The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is revolutionizing our understanding of the Universe by unveiling faint, near-infrared dropouts previously beyond our reach, ranging from exceptionally dusty sources to galaxies up to redshift $z \sim 14$. In this paper, we identify F200W-dropout objects in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey which are absent from existing catalogs. Our selection method can effectively identify obscured low-mass ($\log \text{M}_* \leq 9$) objects at $z \leq 6$, massive dust-rich sources up to $z \sim 12$, and ultra-high-redshift ($z > 15$) candidates. Primarily relying on NIRCam photometry from the latest CEERS data release and supplementing with Mid-Infrared/(sub-)mm data when available, our analysis pipeline combines multiple SED-fitting codes, star formation histories, and CosMix - a novel tool for astronomical stacking. Our work highlights three $215$, with best-fit masses compatible with $\Lambda$CDM and a standard baryons-to-star conversion efficiency. Their bi-modal redshift probability distributions suggest they could also be $z<1.5$ dwarf galaxies with extreme dust extinction. We also identify a strong line emitter galaxy at $z \sim 5$ mimicking the near-infrared emission of a $z \sim 13$ galaxy. Our sample holds promising candidates for future follow-ups. Confirming ultra high-redshift galaxies or lower-z dusty dwarfs will offer valuable insights into early galaxy formation, evolution with their central black holes and the nature of dark matter, and/or cosmic dust production mechanisms in low-mass galaxies, and will help us to understand degeneracies and contamination in high-z object searches., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

Galaxy morphology in stellar light can be described by a series of "non-parametric" or "morphometric" parameters, such as concentration-asymmetry-smoothness, Gini, $M_{20}$, and Sersic fit. These parameters can be applied to column density maps of atomic hydrogen (HI). The HI distribution is susceptible to perturbations by environmental effects, e.g. inter-galactic medium pressure and tidal interactions. Therefore, HI morphology can potentially identify galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping or tidal interactions. We explore three fields in the WALLABY Pilot HI survey and identify perturbed galaxies based on a k-nearest Neighbor (kNN) algorithm using an HI morphometric feature space. For training, we used labeled galaxies in the combined NGC 4808 and NGC 4636 fields with six HI morphometrics to train and test a kNN classifier. The kNN classification is proficient in classifying perturbed galaxies with all metrics -- accuracy, precision and recall -- at 70-80%. By using the kNN method to identify perturbed galaxies in the deployment field, the NGC 5044 mosaic, we find that in most regards, the scaling relations of perturbed and unperturbed galaxies have similar distribution in the scaling relations of stellar mass vs star formation rate and the Baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, but the HI and stellar mass relation flatter than of the unperturbed galaxies. Compact, star-forming galaxies with high star formation rate surface densities ($\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$) are often efficient Lyman continuum (LyC) emitters at $z\leq 4.5$, likely as intense stellar feedback creates low-density channels that allow photons to escape. Irregular or disturbed morphologies, such as those resulting from mergers, can also facilitate LyC escape by creating anisotropic gas distributions. We investigate the influence of galaxy morphology on LyC production and escape at redshifts $5 \leq z \leq 7$ using observations from various \textit{James Webb Space Telescope} (JWST) surveys. Our sample consists of 436 sources, which are predominantly low-mass ($\sim 10^{8.15} M_\odot$), star-forming galaxies with ionizing photon efficiency ($\xi_{\rm ion}$) values consistent with canonical expectations. Since direct measurements of $f_{\rm esc}$ are not possible during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), we predict $f_{\rm esc}$ for high-redshift galaxies by applying survival analysis to a subsample of LyC emitters from the Low-Redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS), selected to be direct analogs of reionization-era galaxies. We find that these galaxies exhibit on average modest predicted escape fractions ($\sim 0.04$). Additionally, we assess the correlation between morphological features and LyC emission. Our findings indicate that neither $\xi_{\rm ion}$ nor the predicted $f_{\rm esc}$ values show a significant correlation with the presence of merger signatures. This suggests that in low-mass galaxies at $z \geq 5$, strong morphological disturbances are not the primary mechanism driving LyC emission and leakage. The observed star formation rates of galaxies in the Local Universe suggests that they are replenishing their gas reservoir across cosmic time. Cosmological simulations predict that this accretion of fresh gas can occur in a hot or a cold mode, yet the existence of low column density ($\sim10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$) neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) tracing the cold mode has not been unambiguously confirmed by observations. We present the application of unconstrained spectral stacking to attempt to detect the emission from this HI in the Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) and Inter-Galactic Medium (IGM) of 6 nearby star forming galaxies from the MHONGOOSE sample for which full-depth observations are available. Our stacking procedure consists of a standard spectral stacking algorithm coupled with a one-dimensional spectral line finder designed to extract reliable signal close to the noise level. In agreement with previous studies, we found that the amount of signal detected outside the HI disk is much smaller than implied by simulations. Furthermore, the column density limit that we achieve via stacking ($\sim10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$) suggests that direct detection of the neutral CGM/IGM component might be challenging in the future, even with the next generation of radio telescopes., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the first spectroscopic confirmation of a dust-obscured dwarf galaxy, CEERS-14821. The analysis is performed combining JWST NIRCam broad-band photometry and NIRSpec/PRISM spectroscopic data. From the detection of multiple rest-frame optical lines, we derive that CEERS-14821 is located at $z=4.883\pm0.003$. Moreover, from a secure detection of the $H_{\alpha}$ and $H_{\beta}$ we derived that the galaxy has a dust extinction ranging from Av=2.2 to Av=3.3, depending on the assumed reddening law. This value is extremely large given that we estimated a low stellar mass around log(M/Mo)=8.0-8.2. Moreover, using different metallicity tracers, we verify that the galaxy is also metal-rich, with 12+log(O/H)>8.3. This is well above the expectation from both the mass-metallicity relation and the fundamental mass-metalliticy relation. CEERS-14821 is going through a burst of star formation, there are no indications of a strong contribution from an active galactic nuclei (f(AGN)<0.5 with respect to the total dust luminosity). Based on the rest-frame optical images, this source has a size compatible with galaxies of similar stellar mass and redshift. We present the discovery of a low-mass gas-rich low-surface brightness galaxy in the Dorado Group, at a distance of 17.7 Mpc. Combining deep MeerKAT 21-cm observations from the MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters (MHONGOOSE) survey with deep photometric images from the VST Early-type Galaxy Survey (VEGAS) we find a stellar and neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas mass of $M_\star = 2.23\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ and $M_{\rm HI}=1.68\times10^6$ M$_\odot$, respectively. This low-surface brightness galaxy is the lowest mass HI detection found in a group beyond the Local Universe ($D\gtrsim 10$ Mpc). The dwarf galaxy has the typical overall properties of gas-rich low surface brightness galaxies in the Local group, but with some striking differences. Namely, the MHONGOOSE observations reveal a very low column density ($\sim 10^{18-19}$ cm$^{-2}$) HI disk with asymmetrical morphology possibly supported by rotation and higher velocity dispersion in the centre. There, deep optical photometry and UV-observations suggest a recent enhancement of the star formation. Found at galactocentric distances where in the Local Group dwarf galaxies are depleted of cold gas (at $390$ projected-kpc distance from the group centre), this galaxy is likely on its first orbit within the Dorado group. We discuss the possible environmental effects that may have caused the formation of the HI disk and the enhancement of star formation, highlighting the short-lived phase (a few hundreds of Myr) of the gaseous disk, before either SF or hydrodynamical forces will deplete the gas of the galaxy., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

