Depression is a common occurrence in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD); however, its pathophysiology is still unclear. This study assessed the association between the integrity of white matter and depressive symptoms in patients with PD. 67 patients with PD were divided into a non-depressed PD group (ndPD, n = 30) and a depressed PD group (dPD, n = 37). The dPD group was further subdivided into a mild-moderately depressed PD (mdPD, n = 22) and a severely depressed PD group (sdPD, n = 15). Tract-Based Spatial Statistics was used to compare fractional anisotropy (FA) between groups. Region-of-interest analysis was used to explore changes in diffusivity indices in the regions showing FA abnormalities. The sdPD patients exhibited significantly reduced FA in the left superior longitudinal fasciculus, uncinate fasciculus, anterior corona radiata, corticospinal tract, and bilateral inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus when compared with the ndPD patients, but the decreased FA was within a smaller area when compared with the mdPD patients. No significant difference in FA was found between the mdPD and ndPD groups. Among the dPD patients, FA values in the left superior longitudinal fasciculus negatively correlated with BDI scores. Impaired white matter integrity in the prefronto-limbic/temporal circuitry, mainly in the left hemisphere, is associated with severe, but not mild-moderate depressive symptoms in patients with PD.

Based on multimodal functional magnetic resonance imaging technology, explore the changes of local brain function in the whole brain range of patients with primary insomnia at rest, and conduct correlation analysis to explore the relationship between this locality and function and clinical features. Provide further imaging evidence for the exploration of the neural mechanism of primary insomnia. Using multimodal functional magnetic resonance imaging, self-rating anxiety scale, self-rating depression scale to assess the status anxiety factor and trait anxiety of STAI in patients with primary insomnia (88 cases) and normal sleepers (82 cases). Factors and total scores, depressive mental disorders and total scores were statistically significantly different from the normal sleep group. The study found that patients with primary insomnia under the multimodal functional magnetic resonance imaging assisted treatment have abnormal local functional activities in multiple brain regions such as emotions and sensorimotor regions. We explored the brain of patients with primary insomnia from the perspective of functional differentiation. Changes in nerve activity are conducive to further understanding the characteristics of nerve activity in primary insomnia.

Background Guben Zhike decoction (GBZKD) is derived from the experience of Professor Enxiang Chao, an esteemed master of Chinese medicine, while treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). GBZKD reinforces the healthy qi and consolidates defensive qi. This study explored the efficacy and potential mechanism of action of GBZKD in a COPD mouse model using proteomics. Methods A COPD mouse model was established through cigarette smoke exposure and intranasal lipopolysaccharide administration. The model was verified through lung function test and lung histopathological observation. Label-free quantitative proteomics was used to detect the lung tissue proteins of mice from the GBZKD, COPD, and control groups. Results GBZKD markedly improved the lung function and associated pathological conditions in the COPD mouse model. Proteomic analysis identified 4316 proteins, of which 3696 were quantitative proteins. We highlighted 287 and 184 proteins with significant regulatory roles in the lung tissues of COPD mice and GBZKD-treated mice, respectively. These proteins participated in multiple functions, including complement/coagulation cascade, immune response, and metabolic pathways. Conclusion GBZKD exhibits multitarget and multipathway therapeutic effects in a COPD mouse model.

San Francisco Bay (SFB) is a complex ecosystem that has been heavily impacted by human activities. It has experienced strong year-to-year variations in physical, chemical, and biological conditions, due to both natural climate variation and human activities. There is a need to investigate this long-term variation, with a focus on management practices and needs. The study aims to construct a coupled hydrodynamic and ecosystem model SCHISM/CoSiNE, to investigate interannual variability of chlorophyll and nutrient dynamics in SFB over the 10-year period of 2005–2014. The coupled SCHISM/CoSiNE model captures the long-term observations well. It shows that high chlorophyll concentrations in South Bay persist during warm months, while chlorophyll in North Bay is low and has strong interannual variation. Nutrient concentrations are higher in North Bay where large river outflow influences their distribution and interannual variation, and in lower South Bay. The model results show that phytoplankton blooms in Suisun Bay tend to occur when flow rates are between 100 and 250 m3/s and ammonium concentration is in the range of 1–2 mmol/m3. Model sensitivity experiments show that benthic grazing can potentially reduce phytoplankton biomass, and its effect on chlorophyll concentration is modulated by river outflow. We demonstrate the potential of this open-source model for exploring water quality conditions and options for river flow management of SFB.

