The effect of atmospheric gases on the ionization energy (I) of titanyl phthalocyanine thin film was investigated by an apparatus of photoemission yield spectroscopy developed for the measurements of I for the same specimen both in vacuum and under gaseous atmosphere. It was found that the value of I is affected by the exposure to various ambient gases (i.e., air, nitrogen, and oxygen of 1 atm, and water vapor corresponding to 27% relative humidity at 300 K), and that the effect strongly depends on the gas. The ionization energies in vacuum could be determined as the onset I0 of the cube-root plot of the photoemission yield as a function of photon energy. When the sample was exposed to gases, the cube-root plot still gives an onset, but often a long tail at the low-energy side with another onset It was also observed. The first exposure to air did not affect both I0 and It much, while the following evacuation-exposure cycles caused mostly reversible decrease and increase of I0 and It by about 0.2 and 0.4 eV, respectively. Among the examined constituent gases of air, nitrogen was found to hardly affect both I0 and It except for the small temporal decrease by 0.06 eV at the first exposure. Similar trends of the change of I0 and It with those for air were found for oxygen, with the amplitudes of mostly reversible change being 0.1 eV for I0 and 0.2 eV for It. Overlapped with these changes, a slow decrease of both I0 and It, was also observed with a slope of 0.01 eV per day. For water, the trends were mostly similar with O2, except that (1) the first exposure to water vapor showed small and large changes in I0 (0.03 eV increase) and It (0.4 eV decrease) and (2) the amplitudes of the mostly reversible change of I0 (0.3 eV) and It (0.05 eV) were much larger and smaller than those for O2, respectively. A long-term decrease was also observed with a slope of 0.04 eV per day. These results indicate that the atmospheric effect by ambient air on I is mainly caused by water vapor, although oxygen also makes significant contribution. Since the observed trends are rather complex, there seem to be multiple factors affecting I, which is the energy difference between the vacuum level and the highest occupied molecular orbita. Parabens, esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid, are commonly used as antimicrobial preservatives in cosmetics and personal care products. Although several studies report exposure of humans to parabens in Western countries, little is known about exposure of humans to parabens in Asian countries. In this study, we determined concentrations of six parabens in spot urine samples collected from nine countries and estimated daily intakes (DI) and potential health risks of parabens. Ethyl-paraben, methyl-paraben, and propyl-paraben were detected frequently at 100, 98.0, and 80.3%, respectively, with representative median concentrations of 0.68, 7.02, and 1.21 ng/mL, respectively, for all nine countries. Urine samples from females (total median concentration: 32.3 ng/mL) contained significantly higher concentrations of parabens than did those from males (5.46 ng/mL). Urine samples from Korea (total median paraben concentration: 227 ng/mL) had the highest concentrations, which were one to two orders of magnitude higher than those found in other countries (3.67–29.1 ng/mL). The estimated DI of parabens (on the basis of concentrations measured in urine) varied widely, and several samples had propyl-paraben exposures above the acceptable DI. Antimicrobials including parabens, triclosan, and triclocarban have endocrine disrupting properties. Among 501 male partners of couples planning to become pregnant, preconception urinary biomarkers of parabens, triclosan and triclocarban exposure were quantified in spot urine samples. Men also provided two fresh semen samples collected approximately one month to undergo 24-h semen quality analysis. Linear mixed-effects models, adjusted for creatinine, race, age and body mass index, were utilized to assess the relationship between log transformed chemical concentrations rescaled by their standard deviations and semen parameters. Methyl, ethyl and butyl parabens, were associated with diminished sperm count and several sperm motility parameters. Hydroxylated paraben metabolites and triclosan were significantly positively associated with select semen quality parameters. Overall, our findings suggest that specific urinary parabens found in consumer goods (methyl, ethyl and butyl parabens) may adversely impact sperm quality parameters among reproductive-age male partners of couples trying for pregnancy. To prevent many problems caused by ice adhesion, its control technology is required. To settle this technology, obtaining the correct ice adhesion force is a key point. However, ice adhesion forces obtained by current conventional methods are apparent values including a force breaking ice. Thus, authors developed a method to measure correct ice adhesion force and accurate ice diameter in a nano-scale by SPM and both for copper were measured. To construct a database to store the correct ice adhesion forces and diameters for various metals, first, the ice adhesion forces and the ice diameters for aluminum, titanium, carbon steel, and stainless steel are measured at −5°C by the SPM. Additionally, to easily compare our results with other works, shearing stresses of the metals are also given by the ice adhesion forces and ice adhesion areas. Abstract: Frosting to a cooling solid surface is often unavoidable and is severe problems. Thus, in order to control the frosting, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism of frosting, both scientifically and technologically. Furthermore, when investigating this mechanism, knowing how frost crystals start to form and grow is very important, therefore, frosting from generation to primary growth stage must be clarified. Since frost crystals dimensions are very small in their generation and primary growth stage, it is essential to conduct these investigations at the micro scale level. In this study, using a scanning probe microscope (SPM), frost crystals dimensions/distribution and scraping force of frost crystals, were measured under fixed surface temperatures, comparing influence of humidity with that of surface temperature via a method proposed by one of the authors. Then, correlations among the above frost crystals dimensions/distribution and scraping force were clarified, comparing with influence of cooling solid surface temperature. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We present an investigation of the interface between organic semiconductor films and metal substrates (organic/metal interface) using photoelectron yield spectroscopy (PYS) as the probing technique. PYS studies were conducted on the pentacene/Au, copper phthalocyanine (CuPc)/Au, and perfluorinated zinc phthalocyanine (F16ZnPc)/Au, and the results were compared with literature results obtained using conventional ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). PYS is advantageous for probing the electronic structure of the organic/metal interface because of the relatively long mean free path of photoexcited electrons with very low kinetic energy in PYS, which enables the detection of the photoelectrons from the metal substrate buried deep in the organic film. We demonstrate herein that the use of PYS reduces the significance of the final state effect of the electronic density surrounding the photohole at the organic molecule generated after the photoemission; this effect is known as the electric polarization effect. Although this effect has a significant influence on the results obtained using conventional UPS, the reduced influence of the final state effect in PYS makes it possible to construct an energy level diagram at the organic/metal interface with greater accuracy than can be achieved with UPS. In addition, a novel mechanism of the photoelectron detection for PYS enables us to apply PYS to very thick organic films, and therefore, PYS provides a reliable value of ionization energy for organic films without the influence of the substrate. Because the interface electronic structure has a significant influence on the carrier injection properties of organic devices, the increased reliability of the information obtained by PYS will render it very useful for the improvement of device performance as well for understanding their operation principles. Human exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has received considerable attention over the last three decades. However, little is known about the influence of co-exposure to multiple EDCs on effect-biomarkers such as oxidative stress in Brazilian children. In this study, concentrations of 40 EDCs were determined in urine samples collected from 300 Brazilian children of ages 6–14 years and data were analyzed by advanced data mining techniques. Oxidative DNA damage was evaluated from the urinary concentrations of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8OHDG). Fourteen EDCs, including bisphenol A (BPA), methyl paraben (MeP), ethyl paraben (EtP), propyl paraben (PrP), 3,4-dihydroxy benzoic acid (3,4-DHB), methyl-protocatechuic acid (OH-MeP), ethyl-protocatechuic acid (OH-EtP), triclosan (TCS), triclocarban (TCC), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP3), 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone (BP1), bisphenol A bis(2,3-dihydroxypropyl) glycidyl ether (BADGE·2H 2 O), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), and 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP) were found in >50% of the urine samples analyzed. The highest geometric mean concentrations were found for MeP (43.1 ng/mL), PrP (3.12 ng/mL), 3,4-DHB (42.2 ng/mL), TCS (8.26 ng/mL), BP3 (3.71 ng/mL), and BP1 (4.85 ng/mL), and exposures to most of which were associated with personal care product (PCP) use. Statistically significant associations were found between urinary concentrations of 8OHDG and BPA, MeP, 3,4-DHB, OH-MeP, OH-EtP, TCS, BP3, 2,4-DCP, and 2,5-DCP. After clustering the data on the basis of i) 14 EDCs (exposure levels), ii) demography (age, gender and geographic location), and iii) 8OHDG (effect), two distinct clusters of samples were identified. 8OHDG concentration was the most critical parameter that differentiated the two clusters, followed by OH-EtP. When 8OHDG was removed from the dataset, predictability of exposure variables increased in the order of: OH-EtP > OH-MeP > 3,4-DHB > BPA > 2,4-DCP > MeP > TCS > EtP > BP1 > 2,5-DCP. Our results showed that co-exposure to OH-EtP, OH-MeP, 3,4-DHB, BPA, 2,4-DCP, MeP, TCS, EtP, BP1, and 2,5-DCP was associated with DNA damage in children. This is the first study to report exposure of Brazilian children to a wide range of EDCs and the data mining approach further strengthened our findings of chemical co-exposures and biomarkers of effect. Background and objective Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), have been associated with adverse bone, and metabolic changes in adults. However association of PFASs with bone health in children is understudied. Considering their role as endocrine disruptors, we examined relationships of four PFASs with bone health in children. Methods In a cross sectional pilot study, 48 obese children aged 8–12 years were enrolled from Dayton's Children Hospital, Ohio. Anthropometric, clinical and biochemical assessments of serum were completed. Serum PFASs were measured by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS. In a subset of 23 children, bone health parameters were measured using calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS). Results While PFASs exposure was associated with a consistent negative relationship with bone health parameters, among four PFASs tested, only PFNA showed a significant negative relationship with bone parameter (β [95% CI], = − 72.7 [− 126.0, − 19.6], p = .010). PFNA was also associated with raised systolic blood pressure (p = .008), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; p < .001), and total cholesterol (TC; p = .014). In addition, both PFOA and PFOS predicted elevation in LDL-C, and PFOA predicted increased TC, as well. In this analysis, PFASs were not strongly related to thyroid hormones, 25-hydroxy vitamin D, liver enzymes, or glucose homeostasis. Triclosan (TCS) and Triclocarban (TCC) are widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in personal care products (PCPs). Because of their potential for endocrine disrupting effects, human exposure to these chemicals is a concern. Biomonitoring studies of human exposure to TCS and TCC have shown widespread exposure of populations in western European countries and the USA. However, exposure to TCC and TCS by populations in Asian countries is less well known. In this study, concentrations of TCS and TCC were determined in human urine collected from seven Asian countries (China, India, Korea, Kuwait, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam), and Greece and the USA. A total of 430 urine samples were analyzed for TCS and TCC, of which 355 (83%) and 82 (19%), respectively, contained measurable levels of these chemicals. The overall geometric mean [GM] concentrations of TCS and TCC, were 1.36 and 0.03 ng/mL, respectively. The highest mean concentration of TCS was found in urine from China (100 ng/mL) and the lowest concentration was found in urine from Vietnam (2.34 ng/mL). We also analyzed urinary 8-OHdG, a marker of oxidative stress, to elucidate the association with TCS and TCC levels for samples from Saudi Arabia (n=130) and a positive correlation between Ln-transformed TCC levels and 8-OHdG was found, although this was not statistically significant. BACKGROUND: Human exposure to parabens and other antimicrobial chemicals is continual and pervasive. The hormone-disrupting properties of these environmental chemicals may adversely affect human reproduction. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to prospectively assess couples' urinary concentrations of antimicrobial chemicals in the context of fecundity, measured as time to pregnancy (TTP). METHODS: In a prospective cohort of 501 couples, we examined preconception urinary chemical concentrations of parabens, triclosan and triclorcarban in relation to TTP; chemical concentrations were modeled both continuously and in quartiles. Cox's proportional odds models for discrete survival time were used to estimate fecundability odds ratios (FORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusting for a priori-defined confounders. In light of TTP being a couple-dependent outcome, both partner and couple-based exposure models were analyzed. In all models, FOR estimates < 1.0 denote diminished fecundity (longer TTP). RESULTS: Overall, 347 (69%) couples became pregnant. The highest quartile of female urinary methyl paraben (MP) concentrations relative to the lowest reflected a 34% reduction in fecundity (aFOR = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.45, 0.97) and remained so when accounting for couples' concentrations (aFOR = 0.63; 95% CI: 0.41, 0.96). Similar associations were observed between ethyl paraben (EP) and couple fecundity for both partner and couple-based models (p-trend = 0.02 and p-trend = 0.05, respectively). No associations were observed with couple fecundity when chemicals were modeled continuously. CONCLUSIONS: Higher quartiles of preconception urinary concentrations of MP and EP among female partners were associated with reduced couple fecundity in partner-specific and couple-based exposure models. Radionuclide concentrations in wharf roaches inhabiting coastal areas of Honshu, Japan, were investigated in October 2011 and June 2012. Relative high concentrations of Ag (2.1-127 Bq kg-wet), Cs (2.6-61 Bq kg-wet), and Cs (3.5-92 Bq kg-wet) were detected in specimens from the eastern Honshu areas. Significantly lower Cs concentrations (0.7-1.6 Bq kg-wet) were detected in specimens from western and northern Honshu. The decay-corrected Cs concentration was significantly inversely correlated with the distance from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. Abstract: It is important to know a real ice adhesion force on a cooling solid surface. When an ice adhesion force is measured by giving a shearing force at the interface between the solid surface and ice, there is a possibility that a measured ice adhesion force is an apparent value including a force that destroys ice due to unevenness of the surface. Thus, to measure the ice adhesion force without influence of the surface unevenness, one of the authors developed a method for measuring the ice adhesion force on the nano scale by using a scanning probe microscope. In this paper, ice adhesion forces to copper oxide and hard glass test plates were measured at −5 °C on the nano scale by this method, and the real ice adhesion forces could be measured. Moreover, the representative value of proper shearing stresses obtained by real ice adhesion forces divided each ice adhesion area was given. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Exposure to multiple pesticides in daily life has become an important public health concern. However, the combined effects of pesticide mixtures have not been fully elucidated by the conventional toxicological testing used for individual chemicals. Grouping of chemicals by mode of action using common key events (KEs) in the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) as endpoints could be applied for efficient risk assessment of combined exposure to multiple chemicals. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether exposure to multiple pesticides has synergistic neurotoxic effects on mammalian nervous systems. According to the AOP-based approach, we evaluated the effects of 10 current-use pesticides (4 neonicotinoids, 4 pyrethroids and 2 phenylpyrazoles) on the common KEs in AOPs for neurotoxicity, such as KEs involving mitochondrial and proteolytic functions, in a mammalian neuronal cell model. Our data showed that several pyrethroids and phenylpyrazoles partly shared the effects on several common KEs, including decreases in mitochondrial membrane potential and proteasome activity and increases in autophagy activity. Furthermore, we also found that combined exposure to a type-I pyrethroid permethrin or a type-II pyrethroid deltamethrin and the phenylpyrazole fipronil decreased the cell viability and the benchmark doses much more than either single exposure, indicating that the pair exhibited synergistic effects, since the combination indexes were less than 1. These findings revealed that novel pairs of different classes of pesticides with similar effects on common KEs exhibited synergistic neurotoxicity and provide new insights into the risk assessment of combined exposure to multiple chemicals. Research pertaining to exposure of humans to per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) has received considerable public and regulatory attention in recent years. Although several studies have reported exposure to PFASs by populations in North America and western Europe, such information is still scarce in Latin America, including Brazil. In this study, concentrations of thirteen PFASs were determined in whole blood collected during the second trimester from 252 pregnant Brazilian women. This is a nested case-control study within the Brazilian Ribeirao Preto and Sao Luiz Birth Cohort Study (BRISA) with selected birth outcomes cases (n = 63) and matched controls (n = 189). PFASs concentrations