The ultraviolet continuum traces young stars while the near-infrared unveils older stellar populations and dust-obscured regions. Balmer emission lines provide insights on gas properties and young stellar objects but are highly affected by dust attenuation. The near-infrared Paschen lines suffer less dust attenuation and can be used to measure star formation rates (SFRs) in star-forming regions obscured by dust clouds. We select 13 sources between redshifts 1 and 3 observed with HST, JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec based on the availability of at least one Balmer and one Paschen line with S/N > 5. With a newly-developed version of CIGALE, we fit their hydrogen line equivalent widths (EWs) and photometric data. We assess the impacts of the removal of spectroscopic data by comparing the quality of the fits of the spectro-photometric data to those with photometric data only. We compare the single (BC03) vs binary (BPASS) stellar populations models in the fitting process of spectro-photometric data. We derive the differential attenuation and explore different attenuation recipes by fitting spectro-photometric data with BC03. For each stellar model and for each input dataset (with and without EWs), we quantify the deviation on the SFRs and stellar masses from the "standard" choice. On average, the SFRs are overestimated and the stellar masses are underestimated when EWs are not included as input data. We find a major contribution of the H${\alpha}$ emission line to the broadband photometric measurements of our sources, and a trend of increasing contribution with specific SFR. Using the BPASS models has a significant impact on the derived SFRs and stellar masses. We show that a flexible attenuation recipe provides more accurate estimates of the dust attenuation parameters, especially the differential attenuation which agrees with the original value of Charlot & Fall (2000)., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 19 pages, 15 figures

The MHONGOOSE (MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters) survey maps the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in and around 30 nearby star-forming spiral and dwarf galaxies to extremely low HI column densities. The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 16 km/s) ranges from ~ 5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at 90'' resolution to ~4 x 10^{19} cm^{-2} at the highest resolution of 7''. The HI mass sensitivity (3 sigma over 50 km/s) is ~5.5 X 10^5 M_sun at a distance of 10 Mpc (the median distance of the sample galaxies). The velocity resolution of the data is 1.4 km/s. One of the main science goals of the survey is the detection of cold, accreting gas in the outskirts of the sample galaxies. The sample was selected to cover a range in HI masses, from 10^7 M_sun to almost 10^{11} M_sun, to optimally sample possible accretion scenarios and environments. The distance to the sample galaxies ranges from 3 to 23 Mpc. In this paper, we present the sample selection, survey design, and observation and reduction procedures. We compare the integrated HI fluxes based on the MeerKAT data with those derived from single-dish measurement and find good agreement, indicating that our MeerKAT observations are recovering all flux. We present HI moment maps of the entire sample based on the first ten percent of the survey data, and find that a comparison of the zeroth- and second-moment values shows a clear separation between the physical properties of the HI in areas with star formation and areas without, related to the formation of a cold neutral medium. Finally, we give an overview of the HI-detected companion and satellite galaxies in the 30 fields, five of which have not previously been catalogued. The galaxy integrated star-formation rate (SFR) surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) has been proposed as a valuable diagnostic of the mass accumulation in galaxies as being more tightly related to the physics of star-formation (SF) and stellar feedback than other SF indicators. In this paper, we assemble a statistical sample of 230 galaxies observed with JWST in the GLASS and CEERS spectroscopic surveys to estimate Balmer line based dust attenuations and SFRs, and UV rest-frame effective radii. We study the evolution of galaxy SFR and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ in the first 1.5 Billion years of our Universe, finding that $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ is mildly increasing with redshift with a linear slope of $0.16 \pm 0.06$. We also explore the dependence of SFR and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ on stellar mass, showing that a SF 'Main-Sequence' and a $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ `Main-Sequence' are in place out to z=10, with a similar slope compared to the same relations at lower redshifts. We find that the specific SFR (sSFR) and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ are correlated with the [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 ratio and with indirect estimates of the escape fraction of Lyman continuum photons, hence they likely play an important role in the evolution of ionization conditions and in the escape of ionizing radiation. We also search for spectral outflow signatures in a subset of galaxies observed at high resolution, finding an outflow incidence of $2/11$ ($=20\%^{32\%}_{9\%}$) at $z<6$, but no evidence at $z>6$ ($<26\%$). Finally, we find a positive correlation between A$_V$ and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, and a flat trend as a function of sSFR, indicating that there is no evidence of a drop of A$_V$ in extremely star-forming galaxies between z=4 and 10. The existing reservoirs of neutral atomic hydrogen gas (H$\,$I) in galaxies are insufficient to have maintained the observed levels of star formation without some kind of replenishment. {This refuelling of the H$\,$I reservoirs} is likely to occur at column densities an order of magnitude lower than previous observational limits (N$_{\rm{H\,I}\, limit} \sim 10^{19}\,$cm$^{-2}$ at 30$''$ resolution over a linewidth of $20\,$km/s). In this paper, we present recent deep H$\,$I observations of NGC 5068, a nearby isolated star-forming galaxy observed by MeerKAT as part of the MHONGOOSE survey. With these new data, we are able to detect low column density H$\,$I around NGC 5068 with a $3\sigma$ detection limit of N$_{\rm{H\,I}} = 6.4 \times 10^{17}\,$cm$^{-2}$ at 90$''$ resolution over a $20\,$km/s linewidth. The high sensitivity and resolution of the MeerKAT data reveal a complex morphology of the H$\,$I in this galaxy -- a regularly rotating inner disk coincident with the main star-forming disk of the galaxy, a warped outer disk of low column density gas (N$_{\rm{H\,I}} < 9 \times 10^{19}\,$cm$^{-2}$), in addition to clumps of gas on the north west side of the galaxy. We employ a simple two disk model that describe the inner and outer disks, and are able to identify anomalous gas that deviates from the rotation of the main galaxy. The morphology and the kinematics of the anomalous gas suggest a possible extra-galactic origin. We explore a number of possible origin scenarios that may explain the anomalous gas, and conclude that fresh accretion is the most likely scenario., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. Groups of galaxies are the intermediate density environment in which much of the evolution of galaxies is thought to take place. In spectroscopic redshift surveys, one can identify these as close spatial redshift associations. However, spectroscopic surveys will always be more limited in luminosity and completeness than imaging ones. Here we combine the Galaxy And Mass Assembly group catalogue with the extended Satellites Around Galactic Analogues (xSAGA) catalogue of Machine Learning identified low-redshift satellite galaxies. We find 1825 xSAGA galaxies within the bounds of the GAMA equatorial fields (m < 21), 1562 of which could have a counterpart in the GAMA spectroscopic catalogue (m < 19.8). Of these, 1326 do have a GAMA counterpart with 974 below z=0.03 (true positives) and 352 above (false positives). By crosscorrelating the GAMA group catalogue with the xSAGA catalogue, we can extend and characterize the satellite content of GAMA galaxy groups. We find that most groups have <5 xSAGA galaxies associated with them but richer groups may have more. Each additional xSAGA galaxy contributes only a small fraction of the group's total stellar mass (<<10%). Selecting GAMA groups that resemble the Milky Way halo, with a few (<4) bright galaxies, we find xSAGA can add a magnitude fainter sources to a group and that the Local Group does not stand out in the number of bright satellites. We report on the discovery of two potential polar ring galaxies (PRGs) in the WALLABY Pilot Data Release 1 (PDR1). These untargetted detections, cross-matched to NGC 4632 and NGC 6156, are some of the first galaxies where the Hi observations show two distinct components. We used the iDaVIE virtual reality software to separate the anomalous gas from the galactic gas and find that the anomalous gas comprises ~ 50% of the total H i content of both systems. We have generated plausible 3D kinematic models for each galaxy assuming that the rings are circular and inclined at 90 degrees to the galaxy bodies. These models show that the data are consistent with PRGs, but do not definitively prove that the galaxies are PRGs. By projecting these models at different combinations of main disk inclinations, ring orientations, and angular resolutions in mock datacubes, we have further investigated the detectability of similar PRGs in WALLABY. Assuming that these galaxies are indeed PRGs, the detectability fraction, combined with the size distribution of WALLABY PDR1 galaxies, implies an incidence rate of ~ 1% - 3%. Low mass (sub)stellar objects represent the low end of the initial mass function, the transition to free-floating planets and a prominent interloper population in the search for high-redshift galaxies. Without proper motions or spectroscopy, can one identify these objects photometrically? JWST/NIRCam has several advantages over HST/WFC3 NIR: more filters, a greater wavelength range, and greater spatial resolution. Here, we present a catalogue of (sub)stellar dwarfs identified in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS). We identify 518 stellar objects down to $m_F200W \sim 28$ using half-light radius, a full three magnitudes deeper than typical HST/WFC3 images. A kNN nearest neighbour algorithm identifies and types these sources, using four HST/WFC3 and four NIRCam filters, trained on SpeX spectra of nearby brown dwarfs. The kNN with four neighbors classifies well within two subtypes: e.g M2$\pm$2 or T4$\pm$2, achieving $\sim$95% precision and recall. More granular typing results in worse metrics. In CEERS, we find 9 M8$\pm$2, 2 L6$\pm$2, 1 T4$\pm$2, and 15 T8$\pm$2. We compare the observed long wavelength NIRCam colours -- not used in the kNN -- to those expected for brown dwarf atmospheric models. The NIRCam F356W-F444W and F410M-F444W colours are redder by a magnitude for the type assigned by the kNN, hinting at a wider variety of atmospheres for these objects. We find a 300-350pc scale-height for M6$\pm$2 dwarfs plus a second structural component and a 150-200pc scale-height for T6$\pm$2 type dwarfs, consistent with literature values., Comment: 18 pages, 24 figures, 3 tables, submitted to MNRAS

