This article proposes that higher cognitive skills, emotional intelligence, and digital literacy are key competencies that promote transferable skills applicable across diverse industries and markets. It provides recommendations for how the higher education community can strategically cultivate these timeless yet critical competencies while also leveraging innovations like artificial intelligence (AI). The University of Louisiana System's core competencies initiative demonstrates a framework outlining essential skills for lifelong success. As jobs rapidly evolve with advancing AI, adaptability becomes key, and core competencies ready graduates for new challenges by developing transportable human strengths. By upholding core competencies while innovating, higher education can fulfill its vital purpose of empowering students to define their own success despite disruption.

Spherical tokamaks (STs) have many desirable features that make them a suitable choice for fusion power plants. To understand their confinement properties, accurate calculation of turbulent micro-instabilities is necessary for tokamak design. Presented is a novel surrogate model for Micro-tearing modes (MTMs), the micro-instability thought to be dominant in high beta STs. Direct numerical calculation of micro-instabilities is computationally expensive and is a significant bottleneck in integrated plasma modelling. The considerable number of geometric and thermodynamic parameters, the interactions that influence these coefficients and the resolutions needed to accurately resolve these modes, makes direct numerical simulation for parameter space exploration computationally extremely challenging. However, this and the dearth of accurate reduced physics models for MTMs makes it suitable for surrogate modelling using Gaussian Process Regression, a modern machine learning technique. This paper outlines the further development of a data-driven reduced-order model across a spherical tokamak reactor-relevant parameter space utilising Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and classification; techniques from machine learning. To build the original simple GP model these two components were used in an active learning loop to maximise the efficiency of data acquisition thus minimising computational cost. The `simple' GP was seen to show a plateau of fidelity with more data and to be under-confident, particular in areas of parameter space close to marginal stability. It is postulated that the presence of multiple sub-types of MTM could be the root cause, with the underlying function being less smooth than expected. An expansion of the model using clustering algorithms to find optimal sub models using a mixture of experts approach is shown to greatly improve the variances in the outputs of the GP model., Comment: Submitted to the IAEA FEC 2023 conference

"The Oxford Handbook of International Studies Pedagogy" brings together world class scholars to describe and analyze a wide array of pedagogical approaches and developments in International Studies. It reflects the extraordinary creativity visible in the ways instructors in International Studies interact, engage, and struggle with the students in their classrooms. The first section of the volume exposes readers to different worldviews, teaching worlds, and methods that enable a more diverse set of considerations when thinking about the international. Chapters in this section demonstrate a set of pedagogical practices that can allow non-western perspectives to emerge and to be valued. This maintains import beyond simply enabling broader literatures, contexts, and experiences to enrich the study of the international--it also is a critical component of adopting a set of humanizing pedagogies where care, inclusion, and compassion are modelled. At the heart of some of the contributions is a recognition that being more thoughtful and engaging of our students in constructing the learning environment is fundamental to enabling a broader set of worldviews and teaching worlds to emerge. The second section of the volume focuses on teaching and learning inside and outside the classroom. The chapters in this section fundamentally talk about strategies, and particular experiences that people have had, and how they relate those experiences either to their own positions or how they have understood them to be effective. While the chapters tend to focus on practice, it is also apparent how contributors embed their work in a set of values around equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation. Ultimately, accepting the way we teach matters, and this volume seeks to empower those teaching international studies to engage their students and prepare them to understand and work within a complicated and challenging international system.

Spherical tokamaks (STs) have many desirable features that make them an attractive choice for a future fusion power plant. Power plant viability is intrinsically related to plasma heat and particle confinement and this is often determined by the level of micro-instability driven turbulence. Accurate calculation of the properties of turbulent micro-instabilities is therefore critical for tokamak design, however, the evaluation of these properties is computationally expensive. The considerable number of geometric and thermodynamic parameters and the high resolutions required to accurately resolve these instabilities makes repeated use of direct numerical simulations in integrated modelling workflows extremely computationally challenging and creates the need for fast, accurate, reduced-order models. This paper outlines the development of a data-driven reduced-order model, often termed a {\it surrogate model} for the properties of micro-tearing modes (MTMs) across a spherical tokamak reactor-relevant parameter space utilising Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and classification; techniques from machine learning. These two components are used in an active learning loop to maximise the efficiency of data acquisition thus minimising computational cost. The high-fidelity gyrokinetic code GS2 is used to calculate the linear properties of the MTMs: the mode growth rate, frequency and normalised electron heat flux; core components of a quasi-linear transport model. Five-fold cross-validation and direct validation on unseen data is used to ascertain the performance of the resulting surrogate models.

