Abstract

Introdução: as lesões por pressão são uma preocupação global de saúde, aumentando custos e riscos de infecções, complicando a recuperação e demandando recursos significativos. O uso de tecnologias como fotobiomodulação e fotodinâmica, aliadas ao conhecimento especializado dos profissionais, pode acelerar a resolução dessas lesões, representando abordagens terapêuticas mais eficazes. Resultados: observou-se melhorias notáveis nos seis participantes com lesões por pressão que apresentaram melhorias tanto qualitativas, relacionadas ao leito e bordas, quanto quantitativas, com redução da dimensão das feridas. Conclusão: a implementação de fotobiomodulação e/ou fotodinâmica como terapias adjuvantes no tratamento de lesões por pressão teve um impacto positivo, manifestando melhorias notáveis em aspectos qualitativos e quantitativos. A marcante redução no tamanho da ferida sugere benefícios significativos dessas abordagens, destacando sua valiosa contribuição para o processo de cicatrização. Além disso, a introdução de tecnologias, como as abordadas, desempenhou um papel crucial no tratamento de LP, ampliando as opções terapêuticas para os profissionais envolvidos na presente pesquisa.

Abstract

We present Follow-Up Network for Gamma-Ray Bursts (FUN GRB) Collaboration observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 021211 made between 143 seconds and 102 days after the burst. Our unique data set includes the earliest filtered detections and color information for an afterglow in the pre-Swift era. We find that the afterglow is best described by (1) propagation through a wind-swept medium, (2) a cooling break that is blueward of the observed optical frequencies, and (3) a hard electron energy distribution. However, superimposed on this "standard model" behavior we find significant chromatic variations within the first few hours after the burst. We consider possible reasons for these variations, including the possibility that they are due to a dust echo. Finally, we constrain physical parameters that describe the afterglow and surrounding medium for a variety of scenarios and find that GRB 021211's afterglow is faint for a combination of 3-4 reasons: (1) a low fraction of energy in relativistic electrons, (2) a low density for the wind-swept medium, implying either a low mass-loss rate and/or a high wind velocity for the progenitor, (3) a wide opening/viewing angle for the jet, and possibly (4) moderate source frame extinction. The jet appears to be significantly far from equipartition and magnetically dominated. Abstract

Abstract:We describe the process leading to the creation of the Cooperative of Reforestation Workers of Far Southern Bahia (COOPLANTAR), a cooperative that specializes in restoration of the Atlantic Forest in the Monte Pascoal–Pau Brasil Ecological Corridor in southern Bahia, Brazil, and provides job and income for members of local impoverished communities. We discuss the achievements of the cooperative, difficulties it has faced, and its prospects for future sustainability and expansion.

14. Cauchy–Characteristic Evolution and Waveforms

Abstract

We investigate a new methodology for the computation of waves generated by isolated sources. This approach consists of a global spacetime evolution algorithm based on a Cauchy initial-value formulation in a bounded interior region and based on characteristic hypersurfaces in the exterior; we match the two schemes at their common interface. The characteristic formulation allows accurate description of radiative infinity in a compactified finite coordinate interval, so that our numerical solution extends to infinity and accurately models the free-space problem. The matching interface need not be situated far from the sources, the wavefronts may have arbitrary nonspherical geometry, and strong nonlinearity may be present in both the interior and the exterior regions. Stability and second-order convergence of the algorithms (to the exact solution of the infinite-domain problem) are established numerically in three space dimensions. The matching algorithm is compared with examples of both local and nonlocal radiation boundary conditions proposed in the literature. For linear problems, matching outperformed the local radiation conditions chosen for testing, and was about as accurate (for the same grid resolution) as the exact nonlocal conditions. However, since the computational cost of the nonlocal conditions is many times that of matching, this algorithm may be used with higher grid resolutions, yielding a significantly higher final accuracy. For strongly nonlinear problems, matching was significantly more accurate than all other methods tested. This seems to be due to the fact that currently available local and nonlocal conditions are based on linearizing the governing equations in the far field, while matching consistently takes nonlinearity into account in both interior and exterior regions.