The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) began when galaxies grew in abundance and luminosity, so their escaping Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation started ionizing the surrounding neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Despite significant recent progress, the nature and role of cosmic reionizers are still unclear: in order to define them, it would be necessary to directly measure their LyC escape fraction ($f_{esc}$). However, this is impossible during the EoR due to the opacity of the IGM. Consequently, many efforts at low and intermediate redshift have been made to determine measurable indirect indicators in high-redshift galaxies so that their $f_{esc}$ can be predicted. This work presents the analysis of the indirect indicators of 62 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies at $6 \leq z \leq 9$ from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey, combined with 12 sources with public data from other JWST-ERS campaigns. We investigate the diversity in the sizes and average surface densities of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas discs in ~280 nearby galaxies detected by the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). We combine the uniformly observed, interferometric HI data from pilot observations of the Hydra cluster and NGC 4636 group fields with photometry measured from ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared imaging surveys to investigate the interplay between stellar structure, star formation and HI structural parameters. We quantify the HI structure by the size of the HI relative to the optical disc and the average HI surface density measured using effective and isodensity radii. For galaxies resolved by >1.3 beams, we find that galaxies with higher stellar masses and stellar surface densities tend to have less extended HI discs and lower HI surface densities: the isodensity HI structural parameters show a weak negative dependence on stellar mass and stellar mass surface density. These trends strengthen when we limit our sample to galaxies resolved by >2 beams. We find that galaxies with higher HI surface densities and more extended HI discs tend to be more star forming: the isodensity HI structural parameters have stronger correlations with star formation. Normalising the HI disc size by the optical effective radius (instead of the isophotal radius) produces positive correlations with stellar masses and stellar surface densities and removes the correlations with star formation. This is due to the effective and isodensity HI radii increasing with mass at similar rates while, in the optical, the effective radius increases slower than the isophotal radius. Our results demonstrate that with WALLABY we can begin to bridge the gap between small galaxy samples with high spatial resolution HI data and large, statistical studies using spatially unresolved, single-dish data., Comment: 16 page, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PASA

We report on the commensal ASKAP detection of a fast radio burst (FRB), FRB20211127I, and the detection of neutral hydrogen (HI) emission in the FRB host galaxy, WALLABYJ131913-185018 (hereafter W13-18). This collaboration between the CRAFT and WALLABY survey teams marks the fifth, and most distant, FRB host galaxy detected in HI, not including the Milky Way. We find that W13-18 has a HI mass of $M_{\rm HI}$ = 6.5 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$, a HI-to-stellar mass ratio of 2.17, and coincides with a continuum radio source of flux density at 1.4 GHz of 1.3 mJy. The HI global spectrum of W13-18 appears to be asymmetric, albeit the HI observation has a low S/N, and the galaxy itself appears modestly undisturbed. These properties are compared to the early literature of HI emission detected in other FRB hosts to date, where either the HI global spectra were strongly asymmetric, or there were clearly disrupted HI intensity map distributions. W13-18 lacks sufficient S/N to determine whether it is significantly less asymmetric in its HI distribution than previous examples of FRB host galaxies. However, there are no strong signs of a major interaction in the HI or optical image of the host galaxy that would stimulate a burst of star formation and hence the production of putative FRB progenitors related to massive stars and their compact remnants., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. We analyze the Near Infrared ($\sim0.8-1\mu$m) rest-frame morphologies of galaxies with $\log M_*/M_\odot>9$ in the redshift range $010.5$) at $z\sim5$, and bulge-dominated galaxies also exist at these early epochs, confirming a rich and evolved morphological diversity of galaxies $\sim1$ Gyr after the Big Bang. Finally, we find that the morphology-quenching relation is already in place for massive galaxies at $z>3$, with massive quiescent galaxies ($\log M_*/M_\odot>10.5$) being predominantly bulge-dominated., Comment: Submitted to A&A, comments welcome

