Abstract Kaempferol has an anti-inflammatory effect on rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the mechanism by which inflammatory reactions are relieved via pyroptosis is still unclear. In the present study, The bioinformatics technology was used to analyze the relationship between pyroptosis the hub genes and the downstream cytokines in RA from three the Gene Expression Omnibus (GSE12021, GSE1919 and GSE29746). Molecular docking analysis of kaempferol and caspase1 (CASP1) was executed with Autodock tools. RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RA-FLS) was used to explore the anti-inflammatory effects of kaempferol on RA via pyroptosis. Thirty-seven differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified from the three datasets, and the enrichment analysis was focused mainly on the chemokine signaling pathway. The difference in immune cell infiltration was focused on CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells, M1 macrophages, and M2 macrophages. The expression of CASP1 and caspase3 (CASP3) was higher in the RA group. CASP1 and CASP3 were positively correlated with cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Moreover, molecular docking revealed that kaempferol strongly interacts with CASP1. Kaempferol inhibited the proliferation and migration of RA-FLS in vitro. The expression of CASP1, CASP3, caspase5 (CASP4), caspase5 (CASP5), gasdermin D (GSDMD), N-terminal domain of gasdermin D (GSDMDNT), IL-1β, and cytokines interleukin-18 (IL-18) were significantly affected by kaempferol. Kaempferol alleviated RA-FLS membrane disruption, and it blocked CASP1 to alleviate RA via pyroptosis. The present study demonstrated that kaempferol binds to CASP1 and affects pyroptosis in RA, thereby serving as an anti-immunotherapy strategy.

The hydrodynamic coefficients of underwater robots can be used to evaluate their maneuverability and motion stability and to design motion controllers, thereby reducing experimental time and costs. In this paper, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) with a negative-lift profile is designed. The spatially constrained motion method, combined with neural networks, is utilized to identify all the hydrodynamic coefficients in the standard hydrodynamic equations of the AUV. Subsequently, based on the goodness-of-fit, the significance of the hydrodynamic coefficients is evaluated to yield a simplified hydrodynamic equation. Given the cost constraints, it was not feasible to obtain precise experimental data on hydrodynamic coefficients to validate the accuracy of the CFD calculation method. Therefore, the hydrodynamic coefficients were used to construct a dynamic model for the AUV, and an MPC controller was designed based on this model. Finally, simulations and pool tests were conducted on the AUV, and a comparative analysis of the simulation results with the pool test results revealed that although there were certain errors in the calculation of the hydrodynamic coefficients, the controller constructed within this margin of error was still capable of effectively controlling the AUV. This fully demonstrates the feasibility and applicability of using CFD methods to calculate hydrodynamic coefficients and establishing model predictive control methods based on these coefficients in practical applications.

Perennial rice has recently garnered global attention due to its potential to save on seeds and labor costs and its high production efficiency. The “mid-season rice–ratoon forage” mode is a new planting system that has emerged in recent years. However, detailed information is still lacking on the regenerative characteristics, grain and ratoon forage yields, and forage nutrient content of perennial rice under different planting densities, nitrogen (N) rates, stubble heights, and water management practices. Four experiments with perennial rice were conducted in Sichuan Province, Southwest China, from 2017 to 2022. The results show that the rice grain and ratoon forage yields were significantly affected by year, planting density, and N. The grain yield was 28.18% and 60.81% lower in 2018F and 2019F, respectively, than in 2017F; similarly, the ratoon forage yield was 29.01% and 52.74% lower in 2018S and 2019S, respectively, than in 2017S. The low grain yield was mainly associated with lower numbers of spikelets per panicle and panicles per m2, which resulted from a lower regrowth rate, and the low ratoon forage yield was mainly attributed to the lower regrowth rate. The rice grain and ratoon forage yields increased with an increase in the N rate and planting density. The ratoon forage was found to be rich in crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients. Moreover, the content of these nutrients increased significantly with an increase in the N rate. The regrowth rate and maximum tillers showed trends of first increasing and then decreasing with an increase in the stubble height under dry and wet alternation irrigation during the winter season. When the relative soil moisture decreased to below 80% during the winter season, the regrowth rate and seedling development index could reach more than 99% and 84%, respectively. Our results suggest that integrating N, water, and other management practices (including the combination of a 150 kg ha−1 N rate, 18.0 hills per m2, 10–20 cm rice stubble height, and alternating dry and wet irrigation during the winter season) is a feasible approach for achieving high grain and ratoon forage yields in perennial rice systems.

