LaYO3 which has phase stability at high temperature is introduced as a promising candidate for reaction-preventing crucible materials with Uranium-Zirconium (U-Zr) melt containing rare-earth elements (RE). RE is composed of rare-earth elements such as Nd, Ce, Pr and La. The LaYO3 material was synthesized by a solid-state reaction method at elevated temperature according to a pseudo-phase diagram of LaYO3 and Y2O3. Green compacts blended with La2O3 and Y2O3 powder were made by the Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) method, with La2O3 and Y2O3 powders varying with molar ratios from 1.0 to 1:2. LaYO3 synthetics were fabricated at sintering temperatures ranging from 1450°C to 1600°C. LaYO3 pellets sintered at below 1550°C showed a highly dense orthorhombic phase with a perovskite structure, resulting in an enhancing reaction-resistant effect with RE.

Abstract Matter-antimatter plasmas, such as electron-positron pair plasmas, are frequently observed in various astrophysical phenomena. In laboratory settings, electron-positron pairs have often been generated using high-Z converters irradiated by either direct laser pulses or laser-driven electron beams. Here we generate charge-neutral electron-positron beams with energies in the GeV range, utilizing bremsstrahlung gamma rays. Specifically, intense high-energy gamma rays produced electron-positron pair particles in a lead converter via the Bethe-Heitler process. The produced pair beams exhibited neutrality across all converter thicknesses throughout the energy spectrum spanning from 10 MeV to 1.8 GeV. Pairs with energies surpassing 1 GeV constituted up to 26% of the total kinetic energy within the spectrum. The experimental results were in good agreement with our Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations. These GeV-scale neutral pair particle beams have potential applications for understanding energetic astrophysical phenomena and high-energy particle physics.

Abstract While recent research has shown that holographic displays can represent photorealistic 3D holograms in real time, the difficulty in acquiring high-quality real-world holograms has limited the realization of holographic streaming systems. Incoherent holographic cameras, which record holograms under daylight conditions, are suitable candidates for real-world acquisition, as they prevent the safety issues associated with the use of lasers; however, these cameras are hindered by severe noise due to the optical imperfections of such systems. In this work, we develop a deep learning-based incoherent holographic camera system that can deliver visually enhanced holograms in real time. A neural network filters the noise in the captured holograms, maintaining a complex-valued hologram format throughout the whole process. Enabled by the computational efficiency of the proposed filtering strategy, we demonstrate a holographic streaming system integrating a holographic camera and holographic display, with the aim of developing the ultimate holographic ecosystem of the future.

Abstract The characterization of an electron–positron beam generated from the interaction of a multi-GeV electron beam with a lead plate is performed using GEANT4 simulations. The dependence of the positron beam size on driver electron beam energy and lead converter thickness is investigated in detail. A pancake-like positron beam structure is generated with a monoenergetic multi-GeV driver electron beam, with the results indicating that a 5 GeV driver electron beam with 1 nC charge can generate a positron beam with a density of 1015–1016 cm−3 at one radiation length of lead. In addition, we find that electron–positron beams generated using above-GeV electron beams have neutralities greater than 0.3 at one radiation length of lead, whereas neutralities of 0.2 are observed when using a 200 MeV electron beam. The possibility of observing plasma instabilities in experiments is also examined by comparing the plasma skin depth with the electron–positron beam size. A quasi-neutral electron–positron plasma can be produced in the interaction between a 1 nC, 5 GeV electron beam and lead with a thickness of five radiation lengths. Our findings will aid in analyzing and interpreting laser-produced electron–positron plasma for laboratory astrophysics research.

Holographic displays that are both compact and produce realistic holograms without eyestrain are still difficult to realize. Here the authors implement a steering-backlight unit and a holographic video processor to produce a realistic holographic display in a slim panel.