Mid-infrared observations are powerful in identifying heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) which have weak emission in other wavelengths. Data from the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) onboard JWST provides an excellent opportunity to perform such studies. We take advantage of the MIRI imaging data from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS) to investigate the AGN population in the distant universe. We estimate the source properties of MIRI-selected objects by utilizing spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling, and classify them into star-forming galaxies (SF), SF-AGN mixed objects, and AGN. The source numbers of these types are 418, 111, and 31, respectively, from 4 MIRI pointings covering $\sim 9$ arcmin$^2$. The sample spans a redshift range of $\approx 0$--5. We derive the median SEDs for all three source types, respectively, and publicly release them. The median MIRI SED of AGN is similar to the typical SEDs of hot dust-obscured galaxies and Seyfert 2s, for which the mid-IR SEDs are dominantly from AGN-heated hot dust. Based on our SED-fit results, we estimate the black-hole accretion density (BHAD; i.e., total BH growth rate per comoving volume) as a function of redshift. At $z<3$, the resulting BHAD agrees with the X-ray measurements in general. At $z>3$, we identify a total of 27 AGN and SF-AGN mixed objects, leading to that our high-$z$ BHAD is substantially higher than the X-ray results ($\sim 0.5$ dex at $z \approx 3$--5). We take advantage of the NIRCam photometric observations available as part of the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey (CEERS) to identify and analyse very red sources in an effort to discover very dusty star forming galaxies. We select red galaxies as objects with a S/N>3 at 4.4 $\mu$m and a S/N<2 in all JWST and HST filters at $\lambda\leq2\mu$m, which corresponds to [F200W]-[F444W]>1.2 considering CEERS depths. This selection is ideal to identify very dusty (Av>1 mag) galaxies with stellar masses between $10^6$ to $10^{10}\, \rm M_{\odot}$ at z<5, more massive dusty galaxies at z=5-18 and galaxies at z>18 due to the Lyman absorption, independently of their dust extinction. Our sample of F200W-dropouts contains no strong candidates at z>6.5, instead it consists almost completely (~81%) of z<2 low-mass galaxies, with a median stellar mass of $10^{7.3} \rm M_{\odot}$. These galaxies show an exceptional dust extinction with median value of Av=4.9 mag, completely unexpected given their low stellar mass. The remaining galaxies, which are at z<6.5, show similar large dust extinction (Av>1), but they are generally more massive $>10^{7.5}\rm M_{\odot}$., Comment: 30 pages, 1 table, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Visual inspections of the first optical rest-frame images from JWST have indicated a surprisingly high fraction of disk galaxies at high redshifts. Here, we alternatively apply self-supervised machine learning to explore the morphological diversity at $z \geq 3$. Our proposed data-driven representation scheme of galaxy morphologies, calibrated on mock images from the TNG50 simulation, is shown to be robust to noise and to correlate well with the physical properties of the simulated galaxies, including their 3D structure. We apply the method simultaneously to F200W and F356W galaxy images of a mass-complete sample ($M_*/M_\odot>10^9$) at $ 3 \leq z \leq 6$ from the first JWST/NIRCam CEERS data release. We find that the simulated and observed galaxies do not exactly populate the same manifold in the representation space from contrastive learning. We also find that half the galaxies classified as disks -- either CNN-based or visually -- populate a similar region of the representation space as TNG50 galaxies with low stellar specific angular momentum and non-oblate structure. Although our data-driven study does not allow us to firmly conclude on the true nature of these galaxies, it suggests that the disk fraction at $z \geq 3$ remains uncertain and possibly overestimated by traditional supervised classifications. Deeper imaging and spectroscopic follow-ups as well as comparisons with other simulations will help to unambiguously determine the true nature of these galaxies, and establish more robust constraints on the emergence of disks at very high redshift., Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures. Despite the success of galaxy-scale strong gravitational lens studies with Hubble-quality imaging, the number of well-studied strong lenses remains small. As a result, robust comparisons of the lens models to theoretical predictions are difficult. This motivates our application of automated Bayesian lens modeling methods to observations from public data releases of overlapping large ground-based imaging and spectroscopic surveys: Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) and Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA), respectively. We use the open-source lens modeling software PyAutoLens to perform our analysis. We demonstrate the feasibility of strong lens modeling with large-survey data at lower resolution as a complementary avenue to studies that utilize more time-consuming and expensive observations of individual lenses at higher resolution. We discuss advantages and challenges, with special consideration given to determining background source redshifts from single-aperture spectra and to disentangling foreground lens and background source light. High uncertainties in the best-fit parameters for the models due to the limits of optical resolution in ground-based observatories and the small sample size can be improved with future study. The star formation rate in galaxies is well known to correlate with stellar mass (the `star-forming main sequence'). Here we extend this further to explore any additional dependence on galaxy surface brightness, a proxy for stellar mass surface density. We use a large sample of low redshift ($z \leq 0.08$) galaxies from the GAMA survey which have both SED derived star formation rates and photometric bulge-disc decompositions, the latter providing measures of disc surface brightness and disc masses. Using two samples, one of galaxies fitted by a single component with S\'{e}rsic index below 2 and one of the discs from two-component fits, we find that once the overall mass dependence of star formation rate is accounted for, there is no evidence in either sample for a further dependence on stellar surface density., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galaxy populations are known to exhibit a strong colour bimodality, corresponding to blue star-forming and red quiescent subpopulations. The relative abundance of the two populations has been found to vary with stellar mass and environment. In this paper, we explore the effect of environment considering different types of measurements. We choose a sample of $49, 911$ galaxies with $0.05 < z < 0.18$ from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey. We study the dependence of the fraction of red galaxies on different measures of the local environment as well as the large-scale "geometric" environment defined by density gradients in the surround- ing cosmic web. We find that the red galaxy fraction varies with the environment at fixed stellar mass. The red fraction depends more strongly on local environmental measures than on large-scale geometric environment measures. By comparing the different environmental densities, we show that no density measurement fully explains the observed environmental red fraction variation, suggesting the different measures of environmental density contain different information. We test whether the local environmental measures, when combined together, can explain all the observed environmental red fraction variation. The geometric environment has a small residual effect, and this effect is larger for voids than any other type of geometric environment. This could provide a test of the physics applied to cosmological-scale galaxy evolution simulations as it combines large-scale effects with local environmental impact., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 16 pages; 10 figures; 2 tables

Understanding the effect spiral structure has on star formation properties of galaxies is important to completing our picture of spiral structure evolution. Previous studies have investigated connections between spiral arm properties with star formation, but the effect that the number of spiral arms has on this process is unclear. Here we use the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey paired with the citizen science visual classifications from the Galaxy Zoo project to explore galaxies' spiral arm number and how it connects to the star formation process. We use the votes from the GAMA-KiDS GalaxyZoo classification to investigate the link between spiral arm number with stellar mass, star formation rate, and specific star formation rate. We find that galaxies with fewer spiral arms have lower stellar masses and higher sSFRs, while those with more spiral arms tend toward higher stellar masses and lower sSFRs, and conclude that galaxies are less efficient at forming stars if they have more spiral arms. The identification of AGN in large surveys has been hampered by seemingly discordant classifications arising from differing diagnostic methods, usually tracing distinct processes specific to a particular wavelength regime. However, as shown in Yao et al. (2020), the combination of optical emission line measurements and mid-infrared photometry can be used to optimise the discrimination capability between AGN and star formation activity. In this paper we test our new classification scheme by combining the existing GAMA-WISE data with high-quality MeerKAT radio continuum data covering 8 deg$^2$ of the GAMA G23 region. Using this sample of 1 841 galaxies (z < 0.25), we investigate the total infrared (derived from 12$\mu$m) to radio luminosity ratio, q(TIR), and its relationship to optical-infrared AGN and star-forming (SF) classifications. We find that while q(TIR) is efficient at detecting AGN activity in massive galaxies generally appearing quiescent in the infrared, it becomes less reliable for cases where the emission from star formation in the host galaxy is dominant. However, we find that the q(TIR) can identify up to 70 % more AGNs not discernible at optical and/or infrared wavelengths. The median q(TIR) of our SF sample is 2.57 $\pm$ 0.23 consistent with previous local universe estimates.

