Abstract Aims Surveys and research on the applications of the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) are important for understanding the current status and future development of this technology in China. This article aimed to investigate the status of hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement in China in 2022. Methods We investigated the overall status of HVPG technology in China—including hospital distribution, hospital level, annual number of cases, catheters used, average cost, indications, and current challenges by using online questionnaire. By counting the number and percentages of cases of these results, we hope to clarify the current status of HVPG measurements in China. Results According to the survey, 85 hospitals in China used HVPG technology in 2022 distributed across 29 provinces. A total of 4989 HVPG measurements were performed in all of the surveyed hospitals in 2022, of which 2813 cases (56.4%) were measured alone. The average cost of HVPG measurement was 5646.8 ± 2327.9 CNY. Of the clinical teams who performed the measurements (sometimes multiple per hospital), 94.3% (82/87) used the balloon method, and the majority of the teams (72.4%, 63/87) used embolectomy catheters. Conclusions This survey clarified the clinical application status of HVPG in China and confirmed that some medical institutions in China have established a foundation for this technology. It is still necessary to continue promoting and popularizing this technology in the future.

Abstract Objective The risk category of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are closely related to the surgical method, the scope of resection, and the need for preoperative chemotherapy. We aimed to develop and validate convolutional neural network (CNN) models based on preoperative venous-phase CT images to predict the risk category of gastric GISTs. Method A total of 425 patients pathologically diagnosed with gastric GISTs at the authors’ medical centers between January 2012 and July 2021 were split into a training set (154, 84, and 59 with very low/low, intermediate, and high-risk, respectively) and a validation set (67, 35, and 26, respectively). Three CNN models were constructed by obtaining the upper and lower 1, 4, and 7 layers of the maximum tumour mask slice based on venous-phase CT Images and models of CNN_layer3, CNN_layer9, and CNN_layer15 established, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC) and the Obuchowski index were calculated to compare the diagnostic performance of the CNN models. Results In the validation set, CNN_layer3, CNN_layer9, and CNN_layer15 had AUROCs of 0.89, 0.90, and 0.90, respectively, for low-risk gastric GISTs; 0.82, 0.83, and 0.83 for intermediate-risk gastric GISTs; and 0.86, 0.86, and 0.85 for high-risk gastric GISTs. In the validation dataset, CNN_layer3 (Obuchowski index, 0.871) provided similar performance than CNN_layer9 and CNN_layer15 (Obuchowski index, 0.875 and 0.873, respectively) in prediction of the gastric GIST risk category (All P >.05). Conclusions The CNN based on preoperative venous-phase CT images showed good performance for predicting the risk category of gastric GISTs.

Abstract Early and accurate diagnosis of focal liver lesions is crucial for effective treatment and prognosis. We developed and validated a fully automated diagnostic system named Liver Artificial Intelligence Diagnosis System (LiAIDS) based on a diverse sample of 12,610 patients from 18 hospitals, both retrospectively and prospectively. In this study, LiAIDS achieved an F1-score of 0.940 for benign and 0.692 for malignant lesions, outperforming junior radiologists (benign: 0.830-0.890, malignant: 0.230-0.360) and being on par with senior radiologists (benign: 0.920-0.950, malignant: 0.550-0.650). Furthermore, with the assistance of LiAIDS, the diagnostic accuracy of all radiologists improved. For benign and malignant lesions, junior radiologists’ F1-scores improved to 0.936-0.946 and 0.667-0.680 respectively, while seniors improved to 0.950-0.961 and 0.679-0.753. Additionally, in a triage study of 13,192 consecutive patients, LiAIDS automatically classified 76.46% of patients as low risk with a high NPV of 99.0%. The evidence suggests that LiAIDS can serve as a routine diagnostic tool and enhance the diagnostic capabilities of radiologists for liver lesions.

The incidence of leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is about 4–5/100,000 individuals per year. LMSs occurring in the small bowel are even rarer, and their preoperative diagnosis is very difficult. We described two patients with pathologically confirmed small bowel LMS and analyzed their clinical and medical imaging features. Similar cases reported in English in Pubmed database over the past decade were reviewed and summarized. These tumors were categorized by the growth direction and relationship with the intestinal lumen into three types: intraluminal (n = 10), intermural (n = 3), and extraluminal (n = 7). Notably, among the three types of LMS, the intramural leiomyosarcoma stands out as a noteworthy subtype. Emerging evidence suggests that smaller tumor size (< 5 cm) and the intraluminal type may serve as favorable prognostic indicators, while the extraluminal type is associated with relatively poor prognosis. Furthermore, the integration of imaging features with CA125 and LDH biomarkers holds promise for potential diagnostic value in LMS.

The aim was to explore the performance of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) in differentiating the molecular subtypes of adult-type gliomas. A multicenter MRI study with standardized imaging protocols, including DCE-MRI and DKI data of 81 patients with WHO grade 2–4 gliomas, was performed at six centers. The DCE-MRI and DKI parameter values were quantitatively evaluated in ROIs in tumor tissue and contralateral normal-appearing white matter. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to differentiate between high-grade (HGG) vs. low-grade gliomas (LGG), IDH1/2 wildtype vs. mutated gliomas, and high-grade astrocytic tumors vs. high-grade oligodendrogliomas. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated for each parameter and for the regression models to determine the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity. Significant differences between tumor groups were found in the DCE-MRI and DKI parameters. A combination of DCE-MRI and DKI parameters revealed the best prediction of HGG vs. LGG (AUC = 0.954 (0.900–1.000)), IDH1/2 wildtype vs. mutated gliomas (AUC = 0.802 (0.702–0.903)), and astrocytomas/glioblastomas vs. oligodendrogliomas (AUC = 0.806 (0.700–0.912)) with the lowest Akaike information criterion. The combination of DCE-MRI and DKI seems helpful in predicting glioma types according to the 2021 World Health Organization’s (WHO) classification.