Abstract Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) is linked to diverse aging-related diseases, including hematologic malignancy and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). While CHIP is common among older adults, the underlying factors driving its development are largely unknown. To address this, we performed whole-exome sequencing on 8,374 blood DNA samples collected from 4,187 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC) participants over a median follow-up of 21 years. During this period, 735 participants developed incident CHIP. Splicing factor genes (SF3B1, SRSF2, U2AF1, and ZRSR2) and TET2 CHIP grow significantly faster than DNMT3A non-R882 clones. We find that age at baseline and sex significantly influence the incidence of CHIP, while ASCVD and other traditional ASCVD risk factors do not exhibit such associations. Additionally, baseline synonymous passenger mutations are strongly associated with CHIP status and are predictive of new CHIP clone acquisition and clonal growth over extended follow-up, providing valuable insights into clonal dynamics of aging hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. This study also reveals associations between germline genetic variants and incident CHIP. Our comprehensive longitudinal assessment yields insights into cell-intrinsic and -extrinsic factors contributing to the development and progression of CHIP clones in older adults.

10. Examining the Changes in Success Rates of Texas Basic Peace Officer Trainees on the State Licensing Examination

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if there has been a change to the scores on the Texas State Peace Officer Licensing Examination over a given time, and if been a so, identify subjects where scores improved or declined. By recognizing stagnation or declination in test scores, interventions can be designed to enhance the adult learning experience for peace officer candidates. To determine if a change over time occurred, I utilized a non-experimental, longitudinal, descriptive quantitative analysis research design. My results showed that there was a change in 8 of 23 topics investigated. 7 topics showed a decline in pass rate over the study period and 1 topic showed an increase in pass rate over the study period. The study suggests that topics showing a decline in test scores for academy students correspond with changes in delivery methods brought about by staff changes and the global pandemic. It further suggests that increases in test scores for academy students correspond with increases in curricular hours and added topic emphasis. In this manuscript we present the recently developed flexible framework for building both fluid and electron kinetic models of the tokamak Scrape-Off Layer in 1D - ReMKiT1D (Reactive Multi-fluid and Kinetic Transport in 1D). The framework can handle systems of non-linear ODEs, various 1D PDEs arising in fluid modelling, as well as PDEs arising from the treatment of the electron kinetic equation. As such, the framework allows for flexibility in fluid models of the Scrape-Off Layer while allowing the easy addition of kinetic electron effects. We focus on presenting both the high-level design decisions that allow for model flexibility, as well as the most important implementation aspects. A significant number of verification and performance tests are presented, as well as a step-by-step walkthrough of a simple example for setting up models using the Python interface.

We present herein the results of a linear gyrokinetic analysis of electromagnetic microinstabilites in the conceptual high-$\beta$, reactor-scale, tight-aspect-ratio tokamak STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production, https://step.ukaea.uk). We examine a range of flux surfaces between the deep core and the pedestal top for two candidate flat-top operating points of the prototype device. Local linear gyrokinetic analysis is performed to determine the type of microinstabilities that arise under these reactor-relevant conditions. We find that the equilibria are dominated at ion binormal scales by a hybrid version of the Kinetic Ballooning Mode (KBM) instability that has significant linear drive contributions from the ion temperature gradient and from trapped electrons, while collisional Microtearing Modes (MTMs) are sub-dominantly also unstable at similar binormal scales. The hybrid-KBM and MTM exhibit very different radial scales. We study the sensitivity of these instabilities to physics parameters, and discuss potential mechanisms for mitigating them. The results of this investigation are compared to a small set of similar conceptual reactor designs in the literature. A detailed benchmark of the linear results is performed using three gyrokinetic codes; alongside extensive resolution testing and sensitivity to numerical parameters providing confidence in the results of our calculations, and paving the way for detailed nonlinear studies in a companion article.

Differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF) is a widely used technique for determining the apparent melting temperature (Tma) of a purified protein. Here, we present a protocol for performing and optimizing DSF experiments. We describe steps for designing and performing the experiment, analyzing data, and optimization. We provide benchmarks for typical Tmas and ΔTmas, standard assay conditions, and upper and lower limits of commonly altered experimental variables. We also detail common pitfalls of DSF and ways to avoid, identify, and overcome them.