We have studied the galaxy-group cross-correlations in redshift space for the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) Survey. We use a set of mock GAMA galaxy and group catalogues to develop and test a novel 'halo streaming' model for redshift-space distortions. This treats 2-halo correlations via the streaming model, plus an empirical 1-halo term derived from the mocks, allowing accurate modelling into the nonlinear regime. In order to probe the robustness of the growth rate inferred from redshift-space distortions, we divide galaxies by colour, and divide groups according to their total stellar mass, calibrated to total mass via gravitational lensing. We fit our model to correlation data, to obtain estimates of the perturbation growth rate, $f\sigma_8$, validating parameter errors via the dispersion between different mock realizations. In both mocks and real data, we demonstrate that the results are closely consistent between different subsets of the group and galaxy populations, considering the use of correlation data down to some minimum projected radius, $r_{\rm min}$. For the mock data, we can use the halo streaming model to below $r_{\rm min} = 5h^{-1}$ Mpc, finding that all subsets yield growth rates within about 3% of each other, and consistent with the true value. For the actual GAMA data, the results are limited by cosmic variance: $f\sigma_8=0.29\pm 0.10$ at an effective redshift of 0.20; but there is every reason to expect that this method will yield precise constraints from larger datasets of the same type, such as the DESI bright galaxy survey., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. We present new results of a 12CO(J=1-0) imaging survey using the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) for 31 HI detected galaxies in the IC 1459 and NGC 4636 groups. This is the first CO imaging survey for loose galaxy groups. We obtained well-resolved CO data (~0.7-1.5 kpc) for a total of 16 galaxies in two environments. By comparing our ACA CO data with the HI and UV data, we probe the impacts of the group environment on the cold gas components (CO and HI gas) and star formation activity. We find that CO and/or HI morphologies are disturbed in our group members, some of which show highly asymmetric CO distributions (e.g., IC 5264, NGC 7421, and NGC 7418). In comparison with isolated galaxies in the xCOLD GASS sample, our group galaxies tend to have low star formation rates and low H2 gas fractions. Our findings suggest that the group environment can change the distribution of cold gas components, including the molecular gas, and star formation properties of galaxies. Galaxy populations show bimodality in a variety of properties: stellar mass, colour, specific star-formation rate, size, and S\'ersic index. These parameters are our feature space. We use an existing sample of 7556 galaxies from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, represented using five features and the K-means clustering technique, showed that the bimodalities are the manifestation of a more complex population structure, represented by between 2 and 6 clusters. Here we use Self Organizing Maps (SOM), an unsupervised learning technique which can be used to visualize similarity in a higher dimensional space using a 2D representation, to map these five-dimensional clusters in the feature space onto two-dimensional projections. To further analyze these clusters, using the SOM information, we agree with previous results that the sub-populations found in the feature space can be reasonably mapped onto three or five clusters. We explore where the "green valley" galaxies are mapped onto the SOM, indicating multiple interstitial populations within the green valley population. Finally, we use the projection of the SOM to verify whether morphological information provided by GalaxyZoo users, for example, if features are visible, can be mapped onto the SOM-generated map. Voting on whether galaxies are smooth, likely ellipticals, or "featured" can reasonably be separated but smaller morphological features (bar, spiral arms) can not. SOMs promise to be a useful tool to map and identify instructive sub-populations in multidimensional galaxy survey feature space, provided they are large enough., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We investigate the properties of 232 optical spectroscopically selected groups from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey that overlap the XXL X-ray cluster survey. X-ray aperture flux measurements combined with GAMA group data provides the largest available sample of optical groups with detailed galaxy membership information and consistently measured X-ray fluxes and upper limits. 142 of these groups are divided into three subsets based on the relative strength of X-ray and optical emission, and we see a trend in galaxy properties between these subsets: X-ray overluminous groups contain a lower fraction of both blue and star forming galaxies compared with X-ray underluminous systems. X-ray overluminous groups also have a more dominant central galaxy, with a magnitude gap between first and second ranked galaxies on average 0.22 mag larger than in underluminous groups. The central galaxy in overluminous groups also lies closer to the centre of the group. We examine a number of other structural properties of our groups, such as axis ratio, velocity dispersion, and group crossing time and find trends with X-ray emission in some of these properties despite the high stochastic noise from the limited number of group galaxies. We attribute the trends we see to the evolutionary state of groups, with X-ray overluminous systems being more dynamically evolved than underluminous groups. The X-ray overluminous groups have had more time to develop a luminous intragroup medium, quench member galaxies, and build the mass of the central galaxy through mergers compared to underluminous groups. However, a minority of X-ray underluminous groups have properties that suggest them to be dynamically mature. The lack of hot gas in these systems cannot be accounted for by high star formation efficiency, suggesting that high gas entropy resulting from feedback is the likely cause of their weak X-ray emission., Comment: Accepted for Publication in A&A. 18 pages, 17 figures

We aim to generate a catalogue of merging galaxies within the 5.4 sq. deg. North Ecliptic Pole over the redshift range $0.0 < z < 0.3$. To do this, imaging data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam are used along with morphological parameters derived from these same data. The catalogue was generated using a hybrid approach. Two neural networks were trained to perform binary merger non-merger classifications: one for galaxies with $z < 0.15$ and another for $0.15 \leq z < 0.30$. Each network used the image and morphological parameters of a galaxy as input. The galaxies that were identified as merger candidates by the network were then visually checked by experts. The resulting mergers will be used to calculate the merger fraction as a function of redshift and compared with literature results. We found that 86.3% of galaxy mergers at $z < 0.15$ and 79.0% of mergers at $0.15 \leq z < 0.30$ are expected to be correctly identified by the networks. Of the 34 264 galaxies classified by the neural networks, 10 195 were found to be merger candidates. Of these, 2109 were visually identified to be merging galaxies. We find that the merger fraction increases with redshift, consistent with literature results from observations and simulations, and that there is a mild star-formation rate enhancement in the merger population of a factor of $1.102 \pm 0.084$., Comment: Accepted to A&A, 26 pages, 20 figures, 8 tables, 3 appendixes, full tables 1 and 4 will be available on CDS

The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^{4}$G) is a detailed study of over 2300 nearby galaxies in the near-infrared (NIR), which has been critical to our understanding of the detailed structures of nearby galaxies. Because the sample galaxies were selected only using radio-derived velocities, however, the survey favored late-type disk galaxies over lenticulars and ellipticals. A follow-up Spitzer survey was conducted to rectify this bias, adding 465 early-type galaxies (ETGs) to the original sample, to be analyzed in a manner consistent with the initial survey. We present the data release of this ETG extension, up to the third data processing pipeline (P3): surface photometry. We produce curves of growth and radial surface brightness profiles (with and without inclination corrections) using reduced and masked Spitzer IRAC 3.6$\mu$m and 4.5$\mu$m images produced through Pipelines 1 and 2, respectively. From these profiles, we derive the following integrated quantities: total magnitudes, stellar masses, concentration parameters, and galaxy size metrics. We showcase NIR scaling relations for ETGs among these quantities. We examine general trends across the whole S$^{4}$G and ETG extension among our derived parameters, highlighting differences between ETGs and late-type galaxies (LTGs). ETGs are, on average, more massive and more concentrated than LTGs, and also show subtle distinctions among ETG morphological sub-types. We also derive the following scaling relations and compare with previous results in visible light: mass--size (both half-light and isophotal), mass--concentration, mass--surface brightness (central, effective, and within 1 kpc), and mass--color. We present the evolution of the star-formation dispersion - stellar mass relation ($\sigma_{SFR}$-M$_{\star}$) in the DEVILS D10 region using new measurements derived using the ProSpect spectral energy distribution fitting code. We find that $\sigma_{SFR}$-M$_{\star}$ shows the characteristic 'U-shape' at intermediate stellar masses from 0.1