Purpose. The study aimed to explore the efficacy and safety of Xinjia Xuanbai Chengqi granules (XJXBCQ) combined with conventional medicine in the treatment of acute exacerbation of chronic pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Patients and Methods. This multicentre, double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled, randomised clinical trial conducted in China from January 2019 to February 2021 recruited 330 participants who were allocated into three groups. All participants underwent conventional basic treatment with oxygen therapy, antibiotics, and a bronchodilator. Besides, group A received XJXBCQ granules and budesonide suspension for inhalation; group B received XJXBCQ granules and half dosage of budesonide suspension; and group C received budesonide suspension and a placebo. All therapies lasted for 5 days, and participants were followed up for 30 days after discharge. The primary outcomes were efficacy, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome score, and clinical symptom score. Secondary outcomes included the blood gas analysis, serum inflammatory markers, adverse events, mortality, theoretical discharge time, actual hospitalisation time, proportion of patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation, proportion of patients transferred to an intensive care unit (ICU), and readmission rate within 30 days after discharge. Results. XJXBCQ adjunct with conventional treatment could significantly improve the total efficacy ( P < 0.05 ). Meanwhile, group A showed significantly better results than group C in the TCM syndrome score, phlegm score, and Wexner constipation score ( P < 0.05 ). For modified British medical research council (mMRC), on day 3 (−0.17, 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.33–−0.01) and day 4 (−0.20, 95% CI: −0.39–−0.02), group A performed statistically better than group C. No significant differences in other secondary outcomes were detected. Conclusion. XJXBCQ is beneficial and safe for AECOPD treatment and could be considered an adjunctive therapy for promoting the relief of clinical symptoms. This trial is registered with ChiCTR1800016915.

Previous studies suggest importance of wind forcing on salt intrusion length and salt flux in river-dominated microtidal estuaries (with tidal range < 2 m). In this study, we investigate the role of wind forcing on salt intrusion in a mesotidal estuary, San Francisco Bay (SFB), with tidal ranges between 2 m and 4 m, through an open-source model of high transferability, the Semi-implicit Cross-scale Hydroscience Integrated System Model (SCHISM). Meanwhile, we investigate circulation and salinity variation of San Francisco Bay. The model’s performance in hydrodynamics at tidal, spring/neap and seasonal time scales is validated through model-observation comparisons. Through realistically forced and process-oriented experiments, we demonstrate that spring/neap tides can cause fortnightly variations in salinity and currents by modulating vertical mixing and stratification; and seasonal variability of circulation in North Bay is determined by change of river discharge and modified by winds, while in South Bay it is dominated by wind-driven flows. Furthermore, we revealed the role of wind on X2 (the distance from the Golden Gate Bridge to the 2-PSU isohaline at the bottom). The model results show that X2 is primarily influenced by river flow and proportional to river flow to the ¼ power. Meanwhile, wind plays a secondary role in modifying X2 by increasing X2 from 0 to 5 km during low discharge period, while spring/neap tide modulation on X2 is negligible but important for salt balance in sub-regions downstream of X2.

