Abstract

"Secondary doping" in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is quite effective and a frequently used method for the conductivity enhancement. This simple approach, the addition of co-solvents to the PEDOT:PSS solution before film fabrication, is an essential way to derive the high electrical performance of PEDOT:PSS, but the mechanism still remains unclear. In this study, nanoscale structural changes synchronized with the conductivity enhancement via secondary doping in PEDOT:PSS films were investigated. During secondary doping with ethylene glycol near the critical dopant concentration, non-crystalized PEDOT molecules uncoupled from PSS chains and then underwent nano-crystallization. We also investigated the response to antidepressant treatment in both groups.Patients and Methods: Forty-one patients with major depression were recruited at the University Hospital of Occupational and Environmental Health. All patients were diagnosed with major depression using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Type 2 diabetes mellitus was diagnosed according to the criteria of the Japan Diabetes Society. Six healthy controls with no history of psychiatric or physical diseases were also enrolled. Serum levels of several cytokines, growth factors, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured. The clinical symptoms of patients with major depression were assessed using the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale.Results: Significant differences in cytokines, growth factors, and hs-CRP were observed between the major depression and healthy control groups. Serum TNF-α levels were significantly higher in patients with major depression and type 2 diabetes mellitus than in those without type 2 diabetes mellitus. In the major depression group, serum IL-6 and hs-CRP levels tended to be higher in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus than in those without. Several correlations among cytokines, growth factors, and hs-CRP were observed in patients with major depression with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus. Responses to pharmacological interventions for major depression did not differ between patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus.Conclusion: Serum levels of TNF-α, hs-CRP, and IL-6 were different between patients with major depression with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus. Also, correlations were found between serum levels of cytokines, growth factors, and hs-CRP in patients with major depression. Inflammatory factors, which may be associated with growth factors, may be involved in the pathophysiology of major depression, particularly among patients with comorbid type 2 diabetes mellitus.Keywords: major depression, diabetes mellitus, cytokine, growth factor, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, brain-derived neurotrophic factor

Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments are performed on a nanoporous metal complex Cu-Trans-1,4-Cyclohexanedicarboxylic Acid (Cu-CHD) adsorbing O2 molecules to identify the spin model of the O2-based magnet realized in the host complex. It is found that the magnetic excitations of Cu-CHDs adsorbing low- and high-concentration O2 molecules are explained by different spin models, the former by spin dimers and the latter by spin trimers. By using the obtained parameters and also by assuming that the levels of the higher energy states are reduced because of the non-negligible spin dependence of the molecular potential of oxygen, the magnetization curves are explained in quantitative level., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We have demonstrated that ferroelectric polarization in a spin-driven multiferroic CuFe1-xGaxO2 with x = 0.035 can be controlled by the application of uniaxial pressure. Our neutron diffraction and in-situ ferroelectric polarization measurements have revealed that the pressure dependence of the ferroelectric polarization is explained by repopulation of three types of magnetic domains originating from the trigonal symmetry of the crystal. We conclude that the spin-driven anisotropic lattice distortion and the fixed relationship between the directions of the magnetic modulation wave vector and the ferroelectric polarization are the keys to this spin-mediated piezoelectric effect., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

WOS: 000434263000007, PubMed: 29766772, BACKGROUND Embolic strokes of undetermined source represent 20% of ischemic strokes and are associated with a high rate of recurrence. Anticoagulant treatment with rivaroxaban, an oral factor Xa inhibitor, may result in a lower risk of recurrent stroke than aspirin. METHODS We compared the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban (at a daily dose of 15 mg) with aspirin (at a daily dose of 100 mg) for the prevention of recurrent stroke in patients with recent ischemic stroke that was presumed to be from cerebral embolism but without arterial stenosis, lacune, or an identified cardioembolic source. The primary efficacy outcome was the first recurrence of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism in a time-to-event analysis; the primary safety outcome was the rate of major bleeding. RESULTS A total of 7213 participants were enrolled at 459 sites; 3609 patients were randomly assigned to receive rivaroxaban and 3604 to receive aspirin. Patients had been followed for a median of 11 months when the trial was terminated early because of a lack of benefit with regard to stroke risk and because of bleeding associated with rivaroxaban. The primary efficacy outcome occurred in 172 patients in the rivaroxaban group (annualized rate, 5.1%) and in 160 in the aspirin group (annualized rate, 4.8%) (hazard ratio, 1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.87 to 1.33; P=0.52). Recurrent ischemic stroke occurred in 158 patients in the rivaroxaban group (annualized rate, 4.7%) and in 156 in the aspirin group (annualized rate, 4.7%).
