Abstract

This document contains a series of 2001 research briefs, Catalyst: Inquiry for Change (Volume 1), that is part of a research project supported by the Institute for Community College Development at Cornell University, New York. The Institute's research projects are stakeholder driven for the purpose of researching areas of the most interest to community colleges and their peer institutions in terms of social, economic, and policy considerations for bringing about change. The Catalyst offers Institute research project summaries. The Catalyst will be disseminated to community college presidents, senior administrators in institutional research, student development, business, academic affairs, and faculty. The first in the series of research briefs produced in 2001 (Volume 1, Number 1) is titled: "Performance Based Funding: What Indicators Do U.S. Community College Systems Use?" (Ruth A. Hopkins). The second brief in the series (Volume 1, Number 2) is titled: "The Relationship Between Institutional Mission, Service, and Service-Learning at Community Colleges in New York State" (Esther Prins). Abstract

Mice homozygous for the beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) were viable and fertile, but mutant mice weighed 15%-20% less than wild-type controls. Neurological evaluation of homozygous mice revealed decreased locomotor activity and forelimb grip strength, indicating impaired neuronal and muscular function. They also exhibited gliosis at 14 weeks of age, enforcing previous result that misprocessed APP leads to impaired neuronal function.

Abstract

The Breastfeeding Network commissioned an evaluation of their Drugs in Breastmilk service. This service provides information to parents, professionals and supporters about the level of risk of taking medications or having medical procedures whilst breastfeeding. The evaluation sought to explore who is using the service, why they are accessing it, what information they are receiving and their views of the service. It also explored the impact the service upon maternal wellbeing, professional practice and ultimately breastfeeding duration. Key Conclusions: The gap in service identified in 2007 remains. BfN continues to fill this gap by providing a service to mothers seeking advice around breastfeeding and medications. The service is highly valued by breastfeeding organisations, mothers, professionals, and mother supporters as giving accurate, reassuring, evidence-based information. It enables mothers to make an informed choice about continuing to breastfeed, and also look after their own health and that of their baby, as if forced to choose many women would prioritise their baby and breastfeeding rather than take prescribed medication. As well as protecting physical health, the service has an invaluable impact on maternal wellbeing. In its present format the service is not sustainable. Further long-term funding is vitally important to secure and expand the service so that more mothers can benefit.

9. Process and Results of an Immunization Requirement at the University of Rochester.

The University of Rochester (New York) has implemented a process to ensure that all students receive necessary immunizations. The immunization requirement is combined with a required health history form and has helped the college facilitate significant increases in immunity to rubella, measles, mumps, and tetanus.