Background. Inhalation of particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) among air pollutants may cause lung damage. Gu-Ben-Zhi-Ke-Zhong-Yao (GBZK) is a traditional Chinese medicine prescription that has a beneficial effect on the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the effect of GBZK on PM2.5-induced lung injury remains to be elucidated. Methods. We constructed a mice lung injury model through PM2.5 stimulation and simultaneously performed GBZK gavage treatment. After 4 weeks, the lung tissues of the mice were collected for pathological staining to analyze the degree of damage. The activities of myeloperoxidase (MPO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and oxidative stress-related factors (superoxide dismutase, SOD; glutathione peroxidase, GSH-Px) were detected by commercial kit in lung tissue. Furthermore, the number of neutrophils and related inflammatory factors (interleukin-1, IL-1β; tumor necrosis factor α, TNF-α; interleukin-6, IL-6) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum were collected and tested to evaluate the effect of GBZK on inflammation. Masson staining was used to detect the level of lung fibrosis in mice. The activation of HMGB1 (high-mobility group protein 1) and NFκBp65 (nucleus factor kappa B) in lung tissue was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and western blot. Results. The result revealed that PM2.5 induces lung damage, and GBZK gavage treatment could reduce the degree of injury in a concentration-dependent manner in mice. After GBZK treatment, the MPO activity, MDA content, and oxidative stress level in the lung tissues of mice decreased. And after GBZK treatment, the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines in BALF and blood were decreased. GBZK treatment also improved pulmonary fibrosis in mice. In addition, we also found that GBZK prevented the up-regulation of the HMGB1/NF-κB axis in the lungs of mice. Conclusion. These results indicated that GBZK might protect mice from PM2.5-induced lung injury by inhibiting the HMGB1/NFκB pathway, thus repressing inflammation and pulmonary fibrosis.

There has been a recent surge of success in optimizing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) models with neural evolutionary algorithms. This type of method is inspired by biological evolution and uses different genetic operations to evolve neural networks. Previous neural evolutionary algorithms mainly focused on single-objective optimization problems (SOPs). In this article, we present an end-to-end multi-objective neural evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition and dominance (MONEADD) for combinatorial optimization problems. The proposed MONEADD is an end-to-end algorithm that utilizes genetic operations and rewards signals to evolve neural networks for different combinatorial optimization problems without further engineering. To accelerate convergence, a set of nondominated neural networks is maintained based on the notion of dominance and decomposition in each generation. In inference time, the trained model can be directly utilized to solve similar problems efficiently, while the conventional heuristic methods need to learn from scratch for every given test problem. To further enhance the model performance in inference time, three multi-objective search strategies are introduced in this work. Our experimental results clearly show that the proposed MONEADD has a competitive and robust performance on a bi-objective of the classic travel salesman problem (TSP), as well as Knapsack problem up to 200 instances. We also empirically show that the designed MONEADD has good scalability when distributed on multiple graphics processing units (GPUs).

Purpose: Cancer mortality is relatively high in the elderly population. Folate receptor-positive circulating tumor cell (FR+CTC) has proven an effective biomarker for diagnosis of lung cancer and bladder cancer and may be suitable for other cancer types accompanied with a high expression of FR. To date, the diagnostic efficiency of FR+CTC in the elderly population has not been systematically studied. Herein, we sought to investigate the utility of FR+CTC in cancer diagnosis in the elderly population and the influence of comorbidities on FR+CTC levels in such a population. Patients and methods: A total of 35 cancer patients (including 23 lung cancers, 8 colorectal cancers, and 4 other cancers) and 40 noncancer participants, aged between 80 and 110, were recruited in this study. Three milliliters of pretreatment peripheral blood was collected from each participant for FR+CTC analysis. Results: Compared to previous studies, the FR+CTC level was slightly higher in the elderly population (median FR+CTC levels in cancer patients versus noncancer participants were 14.3 versus 9.2 CTC U/3 mL, respectively, P=0.0002). With 10.0 CTC U/3 mL as the cut-off value, the sensitivity and specificity of FR+CTC were 85.7% and 65.0%, respectively. In combination with established serum tumor biomarkers, the diagnostic efficiency of FR+CTC further improved (sensitivity=87.9%, specificity=71.8%). Clinical factors including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, cerebral infarction, and cardiac, liver, and kidney function were not associated with the FR+CTC level (P>0.05). Conclusion: In this exploratory study, we showed that FR+CTC is an effective biomarker for cancer diagnosis in the elderly population. The presence of comorbidities did not affect the diagnostic efficiency of FR+CTC.