were associated with conditions including preeclampsia, birth weight (BW), preterm birth, and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Among PFASs measured, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was found at the highest concentration (range: 1.06–106 ng mL−1 with a median value of 3.41 ng mL−1) which was followed by perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, range: 0.11–2.77 ng mL−1 with a median value of 0.20 ng mL−1). A significant positive association of PFOS and PFOA concentrations with fetal growth restriction (p < 0.05) was found. Pollution by microplastics in aquatic ecosystems is a worldwide problem, and the role of microplastics as vectors of pollutants has been a concern. Although small microplastics are thought to have a greater effect than large microplastics as vectors of pollutants, the impact of the size of microplastics on their ability to serve as vectors of pollutants has not been quantified. In this study, we conducted the 14-day experiment (7 days of exposure and 7 days of depuration) with polystyrene microplastics (2-μm or 10-μm diameter) and anthracene. On the last day of the exposure period, the concentration of anthracene in the muscle of Java medaka exposed to both anthracene and 2-μm polystyrene microplastics was the highest (47.4 ± 15.2 μg/g-muscle) of any group, followed by the group exposed to both anthracene and 10-μm polystyrene microplastics (23.0 ± 4.2 μg/g-muscle) and the group exposed to only anthracene (11.2 ± 2.2 μg/g-muscle). These results demonstrated that the size of microplastics was a critical determinant of their ability to serve as vectors of anthracene. The concentrations of anthracene and fine microplastics in the environment are sufficiently low that the effect of microplastics as vectors of anthracene may be observed only under experimental conditions that are unlikely to occur in the present environment. However, because pollution by plastics is expected to become more serious in the future, careful thought and proactive action will be needed to ensure that the impact of microplastics as vectors of pollutants does not become demonstrable under future environmental conditions. COVID-19 has negatively impacted the mental health of people in general,1, 2 particularly that of workers treating COVID-19 on the front lines.3, 4 At our psychiatric hospital, COVID-19 was diagnosed in five inpatients and three workers, and each patient with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis was transferred to the designated medical institution for COVID-19, but the ward where other patients had had close contact with COVID-19 patients remained as the COVID-19 ward. Workers in close contact with COVID-19 patients were directed to stay at home, while staff from other wards took over their duties in the COVID-19 ward. There was significant interaction between the presence of housemates and close contact with COVID-19 patients for the (a) Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) score and the (b) Patient Health Qestionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score (P = 0.042 and P = 0.031, respectively). Abstract Background Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are linked with insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes (T2D) in the general population. However, their associations with gestational diabetes (GDM) are inconsistent. Objective We prospectively evaluated the associations of POPs measured in early pregnancy with GDM risk. We also assessed whether pre-pregnancy BMI (ppBMI) and family history of T2D modify this risk. Methods In NICHD Fetal Growth Study, Singletons, we measured plasma concentration of 76 POPs, including 11 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 9 polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), 44 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and 11 per -and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) among 2334 healthy non-obese women at 8–13 weeks of gestation. GDM was diagnosed by Carpenter and Coustan criteria. We constructed chemical networks using a weighted-correlation algorithm and examined the associations of individual chemical and chemical networks with GDM using multivariate Poisson regression with robust variance. Results Higher concentrations of PCBs with six or more chlorine atoms were associated with increased risk of GDM in the overall cohort (risk ratios [RRs] range: 1.08–1.13 per 1-standard deviation [SD] increment) and among women with a family history of T2D (RRs range: 1.08–1.48 per 1-SD increment) or normal ppBMI (RRs range: 1.08–1.22 per 1-SD increment). Similar associations were observed for the chemical network comprised of PCBs with ≥6 chlorine atoms and the summary measure of total PCBs and non-dioxin like PCBs (138, 153, 170, 180). Furthermore, four PFAS congeners - perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), and perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoDA) - showed significant positive associations with GDM among women with a family history of T2D (RRs range:1.22–3.18 per 1-SD increment), whereas BDE47 and BDE153 showed significant positive associations among women without a family history of T2D. Conclusions Environmentally relevant levels of heavily chlorinated PCBs and some PFAS and PBDEs were positively associated with GDM with suggestive effect modifications by family history of T2D and body adiposity status. Abstract Background Some non-persistent endocrine disruptors (EDCs) are adversely associated with semen quality and few studies have measured those EDCs in seminal plasma. Objective To find an association between EDCs in seminal plasma and semen quality parameters. Methods Five chemical classes of non-persistent EDCs were quantified in seminal plasma from 339 male partners who participated in a prospective pregnancy study. Bisphenols, benzophenone UV-filters, antimicrobials and phthalate diesters and their monoester metabolites were measured using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Semen samples underwent next day analysis using a standardized protocol for the quantification of 35 endpoints. Linear mixed-effects models of EDCs that were log transformed and rescaled by their standard deviations or dichotomized at the 75th percentile for each exposure and outcomes with covariate adjustment were performed. EDCs in seminal plasma were also assessed relative to clinical reference values of semen quality endpoints using logistic regression or