Objectives: To investigate gadolinium deposition in the liver and brain in a rat model with liver fibrosis (LF) after intravenous administration of gadoxetate disodium (GD) and the histological effects of gadolinium deposition in the liver and brain. Methods: Adult male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: 1) LF group received intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) for 9 weeks alone; 2) LF&GD group received CCl4 and intravenous administration of GD (for 5 consecutive days); 3) GD group received olive oil and GD. Seven days after the final injection of GD, the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN) and liver were excised to determine gadolinium concentrations via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and histologic staining was performed. Bonferroni's post-hoc test and Wilcoxon rank sum test were used to compare the differences between the three groups. ObjectiveTo establish a radiomics model based on intratumoral and peritumoral features extracted from pre-treatment CT to predict the major pathological response (MPR) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy.MethodsA total of 148 NSCLC patients who underwent neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy from two centers (SRRSH and ZCH) were retrospectively included. The SRRSH dataset (n=105) was used as the training and internal validation cohort. Radiomics features of intratumoral (T) and peritumoral regions (P1 = 0-5mm, P2 = 5-10mm, and P3 = 10-15mm) were extracted from pre-treatment CT. Intra- and inter- class correlation coefficients and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator were used to feature selection. Four single ROI models mentioned above and a combined radiomics (CR: T+P1+P2+P3) model were established by using machine learning algorithms. Clinical factors were selected to construct the combined radiomics-clinical (CRC) model, which was validated in the external center ZCH (n=43). The performance of the models was assessed by DeLong test, calibration curve and decision curve analysis.ResultsHistopathological type was the only independent clinical risk factor. Polysaccharides are generally considered to have immune enhancing functions, and mulberry leaf polysaccharide is the main active substance in mulberry leaves, while there are few studies on whether mulberry leaf polysaccharide (MLP) has an effect on immunosuppression and intestinal damage caused by cyclophosphamide (CTX), we investigated whether MLP has an ameliorative effect on intestinal damage caused by CTX. A total of 210 1-day-old Mahuang cocks were selected for this experiment. Were equally divided into six groups and used to evaluate the immune effect of MLP. Our results showed that MLP significantly enhanced the growth performance of chicks and significantly elevated the secretion of cytokines (IL-1β, IL-10, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ), immunoglobulins and antioxidant enzymes in the serum of immunosuppressed chicks. It attenuated jejunal damage and elevated the expression of jejunal tight junction proteins Claudin1, Zo-1 and MUC2, which protected intestinal health. MLP activated TLR4-MyD88-NF-κB pathway and enhanced the expression of TLR4, MyD88 and NF-κB, which served to protect the intestine. 16S rDNA gene high-throughput sequencing showed that MLP increased species richness, restored CTX-induced gut microbiome imbalance, and enhanced the abundance of probiotic bacteria in the gut. MLP improves cyclophosphamide-induced growth inhibition and intestinal damage in chicks by modulating intestinal flora and enhancing immune regulation and antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, this study provides a scientific basis for MLP as an immune enhancer to regulate chick intestinal flora and protect chick intestinal mucosal damage.

BackgroundDue to its potential to significantly reduce scanning time while delivering accurate results for cardiac volume function, compressed sensing (CS) has gained traction in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) cine. However, further investigation is necessary to explore its feasibility and impact on myocardial strain results.Materials and methodsA total of 102 participants [75 men, 46.5 ± 17.1 (SD) years] were included in this study. Each patient underwent four consecutive cine sequences with the same slice localization, including the reference multi-breath-hold balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFPref) cine, the CS cine with the same flip angle as bSSFPref before (CS45) and after (eCS45) contrast enhancement, and the CS cine (eCS70) with a 70-degree flip angle after contrast enhancement. In order to understand the water content distribution characteristics of 4A molecular sieve in the process of water absorption and dehydration, the calculation methods of high temperature dehydration and low temperature water absorption were used to discuss the water content distribution of 4A molecular sieve under different desorption temperature and atmosphere. The results showed that when the desorption temperature was 200~230 ℃, the effective residual water was 4%~5%, the effective desorption water was 24%~25% and the water absorption was 83%~87% in the non vacuum air desorption under vacuum, the effective residual water was 1%~2%, the effective desorption water was 27%~28%, and the water absorption is 93%~97%. In order to make the effective residual water content less than 2%, the best desorption regeneration conditions are vacuum atmosphere and desorption temperature not less than 200 ℃.The effective dewater and residual water of molecular sieve in non vacuum atmosphere can be estimated by differential thermal analysis. The water absorption rate of the sample after vacuum desorption is higher than that of the sample without vacuum desorption.

Objectives Our objective is to develop a prediction tool to predict the death after in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA).Design We conducted a retrospective double-centre observational study of IHCA patients from January 2015 to December 2021. Data including prearrest diagnosis, clinical features of the IHCA and laboratory results after admission were collected and analysed. Logistic regression analysis was used for multivariate analyses to identify the risk factors for death. A nomogram was formulated and internally evaluated by the boot validation and the area under the curve (AUC). Performance of the nomogram was further accessed by Kaplan-Meier survival curves for patients who survived the initial IHCA.Setting Intensive care unit, Tongji Hospital, China.Participants Adult patients (≥18 years) with IHCA after admission. Background: Although compressed sensing (CS) accelerated cine holds immense potential to replace conventional cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) cine, how to use CS-based cine appropriately during clinical CMR examinations still needs exploring. Methods: A total of 104 patients (46.5 ± 17.1 years) participated in this prospective study. For each participant, a balanced steady state free precession (bSSFP) cine was acquired as a reference, followed by two CS accelerated cine sequences with identical parameters before and after contrast injection. Lastly, a CS accelerated cine sequence with an increased flip angle was obtained. We subsequently compared scanning time, image quality, and biventricular function parameters between these sequences. Results: All CS cine sequences demonstrated significantly shorter acquisition times compared to bSSFPref cine (p < 0.001). The bSSFPref cine showed higher left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) than all CS cine sequences (all p < 0.001), but no significant differences in LVEF were observed among the three CS cine sequences. Additionally, CS cine sequences displayed superior global image quality (p < 0.05) and fewer artifacts than bSSFPref cine (p < 0.005). Unenhanced CS cine and enhanced CS cine with increased flip angle showed higher global image quality than other cine sequences (p < 0.005). Conclusion: Single breath-hold CS cine delivers precise biventricular function parameters and offers a range of benefits including shorter scan time, better global image quality, and diminished motion artifacts. This innovative approach holds great promise in replacing conventional bSSFP cine and optimizing the CMR examination workflow.