This paper presents a remote testbed for metallic fuel fabrication using surrogates or depleted uranium. The testbed named “remote fuel fabrication mock-up (RFFM)” was created at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and specifically designed to incorporate remote operation and maintenance. The subsystems of the RFFM are described, and test results regarding remotely conducted metallic fuel slug fabrication at the RFFM are also presented. After fabricating fuel slugs using copper ingots, their specifications and properties were analyzed and evaluated using chemical analysis, radiographic tests, and diameter and weight measurements. Analysis results showed that the fabricated metallic fuel slugs have an acceptance rate of more than 90% and a casting ratio (ratio of weight of injected metal to charged metal) of more than 0.7. Moreover, operations involving remote handling of in-cell equipment were also satisfactory.

Purpose: This study aimed to validate the newly proposed risk model in Korean patients diagnosed with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Materials and Methods: A retrospective review was performed with 1,238 patients who underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor from 2009 to 2020. We included 973 patients and categorized them into four risk groups according to the European Association of Urology (EAU) NMIBC risk stratification standards, which incorporate the World Health Organization 2004/2016 grading classification. Kaplan–Meyer survival analysis and multivariable analysis of time to progression were performed to calculate the probability of progression for all risk groups. Results: A total of 973 patients were followed for 54.85 months. Patients were classified according to the risk factors proposed by the new NMIBC risk table and stratified into low, intermediate, high, and very high-risk groups based on the table. Cancer progression into muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) in each risk group was observed in 7 (4.4%), 24 (15.2%), 76 (48.1%), and 51 (32.3%) individuals, respectively. The progression rate was distinguishable between risk groups in the Kaplan–Meier progression-free survival analysis, and higher risk was associated with a higher rate of progression. The new NMIBC risk variables were demonstrated to have prognostic value in the multivariate analysis. The very high-risk group was associated with progression to muscle-invasive disease. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the new EAU NMIBC risk group categorization is feasible in predicting the progression of NMIBC into MIBC in the Korean population and thus should be applied to clinical practice in Korea.

Objectives: Vancomycin and teicoplanin are glycopeptides with activity against Enterococcus faecium. However, studies on the clinical efficacy of teicoplanin are limited. This study aimed to compare the therapeutic efficacy of teicoplanin and vancomycin in E. faecium bacteremia. Methods: We identified patients with bloodstream infections prospectively from July 2015 to December 2016 in 14 hospitals as part of a multicenter nationwide surveillance. Patients with E. faecium monomicrobial bacteremia were selected. Teicoplanin and vancomycin groups included patients treated with either agent for ≥48 hours. The primary outcome was 30-day all-cause in-hospital mortality. The Cox proportional hazards model with inverse probability weighting was used to account for the imbalance in baseline characteristics between the two groups. Results: Among 97 patients with E. faecium bacteremia, 33 (34%) were treated with teicoplanin and 64 (66%) with vancomycin. There were no significant differences in 30-day in-hospital mortality (18.2% vs 26.6%, P = 0.358) and 7-day mortality (6.1% vs 15.6%, P = 0.212). Furthermore, multivariable analysis confirmed that the use of teicoplanin was not significantly associated with mortality (adjusted odds ratio, 0.72; 95% confidence interval, 0.28-1.86; P = 0.494). Conclusion: We found no significant differences in the clinical outcomes. These findings suggest teicoplanin as a useful alternative to vancomycin.