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is used as a traditional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, it can cause serious adverse reactions, including hyperpigmentation of the skin and bull’s-eye macular lesions. Here, we present a case of HCQ-induced hyperpigmentation of the skin and bull’s-eye macular lesions in a patient who received HCQ for RA. A 65-year-old female patient developed blurred vision and hyperpigmentation of multiple areas of skin over the body for one month after 3 years of HCQ treatment for RA. Based on clinical presentation, ophthalmological examination and dermatopathological biopsy, a diagnosis of drug-induced cutaneous hyperpigmentation and bullous maculopathy of the right eye was made. After discontinuation of HCQ and treatment with iguratimod tablets, the hyperpigmentation of the patient ‘s skin was gradually reduced, and the symptoms of blurred vision were not significantly improved. We also reviewed the available literature on HCQ-induced cutaneous hyperpigmentation and bull’s-eye macular lesions and described the clinical features of HCQ-induced cutaneous hyperpigmentation and bull’s-eye macular lesions. In conclusion, clinicians should be aware of early cutaneous symptoms and HCQ-associated ophthalmotoxicity in patients with rheumatic diseases on HCQ sulphate and should actively monitor patients, have them undergo regular ophthalmological examinations and give appropriate treatment to prevent exacerbation of symptoms.

Sichuan Province is the primary region of ratoon rice production in China. This review summarizes the research progress of theories and technologies relating to the efficient cultivation of high-yielding ratoon rice based on the following: (1) ratoon rice planting area in Sichuan can be divided into three climatic zones based on the thermal energy availability, i.e. highly suitable, suitable, and sub-suitable zones; (2) grain yield in the ratoon season in Sichuan is 1.80–3.90 ​t ​ha−1 lower than that in southeastern and central China. The lower ratoon season yield in Sichuan was associated with fewer panicles m−2 and spikelets panicle−1; (3) the effects of rice cultivars selection, optimal nitrogen fertilizer and water management, timely harvest of the main crop, suitable rice stubble height, and sheath blight control on improving the ratooning ability of rice cultivars were examined; (4) factors restricting ratoon rice production in Sichuan include unstable ratoon rice yields, lack of suitable rice cultivars as simplified cultivating for ratoon rice, lack of high-efficiency and specialized rice harvester for ratoon rice, large yield gap between demonstration area and farmer’ paddy fields, and rolling damage from mechanical harvesting of main crop; and (5) new ratoon rice technologies relating to future development trends in Sichuan are clarified, including simplified cultivation techniques, integration of agricultural machinery and agronomy techniques, screening high-efficiency and specialized rice harvester, and desirable traits for breeding rice cultivars with strong ratooning ability and suitable growth duration in ratoon rice system.

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), as primary platforms, have significantly contributed to underwater surveys in scientific and military fields. Enhancing the maneuverability of autonomous underwater vehicles is crucial to their development. This study presents a novel vectored thruster and an optimized blade design approach to meet the design requirements of a specially shaped AUV. Determining the ideal blade characteristics involves selecting a maximum diameter of 0.18 m and configuring the number of blades to be four. Furthermore, the blades of the AUV were set to rotate at a speed of 1400 revolutions per minute (RPM). The kinematics of the thrust-vectoring mechanism was theoretically analyzed. A propulsive force test of the vectored thruster with ductless and ducted propellers was performed to evaluate its performance. A ductless propeller without an annular wing had a higher propulsive efficiency with a maximum thrust of 115 N. Open-loop control was applied to an AUV in a water tank, exhibiting a maximum velocity of 0.98 m/s and a pitch angle of 53°. The maximum rate of heading angle was 14.26°/s. The test results demonstrate that the specially designed thrust-vectoring mechanism notably enhances the effectiveness of AUVs at low forward speeds. In addition, tests conducted in offshore waters for depth and heading control validated the vectored thruster’s capability to fulfill the AUV’s motion control requirements.

