Abstract: type:Journal Article, By means of neutron scattering techniques we have investigated the frustrated pyrochlore magnetHo2Sn2O7, which was found to show ferromagnetic spin-ice behavior below T.1.4 K by susceptibilitymeasurements. High-resolution powder neutron diffraction shows no detectable disorder of the lattice, whichimplies the appearance of a random magnetic state solely by frustrated geometry, i.e., the corner sharingtetrahedra. Magnetic inelastic scattering spectra show that Ho magnetic moments behave as an Ising spinsystem at low temperatures and that the spin fluctuation has static character. The system remains in a shortrange-ordered state down to at least T50.4 K. By analyzing the wave-vector dependence of the magneticscattering using a mean-field theory, it is shown that the Ising spins interact via the dipolar interaction.Therefore we conclude that Ho2Sn2O7 belongs to the dipolar-spin-ice family. Abstract: preprint: https://doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-1622610/v2; International audience; Sample-return missions allow the study of materials collected directly from celestial bodies, unbiased by atmospheric entry effects and/or terrestrial alteration and contamination phenomena, using state-of-the-art techniques which are available only in a laboratory environment—but only if the collected material stays pristine. The scarcity of outer-space unaltered material recovered until now makes this material extremely precious for the potential scientific insight it can bring. To maximize the scientific output of current and future sample-return missions, the scientific community needs to plan for ways of storing, handling, and measuring this precious material while preserving their pristine state for as long as the ‘invasiveness’ of measurements allows. In July 2021, as part of the Hayabusa2 (JAXA) “Stone” preliminary examination team, we received several microscopic particles from the asteroid Ryugu, with the goal of performing IR hyper-spectral imaging and IR micro-tomography studies. Here, we describe the sample transfer, handling methods and analytical pipeline we implemented to study this very precious material while minimizing and surveilling their alteration history on Earth.

Abstract: Theileria annulata is an apicomplexan parasite that infects and transforms bovine macrophages that disseminate throughout the animal causing a leukaemia-like disease called tropical theileriosis. Using deep RNAseq of T. annulata-infected B cells and macrophages we identify a set of microRNAs induced by infection, whose expression diminishes upon loss of the hyper-disseminating phenotype of virulent transformed macrophages. We describe how infection-induced upregulation of miR-126-5p ablates JIP-2 expression to release cytosolic JNK to translocate to the nucleus and trans-activate AP-1-driven transcription of mmp9 to promote tumour dissemination. In non-disseminating attenuated macrophages miR-126-5p levels drop, JIP-2 levels increase, JNK1 is retained in the cytosol leading to decreased c-Jun phosphorylation and dampened AP-1-driven mmp9 transcription. We show that variation in miR-126-5p levels depends on the tyrosine phosphorylation status of AGO2 that is regulated by Grb2-recruitment of PTP1B. In attenuated macrophages Grb2 levels drop resulting in less PTP1B recruitment, greater AGO2 phosphorylation, less miR-126-5p associated with AGO2 and a consequent rise in JIP-2 levels. Changes in miR-126-5p levels therefore, underpin both the virulent hyper-dissemination and the attenuated dissemination of T. annulata-infected macrophages., Author summary Theileria annulata-infected bovine macrophages lose their hyper-disseminating virulent phenotype during long-term culture and are used as attenuated live vaccines to fight tropical theileriosis. Deep microRNA sequencing revealed that infection of both B cells and macrophages alters the expression of a large number of host cell microRNAs. We focused on miR-126-5p as its expression was induced by infection, but diminished in attenuated macrophages that had lost their disease causing disseminating phenotype. We show that miR-126-5p in virulent macrophages directly targets and suppresses a cytosolic scaffold protein called JNK-Interacting Protein-2 (JIP-2), so liberating JNK1 to enter the nucleus and phosphorylate c-Jun. This activates AP-1-driven transcription of mmp9 that promotes tumour dissemination. In virulent macrophages, an adaptor protein called Grb2 recruits the tyrosine phosphatase PTP1B to AGO2 so decreasing AGO2 phosphorylation to increase miR-126-5p levels. By contrast, in attenuated macrophages AGO2 tyrosine phosphorylation increases and miR-126-5p levels drop leading to a regain in JIP-2 expression that retains JNK1 in the cytosol. This leads to decreased nuclear c-Jun phosphorylation and reduced mmp9 production. Thus, variations in miR-126-5p levels underpin both virulent hyper-dissemination and attenuation of T. annulata-transfected macrophages.

Abstract: International audience; Wetlands are the largest natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. The eddy covariance method provides robust measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CH4, but interpreting its spatiotemporal variations is challenging due to the co-occurrence of CH4 production, oxidation, and transport dynamics. Here, we estimate these three processes using a data-model fusion approach across 25 wetlands in temperate, boreal, and Arctic regions. Our data-constrained model—iPEACE—reasonably reproduced CH4 emissions at 19 of the 25 sites with normalized root mean square error of 0.59, correlation coefficient of 0.82, and normalized standard deviation of 0.87. Among the three processes, CH4 production appeared to be the most important process, followed by oxidation in explaining inter-site variations in CH4 emissions. Based on a sensitivity analysis, CH4 emissions were generally more sensitive to decreased water table than to increased gross primary productivity or soil temperature. For periods with leaf area index (LAI) of ≥20% of its annual peak, plant-mediated transport appeared to be the major pathway for CH4 transport. Abstract: International audience; In brown algae, the extracellular matrix (ECM) and its constitutive polymers play crucial roles in specialized functions, including algal growth and development. In this review we offer an integrative view of ECM construction in brown algae. We briefly report the chemical composition of its main constituents, and how these are interlinked in a structural model. We examine the ECM assembly at the tissue and cell level, with consideration on its structure in vivo and on the putative subcellular sites for the synthesis of its main constituents. We further discuss the biosynthetic pathways of two major polysaccharides, alginates and sulfated fucans, and the progress made beyond the candidate genes with the biochemical validation of encoded proteins. Key enzymes involved in the elongation of the glycan chains are still unknown and predictions have been made at the gene level. Here, we offer a re-examination of some glycosyltransferases and sulfotransferases from published genomes. Overall, our analysis suggests novel investigations to be performed at both the cellular and biochemical levels. First, to depict the location of polysaccharide structures in tissues. Secondly, to identify putative actors in the ECM synthesis to be functionally studied in the future.