Abstract In this study, we highlight some important factors in the specimen preparation methods for evaluating photovoltaic backsheet properties after accelerated aging. Two different sequences are considered: Method (I) cut‐then‐age: cut into 1‐cm wide strips and then expose to stress, and Method (II) age‐then‐cut: expose a larger sheet to stress and then cut into 1‐cm widths for mechanical property measurements. We also compare the effect of three cutting methods, (a) tensile specimen punch, (b) paper cutter, and (c) fresh razor blade. Several commercial backsheets were evaluated, with stress exposures including (a) pressure cooker test (PCT), (b) dry ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, and (c) UV combined damp heat tests. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and intrinsic viscosity (IV) were used to analyze the materials on unstressed materials and samples exposed to PCT. The results show that both the cutting method and the time of cutting have an impact on the backsheet mechanical properties. Under UV exposure, Method II, age‐then‐cut, generally resulted in a higher average value, with more variation than Method I; however, if the side strips from Method II were excluded, the variation dropped to the same level. This is because the specimens at the sides of the sheet get additional damage from UV light from the exposed sides of the sample. In contrast to UV exposure, PCT specimens prepared by Method II result in lower average values and higher variability. This is attributed to embrittlement through the bulk of the sample where the cutting of embrittled specimens appears to result in more edge defects which can then initiate a break at smaller strains. The data suggest that for UV exposures, the specimens should be cut after aging and the exposed side specimens discarded, and that for PCT exposures, the specimens should be cut before the exposure.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) refers to diffuse brain dysfunction secondary to systemic infection without central nervous system infection. The early diagnosis of SAE remains a major clinical problem, and its diagnosis is still exclusionary. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) related techniques, such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), molecular MRI (mMRI), arterial spin-labeling (ASL), fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), currently provide new options for the early identification of SAE. This review collected clinical and basic research and case reports related to SAE and MRI-related techniques in recent years, summarized and analyzed the basic principles and applications of MRI technology in diagnosing SAE, and provided a basis for diagnosing SAE by MRI-related techniques.

In recent years, the coagulation properties of inorganic minerals such as kaolin and zeolite have been demonstrated. This study aimed to assess the hemostatic properties of three local clays from China: natural kaolin from Hainan, natural halloysite from Yunnan, and zeolite synthesized by our group. The physical and chemical properties, blood coagulation performance, and cell biocompatibility of the three materials were tested. The studied materials were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All three clays showed different morphologies and particle size, and exhibited negative potentials between pH 6 and 8. The TGA and DSC curves for kaolin and halloysite were highly similar. Kaolin showed the highest water absorption capacity (approximately 93.8% ± 0.8%). All three clays were noncytotoxic toward L929 mouse fibroblasts. Kaolin and halloysite showed blood coagulation effects similar to that exhibited by zeolite, indicating that kaolin and halloysite are promising alternative hemostatic materials.

Multi-phase computed tomography (CT) images have gained significant popularity in the diagnosis of hepatic disease. There are several challenges in the liver segmentation of multi-phase CT images. (1) Annotation: due to the distinct contrast enhancements observed in different phases (i.e., each phase is considered a different domain), annotating all phase images in multi-phase CT images for liver or tumor segmentation is a task that consumes substantial time and labor resources. (2) Poor contrast: some phase images may have poor contrast, making it difficult to distinguish the liver boundary. In this paper, we propose a boundary-enhanced liver segmentation network for multi-phase CT images with unsupervised domain adaptation. The first contribution is that we propose DD-UDA, a dual discriminator-based unsupervised domain adaptation, for liver segmentation on multi-phase images without multi-phase annotations, effectively tackling the annotation problem. To improve accuracy by reducing distribution differences between the source and target domains, we perform domain adaptation at two levels by employing two discriminators, one at the feature level and the other at the output level. The second contribution is that we introduce an additional boundary-enhanced decoder to the encoder–decoder backbone segmentation network to effectively recognize the boundary region, thereby addressing the problem of poor contrast. In our study, we employ the public LiTS dataset as the source domain and our private MPCT-FLLs dataset as the target domain. The experimental findings validate the efficacy of our proposed methods, producing substantially improved results when tested on each phase of the multi-phase CT image even without the multi-phase annotations. As evaluated on the MPCT-FLLs dataset, the existing baseline (UDA) method achieved IoU scores of 0.785, 0.796, and 0.772 for the PV, ART, and NC phases, respectively, while our proposed approach exhibited superior performance, surpassing both the baseline and other state-of-the-art methods. Notably, our method achieved remarkable IoU scores of 0.823, 0.811, and 0.800 for the PV, ART, and NC phases, respectively, emphasizing its effectiveness in achieving accurate image segmentation.

Summary: Background: This study, based on multicentre cohorts, aims to utilize computed tomography (CT) images to construct a deep learning model for predicting major pathological response (MPR) to neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and further explore the biological basis under its prediction. Methods: 274 patients undergoing curative surgery after neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy for NSCLC at 4 centres from January 2019 to December 2021 were included and divided into a training cohort, an internal validation cohort, and an external validation cohort. ShuffleNetV2x05-based features of the primary tumour on the CT scans within the 2 weeks preceding neoadjuvant administration were employed to develop a deep learning score for distinguishing MPR and non-MPR. To reveal the underlying biological basis of the deep learning score, a genetic analysis was conducted based on 25 patients with RNA-sequencing data. Findings: MPR was achieved in 54.0% (n = 148) patients. The area under the curve (AUC) of the deep learning score to predict MPR was 0.73 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.58–0.86) and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.58–0.85) in the internal validation and external validation cohorts, respectively. After integrating the clinical characteristic into the deep learning score, the combined model achieved satisfactory performance in the internal validation (AUC: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.64–0.89) and external validation cohorts (AUC: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.62–0.87). In the biological basis exploration for the deep learning score, a high deep learning score was associated with the downregulation of pathways mediating tumour proliferation and the promotion of antitumour immune cell infiltration in the microenvironment. Interpretation: The proposed deep learning model could effectively predict MPR in NSCLC patients treated with neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy. ObjectiveTo assess the validity of pre- and posttreatment computed tomography (CT)-based radiomics signatures and delta radiomics signatures for predicting progression-free survival (PFS) in stage III-IV non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients after immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy.MethodsQuantitative image features of the largest primary lung tumours were extracted on CT-enhanced imaging at baseline (time point 0, TP0) and after the 2nd-3rd immunotherapy cycles (time point 1, TP1). The critical features were selected to construct TP0, TP1 and delta radiomics signatures for the risk stratification of patient survival after ICI treatment. In addition, a prediction model integrating the clinicopathologic risk characteristics and phenotypic signature was developed for the prediction of PFS.ResultsThe C-index of TP0, TP1 and delta radiomics models in the training and validation cohort were 0.64, 0.75, 0.80, and 0.61, 0.68, 0.78, respectively. The delta radiomics score exhibited good accuracy for distinguishing patients with slow and rapid progression to ICI treatment. Abstract Background To explore the risk factors for severe bleeding complications after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) according to the modified Clavien scoring system. Methods We retrospectively analysed 2981 patients who received percutaneous nephrolithotomies from January 2014 to December 2020. Study inclusion criteria were PCNL and postoperative mild or severe renal haemorrhage in accordance with the modified Clavien scoring system. Mild bleeding complications included Clavien 2, while severe bleeding complications were greater than Clavien 3a. It has a good prognosis and is more likely to be underestimated and ignored in retrospective studies in bleeding complications classified by Clavien 1, so no analysis about these was conducted in this study. Clinical features, medical comorbidities and perioperative characteristics were analysed. Chi-square, independent t tests, Pearson’s correlation, Fisher exact tests, Mann–Whitney and multivariate logistic regression were used as appropriate. Results Of the 2981 patients 70 (2.3%), met study inclusion criteria, consisting of 51 men and 19 women, 48 patients had severe bleeding complications. The remaining 22 patients had mild bleeding. Patients with postoperative severe bleeding complications were more likely to have no or slight degree of hydronephrosis and have no staghorn calculi on univariate analysis (p