generalized estimating equations. Results The most consistent findings supporting adverse associations between seminal EDCs and semen quality were observed for some phthalate metabolites. For example, seminal plasma mono-ethyl, mono-n-butyl, mono-2-isobutyl and mono-benzyl phthalate concentrations were associated with decreased odds of having semen volume above clinical reference values (mEP: aOR=0.46; 95%CI= 0.32, 0.66; mBP: aOR=0.40; 95%CI= 0.28, 0.57; miBP: aOR=0.39; 95%CI= 0.27, 0.56), and mBzP: aOR= 0.34; 95%CI= 0.24, 0.49). Conclusions Environmentally relevant concentrations of specific phthalates in seminal plasma were associated with diminished semen volume, sperm motility, viability, and morphological alterations in sperm heads such that semen volume and sperm viability fall below reference values. Abstract Background Intrauterine exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been equivocally associated with birth weight, length and head circumference with limited attention to anthropometric endpoints such as umbilical circumference and limb lengths. Objective To explore 76 prenatal maternal plasma EDC concentrations in a healthy obstetric cohort and 7 neonatal anthropometric endpoints by maternal race/ethnicity. Methods The study cohort comprised 2106 (564 White, 549 Black, 590 Hispanic, 403 Asian) healthy pregnant women recruited from 12 U.S. clinical sites between 2009 and 2012 who were followed through delivery. Neonates underwent standardized anthropometric assessment (weight, length, head and umbilical circumference, and mid- upper arm and thigh length). Plasma EDC concentrations were quantified using high resolution gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. EDCs were log-transformed and rescaled by their deviations (SD) when modeled relative to neonatal endpoints using linear regression adjusting for age, education, pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), serum cotinine, serum lipids for lipophilic chemicals, and a race/ethnicity interaction term; p-values had false discovery rate correction (<0.05). Results The cohort comprised women aged 28 (SD = 5) years with normal BMIs (23.6 kg/m2, SD = 3). Maternal EDC concentrations varied by self-identified race/ethnicity and neonatal outcomes, though no specific EDC was consistently associated with neonatal anthropometric outcomes across racial/ethnic groups. For the overall cohort, perfluorooctanoic acid was negatively associated with birth length per SD increase in concentration (β = −0.23 cm; 95% CI −0.35, −0.10), while perfluorohexanesulfonic acid was negatively associated with umbilical circumference (β = −0.26 cm; 95% CI −0.40, −0.13), perfluorodecanoic acid with arm length (−0.09 cm; 95% CI −0.14, −0.04), and PCBs congeners 118/106 (−0.12 cm; 95% CI −0.20, −0.04) and 146/161 (−0.14 cm; 95% CI −0.23, −0.05) with thigh length, as were 7 other poly-and-perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs). Conclusions Among healthy pregnant women with low risk antenatal profiles and relatively low EDC concentrations, reductions in umbilical circumference and bone lengths may be a sensitive marker of intrauterine EDC exposure, particularly for PFAS. Growing evidence supports the importance of men's exposure to non-persistent endocrine disruptors (EDCs) and couple fecundability, as measured by time-to-pregnancy (TTP). This evolving literature contrasts with the largely equivocal findings reported for women's exposures and fecundity. While most evidence relies upon urinary concentrations, quantification of EDCs in seminal plasma may be more informative about potential toxicity arising within the testes. We analyzed 5 chemical classes of non-persistent EDCs in seminal plasma for 339 male partners of couples who were recruited prior to conception and who were followed daily until pregnant or after one year of trying. Benzophenones, bisphenols, parabens, and phthalate metabolites and phthalate diesters were measured using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) except for phthalate diesters, which were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Cox regression with discrete-time was used to estimate fecundability odds ratios (FORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each chemical to estimate the probability of pregnancy. While most EDCs were detected in seminal plasma, concentrations were lower than urinary concentrations previously analyzed for the cohort. None of the EDCs were significantly associated with fecundability even after covariate adjustment, though benzophenones consistently yielded FORs <1.0 (ranging from 0.72 to 0.91) in couple-adjusted models suggestive of diminished fecundity (longer TTP). The findings underscore that a range of EDCs can be quantified in seminal plasma, but the lower concentrations may require a large cohort for assessing couple fecundability, as well as the need to consider other fecundity outcomes such as semen quality. Background Large amounts of various chemical contaminants, including perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), were released at the time of the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster. Thousands of children who lived and/or attended school near the disaster site were exposed to these substances but few studies have examined the possible consequences related to these exposures. Objectives To examine the relationship of PFASs serum levels with cardiometabolic profile in children and adolescents enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Registry (WTCHR) and a matched comparison group. Methods We evaluated WTCHR enrollees who resided in New York City and were born between September 11, 1993 and September 10, 2001, and a matched comparison group consisting of individuals who were ineligible for WTCHR participation upon distance of their home, school or work from the WTC and lack of participation in rescue and recovery activities. Matching was based on date of birth, sex, race, ethnicity, and income. We assessed exposure to PFASs, as measured by serum levels and association with cardiometabolic profile as measured by arterial wall stiffness, body mass index, insulin resistance, fasting total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides. Results A total of 402 participants completed the study and serum samples were analyzed from 308 participants, 123 in the WTCHR group and 185 in the comparison group. In multivariable regression analysis, after adjusting for relevant confounders, we observed