This paper proposes an estimator which provides guaranteed upper bounds of the truncation error due to the CLN method. The error estimator is tested on an analytical model and a Finite Element model to validate the approach.

Abstract: International audience; PurposeX-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) deficiency, also known as the X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome of type 2 (XLP-2), is a rare immunodeficiency characterized by recurrent hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, splenomegaly, and inflammatory bowel disease. Variants in XIAP including missense, non-sense, frameshift, and deletions of coding exons have been reported to cause XIAP deficiency. We studied three young boys with immunodeficiency displaying XLP-2-like clinical features. No genetic variation in the coding exons of XIAP was identified by whole-exome sequencing (WES), although the patients exhibited a complete loss of XIAP expression.MethodsTargeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the entire locus of XIAP was performed on DNA samples from the three patients. Molecular investigations were assessed by gene reporter expression assays in HEK cells and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing in primary T cells.ResultsNGS of XIAP identified three distinct non-coding deletions in the patients that were predicted to be driven by repetitive DNA sequences. These deletions share a common region of 839 bp that encompassed the first non-coding exon of XIAP and contained regulatory elements and marks specific of an active promoter. Moreover, we showed that among the 839 bp, the exon was transcriptionally active. Finally, deletion of the exon by CRISPR-Cas9 in primary cells reduced XIAP protein expression.ConclusionsThese results identify a key promoter sequence contained in the first non-coding exon of XIAP. Importantly, this study highlights that sequencing of the non-coding exons that are not currently captured by WES should be considered in the genetic diagnosis when no variation is found in coding exons.

Abstract: Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We analyzed 17 Ryugu samples measuring 1 to 8 millimeters. Carbon dioxide–bearing water inclusions are present within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu’s parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials that formed at high temperatures, such as chondrules and calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions. Abstract: International audience; About 10 years ago, a protein family was shown for the first time to contain allergenic members, gibberellin-regulated protein (GRP). The first reported member was from peach, Pru p 7. One can hypothesize that it was not detected before because its physicochemical characteristics overlap with those of lipid transfer protein (LTP), a well-known allergen, or because the exposure to GRP increased due to an increase in the gibberellin phythormone level in plant food, either exogenous or endogenous. Like LTPs, GRPs are small cationic proteins with disulfide bridges, are resistant to heat and proteolytic cleavage, and are involved in the defense of the plant. Besides peach, GRP allergens have been described in Japanese apricot (Pru m 7), sweet cherry (Pru av 7), orange (Cit s 7), pomegranate (Pun g 7), bell pepper (Cap a 7), strawberry (Fra a GRP), and also in pollen with a restriction to Cupressaceae tree family (Cup s 7, Cry j 7, and Jun a 7). IgE cross-reactivities were described between GRPs, and the reported peach/cypress and citrus/cypress syndromes may therefore be explained because of these GRP cross-reactivities. GRPs are clinically relevant, and severe adverse reactions may sometimes occur in association with cofactors. More than 60% and up to 95% sequence identities are calculated between various allergenic GRPs, and three-dimensional models show a cleft in the molecule and predict at least three epitopic regions. The structure of the protein and its properties and the matrix effect in the original allergenic source should be unraveled to understand why, despite the ubiquity of the protein family in plants, only a few members are able to sensitize patients.

Abstract: Using sound velocity and attenuation measurements in high magnetic fields, we identify a new transition in the vortex lattice state of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). The transition, observed in magnetic fields exceeding 35 T and temperatures far below zero field $T_c$, is detected in the compression modulus of the vortex lattice, at a doping level $x=p=0.17$. Our theoretical analysis based on Eilenberger theory of vortex lattice shows that the transition corresponds to the long-sought 45 degrees rotation of the square vortex lattice, predicted to occur in $d$-wave superconductors near a van Hove singularity., Comment: Main text 5 pages, 3 figures, total 9 pages supplementary material included