The study aims to elucidate the physicochemical properties and immunomodulatory activity of two polysaccharides (ACPt0 and ACPt2) from Abrus cantoniensis. Results revealed that ACPt0 with a molecular weight of 26.0 kDa, was mainly composed of glucose (83.1%) and galactose (6.1%), and that ACPt2 with a molecular weight of 145.6/8.9 kDa, consisted of galactose (25.6%), galacturonic acid (22.2%), arabinos (16.6%) and galactose (11.0%) respectively. AFM and Congo red experiments suggested that ACPt0 and ACPt2 might be spherical particles with triple-helix conformation in aqueous solution. ACPt0 and ACPt2 exhibited immunomodulatory activity by promoting the proliferation, augmenting pinocytic and phagocytic capacities, releasing immunoactive molecules such as ROS, NO, iNOS, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β, upregulation of the mRNA levels of corresponding cytokines in macrophages. Moreover, ACPt0 and ACPt2 were recognized by toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and exerted immunomodulatory effects via activating Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and serine/threonine kinase (Akt) signaling pathways in macrophages. Notably, ACPt2 had higher immunomodulatory activity than ACPt0. Based on the present findings, ACPt0 and ACPt2 could be explored as an active component of immunomodulators in the food and pharmaceutical fields.

ObjectiveTo investigate the feasibility of 3D left ventricular global and regional strain by using one breath-hold (BH) compressed sensing cine (CSC) protocol and determine the agreement between CSC and conventional cine (CC) protocols.MethodsA total of 30 volunteers were enrolled in this study. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) images were acquired using a 1.436 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. The CSC protocols included one BH CSC and the shortest BH CSC protocols with different parameters and were only performed in short-axis (SA) view following CC protocols. Left ventricular (LV) end-diastole volume (EDV), end-systole volume (ESV), stroke volume (SV), and ejection fraction (EF) global and regional strain were calculated by CC, one BH CSC, and shortest BH CSC protocols. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and coefficient of variance (CV) of these parameters were used to determine the agreement between different acquisitions.ResultsThe agreement of all volumetric variables and EF between the CC protocol and one BH CSC protocol was excellent (ICC > 0.9). EDV, ESV, and SV between CC and shortest BH CSC protocols also had a remarkable coherence (ICC > 0.9). The agreement of 3D LV global strain assessment between CC protocol and one BH CSC protocol was good (ICC > 0.8). Most CVs of variables were also good (CV < 15%). ICCs of all variables were lower than 0.8. CVs of all parameters were higher than 15% except global longitudinal strain (GLS) between CC and shortest BH CSC protocols. The agreement of regional strain between CC and BH CSC protocols was heterogeneous (-0.2 < ICC < 0.7). Many variables of CVs were poor.ConclusionNotably, one BH CSC protocol can be used for 3D global strain analysis, along with a good correlation with the CC protocol. The regional strain should continue to be computed by the CC protocol due to poor agreement and a remarkable variation between the protocols. The shortest BH CSC protocol was insufficient to replace the CC protocol for 3D global and regional strain.

This study was designed to systematically elucidate the immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects of three polysaccharide fractions (ACP60, ACP80, and ACPt2) from Abrus cantoniensis on cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced immunosuppressive mice. The experimental mice were divided into 12 groups, then modeled and administrated with different doses of three polysaccharides (50, 150, 300 mg/kg/day) by gavage. The results showed that ACP could markedly recover the CTX-induced decline in immune organ and hemocytes indexes and promote proliferation of splenocytes, earlap swelling rate, secretion of cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1β, IL-6), and immunoglobulin (Ig-M and Ig-G). Additionally, ACP improved the enzymatic activities of T-SOD and GSH-PX greatly, while the level of MDA was significantly decreased in the liver. In particular, ACPt2 had higher immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities than ACP60 and ACP80. Based on the present findings, ACP could be utilized as an efficacious candidate for immunomodulators and antioxidants, which provide a new application prospect in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

ObjectiveWe aimed to establish an MRI radiomics model and a Delta radiomics model to predict tumor retraction after induction chemotherapy (IC) combined with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in non-endemic areas and to validate its efficacy.MethodsA total of 272 patients (155 in the training set, 66 in the internal validation set, and 51 in the external validation set) with biopsy pathologically confirmed primary NPC who were screened for pretreatment MRI were retrospectively collected. The NPC tumor was delineated as a region of interest in the two sequenced images of MRI before treatment and after IC, followed by radiomics feature extraction. With the use of maximum relevance minimum redundancy (mRMR) and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithms, logistic regression was performed to establish pretreatment MRI radiomics and pre- and post-IC Delta radiomics models. The optimal Youden’s index was taken; the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve were drawn to evaluate the predictive efficacy of different models.ResultsSeven optimal feature subsets were selected from the pretreatment MRI radiomics model, and twelve optimal subsets were selected from the Delta radiomics model. The area under the ROC curve, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value (NPV), and positive predictive value (PPV) of the MRI radiomics model were 0.865, 0.827, 0.837, 0.813, 0.776, and 0.865, respectively; the corresponding indicators of the Delta radiomics model were 0.941, 0.883, 0.793, 0.968, 0.833, and 0.958, respectively.ConclusionThe pretreatment MRI radiomics model and pre- and post-IC Delta radiomics models could predict the IC-CCRT response of NPC in non-epidemic areas.