a significant, positive association of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) with triglycerides (beta coefficient = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.27, 15.1% change), total cholesterol (beta coefficient = 0.09, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.14, 9.2% change), and LDL cholesterol (beta coefficient = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.19, 11.5% change). Perfluorohexanesulfonic acid levels were associated with decreased insulin resistance (beta coefficient = − 0.09, 95% CI: − 0.18, − 0.003, − 8.6% change); PFOA and perfluorononanoic acid were associated with increased brachial artery distensibility. Conclusions This research adds to our knowledge of the physical health impacts in a large group of children exposed to the WTC disaster. Abnormal lipid levels in young adults might be an early marker of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases and our findings highlight the importance of conducting longitudinal studies in this population. Although most exposures to chlorpyrifos (CPF) in natural flowing waters are brief and episodic, there have been a few reports of the persistence of abnormal fish behaviors caused by such acute exposure. The present study focused on the behavioral and biochemical responses of Japanese medaka ( Oryzias latipes ) to acute, sublethal exposure to CPF, as well as the persistence of the effects during a 3-week recovery test in CPF-free water. The medaka became hyperactive and exhibited an elevated anxiety state after a 4-day exposure to 0.024 mg/L of CPF, but they recovered from these abnormal behavioral responses within 7 days of recovery treatment. In contrast, persistent impacts on some startle responses to a sudden stimulation (induced by a ball drop) were observed in medaka exposed to CPF. The reaction latency did not change immediately after the 4-day exposure, but was significantly prolonged by as much as 21 days after the termination of exposure. The post-stimulus swimming distance within 5 s significantly decreased on the day immediately after the 4-day exposure, but it significantly increased after 7 days of recovery treatment. The activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the brains of medaka was significantly inhibited on the day immediately after the 4-day exposure, but it returned to 80% and 110% of that in control fish on days 7 and 21 of the recovery period, respectively. However, AChE activities in the eyes of exposed medaka were persistently inhibited and declined to 33%, 71%, and 72% of that in control fish on days 0 (immediately after the 4-day exposure), 7, and 21 of recovery, respectively. Correlation analysis suggested that the changes of AChE activities in the brains of medaka may underlie some of the observed acute behavioral changes, and the changes of AChE activities in the eyes may contribute to the persistence of the abnormalities in the reaction latency of the startle response. Our findings suggest that medaka need a long time to recover from acute, sublethal exposure to CPF, and the persistence of the behavioral abnormalities might affect their fitness in natural habitats. The World Trade Center (WTC) disaster released large amounts of various chemical substances into the environment, including perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Yet, no studies have examined exposures in children living or attending schools near the disaster site. We measured serum PFASs in WTC Health Registry (WTCHR) respondents who were ≤8 years of age on September 11, 2001 and a sociodemographically-matched comparison group. We also examined the relationship of PFASs levels with dust cloud exposure; home dust exposure, and with traumatic exposure, the latter to take into account differences related to possible mental health consequences and associated behavioral problems. Serum samples, collected between 2014 and 2016, were analyzed from 123 WTCHR participants and from 185 participants in the comparison group. In the WTCHR group, median perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) levels were 1.81 ng/mL and 3.72 ng/mL, respectively. Controlling for sex, caloric intake, race/ethnicity, and date of birth, significant increases among WTCHR participants compared with the matched comparison group were detected for perfluorohexanesulfonate (0.23 ng/mL increase or 0.24 log unit increase, p=0.006); PFOS (0.86 ng/mL increase or 0.16 log unit increase, p=0.011); PFOA (0.35 ng/mL increase or 0.18 log unit increase, p<0.001); perfluorononanoic acid (0.12 ng/mL increase or 0.17 log unit increase, p=0.003); perfluorodecanoic acid (0.06 ng/mL increase or 0.42 log unit increase, p<0.001); and perfluoroundecanoic acid (0.03 ng/mL increase or 0.32 log unit increase, p=0.019). Stronger associations were identified for home dust exposures and traumatic exposures than dust cloud. These findings highlight the importance of conducting longitudinal studies in this population to assess possible cardiometabolic and renal consequences related to these exposures. Benzo[ c ]phenanthrene (BcP) is a highly toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) found throughout the environment. In fish, it is metabolized to 3-hydroxybenzo[ c ]phenanthrene (3-OHBcP). In the present study, we observed the effects of 1 nM 3-OHBcP on the development and gene expression of Japanese medaka ( Oryzias latipes ) embryos. Embryos were nanoinjected with the chemical after fertilization. Survival, developmental stage, and heart rate of the embryos were observed, and gene expression differences were quantified by messenger RNA sequencing (mRNA-Seq). The exposure to 1 nM 3-OHBcP accelerated the development of medaka embryos on the 1st, 4th, and 6th days post fertilization (dpf), and increased heart rates significantly on the 5th dpf. Physical development differences of exposed medaka embryos were consistent with the gene expression profiles of the mRNA-Seq results for the 3rd dpf, which show that the expression of 780 genes differed significantly between the solvent control and 1 nM 3-OHBcP exposure groups. The obvious expression changes in the exposure group were found for genes involved in organ formation (eye, muscle, heart), energy supply (ATPase and ATP synthase), and stress-response (heat shock protein genes). The acceleration of development and increased heart rate, which were consistent with the changes in mRNA expression, suggested that 3-OHBcP affects the development of medaka embryos. Study Question: Is preconception urinary paracetamol (acetaminophen) associated with time-to-pregnancy (TTP)?Summary Answer: Higher urinary paracetamol concentrations among male partners were associated with a longer TTP.What Is Known Already: Paracetamol is a commonly used analgesic among women and men of all ages. As metabolites of select chemicals used in the manufacturing of polyurethane foam, dyes and various industrial products, as well as a common medicinal product, paracetamol and its primary metabolite p-aminophenol, are ubiquitous in the environment. Studies investigating the relationship between adult urinary concentrations of paracetamol and TTP are lacking.Study Design, Size, Duration: This prospective cohort included 501 couples discontinuing contraception for the purposes of attempting conception during the years 2005-2009 and residing in Michigan or Texas, USA.