Purpose: We aimed to identify the genetic causes of hypospadias in children using targeted gene panel sequencing for disorders of sex development (DSD). Materials and Methods: This study included 18 twin boys with hypospadias: seven and two pairs were monozygotic and dizygotic twins, respectively, and six were discordant and three were concordant twins. Targeted gene panel sequencing for 67 known DSD genes was performed. Sequence variants were classified into five different categories, pathogenic, likely pathogenic, variants of uncertain significance, likely benign, and benign, following the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics Standards and Guidelines. Results: The mean gestational age and birth weight were 35.3±2.0 weeks and 1.96±0.61 kg, respectively, with seven patients being small for gestational age. Hypospadias was present in 12 patients, with posterior type in 33.3% and anterior type in 66.7%. In three families with twins, both siblings had hypospadias. In addition, cryptorchidism was observed in one subject. Surgical correction of hypospadias was performed at a mean age of 22.1 months. Molecular analysis identified 12 different genetic variants, including two pathogenic mutations in the AMH (p.E389*) and SRD5A2 (p.R246Q) genes, found in subjects with hypospadias, respectively. However, only heterozygous mutations were detected. Conclusions: This study did not identify a definitive genetic component contributing to the development of hypospadias; however, the findings suggest that intrauterine growth retardation may play a significant role. Background: Detecting monoclonal protein (M-protein), a hallmark of plasma cell disorders, traditionally relies on methods such as protein electrophoresis, immune-electrophoresis, and immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE). Mass spectrometry (MS)-based methods, such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) and electrospray ionization-quadrupole time-of-flight (ESI-qTOF) MS, have emerged as sensitive methods. We explored the M-protein-detection efficacies of different MS techniques. Methods: To isolate immunoglobulin and light chain proteins, six types of beads (IgG, IgA, IgM, kappa, lambda, and mixed kappa and lambda) were used to prepare samples along with CaptureSelect nanobody affinity beads (NBs). After purification, both MALDI-TOF MS and liquid chromatography coupled with Synapt G2 ESI-qTOF high-resolution MS analysis were performed. We purified 25 normal and 25 abnormal IFE samples using NBs and MALDI-TOF MS (NB-MALDI-TOF). Results: Abnormal samples showed monoclonal peaks, whereas normal samples showed polyclonal peaks. The IgG and mixed kappa and lambda beads showed monoclonal peaks following the use of daratumumab (an IgG/kappa type of monoclonal antibody) with both MALDI-TOF and ESI-qTOF MS analysis. The limits of detection for MALDI-TOF MS and ESI-qTOF MS were established as 0.1 g/dL and 0.025 g/dL, respectively. NB-MALDI-TOF and IFE exhibited comparable sensitivity and specificity (92% and 92%, respectively). Conclusions: NBs for M-protein detection, particularly with mixed kappa-lambda beads, identified monoclonal peaks with both MALDI-TOF and ESI-qTOF analyses. Qualitative analysis using MALDI-TOF yielded results comparable with that of IFE. NB-MALDI-TOF might be used as an alternative method to replace conventional tests (such as IFE) to detect M-protein with high sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) to avoid misclassification of patients with clinically significant prostate cancer (PCa) into active surveillance (AS). Materials and Methods: Patients with Gleason grade group (GG) 1 PCa on systematic biopsy who underwent mpMRI before radical prostatectomy (RP) were included. mpMRI and pathologic results were compared between the AS and NOT-AS candidates. Unfavorable disease was defined as the identification of T3-4 disease or GG upgrade in the RP specimen. We established an ideal cutoff Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) score for predicting unfavorable disease, and analyzed the location of index lesions on mpMRI. Results: PI-RADS scores were not significantly different between AS candidates (n=64) and NOT-AS candidates (n=136; p=0.629). Among 64 AS candidates, GG upgrading and unfavorable disease were diagnosed after RP in 24 (37.5%) and 25 (39.1%) patients, respectively. The rate of unfavorable disease was greater for patients with a PI-RADS score of 5 (83.3%) than in those with a score ≤4 (34.5%; p=0.030). Moreover, most PI-RADS 5 lesions in AS candidates were located in the anterior half of the prostate, with GG upgrading on targeted biopsy in 75.0% of cases. Conclusions: Among the patients with GG 1 PCa, PI-RADS scores did not differ significantly between AS and NOT-AS candidates. Nonetheless, AS candidates with PI-RADS 5 lesions were diagnosed with unfavorable disease in >80% of RP specimens. Significant cancer located in the anterior half of the prostate including the transitional zone can be missed by systematic biopsy.