We report on the detection of a large, extended HI cloud complex in the GAMA G23 field, located at a redshift of $z\,\sim\,0.03$, observed as part of the MeerHOGS campaign (a pilot survey to explore the mosaicing capabilities of MeerKAT). The cloud complex, with a total mass of $10^{10.0}\,M_\odot$, lies in proximity to a large galaxy group with $M_\mathrm{dyn}\sim10^{13.5}\,M_\odot$. We identify seven HI peak concentrations, interconnected as a tenuous 'chain' structure, extending $\sim 400\,\mathrm{kpc}$ from east-to-west, with the largest (central) concentration containing $10{^{9.7}}\,M_\odot$ in HI gas distributed across $50\,\mathrm{kpc}$. The main source is not detected in ultra-violet, optical or infrared imaging. The implied gas mass-to-light ($M_\mathrm{HI}$/$L_\mathrm{r}$) is extreme ($>$1000) even in comparison to other 'dark clouds'. The complex has very little kinematic structure ($110\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$), making it difficult to identify cloud rotation. Assuming pressure support, the total mass of the central concentration is $>10^{10.2}\,M_\odot$, while a lower limit to the dynamical mass in the case of full rotational support is $10^{10.4}\,M_\odot$. If the central concentration is a stable structure, it has to contain some amount of unseen matter, but potentially less than is observed for a typical galaxy. It is, however, not clear whether the structure has any gravitationally stable concentrations. We report a faint UV--optical--infrared source in proximity to one of the smaller concentrations in the gas complex, leading to a possible stellar association. We present results from our analysis of the Hydra I cluster observed in neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) as part of the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). These WALLABY observations cover a 60-square-degree field of view with uniform sensitivity and a spatial resolution of 30 arcsec. We use these wide-field observations to investigate the effect of galaxy environment on HI gas removal and star formation quenching by comparing the properties of cluster, infall and field galaxies extending up to $\sim5R_{200}$ from the cluster centre. We find a sharp decrease in the HI-detected fraction of infalling galaxies at a projected distance of $\sim1.5R_{200}$ from the cluster centre from $\sim0.85\%$ to $\sim0.35\%$. We see evidence for the environment removing gas from the outskirts of HI-detected cluster and infall galaxies through the decrease in the HI to $r$-band optical disc diameter ratio. These galaxies lie on the star forming main sequence, indicating that gas removal is not yet affecting the inner star-forming discs and is limited to the galaxy outskirts. Although we do not detect galaxies undergoing galaxy-wide quenching, we do observe a reduction in recent star formation in the outer disc of cluster galaxies, which is likely due to the smaller gas reservoirs present beyond the optical radius in these galaxies. Stacking of HI non-detections with HI masses below $M_{\rm{HI}}\lesssim10^{8.4}\,\rm{M}_{\odot}$ will be required to probe the HI of galaxies undergoing quenching at distances $\gtrsim60$ Mpc with WALLABY., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Here, we present a catalog of blended spectra in Data Release 1 of the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). Of the 23197 spectra, 181 showed signs of a blend of redshifts and spectral templates. We examine these blends in detail for signs of either a candidate strong lensing galaxy or a useful overlapping galaxy pair. One of the three DEVILS target fields, COSMOS (D10) is close to complete and it is fully imaged with Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST/ACS) and we visually examine the 57 blended spectra in this field in the F814W postage stamps. Nine are classical strong lensing candidates with an elliptical as the lens, out to higher redshifts than any previous search with spectroscopic surveys such as SDSS or GAMA. The gravitational lens candidate success rate similar to earlier such searches (0.1%). Strong gravitational lenses identified with blended spectroscopy have typically shown a high success rate (>70%) which make these interesting targets for future higher resolution lensing studies, monitoring for supernovae cosmography, or searches for magnified atomic hydrogen signal., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables, v2 fixed figure 1 and 2 mislabeling

We present a study of the relationships and environmental dependencies between stellar mass, star formation rate, and gas metallicity for more than 700 galaxies in groups up to redshift 0.35 from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. To identify the main drivers, our sample was analyzed as a function of group-centric distance, projected galaxy number density, and stellar mass. By using control samples of more than 16000 star-forming field galaxies and volume limited samples, we find that the highest enhancement in SFR (0.3 dex) occurs in galaxies with the lowest local density. In contrast to previous work, our data show small enhancements of $\sim$0.1 dex in SFR for galaxies at the highest local densities or group-centric distances. Our data indicates quenching in SFR only for massive galaxies, suggesting that stellar mass might be the main driver of quenching processes for star forming galaxies. We can discard a morphological driven quenching, since the S\'ersic index distribution for group and control galaxies are similar. The gas metallicity does not vary drastically. It increases $\sim$0.08 dex for galaxies at the highest local densities, and decreases for galaxies at the highest group-centric distances, in agreement with previous work. Altogether, the local density, rather than group-centric distance, shows the stronger impact in enhancing both, the SFR and gas metallicity. We applied the same methodology to galaxies from the IllustrisTNG simulations, and although we were able to reproduce the general observational trends, the differences between group and control samples only partially agree with the observations, Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We present the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) WALLABY pre-pilot observations of two `dark' HI sources (with HI masses of a few times 10^8 Msol and no known stellar counterpart) that reside within 363 kpc of NGC 1395, the most massive early-type galaxy in the Eridanus group of galaxies. We investigate whether these `dark' HI sources have resulted from past tidal interactions or whether they are an extreme class of low surface brightness galaxies. Our results suggest that both scenarios are possible, and not mutually exclusive. The two `dark' HI sources are compact, reside in relative isolation and are more than 159 kpc away from their nearest HI-rich galaxy neighbour. Regardless of origin, the HI sizes and masses of both `dark' HI sources are consistent with the HI size-mass relationship that is found in nearby low-mass galaxies, supporting the possibility that these HI sources are an extreme class of low surface brightness galaxies. We identified three analogues of candidate primordial `dark' HI galaxies within the TNG100 cosmological, hydrodynamic simulation. All three model analogues are dark matter-dominated, have assembled most of their mass 12-13 Gyr ago, and have not experienced much evolution until cluster infall 1-2 Gyr ago. Our WALLABY pre-pilot science results suggest that the upcoming large area HI surveys will have a significant impact on our understanding of low surface brightness galaxies and the physical processes that shape them., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We explore the clustering of galaxy groups in the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to investigate the dependence of group bias and profile on separation scale and group mass. Due to the inherent uncertainty in estimating the group selection function, and hence the group auto-correlation function, we instead measure the projected galaxy--group cross-correlation function. We find that the group profile has a strong dependence on scale and group mass on scales $r_\bot \lesssim 1 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}$. We also find evidence that the most massive groups live in extended, overdense, structures. In the first application of marked clustering statistics to groups, we find that group-mass marked clustering peaks on scales comparable to the typical group radius of $r_\bot \approx 0.5 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}$. While massive galaxies are associated with massive groups, the marked statistics show no indication of galaxy mass segregation within groups. We show similar results from the IllustrisTNG simulations and the L-Galaxies model, although L-Galaxies shows an enhanced bias and galaxy mass dependence on small scales., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures. The Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) is an ongoing high-completeness, deep spectroscopic survey of $\sim$60,000 galaxies to Y$<$21.2 mag, over $\sim$6 deg2 in three well-studied deep extragalactic fields: D10 (COSMOS), D02 (XMM-LSS) and D03 (ECDFS). Numerous DEVILS projects all require consistent, uniformly-derived and state-of-the-art photometric data with which to measure galaxy properties. Existing photometric catalogues in these regions either use varied photometric measurement techniques for different facilities/wavelengths leading to inconsistencies, older imaging data and/or rely on source detection and photometry techniques with known problems. Here we use the ProFound image analysis package and state-of-the-art imaging datasets (including Subaru-HSC, VST-VOICE, VISTA-VIDEO and UltraVISTA-DR4) to derive matched-source photometry in 22 bands from the FUV to 500{\mu}m. This photometry is found to be consistent, or better, in colour-analysis to previous approaches using fixed-size apertures (which are specifically tuned to derive colours), but produces superior total source photometry, essential for the derivation of stellar masses, star-formation rates, star-formation histories, etc. Our photometric catalogue is described in detail and, after internal DEVILS team projects, will be publicly released for use by the broader scientific community., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

