The concept of honor plays an important role both in contemporary politics and the modern fantasy genre. This essay examines Robin Hobb's nuanced depiction of honor in the Soldier's Son series, arguing that Hobb uses the tropes of fantasy to externalize an honor system's division of private and public selves. Nevare Burvelle, the series' protagonist, becomes an unwilling locus of cultural bridging on an imagined version of the American frontier following a magical encounter with 'dishonorable' native peoples. The novel explores Burvelle's predicament while revealing the degree to which different honor systems enmesh the cultures colliding in colonial space. This study tested the possibility that hit-by-pitch events in Major League Baseball could be explained by theories of aggression. Consistent with the general aggression model, personal and situational characteristics interacted to predict these events. Pitchers were more likely to hit batters in situations that allowed them to restore justice and protect valued social identities. Higher order interactions revealed that the likelihood of being hit by a pitch in these situations depended on the background of the pitcher and the race of the batter. Consistent with the culture of honor theory, pitchers from the southern United States were more likely to hit batters in these situations, but primarily if the batter was White. Outbursts of collective violence are often (understandably) met by expressions of outrage or condemnation. 'How is it,' accounts muse, 'that ordinary people can commit such atrocities?' This article argues that an exclusive focus on the violent act can contribute little to our understanding. Instead, it seeks to elucidate the routine processes and actions that serve to render violence acceptable (even banal) as a mode of action. Exclusive identities and a powerful rhetoric of honour, pride, and shame persuade people that violence is either desirable or even necessary in a given context. Following Billig's account of banal nationalism, I argue that grasping these mundane day-to-day processes is essential for an understanding of collective violence. The article draws on research amongst caste-based movements in South India to support this argument. Key Words: violence, identity, honour, shame, caste

This article deals with the notion of honor and its role in today's military as an incentive in combat, but also as a check on the behavior on both the battlefield and in modern 'operations other than war.' First, an outline will be given of what honor is and how it relates to traditional views on military courage. After that, the Roman honor-ethic, stating that honor is a necessary incentive for courageous behavior and that it is something worth dying for, is contrasted with today's prevailing view which sees honor as something obsolete and archaic and not as a legitimate motive. The article then addresses the way honor continues to have a role in today's military, despite its diminishing role in society at large. Subsequently, the drawbacks of the military's use of the honor ethic are addressed, focusing also on the current operation in Iraq. The final section tries to find a solution to these problems.

Ben Sira, who wrote during the time when Alexander the Great was busy colonizing Asia including the Jews, equates wisdom not with acquisition of knowledge but with a fear of God and obedience to Jewish covenant known as the Torah. Sira's thinking was influenced by Hellenistic philosophical thinking but he used such to persuade his fellow Jews that resisting Hellenization was honorable as it meant preserving Jewish cultural identity.

The term hybris implies actions of verbal or physical affront, which may involve a victim. Hybris, according to N.R.E. Fisher, implies actions that inflict shame and dishonour on others, while D.M. MacDowell observes that hybris implies self-indulgent enjoyment of excess energy. The relationship between hybris and dishonour can include purely dispositional elements of self-assertion, as emphasized by Aristotle. MacDowell fails to recognize that excess energy and self indulgence require interpretation in terms of time, which balances the claims of individuals and the rights of others.

The changing conceptions of honor and masculinity during the Colombian Wars of Independence in the early 19th century are examined. Considering this, the position of the foreign women who accompanied British and Irish expeditions to join the war against Spanish rule is explored.