In this study, four plant tannins, including AT (Acacia mearnsii tannin, 68%), CT (Castanea sativa tannin, 60%), QT (Schinopsis lorenzii tannin, 73%) and TT (Caesalpinia spinosa tannin, 50%) were added to broiler diets for 42 days to evaluate and compare their effects on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune performance and gut microbiota in broilers. The results showed that the supplementation of five tannins could increase the production of T-AOC, GSH-Px, SOD and CAT and reduce the production of MDA in the serum of broilers (p < 0.01), but the antioxidant effect of the AT group was lower than that of the other three groups (p < 0.01). All four tannins decreased the level of the pro-inflammatory factor IL-1β and increased the level of the anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 (p < 0.01). CT, QT and TT decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory factors IL-6 and TNF-α (p < 0.01), while AT and CT increased the level of IL-2 in serum (p < 0.01). Supplementation with four tannins also increased the levels of IgG, IgM, IgA and sIgA in serum (p < 0.01) and the levels of ZO-1, claudin-1 and occludin in the jejunum (p < 0.01). The detection results of ALT and AST showed that CT, QT and TT decreased the concentrations of ALT and AST in serum (p < 0.01). The results of the gut microbiota showed that the abundance of Clostridia and Subdoligranulum increased, and the abundance of Oscillospiraceae decreased, compared to the control group after adding the four tannins to the diets (p > 0.05). In addition, CT, QT and TT decreased the abundance of Lactobacillus and increased the abundance of Bacteroides compared to the control group, while AT showed the opposite result (p > 0.05). Overall, our study shows that tannins derived from different plants have their own unique effects on broilers. AT and CT can promote broilers’ growth better than other tannins, CT has the best ability to improve immune and antioxidant properties, and QT and TT have the best effect on broilers’ liver protection.

BackgroundCardiac light-chain amyloidosis (AL CA) portends poor prognosis. Contrast cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) with late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) imaging is an important tool in recognizing AL CA. But contraindications to contrast CMR would significantly restrict its clinical application value. Our study aims to construct a convenient risk score to help identify cardiac involvement in patients at risk of AL CA. Moreover, we also investigate whether this risk score could provide prognosis information.Materials and MethodsSixty-three patients at risk of AL CA were retrospectively included in our study. Basic clinical characters, lab results, 12-lead electrocardiogram data, and cardiac magnetic resonance image data were collected. AL CA was diagnosed according to typical CA LGE pattern. Logistic analysis was used to figure out predictive parameters of AL CA and their β coefficients, further constructing the risk score. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve was used to find the cut-off point best distinguishing AL CA+ from AL CA–patients. Bootstrapping was used for internal validation. All patients were divided into high-risk and low-risk group according to the diagnostic cut-off point, and followed up for survival information. Kaplan-Meier plots and log-rank test were performed to analyze if this score had prognostic value.ResultsThe risk score finally consisted of 4 parameters: pericardial effusion (PE) (1 point), low electrocardiographic QRS voltages (LQRSV) (1 point), CMR-derived impaired global radial strain (GRS) (13 mm) (2 points). Total score ranged from 0 to 5 points. A cut-off point of 1.5 showed highest accuracy in diagnosing AL CA with an AUC of 0.961 (95% CI: 0.924–0.997, sensitivity: 90.6%, specificity: 83.9%). Kaplan-Meier plots and log-rank test showed that the high-risk group had significantly poor overall survival rates.ConclusionIn patients at risk of AL CA, a risk score incorporating the presence of PE, LQRSV, and CMR-derived impaired GRS and increased LVMWT is predictive of a diagnosis of AL CA by LGE criteria. This risk score may be helpful especially when contrast CMR is not available or contraindicated, and further studies should be considered to validate this score.

To assess the diagnostic performance of fractional flow reserve (FFR) derived from coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) (CT-FFR) obtained by a new computational fluid dynamics (CFD) algorithm to detect ischemia, using FFR as a reference, and analyze the characteristics of “gray zone” and misdiagnosed lesions. This prospective multicenter clinical trial (NCT03692936, https://clinicaltrials.gov/) analyzed 317 patients with coronary stenosis between 30 and 90% in 366 vessels from five centers undergoing CTA and FFR between November 2018 and March 2020. CT-FFR were obtained from a CFD algorithm (Heartcentury Co., Ltd., Beijing, China). Diagnostic performance of CT-FFR and CTA in detecting ischemia was assessed. Coronary atherosclerosis characteristics of gray zone and misdiagnosed lesions were analyzed. Per-vessel sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for CT-FFR and CTA were 89.9, 87.8, 88.8% and 89.3, 35.5, 60.4%, respectively. Accuracy of CT-FFR was 80.0% in gray zone lesions. In gray zone lesions, lumen area and diameter were significantly larger than lesions with FFR < 0.76 (both p < 0.001), lesion length, non-calcified and calcified plaque volume were all significantly higher than non-ischemic lesions (all p < 0.05). In gray zone lesions, Agatston score (OR = 1.009, p = 0.044) was the risk factor of false negative results of CT-FFR. In non-ischemia lesions, coronary stenosis >50% (OR = 2.684, p = 0.03) was the risk factor of false positive results. Lumen area (OR = 0.567, p = 0.02) and diameter (OR = 0.296, p = 0.03) had a significant negative effect on the risk of false positive results of CT-FFR. In conclusion, CT-FFR based on the new parameter-optimized CFD model provides better diagnostic performance for lesion-specific ischemia than CTA. For gray zone lesions, stenosis degree was less than those with FFR < 0.76, and plaque load was heavier than non-ischemic lesions.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary liver cancer that produces a high mortality rate. It is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, especially in Asia, Africa, and southern Europe. Although surgical resection is an effective treatment, patients with HCC are at risk of recurrence after surgery. Preoperative early recurrence prediction for patients with liver cancer can help physicians develop treatment plans and will enable physicians to guide patients in postoperative follow-up. However, the conventional clinical data based methods ignore the imaging information of patients. Certain studies have used radiomic models for early recurrence prediction in HCC patients with good results, and the medical images of patients have been shown to be effective in predicting the recurrence of HCC. In recent years, deep learning models have demonstrated the potential to outperform the radiomics-based models. In this paper, we propose a prediction model based on deep learning that contains intra-phase attention and inter-phase attention. Intra-phase attention focuses on important information of different channels and space in the same phase, whereas inter-phase attention focuses on important information between different phases. We also propose a fusion model to combine the image features with clinical data. Our experiment results prove that our fusion model has superior performance over the models that use clinical data only or the CT image only. Our model achieved a prediction accuracy of 81.2%, and the area under the curve was 0.869.