BACKGROUND: Migraine and major depressive disorder (MDD) are both highly prevalent brain disorders and are often comorbid. However, the common and distinctive neural mechanisms underlying these disorders and the brain function alterations associated with their comorbidity are largely unknown. We aimed to explore the functional abnormalities of the brain associated with the co-occurrence of migraine and depression. METHODS: High-resolution T1-weighted and resting-state functional magnetic resonance images (MRI) were acquired from 93 well-matched patients with comorbid migraine and depression, patients with migraine, patients with MDD, and healthy controls. Voxel-wise analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a two-sample t-test of multiple functional variables were performed among the groups. Furthermore, correlation analysis was conducted to detect the clinical significance of the altered functional regions in the brain. RESULTS: Migraine patients with and without depression revealed widely shared regional networks of functional changes. Continuous cropping of the same crop leads to land degradation. This is also called the continuous‐cropping obstacle. Here, we investigated how long‐term continuous cropping of tobacco influences soil biochemical properties and bacterial networks in the mountain lands of China. Two different fields were sampled: one with 25 years of continuous cropping tobacco and one with noncontinuous cropping tobacco. Soil chemical and biological properties were measured including available phosphorus and potassium, soil organic matter, pH, alkali‐hydrolysable nitrogen, micronutrients contents, and activity of urease, catalase, invertase, and phosphatase as well as tobacco agronomic characteristics. Bacterial communities of the two different soils were sequenced by metabarcoding of the 16S ribosomal RNA, and, with these data, network analysis was done. Soil chemical properties and tobacco agronomical properties were negatively affected by the continuous‐cropping obstacle, and this treatment has a less complex network (less modules, nodes, and connectivity) than the soil with noncontinuous cropping treatment. For continuous cropping, there were less generalists, which were key species that connect network, than noncontinuous cropping. Moreover, the taxonomic composition of bacterial network was different in the two different treatments. In the continuous‐cropping network, 40% nodes had negative interactions, suggesting that more competition or antagonism existed among bacterial species. It concluded that continuous cropping has a detrimental effect on soil chemical and that the bacterial network properties under continuous cropping are more sensitive to soil variables (so more unstable and inefficient) because there are less bacterial species that interact each other and this is due to limited nutrients or excessive toxic nutrient.

An open source coupled physical-biogeochemical model is developed for San Francisco Bay (SFB) to study nutrient cycling and plankton dynamics as well as to assist ecosystem based management and risk assessment. The biogeochemical model in this study is based on the Carbon, Silicate and Nitrogen Ecosystem (CoSiNE) model, and coupled to the unstructured grid, Semi-Implicit Cross-scale Hydroscience Integrated System Model (SCHISM). The SCHISM-CoSiNE model reproduces the spatial and temporal variability in nutrients and plankton biomass, and its physical and biogeochemical performance is successfully tested using comparisons with shipboard and fixed station observations. The biogeochemical characteristics of the SFB during wet and dry years are investigated by changing the input of the major rivers. River discharges from the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers affect the phytoplankton biomass in North SFB through both advection and dilution of nutrient (including ammonium, NH4) concentrations in the river. The reduction in residence time caused by increased inflows can result in decreased biomass accumulation, while the corresponding reduction in NH4 concentration favors the growth of biomass. In addition, the model is used to make a series of sensitivity experiments to examine the response of SFB to changes in 1) nutrient loading from rivers and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), 2) a parameter ( ψ ) defining NH4 inhibition of nitrate (NO3) uptake by phytoplankton, 3) bottom grazing and 4) suspended sediment concentration. The model results show that changes in NH4 input from rivers or WWTPs affect the likelihood of phytoplankton blooms via NH4 inhibition and that the choice of ψ is critical. Bottom grazing simulated here as increased plankton mortality demonstrates the potential for bivalve reduction of chlorophyll biomass and the need to include bivalve grazing in future models. Furthermore, the model demonstrates the need to include sediments and their contribution to turbidity and availability of light. This biogeochemical model is suitable for other estuaries with similar ecological issues and anthropogenic stressors.