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: Total urinary paracetamol, its metabolite para-aminophenol (p-aminophenol), and a summary measure of both urinary biomarkers were quantified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with an electrospray triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS/MS). Female partners used the Clearblue® digital home test to confirm pregnancy. Cox's proportional odds models for discrete survival time were used to estimate fecundability odds ratios (FORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), urinary creatinine, preconception smoking status, race/ethnicity and household income. Models were further adjusted for hypothyroidism and hypertension as an attempt to account for possible indications of paracetamol medication use. FOR estimates <1.0 denote a longer TTP (diminished fecundity). Models were performed to examine urinary concentrations of paracetamol as a continuous and variable or categorized into quartiles. In light of TTP being a couple-dependent outcome, models were first performed for females and males, modeled separately, and then modeled for couples with each partner's concentrations being adjusted for the other.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: Among the 501 enrolled couples, 347 (69%) had an human chorionic gonadotrophin confirmed pregnancy. Urinary concentrations of paracetamol were lowest among females and males who achieved pregnancy and p-aminophenol concentrations were lowest among those not achieving pregnancy. Urinary paracetamol concentrations were higher among female than male partners (Median = 26.6 and 13.2 ng/ml, respectively; P < 0.0001). After adjustment for age, BMI, urinary creatinine, preconception smoking status, race/ethnicity and household income, the highest quartile of male urinary paracetamol was associated with a longer TTP [FOR = 0.67; 95% CI = (0.47, 0.95)]. This association remained after adjustment for chronic health conditions, hypothyroidism and hypertension and female partner's urinary paracetamol concentration [FOR = 0.65; 95% CI = (0.45, 0.94)]. No associations were observed between female or male partners' urinary concentrations of paracetamol or of its metabolite p-aminophenol when urinary concentrations were modeled continuously.Limitations, Reasons For Caution: Only a single spot urine was available for analysis despite the short-lived nature of paracetamol. Tributyltin-binding proteins (TBT-bps) are members of the fish lipocalins that were isolated from the blood of Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) and function in the binding and detoxification of TBT. In this study, we constructed a baculovirus-silkworm expression system and obtained recombinant TBT-bp2 (rTBT-bp2; 31.5 kDa) from the hemolymph of silkworm larvae injected with a recombinant baculovirus containing the TBT-bp2 gene. The binding potential of rTBT-bp2 was investigated and compared to that of the previously available recombinant TBT-bp1 (rTBT-bp1). Both rTBT-bp2 and rTBT-bp1 bound to DAUDA, a typical fluorescent ligand of lipocalins, with dissociation constants of 0.97 and 1.75 μM, respectively. The Hill coefficient value indicated that rTBT-bp2 may have multiple binding sites and strong negative cooperativity. These results suggest that the typical central cavity of lipocalins composed of eight specific β-sheets is conserved in rTBT-bp2, as it is in rTBT-bp1, although rTBT-bp2 has different effects than rTBT-bp1 in TBT binding. In a competition assay, rTBT-bp2 displayed exponential binding affinity to TBT with an inhibition constant of 0.29 μM, demonstrating that TBT binds to the central ligand pocket of rTBT-bp2. However, three fatty acids did not show any affinity to rTBT-bp2. Abstract: Ice adhesion to a cooling solid surface sometimes causes a major accident. While, recently, strong ice adhesion force is positively used to fix a workpiece on a table of machine tool during processing. Therefore, it is necessary to control ice adhesion force to the cooling solid surface. However, the control is indeed a nasty problem to handle. In this paper, as a control method of ice adhesion force to the cooling solid surface, a thin film made from a silane-coupler coated on the solid surface is investigated. The silane-coupler has an organic functional and alkoxyl groups, and the alkoxyl group is changed into a silanol group by hydrolysis. And it is expected that the silanol group can be linked with the slid surface through a hydrogen bonding, while ice adhesion force can be controlled by a characteristic of the organic functional group. And a possibility of control of ice adhesion force due to the thin film is investigated. The article presents a study on the growth potential of chattonella antiqua (C. antiqua) under laboratory condition. The study investigates the temporal variations of the maximum quantity provided by photosystem II and protein expressions of C. antiqua. Positive correlations between daily growth rate and Fv/Fm were observed despite the culture conditions. The result shows that 42 protein spots were expressed at various growth phases of C. antiqua.