This study uses HI image data from the WALLABY pilot survey with the ASKAP telescope, covering the Hydra cluster out to 2.5$r_{200}$. We present the projected phase-space distribution of HI-detected galaxies in Hydra, and identify that nearly two thirds of the galaxies within $1.25r_{200}$ may be in the early stages of ram pressure stripping. More than half of these may be only weakly stripped, with the ratio of strippable HI (i.e., where the galactic restoring force is lower than the ram pressure in the disk) mass fraction (over total HI mass) distributed uniformly below 90%. Consequently, the HI mass is expected to decrease by only a few 0.1 dex after the currently strippable portion of HI in these systems has been stripped. A more detailed look at the subset of galaxies that are spatially resolved by WALLABY observations shows that, while it typically takes less than 200 Myr for ram pressure stripping to remove the currently strippable portion of HI, it may take more than 600 Myr to significantly change the total HI mass. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is the latest observational effort to find exoplanets and map bright transient optical phenomena. Supernovae (SN) are particularly interesting as cosmological standard candles for cosmological distance measures. The limiting magnitude of TESS strongly constrains supernova detection to the very nearby Universe ($m \sim$ 19, $z<0.05$). We explore the possibility that more distant supernovae that are gravitationally lensed and magnified by a foreground galaxy can be detected by TESS, an opportunity to measure the time delay between light paths and constrain the Hubble constant independently. We estimate the rate of occurrence of such systems, assuming reasonable distributions of magnification, host dust attenuation and redshift. There are approximately 16 type Ia and 43 core-collapse SN (SNcc) expected to be observable with TESS each year, which translates to 18% and 43% chance of detection per year, respectively. Monitoring the largest collections of known strong galaxy-galaxy lenses from Petrillo et al., this translates into 0.6% and 1.3% chances of a SNIa and SNcc per year. The TESS all-sky detection rates are lower than those of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Vera Rubin Observatory. However, on the ecliptic poles, TESS performs almost as well as its all-sky search thanks to its continuous coverage: 2 and 4% chance of an observed SN (Ia or cc) each year. We use the 21 cm emission line data from the DINGO-VLA project to study the atomic hydrogen gas H\,{\textsc i} of the Universe at redshifts $z<0.1$. Results are obtained using a stacking analysis, combining the H\,{\textsc i} signals from 3622 galaxies extracted from 267 VLA pointings in the G09 field of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly Survey (GAMA). Rather than using a traditional one-dimensional spectral stacking method, a three-dimensional cubelet stacking method is used to enable deconvolution and the accurate recovery of average galaxy fluxes from this high-resolution interferometric dataset. By probing down to galactic scales, this experiment also overcomes confusion corrections that have been necessary to include in previous single dish studies. After stacking and deconvolution, we obtain a $30\sigma$ H\,{\textsc i} mass measurement from the stacked spectrum, indicating an average H\,{\textsc i} mass of $M_{\rm H\,{\textsc i}}=(1.674\pm 0.183)\times 10^{9}~{\Msun}$. The corresponding cosmic density of neutral atomic hydrogen is $\Omega_{\rm H\,{\textsc i}}=(0.377\pm 0.042)\times 10^{-3}$ at redshift of $z=0.051$. We present a revised measurement of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL), based on the contribution of resolved galaxies to the integrated galaxy light (IGL). The cosmic optical background radiation (COB), encodes the light generated by star-formation, and provides a wealth of information about the cosmic star formation history (CSFH). We combine wide and deep galaxy number counts from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA) and Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS), along with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive and other deep survey datasets, in 9 multi-wavelength filters to measure the COB in the range from 0.35 micron to 2.2 micron. We derive the luminosity density in each band independently and show good agreement with recent and complementary estimates of the optical-EBL from very high-energy (VHE) experiments. Our error analysis suggests that the IGL and Gamma-ray measurements are now fully consistent to within ~10%, suggesting little need for any additional source of diffuse light beyond the known galaxy population. We use our revised IGL measurements to constrain the cosmic star-formation history, and place amplitude constraints on a number of recent estimates. As a consistency check, we can now demonstrate convincingly, that the CSFH, stellar mass growth, and the optical-EBL provide a fully consistent picture of galaxy evolution. We conclude that the peak of star-formation rate lies in the range 0.066-0.076 Msol/yr/Mpc^3 at a lookback time of 9.1 to 10.9 Gyrs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate how different galaxy properties - luminosities in u, g, r, J, K-bands, stellar mass, star formation rate and specific star formation rate trace the environment in the local universe. We also study the effect of survey flux limits on galaxy clustering measurements. We measure the two-point correlation function (2pCF) and marked correlation functions (MCFs) using the aforementioned properties as marks. We use nearly stellar-mass-complete galaxy sample in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.16 from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey with a flux limit of r < 19.8. Further, we impose a brighter flux limit of r < 17.8 to our sample and repeat the measurements to study how this affects galaxy clustering analysis. We compare our results to measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with flux limits of r < 17.8 and r < 16.8. We show that the stellar mass is the best tracer of galaxy environment, the K-band luminosity being a good substitute, although such a proxy sample misses close pairs of evolved, red galaxies. We also confirm that the u-band luminosity is a good, but not a perfect proxy of star formation rate in the context of galaxy clustering. We present a bright galaxy sample with accurate and precise photometric redshifts (photo-zs), selected using $ugriZYJHK_\mathrm{s}$ photometry from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) Data Release 4 (DR4). The highly pure and complete dataset is flux-limited at $r<20$ mag, covers $\sim1000$ deg$^2$, and contains about 1 million galaxies after artifact masking. We exploit the overlap with Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopy as calibration to determine photo-zs with the supervised machine learning neural network algorithm implemented in the ANNz2 software. The photo-zs have mean error of $|\langle \delta z \rangle| \sim 5 \times 10^{-4}$ and low scatter (scaled mean absolute deviation of $\sim 0.018(1+z)$), both practically independent of the $r$-band magnitude and photo-z at $0.05 < z_\mathrm{phot} < 0.5$. Combined with the 9-band photometry, these allow us to estimate robust absolute magnitudes and stellar masses for the full sample. As a demonstration of the usefulness of these data we split the dataset into red and blue galaxies, use them as lenses and measure the weak gravitational lensing signal around them for five stellar mass bins. We fit a halo model to these high-precision measurements to constrain the stellar-mass--halo-mass relations for blue and red galaxies. We find that for high stellar mass ($M_\star>5\times 10^{11} M_\odot$), the red galaxies occupy dark matter halos that are much more massive than those occupied by blue galaxies with the same stellar mass. We study the environment in which a galaxy lies (i.e. field or group) and its connection with the morphology of the galaxy. This is done by examining the distribution of parametric and non-parametric statistics across the star-formation rate (SFR) - stellar mass (M$_{\star}$) plane and studying how these distributions change with the environment in the local universe ($z<0.15$). We determine the concentration (C), Gini, M$_{20}$, asymmetry, Gini-M$_{20}$ bulge statistic (GMB), 50\% light radius ($r_{50}$), total S\'{e}rsic index, and bulge S\'{e}rsic index ($n_{Bulge}$) for galaxies from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey using optical images from the Kilo Degree Survey. We determine the galaxy environment using the GAMA group catalogue and split the galaxies into field or group galaxies. The group galaxies are further divided by the group halo mass (M$_{h}$) - $11\leq\mathrm{log(M}_{h}/\mathrm{M}_\odot)<12$, $12\leq\mathrm{log(M}_{h}/\mathrm{M}_\odot)<13$, and $13\leq\mathrm{log(M}_{h}/\mathrm{M}_\odot)<14$ - and into central and satellite galaxies. The galaxies in each of these samples are then placed onto the SFR-M$_{\star}$ plane, and each parameter is used as a third dimension. We fit the resulting distributions for each parameter in each sample using two two-dimensional Gaussian distributions: one for star-forming galaxies and one for quiescent galaxies. The coefficients of these Gaussian fits are then compared between environments. Using C and $r_{50}$, we find that galaxies typically become larger as the group mass increases. This change is greater for larger galaxies. There is no indication that galaxies are typically more or less clumpy as the environment changes. Using GMB and $n_{Bulge}$, we see that the star-forming galaxies do not become more bulge or disk dominated as the group mass changes. We study the star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass ($M_{\star}$) and the gas metallicity (Z) for 4,636 galaxy pairs using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Our galaxy pairs lie in a redshift range of 0 $<$ $z$ $<$ 0.35, mass range of 7.5 $<$ log( M$_{\star}$/ M$_\odot$) $<$ 11.5 and $\Delta V$ $<$ 1000 km s$^{-1}$. We explore variations in SFR and Z from three point of views: multiplicity, pair separation and dynamics. We define multiplicity as the number of galaxies paired with a single galaxy, and analyzed for the first time variations in SFR and Z for both, single pairs and pairs with higher multiplicity. For the latter, we find SFR enhancements from 0.025-0.15 dex, that would shift the M-SFR relation of single pairs by 27$\%$ to higher SFRs. The effect of Z on the other hand, is of only 4$\%$. We analyze the most and least massive galaxy of major/minor pairs as a function of the pair separation. We define major pairs those with mass ratios of 0.5 $<$ $M_1$/$M_2$ $<$ 2, while pairs with more discrepant mass ratios are classified as minor pairs. We find SFR enhancements of up to 2 and 4 times with respect to their control sample, for major and minor pairs. For the case of Z, we find decrements of up to 0.08 dex for the closest pairs. When we focus on dynamics, Z enhancements are found for minor pairs with high velocity dispersion $(\sigma_p > 250 \; \mathrm{km\,s ^{-1}})$ and high multiplicity.

