of cosmology the last two decades, offer the motivation and lead a large amount of research to be devoted in constructing various extensions and modifications. All extended theories and scenarios are first examined under the light of theoretical consistency, and then are applied to various geometrical backgrounds, such as the cosmological and the spherical symmetric ones. Their predictions at both the background and perturbation levels, and concerning cosmology at early, intermediate and late times, are then confronted with the huge amount of observational data that astrophysics and cosmology are able to offer recently. Theories, scenarios and models that successfully and efficiently pass the above steps are classified as viable and are candidates for the description of Nature. This work is a Review of the recent developments in the fields of gravity and cosmology, presenting the state of the art, high-lighting the open problems, and outlining the directions of future research. We study the variational principle and derivation of the field equations for different classes of teleparallel gravity theories, using both their metric-affine and covariant tetrad formulations. These theories have in common that in addition to the tetrad or metric, they employ a flat connection as additional field variable, but differ by the presence of absence of torsion and nonmetricity for this independent connection. Besides the different underlying geometric formulation using a tetrad or metric as fundamental field variable, one has different choices to introduce the conditions of vanishing curvature, torsion and nonmetricity, either by imposing them a priori and correspondingly restricting the variation of the action when the field equations are derived, or by using Lagrange multipliers. Special care must be taken, since these conditions form non-holonomic constraints. Here we show explicitly that all of the aforementioned approaches are equivalent, and that the same set of field equations is obtained, independently of the choice of the geometric formulation and variation procedure. We present a package for the computer algebra system Mathematica, which implements the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. This package, named xPPN, is built upon the widely used tensor algebra package suite xAct, and in particular the package xTensor therein. The main feature of xPPN is to provide functions to perform a proper $3+1$ decomposition of tensors, as well as a perturbative expansion in so-called velocity orders, which are central tasks in the PPN formalism. Further, xPPN implements various rules for quantities appearing in the PPN formalism, which aid in perturbatively solving the field equations of any metric theory of gravity. We consider the most general teleparallel theory of gravity whose action is a linear combination of the five scalar invariants which are quadratic in the torsion tensor. Since two of these invariants possess odd parity, they naturally allow for a coupling to pseudo-scalar fields, thus yielding a Lagrangian which is even under parity transformations. In analogy to similar fields in gauge theories, we call these pseudo-scalar fields \emph{teleparallel axions}. For the most general coupling of a single axion field, we derive the cosmological field equations. We find that for a family of cosmologically symmetric teleparallel geometries, which possess non-vanishing axial torsion, the axion coupling contributes to the cosmological dynamics in the early universe. Most remarkably, this contribution is also present when the axion is coupled to the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity, hence allowing for a canonical coupling of a pseudo-scalar to general relativity. For this case we schematically present the influence of the axion coupling on the fixed points in the cosmological dynamics understood as dynamical system. In this article we analyze the post-Newtonian approximation of a generalization of the symmetric teleparallel gravity with the help of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. This class of theories is based on a free function of the five independent quadratic contractions of the non-metricity tensor. By calculating the PPN metric of these theories, we can restrict the Taylor coefficients of the free function with the help of the PPN parameters and their observational bounds. We find two families of theories whose PPN parameters are identical to those of general relativity, and thus in full agreement with observations. For three further families, we find that only the PPN parameters $\beta$ and $\gamma$ deviate, but can be brought arbitrarily close to their general relativity values by an appropriate choice of the Lagrangian, so that also these families contain candidate theories which agree with observations. The remaining theories either possess no well-defined solution of the post-Newtonian field equations, or possess a post-Newtonian limit which exceeds the form assumed in the PPN formalism., Comment: 13 pages

We review different approaches to the Hamiltonian analysis of teleparallel theories of gravity. In particular the Hamiltonian analysis for $f(\mathbb{T})$ theories led to disputed results in the literature. The aim of this review is to relate the different notations and assumptions in the different approaches in a comprehensive way, so that they can be compared more easily. To do this we present the primary constraints of the $f({\mathbb{T}_{\textrm{NGR}}})$ gravity class of theories for the first time. We discuss linear perturbations of the most general class of teleparallel spacetimes with cosmological symmetry, and perform a decomposition of these perturbations into irreducible components. We then study their behavior under gauge transformations, i.e., infinitesimal diffeomorphisms of the background spacetime, and derive a full set of gauge-invariant perturbation variables. Comparing our results with perturbations around the diagonal tetrad corresponding to a spatially flat teleparallel background cosmology, we see the appearance of new terms