Abstract: Eastward air-mass transport from the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) anticyclone in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) often involves eastward-shedding vortices, which can cover most of the Japanese archipelago. We investigated the aerosol characteristics of these vortices by analysing data from two lidar systems in Japan, at Tsukuba (36.1∘ N, 140.1∘ E) and Fukuoka (33.55∘ N, 130.36∘ E), during the summer of 2018. We observed several events with enhanced particle signals at Tsukuba at 15.5–18 km of altitude (at or above the local tropopause) during August–September 2018, with a backscattering ratio of ∼ 1.10 and particle depolarization of ∼ 5 % (i.e. not spherical, but more spherical than ice crystals). These particle characteristics may be consistent with those of solid aerosol particles, such as ammonium nitrate. Each event had a timescale of a few days. During the same study period, we also observed similar enhanced particle signals in the lower stratosphere at Fukuoka. The upper troposphere is often covered by cirrus clouds at both lidar sites. Backward trajectory calculations for these sites for days with enhanced particle signals in the lower stratosphere and days without indicate that the former air masses originated within the ASM anticyclone and the latter more from edge regions. Reanalysis carbon monoxide and satellite water vapour data indicate that eastward-shedding vortices were involved in the observed aerosol enhancements. Satellite aerosol data confirm that the period and latitudinal region were free from the direct influence of documented volcanic eruptions and high-latitude forest fires. Our results indicate that the Asian tropopause aerosol layer (ATAL) over the ASM region extends east towards Japan in association with the eastward-shedding vortices and that lidar systems in Japan can detect at least the lower-stratospheric portion of the ATAL during periods when the lower stratosphere is undisturbed by volcanic eruptions and forest fires. The upper-tropospheric portion of the ATAL is either depleted by tropospheric processes (convection and wet scavenging) during eastward transport or is obscured by much stronger cirrus cloud signals.

Abstract: International audience; The title nonplanar electron acceptor (1) fused with a selenadiazole ring selectively forms a crystalline charge-transfer complex (CT crystal) with 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN). On the other hand, the sulfur analogue (2) has less recognition ability and forms CT crystals with both 2,6-and 2,7-DMN. X-ray analyses of 1, 2, and their CT crystals revealed that the Se ••• N chalcogen bond (ChB) in 1 is strong enough to determine the crystal packing with the formation of a cavity suitable for 2,6-DMN. On the contrary, ChB through S ••• N contact in 2 competes with other weak interactions such as a C-H ••• N hydrogen bond. The stronger ChB involving Se is the key for 1 to separate 2,6-DMN (>97 wt%) from a complex isomer mixture containing ca. 10 wt% each of 2,6and 2,7-DMN by a simple, efficient and straightforward mixingfiltration-heating process.

Abstract: International audience; The Capsicum genus belongs to the Solanaceae family. Bell or chili peppers are consumed worldwide, but allergy to Capsicum is rare. It is involved in the celery-birch-mugwort-spice syndrome and cross-reactivities were reported with latex. Several allergens have been described, but only 2 are referenced in the World Health Organization/International Union of Immunological Societies allergen data bank, a thaumatin-like protein and a profilin. A patient allergic to bell/chili pepper, peach, orange and Japanese cedar pollen was clinically and biologically analyzed including direct and competitive immunoblots and basophil activation tests (BATs) with allergenic source extracts and recombinant gibberellin-regulated proteins (GRPs). The patient was shown to be sensitized to Cap a 7, the GRP of Capsicum annuum newly described herein. Cross-reactivities were demonstrated between various GRPs from bell/chili pepper, peach, orange and Japanese cedar pollen either in native form in the different extracts or as recombinant allergens. A similar immunoglobulin E reactivity was found also in Capsicum chinense and against snakin-1, the GRP from potato. The patient showed a positive BAT with recombinant Cry j 7, Pru p 7 and Cap a 7, but not with recombinant snakin-1. Despite the ubiquitous nature of GRPs in plants and the immunochemical cross-reactivity observed between different GRPs, clinically relevant sensitization to this protein family seems restricted to some allergenic sources, often associated with Cupressaceae pollen allergy, and to some patients, therefore reflecting very specific and peculiar mechanisms of conditional sensitization.

Abstract: This study explores the rigidity of Pickering-stabilised microbubbles subjected to low-amplitude ultrasound. Such microbubbles might be suitable ultrasound contrast agents. Using an adapted Rayleigh–Plesset equation, we modelled the dynamics of microbubbles with a 7.6-N m−1 shell stiffness under 1-MHz, 0.2-MPa sonication. Such dynamics were observed experimentally, too, using high-speed photography. The maximum expansions were agreeing with those predicted for Pickering-stabilised microbubbles. Subjecting microbubbles to multiple time-delayed pulses yielded the same result. We conclude that Pickering-stabilised microbubbles remain very stable at low acoustic amplitudes.

Abstract: International audience; An important approach to investigate intercellular connectivity via plasmodesmata is to visualize and track the movement of fluorescent proteins between cells. The intercellular connectivity is largely controlled by the size exclusion limit of the pores. Over the past few decades, the technique to observe and analyze intercellular movement of a fluorescent protein has been developed mainly in angiosperms such as Arabidopsis thaliana. We recently applied the corresponding system to track the intercellular movement of the fluorescent protein Dendra2 in the moss Physcomitrium (Physcomitrella) patens. The protonemal tissues are-2-particularly suited for observation of the intercellular movement due to the simple organization. Here, we describe a protocol suitable for the analysis of Dendra2 movement between cells in P. patens.

Abstract: International audience; In bryophytes (i.e. mosses, liverworts and hornworts), extant representatives of early land plants, plasmodesmata have been described in a wide range of tissues. Although their contribution to bryophyte morphogenesis remains largely unexplored, several recent studies have suggested that the deposition of callose around plasmodesmata might regulate developmental and physiological responses in mosses. Here, we provide a protocol to image and quantify callose levels in the filamentous body of the model moss Physcomitrium (Physcomitrella) patens and discuss possible alternatives and pitfalls. More generally, this protocol establishes a framework to explore the distribution of callose in other bryophytes.