A three-dimensional, near real-time data-assimilative modeling system for the California coastal ocean is presented. The system consists of a Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) forced by the North American Mesoscale Forecast System (NAM). The ocean model has a horizontal resolution of approximately three kilometers and utilizes a multi-scale three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation methodology. The system is run in near real-time to produce a nowcast every six hours and a 72-hour forecast every day. The performance of this nowcast system is presented using results from a six-year period of 2009–2015. The ROMS results are first compared with the assimilated data as a consistency check. RMS differences in observed satellite infrared sea surface temperatures (SST) and vertical profiles of temperature between observations and ROMS nowcasts were found to be mostly less than 0.5 °C, while the RMS differences in vertical profiles of salinity between observations and ROMS nowcasts were found to be 0.09 or less. The RMS differences in SST show a distinct seasonal cycle that mirrors the number of observations available: the nowcast is less skillful with larger RMS differences during the summer months when there are less infrared SST observations due to the presence of low-level clouds. The larger differences during summer were found primarily along the northern and central coasts in upwelling regions where strong gradients exist between colder upwelled waters nearshore and warmer offshore waters. RMS differences between HF radar surface current observations and ROMS nowcasts were approximately 7–8 cm s−1, which is about 30% of the time mean current speeds in this region. The RMS differences in sea surface height (SSH) between the AVISO (Archiving, Validation and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic) altimetric satellite observations and ROMS nowcasts were about 2 cm. In addition, the system realistically reproduces the interannual variability in temperatures at the M1 mooring (122.03°W, 36.75°N) in Monterey Bay, including the strong warming of the California coastal ocean during 2014. The ROMS nowcasts were then validated against independent observations. A comparison of the ROMS nowcast with independent profile observations of temperature and salinity shows RMS differences of 0.7 to 0.92 °C and 0.13 to 0.17, which are larger (by up to a factor of 2) than the differences found in the comparisons with assimilated data. Validation of the depth-averaged currents derived from Spray gliders shows that the flow patterns associated with California Current and California Undercurrent/Davidson current systems and their seasonal variations are qualitatively reproduced by the ROMS modeling system. Lastly, the impact of two recent upgrades to the system is quantified. Switching the lateral boundary conditions from a U.S. west coast regional model to the global HYCOM (HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model) model results in an improvement in the simulation of the seasonal and interannual variations in the SSH, especially south of Pt. Conception (120.47°W, 34.45°N). The assimilation of altimetric satellite SSH data also results in an improvement in the model surface currents when compared to independent surface drifter observations.