Enhancing yield and achieving environmental goals represent challenges for the future of agriculture. Rational nitrogen (N) management is one of the most promising ways to meet this challenge. However, complicated nitrogen management strategies and considerable input requirements still exist in rice–ratoon rice production. To address this issue, field experiments were conducted with two main high-yield rice crop genotypes and five fertilization treatments at six sites in Southwest China from 2018 to 2020. The results showed the following: (1) the yield of the main rice crop was extremely significantly affected by the year, location, and fertilization, but not by genotype; (2) the yield of the ratoon rice was extremely significantly affected by year, genotype, location, and fertilization; and (3) the total plant N content (TPN) and leaf SPAD value at the full heading stage of the main crop were significantly positively correlated with the total soil N content (TSN) and soil available N (SAN) content of the basic soil. The highly efficient N application rate of grain- and bud-promoting fertilizer for ratoon rice was 60–120 kg ha−1. The TSN, SAN, TPN, and SPAD values higher than 0.247 kg N kg−1, 298 mg N kg−1, 2.159 kg N kg−1, and 49.94 were, respectively, considered the reference values when not applying grain- and bud-promoting fertilizer. A regression equation was established to predict the amount of high-efficiency grain- and bud-promoting fertilizer based on the TSN and SPAD. Overall, the yield of rice–ratoon rice was significantly affected by year, genotype, location, fertilization, and their interactions. The use of the predicted grain- and bud-promoting fertilizer regression equation can achieve high yields under simplified and reduced N input practices in the rice–ratoon rice systems.

Comprehensive vegetation surveys are crucial for species selection and layout during the restoration of degraded island ecosystems. However, due to the poor accessibility of uninhabited islands, traditional quadrat surveys are time-consuming and labor-intensive, and it is challenging to fully identify the specific species and their spatial distributions. With miniaturized sensors and strong accessibility, high spatial and temporal resolution, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been extensively implemented for vegetation surveys. By collecting UAVs multispectral images and conducting field quadrat surveys on Anyu Island, we employ four machine learning models, namely Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF) and Multiple Classifier Systems (MCS). We aim to identify the dominant species and analyze their spatial distributions according to spectral characteristics, vegetation index, topographic factors, texture features, and canopy heights. The results indicate that SVM model achieves the highest (88.55%) overall accuracy (OA) (kappa coefficient = 0.87), while MCS model does not significantly improve it as expected. Acacia confusa has the highest OA among 7 dominant species, reaching 97.67%. Besides the spectral characteristics, the inclusion of topographic factors and texture features in the SVM model can significantly improve the OA of dominant species. By contrast, the vegetation index, particularly the canopy height even reduces it. The dominant species exhibit significant zonal distributions with distance from the coastline on the Anyu Island (p < 0.001). Our study provides an effective and universal path to identify and map the dominant species and is helpful to manage and restore the degraded vegetation on uninhabited islands.

Circular RNA (circRNA) molecules are noncoding RNAs with ring-like structures formed by covalent bonds and are characterized by no 5′caps or 3′polyadenylated tails. Increasing evidence shows that circRNAs may play an important role in tumorigenesis and cancer metastasis. Circ-SHPRH originates from exons 26–29 of the SHPRH gene, and it is closely associated with human cancers. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases for relevant literatures until 24 December 2022. Eighteen research papers were included in this review, and 11 papers were selected for meta-analysis after screening. Three eligible published studies about circ-SHPRH were enrolled based on their tumor diagnosis aspect, 7 eligible published studies were related to overall survival (OS), and 3 eligible published studies were related to tumor grade. Many studies have shown that circ-SHPRH acts as a miRNA sponge or encodes a protein to regulate downstream genes or signal pathways, and exerts specific biological functions that affect the proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis of cancer cells. IntroductionAcute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare condition characterized by superficial pustules following drug ingestion or infection. Currently, there is no clear link between rheumatism and AGEP. It has been described that hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is a rare cause of acute generalized epidermal necrolysis (AGEP). Presently, there are limited studies on HCQ-induced AGEP. We aimed to explore the clinical features and associated gene expression of AGEP induced after HCQ treatment exposure in rheumatology patients.MethodsWe assessed patients with HCQ-induced AGEP diagnosed at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou University of Chinese Medicine between January 1, 2017, and May 1, 2022. We also reviewed similar cases reported in specific databases.ResultsThe study included five females (mean age, 40.2 years), and the mean time from initiation of HCQ treatment to symptom onset was 12.2 d. All patients received steroids and allergy medications after HCQ discontinuation, and the rash completely resolved within an average of 25.2 d. We performed whole exome sequencing and Sanger validation in our patient sample. CARD14 gene mutations were detected in three patients. Additionally, seven mutation sites were detected.DiscussionHCQ-induced AGEP may have a longer latency period and regression time than AGEP induced by other drugs. Our patients all experienced CARD14 gene mutations. AGEP often resolves with topical therapy and drug discontinuation, although some cases require systemic steroid therapy. In the future, patients with rheumatism should pay attention to the effectiveness of HCQ during treatment and be aware of the associated skin toxicity.