Abstract: This work presents the results of physical and biological investigations at 27 biogeochemical stations of early winter sea ice in the Ross Sea during the 2017 PIPERS cruise. Only two similar cruises occurred in the past, in 1995 and 1998. The year 2017 was a specific year, in that ice growth in the Central Ross Sea was considerably delayed, compared to previous years. These conditions resulted in lower ice thicknesses and Chl- a burdens, as compared to those observed during the previous cruises. It also resulted in a different structure of the sympagic algal community, unusually dominated by Phaeocystis rather than diatoms. Compared to autumn-winter sea ice in the Weddell Sea (AWECS cruise), the 2017 Ross Sea pack ice displayed similar thickness distribution, but much lower snow cover and therefore nearly no flooding conditions. It is shown that contrasted dynamics of autumnal-winter sea-ice growth between the Weddell Sea and the Ross Sea impacted the development of the sympagic community. Mean/median ice Chl- a concentrations were 3–5 times lower at PIPERS, and the community status there appeared to be more mature (decaying?), based on Phaeopigments/Chl- a ratios. Abstract: Flame spread over wire insulation plays a crucial role in spacecraft fire safety. To quantify the effect of the initial ignition condition on the limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) of spreading flame over wire insulation, opposed flow flame spread experiments with wire insulation were conducted in microgravity (parabolic flights). Both ignition power (32.7 W to 71.8 W) and heating time (5 s to 15 s) were varied for an external flow of 100 mm/s. The sample wires were made of polyethylene-coated nickel-chrome (NiCr) and Copper (Cu), respectively, both with inner core diameter of 0.50 mm and insulation thickness of 0.30 mm. A 0.50 mm diameter coiled Kanthal wire wrapped around the sample wire 6 times with 8 mm length was used as the igniter. The experimental results show that the LOC gradually decreases as the ignition power or heating time increases and eventually it reaches a constant value. Also, the effect of ignition condition on LOC was more pronounced for Cu wires than for NiCr wires. The variation range of LOC in the tested ignition condition in microgravity was larger than that of horizontal flame spread in normal gravity. This conclusion can have implication for future experiment in the International Space Station to avoid the wrong LOC value because of the insufficient initial ignition energy and will eventually lead to an improved fire safety in spacecrafts.

Abstract: The Green Edge initiative was developed to investigate the processes controlling the primary productivity and fate of organic matter produced during the Arctic phytoplankton spring bloom (PSB) and to determine its role in the ecosystem. Two field campaigns were conducted in 2015 and 2016 at an ice camp located on landfast sea ice southeast of Qikiqtarjuaq Island in Baffin Bay (67.4797∘ N, 63.7895∘ W). During both expeditions, a large suite of physical, chemical and biological variables was measured beneath a consolidated sea-ice cover from the surface to the bottom (at 360 m depth) to better understand the factors driving the PSB. Key variables, such as conservative temperature, absolute salinity, radiance, irradiance, nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll a concentration, bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance and taxonomy, and carbon stocks and fluxes were routinely measured at the ice camp. Meteorological and snow-relevant variables were also monitored. Here, we present the results of a joint effort to tidy and standardize the collected datasets, which will facilitate their reuse in other Arctic studies. Abstract: During the last years we have witnessed progressive evolution of preparation of acenes with length up to dodecacene by on-surface synthesis in ultra-high vacuum or generation of acenes up to decacene in solid matrices at low temperatures. While these protocols with very specific conditions produce the acenes in amount of few molecules, the strategies leading to the acenes in large quantities dawdle behind. Only recently and after 70 years of synthetic attempts, heptacene has been prepared in bulk phase. However, the preparative scale synthesis of higher homologues still remains a formidable challenge. Here we report the preparation and characterisation of nonacene and show its excellent thermal and in-time stability., Acenes, or linearly fused benzene rings, have both fundamental scientific interest and potential for electronic and material utility, but synthesis of acenes with more than six rings are difficult due to dimerization and degradation. Here the authors prepare nonacene and demonstrate that it is stable in inert conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Many stinkbugs in the superfamily Coreoidea (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) develop crypts in the posterior midgut, harboringCaballeronia (Burkholderia) symbionts. These symbionts form a monophyletic group in Burkholderia sensu lato, called the“stinkbug-associated beneficial and environmental (SBE)” group, recently reclassified as the new genus Caballeronia. SBEsymbionts are separated into the subclades SBE-α and SBE-β. Previous studies suggested a regional effect on the symbiontinfection pattern; Japanese and American bug species are more likely to be associated with SBE-α, while European bugspecies are almost exclusively associated with SBE-β. However, since only a few insect species have been investigated, itremains unclear whether region-specific infection is general. We herein investigated Caballeronia gut symbionts in diverseJapanese, European, and North American populations of a cosmopolitan species, the Western conifer seed bug Leptoglossusoccidentalis (Coreoidea: Coreidae). A molecular phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene demonstrated that SBE-βwas the most dominant in all populations. Notably, SBE-α was rarely detected in any region, while a third clade, the“Coreoidea clade” occupied one fourth of the tested populations. Although aposymbiotic bugs showed high mortality, SBEα- and SBE-β-inoculated insects both showed high survival rates; however, a competition assay demonstrated that SBE-βoutcompeted SBE-α in the midgut crypts of L. occidentalis. These results strongly suggest that symbiont specificity inthe Leptoglossus-Caballeronia symbiotic association is influenced by the host rather than geography, while the geographicdistribution of symbionts may be more important in other bugs.

