We consider the interfacial growth morphologies of crystals growing in contact in crystal mushes, with a specific application to those formed by the solidification of basaltic magma. We focus on the particular case of an augite (pyroxene) crystal growing between two plagioclase crystals. The augite is treated as an equant unfaceted crystal, whereas the plagioclase is faceted, and our treatment applies generally to such combinations. The resulting three-grain junctions in natural rock samples are commonly of two distinct types. In one, the two augite–plagioclase interfaces grow towards each other with opposite curvatures, whereas in the second the curvatures of the interfaces have the same sign, giving a distinctive morphology which we have called an eagle's beak. Crystal clusters are common in both extrusive and plutonic rocks, but the mechanisms by which they form are not well-constrained. Following a consideration of the physics of nucleation, we outline the expected microstructural characteristics of clusters formed by heterogeneous nucleation and those formed by synneusis, together with the ways they might evolve during subsequent grain growth and textural equilibration. By combining analysis of the microstructures in experimental chromite-basalt charges with a detailed microstructural analysis of the UG2 chromitite of the Bushveld layered intrusion using EBSD, we argue that the UG2 chromitite formed by settling and accumulation of single grains and clusters comprising randomly oriented grains produced by the aggregation of previously isolated chromite crystals. Although there is no evidence of epitaxy, at least some of the lowermost chromite grains of the main UG2 chromitite may have nucleated heterogeneously on the silicate grains forming the floor, with subsequent accumulation and sintering of individual grains or clusters. The reduced thickness of chromitites on the steep and overhanging parts of the floor is thus due to the relative difficulty of sticking more grains to the existing layer in these orientations. The absence of any fining-upwards of grains in either the main UG2 chromitite or the associated stringer can be accounted for if both layers were formed by the settling and accumulation of clusters as well as single grains. Comparison with examples of clustered chromite grains in extrusive rocks suggests that aggregation by synneusis is a widespread magmatic process. The 'chicken-wire' texture formed by clustered chromite grains commonly found in olivine-rich cumulates is argued to also be formed by gravitational settling, with the possible exception of clusters of chromite grains in relatively thin seams argued to be the result of metasomatism, which may instead have formed by impingement during in situ growth. The Eastern Layered Intrusion of the Rum Central Complex, NW Scotland, comprises 16 macro-units broadly defined by a basal peridotite body overlain by gabbros and troctolites. The local term for the upper plagioclase-bearing cumulates is 'allivalite'. The Unit 12 allivalite contains five subsidiary peridotite horizons, each continuous on the kilometre scale. Field, textural and geochemical evidence points to the Unit 12 allivalite forming by progressive accumulation of crystals from up to seven separate magma batches, varying from picrite to basalt. The thickness of the magma lens in the sill-like chamber was as low as 30 m during a significant part of the development of the Unit 12 allivalite, and evidence supports one eruption from the chamber during its accumulation. The Rum Igneous Centre comprises two early marginal felsic complexes (the Northern Marginal Zone and the Southern Mountains Zone), along with the later central ultrabasic--basic layered intrusions. These marginal complexes represent the remnants of near-surface to eruptive felsic magmatism associated with caldera collapse, examples of which are rare in the North Atlantic Igneous Province. Rock units include intra-caldera collapse breccias, rhyolitic ignimbrite deposits and shallow-level felsic intrusions, as well the enigmatic 'Am Mam intrusion breccia'. The latter comprises a dacitic matrix enclosing lobate basaltic inclusions (~ 1-15 cm) and a variety of clasts, ranging from millimetres to tens of metres in diameter. These clasts comprise Lewisian gneiss, Torridonian sandstone and coarse gabbro. Detailed re-mapping of the Am Mam intrusion breccia has shown its timing of emplacement as syn-caldera, rather than pre-caldera as previously thought. Textural analysis of entrained clasts and adjacent, uplifted country rocks has revealed their thermal metamorphism by early mafic intrusions at greater depth than their present structural position. These findings provide a window into the evolution of the early mafic magmas responsible for driving felsic magmatism on Rum. Our data help constrain some of the physical parameters of this early magma-crust interaction and place it within the geochemical evolution of the Rum Centre. The stratigraphic variation of plagioclase grain shape in the marginal regions of tabular bodies of magma provides a record of the balance of heat loss into the surroundings and heat brought into the body by magma flow during inflation and propagation. This record has the potential to constrain the amount of magma flow past any point in a sill, enabling mapping the construction of any extensive sill network. The variation of plagioclase grain shape in lava lakes may preserve a detailed history of lake filling, whereas the history of inflation of a thick ponded flood basalt flow is likely to be lost by melt-back of any early formed chill during prolonged flow at the base. Convection