which depend on the particular choice of a cosmologically symmetric background tetrad. Recently, a proposal to obtain a finite contribution of second derivative order to the gravitational field equations in \(D = 4\) dimensions from a renormalized Gauss-Bonnet term in the action has received a wave of attention. It triggered a discussion whether the employed renormalization procedure yields a well-defined theory. One of the main criticisms is based on the fact that the resulting field equations cannot be obtained as the Euler-Lagrange equations from a diffeomorphism invariant action. In this work, we use techniques from the inverse calculus of variations to point out that the renormalized truncated Gauss-Bonnet equations cannot be obtained from any action at all (either diffeomorphism invariant or not), in any dimension. Then, we employ canonical variational completion, based on the notion of Vainberg-Tonti Lagrangian - which consists in adding a canonically defined correction term to a given system of equations, so as to make them derivable from an action. To apply this technique to the suggested $4$D renormalized Gauss-Bonnet equations, we extend the variational completion algorithm to some classes of PDE systems for which the usual integral providing the Vainberg-Tonti Lagrangian diverges. We discover that in $D>4$ the suggested field equations can be variationally completed, choosing either the metric or its inverse as field variables; both approaches yield consistently the same Lagrangian, whose variation leads to fourth order field equations. We consider the notion of cosmological symmetry, i.e., spatial homogeneity and isotropy, in the field of teleparallel gravity and geometry, and provide a complete classification of all homogeneous and isotropic teleparallel geometries. We explicitly construct these geometries by independently employing three different methods, and prove that all of them lead to the same class of geometries. Further, we derive their properties, such as the torsion tensor and its irreducible decomposition, as well as the transformation behavior under change of the time coordinate, and derive the most general cosmological field equations for a number of teleparallel gravity theories. In addition to homogeneity and isotropy, we extend the notion of cosmological symmetry to also include spatial reflections, and find that this further restricts the possible teleparallel geometries. A description of many-particle systems, which is more fundamental than the fluid approach, is to consider them as a kinetic gas. In this approach the dynamical variable in which the properties of the system are encoded, is the distribution of the gas particles in position and velocity space, called 1-particle distribution function (1PDF). However, when the gravitational field of a kinetic gas is derived via the Einstein-Vlasov equations, the information about the velocity distribution of the gas particles is averaged out and therefore lost. We propose to derive the gravitational field of a kinetic gas directly from its 1PDF, taking the velocity distribution fully into account. We consider the newly proposed Bahamonde-Dialektopoulos-Levi Said (BDLS) theory, that is the Horndeski analog in the teleparallel framework and thus contains a non-minimally coupled scalar field, including higher order derivatives, that leads however to second order field equations both for the tetrad and the scalar field. This theory was mostly constructed to revive those models that were severely constrained in the scalar-tensor version of the theory from the GW170817, but includes also much richer phenomenology because of the nature of the torsion tensor. Applying the cosmological principle to Finsler spacetimes, we identify the Lie Algebra of symmetry generators of spatially homogeneous and isotropic Finsler geometries, thus generalising Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker geometry. In particular, we find the most general spatially homogeneous and isotropic Berwald spacetimes, which are Finsler spacetimes that can be regarded as closest to pseudo-Riemannian geometry. They are defined by a Finsler Lagrangian built from a zero-homogeneous function on the tangent bundle, which encodes the velocity dependence of the Finsler Lagrangian in a very specific way. We provide a comprehensive overview of metric-affine geometries with spherical symmetry, which may be used in order to solve the field equations for generic gravity theories which employ these geometries as their field variables. We discuss the most general class of such geometries, which we display both in the metric-Palatini formulation and in the tetrad / spin connection formulation, and show its characteristic properties: torsion, curvature and nonmetricity. We then use these properties to derive a classification of all possible subclasses of spherically symmetric metric-affine geometries, depending on which of the aforementioned quantities are vanishing or non-vanishing. We discuss both the cases of the pure rotation group $\mathrm{SO}(3)$, which has been previously studied in the literature, and extend these previous results to the full orthogonal group $\mathrm{O}(3)$, which also includes reflections. As an example for a potential physical application of the results we present here, we study circular orbits arising from autoparallel motion. The occurrence of system-scale coherent structures, so-called condensates, is a well-known phenomenon in two-dimensional turbulence. Here, the transition to condensate formation is investigated as a function of the magnitude of the force and for different types of forcing. Random forces with constant mean energy input lead to a supercritical transition, while forcing through a small-scale linear instability results in a subcritical transition with bistability and hysteresis. That is, the transition to condensate formation in two-dimensional turbulence is nonuniversal. For the supercritical case we quantify the effect of large-scale friction on the value of the critical exponent and the location of the critical point.