Abstract: BackgroundResponse to lithium in patients with bipolar disorder is associated with clinical and transdiagnostic genetic factors. The predictive combination of these variables might help clinicians better predict which patients will respond to lithium treatment.AimsTo use a combination of transdiagnostic genetic and clinical factors to predict lithium response in patients with bipolar disorder.MethodThis study utilised genetic and clinical data (n = 1034) collected as part of the International Consortium on Lithium Genetics (ConLi+Gen) project. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) were computed for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder, and then combined with clinical variables using a cross-validated machine-learning regression approach. Unimodal, multimodal and genetically stratified models were trained and validated using ridge, elastic net and random forest regression on 692 patients with bipolar disorder from ten study sites using leave-site-out cross-validation. All models were then tested on an independent test set of 342 patients. The best performing models were then tested in a classification framework.ResultsThe best performing linear model explained 5.1% (P = 0.0001) of variance in lithium response and was composed of clinical variables, PRS variables and interaction terms between them. The best performing non-linear model used only clinical variables and explained 8.1% (P = 0.0001) of variance in lithium response. A priori genomic stratification improved non-linear model performance to 13.7% (P = 0.0001) and improved the binary classification of lithium response. This model stratified patients based on their meta-polygenic loadings for major depressive disorder and schizophrenia and was then trained using clinical data.ConclusionsUsing PRS to first stratify patients genetically and then train machine-learning models with clinical predictors led to large improvements in lithium response prediction. When used with other PRS and biological markers in the future this approach may help inform which patients are most likely to respond to lithium treatment.

Abstract: International audience; Fe/N/C single-atom catalysts containing Fe−N x sites prepared by pyrolysis are promising cathode materials for fuel cells and metal-air batteries due to their high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activities. We have developed iron complexes containing N2- or N3-chelating coordination structures with preorganized aromatic rings in a 1,12-diazatriphenylene framework tethering bromo substituents as precursors to precisely construct Fe−N 4 sites in an Fe/N/C catalyst. One-step pyrolysis of the iron complex with carbon black forms atomically dispersed Fe−N 4 sites without iron aggregates. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electrochemical measurements revealed that the iron complex with N3-coordination is more effectively converted to Fe−N 4 sites catalyzing ORR with a TOF value of 0.21 e∙site −1 ∙s −1 at 0.8 V vs RHE. This indicates that the formation of Fe−N 4 sites is controlled by precise tuning of the chemical structure of the iron complex precursor.

Abstract: C. Vastel et al., [Aims] Methanol is a ubiquitous species commonly found in the molecular interstellar medium. It is also a crucial seed species for the build-up of chemical complexity in star forming regions. Thus, understanding how its abundance evolves during the star formation process and whether it enriches the emerging planetary system is of paramount importance., [Methods] We used new data from the ALMA Large Program FAUST (Fifty AU STudy of the chemistry in the disc/envelope system of solar protostars) to study the methanol line emission towards the [BHB2007] 11 protobinary system (sources A and B), where a complex structure of filaments connecting the two sources with a larger circumbinary disc has previously been detected., [Results] Twelve methanol lines have been detected with upper energies in the [45–537] K range along with one 13CH3OH transition and one methyl formate (CH3OCHO) line blended with one of the methanol transitions. The methanol emission is compact (FWHM ~ 0.5″) and encompasses both protostars, which are separated by only 0.2″ (28 au). In addition, the overall methanol line emission presents three velocity components, which are not spatially resolved by our observations. Nonetheless, a detailed analysis of the spatial origin of these three components suggests that they are associated with three different spatial regions, with two of them close to 11B and the third one associated with 11A. A radiative transfer analysis of the methanol lines gives a kinetic temperature of [100–140] K, an H2 volume density of 106–107 cm−3 and column density of a few 1018 cm−2 in all three components with a source size of ~0.15″. Thus, this hot and dense gas is highly enriched in methanol with an abundance as high as 10−5. Using previous continuum data, we show that dust opacity can potentially completely absorb the methanol line emission from the two binary objects., [Conclusions] Although we cannot firmly exclude other possibilities, we suggest that the detected hot methanol is resulting from the shocked gas from the incoming filaments streaming towards [BHB2007] 11A and B, respectively. Abstract: Context. The current period is conducive to exploring our Solar System's origins with recent and future space sample return missions, which provide invaluable information from known Solar System asteroids and comets The Hayabusa2 mission of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) recently brought back samples from the surface of the Ryugu carbonaceous asteroid. Aims. We aim to identify the different forms of chemical composition of organic matter and minerals that constitute these Solar System primitive objects, to shed light on the Solar System's origins. Methods. In this work, we recorded infrared (IR) hyper-spectral maps of whole-rock Ryugu asteroid samples at the highest achievable spatial resolution with a synchrotron in the mid-IR (MIR). Additional global far-IR (FIR) spectra of each sample were also acquired. Results. The hyper-spectral maps reveal the variability of the functional groups at small scales and the intimate association of phyl-losilicates with the aliphatic components of the organic matter present in Ryugu. The relative proportion of column densities of the identified IR functional groups (aliphatics, hydroxyl + interlayer and/or physisorbed water, carbonyl, carbonates, and silicates) giving access to the composition of the Ryugu samples is estimated from these IR hyper-spectral maps. Phyllosilicate spectra reveal the presence of mixtures of serpentine and saponite. We do not detect anhydrous silicates in the samples analysed, at the scales probed. The carbonates are dominated by dolomite. Aliphatics organics are distributed over the whole samples at the micron scale probed with the synchrotron, and intimately mixed with the phyllosilicates. The aromatic C=C contribution could not be safely deconvolved from OH in most spectra, due to the ubiquitous presence of hydrated minerals. The peak intensity ratios of the organics methylene to methyl (CH2/CH3) of the Ryugu samples vary between about 1.5 and 2.5, and are compared to the ratios in chondrites from types 1 to 3. Overall, the mineralogical and organic characteristics of the Ryugu samples show similarities with those of CI chondrites, although with a noticeably higher CH2/CH3 in Ryugu than generally measured in C1 chondrites collected on Earth, and possibly a higher carbonate content.