BACKGROUND: Premature menopause is a risk factor for accelerated cardiovascular aging, but underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study investigated the role of leukocyte telomere length (LTL), a marker of cellular aging and genomic instability, in the association of premature menopause with cardiovascular disease. METHODS: Participants from the UK Biobank and Womens Health Initiative with complete reproductive history and LTL measurements were included. Primary analyses tested the association between age at menopause and LTL using multivariable-adjusted linear regression. Secondary analyses stratified women by history of gynecologic surgery. Mendelian randomization was used to infer causal relationships between LTL and age at natural menopause. Multivariable-adjusted Cox regression and mediation analyses tested the joint associations of premature menopause and LTL with incident coronary artery disease. RESULTS: This study included 130 254 postmenopausal women (UK Biobank: n=122 224; Womens Health Initiative: n=8030), of whom 4809 (3.7%) had experienced menopause before age 40. Earlier menopause was associated with shorter LTL (meta-analyzed ß=-0.02 SD/5 years of earlier menopause [95% CI, -0.02 to -0.01]; P=7.2×10-12). Background: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk estimation based on the pooled cohort equation (PCE) overestimates in population-based cohorts. Whether it performs equally across disaggregated demographics in health care populations is less known. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to recalibrate PCE and rederive prevention thresholds in a contemporary health care system and evaluate its performance across sociodemographics. Methods: We retrospectively inspected electronic health records between 2010 to 2012 and 2020 to 2022 within Mass General Brigham health care in New England region. We compared performance of the original vs recalibrated PCE measured by calibration, discrimination, reclassification rate, and net benefit among 160,926 patients aged 40 to 79 years and without prior ASCVD or lipid-lowering medication. Results: Of the 160,926 patients (mean age: 54.6 ± 8.6 years; 61.4% female), 20,373 (12.7%) developed ASCVD over 10 years. The original PCE globally underestimated ASCVD risk (observed vs predicted incidence rate: 0.13 vs 0.05). Recalibration upclassified risk primarily among individuals with low-to-borderline risk by the original PCE and additionally identified 40% of patients who had undergone ASCVD events yet deemed statin-ineligible based on the original PCE. Treatment thresholds yielding the greatest net benefit were ≥24.0% for women (+23.3%) vs ≥26.0% for men (+18.7%), whereas ≥26.0% for White or other race (+24.7%) vs ≥14.0% Black or African American (+12.5%), respectively. Specifically, Hispanic or Latino and non-Hispanic Black patients conferred the greatest sensitivity improvement at ≥12.3% threshold compared to higher ≥23.6% among non-Hispanic Asian or Pacific Islanders. Generally, lower thresholds earlier in life were optimal. Conclusions: Recalibration and personalized treatment thresholds derived within a health system may improve prevention treatment allocation efficiency.

Value added lignin rich waste sludges from biorefinery processes are, as yet untapped valuable feedstocks that can be reformed into clean, high quality solid fuels. By water washing sludges produced from base hydrolyzed waste, a material stripped of water-soluble alkali and alkaline earth metals (ash) can be obtained. This work shows how leached bagasse, barley and wheat straw sludges can be valorised into clean, low ash solid biofuels that can be used to supplement global energy demands. Repurposed lignin rich sludges of 1.00–2.00 mm particle size feedstocks were found to exhibit calorific values +17.3 %, +16.8 % and +11.7 % for bagasse, wheat, and barley straw sludges, respectively higher than their untreated waste counterparts. LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with an expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA’s H3 rocket. LiteBIRD is planned to orbit the Sun–Earth Lagrangian point L2, where it will map the cosmic microwave background polarization over the entire sky for three years, with three telescopes in 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz, to achieve an unprecedented total sensitivity of 2.2 μK-arcmin, with a typical angular resolution of 0.5◦ at 100 GHz. The primary scientific objective of LiteBIRD is to search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. We provide an overview of the LiteBIRD project, including scientific objectives, mission and system requirements, operation concept, spacecraft and payload module design, expected scientific outcomes, potential design extensions, and synergies with other projects.

LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led strategic large-class satellite mission designed to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background and Galactic foregrounds from 34 to 448 GHz across the entire sky from L2 in the late 2020s. The scientific payload includes three telescopes which are called the low-, mid-, and high-frequency telescopes each with their own receiver that covers a portion of the mission's frequency range. The low frequency telescope will map synchrotron radiation from the Galactic foreground and the cosmic microwave background. We discuss the design, fabrication, and characterization of the low-frequency focal plane modules for low-frequency telescope, which has a total bandwidth ranging from 34 to 161 GHz. There will be a total of 4 different pixel types with 8 overlapping bands to cover the full frequency range. These modules are housed in a single low-frequency focal plane unit which provides thermal isolation, mechanical support, and radiative baffling for the detectors. The module design implements multi-chroic lenslet-coupled sinuous antenna arrays coupled to transition edge sensor bolometers read out with frequency-domain mulitplexing. While this technology has strong heritage in ground-based cosmic microwave background experiments, the broad frequency coverage, low optical loading conditions, and the high cosmic ray background of the space environment require further development of this technology to be suitable for LiteBIRD. 30. Lone mothers' experiences of caregiving : a qualitative study using the Parent Development Interview

- Abstract
Aim: This qualitative study aimed to investigate the caregiving experiences of lone mothers attending a Parent Toddler Group (PTG), by analysing Parent Development Interviews (PDI) using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Method: This project was part of a wider service evaluation of PTGs carried out between 2003 and 2019 in a third-sector mental health service. A sample of 7 lone mothers was purposively selected from the wider pool of toddler group attendees. All participants had completed a 'baseline' PDI on entering the group and these were audio recorded and then transcribed. Data was analysed using IPA. Results: The findings included some novel themes specific to lone mothers of toddlers, relating to managing their children's need to be in control and difficulties around separation. Other themes echoed those in previous literature. Participants expressed feelings of isolation and being overwhelmed by lone parenting, as well as many struggling with mental health issues and histories of trauma. Conclusion: This study showed that the lived experiences of lone mothers are nuanced, challenging societal assumptions about this group as homogeneous. Lone mothers can be vulnerable and continue to be in need of specialist services, such as the PTGs, that can help them with their parenting, alongside support from family and friends.

Abstract Little is known about SARS-CoV-2 infection risk in African countries with high levels of infection-driven immunity and low vaccine coverage. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 349 participants from 52 households in The Gambia between March 2021 and June 2022, with routine weekly SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR and 6-monthly SARS-CoV-2 serology. Attack rates of 45% and 57% were seen during Delta and Omicron BA.1 waves respectively. Eighty-four percent of RT-PCR-positive infections were asymptomatic. Children under 5-years had a lower incidence of infection than 18-49-year-olds. One prior SARS-CoV-2 infection reduced infection risk during the Delta wave only, with immunity from ≥2 prior infections required to reduce the risk of infection with early Omicron lineage viruses. In an African population with high levels of infection-driven immunity and low vaccine coverage, we find high attack rates during SARS-CoV-2 waves, with a high proportion of asymptomatic infections and young children remaining relatively protected from infection.

The breeding of Cherax spp., initially conducted in Australia, has aroused interest in Europe and Italy over the past two decades. The use of these species in aquaculture has led to the study of their nutritional properties to evaluate the commercial potential and to identify biochemical haemolymphatic parameters which may be of use when monitoring the health status of farmed animals. Moisture, ash, lipid, protein and fatty acid contents of the abdomen muscle of Cherax destructor and Cherax quadricarinatus were evaluated in this study and compared with other crustacean species. Haemolymphatic levels of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and lactate dehydrogenase were also measured. The two species did not show significant differences in nutritional or biochemical haemolymphatic parameters (except for glucose) and were found to possess good nutritional values for human consumption.

- Abstract
Collaborative Autoethnography (CAE) is an emerging practice that combines group interaction with qualitative research. Group projects are often deployed in course design to maximize the value of collaborative learning environments. Using existing scholarship, we describe best practices for group projects that apply principles of CAE. To advance the premise of the paper beyond descriptive summaries of pedagogical inquiry, we utilize a best practices mechanism to present a coherent guide for project collaborators to use in various classroom settings. The best practices proposed are research validated by existing CAE and project management literature.