We propose a new model for the description of a gravitating multi particle system, viewed as a kinetic gas. The properties of the, colliding or non-colliding, particles are encoded into a so called one-particle distribution function, which is a density on the space of allowed particle positions and velocities, i.e. on the tangent bundle of the spacetime manifold. We argue that an appropriate theory of gravity, describing the gravitational field generated by a kinetic gas, must also be modeled on the tangent bundle. The most natural mathematical framework for this task is Finsler spacetime geometry. Following this line of argumentation, we construct a coupling between the kinetic gas and a recently proposed Finsler geometric extension of general relativity. We present an approach to the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism which is based on gauge-invariant higher order perturbation theory. This approach divides the components of the metric perturbations into gauge-invariant quantities, which carry information about the physical system under consideration, and pure gauge quantities, which describe the choice of the coordinate system. This separation generally leads to a simplification of the PPN procedure, since only the gauge-invariant quantities appear in the field equations and must be determined by solving them. Another simplification arises from the fact that the gauge-invariant approach supersedes the necessity to first choose a gauge for solving the gravitational field equations and later transforming the obtained solution into the standard PPN gauge, as it is conventionally done in the PPN formalism, whose standard PPN gauge is determined only after the full solution is known. In this article we derive the post-Newtonian limit of a class of teleparallel theories of gravity, where the action is a free function $L(T,X,Y,\phi)$ of the Torsion scalar $T$ and scalar quantities $X$ and $Y$ built from the dynamical scalar field $\phi$. We restrict the analysis to a massless scalar field in order to use the parameterized post-Newtonian formalism without modifications, such as introducing an effective gravitational constant which depends on the distance between the interacting masses. In particular the results show a class of fully-conservative theories of gravity, where the only non-vanishing parameters are $\gamma$ and $\beta$. A theory of gravity is deduced from the axioms of the premetric program. The starting point is the conservation of energy and momenta, and the equivalence of gravitation and inertia. The latter is what leads to the framework of the so called purified gravity. The local and linear constitutive relation has 14 components when it is assumed to be metrical, but the compatibility of the constitutive relation with an action principle fixes uniquely the theory of Coincident General Relativity. The premetric formalism of purified gravity has a direct analogy with massive electromagnetism, the Planck mass corresponding to the Proca mass of the gauge boson. We consider a recently proposed class of extended teleparallel theories of gravity, which entail a scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to the torsion of a flat, metric-compatible connection. This class of scalar-torsion theories of gravity is constructed in analogy to and as a direct extension of the well-studied class of scalar-curvature gravity theories, and has various common features, such as the conformal frame freedom. For this class we determine the parametrized post-Newtonian limit, both for a massive and a massless scalar field. In the massive case, we determine the effective gravitational constant and the post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$, both of which depend on the distance between the gravitating and test masses. In the massless case, we calculate the full set of parameters and find that only $\gamma$ and $\beta$ potentially deviate from their general relativity values. In a recent work we derived the kinematic Hamiltonian and primary constraints of the new general relativity class of teleparallel gravity theories and showed that these theories can be grouped in 9 classes, based on the presence or absence of primary constraints in their Hamiltonian. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach towards this result, by using differential forms instead of tensor components throughout the calculation. We derive the post-Newtonian limit of a general class of teleparallel gravity theories, whose action is given by a free function of three scalar quantities obtained from the torsion of the teleparallel connection. This class of theories is chosen to be sufficiently generic in order to include the $f(T)$ class of theories as well as new general relativity as subclasses. To derive its post-Newtonian limit, we first impose the Weitzenb\"ock gauge, and then introduce a post-Newtonian approximation of the tetrad field around a Minkowski background solution. Our results show that the class of theories we consider is fully conservative, with only the parameters $\beta$ and $\gamma$ potentially deviating from their general relativity values. It is known that one can formulate an action in teleparallel gravity which is equivalent to general relativity, up to a boundary term. In this geometry we have vanishing curvature, and non-vanishing torsion. The action is constructed by three different contractions of torsion with specific coefficients. By allowing these coefficients to be arbitrary we get the theory which is called `new general relativity'. In this note, the Lagrangian for new general relativity is written down in ADM-variables. In order to write down the Hamiltonian we need to invert the velocities to canonical variables. However, the inversion depends on the specific combination of constraints satisfied by the theory (which depends on the coefficients in the Lagrangian). Teleparallel geometry utilizes Weitzenb\"ock connection which has nontrivial torsion but no curvature and does not directly follow from the metric like Levi-Civita connection. In extended teleparallel theories, for instance in $f(T)$ or scalar-torsion gravity, the connection must obey its antisymmetric field equations. So far only a few analytic solutions were known. In this note we solve the $f(T,\phi)$ gravity antisymmetric vacuum field equations for a generic rotating tetrad ansatz in Weyl canonical coordinates, and find the corresponding spin connection coefficients. By a coordinate transformation we present the solution also in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, often used to study rotating solutions in general relativity. The covariant formulation of teleparallel gravity theories must include the spin connection, which has 6 degrees of freedom. One can, however, always choose a gauge such that the spin connection is put to zero. In principle this gauge may affect counting of degrees of freedom in the Hamiltonian analysis.