Abstract: International audience; The high-performance defect-rich MoS2 dominated by sulfur vacancies as well as Mo-rich environments have been extensively studied in many fields, such as nitrogen reduction reactions, hydrogen evolution reactions, as well as sensing devices for NH3, which are attributed to the undercoordinated Mo atoms playing a significant role as catalytic sites in the defect area. In this study, the Mo cluster-MoS2 composite was creatively synthesized through a one-step sulfurization process via H2/H2S gas flow. The Mo6 cluster iodides (MIs) coated on the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrate via the electrophoretic deposition method (i.e., MI@FTO) were used as a precursor to form a thin-film nanocomposite. Investigations into the structure, reaction mechanism, and NH3 gas sensing performance were carried out in detail. The results indicated that during the gas flowing, the decomposed Mo6 cluster iodides played the role of template and precursor, forming complicated Mo cluster compounds and eventually producing MoS2. These Mo cluster-MoS2 thin-film nanocomposites were fabricated and applied as gas sensors for the first time. It turns out that after the sulfurization process, the response of MI@FTO for NH3 gas increased three times while showing conversion from p-type to n-type semiconductor, which enhances their possibilities for future device applications.

Abstract: Every year, billions of birds undertake extensive migrations between breeding and nonbreeding areas, facing challenges that require behavioural adjustments, particularly to flight timing and duration. Such adjustments in daily activity patterns and the influence of extrinsic factors (e.g., environmental conditions, moonlight) have received much more research attention in terrestrial than marine migrants. Taking advantage of the widespread deployment in recent decades of combined light-level geolocator-immersion loggers, we investigated diel organisation and influence of the moon on flight activities during the non-breeding season of 21 migrant seabird species from a wide taxonomic range (6 families, 3 orders). Migrant seabirds regularly stopped (to either feed or rest) migration, unlike some terrestrial and wetland birds which fly non-stop. We found an overall increase for most seabird species in time in flight and, for several species, also in flight bout duration, during migration compared to when resident at the non-breeding grounds. Additionally, several nocturnal species spent more of the day in flight during migration than at non-breeding areas, and vice versa for diurnal species. Nocturnal time in flight tended to increase during full moon, both during migration and at the nonbreeding grounds, depending on species. Abstract: Current evolutionary scenarios posit the emergence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from an environmental saprophyte through a cumulative process of genome adaptation. Mycobacterium riyadhense, a related bacillus, is being increasingly isolated from human clinical cases with tuberculosis-like symptoms in various parts of the world. To elucidate the evolutionary relationship between M. riyadhense and other mycobacterial species, including members of the M. tuberculosis complex (MTBC), eight clinical isolates of M. riyadhense were sequenced and analyzed. We show, among other features, that M. riyadhense shares a large number of conserved orthologs with M. tuberculosis and shows the expansion of toxin/antitoxin pairs, PE/PPE family proteins compared with other non-tuberculous mycobacteria. We observed M. riyadhense lacks wecE gene which may result in the absence of lipooligosaccharides (LOS) IV. Comparative transcriptomic analysis of infected macrophages reveals genes encoding inducers of Type I IFN responses, such as cytosolic DNA sensors, were relatively less expressed by macrophages infected with M. riyadhense or M. kansasii, compared to BCG or M. tuberculosis. Overall, our work sheds new light on the evolution of M. riyadhense, its relationship to the MTBC, and its potential as a system for the study of mycobacterial virulence and pathogenesis.

Abstract: Agricultural performance is influenced by environmental conditions, management decisions and economic circumstances. It is important to quantify their respective contribution to allow for detecting major hazards to production, projecting future yields under climate change and deriving adaptation options. For this purpose, time series of agricultural yields with high spatial and long-term temporal resolution are a primary requisite. Here we present a data set of crop performance in France, one of Europe’s major crop producers. The data set comprises ten crops (barley, maize, oats, potatoes, rapeseed, sugarbeet, sunflower, durum wheat, soft wheat and wine) and covers the years 1900 to 2018. It contains harvested area, production and yield data for all 96 French départements (i.e. counties or NUTS3 level) with a total number of 375,264 data points. Entries until 1988 have been digitized manually from statistical yearbooks. The technical validation indicates a high consistency of the data set within itself and with external resources. The data set may contribute to an enhanced understanding of the manifold influences on agricultural performance.