Digital Frequency-Domain Multiplexing (DfMux) is a technique that uses MHz superconducting resonators and Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) arrays to read out sets of transition edge sensors. DfMux has been used by several Cosmic Microwave Background experiments, including most recently POLARBEAR-2 and SPT-3 G with multiplexing factors as high as 68, and is the baseline readout technology for the planned satellite mission LiteBIRD. Here, we present recent work focused on improving DfMux readout noise, reducing parasitic impedance, and improving sensor operation. We have achieved a substantial reduction in stray impedance by integrating the sensors, resonators, and SQUID array onto a single-carrier board operated at 250 mK. This also drastically simplifies the packaging of the cryogenic components and leads to better-controlled crosstalk. We demonstrate a low readout noise level of 8.6 pA / Hz 1 1 / 2, which was made possible by operating the SQUID array at a reduced temperature and with a low dynamic impedance. This is a factor of two improvement compared to the achieved readout noise level in currently operating Cosmic Microwave Background experiments using DfMux and represents a critical step toward maturation of the technology for the next generation of instruments.

Biobanks facilitate genome-wide association studies (GWASs), which have mapped genomic loci across a range of human diseases and traits. However, most biobanks are primarily composed of individuals of European ancestry. We introduce the Global Biobank Meta-analysis Initiative (GBMI)-a collaborative network of 23 biobanks from 4 continents representing more than 2.2 million consented individuals with genetic data linked to electronic health records. GBMI meta-analyzes summary statistics from GWASs generated using harmonized genotypes and phenotypes from member biobanks for 14 exemplar diseases and endpoints. This strategy validates that GWASs conducted in diverse biobanks can be integrated despite heterogeneity in case definitions, recruitment strategies, and baseline characteristics. This collaborative effort improves GWAS power for diseases, benefits understudied diseases, and improves risk prediction while also enabling the nomination of disease genes and drug candidates by incorporating gene and protein expression data and providing insight into the underlying biology of human diseases and traits.

LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with an expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA's H3 rocket. LiteBIRD is planned to orbit the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2, where it will map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the entire sky for three years, with three telescopes in 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz, to achieve an unprecedented total sensitivity of 2.2$\mu$K-arcmin, with a typical angular resolution of 0.5$^\circ$ at 100 GHz. The primary scientific objective of LiteBIRD is to search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. Abstract Therapeutic ultrasound can be used to trigger the on-demand release of chemotherapeutic drugs from gold nanoparticles (GNPs). In the previous work, our group achieved doxorubicin (DOX) release from the surface of GNPS under low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) exposure. However, the specific release kinetics of ultrasound-triggered DOX release from GNPs is not known. Here, we present a release kinetics study of DOX from GNPs under ultrasound exposure for the first time. A novel dialysis membrane setup was designed to quantify DOX release from LIPUS-activated GNPs at 37.0 °C and 43.4 °C (hyperthermia temperature range). Contributions of thermal and non-thermal mechanisms of LIPUS-triggered DOX release were also quantified. Non-thermal mechanisms accounted for 40 ± 7% and 34 ± 5% of DOX release for 37.0 °C and 43.4 °C trials, respectively. DOX release under LIPUS exposure was found to follow Korsmeyer–Peppas (K–P) kinetics, suggesting a shift from a Fickian (static) to a non-Fickian (dynamic) release profile with the addition of non-thermal interactions. DOX release was attributed to an anomalous diffusion release mechanism from the GNP surface. A finite element model was also developed to quantify the acoustic radiation force, believed to be the driving force of non-thermal DOX release inside the dialysis bag.

Digital Frequency-Domain Multiplexing (DfMux) is a technique that uses MHz superconducting resonators and Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) arrays to read out sets of Transition Edge Sensors. DfMux has been used by several Cosmic Microwave Background experiments, including most recently POLARBEAR-2 and SPT-3G with multiplexing factors as high as 68, and is the baseline readout technology for the planned satellite mission LiteBIRD. Here, we present recent work focused on improving DfMux readout noise, reducing parasitic impedance, and improving sensor operation. We have achieved a substantial reduction in stray impedance by integrating the sensors, resonators, and SQUID array onto a single carrier board operated at 250 mK. This also drastically simplifies the packaging of the cryogenic components and leads to better-controlled crosstalk. We demonstrate a low readout noise level of 8.6 pA/Hz$^{-1/2}$, which was made possible by operating the SQUID array at a reduced temperature and with a low dynamic impedance. This is a factor of two improvement compared to the achieved readout noise level in currently operating Cosmic Microwave Background experiments using DfMux and represents a critical step toward maturation of the technology for the next generation of instruments.

