Bu çalışma Kuzeydoğu Akdeniz’de yakalanan ve kütük balığı olarak bilinen Hoplostethus mediterraneus türünün total boy-ağırlık ilişkilerinin saptanması amacıyla yapılmıştır. Kütük balığına ait toplam 380 örnek (143 dişi-237 erkek) ticari trol teknesi ile uluslararası sularda yapılan avcılıkta yaklaşık 200-380 m derinliklerde hedef dışı tür olarak elde edilmiştir. Yakalanan balıkların total boy ve ağırlıkları sırasıyla dişilerde 6,4-15,2 cm, 3,4-43,8 g ve erkeklerde 6,5-12,3 cm, 3,4-23,7 g olarak bulunmuştur. Kütük balığına ait total boy-ağırlık ilişkileri tüm bireylerde W=0,013*L2.9841, r2=0,9493 ve SEb=0,039, dişi bireylerde W=0,0128*L2.9929, r2=0,9388 ve ve SEb=0,068, erkek bireylerde W=0,0131*L2.9827, r2=0,9446 ve SEb=0,047 olarak bulunmuştur. H. mediterraneus türünün b değerine göre erkek, dişi ve tüm bireylerde izometrik büyüme gözlenmiştir (t-test: P > 0,05)

Variation in otolith shape (otolith polymorphism) in Hoplostethus atlanticus, Hoplostethus mediterraneus, Paratrichichthys trailli, Pagrus major and Trachurus murphyi, quantified using principal components analysis based on Fourier transform decompositions of outlines of otolith shape, was particularly high among the samples of H. atlanticus from the North Atlantic, New Zealand, Australia and Namibia. The scatter was uniform, however, and did not show any significant differences among regions. The implication drawn from the high variability in otolith shape of H. atlanticus was that otolith shape polymorphism was maintained by some form of balancing selection across many small local environments which may result in k-selection with consequent poor response by H. atlanticus to maximum sustainable yield harvesting strategies. The variation in otolith shape defined by the otolith morphospace of the five species that were measured, showed a decreasing trend in scatter (i.e. decreasing complexity of shape) proceeding from the species with the deepest habitat (H. atlanticus) to the most shallow (T. murphyi).

20 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables, supplementary material http://www.int-res.com/articles/suppl/m402p213_app.pdf, Temporal variations in feeding habits and trophic levels of 3 deep-sea fishes: Hoplostethus mediterraneus, Hymenocephalus italicus and Nezumia aequalis, were investigated off the Archipelago of Cabrera (Algerian Basin). These species are representative of the 3 main trophic guilds found at bathyal depths: plankton feeders, suprabenthos feeders and epi-endobenthos feeders. Samples were collected during 6 trawl surveys at bi-monthly intervals from August 2003 to June 2004, between 550 and 750 m depths. Stomach content and stable isotope analyses were performed to detect temporal variations in diet. Because fish were immediately fixed in 10% formalin, a parallel experiment comparing isotope composition in fixed and freshly frozen tissues was carried out. H. mediterraneus mainly preyed on isopods throughout the sampling period and to a lesser extent on amphipods and mysids, although mixing models revealed high consumption of mesopelagic fish in winter and spring. H. italicus fed on mysids and amphipods that live in the benthic boundary layer, while N. aequalis exhibited a more benthic diet composed of benthopelagic and benthic prey (e.g. tanaids and polychaetes). Temporal variation was observed in the diet of H. mediterraneus, with February being the period of change in feeding habits. Temporal changes were also evident, though weaker than in H. mediterraneus, in the diets of the 2 macrourids, H. italicus and N. aequalis. Patterns of temporal change in fish diets follow temporal variations in prey, which are stronger in mesopelagic than in suprabenthic or benthic fauna. Temporal variations in tissue δ15N were detected in the 3 species, with the lowest values occurring in September and the highest in April to June. In general, different time lags were detected between the isotopic turnover time of consumers and that of their diets (prey) at a monthly time scale, showing that assimilation times depend on species behaviour and metabolism. Assimilation times are brief in H. mediterraneus but last up to 2 mo in the benthic feeder N. aequalis. The experiment comparing fixed versus frozen tissues showed that formalin did not affect δ15N values after 6, 12 and 24 mo of preservation, while δ13C signatures were depleted to different extents in the 3 species compared with controls

The oocytes of the abyssal Teleost, Hoplostethus mediterraneus were studied. Four stages of growth were observed and the oocytes of all the stages were surrounded by follicular cells and had several nucleoli in the nucleus. In the oocytes of the II degrees stage, vacuoles without contents, in oocytes of the III degrees stage several vacuoles with a basophilic contents and small yolk globules were identified. General and basic proteins, ribonucleoproteins, acid proteoglycans with -COOH groups were recognized in the cytoplasm, in the nucleoli of oocytes in the II degrees stage and in the vacuolar contents of oocytes in the III degrees stage. In the follicular cells, in the pellucid zone, in the yolk globules, from their beginning, glycoproteins were present. Positivity, for all lectins used, was revealed in the follicular cells and in the four stages of oocytes growth. alpha-D-glucose and alpha-D-mannose binding sites were in the pellucid zone and in the initial yolk globules. In the lather galactose and beta-N-acetyl glucosamine were present too. nNOS and VIP immunopositivity revealed at the periphery of the cytoplasm and at network of nerve fibres between oocytes, suggests NO is involved in a mechanism of regulation of the gametogenesis and of the spawning.

Silver Roughy, Hoplostethus mediterraneus (Cuvier, 1829) (Pisces; Thachichthyidae), is a benthopelagic cosmopolite fish. The samples of endolynph were collected from ten specimens with total length ranging between 14,7 cm and 22,2 cm, grouped in classes of 2 centimetres. Inductively Coupled Plasma - Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) Perkin-Elmer OPTIMA 3100 XL was used for the investigation of the ionic composition. A decreasing gradient in the ionic concentration [?g/l] among (versus) the smallest and biggest length classes was recorded for Ba, Cd, Mg, Na, Mn, B and Al.

On April 2010, juvenile specimens of Mediterranean slimehead, Hoplostethus mediterraneus Cuvier, 1829 were captured by bottom trawls at a depth of 150 m in the southern Adriatic Sea at 42º27´34, 64´´N and 17º30´55, 55´´E. These represent the first documented records of this species in the Adriatic Sea.

The beryciform fish Hoplostethus mediterraneus is a species discarded from the southern Portuguese coastal fisheries. It is taken as by-catch by deep water trawls, at depths of between 234 m and 618 m. This species is a benthopelagic feeder, preying mainly on crustaceans. The dominant prey species encountered were the euphausid Meganyctiphanes norvegica and the amphipod Anilocra physodes. It seems that H. mediterraneus is an opportunistic rather than a selective feeder.

The beryciform fish Hoplostethus mediterraneus (Beryciformes: Trachichthyidae) is a species discarded from the southern Portuguese coastal fisheries. It is taken as by-catch by deep water trawls, at depths of between 234 and 618 m, more than 80% being taken at depths of between 234 and 422 m. Immature fish ranged from 4 to 13 cm in length and were present at all seasons. Of the mature individuals, males ranged from 7 to 17 cm and females from 7 to 21 cm. From autumn until spring, fish with gonads at various stages of maturation were present, although there were no specimens with mature gonads.