Abstract: International audience; Chondrites are rocky fragments of asteroids that formed at different times and heliocentric distances in the early solar system. Most chondrite groups contain water-bearing minerals, attesting that both water-ice and dust were accreted on their parent asteroids. Nonetheless, the hydrogen isotopic composition (D/H) of water in the different chondrite groups remains poorly constrained, due to the intimate mixture of hydrated minerals and organic compounds, the other main H-bearing phase in chondrites. Building on our recent works using in situ secondary ion mass spectrometry analyses, we determined the H isotopic composition of water in a large set of chondritic samples (CI, CM, CO, CR, CY, and C-ungrouped carbonaceous chondrites) and report that water in each group shows a distinct and unique D/H signature. Based on a comparison with literature data on bulk chondrites and their water and organics, our data do not support a preponderant role of parent-body processes in controlling the D/H variations among chondrites. Instead, we propose that the water and organic D/H signatures were mostly shaped by interactions between the protoplanetary disk and the molecular cloud that episodically fed the disk over several million years. Because the 2 preservation of D-rich interstellar water and/or organics in chondritic materials is only possible below their respective sublimation temperatures (160 and 350-450 K), the H isotopic signatures of chondritic materials depend on both the timing and location at which their parent body formed.

Abstract: Este artículo contiene 18 páginas, 5 tablas, 4 figuras., Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12- month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1– 3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8–10.6%, relative to current mass loss.In contrast, expected changes in atmospheric N deposition will decrease the mid-term mass loss of high-quality litter by 1.4–2.2% and that of low-quality litter by 0.9–1.5% in the temperate biome. Our results suggest that projected increases in N deposition may have the capacity to dampen the climate-driven increases in litter decomposition depending on the biome and decomposition stage of substrate., This work was performed within the TeaComposition initiative, carried out by 190 institutions worldwide. Abstract: International audience; The OKEANOS mission utilizing the Solar Power Sail is one of the candidates of the strategic middle-class space exploration to the outer Solar System lead by the JAXA. The mission is planning to be launched in 2030's, and rendezvous for spectral observations and landing for in-situ measurements of light isotopes and organic molecules to a D or P type Jupitar Trojan asteroid in 2040's. The flagship instrument on board is a high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) system together with suits of remote-sensing instruments. Through in-depth scientific observations, the OKEANOS mission will provide critical input to the key questions of (1) constraining planet formation/migration theories, and (2) inventory and distribution of volatiles in the Solar System. We have conducted experimental tests of a sample canister sealing by a metal seal knife-edge, sample canister-MULTUM test, gas chromatograph-MULTUM coupling test for organics, and H and N isotopic measurements in the atmospheric air. Current performances are (1) high mass resolution was 30,000 at m/z = 20, (2) sample canister system with a knife-edge metal seal kept 90 % of a released gas in 1 hour for Cu or Au gaskets with/without regolith, (3) error meets the required precision and accuracy for nitrogen isotopic measurement but for hydrogen. These experiment tests need to continue for our scientific proposes on the asteroids.

Abstract: International audience; Treatment of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is important in many industrial processes including oil refineries, natural and biogas processing, and coal gasification. The most mature technology for the selective capture of H2S is based on its absorption by chemical or physical solvents. However, only several compounds are currently used as physical (co)solvents in industry, and the search for new ones is an important task. The experimental screening of physical (co)solvents requires much time and many resources, while solubility modeling might enable one to reduce the number of solvents for the experimental evaluation. In this study, a workflow for the in silico discovery of new physical solvents for H2S absorption was suggested and experimentally validated. A data set composed of 99 H2S physical solvents was collected and predictive quantitative structure–property relationships for H2S solubility were built using a random forest algorithm and two types of molecular descriptors: ISIDA fragments and quantum-chemical descriptors. Virtual screening of industrially produced chemicals and their structural analogues enabled identification of the ones with predicted high solubility values. They can be suggested as starting points for further exploration of the H2S physical solvents chemical space. The predicted solubility value for one of the compounds found in virtual screening, 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone, was confirmed experimentally.

Abstract: International audience; This study aimed to quantify the impact of copepod grazing on the productivity of phytoplankton during an under sea-ice spring phytoplankton bloom (USPB) in western Baffin Bay. To quantify positive and/or negative impacts of copepod grazing on primary production and the interaction between copepod grazing and phytoplankton species, we sampled seawater and zooplankton under the landfast sea ice every 2–3 days between May 24 and July 10, 2016. Samples were analyzed for estimation of primary production, chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration, diatom abundance, and copepod fecal pellet (FP) production/grazing rate. Analyses of chl-a concentration, primary production, and FP production/grazing rate revealed clear temporal changes and a mismatch between primary production and copepod consumption. The FP production/grazing rate reached a maximum (9.4/31.2 mg C m–2 d–1) on June 16 before the USPB phase and suddenly decreased to 0.7/2.4 mg C m–2 d–1 on June 21, despite an increase in primary production to 74.0 mg C m–2 d–1. The copepod grazing rate (3.7 mg C m–2 d–1) was low relative to primary production (344.6 mg C m–2 d–1) during the USPB phase (after June 20). While our estimates illustrate that copepod grazing did not limit the maximum daily primary production during the USPB, the low grazing pressure (2% of primary production) may have been an additional contributor to the reduction in total primary productivity at the end of the USPB period due primarily to the low supply of regenerated nitrogen-containing nutrients to drive regenerated production.

Abstract: International audience; Microbubble generators are in wide demand in industry following the discovery of a number of new functions of microbubble mixtures. This paper deals with a Venturi tube microbubble generator in which air bubbles at the inlet are fragmented in the diverging part of the tube. In contrast with past studies, we here regulated the flow subsonic so that fragmentation occurred without the help of pressure shock waves. Counting the microbubbles in image processing, we found that a single bubble fragmented into 20–400 microbubbles depending on the Weber number. The power efficiency is found to range from 30 to 50 percent and insensitive to the liquid viscosity. The mechanism of subsonic fragmentation is elucidated adopting particle tracking velocimetry, in association with a theoretical description of the translational motion and the shape oscillation of the bubble. The key event was found to be the bubble’s rapid slipback in the diverging part of the Venturi tube due to a positive pressure gradient. This provides a function that prevents large bubbles from being released from the subsonic Venturi tube.