47. Listening-Related Fatigue in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students: Understanding and Managing the 'Fatigue Factor'

Fatigue is often defined as a mood state, a subjective feeling of tiredness or exhaustion that reduces our desire to continue working on a task (Bess et al., 2020; Hockey, 2013). Fatigue is ubiquitous, something most adults and children experience when struggling to complete a long or challenging task. Most of the time, all that is needed to recover from the fatigue is a quick break or cessation of the fatiguing task. In these cases, the negative effects of fatigue are minimal. For some individuals, however, their fatigue experiences may be more severe and sustained. When recurrent, this kind of severe fatigue can have significant, negative consequences, especially for children. Severe fatigue is more common in children suffering from chronic health issues, such as cancer, diabetes, and obesity (Hornsby et al., 2017; Hockenberry-Eaton et al., 1999). Children with such health conditions who also suffer from significant fatigue tend to face additional academic and social struggles compared to their non-fatigued peers (Stoff et al., 1989; Berrin, et al., 2007; Ravid et al., 2009). But what does this have to do with children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH)? Evidence continues to mount suggesting that children who are DHH are also more likely to experience severe fatigue as a result of their listening and understanding challenges--a term coined listening-related fatigue.

48. Listening-Related Fatigue in Children with Unilateral Hearing Loss

- Abstract
Purpose: Listening-related fatigue is an understudied construct that may contribute to the auditory, educational, and psychosocial problems experienced by children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL). Herein, we present an overview of listening-related fatigue in school-age children with hearing loss (CHL), with a focus on children with UHL. Method: Following a review of research examining listenin-grelated fatigue in adults and CHL, we present preliminary findings exploring the effects of unilateral and bilateral hearing loss on listening-related fatigue in children. For these exploratory analyses, we used data collected from our ongoing work developing and validating a tool, the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale, for measuring listening-related fatigue in children. Presently, we are assessing 3 versions of the fatigue scale--child self-report, parent proxy, and teacher proxy. Using these scales, data have been collected from more than 900 participants. Data from children with unilateral and bilateral hearing loss and for children with no hearing loss are compared with adult Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale data. Results: Results of our literature review and exploratory analyses suggest that adults and CHL are at increased risk for listening-related fatigue. Importantly, this increased risk was similar in magnitude regardless of whether the loss was unilateral or bilateral. Subjective ratings, based on child self-report and parent proxy report, were consistent, suggesting that children with unilateral and bilateral hearing loss experienced greater listening-related fatigue than children with no hearing loss. In contrast, results based on teacher proxy report were not sensitive to the effects of hearing loss. Conclusions: Children with UHL are at increased risk for listening-related fatigue, and the magnitude of fatigue is similar to that experienced by children with bilateral hearing loss. Problems of listening-related fatigue in school-age CHL may be better identified by CHL themselves and their parents than by teachers and specialists working with the children. 49. Effects of Critical Distance and Reverberation on Listening Effort in Adults

- Abstract
Purpose: Mixed historical data on how listening effort is affected by reverberation and listener-to-speaker distance challenge existing models of listening effort. This study investigated the effects of reverberation and listener-to-speaker distance on behavioral and subjective measures of listening effort: (a) when listening at a fixed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and (b) at SNRs that were manipulated so that word recognition would be comparable across different reverberation times and listening distances. It was expected that increased reverberation would increase listening effort but only when listening outside critical distance. Method: Nineteen adults (21-40 years) with no hearing loss completed a dual-task paradigm. The primary task was word recognition and the secondary task was timed word categorization; response times indexed behavioral listening effort. Additionally, participants provided subjective ratings in each condition. Testing was completed at two reverberation levels (moderate and high, RT[subscript 30] = 469 and 1,223 ms, respectively) and at two listener-to-speaker distances (inside and outside critical distance for the test room, 1.25 and 4 m, respectively). Results: Increased reverberation and listening distances worsened word recognition performance and both behavioral and subjective listening effort. The effect of reverberation was exacerbated when listeners were outside critical distance. Subjective experience of listening effort persisted even when word recognition was comparable across conditions. Conclusions: Longer reverberation times or listening outside the room's critical distance negatively affected behavioral and subjective listening effort. This study extends understanding of listening effort in reverberant rooms by highlighting the effect of listener's position relative to the room's critical distance.