Abstract: Since frosting to a cooling solid surface has caused many serious accidents accompanied by economic losses, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism of frosting to the cooling solid surface both scientifically and technologically. Thus, at first clarification of frosting from generation to primary stage of growth is very important. And considering the size of frost crystals until the primary stage, it is essential to investigate frost crystals in nano/micro scale field. In this paper, using a scanning probe microscope (SPM), frost crystals dimensions/distribution and scraping force of frost crystals were measured based on the method proposed by one of authors, under a fixed humidity varying cooling solid surface temperatures. We investigated the antioxidant capacity and peroxy radical scavenging activity of raw mantle tissue extract of the swordtip squid Loligo edulis at various freshness levels using the chemiluminescence method. The antioxidant capacity of the extract was highest at K value, which is an index for freshness of fish and shellfish, of 20–40% (P < 0.05). The antioxidant capacity decreased at K values of above 40%, and there were no significant difference among K value 40–60%, 60–80% and above 80% (P < 0.05). Among the ATP-related compounds in the extracts, the main compounds were AMP and hypoxanthine. The correlation between antioxidant capacity and the amount of hypoxanthine was high especially at K value of above 80%. However, the participation of ATP-related compounds in the total antioxidant capacity was low, though they have some antioxidant capacities. Present study is the first report to show the participation of ATP-related compounds on the antioxidant capacity of squid with deterioration. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS ATP-related compounds, which are included in fish and shellfish, are constituent factors of K value, which is important for a freshness index. We inspected the possibility of ATP-related compounds for the participation to antioxidant capacity that is one of important functions of the food. The result of this study newly showed the superiority of good freshness by clarifying that fresh squid has a higher antioxidant capacity. Freshness optimized both palatability and food hygiene. The participation of ATP-related compounds in the total antioxidant capacity was low. However, the contribution ratio was gradually increased. Prenatal exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is associated with increased attention problems in children, however, the effects of such exposure on children's brain structure and function have not been studied. Herein, we probed effects of prenatal ETS on children's cognitive control circuitry and behavior. Forty-one children (7–9 years) recruited from a prospective longitudinal birth cohort of non-smoking mothers completed structural and task-functional magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate effects of maternal ETS exposure, measured by maternal prenatal urinary cotinine. Attention problems and externalizing behaviors were measured by parent report on the Child Behavior Checklist. Compared to non-exposed children, exposed children had smaller left and right thalamic and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) volumes, with large effect sizes (p-FDR <.05, Cohen's D range from 0.79 to 1.07), and increased activation in IFG during the resolution of cognitive conflict measured with the Simon Spatial Incompatibility Task (38 voxels; peak t(25) = 5.25, p-FWE =.005). Reduced thalamic volume was associated with increased IFG activation and attention problems, reflecting poor cognitive control. Mediation analyses showed a trend toward left thalamic volume mediating the association between exposure and attention problems (p =.05). Our findings suggest that maternal ETS exposure during pregnancy has deleterious effects on the structure and function of cognitive control circuitry which in turn affects attentional capacity in school-age children. These findings are consistent with prior findings documenting the effects of active maternal smoking on chidlren's neurodevleoment, pointing to the neurotixicity of nicotine regardless of exposure pathway. • The influence of melatonin in age-related osteoporosis was investigated using naturally aged male mice. • As aging progressed in mice, the total bone density and strength of the femur bone decreased significantly. • Melatonin administration to aged mice improved both bone strength and trabecular bone density in the femoral bone. Melatonin has recently been found to be a possible new regulator of bone metabolism. However, the influence of melatonin in natural age-related osteoporosis has not been fully elucidated yet, although there have been some reports regarding postmenopausal osteoporosis with melatonin treatments. The present study investigated the effects of long-term melatonin administration during the aging process on bone metabolism. Using quantitative computed tomography methods, we found that the total bone density of both the femur metaphysis and diaphysis decreased significantly in 20-month-old male mice. In the metaphysis, both trabecular bone mass and Polar-Strength Strain Index (SSI), which is an index of bone strength, decreased significantly. Judging from bone histomorphometry analysis, trabecular bone in 20-month-old male mice decreases significantly with age and is small and sparse, as compared to that of 4-month-old male mice. Loss of trabecular bone is one possible cause of loss of bone strength in the femoral bone. In the metaphysis, the melatonin administration group had significantly higher trabecular bone density than the non-administration group. The Polar-SSI, cortical area, and periosteal circumference in the diaphysis was also significantly higher with melatonin treatments. Since the melatonin receptor, MT2, was detected in both osteoblasts and osteoclasts of the femoral bone of male mice, we expect that melatonin acts on osteoblasts and osteoclasts to maintain the bone strength of the diaphysis and metaphysis. Castleman's disease (CD) is a rare disorder characterized by a benign proliferation of lymphoid tissue. Most cases tend to present as a mediastinal mass. A few extrathoracic cases involving nodal and extranodal locations have previously been reported. To the best of our knowledge, however, only one case of CD of the kidney has been published in an English report. We herein report a rare case of CD presenting as a left renal tumor. A 70-year-old male was examined by computed tomography for a follow-up for colonic diverticulitis and a left renal mass measuring 2.0 cm in diameter was incidentally found. The patient underwent a left partial nephrectomy for a left renal mass and a histopathological analysis demonstrated the hyaline vascular type of CD. Based on our findings, CD should be included in the differential diagnosis of renal tumors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