Abstract Simplified cultivation methods for rice production offer considerable social, economic, and environmental benefits. However, limited information is available on yield components of rice grown using simplified cultivation methods in a rice-ratoon rice cropping system. A field experiment using two hybrid and two inbred rice cultivars was conducted to compare four cultivation methods (conventional tillage and transplanting, CTTP; conventional tillage and direct seeding, CTDS; no-tillage and transplanting, NTTP; no-tillage and direct seeding, NTDS) in a rice-ratoon rice system from 2017 to 2020. Main season yields for CTDS and NTDS were higher than for CTTP by 6.1% and 2.8%, respectively; whereas ratoon season yields for CTDS and NTDS were equal to or higher than for CTTP. Annual grain yields for CTDS and NTDS were higher than for CTTP by 4.4% and 3.2%, respectively. The higher CTDS and NTDS yields were associated with higher panicle numbers per m2 and biomass production. Rice hybrids had higher yields than inbred cultivars by 15.8–19.3% for main season and by 15.6–19.4% for ratoon season, which was attributed to long growth duration, high grain weight and biomass production. Our results suggest that CTTP can be replaced by CTDS and NTDS to maintain high grain yields and save labor costs. Developing cultivars with high grain weight could be a feasible approach to achieve high rice yields in the rice-ratoon rice cropping system in southwest China.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are recognized as a novel type of single-stranded endogenous noncoding RNA molecule with the characteristics of tissue specificity, sequence conservation and structural stability. Accumulating studies have shown that circRNAs play a unique biological role in different kinds of diseases. CircRNAs can affect tumor proliferation, migration, metastasis and other behaviors by modulating the expression of downstream genes. CircSMARCA5, an example of a circRNA, is dysregulated in various noninfectious diseases, such as tumors, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Furthermore, recent studies have demonstrated that circSMARCA5 is associated with the occurrence and development of a variety of tumors, including gastric cancer, glioblastoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, multiple myeloma, colorectal cancer, breast cancer and osteosarcoma. Mechanistically, circSMARCA5 primarily acts as a sponge of miRNAs to regulate the expression of downstream genes, and can serve as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of malignant tumors. This review summarizes the biological roles of circSMARCA5 and its molecular mechanism of action in various diseases. Moreover, the meta-analysis of some publications showed that the expression of circSMARCA5 was significantly correlated with the prognosis of patients and tumor TNM stage, showing that circSMARCA5 has the potential to be a prognostic marker.

In the field of Venture Capital (VC), researchers have found that VC companies are more likely to jointly invest with other VC companies. This paper attempts to realize a semi-supervised community detection of the VC network based on the data of VC networking and the list of industry leaders. The main research method is to design the initial label of community detection according to the evolution of components of the VC industry leaders. The results show that the community structure of the VC network has obvious distinguishing characteristics, and the aggregation of these communities is affected by the type of institution, the source of capital, the background of personnel, and the field of investment and the geographical position. Meanwhile, by comparing the results of the semi-supervised community detection algorithm with the results of community detection using extremal optimization, it can be shown to some extent that the semi-supervised community detection results in the VC network are more accurate and reasonable.