Oil shale is an important unconventional energy and has enormous reserves in the world. However, the high moisture content impedes its utilization in the restoration and combustion process. This paper explores experimental and numerical studies on the drying performance of the Liu Shu River oil shale in a pneumatic conveying dryer (4.8 cm ID, 1.8 m high). The experiments were carried out under the different operation conditions. The 3-D modeling was done with a computational fluid dynamics package, in which the gas phase is modeled as a continuum using Euler approach, and the particle phase is modeled by a discrete phase model with a Lagrangian approach. The effects of inlet air velocity, particle size, solid mass flow rate, and inlet air temperature on the drying performance of oil shale particles are investigated. COVID-19 has remained an uncontained, worldwide pandemic. While battling for the disease in China, six Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recipes have been shown to be remarkably effective for treating patients with COVID-19. The present review discusses principles of TCM in curing infectious disease, and clinical evidence and mechanisms of the 6 most effective TCM recipes used in treating COVID-19 in 92% of all of the confirmed cases in China. Applications of TCM and specific recipes in the treatment of other viral infections, such as those caused by SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, influenza A virus (including H1N1 and H7N9), influenza B, dengue virus as well as Ebola virus, are also discussed. Among the 6 TCM recipes, Jinhua Qinggan (JHQG) granules and Lianhua Qingwen (LHQW) capsules are recommended during medical observation; Lung Cleansing and Detoxifying Decoction (LCDD) is recommended for the treatment of both severe and non-severe patients; Xuanfeibaidu (XFBD) granules are recommended for treating moderate cases; while Huashibaidu (HSBD) and Xuebijing (XBJ) have been used in managing severe cases effectively. The common components and the active ingredients of the six TCM recipes have been summarized to reveal most promising drug candidates. The potential molecular mechanisms of the active ingredients in the six TCM recipes that target ACE2, 3CLpro and IL-6, revealed by molecular biological studies and/or network pharmacology prediction/molecular docking analysis/visualization analysis, are fully discussed. Therefore, further investigation of these TCM recipes may be of high translational value in enabling novel targeted therapies for COVID-19, potentially via purification and characterization of the active ingredients in the effective TCM recipes.

Background Default mode network (DMN), central executive network (CEN) and salience network (SN) are the three most important intrinsic networks of the human brain. Recent studies emphasized the importance of the “triple-network model” which illustrated the interactions within and between DMN, CEN and SN in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. However, previous studies of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) just explored the altered connectivity within these networks while neglected the coupling between them. Hence, the present study was designed to fill this research gap. Methods Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 35 OCD patients and 32 healthy controls (HCs) were acquired. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to extract sub-networks of the DMN, CEN, and SN. Functional connectivity (FC) values within and between these networks were measured. Results OCD patients had increased FC within several DMN, CEN, and SN subsystems. In addition, OCD patients demonstrated aberrant functional interactions between the SN and anterior DMN (aDMN) as well as between the SN and the dorsal CEN (dCEN), and the interaction between the SN and dCEN significantly correlated with trait anxiety level in the OCD group. Limitation Lack of the assessments of cognitive functions is the main limitation of the present study. Conclusions Not only impaired coupling within the brain core intrinsic large-scale networks, but also coupling between large-scale neurocognitive networks, which reflect the difficulties in switching between task-negative and task-positive processing modes are involved in the neurobiological mechanism of OCD.

Efficient cooling system is an essential part of heavy duty extrusion pelleting line which plays an important role in production engineering of megaton polyolefin. In this paper, a new cooling system based on two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) used in heavy duty extrusion pelleting line was presented. Comparative experimental results show that thermal performance of TPCT is more efficient, and the temperature uniformity is much better than traditional extruder (similar to coiled heat exchanger) in preheating process and extrusion reaction process. The effects of different operation conditions: filling ratio (0.2, 0.35, 0.5, 0.65 and 0.8), flow rate of cooling water (120 L/h, 180 L/h, 240 L/h, 300 L/h and 360 L/h) and heating power (7 kW, 9 kW and 11 kW) on thermal characteristics were experimental investigated, respectively. The results show that temperature of barrel inner wall increased significantly as filling ratio increased and evaporator appeared dry out when filling ratio is 0.2. The flow rate of cooling water affected the condenser section obviously, but had little influence on evaporation section. With increase of heating power, the start-up time decreases and the heat transfer coefficient increased. An ideal cooling scheme was concluded: the liquid filling ratio was 0.35, the cooling water flow rate was 180 L/h and the heating power was 11 kW when working medium was water.