Abstract Background Pulmonary Cryptococcosis is a common fungal infection mainly caused by Cryptococcus neoformans/C.gattii species in immunocompromised patients. Cases of pulmonary cryptococcosis in patients with normal immune function are increasingly common in China. Clinical and radiographic features of pulmonary cryptococcosis are various and without obvious characteristics, so it is often misdiagnosed as pulmonary metastatic tumor or tuberculosis. When coexisting with malignant lung tumors, it was more difficult to differentiate from metastatic lung cancer, although the coexistence of pulmonary cryptococcosis and central type lung cancer is rare. Reviewing the imaging manifestations and diagnosis of the case and the relevant literature will contribute to recognition of the disease and a decrease in misdiagnoses. Case presentation A 72-year-old immunocompetent Han Chinese man had repeated dry cough for more than half a year. CT examination of chest showed an irregular mass at the left hilum of the lung, and two small nodules in the right lung, which were considered as the left central lung cancer with right lung metastasis. However, the patient was diagnosed with pulmonary cryptococcosis coexisting with central type lung cancer based on the results of laboratory examination, percutaneous lung biopsy, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and surgical pathology. The patient underwent surgical resection of the left central type lung cancer and was placed on fluconazole treatment after a positive diagnosis was made. Five years after the lung cancer surgery, the patient had a recurrence, but the pulmonary cryptococcus nodule disappeared. Conclusion Our case shows that CT findings of central type lung cancer with multiple pulmonary nodules are not necessarily metastases, but may be coexisting pulmonary cryptococcosis. CT images of cryptococcosis of the lung were diverse and have no obvious characteristics, so it was very difficult to distinguish from metastatic tumors. CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy was a simple and efficient method for identification.

Post-operative early recurrence (ER) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of death. The prediction of the ER of HCC before treatment contributes to guiding treatment and follow-up protocols. In recent years, CT radiomics signatures have been proven effective in several studies in predicting early recurrence of HCC, there are still two major challenges. First, the radiomics features extracted were low or mid-level features, which may not fully characterize HCC heterogeneity. Second, the fusion approach of clinical textual data and image information is in little consensus. In this paper, we proposed a deep-learning based prediction model to extract high-level features from the triple-phase CT images and compare its performance with traditional radiomics model and clinical model. The accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristics of three models was 69.52%/0.723, 67.04%/0.64, 76.03%/0.75, respectively. In addition, we proposed four fusion models to combine clinical data and high-level features. Among them, Fusion model D performed best, achieving a higher prediction accuracy of 78.66% and AUC of 0.8248. Moreover, fusion models with a joint loss function can further improve the prediction performance to 80.49% and 0.8331.

Background: Ventricular arrhythmias are associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Previous studies have found the late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) was independently associated with ventricular arrhythmia (VA) in HCM. The risk stratification of VA remains complex and LGE is present in the majority of HCM patients. This study was conducted to determine whether the scar heterogeneity from LGE-derived entropy is associated with the VAs in HCM patients.Materials and Methods: Sixty-eight HCM patients with scarring were retrospectively enrolled and divided into VA (31 patients) and non-VA (37 patients) groups. The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and percentage of the LGE (% LGE) were evaluated. The scar heterogeneity was quantified by the entropy within the scar and left ventricular (LV) myocardium.Results: Multivariate analyses showed that a higher scar [hazard ratio (HR) 2.682; 95% CI: 1.022–7.037; p = 0.039] was independently associated with VA, after the adjustment for the LVEF, %LGE, LV maximal wall thickness (MWT), and left atrium (LA) diameter.Conclusion: Scar entropy and %LGE are both independent risk indicators of VA. A high scar entropy may indicate an arrhythmogenic scar, an identification of which may have value for the clinical status assessment of VAs in HCM patients.

Introduction: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the pancreas (SCCP) is a rare malignant tumor that has been reported in individual case reports only. The clinical data on primary SCCP treatment are limited. Therefore, the appropriate management strategy for this disease should be standardized.Case Presentation: We present the case of a 63-year-old man admitted to our hospital for upper left abdominal pain for 2 months without weight loss or jaundice. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdomen revealed a mixed solid and cystic lesion in the pancreatic tail, measuring 35 × 37 mm in maximum diameter with enhancement. The patient was diagnosed with primary SCCP without metastasis, based on radiological and pathological findings. He did not receive neoadjuvant therapy postoperatively and was followed up by CT and MRI for 18 months without recurrence or metastasis.Result: Complete resection is the most effective treatment for early stage primary SCCP. Abdominal MRI is an effective imaging tool for preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up of primary SCCP. The need for neoadjuvant therapy depends on various factors.Conclusion: Primary SCCP is a tumor with poor prognosis. Risk factor control, early accurate radiologic evaluation, and individualized treatment strategies improve the quality of life and prolong the overall survival period of patients.

Acinetobacter nosocomialis is a prevalent opportunistic pathogen that causes hospital-acquired infections. The increasing threats from A. nosocomialis infections have led to attention from the scientific and medical communities. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) was performed for an exudate specimen collected from an ICU patient with wound infection, followed by sepsis, in Tongji Hospital. Three assembly strategies were employed to recover the genome of A. nosocomialis in the metagenomic sample. Together with publicly available genomes of A. nosocomialis, the features of population genetics and molecular epidemiology were deeply analyzed. A draft genome was reconstructed for the metagenomic strain WHM01, derived from the ST410 A. nosocomialis dominating the microbial community, thereby prompting its highly pathogenic risk, which is associated with infection and persistence. The structure of the bacterial pangenome was characterized, including the 1862 core and 11,815 accessory genes present in the 157 strains. The genetic diversity of the genes coding for the 128 virulence factors assigned to 14 functional categories was uncovered in this nosocomial pathogen, such as the lipooligosaccharide, capsule, type IV pilus, and outer membrane proteins. Our work revealed genomic properties of ST410 A. nosocomialis, which is prevalent in China, and further highlighted that metagenomic surveillance may be a prospective application for evaluating the pathogenic characteristics of the nosocomial opportunistic pathogens.

Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is prone to myocardial heterogeneity and fibrosis, which are the substrates of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs). Cardiac magnetic resonance tissue tracking (CMR-TT) can quantitatively reflect global and regional left ventricular strain from different directions. It is uncertain whether the change of myocardial strain detected by CMR-TT is associated with VAs. The aim of the study is to explore the differential diagnostic value of VAs in HCM by CMR-TT.Materials and Methods: We retrospectively included 93 HCM patients (38 with VAs and 55 without VAs) and 30 healthy cases. Left ventricular function, myocardial strain parameters and percentage of late gadolinium enhancement (%LGE) were evaluated.Results: Global circumferential strain (GCS) and %LGE correlated moderately (r = 0.51, P < 0.001). HCM patients with VAs had lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), global radial strain (GRS), GCS, and global longitudinal strain (GLS), but increased %LGE compared with those without VAs (P < 0.01 for all). %LGE and GCS were indicators of VAs in HCM patients by multivariate logistic regression analysis. HCM patients with %LGE >5.35% (AUC 0.81, 95% CI 0.70–0.91, P < 0.001) or GCS >-14.73% (AUC 0.79, 95% CI 0.70–0.89, P < 0.001) on CMR more frequently had VAs. %LGE + GCS were able to better identify HCM patients with VAs (AUC 0.87, 95% CI 0.79–0.95, P < 0.001).Conclusion: GCS and %LGE were independent risk indicators of VAs in HCM. GCS is expected to be a good potential predictor in identifying HCM patients with VAs, which may provide important values to improve risk stratification in HCM in clinical practice.

Objectives: To investigate the performance of radiomic-based quantitative analysis on CT images in predicting invasiveness of lung adenocarcinoma manifesting as pure ground-glass nodules (pGGNs).Methods: A total of 275 lung adenocarcinoma cases, with 322 pGGNs resected surgically and confirmed pathologically, from January 2015 to October 2017 were enrolled in this retrospective study. All nodules were split into training and test cohorts randomly with a ratio of 4:1 to establish models to predict between pGGN-like adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS)/minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA) and invasive adenocarcinoma (IVA). Radiomic feature extraction was performed using Pyradiomics with semi-automatically segmented tumor regions on CT scans that were contoured with an in-house plugin for 3D-Slicer. Random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) were used for feature selection and predictive model building in the training cohort. Three different predictive models containing conventional, radiomic, and combined models were built on the basis of the selected clinical, radiological, and radiomic features. The predictive performance of each model was evaluated through the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and the area under the curve (AUC). The predictive performance of two radiologists (A and B) and our radiomic predictive model were further investigated in the test cohort to see if radiomic predictive model could improve radiologists' performance in prediction between pGGN-like AIS/MIA and IVA.Results: Among 322 nodules, 48 (14.9%) were AIS and 102 (31.7%) were MIA with 172 (53.4%) for IVA. Age, diameter, density, and nine meaningful radiomic features were selected for model building in the training cohort. Three predictive models showed good performance in prediction between pGGN-like AIS/MIA and IVA (AUC > 0.8, P < 0.05) in both training and test cohorts. The AUC values in the test cohort were 0.824 (95% CI, 0.723–0.924), 0.833 (95% CI, 0.733–0.934), and 0.848 (95% CI, 0.750–0.946) for conventional, radiomic, and combined models, respectively. The predictive accuracy was 73.44 and 59.38% for radiologist A and radiologist B in the test cohort and was improved dramatically to 79.69 and 75.00% with the aid of our radiomic predictive model.Conclusion: The predictive models built in our study showed good predictive power with good accuracy and sensitivity, which provided a non-invasive, convenient, economic, and repeatable way for the prediction between IVA and AIS/MIA representing as pGGNs. The radiomic predictive model outperformed two radiologists in predicting pGGN-like AIS/MIA and IVA, and could significantly improve the predictive performance of the two radiologists, especially radiologist B with less experience in medical imaging diagnosis. The selected radiomic features in our research did not provide more useful information to improve the combined predictive model's performance.

Clinoptilolite is a widely distributed tectosilicate, mainly composed of Al2O3, SiO2 with exchangeable cations such as Ca, K, Mg, and Na. In this research, raw clinoptilolite was ground, gravimetrically concentrated and ion-exchanged using different concentrations of NaCl solution. Then the modified clinoptilolite powder was formulated into particles as adsorbents. The adsorbents were applied to CH4 separation in coal bed gas. The raw and modified clinoptilolites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) specific surface area. The CH4 absorptivity by raw and modified clinoptilolites was evaluated using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) to assess the CH4 separation ability. The results indicated that the ion-exchanged clinoptilolite using 0.2 mol/L NaCl solution was found to be promising for the kinetic PSA separation of CH4/N2, giving a better absorptivity for CH4 separation under different influence factors. Based on the simulated static experiments, it was indicated that both CH4 and N2 were capable of diffusing into clinoptilolite while N2 adsorption by clinoptilolite was excellent. The experiment results also indicated that ion-exchanged clinoptilolite using a 0.2 mol/L NaCl solution was the optimal adsorbent for separating CH4/N2 at the low pressure condition. From the simulated dynamic experiments, the ion-exchanged clinoptilolite using a 0.2 mol/L NaCl solution as a potential sorbent in kinetic PSA processes for N2/CH4 separation, exhibited the best performance at 648 K under 0.2 MPa within 28 min, in comparison to the raw clinoptilolite and clinoptilolite under other modification conditions. In the next phase of research, the modified clinoptilolite will be tested for CH4 separation in real coal bed gas.

Euchiloglanis davidi, an endemic species to China, is mainly distributed in the upper Yangtze River and its tributaries. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of E. davidi was first sequenced. The result showed that the circular mitogenome was 16,559 bp in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, one origin of replication on the light-strand, and one control region. These genes were in the same order as in other vertebrate species. Except ND6 and eight tRNA genes, most mitochondrial genes were encoded on the H-strand. The whole mitogenome base composition of 31.18% A, 25.12% T, 28.09% C, 15.61% G, with 56.30% AT. Phylogenetic analyses using concatenated nucleotide sequences of the 13 protein-coding genes with two different methods (Maximum likelihood and neighbor-joining analysis) both highly supported that E. davidi showed a close relationship with E. kishinouyei. This work provides basic genetic data of E. davidi which will be helpful for further researches on conservation biology and species identification.