Abstract Background Very preterm infants are at risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) is routinely used to prevent anemia in preterm infants; however, the effect of rhEPO on ROP development is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of early prophylactic low-dose rhEPO administration on ROP development in very preterm infants. Methods A total of 1898 preterm infants born before 32 weeks of gestation were included. Preterm infants received rhEPO (n = 950; 500 U/kg, rhEPO group) or saline (n = 948, control group) intravenously within 72 h of birth and then once every other day for 2 weeks. Results The total incidence of ROP was not significantly different between the two groups (10.2% vs. 13.2%, p = 0.055). Further analysis showed that rhEPO group had lower rates of type 2 ROP than the control group (2.2% vs. 4.1%, RR 0.98; 95% CI 0.96–1.00; p = 0.021). Subgroup analysis found that rhEPO treatment significantly decreased the incidence of type 2 ROP in infant boys (1.8% vs. 4.3%, p = 0.021) and in those with a gestational age of 28–296/7 weeks (1.1% vs. 4.9%, p = 0.002) and birth weight of 1000–1499 g (1.2% vs. 4.2%, p = 0.002). There was a small increasing tendency for the incidence of ROP in infants with a gestational age of 28 weeks and birth weight > 1500 g. Rice yield is greatly influenced by climatic factors and soil fertility in the location where it is grown, but information about the individual effects of climatic factors and soil fertility variables is difficult to distinguish because they are often not independent. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the effect of climatic factors on grain yield when soil fertility was not a confounding factor for explaining yield differences across two subtropical environments. Field and pot experiments with six rice cultivars were conducted in Deyang and Luzhou, Sichuan Province, China. We found that rice yield was higher in Deyang than in Luzhou by 7.0–16.8% for field experiments and by 57.6–87.4% for pot experiments. Biomass production rather than harvest index was responsible for the yield difference. Maximum and minimum temperatures and cumulative solar radiation (CSR) before heading (HD) were higher in Deyang than in Luzhou, whereas after HD, maximum and minimum temperatures were lower in Deyang than in Luzhou. Rice yield was more closely related to maximum and minimum temperatures and CSR before HD than to these parameters after HD. There was no difference in yield between soil types from Deyang and Luzhou within the same ecological condition. Thus, the yield difference between the two subtropical environments was mainly caused by the difference in climatic factors. The differences in biomass between Deyang and Luzhou were mostly due to variations in pre-heading crop growth rate (pre-CGR) and pre-heading radiation use efficiency (pre-RUE), which were induced by varying temperatures and CSR. We concluded that lower yield in Luzhou was associated with lower pre-CGR and pre-RUE. Our study suggests that developing rice cultivars with high pre-CGR and pre-RUE through a breeding program may also be a feasible approach to achieve high yield in subtropical environments.

The no-tillage, direct-seeded (NTDS) rice cropping system has attracted considerable attention because of its social, economic, and environmental benefits. However, very limited research has been conducted on optimizing nitrogen (N) management practices to enhance grain yield and N use efficiency (NUE) of rice grown in NTDS. An N fertilization field experiment with two rice hybrids was conducted in 2020 and 2021; the experiment consisted of three N rates (180, 153, and 0 kg N ha−1; N180, N153, and N0, respectively) and two N-application ratios split among the basal, seedling (three-leaf stage), mid-tillering, and panicle initiation stages (50%, 0%, 30%, and 20% and 0%, 30%, 40%, and 30%; R1 and R2, respectively). Although the N rate was 15% lower in the N153 treatment than in the N180 treatment, grain yield for N153 was equal to or slightly higher than that for N180. N153 had a higher agronomic efficiency of applied N (AEN), partial factor productivity of applied N (PFPN), and recovery efficiency of applied N (REN) compared to N180 by 10.1–24.7%, 15.0–20.1%, and 1.8–12.6%, respectively. Grain yield, AEN, PFPN, and REN in R2 were higher than those in R1 by 0.8–4.6%, 2.4–19.7%, 0.7–4.6%, and 3.5–30.0%, respectively. The increase in grain yield was due to improvement in the sink size that resulted from larger panicles, higher biomass production at maturity, which was partially attributable to increased biomass accumulation after heading, and a higher harvest index. Our results suggest that it is feasible to simultaneously improve grain yield and NUE in hybrid rice under NTDS through delayed and reduced N application rate, and current breeding programs need to target large panicle size as a primary objective for NTDS rice.

Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae (M. oryzae) is a major threat to global rice production. In recent years, small interference RNAs (siRNAs) and host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) has been shown to be new strategies for the development of transgenic plants to control fungal diseases and proved a useful tool to study gene function in pathogens. We here tested whether in vitro feeding artificial siRNAs (asiRNAs) could compromise M. oryzae virulence and in vivo HIGS technique could improve rice blast resistance. Our data revealed that silencing of M. oryzae MoAP1 by feeding asiRNAs targeting MoAP1 (i.e., asiR1245, asiR1362, and asiR1115) resulted in inhibited fungal growth, abnormal spores, and decreased pathogenicity. Among the asiRNAs, asiR1115 was the most inhibitory toward the rice blast fungus. Conversely, the asiRNAs targeting three other genes (i.e., MoSSADH, MoACT, and MoSOM1) had no effect on fungal growth. Transgenic rice plants expressing RNA hairpins targeting MoAP1 exhibited improved resistance to 11 tested M. oryzae strains. Confocal microscopy also revealed profoundly restricted appressoria and mycelia in rice blast-infected transgenic rice plants. Our results demonstrate that in vitro asiRNA and in vivo HIGS were useful protection approaches that may be valuable to enhance rice blast resistance.