Abstract: The sub-ice platelet layer (SIPL) is a highly porous, isothermal, friable layer of ice crystals and saltwater, that can develop to several meters in thickness under consolidated sea ice near Antarctic ice shelves. While the SIPL has been comprehensively described, details of its physics are rather poorly understood. In this contribution we describe the halo-thermodynamic mechanisms driving the development and stability of the SIPL in mushy-layer sea ice model simulations, forced by thermal atmospheric and oceanic conditions in McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The novelty of these simulations is that they predict a realistic model analogue for the SIPL. Two aspects of the model are essential: (a) a large initial brine fraction is imposed on newly forming ice, and (b) brine rejection via advective desalination. The SIPL appears once conductive heat fluxes become insufficient to remove latent heat required to freeze the highly porous new ice. Favorable conditions for SIPL formation include cold air, supercooled waters, and consolidated ice and snow that are thick enough to provide sufficient thermal insulation. Thermohaline properties resulting from large liquid fractions stabilize the SIPL, in particular a low thermal diffusivity. Intense convection within the isothermal SIPL generates the SIPL-consolidated ice contrast without transporting heat. Using standard physical constants and free parameters, the model successfully predicts the SIPL and consolidated ice thicknesses at six locations. While most simulations were performed with 50 layers, an SIPL emerged with moderate accuracy in thickness for three layers proving a low-cost representation of the SIPL in large-scale climate models.

Abstract: The objective of this work is to quantify for the first time soot-related radiative heat transfer in opposed flow flame spread in microgravity. This article presents experimental results obtained in parabolic flight facilities. A flame is established over a solid cylindrical polyethylene coated metallic wire and spreads at a steady rate, in low velocity flow conditions allowed by the absence of buoyancy. Implementing the Broadband Modulated Absorption/Emission technique, the two-dimensional fields of soot volume fraction and temperature are obtained for the first time in flame spread configuration over an insulated wire in microgravity. The consistency of the results is assessed by comparing results from independent experimental runs. From these fields, radiative losses attributed to soot in the flame are computed at each location. This map of radiative losses together with the profile of the wire surface are then used as inputs to a novel experimental approach that enables the assessment of soot radiative heat feedback to the wire. Results are extracted from a specific case of a flame propagating over a polyethylene coated Nickel–Chrome wire at nominal pressure. The oxidizer, composed of 19% oxygen and 81% nitrogen in volume is blown at opposed flow parallel to the wire at a velocity of $$200\,\hbox {mm}\cdot\hbox{s}^{-1}$$. This new approach provides the first detailed quantitative measurements which are required to check the relevance of heat transfer models under development, therefore to better understand the mechanisms driving flame spread in microgravity.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we investigate inverse source problems for a wide range of PDEs of parabolic and hyperbolic types as well as time-fractional evolution equations by partial interior observation. Restricting the source terms to the form of separated variables, we establish uniqueness results for simultaneously determining both temporal and spatial components without non-vanishing assumptions at [Formula: see text], which seems novel to the best of our knowledge. Remarkably, mostly we allow a rather flexible choice of the observation time not necessarily starting from [Formula: see text], which fits into various situations in practice. Our main approach is based on the combination of the Titchmarsh convolution theorem with unique continuation properties and time-analyticity of the PDEs under consideration.

Abstract: Molecular identification is increasingly used to speed up biodiversity surveys and laboratory experiments. However, many groups of organisms cannot be reliably identified using standard databases such as GenBank or BOLD due to lack of sequenced voucher specimens identified by experts. Sometimes a large number of sequences are available, but with too many errors to allow identification. Here we address this problem for parasitoids of Drosophila by introducing a curated open-access molecular reference database, DROP (Drosophilaparasitoids). Identifying Drosophila parasitoids is challenging and poses a major impediment to realize the full potential of this model system in studies ranging from molecular mechanisms to food webs, and in biological control of Drosophila suzukii. In DROP (http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4519656), genetic data are linked to voucher specimens and, where possible, the voucher specimens are identified by taxonomists and vetted through direct comparison with primary type material. To initiate DROP, we curated 154 laboratory strains, 856 vouchers, 554 DNA sequences, 16 genomes, 14 transcriptomes, and 6 proteomes drawn from a total of 183 operational taxonomic units (OTUs): 114 described Drosophila parasitoid species and 69 provisional species. We found species richness of Drosophila parasitoids to be heavily underestimated and provide an updated taxonomic catalogue for the community. DROP offers accurate molecular identification and improves cross-referencing between individual studies that we hope will catalyze research on this diverse and fascinating model system. Our effort should also serve as an example for researchers facing similar molecular identification problems in other groups of organisms.

Abstract: For two differentiable maps between two manifolds of possibly different dimensions, the local and global coincidence homology classes are introduced and studied by Bisi- Bracci-Izawa-Suwa (2016) in the framework of Cech-de Rham cohomology. We take up the problem from the combinatorial viewpoint and give some finer results, in particular for the local classes. As to the global class, we clarify the relation with the cohomology coincidence class as studied by Biasi-Libardi-Monis (2015). In fact they introduced such a class in the context of several maps and we also consider this case. In particular we define the local homology class and give some explicit expressions. These all together lead to a generalization of the classical Lefschetz coincidence point formula., Comment: 18 pages