sufficiently vigorous to entrain crystals from the marginal solidification fronts is recorded by stratigraphic invariance of plagioclase grain shape and is not generally found in sills: instead, plagioclase grain shape varies with stratigraphic height, attesting to a predominance of in situ plagioclase nucleation and growth at the intrusion margins. While the stratigraphic variation of plagioclase grain shape in sills thinner than ~100 m is symmetrical, that in thicker sills varies in an asymmetric way with stratigraphic height, suggestive of a slower rate of inwards propagation of the roof solidification front compared to the floor, most likely indicative of moderately vigorous convection. Sills are generally finer grained than dykes of the same thickness, regardless of whether the spatial variation of plagioclase shape is consistent with convection during solidification: this is likely to be a consequence of a greater extent of Ostwald ripening of suspended grains during long-lived convection in vertically extensive dykes. Detailed microstructural analysis of three basaltic sills of the Little Minch Sill Complex demonstrates that convection leaves a detectable signature in fully solidified bodies. The presence of dense clusters of equant grains of olivine and clinopyroxene in the central parts of sills can only be accounted for if they formed and were enlarged while suspended in convecting magma, with delayed settling to the sill floor. An associated stratigraphic invariance of plagioclase grain shape is consistent with growth while suspended in convecting magma. These microstructural indicators demonstrate that convection during solidification was vigorous and long-lived in the 135-m-thick picrodolerite-crinanite unit (PCU) of the composite Shiant Isles Main sill and vigorous and likely short-lived in the PCU of the composite Creagan Iar sill. In contrast, convection in the Meall Tuath sill was weak and short-lived: plagioclase grain shape in this sill varies with stratigraphic height, indicative of primarily in situ nucleation and growth at the magma-mush interface, while olivine and clinopyroxene were kept suspended in the overlying convecting magma. The magma in all three sills fractionated during solidification, permitting convection driven by the instability of an upper thermal boundary layer. The comparative vigour and longevity of convection in the Shiant Isles Main sill and the Creagan Iar sill was due to their emplacement above an earlier, still-hot, intrusion, resulting in highly asymmetric cooling. The thickness of the crystal mush on magma chamber floors can be constrained using the offset between the step-change in the median value of dihedral angles formed at the junctions between two grains of plagioclase and a grain of another phase (typically clinopyroxene, but also orthopyroxene and olivine) and the first appearance or disappearance of the liquidus phase associated with the step-change in median dihedral angle. We determined the mush thickness in the Rustenburg Layered Suite of the Bushveld Complex at clinopyroxene-in (in Lower Main Zone) and magnetite-in (in Upper Zone). We also examined an intermittent appearance of cumulus apatite in Upper Zone, using both the appearance and disappearance of cumulus apatite. In all cases, the mush thickness does not exceed 4 m. These values are consistent with field observations of a mechanically rigid mush at the bases of both magnetitite and chromitite layers overlying anorthosite. Mush thickness of the order of a few metres suggests that neither gravitationally-driven compaction nor compositional convection within the mush layer is likely to have been important processes during solidification: adcumulates in the Bushveld are most likely to have formed at the top of the mush during primary crystallisation. The Skaergaard Intrusion of East Greenland solidified as a closed system, with the development of progressively more fractionated material at the roof, floor and vertical walls of the magma chamber. We argue, using field observations of the exposed western margin together with detailed microstructural and geochemical analysis, that the mush on the vertical walls of the Skaergaard Intrusion reached a maximum thickness of ~180 m, and was highly unstable. Material was lost both continuously, due to non-retention of poorly consolidated material, and during episodic collapse events. The almost complete absence in the wall rocks of material formed in LZc times (following the saturation of the bulk magma in Fe-Ti oxides) was likely to have been caused by a collapse event, perhaps related to faulting of the actively extending Greenlandic margin. A second major collapse of the MBS occurred during the later stages of solidification, with the greatest loss of material occurring in a region of the wall with an unusually thick mush, creating a transient and localised increase in the thickness of the floor mush. This work demonstrates the importance of vertical walls in supplying loose, disaggregated material to form mobile magmatic slurries that may contribute to floor cumulates or be entrained and erupted in long-lived systems. A study of the impacts of feldspar on dihedral angles in the quartz-H2O-CO2 system at four kbar and between 450 and 1,050 degrees centigrade reveals dihedral angles in feldspar-bearing quartz quantities as similar to those in pure quartz quantities below 500 degrees centigrade, above which temperature and dihedral angles are inversely proportional. The temperature-induced change of quartz-albite-H2O from nonconnected to connected permeability is a probable regulator of porosity of high-grade rocks to aqueous liquids.