To compare N uptake and use efficiency of rice among different environments and quantify the contributions of indigenous soil and applied N to N uptake and use efficiency, field experiments were conducted in five sites in five provinces of China in 2012 and 2013. Four cultivars were grown under three N treatments in each site. Average total N uptake was 10–12 g m−2 in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, 20 g m−2 in Changsha, and 23 g m−2 in Xingyi. Rice crops took up 54.6–61.7% of total plant N from soil in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, 64.3% in Changsha, and 63.5% in Xingyi. Partial factor productivity of applied N and recovery efficiency of applied N in Changsha were higher than in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, but were lower than in Xingyi. Physiological efficiency of soil N and fertilizer N were lower in Changsha than in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, while the difference in them between Changsha and Xingyi were small or inconsistent. Average grain yields were 6.5–7.5 t ha−1 (medium yield) in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, 9.0 t ha−1 (high yield) in Changsha, and 12.0 t ha−1 (super high yield) in Xingyi. Our results suggest that both indigenous soil and applied N were key factors for improving rice yield from medium to high level, while a further improvement to super high yield indigenous soil N was more important than fertilizer N, and a simultaneous increasing grain yield and N use efficiency can be achieved using SPAD-based practice in rice production.

Background: Globally, the proportion of child deaths that occur in the neonatal period remains a high level of 37–41%. Differences of cause in neonate death exist in different regions as well as in different economic development countries. The specific aim of this study was to investigate the causes, characteristics, and differences of death in neonates during hospitalization in the tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of China. Methods: All the dead neonates admitted to 26 NICUs were included between January l, 2011, and December 31, 2011. All the data were collected retrospectively from clinical records by a designed questionnaire. Data collected from each NICU were delivered to the leading institution where the results were analyzed. Results: A total of 744 newborns died during the 1-year survey, accounting for 1.2% of all the neonates admitted to 26 NICUs and 37.6% of all the deaths in children under 5 years of age in these hospitals. Preterm neonate death accounted for 59.3% of all the death. The leading causes of death in preterm and term infants were pulmonary disease and infection, respectively. In early neonate period, pulmonary diseases (56.5%) occupied the largest proportion of preterm deaths while infection (27%) and neurologic diseases (22%) were the two main causes of term deaths. In late neonate period, infection was the leading cause of both preterm and term neonate deaths. About two-thirds of neonate death occurred after medical care withdrawal. Of the cases who might survive if receiving continuing treatment, parents' concern about the long-term outcomes was the main reason of medical care withdrawal. Conclusions: Neonate death still accounts for a high proportion of all the deaths in children under 5 years of age. Our study showed the majority of neonate death occurred in preterm infants. Cause of death varied with the age of death and gestational age. Accurate and prompt evaluation of the long-term outcomes should be carried out to guide the critical decision.

In order to understand the yield performance and nitrogen (N) response of hybrid rice under different ecological conditions in southern China, field experiments were conducted in Huaiji County of Guangdong Province, Binyang of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Changsha City of Hunan Province, southern China in 2011 and 2012. Two hybrid (Liangyoupeijiu and Y-liangyou 1) and two inbred rice cultivars (Yuxiangyouzhan and Huanghuazhan) were grown under three N treatments (N1, 225 kg ha−1; N2, 112.5–176 kg ha−1; N3, 0 kg ha−1) in each location. Results showed that grain yield was higher in Changsha than in Huaiji and Binyang for both hybrid and inbred cultivars. The higher grain yield in Changsha was attributed to larger panicle size (spikelets per panicle) and higher biomass production. Consistently higher grain yield in hybrid than in inbred cultivars was observed in Changsha but not in Huaiji and Binyang. Higher grain weight and higher biomass production were responsible for the higher grain yield in hybrid than in inbred cultivars in Changsha. The better crop performance of rice (especially hybrid cultivars) in Changsha was associated with its temperature conditions and indigenous soil N. N2 had higher internal N use efficiency, recovery efficiency of applied N, agronomic N use efficiency, and partial factor productivity of applied N than N1 for both hybrid and inbred cultivars, while the difference in grain yield between N1 and N2 was relatively small. Our study suggests that whether hybrid rice can outyield inbred rice to some extent depends on the ecological conditions, and N use efficiency can be increased by using improved nitrogen management such as site-specific N management in both hybrid and inbred rice production.