Characterization and individual trait analysis of the focal liver lesions (FLL) is a challenging task in medical image processing and clinical site. The character analysis of a unconfirmed FLL case would be expected to benefit greatly from the accumulated FLL cases with experts’ analysis, which can be achieved by content-based medical image retrieval (CBMIR). CBMIR mainly includes discriminated feature extraction and similarity calculation procedures. Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW) (codebook-based model) has been proven to be effective for different classification and retrieval tasks. This study investigates an improved codebook model for the fined-grained medical image representation with the following three advantages: (1) instead of SIFT, we exploit the local patch (structure) as the local descriptor, which can retain all detailed information and is more suitable for the fine-grained medical image applications; (2) in order to more accurately approximate any local descriptor in coding procedure, the sparse coding method, instead of K-means algorithm, is employed for codebook learning and coded vector calculation; (3) we evaluate retrieval performance of focal liver lesions (FLL) using multiphase computed tomography (CT) scans, in which the proposed codebook model is separately learned for each phase. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by our experiments on FLL retrieval.

The physicochemical properties and potential hemostatic application of Wenchang kaolin and Maoming kaolin were inspected and evaluated. Chemical composition analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, surface area determination, X-ray diffraction, particle size, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, and zeta potential analysis were performed to quantify the physical and chemical properties of the two kaolins. The results showed that both kaolins have typical FTIR bands of kaolinite with a weight fraction for kaolinite over 90 wt%. Larger conglobate aggregates of Maoming kaolin demonstrated wider particle size distributions with two peaks at 3.17 and 35.57 μm, while the book-like Wenchang kaolin had narrow particle size distribution, with a frequent size of 5.64 μm. Furthermore, thrombelastography, the whole blood clotting tests (WBCT), plasma recalcification time (PRT) measurement, and MTT assay were performed to measure the clotting activities and biocompatibility of the two kaolins. The results showed that both kaolins could promote blood coagulation with good cytocompatibility, while Wenchang kaolin had a better procoagulant activity than Maoming kaolin. These findings demonstrated Wenchang kaolin to be a more suitable local source material for application as a hemostatic agent.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is a kind of unconventional gas. CBM often contains a great deal of air when it comes out of the well. So, it must be condensed and purified before it can be applied. In this paper, raw clinoptilolite (Cp) was treated with grinding, gravimetric concentration, and ion-exchange using different aqueous solutions of salts. Then, the modified Cp powder was prepared into particles as adsorbents. Then, the adsorbents were used for nitrogen/methane separation in pressure swing adsorption (PSA) at the same condition of 0.2 MPa and 298 K. Research results indicated that there were micropores and lots of mesopores in the Cp, and the pores were mainly slit holes formed by sheet stacking. The adsorbents of NH4-Cp, Cs-Cp, and Cu-Cp showed good equilibrium selectivity for CH4, and the equilibrium separation factors of CH4 and N2 were 2.56, 2.31, and 1.95, respectively. The adsorbents of Na-Cp and Ag-Cp showed good equilibrium selectivity for N2, and the equilibrium separation factors of N2 and CH4 were 7.25 and 6.53, respectively. Consequently, the adsorbent of Na-Cp was suitable for nitrogen/methane mixture separation, which could make the concentration of methane concentrated from 19.7% to 30.72%.

In this paper, a total variation (TV) minimization strategy is proposed to overcome the problem of sparse spatial resolution and large amounts of noise in low dose positron emission tomography (PET) imaging reconstruction. Two types of objective function were established based on two statistical models of measured PET data, least-square (LS) TV for the Gaussian distribution and Poisson-TV for the Poisson distribution. To efficiently obtain high quality reconstructed images, the alternating direction method (ADM) is used to solve these objective functions. As compared with the iterative shrinkage/thresholding (IST) based algorithms, the proposed ADM can make full use of the TV constraint and its convergence rate is faster. The performance of the proposed approach is validated through comparisons with the expectation-maximization (EM) method using synthetic and experimental biological data. In the comparisons, the results of both LS-TV and Poisson-TV are taken into consideration to find which models are more suitable for PET imaging, in particular low-dose PET. To evaluate the results quantitatively, we computed bias, variance, and the contrast recovery coefficient (CRC) and drew profiles of the reconstructed images produced by the different methods. The results show that both Poisson-TV and LS-TV can provide a high visual quality at a low dose level. The bias and variance of the proposed LS-TV and Poisson-TV methods are 20% to 74% less at all counting levels than those of the EM method. Poisson-TV gives the best performance in terms of high-accuracy reconstruction with the lowest bias and variance as compared to the ground truth (14.3% less bias and 21.9% less variance). In contrast, LS-TV gives the best performance in terms of the high contrast of the reconstruction with the highest CRC.

In single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), accurate attenuation maps are needed to perform essential attenuation compensation for high quality radioactivity estimation. Formulating the SPECT activity and attenuation reconstruction tasks as coupled signal estimation and system parameter identification problems, where the activity distribution and the attenuation parameter are treated as random variables with known prior statistics, we present a nonlinear dual reconstruction scheme based on the unscented Kalman filtering (UKF) principles. In this effort, the dynamic changes of the organ radioactivity distribution are described through state space evolution equations, while the photon-counting SPECT projection data are measured through the observation equations. Activity distribution is then estimated with sub-optimal fixed attenuation parameters, followed by attenuation map reconstruction given these activity estimates. Such coupled estimation processes are iteratively repeated as necessary until convergence. The results obtained from Monte Carlo simulated data, physical phantom, and real SPECT scans demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed method both from visual inspection of the images and a quantitative evaluation, compared to the widely used EM-ML algorithms. The dual estimation framework has the potential to be useful for estimating the attenuation map from emission data only and thus benefit the radioactivity reconstruction.

Cerebral glucose metabolism is a reliable index of neural activity and may provide evidence for brain function in healthy adults. We studied the correlation between cerebral glucose metabolism and age under the resting-state in both sexes with position emission tomography. Statistical test of age effect on cerebral glucose metabolism was performed using the statistical parametric mapping software with a voxel-by-voxel approach (p=0.05 family wise error corrected, 100-voxel threshold). The subjects consisted of 108 females (mean ± S.D. = 45 ± 10 years) and 126 males (mean ± S.D. = 49 ± 11 years). We showed here that brain activity in the frontal and temporal lobes in both sexes decreased significantly with normal aging. The glucose metabolism in the caudate bilaterally showed a negative correlation with age in males, but not in females. Few regions in males were shown with an increased glucose metabolism with age. Although the mechanisms of brain aging are still unknown, a map of brain areas susceptible to age was described in this report.