Purpose: To investigate the validity and reliability of a home-based, guardian-conducted video voiding test for assessing postoperative voiding function after hypospadias surgery. Materials and Methods: In a single center, patients who had undergone urethroplasty by a single surgeon and postoperative uroflowmetry and video voiding tests conducted between 2008 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Urinary stream was categorized into five grades by three pediatric urologists in a blinded manner. The primary outcome was statistical correlation across raters as measured by Spearman correlation coefficient to validate the interpretation of the video voiding test. The secondary outcome was the reliability of the voiding video test compared with maximum urinary flow rate assessed by uroflowmetry. Results: Thirty-one patients with hypospadias were enrolled. The patients' average ages were 12.3±3.2 months (range, 8–21 months) and 42.8±3.9 months (range, 35–48 months) at the time of surgery and voiding video tests, respectively. Hypospadias was anterior, penile, and proximal in 1 (3.2%), 18 (58.1%), and 12 (38.7%) patients, respectively. The number of patients with each voiding stream grade was as follows: very poor, 4; poor, 4; fair, 13; good, 4; and very good, 6. Purpose: This study was conducted to compare the accuracy of bi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (bpMRI) with high b-value (b=1,000 s/mm2, b1000) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to that of bpMRI with ultra-high b-value (b=1,800 s/mm2, b1800) DWI to detect clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa). Materials and Methods: A total of 408 patients with suspected PCa were evaluated by bpMRI prior to biopsy. One reader retrospectively reviewed all images for confirmation of Prostate Imaging–Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) score. Cognitive magnetic resonance/ultrasound fusion target biopsy was done for all visible lesions (PI-RADS 3–5). Systematic biopsy was done for all cases. The csPCa detection rates were compared according to the bpMRI protocol (with/without b1800 DWI) or PI-RADS score. The accuracy of PI-RADS score was estimated using receiver operating characteristics curve. The signal intensity (SI) ratio (visible lesion/surrounding background) was evaluated. Results: Among 164 men confirmed having PCa, 102 had csPCa (Gleason score≥7). Proportions of PI-RADS score 1–2/3/4/5 without b1800 DWI (n=133) and with b1800 DWI (n=275) were 19.5%/57.9%/15.8%/6.8% and 21.1%/48.7%/22.2%/8.0%, respectively. csPCa detection rates with/without b1800 DWI were 27.6%/19.5% (p=0.048), respectively. Multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae emerge through the modification of core genome loci by interspecies homologous recombinations, and acquisition of gene cassettes. Both occurred in the otherwise contrasting histories of the antibiotic-resistant S. pneumoniae lineages PMEN3 and PMEN9. A single PMEN3 clade spread globally, evading vaccine-induced immunity through frequent serotype switching, whereas locally circulating PMEN9 clades independently gained resistance. Both lineages repeatedly integrated Tn916-type and Tn1207.1-type elements, conferring tetracycline and macrolide resistance, respectively, through homologous recombination importing sequences originating in other species. A species-wide dataset found over 100 instances of such interspecific acquisitions of resistance cassettes and flanking homologous arms. Phylodynamic analysis of the most commonly sampled Tn1207.1-type insertion in PMEN9, originating from a commensal and disrupting a competence gene, suggested its expansion across Germany was driven by a high ratio of macrolide-to-β-lactam consumption. Hence, selection from antibiotic consumption was sufficient for these atypically large recombinations to overcome species boundaries across the pneumococcal chromosome.

The purpose of this research is to examine the importance of understanding employees' self-regulatory capacities and supervisors' leadership styles in enhancing employee knowledge-sharing and mitigating knowledge concealment through improvements in occupational self-efficacy. This research conducted quantitative methodology to investigate the relationships among leadership style, occupational self-efficacy, knowledge-related behavior, and self-regulatory focus. The authors conducted an online survey to investigate factors influencing the knowledge behavior of employees, with a sample of 299 employees in South Korea. This research revealed that both transformational and transactional leadership indirectly influence subordinates' knowledge-sharing and -hiding by enhancing occupational self-efficacy. Also, this research found that moderated mediation of subordinates' self-regulatory focus has significant effects on the relationships. This research emphasizes the importance of applying an employee's psychological state, including occupational self-efficacy, personal traits, and regulatory behavior, when assessing the effectiveness of leadership on employees' knowledge-related behavior. The research has practical implications for human resource development. It emphasizes the importance of monitoring employees' sense of professional self-efficacy. It also deals with the need for transparent rewards and performance evaluations to effectively manage the double-edged sword of transactional leadership.