During 2014 exceptionally warm water temperatures developed across a wide area off the California coast and within San Francisco Bay (SFB) and persisted into 2016. Observations and numerical model output are used to document this warming and determine its origins. The coastal warming was mostly confined to the upper 100 meters of the ocean and was manifested strongly in the two leading modes of upper ocean (0-100 m) temperature variability in the extra-tropical eastern Pacific. Observations suggest that the coastal warming in 2014 propagated into nearshore regions from the west while later indicating a warming influence that propagated from south to north into the region associated with the 2015-16 El Nino event. An analysis of the upper ocean (0-100 m) heat budget in a Regional Ocean Modeling System simulation confirmed this scenario. The results from a set of sensitivity runs with the model in which the lateral boundary conditions varied supported the conclusions drawn from the heat budget analysis. Concerning the warming in the SFB, an examination of the observations and the heat budget in an unstructured-grid numerical model simulation suggested that the warming during the second half of 2014 and early 2016 originated in the adjacent California coastal ocean and propagated through the Golden Gate into the Bay. The finding that the coastal and Bay warming are due to the relatively slow propagation of signals from remote sources raises the possibility that such warming events may be predictable many months or even several seasons in advance.

Efficient cooling system is an essential part of heavy duty extrusion pelleting line which plays an important role in 300 kt/a production engineering of polyolefin. In this paper, a wickless gravity-assisted two-phase cooling system (WGATPCS) used in heavy duty extrusion pelleting line was presented. The volume of the fluid (VOF) model in FLUENT was used to simulate the two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristic during the operation of WGATPCS by solving the equations of continuity, momentum and energy. The vapor velocity and temperature distribution of cooling system were obtained. The operating conditions applied in this paper are the followings: the filling ratio is 0.3, cooling water flow rate is 180 L/h, and heating power is 11 kW. The predicted temperature profile showed a good agreement with experimental data and the maximum relative error was below 0.99%. Therefore, it was concluded that the CFD model successfully reproduced the heat and mass transfer processes in proposed cooling system. The variation of liquid film thickness, the characteristics of liquid film and vapor-liquid interface were also analyzed. The maximum liquid film thickness was 0.017 mm at the bottom of condenser pipe, the velocity of vapor and liquid at vapor-liquid interface were 0.00785 m/s and 0.09 m/s respectively. The average condensation and evaporation heat transfer coefficients were 68083 W/(m 2 K) and 3929 W/(m 2 K), respectively.

A three-dimensional numerical modeling system for the San Francisco Bay is presented. The system is based on an unstructured grid numerical model known as Semi-implicit Cross-scale Hydroscience Integrated System Model (SCHISM). The lateral boundary condition is provided by a regional coastal ocean model. The surface forcing is provided by a regional atmospheric model. The SCHISM results from a decadal hindcast run are compared with available tide gauge data, as well as a collection of temperature and salinity profiles. An examination of the observed climatological annual mean salinities at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) stations shows the highest salinities to be in the open ocean and the lowest well north (upstream) of the Central Bay, a pattern that does not change substantially with season. The corresponding mean SCHISM salinities reproduced the observed variations with location quite well, though with a fresh bias. The lowest values within the Bay occur during spring and the highest values during autumn, mirroring the seasonal variations in river discharge. The corresponding observed mean temperatures within the Bay were 2 to 3° C cooler in the Central Bay than to either the north or south. This observed pattern of a cooler Central Bay was not particularly well reproduced in the SCHISM results, which also showed a cold bias. Examination of the seasonal means revealed that the cool Central Bay pattern is found only during summer in the SCHISM results. The persistent cold and fresh biases in the model control run were nearly eliminated in a sensitivity run with modifications to the surface heat flux and river discharge. The surface atmospheric forcing and the heat flux at the western boundary are found to be the two major terms in a SCHISM-based heat budget analysis of the mean seasonal temperature cycle for the Central Bay. In the Central Bay salt budget, freshwater discharged by rivers into upstream portions of the Bay to the north balanced by the influx of salt from the west are the primary drivers of the mean seasonal salinity cycle. Concerning the interannual variability in temperatures, the warm anomalies during the period 2014–16 were the strongest and most persistent departures from normal during the period analyzed and were realistically reproduced by SCHISM. The most prominent salinity anomalies in both the observations and SCHISM results were the salty anomalies that persisted for most of the four-year California drought of 2012–2015.