We present the results of three commissioning HI observations obtained with the MeerKAT radio telescope. These observations make up part of the preparation for the forthcoming MHONGOOSE nearby galaxy survey, which is a MeerKAT large survey project that will study the accretion of gas in galaxies and the link between gas and star formation. We used the available HI data sets, along with ancillary data at other wavelengths, to study the morphology of the MHONGOOSE sample galaxy, ESO 302-G014, which is a nearby gas-rich dwarf galaxy. We find that ESO 302-G014 has a lopsided, asymmetric outer disc with a low column density. In addition, we find a tail or filament of HI clouds extending away from the galaxy, as well as an isolated HI cloud some 20 kpc to the south of the galaxy. We suggest that these features indicate a minor interaction with a low-mass galaxy. Optical imaging shows a possible dwarf galaxy near the tail, but based on the current data, we cannot confirm any association with ESO 302-G014. Nonetheless, an interaction scenario with some kind of low-mass companion is still supported by the presence of a significant amount of molecular gas, which is almost equal to the stellar mass, and a number of prominent stellar clusters, which suggest recently triggered star formation. These data show that MeerKAT produces exquisite imaging data. The forthcoming full-depth survey observations of ESO 302-G014 and other sample galaxies will, therefore, offer insights into the fate of neutral gas as it moves from the intergalactic medium onto galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

How do galaxy properties (such as stellar mass, luminosity, star formation rate, and morphology) and their evolution depend on the mass of their host dark matter halo? Using the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) group catalogue, we address this question by exploring the dependence on host halo mass of the luminosity function (LF) and stellar mass function (SMF) for grouped galaxies subdivided by colour, morphology and central/satellite. We find that spheroidal galaxies in particular dominate the bright and massive ends of the LF and SMF, respectively. More massive haloes host more massive and more luminous central galaxies. The satellite LF and SMF respectively show a systematic brightening of characteristic magnitude, and increase in characteristic mass, with increasing halo mass. In contrast to some previous results, the faint-end and low-mass slopes show little systematic dependence on halo mass. Semi-analytic models and simulations show similar or enhanced dependence of central mass and luminosity on halo mass. Faint and low-mass simulated satellite galaxies are remarkably independent of halo mass, but the most massive satellites are more common in more massive groups. In the first investigation of low-redshift LF and SMF evolution in group environments, we find that the red/blue ratio of galaxies in groups has increased since redshift $z \approx 0.3$ relative to the field population. This observation strongly suggests that quenching of star formation in galaxies as they are accreted into galaxy groups is a significant and ongoing process., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, MNRAS in press

We present a detailed study of emission-line systems in the GAMA G23 region, making use of $\textit{WISE}$ photometry that includes carefully measured resolved sources. After applying several cuts to the initial catalogue of $\sim$41,000 galaxies, we extract a sample of 9,809 galaxies. We then compare the spectral diagnostic (BPT) classification of 1154 emission-line galaxies (38$\%$ resolved in W1) to their location in the $\textit{WISE}$ colour-colour diagram, leading to the creation of a new zone for mid-infrared "warm" galaxies located 2$\sigma$ above the star-forming sequence, below the standard $\textit{WISE}$ AGN region. We find that the BPT and $\textit{WISE}$ diagrams agree on the classification for 85$\%$ and 8$\%$ of the galaxies as non-AGN (star forming = SF) and AGN, respectively, and disagree on $\sim$7$\%$ of the entire classified sample. 39$\%$ of the AGN (all types) are broad-line systems for which the [\ion{N}{ii}] and [H$\alpha$] fluxes can barely be disentangled, giving in most cases spurious [\ion{N}{ii}]/[H$\alpha$] flux ratios. However, several optical AGN appear to be completely consistent with SF in $\textit{WISE}$. We argue that these could be low power AGN, or systems whose hosts dominate the IR emission. Alternatively, given the sometimes high [\ion{O}{iii}] luminosity in these galaxies, the emission lines may be generated by shocks coming from super-winds associated with SF rather than the AGN activity. Based on our findings, we have created a new diagnostic: [W1-W2] vs [\ion{N}{ii}]/[H$\alpha$], which has the virtue of separating SF from AGN and high-excitation sources.