Background: With the progress of perinatal medicine and neonatal technology, more and more extremely low birth weight (ELBW) survived all over the world. This study was designed to investigate the short-term outcomes of ELBW infants during their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) stay in the mainland of China. Methods: All infants admitted to 26 NICUs with a birth weight (BW) < l000 g were included between January l, 2011 and December 31, 2011. All the data were collected retrospectively from clinical records by a prospectively designed questionnaire. The data collected from each NICU transmitted to the main institution where the results were aggregated and analyzed. Categorical variables were performed with Pearson Chi-square test. Binary Logistic regression analysis was used to detect risk factors. Results: A total of 258 ELBW infants were admitted to 26 NICUs, of whom the mean gestational age (GA) was 28.1 ± 2.2 weeks, and the mean BW was 868 ± 97 g. The overall survival rate at discharge was 50.0%. Despite aggressive treatment 60 infants (23.3%) died and another 69 infants (26.7%) died after medical care withdrawal. Furthermore, the survival rate was significantly higher in coastal areas than inland areas (53.6% vs. 35.3%, P = 0.019). BW < 750 g and GA < 28 weeks were the largest risk factors, and being small for gestational age was a protective factor related to mortality. Respiratory distress syndrome was the most common complication. The incidence of patent ductus arteriosus, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity was 26.2%, 33.7%, 6.7%, 48.1%, and 41.4%, respectively. Ventilator associated pneumonia was the most common hospital acquired infection during hospitalization. Conclusions: Our study was the first survey that revealed the present status of ELBW infants in the mainland of China. The mortality and morbidity of ELBW infants remained high as compared to other developed countries.

The increasing demand for location-dependent services in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) calls for solutions capable of handling the diversified demands and the unique challenges presented in WSNs. In most applications, nodes need to determine their locations in a reliable manner while operating under stringent constraints in computation, communication, and energy resources. This paper offers a novel solution to bridge the gap between the high accuracy demand and low resources available for range-based localization. We propose KickLoc, a fully distributed scheme, which considers the uncertainty of the distance measurements to minimize localization errors introduced from the range measurement, and leverages information from all neighboring nodes for better position estimations. Our work is evaluated via extensive simulations, with comparisons to other well-known localization schemes, and the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). In addition, we implement and evaluate the proposed system on sensor platforms with different range measurement mechanisms. The results show that this localization solution outperforms existing methods in various scenarios, while remains lightweight and suitable for small, low resources WSNs.

The natural gas upgrading applications involving CH4 purification and concurrent C3H8/n-C4H10 recovery are of great importance yet highly challenging for safe and efficient subsequent manufacturing of downstream commodities due to their similar physicochemical properties and ultra-low concentration. Herein, a robust Zr-MOF, LIFM-233, with optimized pore size/volume/surface ascribed to the introduction of π-electron-rich naphthalene moieties, has been constructed with 6-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2-naphthalenecarboxylate (L) and Zr6 cluster for natural gas upgrading. Based on the high pore volume, optimized pore size, and π-electron-rich pore surface, LIFM-233 presents high C3H8/n-C4H10 uptake capacity (229.3/262.8 cm³ g−1 at 298 K and 1 bar) and good C2–C4/CH4 selective adsorption performance, confirmed by single-component adsorption and dynamic breakthrough experiments. Additionally, high purity of C3H8 (>91.6%) or n-C4H10 (>94.0%) can be afforded through a single regeneration curve. The underlying gas-binding mechanism has been well established by theoretical simulations, which reveal that C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds (HBs) between gas and Zr–O clusters, and C–H⋯π interactions between gas and aromatic rings, collaboratively play pivotal roles in the selective separation of C2–C4 hydrocarbons from CH4, thus demonstrating the importance of the introduction of an appropriate aromatic system.
