Transactions between large foreign-owned domestic corporations and related foreign persons in 1993 reflect growing interest in direct foreign investment in the US. Data for the 1991-93 tax years show that the number of related foreign persons reported trended upward. It was up by 16%, 1992 vs 1991, and by 14%, 1993 vs 1992. The number of large foreign-owned domestic corporations reporting transactions with related foreign persons was up by 6%, 1992 vs 1991, and by 18%, 1993 vs 1992. Sales and purchases of stock in trade made up most of the total received from and payments made to the 7,662 related foreign persons.

Foreign sales corporations (FSCs) are created to facilitate export of products and services by the 'parent' corporation, and they filed 3,073 tax returns in 1992. Most FSC returns concerned exporting manufactured products, which included machinery, chemicals, electrical machinery, and transportation equipment. Of the 'total income' generated by FSCs, $0.8 bil was subject to US taxes.

Interest-Charge Domestic International Sales Corporations (IC-DISC) reported export gross receipts totalling $3.5 billion in 1991, a decline from $3.6 billion in 1987, the last year for which data is available. Over half of the IC-DISC returns filed were non-S corporations, while 42.4% were individual partnerships, trusts, estates or S corporations. A total of 980 returns were filed fro 1991, compared to 1,185 in 1987.
